- Abstract
Limited research is available on transfer students who are athletes and on student-athletes from non-NCAA institutions. This study sought to determine if Tinto's theory of student departure can be applied to transfer student-athletes at smaller institutions. A mixed-methods approach was chosen to gain a more in-depth understanding of the population of transfer-student athletes at one smaller faith-based institution in the Midwest. An embedded mixed methods design was used to uncover the ways in which transfer student-athletes define academic and social engagement. The Academic and Athletic Identity Scale measured correlations between academic identity and academic success as measured by GPA and between athletic identity and years playing sports. Previous researchers had found that transfer students had difficulties engaging socially while student-athletes were less likely to engage academically if they had higher athletic identities. Transfer student-athletes were found to mirror the students in Tinto's research in how they engaged both socially and academically with the institution, in contrast to previous research findings on transfer students and student-athletes, respectively.
