The global threat that the diamondback moth (DBM) (Plutella xylostella) poses to Brassica juncea creates an urgent need to develop effective mitigation strategies. With promising findings, this study explores the potential of plant-derived antioxidants, particularly Millettia pachyloba, in mitigating DBM-induced oxidative stress. Greenhouse experiments conducted using M. pachyloba leaf ethanol extract (MPEE) at concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 % (w/v) showed the inhibitory effect of MPEE on DBM damage in B. juncea. The comprehensive assessment included the effectiveness of MPEE in reducing oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide), augmenting metabolites (flavonoids, phenolics), enhancing anti-oxidant compounds (glutathione, ascorbic acid, total protein), and stimulating key enzymes (su-peroxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase). The results were compared to controls, in which the plants were treated with water or fipronil. Fipronil and MPEE significantly reduced leaf puncturing and damage, and the impact force increased with MPEE concentration. Both types of protection reduced the content of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in leaves, stems, and roots. However, a significant increase in the content of flavonoids, phenolic and antioxidant compounds (glutathione, ascorbic acid, and proteins) and enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase) was observed. The enhancement of metabolites, enzymes, and antioxidants was comparable in plants treated with fipronil and MPEE 10%. This study, with its potential to replace synthetic fipronil with M. pachyloba extracts to reduce oxidative stress induced by Plutella xylostella on mustard plants, offers a promising solution for protection against this insect.

Toxocariasis, a zoonotic infection transmitted by Toxocara canis (from dogs) and Toxocara cati (from cats) larvae, poses rare but severe risks to humans. We present a case of hepatic visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxocara canis in a 21-year-old male with a history of close contact with a pet dog. Initial symptoms and imaging findings mimicked a pyogenic liver abscess. The initial laboratory investigations revealed neutrophilia and elevated levels of IgE. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics, persistent fever prompted further investigation. Subsequent serological testing for Toxocara antibodies and histopathological analysis of liver tissue demonstrating eosinophil infiltrates and Charcot-Leyden crystals led to a confirmed diagnosis of a liver abscess caused by Toxocara canis. Serological testing for Toxocara antibodies and histopathological analysis of liver tissue confirmed a Toxocara canis-induced liver abscess. Albendazole treatment yielded significant clinical improvement. This case highlights the necessity of considering toxocariasis in liver abscess differentials, particularly in high-seroprevalence regions like Vietnam. Relying solely on serological tests may be insufficient, emphasizing the need for corroborative evidence, including invasive procedures like liver biopsy, for accurate hepatic toxocariasis diagnosis.

A mixed solution of chitosan (CTS) (1.6%) and glucosamine (GA) (0.4%) was irradiated by gamma rays from a Co-60 source to form Maillard reaction products (MRPs). Upon gamma-ray irradiation, the colour of the mixture solution became browner. The resultant MRP solution was characterised by spectrophotometric analyses at the wavelengths of 284 nm and 420 nm. The antibacterial activity of the CTS-GA MRP solution was evaluated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using the agar well diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value against these bacteria was also determined. The results showed that the CTS-GA MRP solution exhibited high antibacterial activity against both bacteria. Furthermore, pork tenderloin soaked in CTS-GA MRP solution for 10 min could extend the storage time by 8 days at 5°C, with higher protein content and lower total aerobic microorganism count than the control. Therefore, this CTS-GA MRP solution has the potential to be applied as a natural preservative agent for meat and meat products.

Several studies have explored the use of hologram technology in architecture and urban design, demonstrating its feasibility. Holograms can represent 3D spatial data and offer an immersive experience, potentially replacing traditional methods such as physical 3D and offering a promising alternative to mixed-reality display technologies. Holograms can visualize realistic scenes such as buildings, cityscapes, and landscapes using the novel view synthesis technique. This study examines the suitability of spatial data collected through the Gaussian splatting method for tabletop hologram visualization. Recent advancements in Gaussian splatting algorithms allow for real-time spatial data collection of a higher quality compared to photogrammetry and neural radiance fields. Both hologram visualization and Gaussian splatting share similarities in that they recreate 3D scenes without the need for mesh reconstruction. In this research, unmanned aerial vehicle-acquired primary image data were processed for 3D reconstruction using Gaussian splatting techniques and subsequently visualized through holographic displays. Two experimental environments were used, namely, a building and a university campus. As a result, 3D Gaussian data have proven to be an ideal spatial data source for hologram visualization, offering new possibilities for real-time motion holograms of real environments and digital twins.

Radopholus similis (Cobb 1893) (Rhabditida, Pratylenchidae) is a common and destructive pest that causes significant yield losses in Cavendish bananas. The repeated use of synthetic pesticides to control this nematode has raised concerns about toxicity to users and the environment. An alternative approach to managing this harmful species involves the use of nontoxic plant-derived extracts that enhance protection against various biological constraints. In this study, aqueous extract from the leaves and stems of Eupatorium odoratum Linn. (EAEO) was used to control R. similis in banana roots under in vitro and on-plant conditions. Through direct contact and penetration experiments on roots, as well as on-plant trials, concentrations of 12500, 6250, 3120, 1560, and 780 mg DW·L−1 EAEO were used to evaluate nematode mortality rates, infection levels in root segments (in vitro experiment), root infection, root necrosis index, shoot and root fresh weight, and growth parameters such as stem length, diameter, leaf number, and leaf surface area (on-plant experiment). The results showed that the nematode mortality rate due to EAEO ranged from 35.3% to 90.1%, which is statistically significant compared to the mortality rate in the control treatment (16%). Significant nematode inhibition was observed in banana roots infected with R. similis and exposed to EAEO for 48 h. There were no statistically significant differences in root infection, root necrosis, and plant fresh weight between plants treated with fenamiphos and EAEO. Maximum effectiveness was observed at the 12500 mg DW·L−1 EAEO concentration. These findings provide valuable insights into the nematicidal metabolites of EAEO against R. similis. Thus, the potential of EAEO as a biocontrol agent against R. similis has been demonstrated. For future research, investigations will be extended to elucidate the mechanisms of action of the essential compounds in EAEO against nematodes, determine the optimal EAEO dosage for nematode control without harm to banana plants and the environment, assess the long-term effects of EAEO on banana plants and the environment, explore the ecological impact of EAEO use in agricultural ecosystems, study the effectiveness of EAEO on various plant species, and consider the development of commercial products or formulations based on EAEO.

This research aims to determine the volatile compounds present in Grewia bulot leaf extracts and evaluate their cytotoxic and antioxidant activities. The volatile constituents of the n-hexane and dichloromethane extracts were identified by using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The main compounds identified in the former were neophytadiene (18.2%), methyl palmitate (14.4%), methyl linoleate (9.7%), β-sitosterol (4.5%), and methyl stearate (3.4%), while those in the latter were palmitic acid (9.8%), hexadecane (7.4%), octadecane (6.0%), neophytadiene (5.3%), and 2-tert-butoxyethanol (5.3%). The cytotoxicities of the extracts were examined against four human cancer cell lines (SK-LU-1, Hep-G2, MCF-7, and KB), while their antioxidant activities were assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The n-hexane and dichloromethane extracts displayed weak activity against these cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 90.60 ± 3.49 to 98.27 ± 2.77 µg/mL. All extracts showed antioxidant activities, and the methanol extract exhibited the strongest at an SC50 value of 9.39 ± 0.90 µg/mL. This is the first report on the volatile constituents and bioactivities of G. bulot leaf extracts, suggesting their potential application as antioxidants.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile duct tumor. Esophageogastroduodenoscopy showed a friable duodenal cap mucosa with multiple ulcers and edematous mucosa of the second part of the duodenum that caused a partial lumen obstruction. The final histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic duodenitis with larvae consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient was treated with Ivermectin for two weeks and anticoagulation therapy for three months. After treatment and a six-month follow-up, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms and leg swelling resolved completely. This is the first documented case of a patient in Vietnam with strongyloidiasis who presented with venous thromboembolism and duodenal obstruction.

Antimicrobial pectin/chitosan composite films have potential as wound dressing and food packaging. However, almost biofilms were synthesized through chemical routes, causing eco-unfriendliness, and negative impacts on the environment and human health. Green synthesis of composite films incorporating with biosynthesized AgNPs is therefore necessary to enhance mechanical and antimicrobial activities. This study focused on the influence of biosynthesized AgNPs on characteristics of passion fruit peel pectin/chitosan (P/CH) biofilms. Characterization, mechanical, antimicrobial activities of P/CH/AgNPs biofilms were evaluated. Incorporating AgNPs into P/CH-based films significantly exerted apparent color and optical properties of biofilms. As AgNPs concentration increased, P/CH/AgNPs biofilms had higher water content (20.1%), better water vapor permeability (1.28 × 10–9 g/mm h Pa), but lower mechanical, water solubility (43.98%), swelling (630.29 ± 11.79%) indexes. P/CH/AgNPs biofilms exhibited outstanding antibacterial properties against S. aureus, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumonia. As expected, in vivo results consolidated the evidence of excellent wound closure (100%) of P/CH/AgNPs biofilms after 15 days. Our findings recommend P/CH/AgNPs antibacterial biofilms have promising biomedical applications.

Introduction:Curcuma xanthella Škorničk. is a rare species. Recently, it has been described as a new species from Vietnam.

Purpose – Single-party regimes increasingly use Subnational Performance Assessments (SPAs) – rankings of provinces and districts – to improve governance outcomes. SPAs assemble and publicize information on local government performance to facilitate monitoring and generate competition among officials. However, the evidence are sparse on their effects in this context. The authors argue that built-in incentive structures in centralized single-party regimes distort the positive impact of SPAs. Design/methodology/approach – The staggered rollout of the Vietnam Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) created a natural experiment. Due to 2010 budget constraints, the first iteration of the PAPI survey covered only 30 of Vietnam’s 63 provinces before covering all in 2011. The PAPI team used matching procedures to identify a statistical twin for each province before randomly selecting one from each pair. The authors use randomization inference to compare the outcomes of these control and treatment groups in 2011. Findings – Exposure to PAPI helped improve almost all aspects of governance; however, significant evidence of prioritization bias exist. The positive effects only persisted for the dimension of administrative procedures, which was the one area of governance that was prioritized by the central government at the time. Other dimensions only registered short-term effects. Originality/value – Our study provides an examination of the impact of SPAs in a single-party regime context. In addition, the authors leverage the natural experiment to identify information effects causally. The authors also look past short-term effects to compare outcomes for five years after the treatment occurred.

Purpose: Our aim was to assess the different voice prostheses (VPs) to identify the most efficient, safest, patient-tailored, longest lifetime, and inexpensive VPs and assess the different factors affecting their quality. Method: In September 2017, 15 databases were searched to include all randomized controlled trials. A new search was done in May 2019 to include all other study design articles, which include all the new-era VPs subtypes. Network meta-analysis (NMA) was applied to all 27 outcomes, besides NMA overall and partial order setting was done by using Hasse scatter plots. p values were used in NMA, where the best VPs are approaching one and the least approaches zero. Meta-analysis was done for the rest of the outcomes. Results: Two hundred one articles were eligible for inclusion in our study (N = 11,918). Provox-2 was significantly the most efficient and safest device concerning the most patient preference (odds ratio [OR] = 33.88 [0.65, 1762.24]; p = 0.92), the least dislodgement (risk ratio [RR] = 0.27 [0.13, 0.57]; p = 0.79), the least airflow resistance (RR = 0.42 [0.08, 2.11]; p = 84), the least granulation formation (RR = 0.73 [0.02, 26.32]; p = 0.60), and the least VPs' inaccurate size (RR = 0.77 (0.23, 2.61); p = 0.66). Heat and moisture exchanger addition showed a significant increase in maximum phonation time and breathing experience, with p values (1 and 0.59), respectively. While heat and moisture exchanger addition showed a significant decline in stoma cleaning frequency, coughing frequency, forced expectoration, sputum production, sleeping problems, and loosening of adhesive, with p values (0.99, 0.72, 0.69, 0.96, 1, and 0.96), respectively, Groningen low resistance and Nijdam were considered the worst devices with both overall mean p value of 0.44. Conclusions: Provox-2 is considered the best choice as being the most preferable for patients, with the least airflow resistance, dislodgment, granulation formation, and prosthesis inaccurate size. Groningen low resistance and Nijdam were considered the worst devices according to our analysis.

Background: Educational interventions have been shown to be effective in reducing cancer pain for patients with cancer. However, there is a lack of educational intervention programs for cancer pain management in Vietnam, and none have been studied or implemented in clinical practice. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the cultural appropriateness and clinical applicability of a pain management educational intervention program modified from PRO-SELF©: Pain Control Program for patients with cancer. Methods: This quantitative descriptive study was conducted from January to June 2022 with 15 experts, including oncologists, nurses with palliative care and pain relief certifications, and pharmacists. Data were collected using a 23-item questionnaire rated on a 5-point scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The program was evaluated for its appropriateness, clinical applicability, and feasibility, resulting in high ratings with an average of 4.49 ± 0.23, 4.56 ± 0.33, and 4.29 ± 0.55, respectively. The general mean score of the items was 4.46 ± 0.22. Experts also provided comments for adjustments to the program, which were incorporated into a revised draft of the intervention program. Conclusions: The pain management educational intervention program for Vietnamese patients with cancer was considered appropriate and clinically applicable by the experts. Further clinical trials can now be conducted to evaluate the program’s effectiveness.

This study focused on the chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oil derived from Grewia bulot, a plant species known for its medicinal properties. The analysis of Grewia bulot essential oil revealed the presence of 78 constituents. The major compounds were α-cadinol (13.5%), 1,8-cineole (12.7%), 1,10-di-epi-cubenol (9.8%), epi-α-cadinol (6.7%), (E,E)-α-farnesene (5.9%), (E)-citral (4.0%), selin-11-en-4-α-ol (4.0%), citronellol isobutanoate (3.9%), and geranic acid (3.7%). The essential oil exhibited promising antioxidant potential with an IC50 value of 452.65 ± 28.40 µg/mL in DPPH model. This oil did not show NO production inhibitory effect in RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, the essential oil exhibited significant cytotoxicity against KB, Hep-G2, MCF-7, and SK-LU-1 cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 44.04 ± 1.47 to 74.20 ± 3.71 μg/mL. We have previously reported an HIV-1 mutant designated NL-Y226tac that expresses Vif at an ultra-low level, being replication-defective in high-APOBEC3G cells, such as H9. It carries a synonymous mutation within the splicing SA1 site relative to its parental clone. In order to determine whether a certain mutant(s) emerges during multi-infection cycles, we maintained H9 cells infected with a relatively low or high input of NL-Y226tac for extended time periods. Unexpectedly, we reproducibly identified a g5061a mutation in the SD2b site in the two independent long-term culture experiments that partially increases Vif expression and replication ability. Importantly, the adaptive mutation g5061a was demonstrated to enhance vif mRNA production by activation of the SA1 site mediated through increasing usage of a rarely used SD2b site. In the long-term culture initiated by a high virus input, we additionally found a Y226Fttc mutation at the original Y226tac site in SA1 that fully restores Vif expression and replication ability. As expected, the adaptive mutation Y226Fttc enhances vif mRNA production through increasing the splicing site usage of SA1. Our results here revealed the importance of the SD2b nucleotide sequence in producing vif mRNA involved in the HIV-1 adaptation and of mutual antagonism between Vif and APOBEC3 proteins in HIV-1 adaptation/evolution and survival.

Introduction: Coffee bee pollen contains some precious bioactive compounds, especially phenolic compounds. This material is easily found in many regions in Vietnam and is quite useful for human health.

This study investigates the therapeutic effects of Gardenia stenophylla Merr. Using experimental animal models, fruit extract (GSME) on pain, inflammation, and fever. The primary objective was to evaluate the analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities of GSME at varying dosages. Mice were administered GSME at 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg doses to assess their analgesic potential through writhing and hot plate tests. The antipyretic effect was evaluated using a fever-inducing model, while the anti-inflammatory potential was examined via the carrageenaninduced paw edema model at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg. Key parameters measured included reaction time, pain inhibition, rectal temperature, fever suppression, paw diameter, edema inhibition, and serum cytokine levels (IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-a). The results indicated that GSME significantly enhanced pain tolerance in the hot plate test and reduced writhing behavior, particularly at the dose of 200 mg/kg, resulting in a reduction of 54.01% (p < 0.05). In the fever model, GSME demonstrated a substantial reduction of 60.19% in rectal temperature after 4 hours (p < 0.05). Additionally, GSME effectively diminished paw edema and lowered serum concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These findings support the traditional use of Gardenia stenophylla for alleviating pain, reducing fever, and managing inflammation, highlighting its potential as a natural remedy for inflammatory conditions. Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.) is recognized for its antioxidative properties, making it a valuable herbal source for immune modulation and treating joint and muscle pain. This study investigated the antioxidative and immunosuppressive effects of the ethanol extract of Sacha inchi leaves (EESI) in a CFA-induced rheumatoid arthritis (RA) mouse model. Swiss albino mice were assigned to experimental groups receiving EESI at 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg doses, with mobic (0.2 mg/kg) serving as the standard drug. Key parameters assessed included malondialdehyde (MDA), hydroperoxide (H2O2), total glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), white blood cell (WBC) count, phagocytic activity (PA), nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction, and total immunoglobulin (TI). Results indicated a significant increase in MDA and H2O2 levels in the CFA group (p < 0.05), reflecting oxidative stress due to RA. EESI treatment significantly reduced MDA and H2O2 levels in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05), with the 300 mg/kg dose achieving effects comparable to mobic (p > 0.05). EESI also prevented the depletion of GSH and TAC observed in CFA-induced mice (p < 0.05) and enhanced CAT, SOD, and GPx activities, suggesting improved antioxidant defenses (p < 0.05). Additionally, EESI normalized WBC count, PA, NBT reduction, and TI levels altered by CFA, particularly at the 300 mg/kg dose (p > 0.05). These findings demonstrate the potential of EESI as an effective antioxidative and immunosuppressive agent for RA management, supporting its use as an alternative therapeutic option. Annona squamosa L. has been reported for its antioxidant, antiarthritic, antidiabetic, hypotensive, and hepatoprotective effects. This study evaluates the analgesic, antipyretic, and antiinflammatory effects of ethanol extract of A. squamosa fruit peel (ASEE) in Swiss albino mice models. ASEE was administered to the animals at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg, while tramadol (10 mg/kg), aspirin (150 mg/kg), paracetamol (50 mg/kg), and indomethacin (20 mg/kg) were used as reference drugs in algesia, pyrexia, and inflammation models, respectively. Parameters such as tail withdrawal latency, paw licking latency, writhing responses, rectal temperature, paw edema diameter, cytokine levels, pain inhibition percentage (PIT, PIH, and PRW), fever reduction percentage (PFR), and paw edema inhibition percentage (PPE) were assessed. Results indicate significant analgesic effects of ASEE at all doses (p < 0.05) within 30, 60, 90, and 120 min post-administration. ASEE significantly inhibited tail flick latency, pawlicking response, and writhing episodes induced by thermal stimuli and acetic acid (p < 0.05) and effectively reduced rectal temperature post yeast suspension (p < 0.05). Moreover, ASEE demonstrated notable anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced paw edema, with the highest efficacy observed at 5 h post-induction (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, ASEE significantly suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines; TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that ASEE holds promise as a natural therapeutic agent for managing pain, fever, and inflammatory conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Steviol stevioside, which has been used in the production of food products as a low-calorie sweeten, is one of the main glycoside groups in the leaves of the Stevia plants. It is useful for human health.

The present study aimed to synthesize biodegradable films based on crosslinked passion fruit peel pectin/chitosan (P/CH) films incorporated with a bioactive extract from Piper betle L. leaf, and investigate their morphological, mechanical, water vapor permeability, optical, and antibacterial properties. The thickness and water vapor permeability of P/CH blend films were proportional to the increasing concentration of Piper betle extract (PB). The tensile strength of P/CH/PB films was significantly reduced at 42.89% compared to the P/CH films. The morphological characterization affirmed that resultant blend films showed a well-organized homogeneous structure with no cracks. Moreover, the antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae increased with the increased concentration of PB in the obtained films. Our results demonstrated that P/CH/PB blend films could be potentially used for food packaging applications.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors for cutaneous adverse reactions (CARs) in Kinh Vietnamese. Methods All patients were prospectively recruited in Ho Chi Minh City. Presence of the HLA-B*58:01 allele was determined by real-time PCR-sequence-specific amplification by using the PG5801 Detection Kit (Pharmigene, Taipei). Patients with severe (SCARs) and mild (MCARs) CARs and controls were compared for differences in features prospectively collected, and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated.
