Large X-ray observatories such as Chandra and XMM-Newton have been delivering scientific breakthroughs in research fields as diverse as our Solar System, the astrophysics of stars, stellar explosions and compact objects, accreting super-massive black holes, and large-scale structures traced by the hot plasma permeating and surrounding galaxy groups and clusters. The recently launched observatory XRISM is opening in earnest the new observational window of non-dispersive high-resolution spectroscopy. However, several quests are left open, such as the effect of the stellar radiation field on the habitability of nearby planets, the Equation-of-State regulating matter in neutron stars, the origin and distribution of metals in the Universe, the processes driving the cosmological evolution of the baryons locked in the gravitational potential of Dark Matter and the impact of supermassive black hole growth on galaxy evolution, just to mention a few. Furthermore, X-ray astronomy is a key player in multi-messenger astrophysics. Addressing these quests experimentally requires an order-of-magnitude leap in sensitivity, spectroscopy and survey capabilities with respect to existing X-ray observatories. This paper succinctly summarizes the main areas where high-energy astrophysics is expected to contribute to our understanding of the Universe in the next decade and describes a new mission concept under study by the European Space Agency, the scientific community worldwide and two International Partners (JAXA and NASA), designed to enable transformational discoveries: NewAthena. The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a programme to study a minimally biased sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Accurate and precise mass measurements are required to exploit CHEX-MATE as an astrophysical laboratory and a calibration sample for cosmological probes in the era of large surveys. We measured masses based on the galaxy dynamics, which are highly complementary to weak-lensing or X-ray estimates. We analysed the sample with a uniform pipeline that is stable both for poorly sampled or rich clusters - using spectroscopic redshifts from public (NED, SDSS, and DESI) or private archives - and dedicated observational programmes. We modelled the halo mass density and the anisotropy profile. Membership is confirmed with a cleaning procedure in phase space. We derived masses from measured velocity dispersions under the assumed model. We measured dynamical masses for 101 CHEX-MATE clusters with at least ten confirmed members within the virial radius r_200c. Estimated redshifts and velocity dispersions agree with literature values when available. Validation with weak-lensing masses shows agreement within 8+-16(stat.)+-5(sys.)%, and confirms dynamical masses as an unbiased proxy. Comparison with {\it Planck} masses shows them to be biased low by 34+-3(stat.)+-5(sys.)%. The intra-cluster medium is prone to turbulent motion that will contribute to the non-thermal heating of the gas, complicating the use of galaxy clusters as cosmological probes. Indirect approaches can estimate the intensity and structure of turbulent motions by studying the associated fluctuations in gas density and X-ray surface brightness. In this work, we want to constrain the gas density fluctuations at work in the CHEX-MATE sample to obtain a detailed view of their properties in a large population of clusters. We use a simulation-based approach to constrain the parameters of the power spectrum of density fluctuations, assuming a Kolmogorov-like spectrum and including the sample variance, further providing an approximate likelihood for each cluster. This method requires clusters to be not too disturbed, as fluctuations can originate from dynamic processes such as merging. Accordingly, we remove the less relaxed clusters (centroid shift $w>0.02$) from our sample, resulting in a sample of 64 clusters. We define different subsets of CHEX-MATE to determine properties of density fluctuations as a function of dynamical state, mass and redshift, and investigate the correlation with the presence or not of a radio halo. We found a positive correlation between the dynamical state and density fluctuation variance, a non-trivial behaviour with mass and no specific trend with redshift or the presence/absence of a radio halo. The injection scale is mostly constrained by the core region. The slope in the inertial range is consistent with Kolmogorov theory. When interpreted as originating from turbulent motion, the density fluctuations in $R_{500}$ yield an average Mach number of $M_{3D}\simeq 0.4\pm 0.2$, an associated non-thermal pressure support of $ P_{turb}/P_{tot}\simeq (9\pm 6) \%$ or a hydrostatic mass bias $b_{turb}\simeq 0.09\pm 0.06$, in line with what is expected from the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, abstract slightly abridged for Arxiv

Galaxy clusters are the products of structure formation through myriad physical processes that affect their growth and evolution throughout cosmic history. As a result, the matter distribution within galaxy clusters, or their shape, is influenced by cosmology and astrophysical processes, in particular the accretion of new material due to gravity. We introduce an analysis method to investigate the 3D triaxial shapes of galaxy clusters from the Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton -- Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE). In this work, the first paper of a CHEX-MATE triaxial analysis series, we focus on utilizing X-ray data from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect maps from Planck and ACT to obtain a three dimensional triaxial description of the intracluster medium (ICM) gas. We present the forward modeling formalism of our technique, which projects a triaxial ellipsoidal model for the gas density and pressure to compare directly with the observed two dimensional distributions in X-rays and the SZ effect. A Markov chain Monte Carlo is used to estimate the posterior distributions of the model parameters. Using mock X-ray and SZ observations of a smooth model, we demonstrate that the method can reliably recover the true parameter values. In addition, we apply the analysis to reconstruct the gas shape from the observed data of one CHEX-MATE galaxy cluster, Abell 1689, to illustrate the technique. The inferred parameters are in agreement with previous analyses for that cluster, and our results indicate that the geometrical properties, including the axial ratios of the ICM distribution, are constrained to within a few percent. With much better precision than previous studies, we thus further establish that Abell 1689 is significantly elongated along the line of sight, resulting in its exceptional gravitational lensing properties., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Pressure profiles are sensitive probes of the thermodynamic conditions and the internal structure of galaxy clusters. The intra-cluster gas resides in hydrostatic equilibrium within the Dark Matter gravitational potential. However, this equilibrium may be perturbed, e.g. as a consequence of thermal energy losses, feedback and non-thermal pressure supports. Accurate measures of the gas pressure over the cosmic times are crucial to constrain the cluster evolution as well as the contribution of astrophysical processes. In this work we presented a novel algorithm to derive the pressure profiles of galaxy clusters from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal measured on a combination of Planck and South Pole Telescope (SPT) observations. The synergy of the two instruments made it possible to track the profiles on a wide range of spatial scales. We exploited the sensitivity to the larger scales of the Planck High-Frequency Instrument to observe the faint peripheries, and the higher spatial resolution of SPT to solve the innermost regions. We developed a two-step pipeline to take advantage of the specifications of each instrument. We first performed a component separation on the two data-sets separately to remove the background (CMB) and foreground (galactic emission) contaminants. Then we jointly fitted a parametric pressure profile model on a combination of Planck and SPT data. We validated our technique on a sample of 6 CHEX-MATE clusters detected by SPT. We compare the results of the SZ analysis with profiles derived from X-ray observations with XMM-Newton. The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. We present a multiwavelength study of RXC J2014.8-2430, the most extreme cool-core cluster in the Representative $XMM-Newton$ Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS), using $Chandra$ X-ray, Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Array (VLA), and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations. While feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is thought to be the dominant mechanism by which a cooling flow is suppressed, the $Chandra$ imaging observations surprisingly do not reveal the bi-lateral X-ray cavities expected in the intracluster medium (ICM) of an extreme cool core hosting a powerful radio source. We discuss the limits on the presence of any radio bubbles associated with any undetected X-ray cavities. We place upper limits on any significant X-ray AGN in the brightest cluster galaxy, and show that the X-ray peak is offset from the central radio source, which exhibits a steep low frequency radio spectrum indicative of electron ageing. The SOAR data reveal an extended, luminous emission line source. From our narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging of the BCG, the central H$\alpha$ peak is coincident with the radio observations, yet offset from the X-ray peak, consistent with sloshing found previously in this cluster. ALMA observations reveal a large reservoir of molecular gas that traces the extended H$\alpha$ emission. We conclude either that the radio source and its cavities in the X-ray gas are nearly aligned along the line of sight, or that ram pressure induced by sloshing has significantly displaced the cool molecular gas feeding it, perhaps preempting the AGN feedback cycle. We argue that the sloshing near the core is likely subsonic, as expected, given the co-location of the H$\alpha$, CO(1-0), radio continuum, and stellar emission peaks and their proximity to the intact cool core seen in X-ray., Comment: 20 pages (including the appendix), 15 figures. In this work, we performed an analysis of the X-ray morphology of the 118 CHEX-MATE (Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation) galaxy clusters, with the aim to provide a classification of their dynamical state. To investigate the link between the X-ray appearance and the dynamical state, we considered four morphological parameters: the surface brightness concentration, the centroid shift, and the second- and third-order power ratios. These indicators result to be: strongly correlated with each other, powerful in identifying the disturbed and relaxed population, characterised by a unimodal distribution and not strongly influenced by systematic uncertainties. In order to obtain a continuous classification of the CHEX-MATE objects, we combined these four parameters in a single quantity, M, which represents the grade of relaxation of a system. On the basis of the M value, we identified the most extreme systems of the sample, finding 15 very relaxed and 27 very disturbed galaxy clusters. From a comparison with previous analysis on X-ray selected samples, we confirmed that the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) clusters tend to be more disturbed. Finally, by applying our analysis on a simulated sample, we found a general agreement between the observed and simulated results, with the only exception of the concentration. This latter behaviour, is partially related to the presence of particles with high smoothed-particle hydrodynamics density in the central regions of the simulated clusters due to the action of the idealised isotropic thermal Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, 10 tables. Using Chandra observations, we derive the $Y_{\rm X}$ proxy and associated total mass measurement, $M_{500}^{\rm Y_X}$, for 147 clusters with $z \leq 0.35$ from the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalog, and for 80 clusters with $z \leq 0.30$ from an X-ray flux-limited sample. We re-extract the Planck $Y_{\rm SZ}$ measurements and obtain the corresponding mass proxy, $M_{500}^{\rm SZ}$, from the full Planck mission maps, minimizing the Malmquist bias due to observational scatter. The masses re-extracted using the more precise X-ray position and characteristic size agree with the published PSZ2 values, but yield a significant reduction in the scatter (by a factor of two) in the $M_{500}^{\rm SZ}$-$M_{500}^{\rm X}$ relation. The slope is $0.93\pm0.03$, and the median ratio, $M_{500}^{\rm SZ}/M_{500}^{\rm X}= 0.91\pm0.01$, is within the expectations from known X-ray calibration systematics. The $Y_{\rm SZ}/Y_{\rm X}$ ratio is $0.88\pm0.02$, in good agreement with predictions from cluster structure, and implying a low level of clumpiness. In agreement with the findings of the Planck Collaboration, the slope of the $Y_{\rm SZ}$-$D_{\rm A}^{-2} Y_{X}$ flux relation is significantly less than unity ($0.89\pm0.01$). Using extensive simulations, we show that this result is not due to selection effects, intrinsic scatter, or covariance between quantities. We demonstrate analytically that changing the $Y_{\rm SZ}$-$Y_{X}$ relation from apparent flux to intrinsic properties results in a best-fit slope that is closer to unity and increases the dispersion about the relation. The redistribution resulting from this transformation implies that the best fit parameters of the $M_{500}^{\rm SZ}$-$M_{500}^{\rm X}$ relation will be sample-dependent., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, and 6 tables. We report the scaling relations derived by fitting the X-ray parameters determined from analyzing the XMM-Newton observations of 120 galaxy clusters in the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich sample spanning the redshift range of 0.059$<$$z$$<$0.546. We find that the slopes of all the investigated scaling relations significantly deviate from the self-similar predictions, if self-similar redshift evolution is assumed. When the redshift evolution is left free to vary, the derived slopes are more in agreement with the self-similar predictions. Relaxed clusters have on average $\sim$30$\%$ higher X-ray luminosity than disturbed clusters at a given mass, a difference that, depending on the relative fraction of relaxed and disturbed clusters in the samples (e.g. SZ vs X-ray selected), have a strong impact in the normalization obtained in different studies. Using the core-excised cluster luminosities reduces the scatter and brings into better agreement the $L$-$M_{tot}$ and $L$-$T$ relations determined for different samples. $M_{tot}$-$T$, $M_{tot}$-$Y_X$, and $M_{tot}$-$M_{gas}$ relations show little dependence on the dynamical state of the clusters, but the normalizations of these relations may depend on the mass range investigated. Although most of the clusters investigated in this work reside at relatively low redshift, the fits prefer values of $\gamma$, the parameter accounting for the redshift evolution, different from the self-similar predictions. This suggests an evolution ($<$2$\sigma$ level, with the exception of the $M_{tot}$-$T$ relation) of the scaling relations. For the first time, we find significant evolution ($>$3$\sigma$) of the $M_{tot}$-$T$ relation, pointing to an increase of the kinetic-to-thermal energy ratio with redshift. In high-energy astronomy, spectro-imaging instruments such as X-ray detectors allow investigation of the spatial and spectral properties of extended sources including galaxy clusters, galaxies, diffuse interstellar medium, supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae. In these sources, each physical component possesses a different spatial and spectral signature, but the components are entangled. Extracting the intrinsic spatial and spectral information of the individual components from this data is a challenging task. Current analysis methods do not fully exploit the 2D-1D (x,y,E) nature of the data, as the spatial and spectral information are considered separately. Here we investigate the application of a Blind Source Separation algorithm that jointly exploits the spectral and spatial signatures of each component in order to disentangle them. We explore the capabilities of a new BSS method (General Morphological Component Analysis; GMCA), initially developed to extract an image of the Cosmic Microwave Background from Planck data, in an X-ray context. The performance of GMCA on X-ray data is tested using Monte-Carlo simulations of supernova remnant toy models, designed to represent typical science cases. We find that GMCA is able to separate highly entangled components in X-ray data even in high contrast scenarios, and can extract with high accuracy the spectrum and map of each physical component. A modification is proposed to improve the spectral fidelity in the case of strongly overlapping spatial components, and we investigate a resampling method to derive realistic uncertainties associated to the results of the algorithm. Applying the modified algorithm to the deep Chandra observations of Cassiopeia A, we are able to produce detailed maps of the synchrotron emission at low energies (0.6-2.2 keV), and of the red/blue shifted distributions of a number of elements including Si and Fe K.

Clusters of galaxies, the largest collapsed structures in the Universe, are located at the intersection of extended filaments of baryons and dark matter. Cosmological accretion onto clusters through large scale filaments adds material at cluster outskirts. Kinetic energy in the form of bulk motions and turbulence due to this accretion provides a form of pressure support against gravity, supplemental to thermal pressure. Significant amount of non-thermal pressure support could bias cluster masses derived assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, the primary proxy for cluster cosmology studies. Sensitive measurements of Doppler broadening and shift of astrophysical lines, and the relative fluctuations in thermodynamical quantities (e.g., density, pressure, and entropy) are primary diagnostic tools. Forthcoming planned and proposed X-ray (with large etendue, throughput, and high spectral resolution) and SZ observatories will provide crucial information on the assembly and virialisation processes of clusters, involving turbulent eddies cascading at various spatial scales and larger gas bulk motions in their external regions to the depth or their potential wells., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

We present results of the X-ray analyses of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2399 ($z=0.058$) using the XMM-Newton and Suzaku satellites. This cluster is classified as a low surface brightness (LSB) cluster. It has a bimodal structure in X-rays, and the X-ray-emission peaks are significantly offset from the peaks in gas temperature. By de-projecting the annular spectra, the temperature and electron density in the central $r<0.1r_{200}$ region are measured to be 3.6~keV and $1.4\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$, respectively. This yields a very high gas entropy, $\sim 300~{\rm keV\,cm^{2}}$, in the central region, comparable to the values observed in other LSB clusters. The scaled entropy of Abell 2399 is the highest among the REXCESS cluster sample. The spatial distribution of the member galaxies exhibits multiple substructures, the locations of which are significantly different from those in the X-ray image. We discovered a clear discontinuity in the X-ray brightness and temperature distributions in the western gas clump, which provides evidence of the presence of a cold front. Therefore, our results strongly suggest that A2399 has experienced a merger and that the high central entropy originates from the merger activity., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer of the ESA Athena X-ray observatory. Over a field of view of 5' equivalent diameter, it will deliver X-ray spectra from 0.2 to 12 keV with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV on ~5 arcsecond pixels. The X-IFU is based on a large format array of super-conducting molybdenum-gold Transition Edge Sensors cooled at about 90 mK, each coupled with an absorber made of gold and bismuth with a pitch of 249 microns. A cryogenic anti-coincidence detector located underneath the prime TES array enables the non X-ray background to be reduced. A bath temperature of about 50 mK is obtained by a series of mechanical coolers combining 15K Pulse Tubes, 4K and 2K Joule-Thomson coolers which pre-cool a sub Kelvin cooler made of a 3He sorption cooler coupled with an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator. Frequency domain multiplexing enables to read out 40 pixels in one single channel. A photon interacting with an absorber leads to a current pulse, amplified by the readout electronics and whose shape is reconstructed on board to recover its energy with high accuracy. The defocusing capability offered by the Athena movable mirror assembly enables the X-IFU to observe the brightest X-ray sources of the sky (up to Crab-like intensities) by spreading the telescope point spread function over hundreds of pixels. Thus the X-IFU delivers low pile-up, high throughput (>50%), and typically 10 eV spectral resolution at 1 Crab intensities, i.e. a factor of 10 or more better than Silicon based X-ray detectors. In this paper, the current X-IFU baseline is presented, together with an assessment of its anticipated performance in terms of spectral resolution, background, and count rate capability. The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the cryogenic imaging spectrometer on board the future X-ray observatory \textsl{Athena}. With a hexagonal array of 3840 AC-biased Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it will provide narrow-field observations (5$^{\prime}$ equivalent diameter) with unprecedented high spectral resolution (2.5 eV up to 7 keV) over the 0.2 - 12 keV bandpass. Throughout its observations, the X-IFU will face various sources of X-ray background. Specifically, the so-called Non-X-ray Background (NXB) caused by the interaction of high-energy cosmic rays with the instrument, may lead to a degradation of its sensitivity in the observation of faint extended sources (e.g. galaxy clusters outskirts). To limit this effect, a cryogenic anti-coincidence detector (CryoAC) will be placed below the detector plane to lower the NXB level down to the required level of $5 \times 10^{-3}$ cts/s/cm$^{2}$/keV over 2 - 10 keV. In this contribution, we investigate ways to accurately monitor the NXB and ensure the highest reproducibility in-flight. Using the limiting science case of the background-dominated observation of galaxy clusters outskirts, we demonstrate that a reproducibility of 2\% on the absolute knowledge of the background is required to perform driving science objectives, such as measuring abundances and turbulence in the outskirts. We study the abundance of star-forming and quiescent galaxies in a sample of 21 massive clusters at 0.5 0.67R_500 (95%CL). We present a detailed study of the integrated total hydrostatic mass profiles of the five most massive ($M^{\mathrm{SZ}}_{500} > 5 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) galaxy clusters selected at $z\sim1$ via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. These objects represent an ideal laboratory to test structure formation models where the primary driver is gravity. Optimally exploiting spatially-resolved spectroscopic information from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, we used both parametric (forward, backward) and non-parametric methods to recover the mass profiles, finding that the results are extremely robust when density and temperature measurements are both available. Our X-ray masses at $R_{500}$ are higher than the weak lensing masses obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), with a mean ratio of $1.39^{+0.47}_{-0.35}$. This offset goes in the opposite direction to that expected in a scenario where the hydrostatic method yields a biased, underestimated, mass. We investigated halo shape parameters such as sparsity and concentration, and compared to local X-ray selected clusters, finding hints for evolution in the central regions (or for selection effects). The total baryonic content is in agreement with the cosmic value at $R_{500}$. Comparison with numerical simulations shows that the mass distribution and concentration are in line with expectations. These results illustrate the power of X-ray observations to probe the statistical properties of the gas and total mass profiles in this high-mass, high-redshift regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present analysis results for a nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1631 at $z~=~0.046$ using the X-ray observatory Suzaku. This cluster is categorized as a low X-ray surface brightness cluster. To study the dynamical state of the cluster, we conduct four-pointed Suzaku observations and investigate physical properties of the Mpc-scale hot gas associated with the A1631 cluster for the first time. Unlike relaxed clusters, the X-ray image shows no strong peak at the center and an irregular morphology. We perform spectral analysis and investigate the radial profiles of the gas temperature, density, and entropy out to approximately 1.5~Mpc in the east, north, west, and south directions by combining with the XMM-Newton data archive. The measured gas density in the central region is relatively low (${\rm a~few} \times~10^{-4}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$) at the given temperature ($\sim2.9~{\rm keV}$) compared with X-ray-selected clusters. The entropy profile and value within the central region ($r<0.1~r_{200}$) are found to be flatter and higher ($\gtrsim400~ {\rm keV~cm}^2$). The observed bolometric luminosity is approximately three times lower than that expected from the luminosity-temperature relation in previous studies for relaxed clusters. These features are also observed in another low surface brightness cluster, Abell 76. The spatial distributions of galaxies and the hot gas appear to be different. The X-ray luminosity is relatively lower than that expected from the velocity dispersion. We investigate the evolution of the dark matter density profiles of the most massive galaxy clusters in the Universe. Using a `zoom-in' procedure on a large suite of cosmological simulations of total comoving volume of $3\,(h^{-1}\,\rm Gpc)^3$, we study the 25 most massive clusters in four redshift slices from $z\sim 1$ to the present. The minimum mass is $M_{500} > 5.5 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ at $z=1$. Each system has more than two million particles within $r_{500}$. Once scaled to the critical density at each redshift, the dark matter profiles within $r_{500}$ are strikingly similar from $z\sim1$ to the present day, exhibiting a low dispersion of 0.15 dex, and showing little evolution with redshift in the radial logarithmic slope and scatter. They have the running power law shape typical of the NFW-type profiles, and their inner structure, resolved to $3.8\,h^{-1}$ comoving kpc at $z=1$, shows no signs of converging to an asymptotic slope. Our results suggest that this type of profile is already in place at $z>1$ in the highest-mass haloes in the Universe, and that it remains exceptionally robust to merging activity., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. X-ray observations show that galaxy clusters have a very large range of morphologies. The most disturbed systems which are good to study how clusters form and grow and to test physical models, may potentially complicate cosmological studies because the cluster mass determination becomes more challenging. Thus, we need to understand the cluster properties of our samples to reduce possible biases. This is complicated by the fact that different experiments may detect different cluster populations. For example, SZ selected cluster samples have been found to include a greater fraction of disturbed systems than X-ray selected samples. In this paper we determined eight morphological parameters for the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zeldovich (ESZ) objects observed with XMM-Newton. We found that two parameters, concentration and centroid-shift, are the best to distinguish between relaxed and disturbed systems. For each parameter we provide the values that allow one to select the most relaxed or most disturbed objects from a sample. We found that there is no mass dependence on the cluster dynamical state. By comparing our results with what was obtained with REXCESS clusters, we also confirm that indeed the ESZ clusters tend to be more disturbed, as found by previous studies., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. We derive and compare the fractions of cool-core clusters in the {\em Planck} Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich sample of 164 clusters with $z \leq 0.35$ and in a flux-limited X-ray sample of 100 clusters with $z \leq 0.30$, using {\em Chandra} observations. We use four metrics to identify cool-core clusters: 1) the concentration parameter: the ratio of the integrated emissivity profile within 0.15 $r_{500}$ to that within $r_{500}$, and 2) the ratio of the integrated emissivity profile within 40 kpc to that within 400 kpc, 3) the cuspiness of the gas density profile: the negative of the logarithmic derivative of the gas density with respect to the radius, measured at 0.04 $r_{500}$, and 4) the central gas density, measured at 0.01 $r_{500}$. We find that the sample of X-ray selected clusters, as characterized by each of these metrics, contains a significantly larger fraction of cool-core clusters compared to the sample of SZ selected clusters (44$\pm$7\% vs. 28$\pm$4\% using the concentration parameter in the 0.15--1.0 $r_{500}$ range, 61$\pm$8\% vs. 36$\pm$5\% using the concentration parameter in the 40--400 kpc range, 64$\pm$8\% vs. 38$\pm$5\% using the cuspiness, and 53$\pm$7\% vs. 39$\pm$5\% using the central gas density). Qualitatively, cool-core clusters are more X-ray luminous at fixed mass. Hence, our X-ray flux-limited sample, compared to the approximately mass-limited SZ sample, is over-represented with cool-core clusters. We describe a simple quantitative model that uses the excess luminosity of cool-core clusters compared to non-cool-core clusters at fixed mass to successfully predict the observed fraction of cool-core clusters in X-ray selected samples., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) will provide spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy from 0.2 to 12 keV, with 5 arc second pixels over a field of view of 5 arc minute equivalent diameter and a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV. In this paper, we first review the core scientific objectives of Athena, driving the main performance parameters of the X-IFU, namely the spectral resolution, the field of view, the effective area, the count rate capabilities, the instrumental background. We also illustrate the breakthrough potential of the X-IFU for some observatory science goals. Then we briefly describe the X-IFU design as defined at the time of the mission consolidation review concluded in May 2016, and report on its predicted performance. Finally, we discuss some options to improve the instrument performance while not increasing its complexity and resource demands (e.g. count rate capability, spectral resolution). The Wide Field Imager (WFI) is one of two instruments for the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena). In this paper we summarise three of the many key science objectives for the WFI - the formation and growth of supermassive black holes, non-gravitational heating in clusters of galaxies, and spin measurements of stellar mass black holes - and describe their translation into the science requirements and ultimately instrument requirements. The hot ionized gas of the intra-cluster medium emits thermal radiation in the X-ray band and also distorts the cosmic microwave radiation through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. Combining these two complementary sources of information through innovative techniques can therefore potentially improve the cluster detection rate when compared to using only one of the probes. Our aim is to build such a joint X-ray-SZ analysis tool, which will allow us to detect fainter or more distant clusters while maintaining high catalogue purity. We present a method based on matched multifrequency filters (MMF) for extracting cluster catalogues from SZ and X-ray surveys. We first designed an X-ray matched-filter method, analogous to the classical MMF developed for SZ observations. Then, we built our joint X-ray-SZ algorithm by combining our X-ray matched filter with the classical SZ-MMF, for which we used the physical relation between SZ and X-ray observations. We show that the proposed X-ray matched filter provides correct photometry results, and that the joint matched filter also provides correct photometry when the $F_{\rm X}/Y_{500}$ relation of the clusters is known. Moreover, the proposed joint algorithm provides a better signal-to-noise ratio than single-map extractions, which improves the detection rate even if we do not exactly know the $F_{\rm X}/Y_{500}$ relation. We present results from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and ROSAT observations of the Planck SZ-detected cluster A3716 (PLCKG345.40-39.34 - G345). We show that G345 is, in fact, two subclusters separated on the sky by 400 kpc. We measure the subclusters' gas temperatures (~ 2-3 keV), total (~ 1-2 x 10^14 solar masses) and gas (~ 1-2 x 10^13 solar masses) masses, gas mass fraction within r500, entropy profiles, and X-ray luminosities (~ 10^43 erg/s). Using the gas density and temperature profiles for both subclusters, we show that there is good (0.8 sigma) agreement between the expected Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signal predicted from the X-ray data and that measured from the Planck mission, and better agreement within 0.6 sigma when we re-computed the Planck value assuming a two component cluster model, with relative amplitudes fixed based on the X-ray data. Dynamical analysis shows that the two galaxy subclusters are very likely (> 97% probability) gravitationally bound, and in the most likely scenario, the subclusters will undergo core passage in 500 +- 200 Myr. The northern subcluster is centrally peaked and has a low entropy core, while the southern subcluster has a high central entropy. The high central entropy in the southern subcluster can be explained either by the mergers of several groups, as suggested by the presence of five giant ellipticals or by AGN energy injection, as suggested by the presence of a strong radio source in one of its massive elliptical galaxies, or by a combination of both processes., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables. Galaxy clusters are known to host a variety of extended radio sources: tailed radio galaxies whose shape is modelled by the interaction with the intra-cluster medium (ICM); radio bubbles filling cavities in the ICM distribution and rising buoyantly through the thermal gas; diffuse giant radio sources ("halos" and "relics") revealing the presence of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields in the intra-cluster volume. It is currently the subject of an active debate how the non-thermal components that we observe at radio wavelengths affect the physical properties of the ICM and depend on the dynamical state of galaxy clusters. In this work we start our SKA1 feasibility study of the "radio cluster zoo" through simulations of a typical radio-loud cluster, hosting several bright tailed radio galaxies and a diffuse radio halo. Realistic simulations of SKA1 observations are obtained through the MeqTrees software. Observations and cosmological simulations show galaxy clusters as a family of nearly self-similar objects with properties that can be described by scaling relations as a function of e.g. mass and time. Here we study the scaling relations between the galaxy velocity dispersion and X-ray quantities like X-ray bolometric luminosity and temperature in galaxy clusters at high redshifts (0.64 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1.46). We also compare our results with the similar study of the local HIFLUGCS sample. For the analysis, we use a set of 15 distant galaxy clusters extracted from the literature plus a sample of 10 newly discovered clusters selected in X-rays by the \XMM Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) with more than 10 confirmed spectroscopic members per cluster. We also study the evolution of this scaling relation by comparing the high redshift results with the data from the local HIFLUGCS sample. We also investigated the $L_X - T_X$ and the $\sigma_v - T_X$ relations for the 15 clusters in the literature sample. We report the results of the X-ray and kinematic analysis of 10 newly detected high redshift clusters and provide their spectroscopic and kinematic details. For the entire, distant sample we find a slope fully consistent with the one typical of local clusters, albeit with a large associated uncertainty. The study on the evolution of the amplitude reveals a positive offset if the self-similar evolution is neglected, hence possibly indicating the need for including evolutionary effects. However, the $L_X - T_X$ relation is found to be in good agreement with the local relation without any significant redshift evolution. Finally, the $\sigma_v - T_X$ relation appears to slightly deviate from the theoretical expectation that galaxies and gas particles have a similar specific kinetic energy. The backbone of the large-scale structure of the Universe is determined by processes on a cosmological scale and by the gravitational interaction of the dominant dark matter. However, the mobile baryon population shapes the appearance of these structures. Theory predicts that most of the baryons reside in vast unvirialized filamentary structures that connect galaxy groups and clusters, but the observational evidence is currently lacking. Because the majority of the baryons are supposed to exist in a large-scale, hot and dilute gaseous phase, X-rays provide the ideal tool to progress our understanding. This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. We present the results of Chandra and Suzaku X-ray observations of nine moderate-redshift (0.16 < z < 0.42) clusters discovered via the Red-sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). Surface brightness profiles are fitted to beta models, gas masses are determined, integrated spectra are extracted within R2500, and X-ray temperatures and luminosities are inferred. The Lx-Tx relationship expected from self-similar evolution is tested by comparing this sample to our previous X-ray investigation of nine high-redshift (0.6 < z < 1.0) optically selected clusters. We find that optically selected clusters are systematically less luminous than X-ray selected clusters of similar X-ray temperature at both moderate and high-z. We are unable to constrain evolution in the Lx-Tx relation with these data, but find it consistent with no evolution, within relatively large uncertainties. To investigate selection effects, we compare the X-ray properties of our sample to those of clusters in the representative X-ray selected REXCESS sample, also determined within R2500. We find that while RCS cluster X-ray properties span the entire range of those of massive clusters selected by other methods, their average X-ray properties are most similar to those of dynamically disturbed X-ray selected clusters. This similarity suggests that the true cluster distribution might contain a higher fraction of disturbed objects than are typically detected in X-ray selected surveys., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS. Observational galaxy cluster studies at z>1.5 probe the formation of the first massive M>10^14 Msun dark matter halos, the early thermal history of the hot ICM, and the emergence of the red-sequence population of quenched early-type galaxies. We present first results for the newly discovered X-ray luminous galaxy cluster XMMU J1007.4+1237 at z=1.555, detected and confirmed by the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) survey. We selected the system as a serendipitous weak extended X-ray source in XMM-Newton archival data and followed it up with two-band near-infrared imaging and deep optical spectroscopy. We can establish XMMU J1007.4+1237 as a spectroscopically confirmed, massive, bona fide galaxy cluster with a bolometric X-ray luminosity of Lx=(2.1+-0.4)\times 10^44 erg/s, a red galaxy population centered on the X-ray emission, and a central radio-loud brightest cluster galaxy. However, we see evidence for the first time that the massive end of the galaxy population and the cluster red-sequence are not yet fully in place. In particular, we find ongoing starburst activity for the third ranked galaxy close to the center and another slightly fainter object. At a lookback time of 9.4Gyr, the cluster galaxy population appears to be caught in an important evolutionary phase, prior to full star-formation quenching and mass assembly in the core region. We present a comprehensive galaxy cluster study of XMMU J1230.3+1339 based on a joint analysis of X-ray data, optical imaging and spectroscopy observations, weak lensing results, and radio properties for achieving a detailed multi-component view of this newly discovered system at z=0.975. We find an optically very rich and massive system with M200$\simeq$(4.2$\pm$0.8)$\times$10^14 M$\sun$, Tx$\simeq$5.3(+0.7--0.6)keV, and Lx$\simeq$(6.5$\pm$0.7)$\times$10^44 erg/s, for which various widely used mass proxies are measured and compared. We have identified multiple cluster-related components including a central fly-through group close to core passage with associated marginally extended 1.4GHz radio emission possibly originating from the turbulent wake region of the merging event. On the cluster outskirts we see evidence for an on-axis infalling group with a second Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) and indications for an additional off-axis group accretion event. We trace two galaxy filaments beyond the nominal cluster radius and provide a tentative reconstruction of the 3D-accretion geometry of the system. In terms of total mass, ICM structure, optical richness, and the presence of two dominant BCG-type galaxies, the newly confirmed cluster XMMU J1230.3+1339 is likely the progenitor of a system very similar to the local Coma cluster, differing by 7.6 Gyr of structure evolution., Comment: 26 pages, 14 color figures, accepted for publication in A&A
