We study theoretically an array of two-level qubits moving relative to a one-dimensional waveguide. This motion can be implemented mechanically or simulated via the modulation of the couplings between the qubits and the waveguide. When the frequency of this motion approaches twice the qubit resonance frequency, it induces parametric generation of photons and excitation of the qubits. The proposed quantum optomechanical system offers a plethora of possibilities for exploring various quantum electrodynamics phenomena. However, their theoretical analysis is challenging due to the presence of quantum nonlinearity, a continuum of propagating photonic modes, and the excitation of strongly nonequilibrium qubit states, which make many conventional analytical tools inapplicable. To address these challenges, we develop a comprehensive general theoretical framework that incorporates both perturbative diagrammatic techniques and a rigorous master-equation approach. Our calculations reveal several intriguing effects, including the directional dynamical Casimir effect, where momenta of emitted photon pairs are correlated, and the waveguide-mediated collective Unruh effect, where motion drives the qubits to a nontrivial steady state that can be entangled and exhibit phase transitions. Additionally, we examine the radiation back-action on the qubit motion, which becomes particularly pronounced when subradiant modes in the qubit array are excited. Coupled electron-nuclear spins represent a promising quantum system, where the optically induced electron spin polarization can be dynamically transferred to nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Most experiments on dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) are performed at cryogenic temperatures and/or in moderate external magnetic fields, the latter approach being very sensitive to the magnetic field orientation. Here, we demonstrate that the $^{29}$Si nuclear spins in SiC can be efficiently polarized at room temperature even in the Earth's magnetic field. We exploit the asymmetric splitting of the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) lines inherent to half-integer $S = 3/2$ electron spins, such that the certain transitions involving $^{29}$Si nuclei can be clearly separated and selectively addressed using radiofrequency (RF) fields. As a model system, we use the V3 silicon vacancy in 6H-SiC, which has the zero-filed splitting parameter comparable with the hyperfine interaction constant. Our theoretical model considers DNP under optical excitation in combination with RF driving and agrees very well with the experimental data. In the case of high-fidelity electron spin polarization, the proposed DNP protocol leads to ultra-deep optical cooling of nuclear spins with an effective temperature of about 50 nK. These results provide a straightforward approach for controlling the nuclear spin under ambient conditions, representing an important step toward realizing nuclear hyperpolarization for magnetic resonance imaging and long nuclear spin memory for quantum logic gates., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate that the optical response of twisted photonic bilayers is sensitive to both spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light. Due to the transfer of the angular momenta between the light and the bilayer, optical beams with zero SAM and OAM acquire SAM upon transmission and OAM upon reflection. Our numerical calculations and the developed analytical theory show that the values of the emergent SAM and OAM depend differently on the interlayer distance and can be controlled by tuning the twist angle. The predicted phenomena do not require light absorption and are caused by the helicity-dependent light diffraction on the moir\'e pattern, which inevitably occurs in the twisted structure, and SAM-OAM conversion. The long-lived and optically addressable high-spin state of the negatively charged silicon vacancy ($\mathrm{V_{Si}}$) in silicon carbide makes it a promising system for applications in quantum technologies. Most studies of its spin dynamics have been performed in external magnetic fields applied along the symmetry axis. Here, we find that the application of weak magnetic fields perpendicular to the symmetry axis leads to nontrivial behavior caused by dynamical reorientation of the $\mathrm{V_{Si}}$ spin multipole under optical excitation. Particularly, we observe the inversion of the quadrupole spin polarization in the excited state and appearance of the dipole spin polarization in the ground state. The latter is much higher than thermal polarization and cannot be induced solely by optical excitation. Our theoretical calculations reproduce well all sharp features in the spin resonance spectra, and shine light on the complex dynamics of spin multipoles in these kinds of solid-state systems., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A single nanotube synthesized from a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) exhibits strong exciton resonances and, in addition, can support optical whispering gallery modes. This combination is promising for observing exciton-polaritons without an external cavity. However, traditional energy-momentum-resolved detection methods are unsuitable for this tiny object. Instead, we propose to use split optical modes in a twisted nanotube with the flattened cross-section, where a gradually decreasing gap between the opposite walls leads to a change in mode energy, similar to the effect of the barrier width on the eigenenergies in the double-well potential. Using micro-reflectance spectroscopy, we investigated the rich pattern of polariton branches in single MoS$_2$ tubes with both variable and constant gaps. Observed Rabi splitting in the 40 - 60 meV range is comparable to that for a MoS$_2$ monolayer in a microcavity. Our results, based on the polariton dispersion measurements and polariton dynamics analysis, present a single TMDC nanotube as a perfect polaritonic structure for nanophotonics.

We develop the analytical theory that describes simultaneous transmission of several photons through a waveguide coupled to a $\Lambda$-type atom. We show that after transmission of a short few-photon pulse, the final state of the atom and all the photons is a genuine multipartite entangled state belonging to the W class. Quantum correlations between distant particles remain enigmatic since the birth of quantum mechanics. Here we predict a novel kind of bound quantum state in the simplest one-dimensional setup of two interacting particles in a box. Paradoxically, two entangled particles become localized at the opposite edges of the box even though their interactions at large distance should seemingly play no role. Such states could be realized in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics platform, where an array of superconducting qubits or cold atoms is coupled to a waveguide. We demonstrate how long-range waveguide-mediated couplings enable interaction-induced quantum states separated by large distances. Similarly to Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model, such bound state of distant photons is immune to short-range interactions and could find applications in robust quantum information processing., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We have theoretically studied the scattering of two-photon pulses from a spatially-separated array of two-level atoms coupled to the waveguide. A general analytical expression for the scattered pulse has been obtained. The contributions of various single-eigenstate and double-excited eigenstates of the array have been analyzed. We have also calculated the dependence of the time incident photons are stored in the array on its period and the number of atoms. The largest storage times correspond to the structures with the anti-Bragg period, equal to the quarter of the wavelength of light at the atom resonance frequency $\lambda/4$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We have developed a theory of parametric photon generation in the waveguides coupled to arrays of quantum emitters with temporally modulated resonance frequencies. Such generation can be interpreted as a dynamical Casimir effect. We demonstrate numerically and analytically how the emission directionality and photon-photon correlations can be controlled by the phases of the modulation. The emission spectrum is shown to be strongly dependent on the anharmonicity of the emitter potential. Synthesized micro- and nanotubes composed of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$ are promising for many applications in nanophotonics, because they combine the abilities to emit strong exciton luminescence and to act as whispering gallery microcavities even at room temperature. In addition to tubes in the form of hollow cylinders, there is an insufficiently-studied class of twisted tubes, the flattened cross section of which rotates along the tube axis. As shown by theoretical analysis, in such nanotubes the interaction of electromagnetic waves excited at opposite sides of the cross section can cause splitting of the whispering gallery modes. By studying micro-photoluminescence spectra measured along individual MoS$_2$ tubes, it has been established that the splitting value, which controls the energies of the split modes, depends exponentially on the aspect ratio of the cross section, which varies in "breathing" tubes, while the relative intensity of the modes in a pair is determined by the angle of rotation of the cross section. These results open up the possibility of creating multifunctional tubular TMDC nanodevices that provide resonant amplification of self-emitting light at adjustable frequencies.

To establish a correlation between the spin diffusion, the spin lifetime, and the electron density, we study, employing time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, the spin polarization evolution in low-dimensional GaAs semiconductors hosting two-dimensional electron gases. It is shown that for the establishment of the longest spin-lifetime, the variation of scattering rate with the electron density is of higher importance than the fulfilling of the persistent spin helix condition when the Rashba $\alpha$ and Dresselhaus $\beta$ parameters are balanced. More specifically, regardless of the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ linear dependencies on the electron density, the spin relaxation rate is determined by the spin diffusion coefficient that depends on electron density nonmonotonously. The longest experimental spin-lifetime occurs at an electron density, corresponding to the transition from Boltzmann to Fermi-Dirac statistics, which is several times higher than that when the persistent spin helix is expected. The ability to control the direction of scattered light in integrated devices is crucial to provide the flexibility and scalability for a wide range of on-chip applications, such as integrated photonics, quantum information processing and nonlinear optics. In the optical and microwave frequency ranges tunable directionality can be achieved by applying external magnetic fields, that modify optical selection rules, by using nonlinear effects, or interactions with vibrations. However, these approaches are less suitable to control propagation of microwave photons inside integrated superconducting quantum devices, that is highly desirable. Here, we demonstrate tunable directional scattering with just two transmon qubits coupled to a transmission line based on periodically modulated transition frequency. By changing the symmetry of the modulation, governed by the relative phase between the local modulation tones, we achieve directional forward or backward photon scattering.

We develop a general theoretical framework to dynamically engineer quantum correlations in the frequency-comb emission from an array of superconducting qubits in a waveguide, rigorously accounting for the temporal modulation of the qubit resonance frequencies. We demonstrate, that when the resonance frequencies of the two qubits are periodically modulated with a $\pi$ phase shift, it is possible to realize simultaneous bunching and antibunching in cross-correlations of the scattered photons from different sidebands. Our approach, based on the dynamical conversion between the quantum excitations with different parity symmetry, is quite universal. It can be used to control two-particle correlations in generic dynamically modulated dissipative quantum systems.

We study theoretically interaction of optically-pumped excitons with acoustic waves in planar semiconductor nanostructures in the strongly nonlinear regime. We start with the multimode optomechanical lasing regime for optical pump frequency {above} the exciton resonance and demonstrate broadband chaotic-like lasing spectra. We also predict formation of propagating optomechanical domain walls driven by optomechanical nonlinearity for the optical pump {below} the exciton resonance. Stability conditions for the domain walls are examined analytically and are in agreement with direct numerical simulations. Optically controllable solid-state spin qubits are one of the basic building blocks for applied quantum technology. Efficient extraction of emitted photons and a robust spin-photon interface are crucial for the realization of quantum sensing protocols and essential for the implementation of quantum repeaters. Though silicon carbide (SiC) is a very promising material platform hosting highly-coherent silicon vacancy spin qubits, a drawback for their practical application is the unfavorable ordering of the electronic levels in the optically excited state. Here, we demonstrate that due to polytypism of SiC, a particular type of silicon vacancy qubits in 6H-SiC possesses an unusual inverted fine structure. This results in the directional emission of light along the hexagonal crystallographic axis, making photon extraction more efficient and integration into photonic structures technologically straightforward. From the angular polarization dependencies of the emission, we reconstruct the spatial symmetry and determine the optical selection rules depending on the local deformation and spin-orbit interaction, enabling direct implementation of robust spin-photon entanglement schemes. Furthermore, the inverted fine structure leads to unexpected behavior of the spin readout contrast. It vanishes and recovers with lattice cooling due to two competing optical spin pumping mechanisms. We study theoretically subradiant states in the array of atoms coupled to photons propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide focusing on the strongly interacting many-body regime with large excitation fill factor $f$. We introduce a generalized many-body entropy of entanglement based on exact numerical diagonalization followed by a high-order singular value decomposition. This approach has allowed us to visualize and understand the structure of a many-body quantum state. We reveal the breakdown of fermionized subradiant states with increase of $f$ with emergence of short-ranged dimerized antiferromagnetic correlations at the critical point $f=1/2$ and the complete disappearance of subradiant states at $f>1/2$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study theoretically optomechanical interactions in a semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum well under the optical pumping by a Bessel beam, carrying a non-zero orbital momentum. Due to the transfer of orbital momentum from light to phonons, the microcavity can act as an acoustic circulator: it rotates the propagation direction of the incident phonon by a certain angle clockwise or anticlockwise. Due to the optomechanical heating and cooling effects, the circulator can also function as an acoustic laser emitting sound with nonzero angular momentum. Hybrid spin-optomechanical quantum systems offer high flexibility, integrability and applicability for quantum science and technology. Particularly, on-chip surface acoustic waves (SAWs) can efficiently drive spin transitions in the ground states (GSs) of atomic-scale, color centre qubits, which are forbidden in case of the more frequently used electromagnetic fields. Here, we demonstrate that strain-induced spin interactions within their optically excited state (ES) can exceed by two orders of magnitude the ones within the GS. This gives rise to novel physical phenomena, such as the acoustically induced coherent spin trapping (CST) unvealed here. The CST manifests itself as the spin preservation along one particular direction under the coherent drive of the GS and ES by the same acoustic field. This review describes the emerging field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED) concerned with the interaction of photons propagating in a waveguide with localized quantum emitters. The collective emitter-photon interactions can lead to both enhanced and suppressed coupling compared to the case of independent emitters. Here, we focus on guided photons and ordered arrays, leading to super- and sub-radiant states, bound photon states and quantum correlations with promising quantum information applications. We highlight recent groundbreaking experiments performed with different quantum platforms, including cold atoms, superconducting qubits, semiconductor quantum dots, quantum solid-state defects, and we provide a comprehensive introduction to theoretical techniques to study the interactions and dynamics of these emitters and the photons in the waveguide., Comment: 64 pages, 36 figures, 2 tables. We report the influence of static mechanical deformation on the zero-field splitting of silicon vacancies in silicon carbide at room temperature. We use AlN/6H-SiC heterostructures deformed by growth conditions and monitor the stress distribution as a function of distance from the heterointerface with spatially-resolved confocal Raman spectroscopy. The zero-field splitting of the V1/V3 and V2 centers in 6H-SiC, measured by optically-detected magnetic resonance, reveal significant changes at the heterointerface compared to the bulk value. This approach allows unambiguous determination of the spin-deformation interaction constant, which turns out to be $0.75 \, \mathrm{GHz}$ for the V1/V3 centers and $0.5 \, \mathrm{GHz}$ for the V2 centers. We investigated multilayer plates made by exfoliation from a high-quality MoS$_2$ crystal and reveal that they represent a new object - van der Waals homostructure consisting of a bulk core and a few detached monolayers on its surface. This architecture comprising elements with different electron band structure leads to specific luminescence, when the broad emission band from the core is cut by the absorption peaks of strong exciton resonances in the surface monolayers. The exfoliated flakes exhibit strong optical anisotropy. We have observed a conversion of normally incident light polarization to $15\%$ in transmission geometry. This background effect is due to fluctuations of the c axis relative to the normal, whereas the pronounced resonance contribution is explained by the polarization anisotropy of excitons localized in the stripes of dissected surface monolayers.

We study theoretically quantum states of a pair of photons interacting with a finite periodic array of two-level atoms in a waveguide. Our calculation reveals two-polariton eigenstates that have a highly irregular wave-function in real space. This indicates the Bethe ansatz breakdown and the onset of quantum chaos, in stark contrast to the conventional integrable problem of two interacting bosons in a box. We identify the long-range waveguide-mediated coupling between the atoms as the key ingredient of chaos and nonintegrability. We study theoretically the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(t)$ for photons transmitted through a periodic Bragg-spaced array of superconducting qubits, coupled to a waveguide. We demonstrate that photon bunching and anti-bunching persist much longer than both radiative and non-radiative lifetimes of a single qubit. The photon-photon correlations become immune to non-radiative dissipation due to the Borrmann effect, that is a strongly non-Markovian collective feature of light-qubit coupling inherent to the Bragg regime. We consider theoretically light scattering by a resonant layer that periodically moves in real space. At small frequencies of motion the scattered light spectrum reveals the frequency shift that is governed by the Doppler effect. At higher motion frequencies, the scattered light spectra acquire sidebands stemming from the Raman effect. We report on acoustically driven spin resonances in atomic-scale centers in silicon carbide at room temperature. Specifically, we use a surface acoustic wave cavity to selectively address spin transitions with magnetic quantum number differences of $\pm$1 and $\pm$2 in the absence of external microwave electromagnetic fields. These spin-acoustic resonances reveal a non-trivial dependence on the static magnetic field orientation, which is attributed to the intrinsic symmetry of the acoustic fields combined with the peculiar properties of a half-integer spin system. We develop a microscopic model of the spin-acoustic interaction, which describes our experimental data without fitting parameters. Furthermore, we predict that traveling surface waves lead to a chiral spin-acoustic resonance, which changes upon magnetic field inversion. Topological quantum phases underpin many concepts of modern physics. While the existence of disorder-immune topological edge states of electrons usually requires magnetic fields, direct effects of magnetic field on light are very weak. As a result, demonstrations of topological states of photons employ synthetic fields engineered in special complex structures or external time-dependent modulations. Here, we reveal that the quantum Hall phase with topological edge states, spectral Landau levels and Hofstadter butterfly can emerge in a simple quantum system, where topological order arises solely from interactions without any fine-tuning. Such systems, arrays of two-level atoms (qubits) coupled to light being described by the classical Dicke model, have recently been realized in experiments with cold atoms and superconducting qubits. We study topological properties of bound pairs of photons in spatially-modulated qubit arrays (arrays of two-level atoms) coupled to a waveguide. While bound pairs behave like Bloch waves, they are topologically nontrivial in the parameter space formed by the center-of-mass momentum and the modulation phase, where the latter plays the role of a synthetic dimension. In a superlattice where each unit cell contains three two-level atoms (qubits), we calculate the Chern numbers for the bound-state photon bands, which are found to be $(1,-2,1)$. For open boundary condition, we find exotic topological bound-pair edge states with radiative losses. Unlike the conventional case of the bulk-edge correspondence, these novel edge modes not only exist in gaps separating the bound-pair bands, but they also may merge with and penetrate into the bands. We predict the existence of a novel interaction-induced spatial localization in a periodic array of qubits coupled to a waveguide. This localization can be described as a quantum analogue of a self-induced optical lattice between two indistinguishable photons, where one photon creates a standing wave that traps the other photon. We develop a microscopic theory of spin noise in solid-state systems at electron paramagnetic resonance, when the spin dynamics is driven by static and radio-frequency (RF) magnetic fields and the stochastic effective magnetic field stemming from the interaction with environment. The RF field splits the peaks in the power spectrum of spin noise into the Mollow-like triplets and also gives rise to additional spin-spin correlations which oscillate in the absolute time at the RF frequency and the double frequeqncy. Even in systems with strong inhomogeneous broadening, the spin noise spectrum contains narrow lines insensitive to the dispersion of the effective $g$-factors. We develop a rigorous theoretical approach for analyzing inelastic scattering of photon pairs in arrays of two-level qubits embedded in a waveguide. Our analysis reveals strong enhancement of the scattering when the energy of incoming photons resonates with the double-excited subradiant states. We identify the role of different double-excited states in the scattering such as superradiant, subradiant, and twilight states, being a product of single-excitation bright and subradiant states. Importantly, the N-excitation subradiant states can be engineered only if the number of qubits exceeds 2N. Both the subradiant and twilight states can generate long-lived photon-photon correlations, paving the way to a storage and processing of quantum information.

We predict that illumination by a plane electromagnetic wave of optically resonant membranes, such as graphene or monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, directly affects their mechanical tension. The induced optomechanical tension is anisotropic and, depending on the spectral detuning from the resonance, can be both positive and negative. In the latter case, it can overcome the bending rigidity of the membrane leading to transition to the crumpled phase. We measure low-temperature micro-photoluminescence spectra along a MoS$_2$ nanotube, which exhibit the peaks of the optical whispering gallery modes below the exciton resonance. The variation of the position and intensity of these peaks is used to quantify the change of the nanotube geometry. The width of the peaks is shown to be determined by the fluctuations of the nanotube wall thickness and propagation of the detected optical modes along the nanotube. We analyse the dependence of the energies of the optical modes on the wave vector along the nanotube axis and demonstrate the potential of the high-quality nanotubes for realization of the strong coupling between exciton and optical modes with the Rabi splitting reaching 400 meV. Hybrid spin-mechanical systems are a promising platform for future quantum technologies. Usually they require application of additional microwave fields to project integer spin to a readable state. We develop a theory of optically detected spin-mechanical resonance associated with half-integer spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) membranes. It occurs when a spin resonance frequency matches a resonance frequency of a mechanical mode, resulting in a shortening of the spin relaxation time through resonantly enhanced spin-phonon coupling. The effect can be detected as an abrupt reduction of the photoluminescence intensity under optical pumping without application of microwave fields. We propose all-optical protocols based on such spin-mechanical resonance to detect external magnetic fields and mass with ultra-high sensitivity. We also discuss room-temperature nonlinear effects under strong optical pumping, including spin-mediated cooling and heating of mechanical modes. Quantum bit or qubit is a two-level system, which builds the foundation for quantum computation, simulation, communication and sensing. Quantum states of higher dimension, i.e., qutrits (D = 3) and especially qudits (D = 4 or higher), offer significant advantages. Particularly, they can provide noise-resistant quantum cryptography, simplify quantum logic and improve quantum metrology. Flying and solid-state qudits have been implemented on the basis of photonic chips and superconducting circuits, respectively. However, there is still a lack of room-temperature qudits with long coherence time and high spectral resolution. The silicon vacancy centers in silicon carbide (SiC) with spin S = 3/2 are quite promising in this respect, but until now they were treated as a canonical qubit system. Here, we apply a two-frequency protocol to excite and image multiple qudit modes in a SiC spin ensemble under ambient conditions. Strikingly, their spectral width is about one order of magnitude narrower than the inhomogeneous broadening of the corresponding spin resonance. By applying Ramsey interferometry to these spin qudits, we achieve a spectral selectivity of 600 kHz and a spectral resolution of 30 kHz. As a practical consequence, we demonstrate absolute DC magnetometry insensitive to thermal noise and strain fluctuations.

Tunable directional scattering is of paramount importance for operation of antennas, routing of light, and design of topologically protected optical states. For visible light scattered on a nanoparticle the directionality could be provided by the Kerker effect, exploiting the interference of electric and magnetic dipole emission patterns. However, magnetic optical resonances in small sub-100-nm particles are relativistically weak. Here, we predict inelastic scattering with the unexpectedly strong tunable directivity up to 5.25 driven by a trembling of small particle without any magnetic resonance. The proposed optomechanical Kerker effect originates from the vibration-induced multipole conversion. We also put forward an optomechanical spin Hall effect, the inelastic polarization-dependent directional scattering. Our results uncover an intrinsically multipolar nature of the interaction between light and mechanical motion. They apply to a variety of systems from cold atoms to two-dimensional materials to superconducting qubits and can be instructive to engineer chiral optomechanical coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 1 table + Methods

We study the optical properties of MoS$_2$ nanotubes (NTs) with walls comprising dozens of monolayers. We reveal strong peaks in micro-photoluminescence ($\mu$-PL) spectra when detecting the light polarized along the NT axis. We develop a model describing the optical properties of the nanotubes acting as optical resonators which support the quantization of whispering gallery modes inside the NT wall. The experimental observation of the resonances in $\mu$-PL allows one to use them as a contactless method of the estimation of the wall width. Time-resolved Kerr-rotation microscopy explores the influence of optical doping on the persistent spin helix in a [001]-grown CdTe quantum well at cryogenic temperatures. Electron spin diffusion dynamics reveal a momentum-dependent effective magnetic field providing SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry, consistent with kinetic theory. The Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit coupling parameters are extracted independently from rotating the spin helix with external magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the effective magnetic field. Most importantly, a non-uniform spatiotemporal precession pattern is observed. The kinetic theory framework of spin diffusion allows for modeling of this finding by incorporating the photocarrier density into the Rashba ($\alpha$) and the Dresselhaus ($\beta_3$) parameters. Corresponding calculations are further validated by an excitation-density dependent measurement. We show that the stacks of two-dimensional semiconductor crystals with the chiral packing exhibit optical activity and circular dichroism. We develop a microscopic theory of these phenomena in the spectral range of exciton transitions which takes into account the spin-dependent hopping of excitons between the layers in the stack and the interlayer coupling of excitons via electromagnetic field. For the stacks of realistic two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides, we calculate the rotation and ellipticity angles of radiation transmitted through such structures. The angles are resonantly enhanced at the frequencies of both bright and dark exciton modes in the stack. Electron spin transport and dynamics are investigated in a single, high-mobility, modulation-doped, GaAs quantum well using ultrafast two-color Kerr-rotation micro-spectroscopy, supported by qualitative kinetic theory simulations of spin diffusion and transport. Evolution of the spins is governed by the Dresselhaus bulk and Rashba structural inversion asymmetries, which manifest as an effective magnetic field that can be extracted directly from the experimental coherent spin precession. A spin precession length L-SOI is defined as one complete precession in the effective magnetic field. It is observed that application of (a) an out-of-plane electric field changes the spin decay time and L-SOI through the Rashba component of the spin-orbit coupling, (b) an in-plane magnetic field allows for extraction of the Dresselhaus and Rashba parameters, and (c) an in-plane electric field markedly modifies both the L-SOI and diffusion coefficient. While simulations reproduce the main features of the experiments, the latter results exceed the corresponding simulations and extend previous studies of drift-current-dependent spin-orbit interactions., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We propose to use 2D monolayers possessing optical gaps and high exciton oscillator strength as an element of one-dimensional resonant photonic crystals. We demonstrate that such systems are promising for the creation of effective and compact delay units. In the transition-metal-dichalcogenide-based structures where the frequencies of Bragg and exciton resonances are close, a propagating short pulse can be slowed down by few picoseconds while the pulse intensity decreases only 2 - 5 times. This is realized at the frequency of the "slow" mode situated within the stopband. The pulse retardation and attenuation can be controlled by detuning the Bragg frequency from the exciton resonance frequency., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We discuss the fine structure and spin dynamics of spin-3/2 centers associated with silicon vacancies in silicon carbide. The centers have optically addressable spin states which makes them highly promising for quantum technologies. The fine structure of the spin centers turns out to be highly sensitive to mechanical pressure, external magnetic and electric fields, temperature variation, etc., which can be utilized for efficient room-temperature sensing, particularly by purely optical means or through the optically detected magnetic resonance. We discuss the experimental achievements in magnetometry and thermometry based on the spin state mixing at level anticrossings in an external magnetic field and the underlying microscopic mechanisms. Zitterbewegung is a striking consequence of relativistic quantum mechanics which predicts that free Dirac electrons exhibit a rapid trembling motion even in the absence of external forces. The trembling motion of an electron results from the interference between the positive and the negative-energy solutions of the Dirac equation, separated by one MeV, leading to oscillations at extremely high frequencies which are out of reach experimentally. Recently, it was shown theoretically that electrons in III-V semiconductors are governed by similar equations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. The small energy splittings up to meV result in Zitterbewegung at much smaller frequencies which should be experimentally accessible as an AC current. Here, we demonstrate the Zitterbewegung of electrons in a solid. We show that coherent electron Zitterbewegung can be triggered by initializing an ensemble of electrons in the same spin states in strained n-InGaAs and is probed as an AC current at GHz frequencies. Its amplitude is shown to increase linearly with both the spin-orbit coupling strength and the Larmor frequency of the external magnetic field. The latter dependence is the hallmark of the dynamical generation mechanism of the oscillatory motion of the Zitterbewegung. Our results demonstrate that relativistic quantum mechanics can be studied in a rather simple solid state system at moderate temperatures. We develop a rigorous theoretical framework to describe light-sound interaction in the laser-pumped periodic multiple-quantum-well structure accounting for the hybrid phonon-polariton excitations, termed as phonoritons. We show that phonoritons exhibit the pumping-induced synthetic magnetic field in the artificial "coordinate-energy" space, that makes transmission of left- and right- going waves different. We demonstrate that the parity-time symmetry for sound is realized in the laser-pumped multiple-quantum-well structure. Breaking of the parity-time symmetry for the phonons with wave vectors corresponding to the Bragg condition makes the structure a highly-selective acoustic wave amplifier. We uncover the fine structure of a silicon vacancy in isotopically purified silicon carbide (4H-$^{28}$SiC) and find extra terms in the spin Hamiltonian, originated from the trigonal pyramidal symmetry of this spin-3/2 color center. These terms give rise to additional spin transitions, which are otherwise forbidden, and lead to a level anticrossing in an external magnetic field. We observe a sharp variation of the photoluminescence intensity in the vicinity of this level anticrossing, which can be used for a purely all-optical sensing of the magnetic field. We achieve dc magnetic field sensitivity of 87 nT Hz$^{-1/2}$ within a volume of $3 \times 10^{-7}$ mm$^{3}$ at room temperature and demonstrate that this contactless method is robust at high temperatures up to at least 500 K. As our approach does not require application of radiofrequency fields, it is scalable to much larger volumes. The photon blockade is a hallmark of quantum light transport through a single two-level system that can accomodate only one photon. Here, we theoretically show that two-photon transmission can be suppressed even for a seemingly classical system with large number of quantum dots in a cavity when the biexciton nonlinearity is taken into account. We reveal the nonmonotonous dependence of the second-order correlation function of the transmitted photons on the biexciton binding energy.
