Joel Habener, Svetlana Mojsov, and Lotte Bjerre Knudsen have been awarded the 2024 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for their work on GLP-1 receptor agonists and their applications to obesity. GLP-1 receptor agonists have revolutionized the treatment of metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, and have shown potential for treating other disorders as well. These drugs have been studied in cardiovascular trials and have shown significant reductions in cardiovascular outcomes, as well as beneficial effects on blood pressure, lipoproteins, and inflammation. However, they do come with side effects such as nausea, vomiting, pancreatitis, and injection site reactions. Longer-acting forms of GLP-1 receptor agonists have been developed to improve convenience for patients. [Extracted from the article]
