Abstract Beam shaping and polarization manipulation are of great importance for the design of microcavity lasers. Recently, topological photonic cavities have emerged as excellent platforms for surface-emitting lasers. In this class of lasers, beam engineering has not thus far been extensively studied. Here, we demonstrate how to achieve an intrinsic lateral shift of the beam emitted by a topological laser. This is achieved by designing a Kekulé-modulated topological bulk cavity, in which the continuous Kekulé modulation partially lifts a set of fourfold-degenerate Dirac cones into two twofold degeneracies. The resulting photonic cavity supports a range of interesting beam emission profiles, including vector beams with polarization winding, and laterally-shifted linearly-polarized Gaussian beams. It is possible to achieve lateral beam shifts in opposite directions and orthogonal polarizations for the degenerate photonic p-/d-orbitals, a feature that may be useful for photonic sensing applications.

Abstract A regrowth method was used to synthesize large-sized colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). With the assistance of doping engineering, the synthesized CQD detectors demonstrate exceptional long-wavelength infrared detection performance, reaching up to 18 μm, significantly extending the spectral response limit for CQD-based infrared detectors. These detectors also achieve a reasonably high detectivity of 6.6 × 108 Jones.

Abstract Structured vortex light with orbital angular momentum (OAM) shows great promise for high-bandwidth optical communications, quantum information and computing, optical tweezers, microscopy, astronomy, among others. Generating, controlling, and detecting of vortex light by all-electrical means is at the heart of next generation nanophotonic platforms. However, on-chip electrical photodetection of structured vortex light remains challenging. Here, we propose an on-chip photodetector based on 2D broadband thermoelectric material (PdSe2) with a well-designed spin-Hall couplers to directly characterize angular momentum modes of vortex structured light. Photothermoelectric responses in the PdSe2 nanoflake, excited by the focusing surface plasmons, show a magnitude proportional to the total angular momentum modes of the infrared vortex beams, thereby achieving direct detection of spin and orbital angular momentum, as well as the chirality and ellipticity of scalar vortex lights. Our works provide a promising strategy for developing on-chip angular momentum optoelectronic devices, which play a key role in the next-generation high-capacity optical communications, quantum information and computing, imaging, and other photonic systems.

Abstract Nonlinear optical activities, especially second harmonic generation (SHG), are key phenomena in inversion-symmetry-broken two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). On the other hand, anisotropic nonlinear optical processes are important for unique applications in nano-nonlinear photonic devices with polarization functions, having become one of focused research topics in the field of nonlinear photonics. However, the strong nonlinearity and strong optical anisotropy do not exist simultaneously in common 2D materials. Here, we demonstrate strong second-order and third-order susceptibilities of 64 pm/V and 6.2×10−19 m2/V2, respectively, in the even-layer PdPSe, which has not been discovered in other common TMDCs (e.g., MoS2). Strikingly, it also simultaneously exhibited strong SHG anisotropy with an anisotropic ratio of ~45, which is the largest reported among all 2D materials to date, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the SHG anisotropy ratio can be harnessed from 0.12 to 45 (375 times) by varying the excitation wavelength due to the dispersion of $${\chi }^{(2)}$$ χ ( 2 ) values. As an illustrative example, we further demonstrate polarized SHG imaging for potential applications in crystal orientation identification and polarization-dependent spatial encoding. These findings in 2D PdPSe are promising for nonlinear nanophotonic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract Van der Waals semiconductors exemplified by two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides have promised next-generation atomically thin optoelectronics. Boosting their interaction with light is vital for practical applications, especially in the quantum regime where ultrastrong coupling is highly demanded but not yet realized. Here we report ultrastrong exciton-plasmon coupling at room temperature in tungsten disulfide (WS2) layers loaded with a random multi-singular plasmonic metasurface deposited on a flexible polymer substrate. Different from seeking perfect metals or high-quality resonators, we create a unique type of metasurface with a dense array of singularities that can support nanometre-sized plasmonic hotspots to which several WS2 excitons coherently interact. The associated normalized coupling strength is 0.12 for monolayer WS2 and can be up to 0.164 for quadrilayers, showcasing the ultrastrong exciton-plasmon coupling that is important for practical optoelectronic devices based on low-dimensional semiconductors.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the main cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. It is reported that the endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in glomerular endothelial cells plays an important role in DN. As a specific form of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, EndMT may involve common regulators of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Fascin has been shown to mediate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. In addition, SirT7 has been confir med to contribute to inflammation in hyperglycemic endothelial cells via the modulation of gene transcription. In this study, we speculate that SirT7 modulates fascin transcription and is thus involved in EndMT in hyperglycemic glomerular endothelial cells. Our data indicate that α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and fascin levels are increased, while CD31 levels are decreased in the kidneys of DN rats. Consistently, our cellular experiments reveal that high glucose treatment elevates fascin levels and induces EndMT in human glomerular endothelial cells (HGECs). Moreover, silencing of fascin inhibits EndMT in hyperglycaemic HGECs. In addition, SirT7 is found to be decreased in hyperglycemic cells and in the kidneys of DN mice. Moreover, the inhibition of SirT7 increases fascin level and mediates EndMT. An increase in SirtT7 expression decreases fascin expression, inhibits EndMT, and improves renal function in hyperglycemic cells and DN mice. SirT7 is found to bind to the promoter region of fascin. In summary, the present study indicates that SirT7 transcribes fascin to contribute to hyperglycemia-induced EndMT in DN patients.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a significant veterinary challenge, often exacerbated by pathogen resistance, hindering effective treatment. Traditional testing methods for primary pathogens – Mycoplasma bovis, Pasteurella multocida, and Mannheimia haemolytica – are notably time-consuming and lack the rapidity required for effective clinical decision-making. This study introduces a TaqMan MGB probe detection chip, utilizing fluorescent quantitative PCR, targeting key BRD pathogens and associated drug-resistant genes and sites. We developed 94 specific probes and primers, embedded into a detection chip, demonstrating notable specificity, repeatability, and sensitivity, reducing testing time to under 1 h. Additionally, we formulated probes to detect mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region, associated with fluoroquinolone resistance in BRD pathogens. The chip exhibited robust sensitivity and specificity, enabling rapid detection of drug-resistant mutations in clinical samples. This methodology significantly expedites the diagnostic process for BRD and sensitive drug screening, presenting a practical advancement in the field.

Abstract The realization of compact and efficient broadband mid-infrared (MIR) lasers has enormous impacts in promoting MIR spectroscopy for various important applications. A number of well-designed waveguide platforms have been demonstrated for MIR supercontinuum and frequency comb generations based on cubic nonlinearities, but unfortunately third-order nonlinear response is inherently weak. Here, we propose and demonstrate for the first time a χ (2) micrometer waveguide platform based on birefringence phase matching for long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) laser generation with a high quantum efficiency. In a ZnGeP2-based waveguide platform, an octave-spanning spectrum covering 5–11 μm is generated through optical parametric generation (OPG). A quantum conversion efficiency of 74% as a new record in LWIR single-pass parametric processes is achieved. The threshold energy is measured as ~616 pJ, reduced by more than 1-order of magnitude as compared to those of MIR OPGs in bulk media. Our prototype micro-waveguide platform could be extended to other χ (2) birefringence crystals and trigger new frontiers of MIR integrated nonlinear photonics.

Continuous variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) removes all known or unknown side-channel attacks on detectors. However, it is difficult to fully implement assumptions in the security demonstration model, which leads to potential security vulnerabilities inevitably existing in the practical system. In this paper, we explore the impact of imbalanced modulation at transmitters on the security of the CV-MDI-QKD system mainly using a coherent state and squeezed state under symmetric and asymmetric distances. Assuming two different modulation topologies of senders, we propose a generalized theoretical scheme and evaluate the key parameter achievable of the protocol with the mechanism of imbalanced modulation. The presented results show that imbalanced modulation can achieve a relatively nonlinearly higher secret key rate and transmission distances than the previous protocol which is the balanced modulation variance used by transmitters. The advantage of imbalanced modulation is demonstrated for the system key parameter estimation using numerical simulation under different situations. In addition, the consequences indicate the importance of imbalanced modulation on the performance of CV-MDI-QKD protocol and provide a theoretical framework for experimental implementation as well as the optimal modulated mode.

Abstract An ultra-low pump intensity and high photon flux have been long pursuits of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids. However, there is lack of a criterion to identify a pristine solid material exhibiting such characteristics. Here, we report systematic investigation into HHG from a cadmium telluride (CdTe) bulk crystal with a flat band dispersion near the Fermi level which leads to a large density of states. The measured pump intensity for the 31st harmonics (229 nm) is only 75 GW/cm2, one order of magnitude lower than that of other pristine crystals including two-dimensional materials reported so far. A comparative measurement shows CdTe has two-to-three orders of magnitude stronger HHG than silicon does, and high HHG yields in the ultraviolet region compared to GaSe. A high photon flux of ~ 6 × 1012 photons/s (5th −8th) with a robust long-time sustainability is obtained. This work offers a route towards compact vacuum ultraviolet laser sources.

Abstract One of the most exciting breakthroughs in physics is the concept of topology that was recently introduced to photonics, achieving robust functionalities, as manifested in the recently demonstrated topological lasers. However, so far almost all attention was focused on lasing from topological edge states. Bulk bands that reflect the topological bulk-edge correspondence have been largely missed. Here, we demonstrate an electrically pumped topological bulk quantum cascade laser (QCL) operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. In addition to the band-inversion induced in-plane reflection due to topological nontrivial cavity surrounded by a trivial domain, we further illustrate the band edges of such topological bulk lasers are recognized as the bound states in the continuum (BICs) due to their nonradiative characteristics and robust topological polarization charges in the momentum space. Therefore, the lasing modes show both in-plane and out-of-plane tight confinements in a compact laser cavity (lateral size ~3λlaser). Experimentally, we realize a miniaturized THz QCL that shows single-mode lasing with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) around 20 dB. We also observe a cylindrical vector beam for the far-field emission, which is evidence for topological bulk BIC lasers. Our demonstration on miniaturization of single-mode beam-engineered THz lasers is promising for many applications including imaging, sensing, and communications.

Abstract Filter-free miniaturized polarization-sensitive photodetectors have important applications in the next-generation on-chip polarimeters. However, their polarization sensitivity is thus far limited by the intrinsic low diattenuation and inefficient photon-to-electron conversion. Here, we implement experimentally a miniaturized detector based on one-dimensional tellurium nanoribbon, which can significantly improve the photothermoelectric responses by translating the polarization-sensitive absorption into a large temperature gradient together with the finite-size effect of a perfect plasmonic absorber. Our devices exhibit a zero-bias responsivity of 410 V/W and an ultrahigh polarization ratio (2.5 × 104), as well as a peak polarization angle sensitivity of 7.10 V/W•degree, which is one order of magnitude higher than those reported in the literature. Full linear polarimetry detection is also achieved with the proposed device in a simple geometrical configuration. Polarization-coded communication and optical strain measurement are demonstrated showing the great potential of the proposed devices. Our work presents a feasible solution for miniaturized room-temperature infrared photodetectors with ultrahigh polarization sensitivity.

Abstract Despite the potential of graphene for building a variety of quantum photonic devices, its centrosymmetric nature forbids the observation of second harmonic generation (SHG) for developing second-order nonlinear devices. To activate SHG in graphene, extensive research efforts have been directed towards disrupting graphene’s inversion symmetry using external stimuli like electric fields. However, these methods fail to engineer graphene’s lattice symmetry, which is the root cause of the forbidden SHG. Here, we harness strain engineering to directly manipulate graphene’s lattice arrangement and induce sublattice polarization to activate SHG. Surprisingly, the SHG signal is boosted 50-fold at low temperatures, which can be explained by resonant transitions between strain-induced pseudo-Landau levels. The second-order susceptibility of strained graphene is found to be larger than that of hexagonal boron nitride with intrinsic broken inversion symmetry. Our demonstration of strong SHG in strained graphene offers promising possibilities for developing high-efficiency nonlinear devices for integrated quantum circuits.

Abstract Infrared machine vision system for object perception and recognition is becoming increasingly important in the Internet of Things era. However, the current system suffers from bulkiness and inefficiency as compared to the human retina with the intelligent and compact neural architecture. Here, we present a retina-inspired mid-infrared (MIR) optoelectronic device based on a two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure for simultaneous data perception and encoding. A single device can perceive the illumination intensity of a MIR stimulus signal, while encoding the intensity into a spike train based on a rate encoding algorithm for subsequent neuromorphic computing with the assistance of an all-optical excitation mechanism, a stochastic near-infrared (NIR) sampling terminal. The device features wide dynamic working range, high encoding precision, and flexible adaption ability to the MIR intensity. Moreover, an inference accuracy more than 96% to MIR MNIST data set encoded by the device is achieved using a trained spiking neural network (SNN).

Fine tuning the optical responses of thin‐film devices is highly attractive for emerging applications, such as optical memories, solar cells, nanophotonics, and photodetectors. Even though thin‐film technology is well established, dynamically switching the optical responses of thin films after fabrication remains challenging because of passive materials and device structures. This work demonstrates an approach for all‐optical switching of structural colors excited by a Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity inside a metal–dielectric–metal (MDM) thin‐film stack. A low‐loss phase‐change material (PCM), that is, antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3), which is embedded in the stack, enables efficient FP cavity resonance in the visible spectrum. 1) Color reflectivity of >60%; 2) multistructural colors using a single MDM cavity; 3) a wide dynamic range of colors of up to ≈220 nm; and 4) a gamut coverage of more than 80% of standard RGB (sRGB) are achieved. The all‐optical switching is realized via the crystallization and reamorphization of Sb2S3 using continuous‐wave and pulsed lasers, respectively. The findings provide a framework for the cost‐effective realization of dynamically responsive thin‐film‐based nanophotonic devices.

Abstract Platinum diselenide (PtSe2) is a promising two‐dimensional (2D) material for the terahertz (THz) range as, unlike other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), its bandgap can be uniquely tuned from a semiconductor in the near‐infrared to a semimetal with the number of atomic layers. This gives the material unique THz photonic properties that can be layer‐engineered. Here, we demonstrate that a controlled THz nonlinearity—tuned from monolayer to bulk PtSe2—can be realized in wafer size polycrystalline PtSe2 through the generation of ultrafast photocurrents and the engineering of the bandstructure valleys. This is combined with the PtSe2 layer interaction with the substrate for a broken material centrosymmetry, permitting a second order nonlinearity. Further, we show layer dependent circular dichroism, where the sign of the ultrafast currents and hence the phase of the emitted THz pulse can be controlled through the excitation of different bandstructure valleys. In particular, we show that a semimetal has a strong dichroism that is absent in the monolayer and few layer semiconducting limit. The microscopic origins of this TMD bandstructure engineering are highlighted through detailed DFT simulations, and shows the circular dichroism can be controlled when PtSe2 becomes a semimetal and when the K‐valleys can be excited. As well as showing that PtSe2 is a promising material for THz generation through layer controlled optical nonlinearities, this work opens up a new class of circular dichroism materials beyond the monolayer limit that has been the case of traditional TMDs, and impacting a range of domains from THz valleytronics, THz spintronics to harmonic generation.

THz integrate light sources represent an important building blocks for various applications. Here the authors report an electrically driven topological laser based on photonic Majorana zero mode that can convert electricity directly into THz single-mode laser with topologically nontrivial beams.

For the trapped pre-cooled atoms in an optical dipole trap (ODT), the magic-wavelength ODT can eliminate the differential light shift of the transition between two atomic states, so that the transition frequency between the two states is the same as that of atoms in the free space, which is of great significance for improving the experimental repetition rate and reducing the atomic decoherence in the fields of cold atom physics, quantum optics, and precision measurement. Here we calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of cesium 6S ground state and 7P excited state by using the multi-level model for the ODT with laser wavelength from 1200 to 2000 nm. The magic wavelengths of ODT are obtained for the linearly and circularly polarized laser beams at the intersection of dynamic polarizabilities of two atomic states. Furthermore, we analyze the robustness of the magic trapping conditions and the feasibility of the experimental operation near the telecom C-band wavelength.

Mid-infrared polarization-sensitive photodetectors are desired for several applications, such as chemical analysis and biomedical diagnosis. Here, the authors report on-chip polarimeters based on the combination of plasmonic chiral metamaterials and 2D thermoelectric materials, showing tunable full-Stokes detection of linearly and circularly polarized light at room temperature.

Miniaturized infrared spectrometers are required for imaging and remote sensing applications, but they are usually characterized by a cm-scale footprint. Here, the authors report the realization of near-infrared spectrometers based on Au-atom-intercalated ReS2/WSe2 heterostructures with an active footprint < 10 μm and electrically tunable photoresponse.

BackgroundPost-stroke depression (PSD) , a common complication in stroke patients, may increase the disability and mortality, however, its pathogenesis is unknown yet.ObjectiveTo observe the white matter fiber bundle alterations by diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) , and to explore its correlation with depression in patients with PSD.MethodsParticipants were selected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University from September 2019 to September 2020, involving 40 inpatients with first-episode ischemic stroke (20 were found with PSD, and 20 without) , and 20 physical examinees as healthy controls. DTT was performed in all participants, fractional anisotropy (FA) and number of fiber bundles in regions of interest (ROIs) were compared across PSD and non-PSD inpatients and healthy controls. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to analyze the correlations of FA and number of fiber bundles on the side of stroke in the ROIs with 24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-24) in PDS inpatients.ResultsIn PSD inpatients, the FA of inferior fronto-occipital fascicles, corticospinal tract, frontopontine tract, cingulum bundle and uncinate fasciculus on the side of the stroke was significantly lower than those on the contralateral side (P

We successfully demonstrate the generation of an all-solid-state deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser at 206 nm through the fifth (4 + 1)-harmonic generation using a 197-W, 10-kHz, 1.2-ps, 1,030-nm Yb:YAG laser. The DUV laser delivers 180 μJ–582 fs pulses with a peak power of 291 MW, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest peak power at 206 nm ever produced by all-solid-state kHz DUV laser sources driven at 1 μm wavelength. This corresponds to one order of magnitude improvement from early state-of-the-art record reported in the literature.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN), which is a common microvascular complication with a high incidence in diabetic patients, greatly increases the mortality of patients. With further study on DN, it is found that epigenetics plays a crucial role in the pathophysiological process of DN. Epigenetics has an important impact on the development of DN through a variety of mechanisms, and promotes the generation and maintenance of metabolic memory, thus ultimately leading to a poor prognosis. In this review we discuss the methylation of DNA, modification of histone, and regulation of non-coding RNA involved in the progress of cell dysfunction, inflammation and fibrosis in the kidney, which ultimately lead to the deterioration of DN.

Abstract The ability to precisely control moiré patterns in two-dimensional materials has enabled the realization of unprecedented physical phenomena including Mott insulators, unconventional superconductivity, and quantum emission. Along with the twist angle, the application of independent strain in each layer of stacked two-dimensional materials—termed heterostrain—has become a powerful means to manipulate the moiré potential landscapes. Recent experimental studies have demonstrated the possibility of continuously tuning the twist angle and the resulting physical properties. However, the dynamic control of heterostrain that allows the on-demand manipulation of moiré superlattices has yet to be experimentally realized. Here, by harnessing the weak interlayer van der Waals bonding in twisted bilayer graphene devices, we demonstrate the realization of dynamically tunable heterostrain of up to 1.3%. Polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of substantial heterostrain by presenting triple G peaks arising from the independently strained graphene layers. Theoretical calculations revealed that the distorted moiré patterns via heterostrain can significantly alter the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene, allowing the emergence of multiple absorption peaks ranging from near-infrared to visible spectral ranges. Our experimental demonstration presents a new degree of freedom towards the dynamic modulation of moiré superlattices, holding the promise to unveil unprecedented physics and applications of stacked two-dimensional materials.

The effect of strain-induced pseudo-magnetic fields on the optical properties of graphene has not been experimentally explored yet. Here, pseudo-magnetic fields reaching values of 100 T are shown to increase by more than an order of magnitude the relaxation lifetime of hot carriers in periodically strained graphene.

Abstract Preoperative prediction of tumor recurrence after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is helpful for clinical decision-making before treatment. A total of 162 patients with HCC of 3 cm or less who were completely ablated by percutaneous RFA were divided into a derivation cohort (n = 108) and a validation cohort (n = 54). Based on X-Tiles software, Kaplan–Meier curve analysis and COX multivariate analysis to obtain valuable predictive indicators, a clinical scoring system for predicting tumor recurrence was established. In the verall cohort, derivation cohort and validation cohort, we found circulating tumor cells (CTC) > 2/3.2 mL, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) > 20 ng/mL, and des-γ-carboxyprothrombin (DCP) > 40 mAU/mL, maximum tumor diameter > 20 mm, and the number of multiple tumors (≥ 2) are independent risk factors affecting tumor recurrence. Each independent risk factor was assigned a score of 1 to construct a predictive clinical scoring system, and X-Tiles software was used to divide the clinical score into a low-risk group (0 score–1 score), a medium-risk group (2 scores–3 scores), and a high-risk group (4 scores–5 scores). The cumulative tumor recurrence rates of patients in the low-risk group, middle-risk group, and high-risk group in 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years were 19.4%/27.5%/30.9%, 37.0%/63.2%/79.9% and 68.2%/100%/100%, respectively (Low-risk group vs medium-risk group: P

We study one-dimensional lattices with imaginary-valued Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) potentials. Such lattices can host edge states with purely imaginary eigenenergies, which differ from the edge states of the Hermitian AAH model and are stabilized by a non-Hermitian particle-hole symmetry. The edge states arise when the period of the imaginary potential is a multiple of four lattice constants. They are topological in origin, and can manifest on domain walls between lattices with different modulation periods and phases, as predicted by a bulk polarization invariant. Interestingly, the edge states persist and remain localized even if the gap in the real spectrum closes. These features can be used in laser arrays to select topological lasing modes under spatially extended pumping.

In this work we report on an innovative sensor box employing two acoustic detection modules connected in series for quartz-enhanced photoacoustic multi-gas detection. One detection module is coupled with an internal distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) emitting at ∼7.719 µm for methane (CH4) sensing, while the second module has been designed to be coupled with an external laser source targeting the absorption features of a specific gas molecule Mx in the infrared spectral range. The sensor box can thus be employed for any application, depending on the CH4/Mx gas combination to be detected. The ∼7.719 µm DFB-QCL also allowed water vapor monitoring. To demonstrate the sensor versatility, we report on the QEPAS-box environmental monitoring application by simultaneously detecting in air methane, which is a greenhouse gas, nitric oxide (NO), an ozone depleting substance, and water vapor. Sensitivity levels of 4.30 mV ppm−1 and 17.51 mV ppm−1 and minimum detection limits of 48 ppb and 11 ppb for methane and nitric oxide detection were achieved, respectively. The sensor box operation was tested by analysing ambient air. Average concentrations of ∼1.73 ppm of CH4, ∼0.134 ppm of NO and 1.8% of H2O were measured.

The ray dynamics of optical cavities exhibits bifurcation points: special geometries at which ray trajectories switch abruptly between stable and unstable. A prominent example is the Fabry–Perot cavity with two planar mirrors, which is widely employed for broad-area semiconductor lasers. Such cavities support lasing in a relatively small number of transverse modes, and the laser is highly susceptible to filamentation and irregular pulsations. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that a slight deviation from this bifurcation point (planar cavity) dramatically changes the laser performance. In a near-planar cavity with two concave mirrors, the number of transverse lasing modes increases drastically. While the spatial coherence of the laser emission is reduced, the divergence angle of the output beam remains relatively narrow. Moreover, the spatiotemporal lasing dynamics becomes significantly more stable compared to that in a Fabry–Perot cavity. Our near-planar broad-area semiconductor laser has higher brightness, better directionality, and hence allows shorter integration times than an incandescent lamp while featuring sufficiently low speckle contrast at the same time, making it a vastly superior light source for speckle-free imaging. Furthermore, our method of controlling spatiotemporal dynamics with extreme sensitivity near a bifurcation point may be applied to other types of high-power lasers and nonlinear dynamic systems.

Introduction: Microvascular invasion (MVI) of is generally considered to be an important prognostic factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after operation, An accurate prediction of MVI before operation is helpful for clinical decision-making before operation. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of 227 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma patients after hepatectomy has been confirmed the pathological result whether there was MVI, and has been determined the independent risk factors of MVI. Based on these independent risk factors, we constructed a clinical scoring risk model for predicting MVI. Results: Among the 227 patients with HCC, 74 (34.6%) were MVI positive. Abstract Atom-thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as fascinating materials and key structures for electrocatalysis. So far, their edges, dopant heteroatoms and defects have been intensively explored as active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to split water. However, grain boundaries (GBs), a key type of defects in TMDs, have been overlooked due to their low density and large structural variations. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of wafer-size atom-thin TMD films with an ultra-high-density of GBs, up to ~1012 cm−2. We propose a climb and drive 0D/2D interaction to explain the underlying growth mechanism. The electrocatalytic activity of the nanograin film is comprehensively examined by micro-electrochemical measurements, showing an excellent hydrogen-evolution performance (onset potential: −25 mV and Tafel slope: 54 mV dec−1), thus indicating an intrinsically high activation of the TMD GBs.

The analysis of infrared spectroscopy of substances is a non-invasive measurement technique that can be used in analytics. Although the main objective of this study is to provide a review of machine learning (ML) algorithms that have been reported for analyzing near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy from traditional machine learning methods to deep network architectures, we also provide different NIR measurement modes, instruments, signal preprocessing methods, etc. Firstly, four different measurement modes available in NIR are reviewed, different types of NIR instruments are compared, and a summary of NIR data analysis methods is provided. Secondly, the public NIR spectroscopy datasets are briefly discussed, with links provided. Thirdly, the widely used data preprocessing and feature selection algorithms that have been reported for NIR spectroscopy are presented. Then, the majority of the traditional machine learning methods and deep network architectures that are commonly employed are covered. Finally, we conclude that developing the integration of a variety of machine learning algorithms in an efficient and lightweight manner is a significant future research direction.

To describe and analyze the unstable periodic orbits of the Rucklidge system, a so-called symbolic encoding method is introduced, which has been proven to be an efficient tool to explore the topological properties concealed in these periodic orbits. In this work, the unstable periodic orbits up to a certain topological length in the Rucklidge system are systematically investigated via a proposed variational method. The dynamics in the Rucklidge system are explored by using phase portrait analysis, Lyapunov exponents, and Poincaré first return maps. Symbolic encodings of the periodic orbits with two and four letters based on the trajectory topology in the phase space are implemented under two sets of parameter values. Meanwhile, the bifurcations of the periodic orbits are explored, significantly improving the understanding of the dynamics of the Rucklidge system. The multiple-letter symbolic encoding method could also be applicable to other nonlinear dynamical systems.
