This paper investigates how investments in automation affect the gender pay gap. The evidence of the effects of automation on the labor market is growing; however, little is known about the implications of automation for the gender pay gap. The data used in this paper are from a matched employer–employee dataset incorporating detailed information on firms, their imports, and employee–level data for Estonian manufacturing and service employers for the period of 2006–2018. Through the use of the imports of automation goods as a proxy for the introduction of automation at the firm level, this paper estimates the effect of automation using simple Mincerian wage equations. The causality of the effect is further validated using propensity score matching (PSM). We find that introducing automation enlarges the gender pay gap, and PSM confirms that this also has a higher causal effect on the wages of male employees than female employees. The results imply that a higher representation of women in higher-paid positions does not guarantee a reduction in the gender pay gap in the presence of automation, and appropriate measures in education and retraining are needed to tackle the effect of automation on gender inequality. Despite the prevalence of teams in research, there is a lack of a good understanding of how their size and diversity affects their performance. We develop a theoretical framework that distinguishes two dimensions of research performance for an academic paper: impact (i.e., subsequent citations) and prestige (i.e., ranking of the journal where research is published). We propose that, while larger teams will enhance linearly the impact of research, they will affect its prestige in a nonlinear fashion. We further contend that these effects will be moderated by knowledge and international diversity of the teams. We test these hypotheses using bibliometric data between 1990 and 2020 on more than 1.4 million papers and 18 million citation counts across 22 subfields in management. Our results confirm significant benefits for research impact from both team size and diversity, but also highlight drawbacks when teams become very large and heterogeneous. Moreover, we find a nonlinear positive effect of team size on research prestige that can be offset only by high levels of knowledge diversity. These findings are robust to a variety of proxies, controls, and estimation techniques, including instrumental variables and propensity score matching. This study investigates the relationship between corporate site visits (CSVs) and firms' real earnings management. Using a unique dataset of site visits to Chinese firms listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2016, we find that such visits are negatively associated with firms' real earnings management. The results are robust to using alternative CSV measures, controlling for alternative communication channels, and using the propensity score matching method. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the negative association between site visits and real earnings management is stronger for more complex firms and firms with greater information asymmetry. In addition, we find that CSVs are negatively associated with both management and corporate misconduct but not with accrual-based earnings management or restatements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Creating activity-friendly communities (AFCs) is an important strategy to increase physical activity (PA). While cross-sectional links between community environments and PA are well documented, their causal relationships remain insufficiently explored. Methods: Using the accelerometer and survey data collected from adults who moved to an AFC (cases) and similar non-AFC-residing adults who did not move (comparisons), this pre–post, case-comparison study examines if moving to an AFC increases PA. Data came from 115 participants (cases = 37, comparisons = 78) from Austin, Texas, who completed 2 waves of 1-weeklong data collection. Difference-in-difference analyses and fixed-effect models were used to test the significance of the pre–post differences in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) between cases and comparisons, for the full sample and the subsample of 37 pairs matched in key covariates using the Propensity Score Matching method. Results: Average treatment effect generated based on Propensity Score Matching and difference-in-difference showed that moving to this AFC led to an average of 10.88 additional minutes of daily MVPA (76.16 weekly minutes, P =.015). Fixed-effect models echoed the result with an increase of 10.39 minutes of daily MVPA after moving to the AFC. We also found that case participants who were less active at baseline and had higher income increased their MVPA more than their counterparts. Conclusions: This study showed that, among our study sample, moving to an AFC increased residents' PA significantly when compared to their premove level and the comparison group. This paper investigates the productivity effects for domestic suppliers from joining and exiting the value chains of foreign-owned multinational enterprises (MNEs). Our econometric analysis is based on firm-to-firm transactions recorded in the value-added tax declarations' data from Estonia and use of propensity score matching and difference-in-difference regression approach. The treatment analysis based on period 2015–2019 suggests that starting to supply the foreign-owned firms initially boosts the value added per employee of the domestic firms, including the effects on the scale of production and the capital–labor ratio. These first linkages to the foreign-owned MNEs do not affect the total factor productivity (TFP) of domestic firms, suggesting that the TFP effects take time to materialize. We find no significant positive effects on the second-tier suppliers: the positive effects are limited to the first-tier suppliers with direct links to foreign-owned firms. One novel result is the evidence that the productivity of suppliers does not fall, on average, after decreasing or ending supplier relationships with the foreign-owned firms. However, this average effect hides significant heterogeneity. Domestic firms with prior high levels of productivity and those at the time of exit from the MNE relationship start to export, gain in productivity in next periods, whereas the firms with low prior productivity levels lose. Background: Other‐cause mortality (OCM) can serve as a surrogate for access‐to‐care. The authors sought to compare prostate cancer–specific mortality (PCSM) in Black versus White men matched based on their calculated OCM risk. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for Black and White men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2004 to 2009, to collect long‐term follow‐up. A Cox regression was used to calculate the OCM risk using all available covariates. This calculated OCM risk was used to construct a 1:1 propensity score matched (PSM) cohort. Then, a competing‐risks multivariable tested the impact of race on PCSM. Results: A total of 94,363 patients were identified, with 19,398 Black men and 74,965 White men. The median (IQR) follow‐up was 11.3 years (9.8–12.8). In the unmatched‐cohort at 10‐years, PCSM and OCM were 5.5% versus 3.5% and 13.8% versus 8.4% in non‐Hispanic Black (NHB) versus non‐Hispanic White (NHW) patients (all p <.0001). The standardized mean difference was <0.15 for all covariates, indicating a good match. In the matched cohort at 10‐years, OCM was 13.6% and 10.0% in NHB versus NHW (p <.0001), whereas the PCSM was 5.3% versus 4.7% (p <.01). On competing‐risks multivariable analysis on PCSM, Black men had a hazard ratio of 1.08 (95% confidence interval, 0.98–1.20) compared to White men with a p =.13. Conclusions: The results of this study showed similar PCSM in Black and White patients, when matched with their calculated OCM risk. This report is the first to indicate at a population‐based level that race has no impact on PCSM. Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) have demonstrated associations with lowering cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the impact of SGLT-2is on individuals at dialysis commencement remains unclear. The aim of this real-world study is to study the association between SGLT-2is and outcomes in patients with T2DM at dialysis commencement. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of electronic health records (EHRs) of patients with T2DM from TriNetX Research Network database between January 1, 2012, and January 1, 2024. New-users using intention to treatment design was employed and propensity score matching was utilized to select the cohort. Clinical outcomes included major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and all-cause mortality. Safety outcomes using ICD-10 codes, ketoacidosis, urinary tract infection (UTI) or genital infection, dehydration, bone fracture, below-knee amputation, hypoglycemia, and achieving dialysis-free status at 90 days and 90-day readmission. Results: Of 49,762 patients with T2DM who initiated dialysis for evaluation, a mere 1.57% of patients utilized SGLT-2is within 3 months after dialysis. 771 SGLT-2i users (age 63.3 ± 12.3 years, male 65.1%) were matched with 771 non-users (age 63.1 ± 12.9 years, male 65.8%). After a median follow-up of 2.0 (IQR 0.3–3.9) years, SGLT-2i users were associated with a lower risk of MACE (adjusted Hazard Ratio [aHR] = 0.52, p value < 0.001), all-cause mortality (aHR = 0.49, p < 0.001). SGLT-2i users were more likely to become dialysis-free 90 days after the index date (aHR = 0.49, p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the incidence of ketoacidosis, UTI or genital infection, hypoglycemia, dehydration, bone fractures, below-knee amputations, or 90-day readmissions. Conclusions: Our findings indicated a lower incidence of all-cause mortality and MACE after long-term follow-up, along with a higher likelihood of achieving dialysis-free status at 90 days in SGLT-2i users. Background: Open liver resection necessitates a substantial upper abdominal inverted-L incision, resulting in severe pain and compromising patient recovery. Despite the efficacy of epidural analgesia in providing adequate postoperative analgesia, the potential epidural-related adverse effects should be carefully considered. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of continuous epidural analgesia and intravenous analgesia in open liver resection. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, collecting data from patients who underwent open liver resection between 2007 and 2017. Propensity score matching was implemented to mitigate confounding variables, with patients being matched in a 1:1 ratio based on propensity scores. The primary outcome was the comparison of postoperative morphine consumption at 24, 48, and 72 hours between the two groups. Secondary outcomes included pain scores, postoperative outcomes, and epidural-related adverse effects. Results: A total of 612 patients were included, and after matching, there were 204 patients in each group. Opioid consumption at 24, 48, and 72 hours postoperatively was statistically lower in the epidural analgesia group compared to the intravenous analgesia group (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in pain scores (p = 0.422). Additionally, perioperative hypotension requiring treatment, as well as nausea and vomiting, were significantly higher in the epidural analgesia group compared to the intravenous analgesia group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Epidural analgesia is superior to intravenous morphine in terms of reducing postoperative opioid consumption within the initial 72 h after open liver resection. Nevertheless, perioperative hypotension, which necessitates management, should be approached with consideration and vigilance. Background and Aims Methods Results Conclusions The impact of hepatitis C virus (HCV) eradication via direct‐acting antiviral (DAA) therapy on overall mortality, particularly non‐liver‐related mortality, is understudied.We recruited 4180 patients with chronic HCV infection who achieved sustained virological response (SVR) (HCV eradication) through DAA therapy (n = 2501, SVR group) or who did not receive antiviral therapy (n = 1679, non‐SVR group); 1236 from each group were chosen using propensity score matching. Causes of death and all‐cause mortality, including non‐liver‐related diseases, were investigated.Of the 4180 patients, 592 died during the follow‐up period. In the SVR group, the mortality rates from liver‐related and non‐liver‐related diseases were 16.5% and 83.5%, respectively. Compared to the non‐SVR group, mortality rates from liver‐related and non‐liver‐related diseases were 50.1% and 49.9%, respectively (p < .001). In non‐cirrhotic patients, multivariable analysis revealed that SVR was an independent factor associated with both liver‐related (hazard ratio [HR], .251; 95% confidence interval [CI], .092–.686) and non‐liver‐related (HR, .641; 95% CI, .415–.990) mortalities. In cirrhotic patients, multivariable analysis revealed that SVR remained an independent factor significantly associated with liver‐related mortality (HR, .151; 95% CI, .081–.279). In propensity score‐matched patients, the eradication of HCV (SVR group) decreased both liver‐related (p < .001) and non‐liver‐related mortality (p = .008) rates compared to persistent HCV infection (non‐SVR group).The elimination of HCV via DAA therapy reduced not only liver‐related mortality but also non‐liver‐related mortality in patients with chronic HCV. Objectives: The current study compared the outcome after orthopaedic surgeries in patients with rheumatoid arthritis receiving Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) versus biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Sixty-two patients with rheumatoid arthritis using JAKi preoperatively underwent orthopaedic surgeries. Using propensity score matching, these 62 patients were matched with 62 patients using bDMARDs preoperatively. The number of adverse events was counted. We also examined whether the drug-withholding period in the JAKi-treated group was associated with the occurrence of major postoperative adverse events, namely inflammatory flares and delayed wound healing. Results: JAKi-treated patients had a higher incidence of postoperative flares than bDMARD-treated patients (29% versus 12.1%, P = .01). The incidences of postoperative complications other than flares were not significantly different between the two groups. Among the JAKi-treated group, a longer perioperative drug-withholding period (≥11 days) was associated with a higher incidence of postoperative flares (P = .04). The incidences of delayed wound healing and surgical site infection were not associated with the duration of the JAKi-withholding period. Conclusions: JAKi-treated patients had a higher incidence of postoperative flares than bDMARD-treated patients. A total of ≥11 days of drug withdrawal was associated with postoperative flares. Background: The safety and efficacy of robotic liver resection (RLR) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been reported worldwide. However, the exact role of RLR in HCC patients with liver cirrhosis is not sufficiently determined. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on consecutive patients with cirrhosis or non-cirrhosis who received RLR for HCC from 2018 to 2023. Data on patients' demographics and perioperative outcomes were collected and analyzed. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the risk factors of prolonged postoperative length of stay (LOS) and morbidity. Results: Of the 571 patients included, 364 (64%) had cirrhosis. Among the cirrhotic patients, 48 (13%) were classified as Child–Pugh B. After PSM, the cirrhosis and non-cirrhosis group (n = 183) had similar operative time, estimated blood loss, postoperative blood transfusion, LOS, overall morbidity (p > 0.05). In addition, the intraoperative and postoperative outcomes were similar between the two groups in the subgroup analyses of patients with tumor size ≥ 5 cm, major hepatectomy, and high/expert IWATE difficulty grade. However, patients with Child–Pugh B cirrhosis had longer LOS and more overall morbidity than that of Child–Pugh A. Child–Pugh B cirrhosis, ASA score > 2, longer operative time, and multiple tumors were risk factors of prolonged LOS or morbidity in patients with cirrhosis. Conclusion: The presence of Child–Pugh A cirrhosis didn't significantly influence the difficulty and perioperative outcomes of RLR for selected patients with HCC. The application of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and novel immunotherapies has improved outcomes in patients with Ph + acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), and the issue of whether there is still a need for stem cell transplantation has become controversial. We performed a retrospective study to explore whether stem cell transplantation still held a place in patients with Ph + ALL if only imatinib and 2nd generation TKIs are available and affordable. A total of 292 patients were included. The median age was 38 years [range 14–64, IQR 28–48]. Patients receiving transplants (n = 216) had better rates of 4-year disease-free survival (DFS, 68% vs. 24%, P <.0001) and overall survival (OS, 72% vs. 47%, P <.0001) than those receiving continuous TKIs plus chemotherapy (TKI-chemo) (n = 76). In the multivariate analysis, male sex, WBC count ≥ 95 × 109/L and PLT count ≤ 154 × 109/L at diagnosis were significantly associated with poorer outcomes, and transplantation was significantly associated with favourable DFS and OS. In addition, the transplant outcomes were superior in any subgroup according to the number of risk variables. Furthermore, propensity score matching (PSM) analyses showed similar findings in the whole cohort and in age- and BCR-ABL1 level-based subgroups after the first or second consolidation. In conclusion, transplantation as a one-time procedure for adults with Ph + ALL patients remains important in countries lacking accessibility to third-generation TKIs or immunotherapies, regardless of the depth of the molecular response. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in health care utilization and guideline adherence for postpartum individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) who are engaged in a remote monitoring program, compared with usual care. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of postpartum individuals with HDP who delivered between March 2019 and June 2023 at a single institution. The primary exposure was enrollment in a remote hypertension management program that relies on patient home blood pressure (BP) measurement and centralized nursing team management. Patients enrolled in the program were compared with those receiving usual care. Outcomes included postpartum readmission, office visit within 6 weeks postpartum, BP measurement within 10 days, and initiation of antihypertensive medication. We performed multivariable logistic and conditional regression in a propensity score matched cohort. Propensity scores, generated by modeling likelihood of program participation, were assessed for even distribution by group, ensuring standardized bias of less than 10% after matching. RESULTS: Overall, 12,038 eligible individuals (6,556 participants, 5,482 in the control group) were included. Program participants were more likely to be White, commercially insured, be diagnosed with preeclampsia, and have higher prenatal and inpatient postpartum BPs. Differences in baseline factors were well-balanced after implementation of propensity score. Program enrollment was associated with lower 6-week postpartum readmission rates, demonstrating 1 fewer readmission for every 100 individuals in the program (propensity score--matched adjusted risk difference [aRD] 21.5, 95% CI, 22.6 to 20.46; adjusted risk ratio [aRR] 0.78, 95% CI, 0.65--0.93). For every 100 individuals enrolled in the program, 85 more had a BP recorded within 10 days (propensity score--matched aRD 85.4, 95% CI, 84.3--86.6), and six more had a 6-week postpartum office visit (propensity score--matched aRD 5.7, 95% CI, 3.9--7.6). Program enrollment was also associated with increased initiation of an antihypertensive medication postpartum (propensity score--matched aRR 4.44, 95% CI, 3.88--5.07). CONCLUSION: Participation in a postpartum remote BP monitoring program was associated with fewer postpartum hospital readmissions, higher attendance at postpartum visits, improved guideline adherence, and higher rates of antihypertensive use. Background: The efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy for high-risk stage II colon cancer (CC) has not been well established. Using propensity score matching, we previously reported that the 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was significantly higher in patients treated with uracil and tegafur plus leucovorin (UFT/LV) against surgery alone. We report the final results, including updated 5-year overall survival (OS) rates and risk factor analysis outcomes. Methods: In total, 1902 high-risk stage II CC patients with T4, perforation/penetration, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma/mucinous carcinoma, and/or < 12 dissected lymph nodes were enrolled in this prospective, non-randomized controlled study based on their self-selected treatment. Oral UFT/LV therapy was administered for six months after surgery. Results: Of the 1880 eligible patients, 402 in Group A (surgery alone) and 804 in Group B (UFT/LV) were propensity score-matched. The 5-year DFS rate was significantly higher in Group B than in Group A (P = 0.0008). The 5-year OS rates were not significantly different between groups. The inverse probability of treatment weighting revealed significantly higher 5-year DFS (P = 0.0006) and 5-year OS (P = 0.0122) rates in group B than in group A. Multivariate analyses revealed that male sex, age ≥ 70 years, T4, < 12 dissected lymph nodes, and no adjuvant chemotherapy were significant risk factors for DFS and/or OS. Conclusion: The follow-up data from our prospective non-randomized controlled study revealed a considerable survival advantage in DFS offered by adjuvant chemotherapy with UFT/LV administered for six months over surgery alone in individuals with high-risk stage II CC. Background: Endometrial carcinoma, the most common gynecologic carcinoma, has an excellent prognosis post-surgery when diagnosed early. The role of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in stages I–II endometrial carcinoma remains controversial. This study assesses the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in improving prognosis for these patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 1223 stage I–II endometrial carcinoma patients who underwent surgical treatment including total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and lymph-node biopsy or dissection across four Jikei University School of Medicine-affiliated facilities between 2001 and 2018. Patients were divided into low intermediate risk (LIR) and high intermediate risk (HIR) groups based on recurrence risk. Propensity score matching adjusted for various covariates was used to compare progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy and those who did not. Results: The study included 443 eligible patients, with 288 in the LIR group and 155 in the HIR group. Post propensity score matching, no significant difference in PFS or OS was observed between the observation and adjuvant chemotherapy groups within both risk categories. Notably, the 5-year OS for LIR was 97.6% in the observation group and 96.7% in the chemotherapy group; for HIR, the 5-year OS was similarly high with no significant difference. Conclusions: The findings suggest that postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy does not significantly contribute to the improvement of recurrence or prognosis in patients with stage I–II endometrial carcinoma who are categorized outside the low-risk group and have no lymph-node metastasis. Previous studies on exposure to violence lack a nuanced understanding of the causal effects of different exposure types on offending behaviors. This study, drawing on Pathways to Desistance Study (PDS) data tracking 1354 adjudicated youths aged 14–18 over 7 years, explores the contemporaneous (cross‐sectional), acute (after 1 year), enduring (after 3 years), and long‐term (after 6 years) causal effects of violence exposure on property and violent offending. The sample, predominantly male (86%), consisted of White (20%), Black (42%), and other (38%) individuals. The generalized propensity score is used to match unbalanced covariates across multiple exposure types, namely noninvolved (n = 392), witnessed (n = 577), experienced (n = 31), and experienced‐witnessed violence (n = 305). Results demonstrate the contemporaneous, acute, enduring, and long‐term effects of violence exposure on both violent and property offending, with varying durations and strengths across exposure types. The most pronounced risk effects are immediate, diminishing over time and potentially reversing in the long term as youth transition into adulthood. Among exposure types, experienced‐witnessed violence exhibits the most potent effects on offending, followed by witnessed violence and then experienced violence—a pattern consistent across the observed time points. Noteworthy is the finding that the impact of violence exposure is more pronounced for violent offending, diminishing more rapidly compared to the effects on property offending. Since 1978, millions of Chinese workers have migrated to seek personal development opportunities. However, little is known about what the world's largest internal migration means for the public. Safety perceptions concern the vital well-being of each individual and can indirectly indicate criminal activities in society. From a microscopic perspective, this study is the first attempt to focus on the impact of migration on individuals' public safety perceptions in China. Using the ordered probit model and conducting robustness tests using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Instrumental Variable (IV) methods, we found that an individual's public safety perception generally declines when the proportion of migrants in the community increases. However, the impacts on the various groups were different. Internal migration has been suggested to have a more significant influence on females, older people, high-income groups, locals, and individuals living in the east. Furthermore, migration negatively affected public safety perceptions in China, primarily by endangering employment and weakening social trust. This study has significant policy implications for the effective public safety administration in China. Likewise, the findings could also help many developing countries with migration management because there has been an increase in rural-urban migration during economic development. The aim of this study is to understand the impact of group maturity (age) on savings and investment behaviour of self-help group (SHG) members. Based on the survey data of 300 SHG members, the study finds that as groups mature or get older there is a three-fold rise in the share of household savings being diverted to savings in the SHGs. The results of the propensity score matching (PSM) reveal that group maturity has a positive impact on the per capita savings of member households. Furthermore, the usage of bank loans for a majority of beneficiaries distinctly shifts from consumption purposes to income-generating activities as the group becomes more mature. Parenteral ketorolac and intravenous (IV) acetaminophen have been used for prehospital analgesia, yet limited data exist on their comparative effectiveness. To evaluate the comparative effectiveness of IV acetaminophen and parenteral ketorolac for analgesia in the prehospital setting. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional evaluation of patients receiving IV acetaminophen or parenteral ketorolac for pain management in a large suburban EMS system between 1/1/2019 and 11/30/2021. The primary outcome was change in first to last pain score. Subgroup analysis was performed on patients with traumatic pain. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and propensity score matching (PSM) to estimate the treatment effect of acetaminophen versus ketorolac among all patients and the subgroup of those with traumatic pain. Of 2178 patients included, 856 (39.3%) received IV acetaminophen and 1322 (60.7%) received parenteral ketorolac. The unadjusted mean change in pain score was −1.9 (SD 2.4) for acetaminophen group and −2.4 (SD 2.4) for ketorolac. In the propensity score analyses, there was no statistically significant difference in pain score change for the acetaminophen group versus ketorolac among all patients (mean difference, IPTW: 0.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] −0.16, 0.37; PSM: 0.15, 95% CI −0.13, 0.43) and among those with traumatic pain (unadjusted: 0.18, 95% CI −0.35, 0.72; IPTW: 0.23, 95% CI −0.25, 0.71; PSM: −0.03, 95% CI −0.61, 0.54). Aim: This study was designed to investigate the association between Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and in‐hospital mortality and other clinical outcomes among patients with hyperglycemic crises. Method: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from electric medical records. A total of 1668 diabetic patients with hyperglycemic crises from six tertiary hospitals met the inclusion criteria. CCI < 4 was defined as low CCI and CCI ≥ 4 was defined as high CCI. Propensity score matching (PSM) with the 1:1 nearest neighbour matching method and the caliper value of 0.02 was used to match the baseline characteristics of patients with high CCI and low CCI to reduce the confounding bias. In‐hospital mortality, ICU admission, hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, acute kidney injury, length of stay (LOS), and hospitalisation expense between low CCI and high CCI were compared and assessed. Univariate and multivariate regression were applied to estimate the impact of CCI on in‐hospital and other clinical outcomes. Outcome: One hundred twenty‐one hyperglycemic crisis (HC) patients died with a mortality rate of 7.3%. After PSM, compared with low CCI, patients with high CCI suffered higher in‐hospital mortality, ICU admission, LOS, and hospitalisation expenses. After multivariate regression, age (aOR: 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06−1.18, p < 0.001), CCI(aOR: 4.42, 95% CI: 1.56−12.53, p = 0.005), uninsured (aOR: 22.32, 95% CI: 4.26−116.94, p < 0.001), shock (aOR: 10.57, 95% CI: 1.41−79.09, p = 0.022), mechanical ventilation (aOR: 75.29, 95% CI: 12.37−458.28, p < 0.001), and hypertension (aOR: 4.34, 95% CI: 1.37−13.82, p = 0.013) were independent risk factors of in‐hospital mortality of HC patients. Besides, high CCI was an independent risk factor for higher ICU Admission (aOR: 5.91, 95% CI: 2.31−15.08, p < 0.001), hypoglycemia (aOR: 2.19, 95% CI:1.01−4.08, p = 0.049), longer LOS (aOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.19−2.27, p = 0.021), and higher hospitalisation expense (aOR: 2089.97, 95% CI: 193.33−3988.61, p = 0.031) of HC patients. Conclusion: CCI is associated with in‐hospital mortality, ICU admission, hypoglycemia, LOS, and hospitalisation expense of HC patients. Background: Current literature demonstrates prophylactic enoxaparin to be efficacious in reducing venous thromboembolism (VTE) rates without significantly increasing risk for bleeding complications. Despite this evidence, prophylactic enoxaparin doses are frequently withheld for surgery or procedures. This exploratory study aims to quantify the risk of a VTE event in trauma patients associated with missed doses of prophylactic enoxaparin. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated trauma patients admitted to our Level 1 trauma center from January 1, 2012 to January 31, 2021. A 1:1 propensity match with ten variables was performed to compare patients receiving prophylactic enoxaparin that had a VTE and those that did not. The primary outcome was a VTE event. Results: 493 patients met inclusion criteria; 1:1 propensity score matching was performed resulting in a cohort of 184 patients. The percentage of patients that missed a prophylactic enoxaparin dose in the VTE group was higher than the no VTE group (34.8% vs 21.7%, P = 0.049). This is consistent when examining total missed doses (P = 0.038) and consecutively missed doses (P = 0.035). The odds of having a VTE for patients that missed at least one dose or more of enoxaparin are nearly two times greater (OR 1.92, 95% CI 0.997, 3.7). Conclusion: Missing enoxaparin doses significantly increases the risk of VTE in matched populations. Most prophylactic enoxaparin doses were held for procedures, and not for bleeding events. Trauma teams should carefully weigh the risk of bleeding complications associated with continuing enoxaparin prophylaxis against the significant thromboembolic risk of withholding it. • Provides a new framework for analyzing UIB credit risk by emphasizing the role of local government implicit debt governance. • Explores the moderating effect of financial technology development on the effectiveness of debt governance. • Examines the specific mechanisms (asset extension and risk warranty) through which debt governance influences UIB credit risk. • Compares the effectiveness of the 2018 and 2014 local government debt governance policies. Growing concerns surrounding urban investment bond (UIB) defaults in China necessitate a thorough examination of risk mitigation strategies. This study investigates the impact of local government implicit debt governance on UIB credit risk using a propensity score matching difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) approach. Our findings reveal that effective debt governance significantly reduces UIB credit risk, particularly for bonds issued by local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) with "high bargaining power". However, financial technology development may obscure credit risks and dampen the positive effects of governance. Further analysis, grounded in the "financial potential energy" framework, highlights the mediating roles of asset extension and risk warranty. Comparing the 2014 "Document No. 43" with the 2018 debt governance policy, we find the latter to be more effective in mitigating UIB credit risk. Engaging in export activities is a key factor influencing firm performance. This paper explores the export-productivity and export-capital intensity relationship using firm-level data from the Brazilian manufacturing industry over the period 2007–2014. The empirical strategy combines Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Differences in Differences (DD) methods and explores the fact that firms enter the external market at different moments, generating a variation in the period and permanence in international trade. We find static and dynamic effects on labor productivity, total factor productivity, and capital intensity. Firms that start exports experience an average productivity growth of about 5% and a 2% decrease in capital intensity compared to non-exporting firms. The permanence in the activity magnifies these impacts. After three periods, the growth (reduction) in productivity (capital intensity) is around 10.5% (4.7%). We identify heterogeneous effects, leading to variations in magnitude across dimensions such as technological intensity, size, age, ex-ante levels of productivity and capital intensity, and intensive margin of trade. To evaluate the risk of epilepsy in children who received neonatal phototherapy. A cohort of live singletons born at a Danish hospital (2002–2016) with a gestational age ≥ 35 weeks. We used Cox regression to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of epilepsy in children treated with neonatal phototherapy compared to children not treated with neonatal phototherapy in the general population, and in a subpopulation of children who had serum bilirubin measurement. Adjusted HRs (aHR) were computed using multivariable and propensity score matching models to take maternal and neonatal factors into consideration. Children were followed from day 29 after birth to diagnosis of epilepsy, death, emigration, or December 31, 2016. Among 65,365 children, 958 (1.5%) received neonatal phototherapy. Seven children (incidence rates (IRs): 10.8 /10,000 person-years) who received neonatal phototherapy and 354 children (IR: 7.7) who did not receive neonatal phototherapy were diagnosed with epilepsy. Neonatal phototherapy was not associated with an increased risk of epilepsy using the multivariable (aHR 0.95, 95% CI: 0.43–2.09) and propensity score matched (aHR 0.94, 95% CI: 0.39–2.28) models. In the subpopulation of 9,378 children with bilirubin measurement, 928 (9.9%) received neonatal phototherapy. In the analysis of the subpopulation in which bilirubin level and age at the time of bilirubin measurement were further taking into consideration, neonatal phototherapy was not associated with an increased risk of epilepsy using the multivariable (aHR 1.26, 95% CI: 0.54–2.97) and propensity score matched (aHR 1.24, 95% CI: 0.47–3.25) models, Conclusions: Neonatal phototherapy was not associated with an increased risk of epilepsy after taking maternal and neonatal factors into consideration. Early appropriate antimicrobial therapy plays a critical role for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection (SAB). We aim to determine the optimal time-window for appropriate antimicrobial therapy and evaluate the effects of delayed therapy on adverse clinical outcomes (in-hospital mortality, sepsis, and septic shock) in children with SAB by propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Receiver-operating characteristic was used to determine the cut-off point of the time to appropriate therapy (TTAT), the patients were divided into timely and delayed appropriate antimicrobial therapy (delayed therapy) groups accordingly. The PSM was used to balance the characteristics between the two groups, controlling the effects of potential confounders. Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox proportional hazards regression were applied to the matched groups to analyze the association between delayed therapy and clinical outcomes. Inverse probability of treatment weighting and propensity score covariate adjustment were also performed to investigate the sensitivity of the results under different propensity score-based approaches. In total, 247 patients were included in this study. The optimal cut-off point of TTAT was identified as 6.4 h, with 85.0% sensitivity and 69.2% specificity (AUC 0.803, 95% confidence interval 0.702–0.904). Eighty-seven (35.22%) of the 247 patients who received delayed therapy (TTAT ≥ 6.4 h) had higher in-hospital mortality (19.54% vs 1.88%, p < 0.001), higher incidences of sepsis (44.83% vs 15.00%, p < 0.001) and septic shock (32.18% vs 6.25%, p < 0.001) when compared to timely therapy (TTAT < 6.4 h) patients. After PSM analysis, a total of 134 episodes (67 in each of the two matched groups) were further analyzed. No statistically significant difference was observed in in-hospital mortality between delayed and timely -therapy groups (log-rank test, P = 0.157). Patients with delayed therapy had a higher incidence of sepsis or septic shock than those with timely therapy (log-rank test, P = 0.009; P = 0.018, respectively). Compared to the timely-therapy group, the hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval in delayed-therapy group were 2.512 (1.227–5.144, P = 0.012) for sepsis, 3.109 (1.166–8.290, P = 0.023) for septic shock. Conclusion: Appropriate therapy delayed 6.4 h may increase the incidence of sepsis and septic shock, with similar in-hospital mortality in patients with SAB. Objective: Ovarian carcinoma (OvCa) is more common in the elderly, but also affects the adolescent and young adult (AYA) generation, which refers to those aged 15–39 years. Although the characteristics of OvCa may differ between AYAs and non‐AYAs, limited information is currently available on differences in prognostic factors. Therefore, we herein investigated prognostic factors for and the prognosis of OvCa in AYAs. We also examined the prognostic impact of fertility‐sparing surgery in a subgroup analysis. Methods: We retrospectively collected data on 4897 patients with OvCa from the databases of multiple institutions and ultimately included 1161 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). We performed a survival analysis to compare AYAs and non‐AYAs with backgrounds that conformed to those of AYAs using the propensity score (PS) matching method. A Cox regression analysis was also conducted to evaluate each predictor of recurrence‐free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in the original population. As a subgroup analysis, a multivariate analysis stratified by the AYA and non‐AYA generations was performed. Results: In total, 119 AYA patients were included in this study. After PS adjustments, no significant differences were observed in RFS or OS between AYAs and non‐AYAs. Prognostic factors differed between AYAs and non‐AYAs, particularly in histology and cytology. A multivariate analysis stratified by the AYA and non‐AYA generations described that uterine‐preserving surgery (UPS) did not have a significant impact on the prognosis of AYAs or non‐AYAs. In cases with recurrence, no significant differences were observed in RFS and recurrent sites in the two groups. Conclusion: Characteristic prognostic factors for EOC in AYAs were identified. The present results indicate the limited prognostic impact of UPS for EOC in AYAs. Synopsis: There were no significant differences in prognosis between AYAs and non‐AYAs. Summary: Background: Glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1RA) show anti‐inflammatory properties. Aim: To evaluate their clinical impact on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) outcomes. Methods: Retrospective cohort study utilising the TriNetX database comparing IBD‐specific outcomes in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on GLP‐1RA compared to oral hypoglycaemic agents. The primary outcome was hospitalisation requiring intravenous steroids and IBD‐related surgery within 3 years. We performed 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) for demographics, co‐morbid conditions, BMI, laboratory values, HbA1c, and IBD medications including steroids. Results: We identified 1130 patients in the UC GLP‐1RA cohort (mean age: 58.9 ± 11.6 years, 56.3% female, 70.2% White, 57.2% with obesity) and 1140 patients in the CD GLP‐1RA cohort (mean age: 56.7 ± 11.5, 61.9% female, 73.6% White, 56.2% with obesity). After PSM, there was no difference in the risk of intravenous steroid use (aHR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.92–1.59) but a lower risk of colectomy (aHR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.14–0.97) between the UC GLP‐1RA and control cohort. There was no difference in the risk of intravenous steroid use (aHR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.80–1.34) but a lower risk of surgery (aHR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.36–0.84) between the CD GLP‐1RA and CD control cohort. There was no difference in the risk of oral steroid use or advanced therapy initiation in the UC and CD GLP‐1RA than control cohorts. Distal pancreatectomy (DP) is performed for lesions in the body and tail of the pancreas. The morbidity profile is considerable, mainly due to clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF). This study aims to investigate potential differences in CR-POPF related to transection site. An observational cohort study from a prospectively maintained database was performed. Subtotal distal pancreatectomy (SDP) was defined as transection over the superior mesenteric vein, and DP was defined as transection lateral to this point. Propensity score matching (PSM) in 1:1 fashion was applied based on demographical and perioperative variables. Six hundred and six patients were included in the analysis (1997–2020). Four hundred twenty (69.3%) underwent DP, while 186 (30.7%) underwent SDP. The rate of CR-POPF was 19.3% after DP and 20.4% after SDP (p = 0.74). SDP was associated with older age (63.1 vs 60.1 years, p = 0.016), higher occurrence of ductal adenocarcinoma (37.1 vs 17.6%, p = 0.001) and more frequent use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (3.8 vs 0.7%, p = 0.012). After PSM, 155 patients were left in each group. The difference in CR-POPF between DP and SDP remained statistically non-significant (20.6 vs 18.7%, p = 0.67). There have been increasing demands on multinational oil companies (MOCs) to provide community development programmes and security to their host communities in Nigeria. This is mainly because developmental projects and security are lacking in most of these communities and most of the time they are not provided by the government. Thus, we set out to examine the impact of MOCs' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) model on cutting the main drivers cum prompters of herder-farmer violence in the Niger Delta expanse of Nigeria. Results from the use of both propensity score matching and the logit model indicate that, though a very skimpy part of the CSR intervention is specifically aimed at alleviating herder-farmer conflict, CSR has made a momentous impact in the drops in land deprivation, social disparities, pressure over land as well as better people's lives in the region. The finding suggests that MOCs are well positioned to tackle the drivers and triggers of farmer-herder violence when investment in cluster development boards (CDBs) is designed to improve land management infrastructure, train local leaders in dispute resolution techniques and prioritise trust between communities and the security forces. Aim: Choosing the initial treatment for type 2 diabetes (T2D) is pivotal, requiring consideration of solid clinical evidence and patient characteristics. Despite metformin's historical preference, its efficacy in preventing cerebrovascular events lacked empirical validation. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between first‐line monotherapy (metformin or non‐metformin antidiabetic medications) and cerebrovascular complications in patients with T2D without diabetic complications. Methods: We analysed 9090 patients with T2D without complications who were prescribed either metformin or non‐metformin medications as initial therapy. Propensity score matching ensured group comparability. Cox regression analyses, stratified by initial metformin use, assessed cerebrovascular disease risk, adjusting for multiple covariates and using competing risk analysis. Metformin exposure was measured using cumulative defined daily doses. Results: Metformin users had a significantly lower crude incidence of cerebrovascular diseases compared with non‐users (p <.0001). Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) consistently showed an association between metformin use and a lower risk of overall cerebrovascular diseases (aHRs: 0.67‐0.69) and severe events (aHRs: 0.67‐0.69). The association with reduced risk of mild cerebrovascular diseases was significant across all models (aHRs: 0.73‐0.74). Higher cumulative defined daily doses of metformin correlated with reduced cerebrovascular risk (incidence rate ratio: 0.62‐0.94, p <.0001), indicating a dose‐dependent effect. Conclusion: Metformin monotherapy is associated with a reduced risk of cerebrovascular diseases in early‐stage T2D, highlighting its dose‐dependent efficacy. However, the observed benefits might also be influenced by baseline differences and the increased risks associated with other medications, such as sulphonylureas. Aim: To investigate the effect of dipeptidyl peptidase‐4 inhibitors (DPP4‐Is) and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists (GLP1‐RAs) on diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and DFU‐related outcomes (lower limb amputation [LLA], DFU‐related hospitalization and mortality). Methods: We performed a cohort study with data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum database with linkage to hospital data. We included people with type 2 diabetes starting treatment with metformin. Then we propensity score matched new users of DPP4‐Is and sulphonylureas (N = 98 770), and new users of GLP1‐RAs and insulin (N = 25 422). Cox proportional hazards models estimated the hazard ratios (HRs) for the outcomes. Results: We observed a lower risk of DFU with both DPP4‐I use versus sulphonylurea use (HR 0.88, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.79‐0.97) and GLP1‐RA use versus insulin use (HR 0.44, 95% CI: 0.32‐0.60) for short‐term exposure (≤ 400 days) and HR 0.74 (95% CI: 0.60‐0.92) for long‐term exposure (>400 days). Furthermore, the risks of hospitalization and mortality were lower with both DPP4‐I use and GLP1‐RA use. The risk of LLA was lower with GLP1‐RA use. The results remained consistent across several sensitivity analyses. Conclusions: Incretin‐based therapy was associated with a lower risk of DFU and DFU‐related outcomes. Aim: To evaluate the impact of denosumab on (i) the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and (ii) long‐term health outcomes (microvascular [neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy] and macrovascular [cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular accident] complications, and all‐cause mortality) in patients with T2D, before (iii) combining results with prior studies using meta‐analysis. Methods: A retrospective analysis of data in a large global federated database (TriNetX; Cambridge, MA) was conducted from 331 375 patients, without baseline T2D or cancer, prescribed either denosumab (treatment, n = 45 854) or bisphosphonates (control, n = 285 521), across 83 healthcare organizations. Propensity score matching (1:1) of confounders was undertaken that resulted in 45 851 in each cohort. Secondary analysis further evaluated the impact of denosumab on long‐term health outcomes in patients with T2D. Additionally, we systematically searched prior literature that assessed the association between denosumab and T2D. Estimates were pooled using random‐effects meta‐analysis. Risk of bias and evidence quality were assessed using Cochrane‐endorsed tools. Results: Denosumab (vs. bisphosphonates) was associated with a lower risk of incident T2D over 5 years (hazard ratio 0.83 [95% confidence interval {CI} 0.78‐0.88]). Secondary analysis showed significant risk reduction in all‐cause mortality (0.79 [0.72‐0.87]) and foot ulceration (0.67 [0.53‐0.86]). Also, pooled results from four studies (three observational, one randomized controlled trial) following meta‐analysis showed a reduced relative risk (RR [95% CI]) for incident T2D in patients prescribed denosumab (0.83 [0.79‐0.87]) (I2 = 10.76%). Conclusions: This is the largest cohort study to show that denosumab treatment is associated with a reduced RR of incident T2D, as well as an associated reduced RR of all‐cause mortality and microvascular complications, findings that may influence guideline development in the treatment of osteoporosis, particularly in patients who are at a high risk of T2D. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of different basal insulins (BI) prescribed as an add‐on to or switch from glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist (GLP‐1 RA) therapy. Materials and Methods: Retrospective, real‐world data from electronic medical records of 32 Italian diabetes clinics were used, after propensity score adjustment, to compare effectiveness after 6 months of treatment with second‐ versus first‐generation BI (2BI vs. 1BI) or glargine 300 U/ml versus degludec 100 U/ml (Gla‐300 vs. Deg‐100), when added to (ADD‐ON) or in substitution of (SWITCH) GLP‐1 RA. Only comparisons, including a minimum of 100 patients per group, were performed to ensure adequate robustness of the analyses. Results: In the ADD‐ON cohort (N = 700), greater benefits of 2BI versus 1BI were found in glycated haemoglobin {HbA1c; estimated mean difference: −0.32% [95% confidence interval (CI) −0.62; −0.02]; p =.04} and fasting blood glucose [FBG; −20.73 mg/dl (95% CI −35.62; −5.84); p =.007]. In the SWITCH cohort (N = 2097), greater benefits of 2BI versus 1BI were found in HbA1c [−0.22% (95% CI −0.42; −0.02); p =.03], FBG [−10.15 mg/dl (95% CI −19.04; −1.26); p =.03], and body weight [−0.67 kg (95% CI −1.30; −0.04); p =.04]. In the SWITCH cohort starting 2BI (N = 688), marked differences in favour of Gla‐300 versus Deg‐100 were documented in HbA1c [−0.89% (95% CI −1.26; −0.52); p <.001] and FBG [−17.89 mg/dl (95% CI −32.45; −3.33); p =.02]. Using propensity score matching as a sensitivity analysis, the benefit on HbA1c was confirmed [−0.55% (95% CI –1.02; −0.08); p =.02]. BI titration was suboptimal in all examined cohorts. Exploring networks of mental and behavioral problems in children and adolescents may identify differences between one-child and multi-child families. This study compared the network structures of mental and behavioral problems in children and adolescents in one-child families versus multi-child families based on a nationwide survey. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to match children and adolescents from one-child families with those from multi-child families. Mental and behavioral problems were assessed using the Achenbach's Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) with eight syndromal subscales. In the network analysis, strength centrality index was used to estimate central symptoms, and case-dropping bootstrap method was used to assess network stability. The study included 39,648 children and adolescents (19,824 from one-child families and 19,824 from multi-child families). Children and adolescents from multi-child families exhibited different network structure and higher global strength compared to those from one-child families. In one-child families, the most central symptoms were "Social problems", "Anxious/depressed" and "Withdrawn/depressed", while in multi-child families, the most central symptoms were "Social problems", "Rule-breaking behavior" and "Anxious/depressed". Differences in mental and behavioral problems among children and adolescents between one-child and multi-child families were found. This paper investigates the influence of accreditations on tourism demand, namely, World Heritage List (WHL) designations and Geographical Indications (GIs). The analysis examines Italian data at the NUTS3 level spanning from 1999 to 2019. Contribution of the study is two-fold. Firstly, by utilizing a Difference-in-Differences model in conjunction with Propensity Score Matching (PSM-DiD), the study evaluates the impact of jointly recognizing both accreditations as a binary treatment (yes/no). Secondly, by employing Generalised Propensity Score Matching (GPSM) for continuous treatment, the study gauges how the impact of the two accreditations is contingent on the number of recognitions (consistency). These impact assessments concern both domestic and international tourists. Conclusions highlight the positive effects, encompassing tourism arrivals, overnight stays, and tourist expenditures, associated with both the combined recognition (PSM-DiD) and the consistency of accreditation (GPSM). Introduction: Different limb lengths are used in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, as there is no consensus which limb length strategy has the best outcomes. The biliopancreatic limb (BPL) is thought to play an important role in achieving weight loss and associated comorbidity resolution. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a longer BPL on weight loss and comorbidity improvement at 5 years after primary RYGB. Methods: All patients aged ≥ 18 years undergoing primary RYGB between 2014–2017 with registered follow-up 5 years after surgery were included. Long BPL was defined as BPL ≥ 100 cm and short BPL as BPL < 100 cm. The primary outcome was achieving at least 25% total weight loss (TWL) at 5 years. Secondary outcomes included absolute %TWL and improvement of comorbidities. A propensity score matched logistic and linear regression was used to estimate the difference in outcomes between patients with long and short BPL. Results: At 5 years, long BPL had higher odds to achieve ≥ 25% TWL (odds ratio (OR) 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.01 – 1.41]) and was associated with 1.26% higher absolute TWL (β = 1.26, 95% CI [0.53 – 1.99]). Furthermore, long BPL was more likely to result in improved diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.17, 95% CI [1.31 – 3.60]) and hypertension (OR = 1.45, 95% CI [1.06 – 1.99]). Background: The incidence of obesity in African Americans (AAs) is higher than in non-AA in the USA. Previous studies using large national databases report that AA patients have worse outcomes than non-AA patients. Objectives: To assess perioperative outcomes among AA patients after MBS at a center of excellence (COE) that serves a large, diverse patient population. Setting: University Hospital Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients undergoing MBS between 2010 and 2020 at our two accredited MBSAQIP (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program) COEs where the AA population makes up over 35% of the population. Preoperative variables were compared using unpaired t-test or chi-squared test where appropriate. Thirty-day outcomes were compared following propensity score matching (exact algorithm) of demographics and comorbidities. Results: Overall, 5742 patients (AA = 2058, 36%) had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (AA = 1028, 26%) or sleeve gastrectomy (AA = 1030, 27%). AA patients were more often female (90.2% vs. 80.2%, p < 0.001) and had higher rates of hypertension (56.3% vs. 47.8%, p < 0.001), while non-AA patients had higher rates of hyperlipidemia (27.3% vs. 20.7%, p < 0.001) and obstructive sleep apnea (41.2% vs. 37.1%, p = 0.0024). Matched data showed that AA patients had higher rates of pulmonary embolism (PE) (0.3% vs. 0.1%, p = 0.020) and more emergency department visits (7.0% vs. 5.1%, p = 0.012) but no differences in mortality, readmission, reintervention, or reoperation rates. Conclusions: In a diverse area, AA patients who underwent MBS had similar perioperative outcomes compared to non-AA patients except that they experienced higher rates of PE. Associate's degree completion is billed as the quickest way to upskill the workforce and a ticket to the middle class. Yet 35 million Americans leave college without a degree. Black and Hispanic students are more likely than White and Asian students to leave college. We examined whether economic benefits differ between those whose highest level of education is "some college, no degree (SCND)" compared to an associate's degree by analyzing interaction effects among race/ethnicity, sex, citizenship, and nativity. Using data from the Current Population Survey 2019 Annual Social and Economic Supplement, we employed regressions to examine heterogeneity in economic rewards. We also used propensity score matching to estimate causal treatment effects using observational data. On average, associate's workers reaped more economic rewards than SCND workers. In almost every category, the advantage of completing the associate's degree was lost when the worker held at least one socially disadvantaged identity. Economic disadvantage was multiplied for some workers who had more than one disadvantaged identity. Our findings support the economic value of completing an associate's degree and unmask the disparate labor market outcomes for workers of diverse races/ethnicities, sexes, and nationalities. Background: The purpose of this study was to compare opioid analgesic use and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) between patients with and without cannabis use disorder (CUD). Hypothesis: We hypothesized that patients with CUD would have greater postoperative opioid usage with comparable improvement in PROs. Study Design: Retrospective matched-cohort study. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: We identified patients with CUD who underwent primary ACLR at a single center and had minimum 3-month follow-up. Patients with CUD were propensity score matched 1:1 to non-CUD controls with respect to age, sex, and follow-up time. Total refills, days supply, and morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) of opioid analgesics prescribed were calculated for up to 1 year postoperatively. Patient-Reported Outcome Information System (PROMIS) instruments were used to assess PROs. Opioid use and outcomes were compared between CUD and control groups using Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test. P values <0.05 were considered significant. Results: A total of 104 patients with CUD were matched to 104 controls. Both groups were majority male (65.4% male, 34.6% female). The CUD group had a mean age of 29.9 years and mean follow-up time of 16.1 months. There was no significant intergroup difference in opioid prescription rates (CUD 82.7% vs control 83.7%, P ≥ 0.99). Among patients prescribed opioids, there were no significant intergroup differences in total days supply (P = 0.67), total MMEs (P = 0.71), or MMEs per day (P = 0.65). There were no significant differences in pre- to postoperative improvement in PROMIS Pain Intensity (P = 0.51), Pain Interference (P = 0.81), Mobility (P = 0.90), Mental Health (P = 0.74), or Physical Health (P = 0.94). Conclusion: There were no significant differences detected in opioid usage or PRO improvement after ACLR between patients with CUD and those without. However, because a sample size was not determined a priori, a larger sample may show a difference. Clinical Relevance: CUD does not appear to correlate with inferior outcomes after ACLR. Background The clinical outcomes and implications of radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) on cancer-specific survival (CSS) in World Health Organization classification of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) are not well established. Material and Methods The data of eligible patients with minimally invasive FTC (mi-FTC), encapsulated angioinvasive FTC (ea-FTC), or widely invasive FTC (wi-FTC) between 2000 and 2020 were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. CSS, the primary outcome, was compared among the 3 subtypes of patients with FTC before and after adjusting for differences using propensity score matching (PSM). The patients with FTC in different subtypes were then divided into 2 groups: the RAIT group and the no-RAIT group. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were applied to discover the relationships of factors associated with CSS in the each PSM cohort. Results A total of 2433 patients with mi-FTC, 216 patients with ea-FTC, and 554 patients with wi-FTC were enrolled in the original cohorts, respectively. Patients with mi-FTC or ea-FTC had similar CSS (P =.805), which was better than that of patients with wi-FTC (P <.001; P =.021). Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that RAIT was not associated with improved CSS in either the mi-FTC PSM cohort (hazard ratio [HR], 1.21; 95% CI,.46-3.18; P =.705) or the wi-FTC PSM cohort (HR, 0.56; 95% CI,.35-1.08; P =.086). However, subgroup analysis demonstrated that patients with wi-FTC and N1 stage (HR, 0.44; 95% CI,.20-.99; P =.018) or M1 stage (HR, 0.25; 95% CI,.11-.53; P <.001) could gain CSS advantage from RAIT. How does greenfield versus M&A FDI establishment mode influence intangible asset creation in the parent companies of Chinese MNEs undertaking overseas knowledge sourcing/strategic asset-seeking types of FDI? We hypothesise that while springboard type cross-border acquisitions provide opportunities for the rapid addition of locally embedded competence-creating foreign subsidiaries, challenges in developing intra-MNE knowledge diffusion channels may frustrate integration and thus retard subsequent growth of parent firms' intangible assets. Greenfield R&D FDI, by contrast, may initially lack local embeddedness but holds out the potential for superior intra-MNE linkages and thus reverse knowledge diffusion to the MNE parent. Our results, based upon propensity score matching and difference in difference models comparing CMNE parent outcomes for FDI projects over the 2003–2018 period, support this argument. We discuss implications for mainstream international business theorising, including springboard theory, which largely overlooks greenfield establishment mode as a means of rapid firm-level catch-up for emerging market MNEs. This study examines whether and to what extent the availability of grandparents in the home plays a buffering role in the labor supply of parents of children aged 0–5 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of grandparents as a childcare resource and its association with parents' labor supply have received increasing attention in the literature. Limited childcare options during the pandemic underscore the need to investigate how working parents manage the double burden of family and work and what role grandparents could play. I use monthly data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) from January to May 2019 and 2020. Using a propensity score matching method, parents in three-generational households were matched to those in two-generational households. Then, I employ a difference-in-differences approach with propensity score-matched samples. Results show that parents living with grandparents are more likely to have worked last week and worked longer during the pandemic relative to parents in a two-generational household. The effects of the availability of coresident grandparents are more pronounced among single and low-educated parents than their counterparts. Furthermore, mothers and fathers show heterogeneous responses to the presence of grandparents during the pandemic. In conclusion, results highlight that grandparents played a buffering role in mitigating the adverse impact of the pandemic on parental labor supply. This study sheds light on the importance of grandparental care specifically and informal care and home-based care in general. Background: The American Thyroid Association guidelines primarily recommend central neck dissection for papillary thyroid carcinoma with advanced primary tumors or clinically positive neck nodes. However, the appropriate extent of dissection remains unclear. We aimed to compare the rate of locoregional recurrence between unilateral and bilateral central neck dissection in invasive papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods: Among 330 consecutive patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection for advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma, 212 underwent unilateral central neck dissection (UCND group) while 118 underwent bilateral central neck dissection (BCND group). We performed 1:1 propensity score matching, resulting in 99 matched pairs. Surgical outcomes and safety were compared between the two groups. Additionally, the impact of surgery on locoregional recurrence was compared using survival analysis. Results: During a follow‐up of 47.8 ± 20.4 months, 29 (8.8%) patients experienced locoregional recurrence within the entire study cohort. Following propensity score matching, no significant difference in recurrence‐free survival was observed between the two groups (log‐rank p = 0.516). Multivariate analysis revealed that only T4 staging was an independent risk factor for locoregional recurrence (p = 0.006). The mean number of total and metastatic central lymph nodes retrieved were significantly greater in BCND group (14.1 vs. 9.3, p < 0.001 and 6.8 vs. 4.6, p = 0.005, respectively). There was no significant difference in postoperative stimulated thyroglobulin levels between the two groups (0.79 ng/mL vs. 1.44 ng/mL, p = 0.389). Conclusion: The present study demonstrates no prognostic benefit in conducting bilateral central neck dissection. We aimed to explore simple and effective clinical parameters or combinations to predict coronary artery dilation and aneurysm formation in pediatric patients with Kawasaki disease (KD). This retrospective cohort study included pediatric patients with KD from January, 2013 to December, 2022. Multiple demographic and clinical data were collected, collated, and calculated from the medical records. Then they were divided into the coronary artery dilation and aneurysm formation group or the non-coronary artery dilation and aneurysm formation group. Lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) was transformed into its natural logarithm and expressed as lnLCR. A total of 64 pediatric patients with KD were enrolled in this cohort study after 1:3 propensity score matching (PSM). For each unit increase in lnLCR, the possibility of coronary artery dilation and aneurysm formation decreased to 0.419 times the original value. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of lnLCR combined with albumin (ALB), ALB, and lnLCR to classify pediatric patients with KD into the coronary artery dilation and aneurysm formation group were 0.781, 0.692, and 0.743, respectively. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the extent to which the Indonesian conditional cash transfer (CCT), known as the Family Hope Program (FHP), impacts the probability of children engaging in labour activities. Design/methodology/approach: This study utilizes data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey in 2014, focussing on periods following the implementation of the FHP. To estimate the impact of FHP on child labour in Indonesia, the authors employ a propensity score matching strategy to balance the characteristics observed between the participant and non-participant groups. Findings: The estimates show that FHP has no statistical impact on child labour across all matching techniques. This implies that receiving the CCT does not always help poor households decrease the probability of stopping their children from participating in labour activities. Social implications: The conditions applied to the beneficiaries, which only require children to attend school without requiring them to stop working, may not effectively address the issue of child labour. The current structure and design of the FHP need to be re-evaluated and improved to effectively combat child labour. Originality/value: Despite numerous studies examining the impact of CCT on child labour which remains inconclusive in Indonesia, this study contributes to the existing literature by considering children participating in labour activities across all types of work without focussing on specific education levels or regions. This study examines the impact of short selling on firm-level employment growth. Exploiting the staggered short-sale deregulation in China, we find that short selling has a significant negative effect on employment growth. We establish causality by applying a propensity score matching difference-in-differences (PSM-DiD) method and an instrumental variable (IV) approach. Exploring the underlying mechanisms, we find that financial constraints, information transparency, and agency costs are three plausible channels by which short selling affects employment growth. Furthermore, a series of cross-sectional tests suggest that the effect of short selling on employment growth is concentrated in non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), firms with higher operating risk, firms with lower governance quality, firms in regions with weaker labor protection, and in periods prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Overall, our study offers novel evidence on the consequences of short selling on employment growth in an emerging market, complementing the literature on short sales and labor market outcomes. Purpose: Carbon reduction in the construction industry is related to the achievement of carbon emission peaks and carbon neutrality targets. Therefore, exploring the influence of current carbon reduction policies on the construction industry is necessary. China's low-carbon pilot (LCP) policy has been extensively studied, while LCPs mechanism and effectiveness on carbon reduction in the construction industry remain to be explored. Design/methodology/approach: This study selected four provincial LCP regions as case studies and adopted the grounded theory method for case studies to analyze the implementation mechanism of the LCP policy on carbon reduction in the construction industry. Then, this study adopted the propensity score matching and difference-in-differences regression (PSM-DID) approach to evaluate the influence of the LCP policy on carbon intensity (CI) in the construction industry by using panel data taken from 30 provinces in China between 2008 and 2017. Findings: The authors found that (1) the LCP policy promotes carbon reduction in the construction industry through the crossing implementation mechanism of five vertical support approaches and five horizontal support approaches. This paper focuses on demonstrating the nexus between public sector jobs and subjective well-being by applying China Household Finance Survey data and exploring the potential transmission channels behind the connection. An instrumental variable and the propensity score matching methods are utilized to address hidden endogeneity bias. Our findings confirm that Chinese public sector jobs have a constructive effect on SWB. From the perspective of work allowance and marriage-matching, mechanism analysis justifies that working inside the system indirectly affects SWB through receiving higher annual bonuses and marrying people who also work within the system or have a higher education level.
