The morphology of the AgNPs was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of AgNPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed that biomolecules in the tuber extract were involved in the reduction and capping of AgNPs. The energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the AgNPs, using an energy range of 2–4 keV, confirmed the presence of elemental silver without any contamination. Further, the synthesized AgNPs were evaluated against phytopathogens such as Ralstonia solanacearum and Xanthomonas axonopodis. The AgNPs (1–4 mM) extensively reduced the growth rate of the phytopathogens. In addition, the cytotoxic effect of the synthesized AgNPs was analyzed using rat splenocytes. The cell viability was decreased according to the increasing concentration of AgNPs and 67% of cell death was observed at 100 µg/mL. This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic performance of a SnO2/TiO2‐Ni@rGO nanocomposite for tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light irradiation. The nanocomposite was precisely designed to enhance structural stability, charge transfer efficiency, and catalytic activity. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the structural integrity of the SnO2/TiO2‐Ni@rGO composite, demonstrating excellent reusability and resistance to photo‐corrosion after multiple cycles. Photocatalytic experiments revealed that the SnO2/TiO2‐Ni@rGO nanocomposite significantly outperformed individual SnO2/TiO2‐Ni and rGO catalysts, achieving a remarkable 94.6% degradation of TC within 60 min. The degradation process followed pseudo‐first‐order kinetics, with a rate constant (k) of 0.046 min−1. The Z‐scheme charge transfer mechanism facilitated efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, generating reactive oxygen species such as superoxide (•O2−) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals crucial for the oxidation of TC. Radical scavenger studies confirmed that superoxide and hydroxyl radicals were the primary active species. The SnO2/TiO2‐Ni@rGO composite also exhibited excellent reusability, maintaining high catalytic performance over four consecutive cycles. These findings suggest that the SnO2/TiO2‐Ni@rGO nanocomposite is a promising candidate for the efficient and sustainable photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants like TC, offering significant potential for environmental remediation applications. The use of macroalgae for food has been extensive in Asia historically. However, there has been a renewed interest at present in macroalgae due to its recognition as a potential carbon capture agent and a blue carbon donor besides their utility in biofuel production. Bioplastics is an umbrella term for a wide variety of polymers that can be either biobased or biodegradable, or both. Macroalgal polysaccharides and their inherent film‐forming capacity are exploited in the bioplastics industry and macroalgal polysaccharide‐based biofilms are extensively used in food packaging due to their compatibility and ease of production. Commercial macroalgae‐based bioplastics production is ongoing, with research dedicated to the development of biodegradable/compostable biofilms suitable for the food packing and biomedicine sector. This review aims to provide an overview of the polysaccharides of macroalgae that can be used to form biofilms and bioplastics. Different methods for biofilm formation are discussed along with summarizing the effect of plasticizers, the method of film formation, and biodegradability. The major source of marine macroalgal polysaccharaides are agar, alginate, carrageenan, laminarin, fucoidan, and ulvan. Different groups of macroalgae are utilized for the production of polysaccharide derived bioplatics, namely, brown algae (Padina pavonica, Ascophyllum nodosum, Laminaria japonica, Rugulopteryx okamurae, Sargassum natans, Sargassum siliquosum, Jolyna laminarioides, Gracilaria salicornia), green algae (Ulva fasciata, Halimeda opuntia, Codium fragile, Ulva intestinalis, Ulva lactuca, Ulva rigida), and red algae (Eucheuma cottonii, Porphyra sp., Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria corticata). The outcome of the review reveals that there is a vast scope for macroalgal polysaccharide‐derived bioplastics for a sustainable environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An environmentally sustainable method was used to synthesize a novel class of biopolymer‐based PVP/ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) with pomegranate peel residue extract as a biosurfactant, zinc acetate as the primary material, PVP as the stabilizing substance and sodium hydroxide as the resolving product. Significant global concerns for human health and the environment are caused by the presence of disease‐causing microbes and toxic dyes in water supplies. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) exhibit exceptional photocatalytic and antibacterial efficacy toward reactive dye and bacterial strains. The microstructure of the NPs was analyzed by employing X‐ray diffraction (XRD), with a size of 20.24 nm. Investigation using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) revealed the appearance of nanoflakes‐shaped PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles with a size ranging from 20 to 30 nm. The mixed composition of the nanoparticles was demonstrated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and an intensity of absorption at 346 nm was seen using UV–Vis spectroscopy. The PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic efficacy, destroying about 90% of the reactive MB dye. The NPs exhibited antibacterial activity against E. aerogenes, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumonia, with boundaries of inhibition of 21, 19, 18, and 16 mm, correspondingly. The results indicate that PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles may be efficiently employed for water purification, successfully removing both dye and pathogenic pollutants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, mycosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) are fabricated via Pleurotus sajor-caju mushroom extract, and their potential medical and environmental applications are demonstrated. The biosynthesized ZnONPs were assessed for their antibacterial, anticancer, and biodecolorization potential efficiency. They were also characterized and morphologically analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, Zeta potential, and GC-MS analysis. The UV visible spectrum analysis of synthesized ZnONPs analyzed outcome 354 nm was the SPR peak that the nanoparticles displayed. The characteristic Zn-O bond was indicated by a strong peak in the FT-IR study at 432.05 cm -1 . Based on XRD analysis, P. sajor-caju mediated ZnONPs were crystalline nature, with an average nano particle size of 14.21 nm and a polydispersity directory of 0.29. The nanoparticles exhibit modest constancy, as shown by their zeta potential value of - 33.2 mV. The presence of oxygen and zinc was verified by EDX analysis. The ZnONPs were found to be spherical in shape and crystalline nature structure, with smooth surface morphology and a mean particle size of 10 nm using HR-TEM and SAED analysis. The significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus (6.2 ± 0.1), S. mutans (5.4 ± 0.4), and B. subtilis (5.2 ± 0.1 mm) was demonstrated by the synthesized ZnONPs made using mushroom extract. It was discovered that when the concentration of mushroom extract was increased together with synthesized ZnONPs, the bactericidal activity increased considerably. A higher concentration of ZnONPs demonstrated superior antibacterial activity across the ZnONPs ratio tests. The in vitro cytotoxicity assay showed that ZnONPs, even at low doses, had a substantial number of cytotoxic effects on liver cancer cells (LC 50 values 47.42 µg/mL). The effectiveness test revealed that acid blue 129 was degraded. The best decolorization of acid blue 129 at 72.57% after 3 h of soaking serves as evidence for the theory that myco-synthesized ZnONPs by P. sajor-caju mushroom can function as catalysts in reducing the dye. The mycosynthesized ZnONPs from P. sajor-caju extract, and its potential for antibacterial, anticancer, and decolorization are in this investigation. Currently, one of the primary challenges that human society must overcome is the task of decreasing the amount of energy used and the adverse effects that it has on the environment. The daily increase in liquid waste (comprising organic pollutants) is a direct result of the creation and expansion of new companies, causing significant environmental disruption. Water contamination is attributed to several industries such as textile, chemical, poultry, dairy, and pharmaceutical. In this study, we present the successful degradation of methylene blue dye using g-C 3 N 4 (GCN) mixed with WO 3 and V 2 O 5 composites (GCN/WO 3 /V 2 O 5 ternary composite) as a photocatalyst, prepared by a simple mechanochemistry method. The GCN/WO 3 /V 2 O 5 ternary composite revealed a notable enhancement in photocatalytic performance, achieving around 97% degradation of aqueous methylene blue (MB). This performance surpasses that of the individual photocatalysts, namely pure GCN, GCN/WO 3 , and GCN/V 2 O 5 composites. Furthermore, the GCN/WO 3 /V 2 O 5 ternary composite exhibited exceptional stability even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. The exceptional photocatalytic activity of the GCN/WO 3 /V 2 O 5 ternary composite can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of metal-free GCN and metal oxides, resulting in the alteration of the band gap and suppression of charge recombination in the ternary photocatalyst. In this study, the freshwater microalgae Selenastrum sp. was assessed for the effective degradation of pyrene and simultaneous production of biodiesel from pyrene-tolerant biomass. The growth of algae was determined based on the cell dry weight, cell density, chlorophyll content, and biomass productivity under different pyrene concentrations. Further, lipids from pyrene tolerant culture were converted into biodiesel by acid-catalyzed transesterification, which was characterized for the total fatty acid profile by gas chromatography. Increased pyrene concentration revealed less biomass yield and productivity after 20 days of treatment, indicating potent pyrene biodegradation by Selenastrum sp. Biomass yield was unaffected till the 20 mg/L pyrene. A 95% of pyrene bioremediation was observed at 20 days of culturing. Lipid accumulation of 22.14%, as evident from the estimation of the total lipid content, indicated a marginal increase in corroborating pyrene stress in the culture. Fatty acid methyl esters yield of 63.06% (% per 100 g lipids) was noticed from the pyrene tolerant culture. Moreover, fatty acid profile analysis of biodiesel produced under 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L pyrene condition showed escalated levels of desirable fatty acids in Selenastrum sp., compared to the control. Further, Selenastrum sp. and other freshwater microalgae are catalogued for sustainable development goals attainment by 2030, as per the UNSDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) agenda. Heavy metal pollution affected the stability and function of soil ecosystem. The impact of heavy metals on soil microbial community and the interaction of microbial community has been widely studied, but little was known about the response of community assembly to the heavy metal pollution. In this study, we collected 30 soil samples from non (CON), moderately (CL) and severely (CH) contaminated fields. The prokaryotic community was studied using high-throughput Illumina sequencing of 16s rRNA gene amplicons, and community assembly were quantified using phylogenetic-bin-based null approach (iCAMP). Results showed that diversity and composition of both bacterial and archaeal community changed significantly in response to heavy metal pollution. The microbial community assembly tended to be more deterministic with the increase of heavy metal concentration. Among the assembly processes, the relative importance of homogeneous selection (deterministic process) increased significantly (increased by 16.2%), and the relative importance of drift and dispersal limitation (stochastic process) decreased significantly (decreased by 11.4% and 5.4%, respectively). The determinacy of bacterial and archaeal community assembly also increased with heavy metal stress, but the assembly models were different. The deterministic proportion of microorganisms tolerant to heavy metals, such as Thiobacillus, Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota (clustered in bin 32, bin59 and bin60, respectively) increased, while the stochastic proportion of microorganisms sensitive to heavy metals, such as Koribacteraceae (clustered in bin23) increased. Most previous studies have focused on the diversity and species richness of microbial communities, however, understanding the interactions between species and detecting key functional members of the community can help us better understand how microorganisms perform their functions. In this study, the response of the rice plant microbial community to the inoculation of cadmium-resistant endophytic bacterium R5 (Stenotrophomonas) was investigated for the first time using a microbial phylogenetic molecular ecological network. The results showed that inoculation of R5 changed the topological characteristics of the microbial network in rice plants, with the resulting network displaying stronger complexity and interaction in roots and aboveground parts, indicating that inoculation of R5 provided favorable conditions for microbial interactions. In addition, these interactions may be related to the absorption and transportation of cadmium by rice. Under the exogenous addition of R5, the network interactions of the rice plant microbial community were more inclined to cooperation. Both in the roots and aboveground parts of rice, the plant Cd content showed a decrease as the complexity and connectivity of the network increased, suggesting that complex microbial networks may be more beneficial to rice than simple microbial networks because as they were more adaptive and resistant to unfavorable environments. After inoculation with the R5 strain, the negative interaction with Cd content in rice plants increased significantly, and there might be more synergy between the microbial community and plants to jointly inhibit the absorption and transportation of Cd., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Although Tween-20 was used as an important catalyst to increase chalcopyrite bioleaching rate by acidophiles, the effect of Tween-20 on initial adhesion and biofilm development of acidophiles on chalcopyrite has not been explored until now. Herein, the role of Tween-20 in early attachment behaviors and biofilm development by Acidianus manzaensis strain YN-25 were investigated by adhesion experiments, adhesion force measurement, visualization of biofilm assays and a series of analyses including extended Derjaguin Landau Verwey Overbeek (DLVO) theory, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bacterial adhesion experiments showed that 2 mg/L of Tween-20 increased the adhesion percentage (by 8%) of A. manzaensis YN-25. Tween-20 could promote the early adhesion of A. manzaensis YN-25 by changing the Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic force to increase total interaction energy and adhesion force. Besides, the functional groups on the surface of cells (carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino functional groups) contributed to the adhesion of A. manzaensis YN-25 on chalcopyrite. Furthermore, the promotion of biofilm formation by Tween-20 was mainly attributed to the reduction of S 0 passivation layer formation and complexing more Fe 3+ on chalcopyrite surface, contributing to the erosion of chalcopyrite and creating more corrosion pits. Live/dead staining showed low live/dead ratio (ranged from 0.35 to 1.32) during the biofilm development process. Silver ion (Ag + ) is an important catalyst to improve chalcopyrite bio-dissolution, but its effects on initial adhesion behaviors and biofilm formation of acidophiles onto metal sulfide were still unknown. In this study, initial attachment behavior and adhesion force in the presence of Ag + (0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 mg/L) were comparatively analyzed for Acidianus manzaensis YN-25. Biofilm was observed by fluorescent images in the presence of 0, 1 and 2 mg/L Ag + . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) corroborated the catalytic mechanisms of Ag + to biofilm formation. Results showed that Ag + could significantly promote the attachment of cells on chalcopyrite, and the optimum concentration of Ag + was 2 mg/L with the biggest percentage of attached cells (74%), followed by 5 mg/L (71%), whereas that for the control (0 mg/L) was only 61%. Ag + significantly increased the interaction force between A. manzaensis YN-25 and chalcopyrite. Compared with the control, larger coverage of biofilm (up to 40% versus 32%) and more corrosion pits were observed on chalcopyrite in the presence of 2 mg/L Ag + . Moreover, Ag + catalyzed chalcopyrite corrosion and accelerated biofilm formation by producing a loose porous Ag 2 S layer and Ag 0 to decrease the resistivity. The live/dead ratio was small with a range of 0.31-1.38, suggesting that dead cells were a great slice during the whole life-cycle of biofilm on chalcopyrite. Chelate-assisted phytoextraction is proposed to be an effective approach for the removal of metals from contaminated soil. Organic chelators can improve this biological technique by increasing metal solubility. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of improving the phytoextraction of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) by the application of panchakavya, a traditional Indian organic formulation. Panchakavya was prepared by fermentation process in open environment using cow dunk, cow ghee, cow urine, cow milk, cow curd, tender coconut water, crude jaggery, and mashed bananas. Soil metal fraction studies indicate that the panchakavya treatment decreased (73%) water-soluble fraction of Pb. Plant growth analysis indicated the application of panchakavya to increase Zea mays fresh root weight, shoot biomass and superoxide dismutase level in Zn contaminated soil. Similarly, a significant increase in the Zn accumulation (12% in shoots and 9% in roots) was observed in panchakavya treated plants. However, when compared to control plants, panchakavya treatment significantly decreased (32% in shoots and 37% in roots) Pb accumulation in Z. mays. Microbe-assisted phytoremediation has been considered a promising measure for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted soil. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of diazotrophic plant growth-promoting Herbaspirillum sp. GW103 on growth and lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) accumulation in Zea mays L. The strain GW103 exhibited plant growth-promoting traits such as indole-3-acetic acid, siderophores, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic deaminase. Treatment of Z. mays L. plants with GW103 significantly increased 19, 31, and 52% of plant biomass and 10, 50, and 126% of chlorophyll a contents in Pb, Zn, and Pb + Zn-amended soils, respectively. Similarly, the strain GW103 significantly increased Pb and Zn accumulation in shoots and roots of Z. mays L., which were 77 and 25% in Pb-amended soil, 42 and 73% in Zn-amended soil, and 27 and 84% in Pb + Zn-amended soil. Furthermore, addition of GW103 increased 8, 12, and 7% of total protein content, catalase, and superoxide dismutase levels, respectively, in Z. mays L. plants. The results pointed out that isolate GW103 could potentially reduce the phytotoxicity of metals and increase Pb and Zn accumulation in Z. mays L. plant.

The study reports a simple, inexpensive, and eco-friendly synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) using Piper betle leaf extract. Formation of CuONPs was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy at 280 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the CuONPs were spherical, with an average size of 50-100 nm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) peak was observed approximately at 1 and 8 keV. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies indicated that the particles were crystalline in nature. CuONPs effectively inhibited the growth of phytopathogens Ralstonia solanacearum and Xanthomonas axonopodis. The cytotoxic effect of the synthesized CuONPs was analyzed using rat splenocytes. The cell viability was decreased to 94% at 300 μg/mL.

An exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing heavy metal-resistant Gram-negative bacterium was isolated from ore-contaminated soil. The selected strain was identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and designated as Halomonas sp. MG. Phylogenetic analysis of the gene sequence showed its close similarity with Halomonas sp. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the EPS had a porous structure with small pores. X-ray diffractograms showed the non-crystalline nature of the EPS. Further, FTIR spectroscopic analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl, hydroxyl and amide groups corresponding to a typical EPS.

The study was aimed to evaluate the potential of organic formulation, panchakavya, for enhancing the biological leaching of Pb and Cu in contaminated mine soil. Response surface methodology based Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the variables such as incubation time, panchakavya concentration, and agitation rate. The maximum bioleaching (Pb=64% and Cu=49%) was observed after 54 h of incubation with 10 mL panchakavya at 120 rpm. Statistics-based contour and three-dimensional plots were generated to understand the relationship between Pb and Cu bioleaching and variables. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed the presence of lactic (25.88 mg g(-1)), citric (0.14 mg g(-1)), succinic (0.14 mg g(-1)), malic (0.66 mg g(-1)), and acetic (0.44 mg g(-1)) acids in panchakavya, which may have a vital role in the removal of metals from the contaminated soil. Soil fraction studies indicate a significant increase of Pb (45%) in the exchangeable fraction of panchakavya-treated soil. XRD studies confirmed the role of panchakavya induced calcite and other minerals in the precipitation of metal ions. This study investigated the expression rate and molecular modeling of Wzb gene, a low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase, under As stress in Herbaspirillum sp. GW103. Expression of Wzb gene was quantified at transcriptional level through real-time quantitative PCR. The results showed up- and down-regulations of Wzb gene in the presence of As (50 and 100 mg/L). The maximum Wzb transcript expression was 1.2-fold after 72 h exposure to 50 mg/L of As. However, the minimum expression was 0.1-fold after 48 h exposure to 100 mg/L of As. The Wzb protein sequence was retrieved from NCBI sequence database and was used for in silico analysis. 3D structure of Wzb gene was predicted by comparative modeling using modeler 9v9. Further, the model was validated for its quality by Ramachandran plot, ERRAT, Verify 3D, and SAVES server which revealed structure and quality of the Wzb gene model.
