Recently, post-socialist inner cities have been transforming through various processes of revitalisation and gentrification. The resulting physical and social contrasts of neighbouring localities lead to the spatial fragmentation of inner-city areas that may produce variegated effects on the everyday life of local residents. This paper examines how long-term residents of an inner-city neighbourhood in Prague undergoing residential and commercial gentrification have perceived and lived through its change. Specifically, it reveals how the ongoing changes influence residents' place attachment. The paper relies upon qualitative methodology using semi-structured in-depth interviews with long-term inhabitants (>20 years). Empirical findings point to a strong and stable place attachment, despite ambivalent attitudes towards recent changes related to gentrification. The effect of gentrification on place attachment appears to be relatively limited. Many residents acknowledge that gentrification has reversed the deterioration that characterised the neighbourhood in the past. Moreover, negatively perceived changes to the neighbourhood are often not attributed primarily to the gentrification process but understood as a natural part of residents' own ageing, wider societal changes, and historical development of the neighbourhood. The article highlights the need to investigate the personal, spatial and temporal contexts to comprehend the complex effects of gentrification on long-term residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCED species , *JACKFRUIT , *BACTROCERA , *ANASTREPHA , *TEPHRITIDAE , *MORACEAE , *FRUIT flies - Abstract
Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock (Diptera: Tephritidae), the carambola fruit fly, is a quarantine pest present in Brazil, restricted to the states of Amapá, Pará, and Roraima. Its dispersion to other regions of the country could cause serious socioeconomic damage. Fruits were collected from urban trees, residential backyards, and small orchards in rural and urban areas of the municipality of Oiapoque, Amapá, Brazil. A total of 240 samples (11,126 fruits; 288.8 kg) of 33 plant species (16 native and 17 introduced species) from 19 families were collected. Bactrocera carambolae was isolated from the fruits of 13 plant species. In addition, specimens of 8 Anastrepha species were collected in this study. Moreover, 5 parasitoid species (Hymenoptera; 3 Braconidae and 2 Figitidae species) associated with Anastrepha spp. were identified. Overall, this study adds 3 new records to the list of host plants for B. carambolae in Brazil (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.; Moraceae, Passiflora quadrangularis L.; Passifloraceae, and Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.; Rhamnaceae), two of them (A. heterophyllus and P. quadrangularis) new records for South America, and demonstrates new interactions between Anastrepha species and host plants in the extreme north of the state of Amapá. Notably, this is the first report of the figitid species, Aganaspis nordlanderi Wharton, in the state of Amapá. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main trip of the Salvadoran writer Roque Dalton to Eastern Europe took place in 1966 and was destined for Prague. That experience was captured in the collection of poems Taberna y otros lugares (1969). The volume analyzed as constitutes a testimony of imagination about Prague and about the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in the socio-political context of the Cold War. The book is part of the so-called "world communist literature", but it nevertheless adopts a critical and desacralizing perspective within this literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The ladybird (Hippodamia convergens) is one of the most studied predators for its effectiveness as a biological controller of important agricultural pests, while the “green citrus aphid” (Aphis spiraecola) is a frequent pest in fruit trees, with high population densities and high levels of of persistence. The objective of this work is to determine the biology, predatory capacity and behavior of H. convergens against the aphid A. spiraecola under laboratory conditions. There were three treatments to evaluate the predatory capacity, where individuals of A. spiraecola, stage II, were consumed in each larval stage of H. convergens, totaling 130, 150 and 170 aphids for treatments 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The observed life cycle was 65.5 days (treatment 1), 60.32 days (treatment 2) and 55 days (treatment 3). Consuming a total of 4726 aphids in their larval stage, with a consumption rate of 278 aphids/day. The period of pre-mating, copulation and post-mating varied from one to two days, giving rise to early laying after mating. The oviposition period was 27 days on average, with fertility and viability percentages close to 100% at 25.12°C and 63.78% RH. In this phase, a total of 485 eggs were laid, at a rate of 18 eggs/day. In addition, mortality was recorded in adults with very low values (close to 7%). Thus, it is concluded that factors such as temperature, relative humidity and consumption of aphids are determinant for the biology, predatory capacity and behavior of H. convergens. The paper presents one of the less known Latin-Polish glossaries of plant names from the Franciscan manuscript codex at present kept at the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague. Even though over a hundred years ago the codex was mentioned among interesting manuscript relics and its links with Przemyśl were suggested, there had never been a thorough analysis of it. Therefore this article is an attempt to trace the provenance of the codex, which turns out to have been from the Franciscan monastery in Przemyśl to Prague. As a result of revived interest in late-medieval and 16th-century herbals, as well as Latin-Polish glossaries of herb names, the author has decided to present that relic. What speaks in favor of that decision is the fact that of the group of 271 plant names, which have been compared with the known dictionaries from Polish codices and herbals, nearly one-third features only in the Przemyśl (Prague) manuscript, thus confirming its value. Poważniejsze sprawy dotyczące oskarżeń o magię i czary miały miejsce w Pradze dopiero w czasie wojny trzydziestoletniej. W 1624 r. cztery kobiety z Pragi-Hradczan zostały oskarżone o stręczycielstwo i uprawianie praktyk magicznych.

The epidemic theme is recurrent in Western literature, encompassing books that were written from antiquity to contemporary times. Based on this assumption, the objective of this article is to provide an overview of texts that address this issue and to study the representation of the epidemic outbreak that builds up the novel 'The plague', by the french writer Albert Camus, and it is structured based on the convergence of the stories of the adventures of Dr. Bernard Rieux, with personal stories of the following characters: Jean Tarrou, Joseph Grand, Raymond Rambert, priest Paneloux, judge Othon and the mercenary Cottard. The theoretical support for the analyzes is based on the texts by Araújo (2020), Benevides (2011), Develey (2020), Fritsch (2018), Martins (2011), Candido (2011), Marx (2020), Palud (2008), Pereira (1996), Phélip (2020), Ruffato (2020), Voisine-Jechova (2001). Drawing on the intertwining of the stories of various characters, the camusian book unveils the best and the worst in their actions, during an outbreak of bubonic plague in the city of Oran, and presents a sensitive and humanized narrative of the lives of its inhabitants immersed in a period of horror and suffering, marked by tragedy and the pain of family losses, exile and confinement at the borders of a space that is invaded by the disease, which persists over several months, and victimizes a large part of its population. Although the medieval plague epidemic had a global impact, its intensity varied from region to region in Europe. Plague rates as well as mortality rates were conditioned by climatic and geographical conditions, population density, migration, and trade activities, as well as nutritional opportunities and mental or cultural habits. If we look at Europe as a whole, then the Czech lands, the Bohemian Kingdom and the Moravian Margraviate were among the areas affected by plague epidemics in the XIVth and XVth centuries much less than medieval France, England, Italy, or the German lands of the Holy Roman Empire. The causes of the lower intensity of the plague epidemic in Bohemia and Moravia can be seen in all of the aspects mentioned above, which does not, however, mean that the impact of the plague epidemic in the Kingdom of Bohemia was not, in some regards, comparable to that in Western Europe. Research on the medieval plague epidemic in Bohemia and Moravia has struggled with a lack of relevant sources from the very beginning. The limited explanatory power of the sources has also influenced the limited interest of Czech historians in this topic. The only debate that was ever conducted about the impact of the plague epidemic in a Czech intellectual milieu concerned its possible influence on the outbreak of the Hussite revolution, or the degree of the intensity of the plague in 1380. This debate quite clearly led to the conclusion that in plague epidemics, or in their impact on pre-Hussite society, it is not possible to see a significant or even decisive cause of the outbreak of the Hussite revolution.

- Abstract
The article shows the phenomenon of overtourism in a new, previously unexposed perspective - the assessment of foreign residents of a tourist city. The research area was Prague (Czech Republic). The results of the study show that, according to residents, intensive tourist traffic is a problem that significantly reduces their quality of life in the city. Overpriced housing, crowding and the constantly rising cost of living in Prague are among the most frequently indicated hindrances. Regulations of prices and rules for short-term rentals (Airbnb), dispersal of tourist traffic, promotion of other places and the use of fines and penalties are most often suggested as expected solutions.

The Czech historian Jaroslav Bidlo (1868-1937) was one of the few Austro-Hungarian scholars who possessed vast and critical knowledge in the field of history of Slavic nations. His knowledge was based on his own experience gathered in Polish and Russian academic circles before World War I. As a professor of the Czech Charles-Ferdinand University he was involved in the so-called Neo-Slav movement, which culminated in the "Slavic Congress" in Prague in July 1908, and in the edition of a collective monograph about the Slavic nations (Slovanstvo, Prague 1912). Bidlo used these opportunities to create his own synthetic concept of Slavic history, which he later successfully developed during the interwar period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is the aim of the present essay to offer a brief albeit accurate analysis of Max Brod’s novel, a little literary gem scarcely read outside of narrow circles of specialists, as well as to explain the reasons behind the choice of David Reubeni, an almost entirely forgotten Jewish pseudo-Messiah of the XVI century, as the main character. By closely examining some of the novel’s most salient passages, this paper particularly intends to show how the historical and cultural context in which it was composed – the city of Prague in the wake of the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire, the heated debate within the Zionist movement – can provide us with a persuasive key to understanding its hidden message.

In July 1920 Jakob Rabinowitz’s narratives of his life as a writer and farmer in Palestine fascinated Franz Kafka so much that it cost him «half a night thinking of them». This paper attempts to throw light on a hitherto unknown episode in Kafka’s life in which two different paths of literature and Jewish identity delineate themselves, two paths which, according to Rabinowitz, exclude each other: the abstract-calculating path of the western Jewish writers and the path bound to the sanctity of «Reality» of future Hebrew literature in Palestine.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, Emperor Rudolf II moved the imperial court to Prague, thus transforming the city into a centre of international diplomacy and the seat of representatives of various powers. Among these were permanent papal nuncios appointed to the imperial court to act on behalf of the Pope as the head of the Catholic Church and the sovereign ruler of the Papal States. During their long and continuous presence in the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, nuncios were constantly reminded of the predominantly non-Catholic character of the city, where, moreover, one of the confessions even enjoyed full legal protection of the state. Based on correspondence of the nunciature and other related sources within the context of the development of the Czech lands, the study analyses the ways in which these papal diplomats reflected their immediate surroundings with respect to confessional differences. Primarily, however, it examines whether or not there were certain acceptable attitudes towards non-Catholics and to what degree it was possible to maintain contacts with them. Contrarily, it also identifies areas of their diplomatic activities in which, on principle, confessional boundaries could not be crossed. The study thus shows that, on the one hand, it was not realistically possible to eliminate contacts with non-Catholics altogether, and in some cases negotiations with them were even considered necessary, important or at least acceptable. On the other hand, we have witnessed efforts to clearly define and separate oneself from different confessional trends and their adherents, especially if the surrounding society could possibly interpret the contacts in an incorrect or inappropriate way, thus jeopardizing the credibility of the papal nuncio’s position as the pope’s diplomatic representative., Miejscem pobytu cesarza Rudolfa II na przełomie XVI i XVII w. była Praga, która stała się również centrum międzynarodowej dyplomacji oraz siedzibą dyplomatów z różnych mocarstw.

Abstract The mango tree (Mangifera indica L.), native to Asia, is expanding in Brazil. However, research related to phytophagous organisms and natural enemies associated with this fruit are scarce in the country. The aim of this work was to report new species of thrips-pest and natural enemies associated with mango tree inflorescence. The work was carried out in a Tommy Atkins mango orchard located in the municipality of Jardinópolis, São Paulo, Brazil. The arthropods found in malformed inflorescences were collected and identified. Frankliniella gemina Bagnall, Frankliniella distinguenda Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Haplothrips gowdeyi (Franklin) (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) thrips-pest species were recorded for the first time associated with inflorescence in mango orchards. The predators were collected in association with the phytophagous thrips.

Abstract. The genus Catasetum (Orchidaceae) currently has 194 orchid species distributed throughout Central America, northern Argentina, and southern Brazil, with Brazil as the largest producer with 103 species that may be epiphytic, terrestrial, or rupicolous. Aphids are insect pests that can damage ornamental plants such as orchids, either directly by sucking their sap or indirectly via secretions. Their secretions are attractive to pathogens and other insects, which then feed on the plant and cause a loss of flowers and leaves, spots to appear, reduced flower production, and flowering deformation. These defects can then reduce the value of the plant. When an aphid attack occurs, their ability to rapidly multiply and spread can cause major disruptions to disruptions to parts of the plant’s life cycle. In this report, we examine how the aphid Aphis craccivora Koch infests Catasetum sp. and causes tissue death, decay of the buttons and base of the stem, and stains in the flowers. Thus, owing to the damage that insects of the family Aphididae can cause ornamental plants, this study aims to report the first recorded A. craccivora attack on Catasetum sp. in Brazil. Primeiro relato de Aphis craccivora Koch in Catasetum sp. no Brasil Resumo.

The fig fly, Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970 (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is a generalist species, but economically important in the fig culture, in which it is considered a primary pest. This study aimed to verify the levels of natural infestation of Z. indianus in blackberry, strawberry guava, Physalis, guava, blueberry, strawberry and Surinam cherry fruits in southern Brazil. The indexes were calculated through the number of flies emerged per fruit and the number of flies per mass (Kg) of fruit. The highest rates of infestation (fly/Kg) were observed in blackberries (1295), strawberry guavas (1253) and Surinam cherries (1016); for the second index, (M/n) in guavas (26.17), strawberry guavas (11.87) and strawberries (10.27). Fruits collected directly from the plant were more infested compared with fruits collected from the soil, which may be due to the initial attack of Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and Anastrepha spp., pests already disseminated in the region.
