The model Internal Wave Dissipation, Energy and Mixing (IDEMIX) presents a novel way of parameterizing internal gravity waves in the atmosphere. IDEMIX is based on the spectral energy balance of the wave field and has previously been successfully developed as a model for diapycnal diffusivity, induced by internal gravity wave breaking in oceans. Applied here for the first time to atmospheric gravity waves, integration of the energy balance equation for a continuous wave field of a given spectrum, results in prognostic equations for the energy density of eastward and westward gravity waves. It includes their interaction with the mean flow, allowing for an evolving and local description of momentum flux and gravity wave drag. A saturation mechanism maintains the wave field within convective stability limits, and a closure for critical-layer effects controls how much wave flux propagates from the troposphere into the middle atmosphere. Offline comparisons to a traditional parameterization reveal increases in the wave momentum flux in the middle atmosphere due to the mean-flow interaction, resulting in a greater gravity wave drag at lower altitudes. Climate change imposes physiological constraints on organisms particularly through changing thermoregulatory requirements. Bergmann's and Allen's rules suggest that body size and the size of thermoregulatory structures differ between warm and cold locations, where body size decreases with temperature and thermoregulatory structures increase. However, phenotypic plastic responses to malnutrition during development can result in the same patterns while lacking fitness benefits. The Gulf of Maine (GOM), located at the southern end of the Labrador current, is warming faster than most of the world's oceans, and many of the marine species that occupy these waters exist at the southern edge of their distributions including Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica; hereafter "puffin"). Monitoring of puffins in the GOM, at Machias Seal Island (MSI), has continued annually since 1995. We asked whether changes in adult puffin body size and the proportional size of bill to body have changed with observed rapid ocean warming. We found that the size of fledgling puffins is negatively related to sea surface temperature anomalies (warm conditions = small fledgers), adult puffin size is related to fledgling size (small fledgers = small adults), and adult puffins have decreased in size in recent years in response to malnutrition during development. We found an increase in the proportional size of bill to wing chord, likely in response to some mix of malnutrition during development and increasing air temperatures. Although studies have assessed clinal variation in seabird morphology with temperature, this is the first study addressing changes in seabird morphology in relation to ocean warming. This paper addresses a major shortcoming of the current generation of wave models, namely their inability to describe wave propagation upon ambient currents with vertical shear. The wave action conservation equation (WAE) for linear waves propagating in horizontally inhomogeneous vertically-sheared currents is derived following Voronovich (1976). The resulting WAE specifies conservation of a certain depth-averaged quantity, the wave action, a product of the wave amplitude squared, eigenfunctions and functions of the eigenvalues of the boundary value problem for water waves upon a vertically sheared current. The formulation of the WAE is made explicit using known asymptotic solutions of the boundary value problem which exploit the smallness of the current magnitude compared to the wave phase velocity and/or its vertical shear and curvature; the adopted approximations are shown to be sufficient for most of the conceivable applications. In the limit of vanishing current shear, the new formulation reduces to that of Bretherton and Garrett (1968) without shear and the invariant is calculated with the current magnitude taken at the free surface. It is shown that in realistic oceanic conditions, the neglect of the vertical structure of the currents in wave modelling which is currently universal might lead to significant errors in wave amplitude. The new WAE which takes into account the vertical shear can be better coupled to modern circulation models which resolve the three-dimensional structure of the uppermost layer of the ocean. Contents A critical period of early gestation in the mare involves the immobilization (fixation) of the encapsulated conceptus at around days 16–17. We compared the major proteins in the normal equine embryonic capsule and endometrial secretions around the period of fixation with those from pregnancies in the process of termination induced by administration of an analogue of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Uterocalin and β2-microglobulin (β2M) associated with the embryonic capsule were proteolytically converted to smaller forms during the fixation period. These conversions were similar in conceptuses from control and treated mares. A 17 kDa cationic protein identified as a secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) type IIA was detected bound to normal capsules but increased substantially in response to PGF2α. Two forms of uteroglobin were distinguished by partial amino acid sequences of ∼6 kDa bands in flush fluids from normal pregnant uteri. After administration of PGF2α one immunoreactive form of uteroglobin was preferentially increased. These studies demonstrate that failure of pregnancy in this model is associated with an increase in secretory phospholipase in the capsule and a change in the forms of uteroglobin in the uterine secretions. OBJECTIVE AND PARTICIPANTS: The authors examined the prevalence of mental health needs in international graduate students, their knowledge of mental health services, and their use of on-campus and off-campus counseling services. METHODS: All registered graduate students in the Spring 2004 semester received an e-mail invitation to participate in a Web survey. Of the 3,121 completed surveys, 551 completed surveys were from international graduate students. RESULTS: Approximately 44% of international graduate students responded that they had had an emotional or stress-related problem that significantly affected their well-being or academic performance within the past year. International students who reported a more functional relationship with their advisors were less likely to report having an emotional or stress-related problem in the past year and using counseling services. International students who reported higher financial confidence were also less likely to use counseling services. CONCLUSIONS: There is an unmet mental health need among international graduate students. Special mental health outreach efforts should be directed at international graduate students, with particular attention on the relationship between students and their advisors and on adequate financial support for students. Abstract: The injection Y has been designed and built for the University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER). The design incorporates a combination of two unique printed circuit magnet designs. The dipole component of an offset quadrupole and a pulsed dipole are used to achieve the 10° bend required from the injection line. The current for each magnet is supplied by its own pulse-forming network (PFN). The dipole PFN is designed as a long pulse (300V, 15A, 20μs duration) for multiple beam passes with a short pulse (2kV, −30A, 100ns flat top duration) superimposed for beam extraction. To accommodate field penetration a glass gap covers the area near the pulsed dipole. The glass gap has a thin conductive coating on the inner surface to minimize perturbations on the beam due to changing boundary conditions. The completed Y assembly has been installed on the downstream end of the beam line to facilitate experimental tests before closure of the ring. The neuropathology of Alzheimer''s disease (AD) reflects a precarious balance between neurodegenerative phenomena and reactive events of neuroplasticity. This latter aspect of AD neuropathology has received less attention than it deserves and its contribution to memory loss is therefore not well understood. To monitor neuroplastic-related events we studied the distribution of the plasticity-associated, brain growth protein GAP-43 in AD subjects and age-matched controls. In tissue from AD patients, we observed a consistent elevation of GAP-43 in a subfield of the hippocampus, stratum lacunosum moleculare. This subfield contains inputs from multiple brain regions and is known to regulate declarative memory function. Levels of potentially aberrant sprouting, as marked by elevated growth protein, were positively correlated with the severity of AD suggesting that increased expression of GAP-43 leads to a miswiring of circuits critical for memory function. Our findings suggest a mechanism, aberrant neuroplasticity, that in concert with neurodegeneration may importantly contribute to the memory loss in AD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A palisade of long, interlaminar astroglial processes in supragranular layers of the cerebral cortex is characteristic of adult individuals of anthropoid species. In the present study, this distinctive cytoarchitectonic feature was analyzed in tissue deriving from the neocortex of cases affected by Alzheimer’s disease (n=14) and age-matched control cases (n=10). Samples of different cortical areas, and in particular prefrontal, temporal and striate fields, were analyzed. Astroglia was labeled by glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity, that allowed a clear distinction between the classical, stellate intralaminar astroglia and the interlaminar glial processes. The occurrence and relative density of neuritic plaques were ascertained in the same specimens with Bielchowsky staining. In most cortical regions of cases diagnosed as severe Alzheimer’s disease by the donor institutions, interlaminar astroglia was found to be markedly altered or absent, and replaced by hypertrophic intralaminar astrocytes. Cases diagnosed as milder or uncertain Alzheimer’s disease showed a less consistent involvement of the interlaminar glial palisade. Alterations of the interlaminar palisade in the cortex affected by Alzheimer’s disease did not strictly correlate with the density of neuritic plaques in the examined specimens. The findings indicate that loss/severe disruption of the interlaminar palisade of astroglial processes is part of the array of neuropathological changes occurring in the cerebral cortex during Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, our data indicate that different types of neocortical astrocytes (namely intralaminar and interlaminar astrocytes) respond differently to the pathobiology of Alzheimer’s disease in the neocortex, inasmuch as interlaminar processes tend to disappear while intralaminar processes become reactive. Kay has proposed a technique for estimating the frequency of a complex sinusoid in additive noise, the real and imaginary parts of which are independent and normally distributed with means zero and the same variance. For fixed sample size the estimator achieves the Cramer–Rao lower bound for unbiased estimators of the frequency in the limit as the signal to noise ratio approaches infinity. It has been noted by Lovell and Williamson, however, that the estimator is biased. It is shown in this paper that under Kay's assumptions the estimator is not consistent (for fixed signal to noise ratio the estimator converges almost surely, as the sample size N increases, to a number that is not the true frequency, no matter how large the signal to noise ratio). A class of distributions for the additive noise is proposed under which the technique is strongly consistent and has the correct order of asymptotic variance, namely N[sup -3] , for the case where there is some a priori knowledge concerning the range of the frequency. In Quinn & Fernandes (1991), an iterative technique was presented for the estimation of the frequency of a sinusoid in the presence of noise. The technique is more robust to poor initial estimates than is the periodogram maximiser. A generalisation to the case of multiple sinusoids is presented in this paper, and it is shown that the original estimator may be interpreted as the maximiser of a smoothed version of the periodogram. The skeletal composition of calcifying organisms, in particular Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios, have been widely used to understand fluctuations in seawater chemistry throughout the Phanerozoic. While the success of applying these data to the geologic record depends on a knowledge of the distribution coefficients for these elements ( D Mg and D Sr ), there are scarcely any studies which have described how these values vary as a result of changing seawater Mg/Ca ratios. To address this, we have cultured the scleractinian coral, Pocillopora damicornis , in seawater with ranges of Mg and Ca concentrations. Here, we demonstrate that Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios of coral skeletons correlate with total seawater Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca molar ratios, but that apparent D Mg and D Sr values do not remain constant across the range of experimental seawater treatments, with D Mg values significantly increasing with seawater Mg/Ca ratios and D Sr values significantly increasing with seawater Ca concentrations. These trends are not rate dependent and may be best explained by a Rayleigh distillation model, in which the calcifying space is semi-isolated from seawater during skeletogenesis (i.e. leaky). As there is a slight increase in D Mg and decrease in D Sr values between our “Jurassic” and “Modern” seawater treatments, the application of a constant distribution coefficient to estimate changes in ancient seawater chemistry may underestimate seawater Mg/Ca ratios and overestimate Sr/Ca throughout the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. We suggest that interpretations of seawater chemistry from fossil corals may be improved by using the relationships derived for skeletal and seawater Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios established by our experiments, as they incorporate the effect of seawater Mg/Ca ratios on skeletal Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios. The effects of shear upon the aggregation of solid objects formed from solid triacylglycerols (TAGs) immersed in liquid TAG oils were modeled using Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) and the predictions compared to experimental data using Ultra-Small Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS). The solid components were represented by spheres interacting via attractive van der Waals forces and short range repulsive forces. A velocity was applied to the liquid particles nearest to the boundary, and Lees-Edwards boundary conditions were used to transmit this motion to nonboundary layers via dissipative interactions. The shear was created through the dissipative forces acting between liquid particles. Translational diffusion was simulated, and the Stokes-Einstein equation was used to relate DPD length and time scales to SI units for comparison with USAXS results. The SI values depended on how large the spherical particles were (250 nm vs. 25 nm). Aggregation was studied by (a) computing the Structure Function and (b) quantifying the number of pairs of solid spheres formed. Solid aggregation was found to be enhanced by low shear rates. As the shear rate was increased, a transition shear region was manifested in which aggregation was inhibited and shear banding was observed. Aggregation was inhibited, and eventually eliminated, by further increases in the shear rate. The magnitude of the transition region shear, Ṁγt, depended on the size of the solid particles, which was confirmed experimentally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To determine the level of agreement between staff and students' assessment of clinical skills in performing tasks related to cavity preparation on a traditional dental manikin. Methods Two studies were conducted with two successive student cohorts: Study 1-138 year 1 BDS students in a 2009/10 cohort and Study 2-135 students in a 2010/11 cohort. Staff members and students rated the students' performance in preparing a cavity on a traditional dental manikin using artificial teeth: hand-held (Study 1) and located in a lower jaw (Study 2). A 5-item criterion-related scoring rubric was developed. The rubric assessed students' abilities to hold the instrument correctly, determine the angle of entry to the tooth, remove the caries, conserve healthy tissues and avoid pulp exposure. Results Agreement between the students' self-assessment and the staff's assessment was high for three of the five criteria (i.e. removal of artificial caries on the cavity wall, removal of artificial caries from the cavity floor and avoidance of pulp exposure). Levels of agreement for the remaining two criteria were moderate. A change in task difficulty affected the levels of agreement between staff and students, such that the more difficult the task, the greater the discrepancy in ratings. Conclusions Students tend to overrate the quality of their performance when compared with staff ratings. Task difficulty has an impact on levels of agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For each woman in the sample, a range of assessments was conducted on three separate occasions over a 12-month period. We noted a gradual improvement over time in women in both settings. However, by the final assessment psychological well-being and security needs were significantly better in the community group ( P < 0.05). Although risks for violence and social functioning were also somewhat better in this group throughout the study, no statistically significant differences between the groups were found in these areas at any assessment time. This study has generated evidence in support of the further development of high-support step-down community housing for women in secure psychiatric care. Abstract: A light-emitting diode (LED) pulser for testing the low-rate response of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) to scintillator-like pulses has been designed, developed, and implemented. This pulser is intended to simulate 85ns full width at half maximum photon pulses over the dynamic range of the PMT, in order to precisely determine PMT linearity. This particular design has the advantage that, unlike many LED test rigs, it does not require the use of multiple calibrated LEDs, making it insensitive to LED gain drifts. Instead, a finite-difference measurement is made using two LEDs which need not be calibrated with respect to one another. These measurements give a better than 1% mapping of the response function, allowing for the testing and development of particularly linear PMT bases. They also yield a functional form for the response of the PMT to a range of pulse sizes, which can be used in detector simulation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In pelagic carbonate sediments, the degree to which the δ13C values of inorganic and organic fractions co-vary has been used to interpret rates of production, burial and decomposition of organic carbon. This relationship is relatively consistent through time, permitting estimates of organic carbon production and preservation. However, as the majority of pelagic sediments older than 200 Myr have been subducted, carbonate sediments deposited in epeiric seas and platforms are often substituted for pelagic carbonates in analyses of ancient global carbon cycling. There are well-known pitfalls to using shallow marine carbonate materials, including diagenesis, semi-isolation of depositional environments and input of different types of sediments with varying inorganic δ13C (δ13Cinorganic) values, which can obscure any global signatures. One method used to assess whether global changes in δ13C are accurately represented by δ13Cinorganic records is to examine variations in the δ13C of co-occurring organic material (δ13Corganic). If a δ13Corganic record co-varies with a co-occurring δ13Cinorganic record, it is argued that the signals must be related to variations in the global carbon cycle. This assumption has been investigated by analysing the isotopic composition of the organic carbon preserved in the uppermost 150 m of periplatform sediments recovered during ODP Leg 166 from the western margin of Great Bahama Bank. The δ13Corganic values measured in this study were compared to previously published δ13Cinorganic records measured on identical samples, thus allowing a study of the correlation between the two records through time. These analyses showed that the correlation coefficient between δ13Cinorganic and δ13Corganic increased from the proximal location (Site 1005, r2 = 0·1), to the distal site (Site 1006, r2 = 0·63). The importance of platform-derived carbonate and organic material at the proximal location, Site 1005, is reflected in the absence of a co-variation between inorganic and organic δ13C records, which exhibit no correlation on the platform itself. In contrast, the co-variance in δ13C values at the basinal location, Site 1006, is explained by a two-point mixing model, which demonstrates the importance of both pelagic and platform-derived carbonate and organic carbon in generating the positive correlation between the organic and inorganic δ13C values; this results in a correlation between δ13Cinorganic and δ13Corganic records at Site 1006 that is unrelated to global carbon cycling. Such data question the applicability of using δ13Corganic values to support the ability of δ13Cinorganic values to record global carbon cycling in carbonates recovered from environments where multiple sources of carbonate and organic carbon contribute to the bulk δ13C signal. There is a dearth of research that has explored alcohol/drug use and misuse by people with intellectual disabilities. The aims of the present study were twofold: (1) to examine the insights of 10 people with intellectual disabilities into the reasons why they may misuse alcohol or drugs, and what impact this behaviour may have on them; and (2) to explore the services that they receive. Ten individuals with intellectual disabilities who were deemed to be misusing alcohol/drugs were purposively selected and interviewed. One overarching theme of the reasons for such misuse was labelled as ‘self-medicating against life's negative experiences’. This was divided into two sub-themes: ‘psychological trauma’ and ‘social distance from the community’. All the participants reported that their main source of support came from intellectual disability services, acting in both educational and liaison roles. Although seven of the individuals were referred to mainstream addiction services, they perceived this service as negative. In order to address these underlying problems, better access to a wider range of specialist services is required. Intellectual disability and mainstream addiction service providers also need to be more effective in the prevention and treatment of substance misuse by employing techniques such as motivational interviewing. Background Little is known about the characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) who misuse substances and how such problems impinge upon their well-being. The aim of this paper is to describe how alcohol and drugs affect the health of people with IDs. Methods A questionnaire was forwarded to all the community ID teams and mainstream addiction teams across Northern Ireland: 67 substance users with IDs and substantial substance-related problems were identified. Results Alcohol was found to be the main substance to be misused, with one-fifth of the substance users also found to be using a combination of illicit drugs and/or prescribed medication. Nearly three-quarters of the sample were found to be hazardously using alcohol for more than 5 years. Being male and young, having a borderline/mild ID, living independently and having a mental health problem were found to be risk factors for developing a ‘substance related problem’. Various problematic behaviours were identified, including aggression, erratic mood changes, sexual exploitation, difficulties in maintaining relationships and loss of daily routine. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that greater emphasis needs to be placed upon the early identification of this hidden population by primary and secondary healthcare personnel, and also ID personnel. Such early identification may also diminish the long-established patterns of use and associated related-behaviours that have been reported within this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generation and evolution of perturbations and modulations in intense charged particle beams are of key importance for many accelerator applications. Prior work focused on perturbations and modulations produced in gridded electron guns with thermionic cathodes. By using a drive laser, photoemission can produce perturbations within a longer beam generated by thermionic emission. These perturbations affect beam density only, while previous experiments with gridded guns produced perturbations in both beam density and velocity. We have extended these capabilities by developing a flexible system to produce multiple perturbations whose timing and amplitude can be easily adjusted for beam research applications. To further characterize the putative role of constitutive and inducible plasma proteins in innate resistance to furunculosis, the present authors compared the alterations in profiles of plasma proteins in resistant and susceptible salmonids, i.e. rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), respectively. Rainbow trout were injected with prednisolone acetate and exposed to higher water temperature (18 °C versus 10 °C), or injected with purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from a virulent strain of Aeromonas salmonicida, and plasma components were examined by two-dimensional polyacrylamide electrophoresis. Two days after A. salmonicida LPS exposure, rainbow trout had a four- to five-fold increase in concentrations of plasma proteins composed of p48, p19 and p16 subunits, and a significant decrease in a 100-kDa protein group. Consistent elevation or depletion of proteins corresponding to previously reported rainbow trout A. salmonicida LPS-binding pentraxins and lectins in plasma were not observed. Brook trout exposed to A. salmonicida LPS did not have any consistent plasma protein changes. There were no significant alterations in major plasma proteins following temperature shock and prednisolone acetate administration in rainbow trout plasma. These studies demonstrate that rainbow trout with LPS-induced sterile inflammation have few alterations in major plasma proteins or LPS-binding proteins, and do not exhibit the spectrum of acute phase changes induced by inflammation in mammals. HCAL-J is a hadron calorimeter under construction at JLAB in Newport News, VA (USA). The main interest of the JLAB physics is the study of the hadron matter properties, using a longitudinally polarised electron beam; in particular, researchers investigate the electromagnetic form factors of nuclei and nucleons using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator, which provides a beam of 12 GeV electrons. The upgrade to higher energies allows measurements at high values of Q² and a more in-depth study of the internal structure of the hadron matter. To this purpose, Hall A collaboration is building the SuperBigBite Spectrometer (SBS), which consists of a series of elements including a dipole magnet to curve the trajectory of the recoil particles, and a series of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) to track the particles. Moreover, two analyzers for the measurement of the polarisation components and a hadron calorimeter, HCAL-J, to measure the particle energy, are used in order to apply the so-called recoil polarisation method, which consists in measuring both the longitudinal and transverse polarisation of the scattered nucleon. The study, through SBS, of the electromagnetic form factors of nucleons allows obtaining the ratio between these two components, which results to be proportional to the ratio between the electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon. HCAL-J is a sampling calorimeter useful to measure the energy of the recoil nucleon; its active area consists of 288 modules that include a matrix with 24 modules in height and 12 in width. There are optical fibres in between each module, connected to a photomultiplier, in order to look at the light from the scintillating material and convert it into an electric signal, related to the energy of the incident particle. Abstract: Interprofessional collaborative care (IPC) is defined as working within and across healthcare disciplines and is considered essential to achieve a more inclusive, patient‐centred care, provide a means to support patient safety and address global healthcare provider shortages. Interprofessional education (IPE) provides the knowledge and experience students need to achieve these goals. ADEE/ADEA held a joint international meeting 8‐9 May 2017, with IPE being one of four topic areas discussed. The highly interactive workshop format, where “everyone was an expert,” supported discussion, sharing and creative problem‐solving of over seventy‐one participants from twenty‐nine countries. IPE participants broke out into five groups over a two‐day period discussing three main areas: challenges and barriers to implementing IPE within their institution or country; discussion of successful models of introducing and assessing IPE initiatives, and exploring best practices and next steps for implementation for each group member. A mind‐mapping model was used to graphically display participants’ thoughts and suggestions. Key themes, revealed through the visual mind maps and discussion, included the following: IPE should lead to and enhance patient‐centred care; student involvement is key to IPE success; faculty development and incentives can facilitate adoption and implementation of IPE; the role of a “champion” and leadership structure and commitment is important to move IPE forward; and IPE must be tailored to the unique issues found in each country. Ultra-high performance concrete is a specialized class of cementitious materials notable for very high compressive strength, increased toughness, and improved durability relative to conventional concrete. Due to its high cement content and the use of very finely ground crystalline silica, ultra-high performance concrete has a greater cost and CO 2 footprint than normal concrete. Potential health concerns can also arise due to repeated inhalation of crystalline silica powder during production. Finely ground limestone powder was hypothesized as a potential filler to help minimize these negative aspects when used as either a partial or full mass replacement of similarly sized cement and silica powder. Limestone powder was shown to have a positive effect on fresh properties of the composite including mixing time and workability. Small replacements of cement were shown to have beneficial effects on compressive strength. Scanning electron microscopy showed that limestone powder replaced unreacted materials without significantly impacting hydration reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anemia in salmonid aquaculture is a recognized blood disorder resulting from the reduction of hemoglobin concentration and/or erythrocyte count. Because of sub-optimal oxygen supply to the tissues, as a negative impact of anemia fish will experience reduced growth and poor health. This health challenge may be linked with several factors including anthropogenic changes in the marine environment, infectious etiology (viral, bacterial, and parasitic), nutritional deficiencies, or hemorrhaging. From the mid-late summer of 2017 to 2019, Scottish salmon farming companies began to report the occurrence of anemic events in open-net marine sites. At that time, the industry had little understanding of the pathogenesis and possible mechanisms of anemia and limited the ability to formulate effective mitigation strategies. Clinical examination of fish raised suspicion of anemia and this was confirmed by generating a packed cell volume value by centrifugation of a microhematocrit tube of whole anticoagulated blood. Company health team members, including vets and biologists, reported discoloration of gills and local hemorrhages. This paper reviews various commercially significant cases and lesser-known cases of anemia in cultured salmonid species induced by various biological factors. The current methods available to assess hematology are addressed and some future methods that could be adopted in modern day fish farming are identified. An account of the most recent anemic event in Scottish farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is presented and discussed as a case study from information provided by two major Scottish salmon producers. The percent of total marine sites (n = 80) included in this case study, that reported with suspected or clinical anemia covering the period mid-late summer 2017 to 2019, was between 1 and 13%. The findings from this case study suggest that anemia experienced in most cases was regenerative and most likely linked to blood loss from the gills. • Anemia outbreaks identified in 1–13% of Scottish Atlantic salmon farms surveyed mid-late summer 2017 to 2019. • In most cases, anemia was regenerative and likely linked to blood loss via the gills. • Anemia is most likely associated with microhemorrhages identified on the gills and liver. • Routine hematology required for fish health monitoring and the development of automated analyzers is required. Abstract: We have modeled, tested, and installed a large, cerium-activated Gd2SiO5 crystal scintillator for use as a detector of gamma rays. We present the measured detector response to two types of incident photons: nearly monochromatic photons up to 40MeV, and photons from a continuous Compton backscattering spectrum up to 200MeV. Our GEANT4 simulations, developed to determine the analyzing power of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab, reproduce the measured spectra well. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This guideline, initially drawn up for use in the UK, is essentially based on ethical principles and should be applicable across other jurisdictions. The document specifically addresses the issues which surround obtaining consent from adults for the administration of systemic anti-cancer therapy in the haemato-oncology setting. Consenting to a treatment or procedure is a complex medical, ethical, and legal issue. The process of obtaining consent and the general steps that should be taken by the healthcare professional involved in obtaining consent from a patient are discussed, and the potential legal and ethical pitfalls which can be encountered are outlined. Of fundamental importance are the requirements that agreement must be given voluntarily, based on adequate information, and the patient must have the ability to understand and retain the information given and be in a position to use it in order to reach a decision. The consenting process should include an explanation of the expected outcomes and possible side effects of treatment even if these are unlikely to occur, and the nature of the consenting process undertaken should be clearly documented. Obtaining consent in an emergency situation is also discussed, as is the process of consenting in individuals with impaired capacity or special needs. Abstract: The photon arm of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab has been upgraded to allow for electron beam polarization measurements with better than 1% accuracy. The data acquisition (DAQ) system now includes an integrating mode, which eliminates several systematic uncertainties inherent in the original counting-DAQ setup. The photon calorimeter has been replaced with a Ce-doped Gd2SiO5 crystal, which has a bright output and fast response, and works well for measurements using the new integrating method at electron beam energies from 1 to 6GeV. We use distorted wave electron scattering calculations to extract the weak charge form factor Fw(q), the weak charge radius Rw, and the point neutron radius Rn of 208Pb from the Lead Radius Experiment (PREX) parity-violating asymmetry measurement. The form factor is the Fourier transform of the weak charge density at the average momentum transfer &qmacr; = 0.475 fm-1. We find Fw(&qmacr;) = 0.204±0.028 (exp) ±0.001 (model). We use the Helm model to infer the weak radius from Fw(&qmacr;). We find Rw = 5.826 ± 0.181 (exp) ± 0.027 (model) fm. Here the experimental error includes PREX statistical and systematic errors, while the model error describes the uncertainty in Rw from uncertainties in the surface thickness a of the weak charge density. The weak radius is larger than the charge radius, implying a "weak charge skin" where the surface region is relatively enriched in weak charges compared to (electromagnetic) charges. We extract the point neutron radius Rn = 5.751 ± 0.175 (exp) ± 0.026 (model) ± 0.005 (strange) fm from Rw. Here there is only a very small error (strange) from possible strange quark contributions. We find Rn to be slightly smaller than Rw because of the nucleon's size. Finally, we find a neutron skin thickness of Rn -- Rp = 0.302 ± 0.175 (exp) ± 0.026 (model) ± 0.005 (strange) fm, where Rp is the point proton radius. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
