2. Behavioral Strategies for Trauma-Informed Elementary General Music Education for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

Elementary general music teachers encounter challenging behaviors in the music classroom when teaching students with emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD), which require prevention and response. In this article, I reviewed literature on pedagogical strategies and interventions for students with EBD in the elementary general music classroom. The review is organized as follows: (a) introduction and process, (b) overview of trauma, (c) overview of EBD, (d) principles of trauma-informed care, and (e) summary and recommendations. Through this review, I present current knowledge on best practices for understanding and framing the unique behavioral needs of special learners with EBD through a trauma-informed lens.

3. Frictional Matterings: (Re)thinking Identity and Subjectivity in the Coming-to-Be of Literacies

Abstract

The authors take up the guest editors' invitation to address the difference that posthumanist and feminist 'new' materialist theories make and why this matters politically and ethically. Alongside events from an early childhood (kindergarten) classroom, the authors engage with current conversations which build on and extend Kimberlé Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality with post-philosophies by scholars who identify as Black feminist, Women of Colour feminist, queer theorist, Chicana and/or Indigenous scholars. In an iterative, slow thinking-making-with-reading, this contemplation brings intersectionality and post-philosophies into conversation to explore diffractive-affirmative possibilities for social and curricular (re)shapings. The authors create a philosophical playground to think "identity" and "subjectivity" when engaging with these theories both with/in classroom events and with/in their own co-constituted scholarly and teacherly becomings. The authors set forth several potentially generative frictions in teaching and researching environments.

15. An Examination of Freshman Student Attrition from the Fall Semester to the Spring Semester as Related to William Glasser's Choice Theory and Basic Needs

Abstract

Freshman student retention has become a major focus in higher education. The loss of incoming students is not only financially burdensome to the institution, but it can be academically and personally discouraging for students. Many theoretical constructs have been applied to the problem of student attrition, including the individual constructs of economical, psychological, sociological and spiritual influences, and the construct of institutional influences. Probably the most influential theory of student departure is that of Vincent Tinto (1993), who postulated that a lack of social and academic integration contributes to student withdrawal from an institution. Tinto's theory has informed much of the research that is found within the retention related literature; however, with freshman retention still at a loss of approximately one-third of incoming students from year to year, there remains room for researching additional and previously unconsidered areas of influence on student withdrawal behavior. The purpose of this study was to apply William Glasser's (1998) choice theory to the problem of college freshman attrition and to explore the relationship between need satisfaction based on choice theory and basic needs, demographic variables, and freshman attrition, specifically from the first semester freshman year to the second semester freshman year. The study assessed the strength of basic needs fulfillment satisfaction in first-time freshmen and examined possible predictive relationships associated with freshman attrition. Data were collected from participants enrolled in required freshman classes at two small, private universities in the South. Students were surveyed using the Student Needs Survey developed by Burns, Vance, Szadokierski, and Stockwell (2006), which includes questions designed to assess each of the basic needs as postulated by Glasser (1998). The basic needs include the need for freedom, fun, survival, power, and belonging. In addition, the survey included questions designed to collect information related to the predictor variables of gender, ethnicity, residency, intercollegiate athletic participation, curriculum placement, and first generation college status. There were 210 participants who completed the survey. The data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Need satisfaction profiles of both non-returning and returning students were identified. Findings of the study indicated that none of the variables were significant to predict enrollment status in the spring semester. The variables approaching significance included ethnicity and freedom, while variables worthy of further study included residency and curriculum placement. Although significance was not found, the findings did provide a starting point for future research and new considerations of possible factors influencing student withdrawal behavior. Abstract

The heterogeneous and highly recombinogenic genus Haemophilus comprises several species, some of which are pathogenic to humans. All share an absolute requirement for blood-derived factors during growth. Certain species, such as the pathogen Haemophilus influenzae and the commensal Haemophilus haemolyticus, are thought to require both haemin (X-factor) and nicoti-namide adenine dinucleotide (NAD, V-factor), whereas others, such as the informally classified ‘Haemophilus intermedius subsp. intermedius’, and Haemophilus parainfluenzae, only require V-factor. These differing growth requirements are commonly used for species differentiation, although a number of studies are now revealing issues with this approach. Here, we perform large-scale phylogenomics of 240 Haemophilus spp. genomes, including five ‘H. intermedius’ genomes generated in the current study, to reveal that strains of the ‘H. intermedius’ group are in fact haemin-independent H. haemolyticus (hiHh). Closer examination of these hiHh strains revealed that they encode an intact haemin biosynthesis pathway, unlike haemin-dependent H. haemolyticus and H. influenzae, which lack most haemin biosynthesis genes. Our results suggest that the common ancestor of modern-day H. haemolyticus and H. influenzae lost key haemin biosynthesis loci, likely as a consequence of specialized adaptation to otorhi-nolaryngeal and respiratory niches during their divergence from H. parainfluenzae. Genetic similarity analysis demonstrated that the haemin biosynthesis loci acquired in the hiHh lineage were likely laterally transferred from a H. parainfluenzae ancestor, and that this event probably occurred only once in hiHh. This study further challenges the validity of phenotypic methods for differentiating among Haemophilus species, and highlights the need for whole-genome sequencing for accurate characterization of species within this taxonomically challenging genus.

Although it is difficult to be certain from the photographs in Figure 2, the colonies do not appear typical of the species to the microbiologists amongst us, who have seen several thousand isolates of B.pseudomallei over the past 30 years. Furthermore, the authors do not report whether the isolate was oxidase positive or negative. We believe that more comprehensive methods of confirming the identity, particularly genomic analysis, should have been undertaken before publishing the case.4 Unfortunately, the postamplification 16s analysis described in the paper might not have been able to distinguish between B.pseudomallei and other Burkholderia species (particularly B.thailandensis and several as-yet-uncharacterized Burkholderia spp.), and we would have recommended additional testing, for example, multilocus se

Abstract

Historically, Boswelliaresin, commonly known as frankincense, has been used for a variety of applications, including medicinal purposes and in religious ceremonies. These practices continued into the modern era, in which the trade of resin has increased dramatically. The genus Boswelliacontains many species that are not currently protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), but research has found that some of these populations are predicted to decrease by 50 % in the next two decades due to overexploitation (Bongers et al., 2019). This highlights the need for a method that can identify Boswelliaresins. In this research, resin from nine different species of Boswelliawere collected and analyzed in positive ion mode by Direct Analysis in Real Time Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry (DART TOFMS) by dissolving the resin in methanol to obtain a chemotype devoid of background noise. Chemometric analysis of the data indicated that positive ion spectra from the resins separated the species effectively, indicating that DART TOFMS can be used to identify resins in trade.

Abstract

Because of the rich omega-3 fatty acids content, harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) oil is a popular supplement that is packaged as pills in Canada and sold for medicinal purposes, although this practice is banned in the United States. Due to US regulations, it is important to be able to distinguish between fish oil and seal oil, but the taxonomic determination of oils provenance has been a difficult problem to solve. In this study, Direct Analysis in Real Time time-of-flight mass spectrometry (DART TOFMS) was used to analyze the chemotypes of blubber samples collected from seven species of marine mammals, including seals, sea lions, and a porpoise. Results indicated that the chemotype profiles found in negative-ion mode could be used to separate all of the species using Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components (DAPC). Consequently, this study suggests that it may be possible to identify the taxonomic source of marine mammal oils based on chemical chemotypes.
