The process of local corrosion of the aluminum surface in solutions of 0.1 M NaCl (pH 10–11.4) was studied. Data on the rates of local partial processes were obtained based on processing a series of images using computer vision methods. It is shown that the places of localization of defects are determined at the very beginning of the process and their location can be estimated in the first 10 min of the experiment. Based on changes in the diameter of hydrogen bubbles during the cathode process, the mass of aluminum dissolved during the anode process is calculated. The mass–time dependence is linear in semi-logarithmic coordinates and has the form m ~ tα. It is established that α changes during the process: for small times, α > 1; for large times, α < 1.

The work is devoted to the development of an integrated approach to the assessment and prediction of corrosion processes. Application of the approach is considered within the problem of data processing of the dissolution of iron in the sulfate-citrate buffer process. The main stages of this work are the analysis of existing methods of studying the dissolution of the iron electrode, choosing the model for description of the reaction kinetics and the development of a module for solving the problem of finding the rate constants and Tafel coefficients based on a genetic algorithm for studying the process kinetics. The results of the work can be used to analyze the process kinetics of dissolution of iron in different acidic medias.

In ITER, before each plasma pulse the poloidal magnet system will be pre-charged with maximum energy up to 8GJ. Part of this energy will be used for the gas mixture breakdown and early plasma current ramp up. This will be provided with help of the switching network units (SNU) comprising of special hybrid (mechanical and semiconductor) DC circuit breakers and resistors, which, after being inserted into the coil circuits by opening of the circuit breakers, dissipate the energy extracted from the coils. The paper describes the design of the SNU resistor and reports on the results of the tests carried out with the aim to optimize the design, demonstrate its suitability and to confirm its compliance with ITER requirements.

Currently there are very few oil and gas fields left with "simple" geological settings, producing high hydrocarbon rates from vertical or deviated wells. The need for modern effective methods of recovery improvement has become obvious and undisputed. Horizontal drilling is one of well-known and widely accepted methods for obtaining maximum hydrocarbons flow. One of the types of horizontal wells is the fishbone well, which is a multilateral well with the main wellbore and a few sidetracks (ribs). Depending on geological objectives, the sidetracks may be drilled within the same geological object as the main borehole, or a different geological object may be targeted. While drilling horizontal wells, apart from drilling related challenges, the challenges, connected to geological aspects of the reservoir may be encountered. This article is devoted to the analysis of drilling a fishbone well with well placement utilization in Russkoe field.

This article studies the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and nitric oxide (NO) on Triticum aestivum L. wheat plants exposed to the influence of high concentrations of copper and zinc compounds. It is shown that heavy metals (HMs) caused a decrease in the growth parameters in the overground and underground plant parts and contributed to a sharp deterioration in the energy balance and the situation regarding oxidative stress. SA and NO exerted a protective effect, which was expressed in the increased ability to accumulate shoot and root mass, stabilize the energy balance, and reduced lipid peroxidation.

In ITER, water-cooled aluminum DC busbars will be used to connect the power supplies (AC/DC thyristor converters) to switching networks (used at every pulse for plasma initiation), fast discharge units (which protect the superconducting coils in case of quench) and finally to the magnets. The combination of stringent requirements (both electrical and mechanical), size and weight, make the design, installation, integration and maintenance of such a busbar network a challenging task. These aspects will be presented and discussed in the paper. ITER is a Nuclear Facility (INB-174).

The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results., Submitted to the New Journal of Physics

The capacitor banks are intended for generation of the counter current pulse in vacuum circuit breakers of a two-step powerful contactor (switchgear). This switchgear is part of the power supply system of ITER superconductive coils and provides fast discharge of coil magnetic field energy by breaking the coil current supply loop and connecting in the loop the high energy resistors. The superconductive coils of the ITER facility store considerable energy (several gigajoules) and the counter pulse capacitor bank should generate the pulse current not less than 70 kA during about 600 μs at an initial voltage up to 10 kV. After generation of the current pulse the discharge switch of the capacitor bank is closed and a high voltage exceeding the initial one (10 kV) is applied to the discharge switch. The paper presents the features of the transients during the commutation cycle, design of the capacitor bank and its main components (semiconductor discharge switch, inductor, charger, etc.), as well as the results of the capacitor bank testing.

Operation of Counter-Pulse Capacitor Banks (CPCB) is characterized by a number of features, which complicate the safe operation of semiconductor switches. These features are as follows. The necessity to operate in the surge-current mode at high currents up to 100kA within about 1 ms results in overheating and possible thermal damage of the semiconductor structure. The discharge process ends with closing of the switches and emergence of reverse voltage, which can be higher than the initial voltage of the capacitors. One of the key elements of the discharge circuit is the inductor, which limits the discharge current. Reverse recovery process in the circuit with this inductor causes generation of high-voltage spikes, which might result in the damage of a semiconductor device overheated by surge-current by this moment. The paper studies the above-listed features and analyzes the safe operation of Pulsed Power Thyristors (PPT) and Light Triggered Thyristors (LTT) under these conditions. The method for tracking of thermal generation peaks on the thyristor voltage drop curve was used for evaluation of allowable currents. Suppression of switching overvoltages is commonly provided by snubber R-C circuits. To eliminate spikes a snubber R-C circuit should contain, as a rule, large capacitors and resistors with a low resistance. But, in this case the rate of anode current pulse rise is very high, which might cause the thyristor to fail during switch-on. This made it necessary to develop special snubber circuits, which are free from disadvantages of usual circuits. The paper presents the results of experimental research of the thyristor switch-on and switch-off in CPCB prototypes. The developed method (suppression of impulse switching overvoltages) is demonstrated. The possibility of safe operation of the semiconductor switches in CPCB has been verified.

Superconductive magnetic systems capable of storing energy up to tens of gigajoules are used in modern electrophysical facilities. Protection of such systems is provided by Fast Discharge Units (FDU). In case of failure, in particular quench in a superconducting coil, rather fast and safe energy discharge from the magnetic system is provided by FDU, which breaks the coil supply loop and provides energy dissipation in high energy resistors. The ITER FDU should interrupt currents up to 70 kA with a voltage up to 10 kV. The FDU includes a two-stage switch consisting of a ByPass Switch (BPS, contactor with a pneumatic drive) and a fast vacuum circuit breaker (VCB). The other important part of FDU is a capacitor bank for generating the counter current pulse. The closed BPS carries a steady-state current up to 70 kA. Once the BPS opens, current passes into closed contacts of VCB. Shortly after, the VCB opens and the capacitor bank generates a counter current pulse, which compensates the current in VCB. In such a way the arcless current commutation is provided in the FDU. This paper studies the transients during FDU electrical switch-off. Peculiarities of the capacitor bank operation are considered. Capacitive storage rated for 5 kV, 70 kA is described. The tests results of capacitor bank are presented.

The pulsed current source is intended for research of high-current electrical discharges in dense media in laboratory conditions. The facility includes two modules of capacitive energy storage, control panel unit and cable collector which connects facility with the load‥ Each module is a functionally completed remote-operated capacitive energy storage 0.5 MJ, 18 kV, built on eight capacitor cells with reverse-switching dynistor (RSD) switches. The module has volume 1.3 m3 and comprises a charger with a high-frequency inverter, a protection contactor with normally closed high-voltage contacts to neutralize the cell charge, control units for triggering of RSD switches, control and diagnostics apparatus with a programmable logic controller. The semiconductor switches in the capacitor cells are triggered by light pulses transmitted from a control panel unit via fiber-optical cables. Information exchange between the modules control and diagnostics system and the control panel unit is also realized through fiber-optical cables. The facility is designed for operation in the programmable discharge mode, when semiconductor switches in the capacitor cells are switched on in the specified time sequence according to the preset program. A maximal current pulse amplitude of 800 kA at the module output is attained during simultaneous discharge of all cells in the short-circuit mode. The wave-front of the current pulse is 150 µs.

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6:5 ± 7:4 (stat:) +8.34 -8.0(sys:)) ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v - c)=c = (2:7 ± 3:1 (stat:) +3.4 -3:3 (sys:)) × 10 -6. The above result, obtained by comparing the time distributions of neutrino interactions and of protons hitting the CNGS target in 10.5 μs long extractions, was confirmed by a test performed at the end of 2011 using a short bunch beam allowing to measure the neutrino time of ight at the single interaction level., 0, arXiv-1109.4897v4, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

A new method of momentum measurement of charged particles through multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the OPERA lead-emulsion target is presented. It is based on precise measurements of track angular deviations carried out thanks to the very high resolution of nuclear emulsions. The algorithm has been tested with Monte Carlo pions. The results are found to describe within the expected uncertainties the data obtained from test beams. We also present a comparison of muon momenta evaluated through MCS in the OPERA lead-emulsion target with those determined by the electronic detectors for neutrino-charged current interaction events. The two independent measurements agree within the experimental uncertainties, and the results validate the algorithm developed for the emulsion detector of OPERA. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft., 0, arXiv:1106.6211v1 [physics.ins-det], SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA experiment is based on a hybrid technology combining electronic detectors (EDs) and nuclear emulsions. OPERA collected muon-neutrino interactions during the 2008 and 2009 physics runs of the CNGS neutrino beam, produced at CERN with an energy range of about 5-35 GeV. A total of 5.3 × 1019 protons on target equivalent luminosity have been analysed with the OPERA EDs: scintillator strips target trackers and magnetic muon spectrometers equipped with resistive plate gas chambers and drift tubes, allowing a detailed reconstruction of muon-neutrino interactions. Charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions are identified, using the measurements in the EDs, and the NC/CC ratio is computed. The momentum distribution and the charge of the muon tracks produced in CC interactions are analysed. Calorimetric measurements of the visible energy are performed for both the CC and NC samples. For CC events, the Bjorken-y distribution and the hadronic shower profile are computed. The results are compared with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the response of EDs. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the Rμ dependence on the primary composition. The measured Rμ values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy" ℰμcos θ. A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2010., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode through the study of νμ→ ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2007 and 2008 with the detector fully operational with its related facilities for the emulsion handling and analysis. After a brief description of the beam and of the experimental setup we report on the collection, reconstruction and analysis procedures of first samples of neutrino interaction events. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA., 0, P06020, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment has been designed to prove the appearance of ντ in a nearly pure νμ beam (CNGS) produced at CERN and detected in the underground Hall C of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, 730 km away from the source. In OPERA, τ leptons resulting from the interaction of ντ are produced in target units called bricks made of nuclear emulsion films interleaved with lead plates. The OPERA target contains 150000 of such bricks, for a total mass of 1.25 kton, arranged into walls interleaved with plastic scintillator strips. The detector is split into two identical supermodules, each supermodule containing a target section followed by a magnetic spectrometer for momentum and charge measurement of penetrating particles. Real time information from the scintillators and the spectrometers provide the identification of the bricks where the neutrino interactions occurred. The candidate bricks are extracted from the walls and, after X-ray marking and an exposure to cosmic rays for alignment, their emulsion films are developed and sent to the emulsion scanning laboratories to perform the accurate scan of the event. In this paper, we review the design and construction of the detector and of its related infrastructures, and report on some technical performances of the various components. The construction of the detector started in 2003 and it was completed in Summer 2008. The experiment is presently in the data taking phase. The whole sequence of operations has proven to be successful, from triggering to brick selection, development, scanning and event analysis. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA., 0, P04018, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

New methods for efficient and unambiguous interconnection between electronic counters and target units based on nuclear photographic emulsion films have been developed. The application to the OPERA experiment, that aims at detecting oscillations between mu neutrino and tau neutrino in the CNGS neutrino beam, is reported in this paper. In order to reduce background due to latent tracks collected before installation in the detector, on-site large-scale treatments of the emulsions ("refreshing") have been applied. Changeable Sheet (CSd) packages, each made of a doublet of emulsion films, have been designed, assembled and coupled to the OPERA target units ("ECC bricks"). A device has been built to print X-ray spots for accurate interconnection both within the CSd and between the CSd and the related ECC brick. Sample emulsion films have been extensively scanned with state-of-the-art automated optical microscopes. Efficient track-matching and powerful background rejection have been achieved in tests with electronically tagged penetrating muons. Further improvement of in-doublet film alignment was obtained by matching the pattern of low-energy electron tracks. The commissioning of the overall OPERA alignment procedure is in progress., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures

- Abstract
Objectives: To objectively characterize phenome-wide associations observed in the entire Taiwanese population and represent them in a meaningful, interpretable way., Study Design: In this population-based observational study, we analyzed 782 million outpatient visits and 15 394 unique phenotypes that were observed in the entire Taiwanese population of over 22 million individuals. Our data was obtained from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Results We stratified the population into 20 gender-age groups and generated 28.8 million and 31.8 million pairwise odds ratios from male and female subpopulations, respectively. These associations can be accessed online at http://associations.phr.tmu.edu.tw. To demonstrate the database and validate the association estimates obtained, we used correlation analysis to analyze 100 phenotypes that were observed to have the strongest positive association estimates with respect to essential hypertension. The results indicated that association patterns tended to have a strong positive correlation between adjacent age groups, while correlation estimates tended to decline as groups became more distant in age, and they diverged when assessed across gender groups., Conclusions: The correlation analysis of pairwise disease association patterns across different age and gender groups led to outcomes that were broadly predicted before the analysis, thus confirming the validity of the information contained in the presented database. More diverse individual disease-specific analyses would lead to a better understanding of phenome-wide associations and empower physicians to provide personalized care in terms of predicting, preventing, or initiating an early management of concomitant diseases., (© The Author 2015. - Abstract
An easy-to-use method for quantitative analysis of bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS) was developed. The acid treatment was resultant in removing proteins and lactose and allowed to avoid long-term operation as dialysis. It was shown that, as opposed to anthron and phenol-sulphuric acid methods, reducing sugars method after EPS hydrolysis with glucose as standard provided reliable results, no matter to the EPS monosaccharide composition. EPS quantity in kefir of different brands was varied greatly, approximately at 50-200 mg/l, showing potential to enhance kefiran production by alteration of technological process. The temperature optimum for EPS production by kefir grains and kefir starter was about 30 °C, while the rise of temperature increased soluble EPS in culturing media by means of extraction from kefir grain body., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
