The present research focuses on help-seeking process among perpetrators and co-victims of filicides committed in the province of Quebec. This study draws a portrait of help-seeking behaviors among perpetrators and co-victims of a filicide and presents two clinical vignettes to illustrate the help-seeking process. The 28 cases of filicides (14 paternal and 14 maternal filicides) committed in Quebec between 2007 and 2012 were analyzed using the Grille d'analyse multidimensionnelle de l'homicide intrafamilial. One-third of filicide perpetrators consulted a professional or a support service in their lifetime. The requests for assistance tend to decrease in the year prior to the homicide. A small percentage of requests for help are observed among co-victims of filicide. The results allow to describe a complete portrait of help-seeking from perpetrators and co-victims of filicide and help raise the importance of understanding the phenomenon with a robust and responsive theoretical framework. This study highlights the relevance of developing and maintaining specific services for men and women in crisis and at risk of violent behavior. Cognitive views claim that ethnic, national, and racial communities are malleable and constantly transforming, while more structural accounts consider these collective communities highly static. This article considers communal transformations at the population level, combines aspects of cognitive and structural perspectives, and uses path dependence to explain why collective communities are transformative in some instances but much more rigid in others. It claims that communal boundaries are usually relatively static because communal structures reinforce them through three main mechanism of reproduction, all of which can reproduce communal frameworks through inclusion and exclusion: cost, power, and socialization. In turn, the article describes how two types of critical juncture create openings for more punctuated and extensive communal transformations. Constructive critical junctures occur prior to the existence of powerful mechanisms of communal reproduction and make possible the construction of new communal frameworks. Alternatively, transformative critical junctures are openings for change that result from the weakening or breakdown of extant mechanisms of reproduction and generally promote transformations in preexisting communal frameworks. To clarify and support the argument, the article provides a variety of examples and an analysis of transformations in the Quebecois collective community. L'article pretend que les frontieres communautaires sont relativement statiques parce que les structures communautaires les renforcent par trois mecanismes de reproduction qui peuvent tous reproduire des cadres communautaires par l'inclusion et l'exclusion: le cout, le pouvoir et la socialisation. A son tour, l'article decrit comment deux types de jonction critique creent des ouvertures pour des transformations communautaires plus ponctuees et etendues. Les jonctions critiques constructives se produisent avant l'existence de mecanismes puissants de reproduction communautaire et rendent possible la construction de nouveaux cadres communautaires. Alternativement, les jonctions critiques transformatrices sont des ouvertures pour le changement qui resultent de l'affaiblissement ou de la rupture des mecanismes de reproduction existants et favorisent generalement les transformations dans les cadres communautaires preexistants. What made the conscription crisis of 1917 so dangerous for the fledgling nation were the shrill denunciations of Quebec emanating from English Canada that stoked the passions of an already enflamed populace in Quebec. Yet, there were voices of moderation in English Canada, namely various Protestant denominational newspapers that counseled understanding from their readers. The responses manifested in the press indicated the realization that the new nation could not survive harsh anti-Catholic rhetoric. The conscription crisis made it clear--to repeat the vitriol of the past was to threaten Canada's future. The same nation-building role that prompted the churches to evangelize Catholics and to win the race to the West motivated the denominational press to condemn anti-French rhetoric and to encourage an understanding of French-Canadian history, culture and religion. Consequently, and ironically, the Protestant denominational press, a formidable tool to Protestantize Canada, became--at least for a few brief months--a proponent of conciliation. This article explores the genesis of the built heritage landscape in Quebec, namely monuments and built ensembles deemed to incarnate the identity and collective memory of Quebec--or more specifically French Canada. Using examples from the twentieth century, we look at how several famous Quebec sites, developed for both tourism and heritage purposes, were endowed with symbolic 'Frenchness, thus illustrating the centripetal nature of the identity creation process initiated in tourism areas in Quebec's hinterland and subsequently transferred to cities. Since Quebec's Quiet Revolution, questions regarding Canada's francophonie are generally limited to Quebec, while forgetting the francophone communities located in what is known as 'English Canada. This means that an entire component of Canada's cultural landscape tends to be ignored. This article aims to rectify that situation through the use of the heartland-hinterland concept to refer to the relationship between Quebec, considered as the heart or core of the country's francophonie, and its margins or backwoods, located in the 'rest of Canada. From March 2006 to December 2007, the province of Quebec experienced a contentious public debate on diversity. The 'crisis' was fueled by a 'media tsunami' during which news outlets actively reported on numerous cases of reasonable accommodation practices or administrative agreements in public services granted in the Greater Montreal region to citizens of immigrant background (Giasson et al., 2008). Through this extensive coverage, the media brought these instances of accommodation to the public's attention. The research studies the press coverage that 11 daily newspapers dedicated to the state of public opinion in Quebec during the active and intense development phase of the 'crisis'. The study shows that in their analysis of polis and their general framing of the mood of public opinion towards reasonable accommodation, newspapers focused mostly on the malaise in the population toward immigration and religious diversity rather than on its openness to diversity and to the positive social outcomes of immigration. In doing so, the media further anchored the popular impression that a serious social crisis was ongoing and that a wide gap in tolerance existed between Franco-phone Quebeckers, Quebeckers of recent immigrant background and other Canadians. Objective: A literature review on the incidence of different forms of child maltreatment revealed that rates in Australia and Quebec (Canada) were similar. This study sought to determine the prevalence and co-occurrence of various forms of violence (physical, sexual and psychological) and explore gender and age difference. Methods: A telephone inquiry was conducted with a representative sample of 1,002 adults from the province of Quebec. Results: More than one in three adults (37%) reported having experienced at least one of three forms of violence in childhood. Twelve per cent (12%) of the adults experienced two forms of violence while 4% of the respondents reported having experienced all three forms of violence in childhood. Psychological violence (22%) was the form most frequently reported, followed by physical violence (19%) and sexual violence (16%). The different prevalence rates did not vary as a function of age. However, regarding gender, women were more likely to report having been sexually victimised (rape and fondling) and less likely to report having experienced physical violence. A lower percentage of women reported having sustained no form of childhood victimisation and a higher percentage of women reported have experienced both sexual and psychological violence compared to men. Conclusion: These results, including both the global rates and those particular to each gender, are comparable to findings in similar North American studies. The co-occurrence rates noted are salient enough to necessitate particular attention to diverse clinical clientele and need to be considered in future research exploring the risk factors of violence and its subsequent repercussions. Au Quebec, plusieurs groupes d'acteurs travaillent a structurer un projet d'avenir pour le monde rural La question identitaire traverse leurs reflexions. Le rapport au territoire est concu comme un trait specifique de l'identite rurale contemporaine. Par ailleurs, le paysage offre un cadre de reference pertinent a l'analyse de cette identite faconnee par les acteurs. Cela suppose que, d'un point de vue theorique, le paysage soit envisage selon une approche constructiviste, qui va au-dela des formes visibles pour englober aussi les references aux pratiques territoriales et les intentions des acteurs sociaux, de meme que des dimensions immaterielles, telles les representations et l'affectivite. Numerous studies are currently addressing the issue of contextual effects on health and disease outcomes. The majority of these studies fall short of providing a theoretical basis with which to explain what context is and how it affects individual disease outcomes. We propose a theoretical model, entitled collective lifestyles, which brings together three concepts from practice theory: social structure, social practices and agency. We do so in an attempt to move away from both behavioural and structural-functionalist explanations of the differential distribution of disease outcomes among areas by including a contextualisation of health behaviours that considers their meaning. We test the framework using the empirical example of smoking and pre-adolescents in 32 communities across Quebec, Canada. Social structure is operationalised as characteristics and resources; characteristics are the socio-economic aggregate characteristics of individuals culled from the 1996 Canadian Census, and resources are what regulates and transforms smoking practices. Information about social practices was collected in focus groups with pre-adolescents from four of the participating communities. Using zero-order and partial correlations we find that a portrait of communities emerges. Where there is a high proportion of more socio-economically advantaged people, resources tend to be more smoking discouraging, with the opposite being true for disadvantaged communities. Upon analysis of the focus group material, however, we find that the social practices in communities do not necessarily reflect the 'objectified' measures of social structure. We suggest that a different conceptualisation of accessibility and lifestyle in contextual studies may enable us to improve our grasp on how differential rates of disease come about in local areas. This essay examines the rivalry that has intensified in the 1990s among Canada's three principal film-making provinces: Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. This rivalry is a product of British Columbia's emergence as an audiovisual production centre, 'location-neutral' federal finding policiesto support indigenous film, and television production, and competition to attract foreign service production. This essay posits Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia less as brances of a national film industry, than as competing jurisdictions in a political-economic struggle for jobs and capital investment. The essay proceeds by tracing film policy initiatives by the government of British Columbia throughout the 1990s, which were intended both to diversify an economy heavily dependent on resource extraction and increase British Columbia's share of federal cultural funding. Particular attention is paid to how the policy discourse in British Columbia casts audiovisual production, perceives federal funding instruments and responds to policy initiatives in Quebec and Ontario. The essay concludes by assessing both positive and negative implications of this rivalry for film-making in Canada. While it has permitted regions outside central Canada to participate in film and television production, it has at the same time inhibited collaboration among the provinces, reinforced an industrial perception of cinema and created a dependence on foreign service production.

In this text, the author explores the difficulties of integrating diversity into the pan-Canadian women's movement. She outlines how hard it was for Canadian feminists to understand the 'differend' (unassimilable difference) between themselves and nationalist Quebecoises. Gradually English-Canadian feminists learned that their claim to represent Canadian women was illegitimate because feminist Quebecoises intended to represent themselves. She concludes that it has become normal for the Quebec and English-Canadian movements to disagree on issues, although this disagreement does not preclude ad hoc coalitions. Moreover, women's movements in Canada and Quebec are now jealous of their autonomy and are fragmented, precluding the emergence of a political perspective based on 'unity-in-difference.'
