- Abstract
There is a growing incorporation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within remote and urban environments due to their versatility and ability to access hard-to-reach and/or congested places. UAVs offer low-cost solutions for many applications, including healthcare (e.g., medical supplies delivery) and surveillance during public events, protests, or emergencies (e.g., a nuclear accident). However, drone utilization in urban areas often relies on strict regulations to ensure safe and responsible operation. UAVs are subject to radiation-induced soft errors, and identifying the most vulnerable software and hardware components to radiation exposure is an advisable task, which is difficult to undertake. An essential task to UAVs correct operation is attitude estimation (AE). This article assesses the soft error reliability of three AE algorithms running on two resource-constrained microprocessors under neutron radiation. Results suggest that the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm provides the best Mean Work to Failure (MWTF) result for critical fault events, which is about

International audience; This paper investigates and compares the neutroninduced soft-error tolerance effectiveness of five classical attitude estimation (AE) processing approaches that are typically embedded in inertial navigation systems of autonomous things. Results of 14-MeV and thermal neutron radiation testing campaigns indicate that all the AE approaches-implemented without protection mechanisms-can be critically perturbed by single event upsets (SEUs), recovering themselves after a few seconds if sensors' measurements are continuously provided. Moreover, Kalman filter-based AE approaches presented better effectivenesses in tolerating SEUs than AE based on gradient descent.

- Abstract
Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) are very appealing for space-based applications thanks to their great flexibility, allowing reconfiguration during spaceflight. However, they are sensitive to space radiation, especially to single event upsets (SEU), which may provoke modifications to the circuit implemented in the FPGA. The COTS-2 experimental board was designed at the UGA/TIMA laboratory for assessing the use of a fault-tolerant technique in a FPGA operating in a real environment. The board was embedded in the DSX spacecraft, which followed a medium Earth orbit (MEO) from June 2019 to May 2021. This project presents the analysis and discussion of the first MEO spaceflight results of radiation effects in a FPGA protected with the classical triple modular redundancy (TMR) technique. Results show that the TMR has not been able to mitigate radiation-induced failures in multiple occasions throughout the mission., Las matrizes de puertas programables en campo (FPGA) son muy atractivas para aplicaciones espaciales gracias a su gran flexibilidad, permitiendo la reconfiguración durante el transcurso de la misión. International audience; The space industry has been launching nanosatellites in order to reduce the weight of the payload and monitor space at a lower cost benefit than a conventional satellite. In this context, the use of Attitude Estimation (AE) algorithms have become more and more important. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a processing system running an AE algorithm under an emulation-based fault injection campaign. This method is able to emulate soft errors directly in the development board's registers and allows to put in evidence critical situations, such as the wrong calculation of a reference component in space. Results and preliminary analysis suggest a predominance of matches in general-purpose registers and some failures in those called frame point, demanding extended fault injection campaign to identify further details.

Ubiquitous integrated circuit applications help the humanity to rapidly evolve by supporting electronics systems that are more and more assuming autonomous functions and decisions of important responsibility for the society. In this context, dealing with security, reliability, and power issues of integrated circuits is fundamental to ensure the operation of systems within reasonable levels of privacy, safety, and energy consumption. Exploiting body terminals of transistors in CMOS technology-based systems, this work contributes with new techniques dedicated to: (a) test circuits – just after fabrication – for detecting possible hardware Trojans inserted to maliciously compromise systems; (b) test circuits on the fly for detecting transient faults provoked by radiation effects or malicious attacks; and (c) perform body bias adaptation in systems aiming to optimize speed and power but also compensate threshold voltage alterations induced by aging, process, voltage, and temperature variations. Moreover, herein, ongoing and near-future related activities and insights are discussed as potential perspectives of this work.

International audience; This paper presents two new area-reduced controllers for bundled-data asynchronous pipelines in which the stages have long critical paths. The proposed protocols allow to reduce the number of required delay elements by using the falling edge of the asynchronous request to indicate data validity. For critical path lengths of 25 gates, the first presented scheme decreases the controller area by 48% and slightly increases the maximum throughput (2%) in comparison to a standard micropipeline implementation. The other more-concurrent scheme proposition leads to a 25% area reduction and a 40% improvement of the maximum pipeline throughput.

International audience; Radiation induced soft errors are a serious concern not only for memories but also logic circuits. Amongst the several proposed countermeasures, Bulk Built-in Current Sensors represent a promising approach with fast response times and reasonable costs in terms of area and power. However, these circuits, as well as similar sensors that measure substrate effects, are strongly susceptible to substrate noise. The intention of this work is a thorough analysis of activation mechanism and noise behavior of these sensors as well the exploration of strategies to increase noise robustness.

National audience; This work reveals additional timing difficulties by which concurrent error detection (CED) schemes can experience to deal efficiently with transients. It shows previously-unknown error scenarios where short-duration single transient faults in combinational logic circuits succeed in erroneously inverting stored results but CED schemes fail in detecting even single soft errors. The paper demonstrates that typical CED code-based schemes for protecting logic circuits are not as capable as they have been claimed whether flip-flops are used to register the error signals, and so timing conditions are suggested for a more efficient use of them.

International audience; Soft error resilience is an increasingly important requirement of integrated circuits realized in CMOS nanometer technologies. Among the several approaches, Bulk Built-in Current Sensors (BBICS) offer a promising solution as they are able to detect particle strikes immediately after its occurrence. Based on this idea we demonstrate a novel modular BBICS (mBBICS) that tackles the main problems of these in-tegrated sensors - area, leakage, and robustness. Simulations based on a predictive nanometer technology indicate competi-tive response times for high performance applications at the cost of 25 % area overhead and very low power penalty. Thereby, all simulated particle strikes that lead to transient faults could be detected. Additionally, reliability analysis proved the robustness of the proposed mBBICS against wide variations of temperature and process parameters.

National audience; This work presents a novel circuit for detecting transient faults in combinational and sequential logic. The detection mechanism features a built-in current sensor connected to the bulks of the monitored logic. The proposed circuit was optimized in terms of power consumption and enhanced with low-power sleep-mode. In addition, a calibration method for bulk built-in current sensors is presented. Overhead results indicate an increase of only 15% in power consumption which represents an improvement of almost factor 6 compared to similar existing sensor.

Recent deep-submicron technology-based ICs are significantly more vulnerable to transient faults. The arisen errors are thus also more critical than they have ever been before. This thesis presents a further novel benefit of the Quasi-Delay Insensitive (QDI) asynchronous circuits in terms of reliability: their strong natural ability to mitigate longduration transient faults that are severe in modern synchronous circuits. A methodology to evaluate comparatively the transient-fault effects on synchronous and QDI asynchronous circuits is presented. Furthermore, a method to obtain the transient-fault mitigation ability of the QDI circuits' memory elements (i.e., the C-elements) is also proposed. Finally, mitigation techniques are suggested to increase even more the Celements' transient-fault attenuation, and thus also the QDI asynchronous systems' robustness., Les technologies nanoélectroniques récentes font que les circuits intégrés deviennent de plus en plus vulnérables aux fautes transitoires.

- Abstract
This work presents a methodology for low-power embedded software design to mass-produced microprocessors. It is based on identifying the frequently accessed loops from the application program and to build a loop table in already present on-chip memory of standard microcontroller. By using the loop table, the loops are accessed from the on-chip memory and not any longer from a power expensive memory bus. Results based on benchmarks show a considerable reduction in power, without penalties in area or performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results show that the TMR has not been able to mitigate radiation-induced failures in multiple occasions throughout the mission.
