Abstract Concentrated Growth Factor (CGF) is a highly effective biomaterial known for its ability to promote tissue regeneration. While it’s been studied extensively in intraoral procedures and bone grafting, its benefits in maxillary sinus lifting lack substantial evidence. This review aimed to evaluate CGF’s effectiveness in maxillary sinus augmentation, focusing on clinical, radiographic, and histological outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases using specific mesh terms and keywords and adhered to PRISMA guidelines. Studies up to March 2024 involving transcrestal or lateral maxillary sinus floor elevation with CGF, either alone or in combination with grafting materials, were included. Out of 783 publications, 13 studies met the eligibility criteria. The review assessed CGF’s role in minimizing postoperative complications, enhancing new bone formation, and improving implant survival. Despite data variability among studies, the majority reported that CGF positively influenced maxillary sinus augmentation outcomes. While more robust randomized clinical trials are required to draw definitive conclusions, initial results are promising, and the findings suggest that CGF utilization in maxillary sinus augmentation seems to enhance clinical outcomes by promoting vascularization and regeneration at the surgical sites and improving both the quality and quantity of newly formed sinus bone. Furthermore, it exhibits potential for improving postoperative sequelae and achieving high implant survival rates.

Abstract Aiming at the problem of "crystallization" on the surface of Yuan blue and white ceramics, which causes reflections and loss of image texture, an image processing method is proposed to repair the image texture information. A multi-scale Retinex pre-processing method is proposed to enhance the contrast between the pattern and the background. A color factor is introduced to prevent color distortion. A weighted average function is constructed to enhance image details and improve texture information. The Yuan blue and white pattern can be effectively segmented from the background using a combination of multi-peak thresholding for segmentation and other techniques. The experimental results demonstrate that, in comparison to other algorithms, the multi-scale Retinex and histogram multi-peak threshold coupled segmentation method proposed in this paper exhibits the highest F1-score of 0.03067 and an accuracy of 92.67% in cross-evaluation with other algorithms. This indicates that the overall performance of the algorithm is the best. The proposed method has the potential to inform the protection of cultural relics.

Rational nitrogen (N) application can enhance yield and improve grain eating quality in rice. However, excessive N input can deteriorate grain eating quality and aggravate environmental pollution, while reduced N application (RN) decreases rice yield. Reduced N application with dense planting (RNDP) is recommended for maintaining rice yield and improving N use efficiency. However, the effects of RNDP on the rice grain eating quality and starch structure and properties remain unclear. A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of RNDP on the rice yield, grain eating quality, and starch structure and properties. Compared to conventional N treatment, RN decreased significantly the rice yield, while RNDP achieved a comparable grain yield. Both the RN and RNDP treatments improved significantly the rice eating quality. The high eating quality of RNDP was attributed to increased gel consistency, pasting viscosity, and stickiness after cooking as well as decreased protein content. A further analysis of starch structure and properties revealed that RNDP decreased the relative crystallinity, lamellar intensity, gelatinization enthalpy, and retrogradation enthalpy of starch. Therefore, RNDP achieved a stable rice yield and enhanced rice eating quality. These findings provide valuable insights into obtaining optimal quality and consistent yield in rice production under reduced N conditions.

Nitrogen (N) rate reduction and simplified fertilization can mitigate environmental impacts and reduce the involvement of manual labor in rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Controlled-release urea (CRU) has been recommended as an effective alternative technique to conventional urea fertilization, and it can improve rice yield and N use efficiency (NUE) and reduce labor costs. However, the information on the effects of one-time fertilization with CRU on maintaining yield and improving NUE under reduced chemical N conditions is limited. In this study, controlled-release bulk blending fertilizer (CRF), consisting of CRU with release periods of 40 and 100 days, mixed with compound fertilizer, was applied as basal fertilizer. Increased ~20% plant density (ID) and rapeseed cake fertilizer (RC, increase 20% organic N) were combined with CRF, respectively. The N treatments with 20% chemical N reduction were as follows: reduced N fertilizer (RNF), CRF, CRF+ID, and CRF+RC. In addition, a conventional split fertilizer application with 300 kg ha-1 N was applied as the control (CK). Rice yield and its components, dry matter accumulation, N uptake, and NUE were investigated to evaluate whether one-time N fertilization realized stable yield and high NUE under reduced 20% chemical N conditions. Compared with CK, the CRF+RC treatment exhibited a comparable grain yield, while the other reduced N treatments (RNF, CRF, and CRF+ID) had a lower grain yield. Moreover, CRF+ID exhibited a higher rice grain yield than RNF or CRF under the same N level. Irrespective of exogenous organic N, CRF+RC exhibited significantly higher NUE than CK. The CRF+ID treatment showed a significantly higher N partial factor productivity (PFN) than CK but comparable N agronomic efficiency (NAE) and N recovery efficiency (NRE). Therefore, a one-time fertilizer application of CRF+RC maintained grain yield and improved the NUE while reducing the N rate and fertilization times, demonstrating its potential application in rice production.

Elevated ripening temperature (ET) impacts rice grain quality. In this study, two rice varieties were investigated to evaluate the characterization of starch fine structure and grain eating quality under ET conditions. Rice exposure to ET increased the proportion of large-sized granules and starch granule average size, regardless of grain position. Compared to normal temperature (NT), the amylose content (AM) in the upper grain position (UP) exhibited a significant increase under ET, whereas the contrary results showed a decrease in the lower grain position (LP), and the proportion of shorter amylopectin chains increased under ET in UP or LP, whereas the proportion of long amylopectin chains decreased, resulting in a higher starch gelatinization temperature and enthalpy under ET. For grain position, compared to LP, UP had higher AM and a higher proportion of long amylopectin chains, leading to higher gelatinization enthalpy under ET. For eating quality, we found that ET deteriorated the eating quality of rice compared to NT, and UP had higher eating quality than LP under NT; however, there was a comparable eating quality between UP and LP under ET. Hence, elevated grain filling temperature mitigated the eating quality deterioration of rice grain in LP due to the lower AM and gelatinization enthalpy and the higher proportion of shorter amylopectin chains.

Abstract Background Delay in care seeking is one of the causes for neonatal death. Mothers’ knowledge of neonatal danger signs is imperative to promote early recognition of neonatal illness and reduce the delay in care seeking. Currently, no study has been conducted on the knowledge about neonatal danger signs in China, especially in economically less developed areas. This study aimed to examine the knowledge of neonatal danger signs and risk factors of poor knowledge among mothers in a rural county of southwest of China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Wenshan, a rural county of southwest of China. A total of 112 respondents were included from November 2020 to February 2021 among women who had babies aged 0–12 months and brought their babies to health care centers for immunization within the study period. A questionnaire with 18-item key neonatal danger signs was used to measure their knowledge about these signs. Mothers who scored above average were considered to have relatively good knowledge whereas those who scored below average were considered to have relatively poor knowledge. Independent predictors of mothers’ knowledge were identified by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results The mean knowledge score of neonatal danger signs of mothers was 18.1 (SD = 8.6). Fifty-eight percentage of mothers (65/112) had poor knowledge of neonatal danger signs. Danger signs of “bluish or pale skin”, “chest indrawing”, and “convulsion” were mostly recognized, whereas danger signs of “not able to feed since birth, or stopped feeding well”, “excessive crying” and “eyes draining pus” were recognized poorly. Less than four antenatal visits [AOR = 4.348], younger than 25 years old [AOR = 3.839], ethnic minority [AOR = 3.956] and family financial difficulty [AOR = 4.944] were significant indicators of relatively poor knowledge. Conclusions Mothers’ knowledge about neonatal danger signs in rural China is poor even though the coverage of maternal and child health care services are expanded. Existing efforts should be enhanced for antenatal care visits, avoiding early marriage as well as early childbearing. More attention should be paid to low-income ethnic minority mothers. Educating and training should be strengthened for danger signs, especially those who are predicted to have insufficient knowledge.

Objectives To propose an updated definition of proximal tibia and fibula fracture (PTFF) and establish a three‐dimensional (3D) structure‐based classification of PTFF. Methods In total, 1358 adult patients (837 males and 521 females; 43.61 ± 15.13 years， 1364 affected knees) who were diagnosed with PTFF at the departments of orthopaedic surgery of four hospitals from January 2010 to December 2019 were enrolled. The new classification of PTFF, termed Wu classification, included three parts: classification of columns in the horizontal plane, regions in the frontal plane, and segments in the sagittal plane. All PTFFs were classified according to Schatzker, Luo, and Wu classification systems. Additionally, the incidence and characteristics of PTFFs were analyzed. Results The major internal structural fractures of PTFF were tibial plateau fracture (TPF) only (725, 53.15%), TPF and proximal fibular fracture (274, 20.09%), and isolated avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) (189, 13.86%). Approximately a quarter of PTFF cases could not be classified using Schatzker or Luo classifications, but all PTFF cases could be classified using Wu classification. The most frequent PTFFs included all four columns in region IV, segment 2 (235, 17.23%); the posterolateral and posteromedial columns in region II, segment 2 (191, 14.00%); and the lateral and posterolateral columns in region IV, segment 2 (136, 9.97%). Isolated avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was categorized as three injury types, most of which involved the lateral and medial columns in region II, segment 1 (40/63, 64%). More than 97% of cases of isolated fractures of the PCL involved the posterolateral and posteromedial columns in region II, segment 2. The most frequent combined avulsion fracture of the ACL and PCL included all four columns in region II, segment 2 (18/24, 75%). All of the isolated avulsion fractures of the ACL were located in segment 1, and all those of the PCL in segment 2. The most common type of isolated proximal fibular fracture involved the posterolateral column in region III, segment 2 (23/26, 88%). The most frequent combined TPF and proximal fibular fracture involved all four columns in region IV, segment 2 (107/274, 39.05%). Conclusions All cases of PTFF could be classified by the new 3D Wu classification which should be beneficial for clinical diagnosis, guidance of treatment, statistical analysis, academic communication, and prognosis, and the most frequent PTFF involved all four columns in region IV, segment 2.

Abstract Most chronic kidney disease inevitably progress to renal fibrosis. Tubular epithelial- to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is recognized to play major roles in renal fibrosis. Oxymatrine (OM) is a major alkaloid component found in a Chinese herb Sophora roots and has many effects. The aim is to investigate the effect of OM on renal tubular EMT and elucidate its mechanism. Mice underwent unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) followed by intraperitoneal injection of OM (120 mg/kg) or control vehicle. Human kidney proximal tubular cell line (HK-2) was used and EMT was induced with 5 ng/mL of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). In vivo, renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis was induced and E-cadherin was down-regulated, while the expressions of fibronectin (FN), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), TGF-β1 and its type I receptor (TGF-βRI) were up-regulated in UUO mice. In contrast, OM significantly ameliorated renal fibrotic lesions and attenuated the expressions of FN, α-SMA, TGF-β1 and TGF-βRI, but increased E-cadherin in the obstructed kidneys. In vitro, OM abolished TGF-β1-mediated E-cadherin suppression and FN, α-SMA and TGF-βRI induction in HK-2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. These observations strongly suggest that the renal protective effects of OM could be mediated by prevention of EMT and manifested as suppression of TGF-β1 and TGF-βRI expressions.

Objective. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is considered to be essential during the tooth development. Stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) are responsible for dentine formation. However, the interaction between PTH and SCAPs remains unclear. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of PTH on odonto/osteogenic differentiation capacity of SCAPs and elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms. Materials and Methods. Here, SCAPs were isolated and identified in vitro. Effects of PTH on the proliferation of SCAPs were determined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), flow cytometry (FCM), and EdU. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, alizarin red staining, Western blot, and RT-PCR were carried out to detect the odonto/osteogenic differentiation of PTH-treated SCAPs as well as the participation of the MAPK signaling pathway. Results. An ALP activity assay determined that 10-8 mol/L PTH was the optimal concentration for the induction of SCAPs with no significant influence on the proliferation of SCAPs as indicated by CCK-8, FCM, and EdU. The expression of odonto/osteogenic markers was significantly upregulated in mRNA levels and protein levels. Moreover, intermittent treatment of PTH also increased phosphorylation of JNK and P38, and the differentiation was suppressed following the inhibition of JNK and P38 MAPK pathways. Conclusion. PTH can regulate the odonto/osteogenic differentiation of SCAPs via JNK and P38 MAPK pathways.

The PI3K-AKT pathway is known to regulate cytokines in dust mite-induced pediatric asthma. However, the underlying molecular steps involved are not clear. In order to clarify further the molecular steps, this study investigated the expression of certain genes and the involvement of miRNAs in the PI3K-AKT pathway, which might affect the resultant cytokine-secretion. in-vivo and in-vitro ELISA, qRT-PCR and microarrays analyses were used in this study. A down-expression of miRNA-27b-3p in dust mite induced asthma group (group D) was found by microarray analysis. This was confirmed by qRT-PCR that found the miRNA-27b-3p transcripts that regulated the expression of SYK and EGFR were also significantly decreased (p < 0.01) in group D. The transcript levels of the SYK and PI3K genes were higher, while those of EGFR were lower in the former group. Meanwhile, we found significant differences in plasma concentrations of some cytokines between the dust mite-induced asthma subjects and the healthy controls. On the other hand, this correlated with the finding that the transcripts of SYK and its downstream PI3K were decreased in HBE transfected with miRNA-27b-3p, but were increased in HBE transfected with the inhibitor in vitro. Our results indicate that the differential expression of the miRNAs in dust mite-induced pediatric asthma may regulate their target gene SYK and may have an impact on the PI3K-AKT pathway associated with the production of cytokines. These findings should add new insight into the pathogenesis of pediatric asthma.

Ethnopoetics involves in the conducting of translation experiments on oral poems of native ethnic groups, converting its relevant oral texts into written forms. The theory of ethnographic poetry begins in the 1970s and was translated and introduced to China in the early 21st century. However, most ethnic minorities in China do not have textual writings. Their oral creations from primitive society to modern society such as epics, long poems, narrative poems, ballads, and folk songs are mostly in form of oral poetry. The collection and translation of oral poems of ethnic minorities in China began in the late 1950s, that demarcated the beginning of ethnopoetics in China. In this article, the reasons behind the collection and translation of Chinese ethnic minority oral poems will be analysed. The restoration process of ethnopoetics and the connections between the collections and the translations, and the issues on whether translation is consistent to Chinese ethnic minority oral poems will also be further elaborated. The history of Chinese ethnic minorities oral poetry traces back to a long history and consists of a variety of themes and contents. Therefore, the restoration process of ethnopoetic research on the relationship between oral culture and written culture not only have gained the attention from the Chinese academic community, but also shown strong interests by the Western academic research community and worldwide.

Background: Independent factors are needed to supplement vesical imaging‐reporting and data system (VI‐RADS) to improve its ability to identify muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Purpose: To assess the correlation between MIBC and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) ratio, VI‐RADS, and other factors (such as tumor location). Study Type: Retrospective. Population: Sixty‐eight patients (50 males and 18 females; age: 70.1 ± 9.5 years) with bladder urothelial carcinoma. Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5 T, conventional diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI), and DKI (single shot echo‐planar sequence). Assessment: Three radiologists independently measured the diffusion parameters of each bladder cancer (BCa) and obturator internus, including the mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCmean), mean kurtosis (MK), and mean diffusion (MD). And the ratio of diffusion parameters between BCa and obturator internus was calculated (diffusion parameter ratio = bladder cancer:obturator internus). Based on the VI‐RADS, the target lesions were independently scored. Furthermore, the actual tumor‐wall contact length (ACTCL) and absolute tumor‐wall contact length (ABTCL) were measured. Statistical Tests: Multicollinearity among independent variables was evaluated using the variance inflation factor (VIF). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent risk factors of MIBC. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the efficacy of each variable in detecting MIBC. The DeLong test was used to compare the area under the curve (AUC). A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: MKratio (median: 0.62) and VI‐RADS were independent risk factors for MIBC. AUCs for MKratio, VI‐RADS, and MKratio combined with VI‐RADS in assessing MIBC were 0.895, 0.871, and 0.973, respectively. MKratio combined with VI‐RADS was more effective in diagnosing MIBC than VI‐RADS alone. Data Conclusions: MKratio has potential to assist the assessment of MIBC. Cancer is a heavy human burden worldwide, with high morbidity and mortality. Identification of novel cancer diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers is important for developing cancer treatment strategies and reducing mortality. Transcription factors, including SRY associated high mobility group box (SOX) proteins, are thought to be involved in the regulation of specific biological processes. There is growing evidence that SOX transcription factors play an important role in cancer progression, including tumorigenesis, changes in the tumor microenvironment, and metastasis. SOX5 is a member of SOX Group D of Sox family. SOX5 is expressed in various tissues of human body and participates in various physiological and pathological processes and various cellular processes. However, the abnormal expression of SOX5 is associated with cancer of various systems, and the abnormal expression of SOX5 acts as a tumor promoter to promote cancer cell viability, proliferation, invasion, migration and EMT through multiple mechanisms. In addition, the expression pattern of SOX5 is closely related to cancer type, stage and adverse clinical outcome. Therefore, SOX5 is considered as a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. In this review, the expression of SOX5 in various human cancers, the mechanism of action and potential clinical significance of SOX5 in tumor, and the therapeutic significance of Sox5 targeting in cancer were reviewed. ObjectivesCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is sweeping the globe and has resulted in infections in millions of people. Patients with COVID-19 face a high fatality risk once symptoms worsen; therefore, early identification of severely ill patients can enable early intervention, prevent disease progression, and help reduce mortality. This study aims to develop an artificial intelligence-assisted tool using computed tomography (CT) imaging to predict disease severity and further estimate the risk of developing severe disease in patients suffering from COVID-19.Materials and MethodsInitial CT images of 408 confirmed COVID-19 patients were retrospectively collected between January 1, 2020 and March 18, 2020 from hospitals in Honghu and Nanchang. The data of 303 patients in the People’s Hospital of Honghu were assigned as the training data, and those of 105 patients in The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were assigned as the test dataset. A deep learning based-model using multiple instance learning and residual convolutional neural network (ResNet34) was developed and validated. The discrimination ability and prediction accuracy of the model were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve and confusion matrix, respectively.ResultsThe deep learning-based model had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.987 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.968–1.00) and an accuracy of 97.4% in the training set, whereas it had an AUC of 0.892 (0.828–0.955) and an accuracy of 81.9% in the test set. In the subgroup analysis of patients who had non-severe COVID-19 on admission, the model achieved AUCs of 0.955 (0.884–1.00) and 0.923 (0.864–0.983) and accuracies of 97.0 and 81.6% in the Honghu and Nanchang subgroups, respectively.ConclusionOur deep learning-based model can accurately predict disease severity as well as disease progression in COVID-19 patients using CT imaging, offering promise for guiding clinical treatment.

Background: The preoperative diagnosis of peritoneal metastasis (PM) in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is challenging and can impact clinical decision‐making. Purpose: To investigate the performance of T2‐weighted (T2W) MRI‐based deep learning (DL) and radiomics methods for PM evaluation in EOC patients. Study Type: Retrospective. Population: Four hundred seventy‐nine patients from five centers, including one training set (N = 297 [mean, 54.87 years]), one internal validation set (N = 75 [mean, 56.67 years]), and two external validation sets (N = 53 [mean, 55.58 years] and N = 54 [mean, 58.22 years]). Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5 or 3 T/fat‐suppression T2W fast or turbo spin‐echo sequence. Assessment: ResNet‐50 was used as the architecture of DL. The largest orthogonal slices of the tumor area, radiomics features, and clinical characteristics were used to construct the DL, radiomics, and clinical models, respectively. The three models were combined using decision‐level fusion to create an ensemble model. Diagnostic performances of radiologists and radiology residents with and without model assistance were evaluated. Statistical Tests: Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the performances of models. The McNemar test was used to compare sensitivity and specificity. A two‐tailed P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The ensemble model had the best AUCs, outperforming the DL model (0.844 vs. 0.743, internal validation set; 0.859 vs. 0.737, external validation set I) and clinical model (0.872 vs. 0.730, external validation set II). After model assistance, all readers had significantly improved sensitivity, especially for those with less experience (junior radiologist1, from 0.639 to 0.820; junior radiologist2, from 0.689 to 0.803; resident1, from 0.623 to 0.803; resident2, from 0.541 to 0.738). One resident also had significantly improved specificity (from 0.633 to 0.789). Data Conclusions: T2W MRI‐based DL and radiomics approaches have the potential to preoperatively predict PM in EOC patients and assist in clinical decision‐making. In this work, a series of novel compounds Spartinin C1-C24 were screened, synthesised and evaluated for inhibiting xanthine oxidase thus lowering serum uric acid level. The backbones were derived from the components of coastal marine source Spartina alterniflora and marketed drugs. The top hits Spartinin C10 & C22 suggested high inhibition percentages (78.54 and 93.74) at 10 μM dosage, which were higher than the positive control Allopurinol. They were low cytotoxic onto human normal hepatocyte cells. Treatment with Spartinin C10 could lower the serum uric acid level to 440.0 μM in the hyperuricemic model mice (723.0 μM), comparable with Allopurinol (325.8 μM). Spartinin C10 was more appreciated than Allopurinol on other serum indexes. The preliminary pharmacokinetics evaluation indicated that the rapid absorption, metabolism and elimination of Spartinin C10 should be further improved.
