7. A universal descriptor for two-dimensional carbon nitride-based single-atom electrocatalysts towards the nitrogen reduction reaction.

Abstract

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is widely regarded as one of the most promising ways for green and carbon-free ammonia (NH3) synthesis under mild conditions. Currently, strategies for designing highly efficient, selective, and stable NRR electrocatalysts are desirable. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon nitrides (CNx) with different C/N ratios (e.g., g-C2N, g-CN, g-C3N4, g-C4N3, and g-C9N4) have been widely explored as substrates for single-atom catalysts (SACs) towards the NRR. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the NRR electrocatalytic activity of the single transition metal (TM) atom anchored CNx is systematically investigated and revisited. Based on evaluations of stability and catalytic activity, six promising NRR electrocatalysts are screened out, with considerably low limiting potential (UL). Most importantly, we employed a machine learning (ML)-based screening strategy aimed at predicting efficient NRR electrocatalysts by constructing a universal structure–activity descriptor, which encompasses both the intrinsic properties of the TM atom and the 2D CNx with various C/N ratios. The successful application of the newly proposed descriptor on the new system TM@C8N8 validates its universality. 15. Study of Gravelly Soil Core Material Using a Large-Scale Triaxial Wetting Test.

Abstract

Wetting deformation has a significant impact on dam safety, and is one of the leading causes of the long-term deformation of dams. For dams to operate safely, it is crucial to precisely estimate the extent of wetting deformation using a reasonable calculation model. This study describes the wetting deformation behavior of gravelly soil core material observed at a hydropower station using a large-scale triaxial wetting test, and the process, characteristics, and mechanism of the wetting deformation are analyzed. The results show that the direction of the wetting deformation exhibits different behaviors influenced by the stress levels. Compared with the significant changes in the wetting direction observed under low stress levels, the changes in the wetting direction under high stress levels appears to lag behind those in wetting deformation. The source of wetting deformation is thought to be the weakening of a material when it encounters water. Thus, a new calculation model of the wetting deformation of gravelly soil core material is proposed. In this model, the wetting strain ratio is in an exponential relationship with the stress levels, and the new model is used to simulate the triaxial wetting test on the gravelly soil core material; its validity and practicability are further evaluated, providing a new computational approach for analyzing the wetting deformation behavior of dams. 24. Revolutionizing Soil and Waste Treatment: MoS2Nanosheets Turbocharge Geopolymerization for Eco-Friendly Remediation and Self-cementation of Arsenic-Contaminated Soils and Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ashes

Abstract

In the face of escalating arsenic pollution and the mounting challenge of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ashes, cutting-edge technology has emerged as a game-changer. By harnessing the power of MoS2nanosheets, a revolutionary approach to double-self-cementation has been unlocked, addressing the limitations of previous methods. Through heterogeneous adsorption, MoS2nanosheets bolstered the stability of the matrix, leading to a remarkable surge in compressive strengths and a substantial reduction in leaching toxicities of heavy metals. The compressive strengths of the cemented cubes increased as the dosage of nanosheets increased from 0.3% to 2.4%, with compressive strengths ranging from 24.34 to 34.21MPa. The leaching toxicities of Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and As from the solidified matrix correspondingly decreased to 0.32, 0.21, 0.04, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.53mg/L, respectively. The role played by nanosheets in inhibiting the release and transport of chloride species further underscored their pivotal contribution. Moreover, the study delved into the intricate mechanisms underlying the impact caused by nanoscale materials cementation and geopolymerization systems, shedding light on their dual function as solidification intensifiers and chemical stabilizers. The nanosheet-enhanced double-self process can be appropriately fitted by the JMAK model. The linear nuclei growth of gels controlled the solidification and geopolymerization of the precursor materials and the stabilization of HM contaminants. This groundbreaking research not only elucidates the transformative potential of MoS2nanosheets but also paves the way for a paradigm shift in the treatment of contaminated soils and waste materials.
