Abstract

Background Little is known about the bleeding risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) treated with anticoagulation. Our aim was to elucidate the rate of major bleeding (MB) events in a well-defined cohort of patients with IBD during anticoagulation after VTE. Methods This study is a retrospective follow-up analysis of a multicenter cohort study investigating the incidence and recurrence rate of VTE in IBD. Data on MB and IBD- and VTE-related parameters were collected via telephone interview and chart review. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of anticoagulation for VTE on the risk of MB by comparing time periods with anticoagulation vs those without anticoagulation. A random-effects Poisson regression model was used. Results We included 107 patients (52 women, 40 with ulcerative colitis, 64 with Crohn disease, and 3 with unclassified IBD) in the study. The overall observation time was 388 patient-years with and 1445 patient-years without anticoagulation. In total, 23 MB events were registered in 21 patients, among whom 13 MB events occurred without anticoagulation and 10 occurred with anticoagulation. No fatal bleeding during anticoagulation was registered. The incidence rate for MB events was 2.6/100 patient-years during periods exposed to anticoagulation and 0.9/100 patient-years during the unexposed time. Exposure to anticoagulation (adjusted incidence rate ratio, 3.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.5-9.0; P = 0.003) and ulcerative colitis (adjusted incidence rate ratio, 3.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.5-8.1; P = 0.003) were independent risk factors for MB events. Conclusion The risk of major but not fatal bleeding is increased in patients with IBD during anticoagulation. Our findings indicate that this risk may be outweighed by the high VTE recurrence rate in patients with IBD.

Abstract

Objective Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) seems to be frequently used among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to determine the prevalence and indicators of CAM use in Austrian IBD patients. Methods In a multicentre cross-sectional study, adult patients with IBD attending 18 Austrian outpatient clinics completed a multi-item questionnaire that recorded use of CAM as well as medical and socioeconomic characteristics. Patients were recruited between June 2014 and June 2015. The study outcome was the prevalence of CAM use and its socioeconomic and disease-related associations. Results A total of 1286 patients (Crohn's disease 830, ulcerative colitis 435, IBD unclassified 21; females 651) with a median age of 40 years (interquartile range 31-52 years) and a median disease duration of 10 years (4-18 years) were analysed. The prevalence of previous and/or current CAM use was 50.7%, with similar results for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In the multivariable analysis, female gender and a university education were independent socioeconomic indicators of CAM use. IBD-related indicators were longer duration of the disease and previous and/or current treatment with steroids and TNF-α inhibitors. Conclusion CAM use for IBD is frequent in Austrian IBD patients and associated with female gender, higher educational level of university degree, longer duration of the disease, and treatment with steroids and TNF-α inhibitors.

Abstract

Introduction Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suffer from various symptoms, impairing their quality of life and often affecting psychosocial issues. This may lead to the need for additional psychological care. This study investigated patients' subjective need for integrated psychosomatic support and psychotherapy and indicators for it. Materials and methods This is a cross‐sectional multicentre study in Austrian IBD patients who were in routine care at 18 IBD outpatient clinics. Patients filled in an anonymous, validated questionnaire (Assessment of the Demand for Additional Psychological Treatment Questionnaire [ADAPT]) assessing the need for psychological care. The ADAPT gives two separate scores: the need for integrated psychosomatic support and for psychotherapy. In addition, health‐related quality of life and the use of complementary and alternative medicine as well as clinical and socio‐demographic variables were queried. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to estimate the effect of the previously mentioned variables on the need for additional psychological care. Results Of 1286 patients, 29.7% expressed a need for additional psychological care, 19.6% expressed a need for integrated psychosomatic support and 20.2% expressed a need for psychotherapy. In the multivariable analysis, the two strongest indicators for the need for both types of psychological care were the use of complementary and alternative medicine (for integrated psychosomatic support: odds ratio = 1.64, 95% confidence interval 1.13–2.39, p = 0.010; for psychotherapy: odds ratio = 1.74, 95% confidence interval 1.20–2.53, p = 0.004), and a low health‐related quality of life score (for integrated psychosomatic support: odds ratio = 0.95, 95% confidence interval 0.94–0.96, p, Key summary What is already known? ZusammenfasungAnti-TNF-α-Antikörper haben die Therapie chronisch-entzündlicher Darmerkrankungen und anderer immunmediierter inflammatorischer Erkrankungen revolutioniert. Der zunehmende Einsatz dieser Substanzen war Anlass, den Konsensusbericht zur sicheren Anwendung von Infliximab der Arbeitsgruppe für Chronisch Entzündliche Darmerkrankungen der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Gastroenterologie und Hepatologie aus dem Jahr 2010 zu aktualisieren und auf alle anti-TNF-α-Antikörper zu erweitern. Der vorliegende Konsensusbericht fasst die aktuelle Datenlage zur sicheren Anwendung von anti-TNF-α-Antikörpern zusammen und berücksichtigt folgende Themen: allgemeines Infektionsrisiko, bakterielle Infekte (inkl. Clostridium difficile, Tuberkulose, Nahrungsmittelhygiene), Pneumozystis jiroveci, virale Infektionen (inkl. Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, CMV, VZV), Impfungen und Impfempfehlungen, gastrointestinale Aspekte (perianale Fistel, abdominale Fistel, Stenose), dermatologische Aspekte (Haut-Malignome, Ekzem-ähnliche anti-TNF-α-assoziierte Hautläsionen), Infusionsreaktionen und Immunogenität, demyelinisierende Erkrankungen, Hepatotoxizität, Hämatotoxizität, Herzinsuffizienz, Malignomrisiko und Einsatz nach Malignomen, sowie Schwangerschaft und Stillen. Da der Konsensusbericht als praktischer Leitfaden für die sichere Anwendung dieser Substanzen dienen soll, wurden die relevanten Aspekte in einer Checkliste zusammengefasst, die sich in zwei Teile „vor Therapie“ und „während Therapie“ gliedert.

Abstract

Background inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are lifelong conditions challenging the patient not only with respect to somatic complaints but also affecting psychosocial issues. This may lead to the need for additional psychological care. The present study investigated the patients’ subjective need for additional psychological care and indicators for such a need. Methods We performed a cross-sectional multicentre study on Austrian IBD patients who were in routine care at one of the 18 participating IBD centres. The patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire booklet including the ADAPT, a validated questionnaire on the need for psychological care which gives two separate scores (‘ADAPT-IPC’ -need for integrated psychosomatic care, ‘ADAPT-PT’- need for psychotherapy), a validated questionnaire on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), the SIBDQ, and questions on clinical and sociodemographic data. The primary endpoint was the need for integrated psychosomatic care, psychotherapy or both. Results 1286 patients returned the questionnaire. In total, 29.7% of all patients expressed a need for additional psychological care, 18.6% expressed a need for ADAPT-IPC and 20.2% expressed a need for ADAPT-PT. The multivariable regression analysis revealed the two dominating factors associated with the need for both types of psychological care were the use of CAM and a low SIBDQ-score ≤ 50 (see Table for details). Conclusion About 30% of the Austrian IBD patients expressed a need for integrated psychosomatic therapy a/o psychotherapy. This need was especially associated with reduced quality of life and the use of CAM which may indicate the desire for emphathetic and dedicated care. Further studies will be necessary to clarify if these results can be reproduced in other countries.

Abstract

Dies ist ein Konsens der Arbeitsgruppe CED (chronisch entzundliche Darmerkrankungen) der OGGH zur Ernahrung bei CED. Bei CED und Gewichtsverlust (> 5 % in 3 Monaten), Mangelerscheinungen, nach langstreckigen Darmresektionen sollte eine Mangelernahrung (bei Morbus Crohn in 20 – 70 %) gepruft und dann auch behandelt werden. Insbesondere sollte wegen Auftretens von eingeschrankter Lebensqualitat, opportunistischen Infekten, Osteopenie/Osteoporose, langerer Hospitalisierung und Mortalitat der Mangelernahrung sowohl durch Therapie der Grunderkrankung als auch spezielle, soweit moglich orale Ernahrungstherapie begegnet werden. Bei Mangelernahrung sollten Eisenstatus, Vitamin B12- und Folsaurespiegel, Vitamin D- und Zinkwerte im Blut untersucht werden. Die primare Ernahrungstherapie mit enteraler Fussigdiaten ist nur bei Kindern Therapie erster Wahl, bei Erwachsenen nur in speziellen Situationen. Es gibt dzt. keine allgemein wirksame orale Diat zur Remissionserhaltung bei CED. Probiotika mit E. coli Nissle konnen alternativ zu Mesalazin zur Remissionserhaltung bei Colitis ulcerosa eingesetzt werden. Patienten mit Ileostoma bzw. Kurzdarmsyndrom sollten speziell dietatisch beraten werden. Bei Patienten mit Kurzdarmsyndrom ist die Ernahrungssituation von der Funktion und Lange des Restdarms abhangig, sodass hier die bestmogliche antientzundliche Therapie betrieben werden sollte.

Abstract

Background and aims Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but data on frequency, site of thrombosis and risk factors are limited. We sought to determine prevalence, incidence as well as location and clinical features of first VTE among IBD patients. Methods We evaluated a cohort of 2811 IBD patients for a history of symptomatic, objectively confirmed first VTE, recruited from 14 referral centers. Patients with VTE before IBD diagnosis or cancer were excluded. Incidence rates were calculated based on person-years from IBD diagnosis to first VTE or end of follow-up, respectively. Results 2784 patients (total observation time 24,778 person-years) were analyzed. Overall, of 157 IBD patients with a history of VTE, 142 (90.4%) had deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE), whereas 15 (9.6%) had cerebral, portal, mesenteric, splenic or internal jugular vein thrombosis. The prevalence and incidence rate of all VTE was 5.6% and 6.3 per 1000 person years, respectively. Patients with VTE were older at IBD diagnosis than those without VTE (34.4 ± 14.8 years vs 32.1 ± 14.4 years, p = 0.045), but did not differ regarding sex, underlying IBD and disease duration. 121 (77.1%) VTE were unprovoked, 122 (77.7%) occurred in outpatients and 78 (60.9%) in patients with active disease. Medication at first VTE included corticosteroids (42.3%), thiopurines (21.2%), and infliximab (0.7%). Conclusion VTE is frequent in IBD patients. Most of them are unprovoked and occur in outpatients. DVT and PE are most common and unusual sites of thrombosis are rare.

Abstract

Patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's colitis are at increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). This risk is dependent on the duration and extent of disease, inflammatory activity and possible additional risk factors. Thus, the aim is to reduce this risk and to detect dysplastic and malignant lesions at an early stage. The working group for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (OGGH) has developed consensus statements on the following topics: risk of colorectal cancer, screening and surveillance, procedure of surveillance colonoscopy, dysplasia and its management, and chemoprevention. This consensus is intended to increase awareness of the increased risk of CRC in IBD and to support a standardised approach in cancer prevention.

Abstract

Infliximab is a monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), which is approved for the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn's disease (CD), fistulating Crohn's disease (FCD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and paediatric ulcerative colitis (PUC) from 6 years onwards. Besides its therapeutic efficacy, this antibody therapy is characterised by its side effects profile, which has been addressed in a seperate consensus statement by the Working Group for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases within the Austrian Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Infliximab is an effective treatment option for the above-mentioned indications; however, use of this agent requires special knowledge to assess the benefit-risk profile for each patient individually.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract

This is a consensus of the Austrian working group of IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases) of the ÖGGH on nutrition in IBD. Malnutrition should be assessed in case of IBD (in 20 - 70 % of Crohn's patients) and weight loss( 5 % within 3 months) or nutritional deficiencies or after extensive bowel resection and afterwards also treated. Malnutrition should be treated with medical therapy of IBD and also adequate - as far as possible - with oral nutritional therapy particularly because of reduced life quality, risk of opportunistic infections, osteopenia/osteoporosis, longer hospitalisations and higher mortality. Iron homeostasis, serum levels of Vitamin B12- and folic acid, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and zinc should be checked. Therapy with enteral liquid diets is only indicated as therapy of first choice in children and adolescents, but only in rare situations in adults with IBD. There is - up to now - no proven oral diet for maintenance of remission in IBD. Probiotics as E. coli Nissle could be used as alternative to mesalazine for maintenance of remission in patients with ulcerative colitis. A specific dietary counselling is mandatory in patients with ileostoma or short bowel syndrome. Malnutrition of short bowel patients is particularly dependent on the function and length of the remaining bowel, therefore the most effective medical therapy should be administered.

Abstract

Employing β-NMR on 8 Li adsorbed on Ru(0 0 1) the local (at the Li nucleus) density of states at the Fermi energy has been determined as function of Li coverage. It is independent of coverage below 0.2 monolayer (ML) and saturates at a twice as large plateau value beyond 1 ML. Calculations employing all electron density functional theory reproduce qualitatively the trend of the data. At low and high coverages, agreement between theory and experiment is almost quantitative. In addition, new terrace diffusion parameters for Li on Ru(0 0 1) have been obtained.

We have used several experimental methods to study how a large extrinsic oxygen vacancy density in pure tetragonal ZrO2 powders depends on details of how those powders are made. Samples were made from oxychloride and nitrate precursor solutions. We used perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy to determine in situ phase structure and the density of oxygen vacancies at 1200°C, XRD and SEM to determine the grain size and morphology of samples annealed at temperatures ranging from 200°–1200°C, and neutron activation analysis (NAA) to investigate purity of samples. Abstract

A beam of the radioactive isotope 8 Li is prepared at thermal velocities. The nuclei are highly spin polarized by transverse optical pumping of the thermal beam. The installation is ultra-high vacuum (UHV) compatible in a non-UHV accelerator environment. Since the atomic beam is used in a surface science experiment, where contamination must be avoided, special emphasis is given to the vacuum coupling of the accelerator/ 8 Li production/surface experimental areas. The atomic beam is produced by stopping the nuclear reaction products and evaporating them again from high-temperature graphite. To enhance the atomic beam, a novel tubular thermalizer is applied. The thermal polarized atomic beam intensity is approximately 5×10 8 atoms/s sr.

Abstract

For several years this research group has been using 111In/Cd TDPAC to study oxygen vacancies in pure and lightly doped zirconia powders at temperatures up to 1400°C. This paper includes a brief survey of important results from those studies and some recent results. In particular, our new measurement showing negligible relaxation due to vacancy hopping above 600°C provides a major breakthrough in our ability to analyze PAC data and to determine accurately hopping and trapping rates and enthalpies for vacancies in tetragonal zirconia.

We have investigated epitaxial YBCO films by Perturbed γγ-Angular Correlation Spectroscopy (PAC) using 111In probe atoms. The probes substitute on the yttrium lattice site and hyperfine parameters have been determined unambiguously. Excellent agreement is achieved with full potential electric field gradient (efg) calculations. Good reproducibility has been achieved by our preparation method allowing us to study the influence of oxygen motion on the structural orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition.

Abstract

Oxygen-deficient, tetragonal thin films of YBa2Cu3O6+x with x ≈ 0.25, quenched from the deposition temperature, change to the oxygenated, orthorhombic phase with x ≈ 1, between 200 °C and 400 °C in flowing oxygen. The transition is not reversible in flowing oxygen, and cannot be completely reversed by cooling in flowing argon. We do not observe a transition of the orthorhombic films to the tetragonal phase up to 800 °C in flowing oxygen. We observe that the major impurity phases to appear under nonoptimal annealing conditions are oriented phases of YcuO2 and BaCu2O2, with Y2BaCu2O5 and Y2Cu2O5 conspicuously absent. These conclusions have been drawn from a study that uses perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy to probe the local microstructure of the films.

Abstract

The local atomic order around very dilute indium impurities in c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7 and YBa2Cu3O6.25 films at room temperature and in YBa2Cu3Ox bulk powders held in air or oxygen over a wide temperature range were investigated using 111In/Cd \gamma--\gamma perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy. The probe atoms occupy a single substitutional lattice position in YBa2Cu3Ox, and evidence reported here strongly supports previous claims that this is the yttrium position. In YBa2Cu3Ox powders, the local atomic order changes continuously with temperature. At room temperature the electric field gradient measured by PAC in bulk YBa2Cu3Ox powder is indistinguishable from that in the fully oxygenated YBa2Cu3O7 film. Near the decomposition temperature, the bulk YBa2Cu3Ox powder data are semiquantitatively similar to data in the room temperature YBa2Cu3O6.25 film, with quantitative differences that we attribute to temperature averaging in the former. Other sites usually found in PAC spectra of YBa2Cu3Ox bulk samples arise from 111In dissolved in Y2BaCuO5 and Y2Cu2O5 impurity phases. The latter phase apparently arises because of significant barium loss during processing; the barium deficiency is clearly demonstrated by comparison of PAC data with the alloy phase diagram above the decomposition temperature. PAC data on pure Y2Cu2O5 are reported here also.

Patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's colitis are at increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). This risk is dependent on the duration and extent of disease, inflammatory activity and possible additional risk factors. Thus, the aim is to reduce this risk and to detect dysplastic and malignant lesions at an early stage. The working group for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ÖGGH) has developed consensus statements on the following topics: risk of colorectal cancer, screening and surveillance, procedure of surveillance colonoscopy, dysplasia and its management, and chemoprevention. This consensus is intended to increase awareness of the increased risk of CRC in IBD and to support a standardised approach in cancer prevention.

Abstract

Indium-doped zinc oxide powders have been prepared which show room-temperature electrical conductivities as high as 30 Ω−1cm−1. The indium doping apparently occurs as Zn1−xInxO, Zn1−yInyO1+y/2, or a combination of these. Optimum conductivity occurs for Zn1−xInxO where the maximum value ofxobtained was about 0.5 at%. This substitution results in a lattice volume expansion of 0.4%. The degrees of sample reduction were determined by iodimetric titration. Time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy on indium doped zinc oxide is consistent with indium substituting at normal zinc sites in the ZnO lattice. TDPAC studies on zinc oxide annealed under zinc vapors show a second environment for the111In probe. In this case, there is an unusually high temperature dependence of the electric field gradient which may be caused by a nearby zinc interstitial. An important conclusion of this work is that zinc interstitials are not ionized and do not therefore contribute significantly to the increased conductivity of reduced zinc oxide.

Infliximab is a monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), which is approved for the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn's disease (CD), fistulating Crohn's disease (FCD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and paediatric ulcerative colitis (PUC) from 6 years onwards. Besides its therapeutic efficacy, this antibody therapy is characterised by its side effects profile, which has been addressed in a seperate consensus statement by the Working Group for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases within the Austrian Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Infliximab is an effective treatment option for the above-mentioned indications; however, use of this agent requires special knowledge to assess the benefit-risk profile for each patient individually.

Abstract

Very dilute (10{sub 12} cm{sup {minus}3}) indium donors in CdTe and ZnSe powders and in CdTe single crystals were investigated using {sup 111}In Perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. Most indium atoms are in uncomplexed sites but can form weakly-bound complexes with native defects in very defective material. The only complex observed in CdTe is an indium-Cd vacancy pair. The CdTe in which these pairs occur is apparently n-type, most Cd vacancies are free and doubly-charged, and the binding energy with indium is 0.15 eV. In ZnSe, indium can pair with a Zn vacancy or with some other presently unidentified defect. These complexes form in ZnSe containing large concentrations of both free Zn vacancies and complexes of Zn vacancies with other defects. In CdTe, the pair formation equilibration time constant is two days at 15C,an implication that Cd vacancies are mobile at room temperature. Lattice relaxation around a Cd vacancy in CdTe was probed by single crystal PAC experiments.

PAC spectroscopy has been used to study the compound formation at the Pd(100)/In interface. Indium films of various thicknesses have been deposited onto Pd(100) single crystals. The111In PAC probes are either deposited on the Pd(100) surface before covering it with In or introduced into the In metal before producing the interface. Pd/In compounds with polycrystalline structure of various stoichiometry are identified from the detection of significant electric field gradient tensors after isochronal as well as isothemal annealing. In particular we find an ordered structure at the interface directly after In deposition.

PAC spectroscopy has been used to study diffusion and desorption of isolated 111 In atoms adsorbed on a Si(111)7×7 surface. Two different adsorption sites are found and their hyperfine parameters are determined as a function of temperature and compared to first-principles calculations. The activation energy for the migration to regular adsorption sites is determined to be 0.72(5) eV. The relative population of the two adsorption sites changes at about 500 K corresponding to an activation energy of 1.61(15) eV for this process

Abstract

Growth and melting behaviour of thin indium films on Ge(100) have been investigated by Auger-electron spectroscopy (AES), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and perturbed γγ angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy, respectively. At room temperature inidium is found to grow in three-dimensional islands even at submonolayer coverages. A very rough film surface is observed for thicknesses up to 230 ML. The melting behaviour of such films has been studied by PAC. A reduction of the melting temperature T m as well as a strong supercooling of the films is observed. The electric field gradient for 111In(111Cd) in the indium islands is determined as a function of temperature and is used to monitor the local crystalline order of the films up to temperatures just below the melting point.

The magnetic behavior of the bordering Ni and Cu monolayers at the interfaceof ultrathin Cu films on Ni(111) has been investigated. 111 In probes have been used, utilizing perturbed γγ angular correlations, to study strength, orientation, and temperature dependence of the magnetic hyperfine field at the probe nuclear site. This magnetic hyperfine field is strongly reduced to about 50% in the first Ni layer covered by Cu; it vanishes in the adjacent Cu layer. Magnetic and electric hyperfine fields were measured at 111 In( 111 Cd) probe atoms in the topmost atomic layer of Ni(111) and Ni(100) single-crystal surfaces as well as in ultrathin Ni films epitaxially grown on Cu(100), utilizing the perturbed γγ-angular correlation (PAC) method. The behaviour of the magnetic hyperfine fields as a function of temperature were studied for both Ni surfaces as well as for different Ni(100) films with thicknesses ranging from 2 up to 10 monolayers. It was found that strength and orientation of the magnetic hyperfine fields are quite different for these systems. The critical temperatures are strongly reduced for thin nickel films and approach the bulk value with increasing film thickness, whereas at the surfaces no change in the Curie temperatures was detected.

Interface compound formation in Ni/In film couples has been studied by means of the PAC method using radioactive111In probe atoms. Subsequent occurrence of the compounds Ni10In27, Ni2In3, NiIn and Ni3In has been observed after isochronal annealing. Interdiffusion was found to start at temperatures about 250K whereby Ni propagates into the In film.

Abstract

Applications of hyperfine-interaction techniques, like NMR, PAC and Mosbauer spectroscopy, to well-characterized surfaces are discussed and the present knowledge of surface hyperfine fields is reviewed. Measurements of nuclear spin relaxation permit to extract the local density of electron states at the Fermi level of adsorbed alkali atoms. From the observed electric-field-gradient properties surface probe sites and diffusion processes can be inferred; the experimentally determined magnetic hyperfine fields give access to the electron-spin behaviour at magnetic surfaces.

Abstract

Diffusion processes on vicinally cut Ag(100) and Ag(111) surfaces have been studied utilizing the perturbed-angular-correlation (PAC) spectroscopy with 111 In probes at very low concentration (10 −4 ML). The occupation of step and terrace sites by PAC probes at the Ag surfaces is detected via the electric-field-gradient tensor and is observed as a function of annealing temperature. From the thermal conversion between the different 111 In surface sites activation energies for microscopic diffusion steps have been estimated.

Abstract

The observation of ''Korringa-like" nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation of 8 Li probe atoms, adsorbed at extremely low coverages on the Si(111)-(7×7) surface (10 - 4 ML and below) points to the existence of a correlated two-dimensional electron gas. The observed high relaxation rates as compared to adsorption of 8 Li on metals are in accordance with an enhanced electron localization in the adatom dangling bonds. For 8 Li adsorbed on semiconducting hydrogen covered Si(111) surfaces (now at coverages around 10 - 3 ML) ''Korringa-like" spin-lattice relaxation is also observed, quite surprisingly. Independent of the preparation of the hydrogen coverage, i.e., in vacuum or wet chemically terminated, the relaxation rates are moreover all of the same size. This points to a narrow hand at the Fermi energy generated by the adsorbed Li itself. Quantitative ab initio all-electron density-functional calculations for Li coverage as low as 0.04 on the perfectly hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surface together with a qualitative reasoning following Mott's arguments on semiconductor-metal transitions support this view.

Abstract

Radioactive 111In has been incorporated into oriented thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ during a thermal coevaporation process. The hyperfine technique of perturbed γγ‐angular correlation spectroscopy shows that 60% of the indium substitutes at a single site in the superconductor. We obtain spectra with reasonable statistics from 2 mCi of starting material, about 1% of which is incorporated into the film. Other methods of incorporating indium into films and bulk YBa2Cu3O7−δ have often resulted in a significant amount of indium being incorporated into impurity phases.

Interdiffusion and interface compound formation has been observed at the system Ni/In by using thin‐film couples as well as thin In films on low index Ni single‐crystal substrates. The method applied was the perturbed γγ‐angular correlation technique, which is very sensitive to local structures and their changes around probe atoms. The successive occurrence of different Ni/In compounds could be observed on isochronal annealing above 230 K. A correlation between the appearance of compounds and In film thickness has been found.

The diffusion behaviour of indium atoms on various vicinal silver and copper surfaces has been investigated by the perturbed γγ-angular correlation (PAC) technique. The electric-field-gradient tensor, acting as a ‘fingerprint’ for 111In probe sites on the surface, was used to study diffusion on an atomic scale. The results can be interpreted within a microscopic diffusion model. From the conversion temperatures, activation energies for the different diffusion steps are estimated.

The appearance of a reversible order-disorder transition at Cu(115) and Cu(117) surfaces has been investigated using perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. The local atomic arrangement at 111 In probes is detected via nuclear quadrupole hyperfine interaction. A broadening of the electric field gradient distribution is measured for elevated temperatures due to structural changes around the probes. The onset of disorder on the atomic scale is found to be well above the roughening transition temperatures measured by various scattering techniques

Abstract

Background & Aims Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of a first venous thromboembolism (VTE), yet their risk of recurrent VTE is unknown. We performed a cohort study to determine the risk for recurrent VTE among patients with IBD compared with subjects without IBD. Methods We assessed 2811 patients with IBD for a history of VTE, recruited from outpatient clinics at 14 referral centers (June 2006–December 2008). Patients with VTE before a diagnosis of IBD or those not confirmed to have VTE, cancer, or a VTE other than deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, were excluded. Recurrence rates were compared with 1255 prospectively followed patients without IBD that had a first unprovoked VTE (not triggered by trauma, surgery, or pregnancy). The primary end point was symptomatic, objectively confirmed, recurrent VTE after discontinuation of anticoagulation therapy after a first VTE. Results Overall, of 116 IBD patients who had a history of first VTE, 86 were unprovoked. The probability of recurrence 5 years after discontinuation of anticoagulation therapy was higher among patients with IBD than patients without IBD (33.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 21.8–45.0 vs 21.7%; 95% CI: 18.8–24.6; P = .01). After adjustment for potential confounders, IBD was an independent risk factor of recurrence (hazard ratio=2.5; 95% CI: 1.4–4.2; P = .001). Conclusions Patients with IBD are at an increased risk of recurrent VTE compared to patients without IBD.

The perturbed γγ angular correlation method has been applied to study compound formation in Ni/In thin film couples. During an isochronal anneal cycle a variety of electric field gradient situations has been observed at 111In/111Cd probe nuclei, corresponding to the formation of different Ni/In compounds. Structure and stoichiometry of the compounds has been determined by comparison with bulk samples of the stable Ni/In alloys.
