Abstract Background Nurses are responsible for implementing appropriate measures to reduce hospital infections, especially with multidrug resistant bacteria, so nursing students should learn about microbiology. This helps them to understand bacterial dissemination and infectious disease control. Because of tight schedules, however, its teaching is limited in undergraduate nursing classes in Japan. We therefore tested whether a simple short practical session in a microbiology class could help to improve undergraduate nursing students’ awareness of bacterial traits and how to prevent infections. Methods This study involved second-grade nursing students (n = 76). Two short practical sessions (a total of 3 h, across 2 days) were used to assess the effectiveness of washing or disinfection on hand bacteria in a 16-class microbiology course (total class time was 24 h, plus an exam). Hand bacteria were sampled on LB agar plates with orientation during the first half-day, and the plates examined for colonies with distinct color or morphological traits, and discussed, in the second session, a week later. Questionnaires before and after the exercise were used to assess changes in awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us connecting bacterial traits and how to prevent infections. Results The results showed that the practical increased the nursing students’ awareness of fomites (utensils) (p = 0.0115), fomites (contact-based) (p = 0.0016), habitats (body surface) (p = 0.0127), action facilitating hospital infection (p = 0.0166), and changes in physical condition caused by bacterial infections (p = 0.0136). There were no changes in word associations (p = 0.627) or habitats (inside body) (p = 0.308). Difficulty score, which is an element in questionnaire psychometric properties, tended to be close to the expected score through the practical, but not statistical significant. In addition, regardless of before or after practical, Cronbach α score, which is an indicator of the reliability among items of multi-choice questions, showed > 0.8, indicating validity of evaluation items. Thus, the student’s awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us was significantly increased as compared to those before practical in microbiology class. Conclusions The simple short practical effectively improved nursing students’ awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us in microbiology course, useful for even tight teaching schedules.

This paper results from research focused on a teacher's life story who taught science in a municipal public school located in Rio de Janeiro between the 1960s and 1990s. In (auto)biographical perspective, we used the memories of three narrators as sources to investigate the science laboratory's role in the curricula of the aforementioned educational institution. In addition to the narratives produced through interviews based on the methodology of oral history, photographs and reports circulated in newspapers were also used to elaborate the empirical evidence. As a result, we highlight the disputes around the consolidation of spaces destined for practical science classes and the progressive transformation of laboratories into places of memory based on the daily teaching experiences built in them. In conclusion, we reinforce the potential of narrative research for writing the histories of school subjects from a perspective that envisions curricular dynamics from the school interior. We argue that this type of investigation favours the recognition of teaching, valuing it, and reflecting the singularities of science teachers' work. Background: This article reports an experiment based on the measurement of the academic achievement of students submitted to self-experiments during practical classes compared with students who attended regular practical classes (control group) to assess whether this intervention could help assess the influence of self-experiments on student learning. Methods: This study involved 71 students in the second terms of the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, studying the Cell Biology unit. Experiments were conducted using the students themselves as subjects under conditions that mimic situations observed in daily life, fasting and ingestion of carbohydrates. The performance of students in health college student assessments and the degree of motivation in performing these experiments was assessed at the Anhanguera college, Brasilia, Brazil. In total, 33 students (46.5%) participated actively in the experiment and the rest only observed the experiment carried out by the first group. In Cell Biology, the students study cell types, cell components and their respective functions, during one term, with a total workload of 60 h. Results: In the test that preceded the experiment carried out in the present study, the grades of the students that participated actively and of those that only observed were not statistically different (p > 0.05). In the test applied after the experiment, both groups reached higher grades (p < 0.01), but the individuals that participated actively in the experiment obtained higher grades than those that only observed it (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that active learning, in which the students use their own organism and blood in practical classes, can increase their grades in knowledge tests. The teaching tool showed in the present study is a positive alternative for university students in health sciences.

Classes based on the merely expository model, have several mishaps in the teaching and learning process, making the act of learning difficult. In this way, the implementation of active methodologies, in which the student is the protagonist in his learning process, emerges as a rich and pleasant strategy, contributing to the critical training with the integral development of the participants. In this sense, the present article aims to use the identification of starch in natural products in an investigative methodological sequence as a tool for science teaching. The methodology consists of presenting a problem situation, creating hypotheses, experimenting, building scientific evidence and approaching reality. The experiment consists in the qualitative identification of starch in natural products (everyday food) through the use of Tincture of Iodine (2%). It is expected through this practice that there is involvement of students and discussions mediated by the teacher, which can facilitate the learning of the proposed theme, in addition to instigating students, articulating the knowledge obtained in the school environment with their daily lives. The use of scientific experimentation can provide opportunities for dialogue on scientific and social development, in addition to enhancing the traditional knowledge associated with the use of cassava, potato and açaí. The structured proposal can collaborate with teaching and learning in Science in order to help them in the implementation of socio-constructivist proposals, using accessible and low-cost materials, promoting autonomy and the development of critical thinking of the participants.

Biochemistry is a fascinating area of Biology, and it is concerned with studying the interactions of organic and inorganic molecules in the biological systems of living beings. However, it is a complex area endowed with many terms and processes, often abstract, which can be an obstacle to the context of students. In this sense, in order to overcome such obstacles, this work has as main objective to facilitate and instigate the learning of students in the discipline of Biology in high school in the proposal of an experimental activity of the enzymatic action of chymosin in milk, using simple and low-cost materials. Students will be invited to experience, discuss and discuss with the teacher, a series of experiments, allowing to contextualize and apply what was learned in theoretical classes of Biology, regarding Biochemistry, especially in matters related to proteins, enzymes, denaturation and factors that affect its catalytic efficiency. In addition to these topics, it will be possible to discuss with students the mechanism of cheese making. We believe that the practice of this experimental activity can demystify that Biochemistry is a complex area, allowing to motivate and facilitate student learning in the proposed theme, in addition to promoting the perspective of scientific experimentation. Animal Physiology is the area of Biology that is concerned with studying the functioning of the organism, however, it has many terms and processes, being a challenge for the full learning of students. Thus, nowadays, making the contextualization of this knowledge easier and more exciting is a constant challenge for the teacher. Added to this, classes based on the purely expository model can cause disinterest and attention deficit in students. To overcome such obstacles, the present work has as main objective, an experimental proposal, the students of the 2nd grade of High School, in the discipline of Biology, facilitating the contextualization of the Physiology of the human Digestive System, regarding the action of the salivary amylase enzyme (ptyalin) in bread starch, using Lugol 2%. As a result, students will realize that Lugol 2% will color the bread starch, with a very dark color, to the detriment of the complexation of the Iodine molecules of the said reagent, with the branched structure of the bread (polysaccharide). However, with the treatment that contains the piece of bread, Lugol 2% and saliva, the complexation of the Iodine molecules of the Lugol 2% reagent will not occur and its dark color will soon disappear, due to the fact that the administered saliva contains the enzyme Salivary amylase (ptyalin), which will break down the starch in bread (polysaccharide), turning it into disaccharide (maltose). Thus, it is expected that the involvement of students and discussions mediated by the teacher of the discipline, can facilitate the learning of the proposed theme, in addition to instigating students in the act of scientific experimentation. Finally, we can point out that the proposed experimental activity can be adapted to be carried out in the classroom, or at home by the students themselves, not requiring a physical laboratory structure, with glassware or expensive equipment.

In view of the current situation with a worldwide pandemic, the use of online teaching has become critical. This is difficult in the context of human anatomy, a subject contingent primarily on the use of human cadaveric tissues for learning through face-to-face practical laboratory sessions. Although anatomy has been taught using online resources including 3D models and anatomy applications, feedback from students and academic staff does not support the replacement of face-to-face teaching. At Charles Sturt University, we were obligated to cancel all classes on-campus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We ran exclusive online anatomy practical classes replacing classes usually run on campus. We designed an alternative program that consisted of twenty pre-recorded videos that were prepared in the anatomy laboratory using cadaveric tissues, and then discussed in live (and interactive) tutorials. Furthermore, innovative approaches to learning were shown and encouraged by the lecturer. Student survey responses indicated a positive response to both the anatomical videos and the innovative learning approaches. The results obtained by students showed a statistically significant increase in high distinctions and marked decrease in the amount of fail grades, compared with the previous three years (not online). The use of these videos and the encouragement of innovative learning approaches was a novel experience that will add valuable experiences for improved practice in online anatomy teaching. We propose that online anatomy videos of cadavers combined with innovative approaches are an efficient and engaging approach to replace face-to-face anatomy teaching under the current contexts.

The article is devoted to the study of the attitude of medical students to the educational process in the “remote” and “post-remote” periods. The topic of the article is extremely relevant in view of the fact that only recently yet another period of distance learning in universities has ended, due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation caused by the new coronavirus infection COVID-19. In addition, the study can also be considered relevant in view of the fact that the practical part of the educational process was relatively “weakly expressed” during the period of “distance learning” at a medical university, and now, during the period of “post-distance” learning, there is a need to catch up on the development of practical skills, which certainly should be carried out taking into account their need for mastering the curriculum and, in some cases, the wishes of students. The objects of the study were 300 students of a medical university: 100 2nd year students of the Faculty of Dentistry (Group 1), 100 3rd year students of the Faculty of Medicine (Group 2), 100 students of the 6th year of the Faculty of Medicine (Group 3). The study was based on an anonymous survey that touched upon the general questions of the attitude of future doctors to the practical and theoretical parts of the integrated learning process at the university. In addition, general satisfaction was studied with the practical and theoretical part during the period of classical, traditional education and during distance learning. An interesting component of this study was the study of student attendance at practical and theoretical classes, both during full-time education, and during periods of distance and post-distance learning. The data obtained are of interest to teachers of various departments of a medical university, as well as to head teachers of departments, since the data presented can help plan the educational process more effectively.

Genetics is one of the most fantastic areas of Biology, and is defined as the science that is concerned with studying the individual in terms of heredity. Endowed with many abstract terms and processes, this area is seen by many students as complex and tedious. In order to overcome these obstacles, with the objective of facilitating the learning of students in the discipline of Biology in High School, we propose in this article an experimental activity of DNA extraction from the kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa), using materials available at home, being these, simple and low cost. With this experimental proposal, we believe that its discussions and problematizations, measured by the teacher, can arouse students' curiosity, in addition to facilitating the learning of topics related to the structure and function of DNA, uniting theory with practice. Another important aspect is that the proposed experimental activity allows stimulating the act of scientific experimentation in students, having great importance in the disciplines of Biology and Science. It is worth noting that this experimental activity can be adapted for virtual or blended teaching, being a very common class model these days due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2). However, most of the time, it is not worked according to its importance, scope and potential. When taught exclusively theoretically, it is difficult for students to understand, due to the lack of context and abstraction. The development of the alcoholic fermentation theme using a differentiated and motivating investigative didactic sequence as a teaching and learning strategy can lead to a better understanding of this theme. The choice of this strategy is due to its cultural relevance, ease of application, low costs and reduced risks. As a complement to the investigative didactic sequence, a homemade bakery guide was prepared with recipes for breads made with fruits and or seeds of plant species native to each Brazilian region, highlighting the relevance of the plant species to the biome. The guide also brings a brief account of the history of bread, one of the most consumed foods by humanity over time. Assessment and verification of learning will be carried out continuously in all classes through an evaluation sheet and an exam with open questions Mestrado Ensino de Biologia Mestre em Ensino de Biologia CAPES 001

In an attempt to give meaning to learning in Science teaching and make it more effective and attractive, teachers must continually rethink and improve their pedagogical practices, adopting didactic instruments that allow the realization and facilitation of learning, with approaches that lead to reflection on the environmental themes, in a contextualized way. Thus, this research aimed to use carnivorous plants as didactic tools in order to awaken the environmental sensitivity of students from two schools in Quirinópolis, Goiás. Therefore, a pedagogical intervention was carried out involving the exposure of some environmental concepts and a practical activity with carnivorous plants. Before and after the execution of the pedagogical intervention, the students answered questionnaires and made drawings, which helped to verify the validity of the didactic method used. We found that the proposed activity enabled them to learn more about carnivorous plants, noting their ecological importance and the close relationship of the diversity of this group with the state of conservation of the environment in which they live, providing opportunities for reflections on our attitudes that directly impact the environment. Before getting to know the plants, the students' drawings represented them as “humanized” beings, “people-eaters”, with a dangerous character, presenting a risk to humanity. After the practical class, the drawings already illustrated the real morphological characteristics of these vegetables. Given the data, we can infer that the use of carnivorous plants is an attractive practice for the teaching of Science, especially botany, approaching several themes in a contextualized and interdisciplinary way, favoring a non-fragmented learning.

The article aims at evaluating the effectiveness of distance learning supported with the use of modern technologies and web tools for practical classes in learning the discipline “The Latin language and medical terminology” at medical universities, working with foreign students. Modern technologies and web tools for organizing distance learning have been analyzed at every stage of the practical class: the preparatory stage, the main stage and the final stage of practical class. Their didactic purpose has been determined: at the preparatory stage: – to transfer and present theoretical material; – to give useful educational tips; – to check the initial level of knowledge; – to motivate students for taking the active role in studying; at the main stage: – to present educational information in the interactive way; – to do practical training in a real-time interaction, asking and answering questions; and at the final stage: – to sum up the topic of the lesson; – to control and evaluate students’ knowledge. The comparison of distribution of students’ achievements of the discipline “The Latin language and medical terminology” during traditional (in 2018-2019 studying year) and distance learning (in 2020-2021) has been conducted. Research has shown that the use of modern technologies and web-tools for organizing distance learning provides the same academic performance of the foreign students as they are obtained during traditional learning. The disadvantages of distance learning can be seen in the bad quality of internet connection, the technical features of computers and mobile devices can be insufficient, gadgets can be broken or not functioning properly. However, the advantages of the use of modern technologies and web tools for practical classes overweight the disadvantages, furthermore the distance learning helps foreign students get knowledge at the qualified level during the Covid-2019 pandemic.,

One of the basic concepts of Biology is cytology, which although it has significant importance in the area, brings with it epistemological obstacles in its teaching, due to the complexity and abstraction to which the concept is worked, making it difficult for students to understand, mainly due to methodological limitations. In 2015, it was proposed from the theoretical model Mathematics Teacher’s Specialized Knowledge - MTSK, a theoretical model capable of describing the Biology Teacher’s Specialized Knowledge - BTSK, which encompasses knowledge of both pure Biology and the pedagogical knowledge related to a given content, so that there is a connection of knowledge for the biology teacher to work on a certain concept. In this present study, BTSK was applied as an analytical tool to characterize the specialized knowledge mobilized during a practical class of Plant Cytology. The result was an integrating vision of connections between specialized knowledge when using diverse methodologies and choices of teaching materials appropriate to the theme worked on, so as to have a significant impact on the process of teaching and learning about Plant Cytology., Uno de los conceptos básicos de la Biología es la citología, que si bien tiene una importancia significativa en el área, trae consigo obstáculos epistemológicos en su enseñanza, debido a la complejidad y abstracción a la que se trabaja el concepto, dificultando la comprensión por parte de los estudiantes, principalmente debido a limitaciones metodológicas. Teaching of pathophysiology concepts is a core feature in health professional programs, but it can be challenging in undergraduate medical/biomedical science education, which is often highly theoretical when delivered by lectures and pen-and-paper tutorials. Authentic case studies allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge but still require good imagination on the part of the students. Lecture content can be reinforced through practical learning experiences in clinical environments. In this study, we report a new approach using clinical simulation within a Human Pathophysiology course to enable undergraduate science students to see "pathophysiology in action" in a clinical setting. Students role played health professionals, and, in these roles, they were able to interact with each other and the manikin "patient," take a medical history, perform a physical examination and consider relevant treatments. Evaluation of students' experiences suggests that using clinical simulation to deliver case studies is more effective than traditional paper-based case studies by encouraging active learning and improving the understanding of physiological concepts. Background: The most effective method for teaching practical skills to healthcare professional students is unclear. Traditional teaching models perpetuate a passive learning pedagogy, whilst variation between tutors reduces target clarity. The flipped classroom model provides opportunities for enhancing student engagement. In a flipped classroom, skill explanation and demonstration is delivered online prior to a face-to-face session. The ideal model should generate an incentive for engagement while avoiding content overload. The aim of this study was to evaluate a flipped classroom teaching method that created an imperative for learner engagement among third-year physiotherapy students. Methods: The new teaching method required students to view high production-quality preparatory material and complete unsupervised peer practice as prerequisites for receiving tutor feedback. Two skills classes were taught with the new method. Evaluation data was collected using an anonymous online survey, and responses were analysed to identify key themes. Year-on-year delivery costs were modelled by manipulating key variables, such as class size and video update schedule. Results: The survey was delivered to 72 students: 75% responded after the first class, 32% after the second class. Respondents identified improved readiness for and receptiveness to feedback, and increased control over their learning. Emergent themes included a power shift towards the student, enhanced skill development and improved efficiency. Using parameters relevant for our department, video production costs were recouped after 3 years. Discussion: This teaching approach engaged students and encouraged them to prepare before attending a skills class. The flow-on effect was improved efficiency in class, which created more opportunities for practice and expert feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochemistry is a fascinating part of Biology that has as its main objective the study of the chemistry of life. However, in high school it is seen by many students as a complex and abstract area. In order to overcome such obstacles, the objective of the present work is the proposal of a practical methodological activity in order to facilitate and instigate students' learning within the discipline of Biology in High School. In this sense, the proposed practical activity uses simple and low-cost materials to approach the proteolytic identification of proteins with the use of tropical fruit juices such as pineapple, papaya, kiwi and powdered meat tenderizer, in the degradation of gelatin and beef fibers. As it is an activity that does not require the existence of a physical laboratory, students themselves can replicate it in their own homes, being highly recommended nowadays, when classes are following a virtual model, to the detriment of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Thus, we believe that the experimental methodological proposal, can facilitate students learning on the proposed theme, awakening its scientific side, promoting the discussion and problematization of hypotheses in carrying out the experiment. Finally, with this practical activity, the teacher can work with students, other subjects of Biology such as Botany and even Animal Physiology of the digestive system. The course of Pathophysiology study includes both auditoria hours (lectures and practical classes) and independent work of students. The latter makes up 38% of total hours given for Pathophysiology study. Independent work of students includes the following items: preparation for practical classes, writing reviews on different topics, preparation for current and final computer testing, study of the topics which are not discussed during lectures and practical classes. In order to assimilate the course of Pathophysiology completely students should effectively use their hours given for independent work. Unfortunately, the level of students’ independent individual work is low; it includes only learning of single facts, that is not enough for higher medical education. THE AIM OF STUDY: To propose the method of control of the effectiveness of students’ independent work. The most important part of student’s individual work is preparation for study in auditoria, because it determines the qualitative level of study during practical classes. The student should enter the class not only with the knowledge of basic sciences (Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, Normal Physiology etc.) but also with the understanding of key items of the topic of the practical class. The problem consists in the following: the teacher can’t check the level of basic knowledge in each student – there is not enough time during practical class for this procedure. In order to increase the effectiveness of individual students’ work a special workbook for the practical classes was developed at the Pathophysiology department. While preparing for practical classes students write down basic items of the topic, refresh some questions from Normal Physiology, Biochemistry and other subjects. In the beginning of the practical class the teacher controls the level of student’s preparation to the topic by checking the fulfillment of tasks in the workbook. It takes a little time, but it can guarantee that student is prepared for practical class. Such method of control makes it possible for the teacher to define basic statements of the topic, common laws of pathological processes and peculiarities of these laws display in different organs and organs’ systems during the practical class. It can also help to devote more time during the practical classes for situational problems solutions. There can be no doubt that solution of situational problems on Pathophysiology develops the abilities for intellectual modeling of pathological processes in different organs and systems, allows to use the knowledge of basic sciences and forms the basis of clinical thinking in medical students. Such skills will be helpful for the students to make correct and quick decisions in their future practical activity. CONCLUSIONS: Individual work is an integral part of medical students’ education. It’s effectiveness determines the success of Pathophysiology study. The teacher’s control upon individual work of students will improve their skills in working with educational literature and scientific publications. These skills should make the basis for high professional qualification, which is reached by regular analysis of scientific publications on their medical specialty; for the ability to use scientific discoveries in practical medicine.

Biochemistry contents are essentials to understanding brewing and students often fail to connect theory with practical applications, in this context, the discipline Beer Science was created, complimenting students` formation. The objective was to integrate the knowledge of biochemistry in beer production and evaluate the students' perception of importance of these. The discipline was given in 2017 and 2018, 24 students per class, with the prerequisite being Biochemistry approval. A didactic sequence was created, starting from the historical aspects and ending with a real beer production. Mains concepts: ph and buffer system; carbohydrates, proteins and lipids in the malt; hops oils/composition; malt and yeast enzymes; fermentative metabolism etc. A questionnaire was applied at the end of the course, evaluating students' perceptions about it, in addition, they delivered a group work simulating a production. Besides the lectures and exercises, 7 practical classes were created, involving the supplies characteristics, mashing buffer effect, temperature and pH effect on the mashing enzymes. There were 31 responses and the students felt very motivated and all considered the biochemical knowledges vital for brewing understanding, attributing greater importance to enzymes and fermentations knowledges, sequentially, to pH, buffer and carbohydrates structure and metabolism. The students emphasized the role of practical classes in order to establish the connections between biochemistry theory and beer production, highlighting the mashing comparison from a matrix of two pH and three temperatures, evaluating the starch hydrolysis with lugol, the amount of fermentable substrate by benedict reaction, and the density by light refractometer. The simulations evaluation indicated that practically all groups were able to apply theoretical knowledge. It is noteworthy that most students felt capable of brewing beer. Disciplines like this are fundamental for the connection between biochemical knowledge and practical applications, such as brewing, especially when developing practices that make this integration possible.

The Biology is a subject present for all high school students as a routine in different ways. All topics included in biology are fundamental for understanding all kinds of phenomena involved in life. One of the biggest problems to study the diversity of life, is the number of living organisms and all their characteristics, their evolutionary origins, and their contributions for the planet and the humanity. In addition, when this theme is touched, many areas need to be explained, including evolution, molecular biology and cellular biology, which makes this subject extremely complex and difficult for the students. Another problem, is that most of the teachers use traditional methodologies, based on theory and exposition, which most of the times are considered unattractive to students. Thus, this work aimed to develop a practical class, based on a table game format, in order to make the diversity of life subject more interesting to the students, and facilitate the comprehension and learning process about the topic. Furthermore, this work has compared the efficacy of a theoretical class and a practical class, using the table game, with both methodologies about the diversity of life. For testing our idea, students from three classes, second grade, from the Colégio Estadual Deputado Pedro Fernandes (State School Deputado Pedro Fernandes) have joined the study. The comparison was made after the students attending both classes, separately and together. It was verified that both methodologies were efficient for the teaching about the diversity of life. However, the table game was more enjoyable, dynamic and interesting for the students.

Background Nurses are responsible for implementing appropriate measures to reduce hospital infections, especially with multidrug resistant bacteria, so nursing students should learn about microbiology.

© 2016 The American Physiological Society.

The research focuses on the design of experimental teaching using readily available materials and simple methods to implement. It arises as an example for learning, using baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, because it has many of the metabolic pathways existing in mammalian cells. In this paper it was developed an essay that allow students to observe macroscopically the capacity of N- Acetyl cysteine (NAC) to stimulate the reducing power of yeast using indicator Methylene Blue (MB) color change.

clinical thinking ,practical class ,education - Abstract
The article addresses the specifics of teaching practical classes in the fundamentals of clinical thinking at the general surgery department as a part of the “MUMEENA” project. The author suggests a methodology of teaching such a class by discussing a clinical case where the main symptom is the pain in the ankle and foot. The goal of the class is to teach how to diagnose a disease by taking into account patient complaints, medical history and objective examination data, to propose schemes of patient’s examination and treatment, to evaluate their effectiveness and to develop recommendations as to the patient’s lifestyle and work patterns. The proposed methodology of teaching practical classes in clinical thinking engages all the students in the learning process, encouraging them to gain profound knowledge of a certain pathology as well as developing analytical skills and motivating self-improvement.

- Abstract
Background: Nurses are responsible for implementing appropriate measures to reduce hospital infections, especially with multidrug resistant bacteria, so nursing students should learn about microbiology. This helps them to understand bacterial dissemination and infectious disease control. Because of tight schedules, however, its teaching is limited in undergraduate nursing classes in Japan. We therefore tested whether a simple short practical session in a microbiology class could help to improve undergraduate nursing students' awareness of bacterial traits and how to prevent infections., Methods: This study involved second-grade nursing students (n = 76). Questionnaires before and after the exercise were used to assess changes in awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us connecting bacterial traits and how to prevent infections., Results: The results showed that the practical increased the nursing students' awareness of fomites (utensils) (p = 0.0115), fomites (contact-based) (p = 0.0016), habitats (body surface) (p = 0.0127), action facilitating hospital infection (p = 0.0166), and changes in physical condition caused by bacterial infections (p = 0.0136). Thus, the student's awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us was significantly increased as compared to those before practical in microbiology class., Conclusions: The simple short practical effectively improved nursing students' awareness of unseen bacteria inhabiting around us in microbiology course, useful for even tight teaching schedules.

Lectins are proteins highly expressed in leguminous plants, which are capable of specifically recognize and bind carbohydrates, including those found in the erythrocyte membrane. The process of cooking food rich in lectins, such as beans, peas and lentils; promote protein denaturation, losing the native structure, and consequently, the ability of carbohydrate binding. This study presents the development of a protocol for practice classes of Biochemistry, permitting an easy way to verify meaningful results, allowing the demonstration of haemagglutinating properties presented by lectins in their native structure, and lost after food thermic treatment. Different ways of cooking were used in order to demonstrate to Nutrition undergraduate students what methodologies are suitable for consumption.
