Abstract: This broad review summarizes recent advances and "hot"research topics in nanophononics and elastic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials based on results presented by the authors at the EUROMECH 610 Colloquium held on April 25-27, 2022 in Benicássim, Spain. The key goal of the colloquium was to highlight important developments in these areas, particularly new results that emerged during the last two years. This work thus presents a "snapshot"of the state-of-the-art of different nanophononics- and metamaterial-related topics rather than a historical view on these subjects, in contrast to a conventional review article. The introduction of basic definitions for each topic is followed by an outline of design strategies for the media under consideration, recently developed analysis and implementation techniques, and discussions of current challenges and promising applications. This review, while not comprehensive, will be helpful especially for early-career researchers, among others, as it offers a broad view of the current state-of-the-art and highlights some unique and flourishing research in the mentioned fields, providing insight into multiple exciting research directions., Nanophotonics, 12 (4), ISSN:2192-8614

Abstract: Hierarchy provides unique opportunities for the design of advanced materials with superior properties that arise from architecture, rather than from constitutive material response. Contrary to the quasi-static regime, where the potential of hierarchy has been largely explored, its role in vibration mitigation and wave manipulation remains elusive. So far, the majority of the studies concerning hierarchical elastic metamaterials have proposed a self-similar repetition of a specific unit cell at multiple scale levels, leading to the activation of the same bandgap mechanism at different frequencies. On the contrary, here, we show that by designing non self-similar hierarchical geometries allows us to create periodic structures supporting multiple, highly attenuative and broadband bandgaps involving (independently or simultaneously) different scattering mechanisms, namely, Bragg scattering, local resonance and/or inertial amplification, at different frequencies. The type of band gap mechanism is identified and discussed by examining the vibrational mode shapes and the imaginary component of the wavenumber in the dispersion diagram of the unit cell. We also experimentally confirm this by performing measurements in the lowest frequency regime on a 3D printed structure. Abstract: International audience; Relying on preliminary experiments, in this work we design a tunable 850 nm laser based on a hybrid combination of a liquid crystal micro-cell with nanoimprinted grating and an electrically-pumped GaAs half-VCSEL. The optical design is challenging due to the inherent tolerances of this hybrid technology, the presence of metals in the cavity and the need for single fundamental extraordinary mode emission over the whole tuning range. To ensure proper operation, we introduce for the first time the new concept of anisotropic transverse confinement design. The overall performance is verified by our multiphysics VCSEL suite. Beyond tuning features, we predict side mode suppression ratio and optical power under all working conditions, comparing the performance of liquid crystals with different clearing temperatures. The results qualifies these lasers as viable tunable sources with interesting performance and complementary features compared to other technologies.

Abstract: In this work, we present an investigation of the wind in the solar corona that has been initiated by observations of the resonantly scattered ultraviolet emission of the coronal plasma obtained with UVCS-SOHO, designed to measure the wind outflow speed by applying Doppler dimming diagnostics. Metis on Solar Orbiter complements the UVCS spectroscopic observations that were performed during solar activity cycle 23 by simultaneously imaging the polarized visible light and the H I Lyman-α corona in order to obtain high spatial and temporal resolution maps of the outward velocity of the continuously expanding solar atmosphere. The Metis observations, taken on May 15, 2020, provide the first H I Lyman-α images of the extended corona and the first instantaneous map of the speed of the coronal plasma outflows during the minimum of solar activity and allow us to identify the layer where the slow wind flow is observed. The polarized visible light (580–640 nm) and the ultraviolet H I Lyα (121.6 nm) coronal emissions, obtained with the two Metis channels, were combined in order to measure the dimming of the UV emission relative to a static corona. This effect is caused by the outward motion of the coronal plasma along the direction of incidence of the chromospheric photons on the coronal neutral hydrogen. The plasma outflow velocity was then derived as a function of the measured Doppler dimming. The static corona UV emission was simulated on the basis of the plasma electron density inferred from the polarized visible light. This study leads to the identification, in the velocity maps of the solar corona, of the high-density layer about ±10° wide, centered on the extension of a quiet equatorial streamer present at the east limb – the coronal origin of the heliospheric current sheet – where the slowest wind flows at about 160 ± 18 km s−1 from 4 R⊙ to 6 R⊙. Beyond the boundaries of the high-density layer, the wind velocity rapidly increases, marking the transition between slow and fast wind in the corona.

Abstract: Deep Learning, and in particular its implementation using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), is currently one of the most intensively and widely used predictive models for safety-critical applications like autonomous driving assistance on pedestrian, objects and structures recognition. Today, ensuring the reliability of these innovations is becoming very important since they involve human lives. One of the peculiarities of the CNNs is the inherent resilience to errors due to the iterative nature of the learning process. In this work we present a method-ology to evaluate the impact of permanent faults affecting CNN exploited for automotive applications. Such a characterization is performed through a fault injection enviroment built upon on the darknet open source DNN framework. Results are shown about fault injection campaigns where permanent faults are affecting the connection weights in the LeNet and Yolo; the behavior of the corrupted CNN is classified according to the criticality of the introduced deviation.

Abstract: International audience; Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are over-stressed to accelerate High-Performance Computing applications and are used to accelerate Deep Neural Networks in several domains where they have a life expectancy of many years. These conditions expose the GPUs hardware to (premature) aging, causing permanent faults to arise after the usual end-of-manufacturing test. Techniques to assess the impact of permanent faults in GPUs are then strongly required, thus allowing to estimate the reliability risk and to possibly mitigate it. In this paper, we present a method to evaluate the effects of permanent faults affecting the GPU scheduler and control units, which are the most peculiar and stressed resources, along with the first figures that allow quantifying these effects. We characterize over 5.83x10^5 permanent fault effects in the scheduler and controllers of a gate-level GPU model. Then, we map the observed error categories in software by instrumenting the code of 13 applications and two convolutional neural networks, injecting more than 1.65x10^5 permanent errors. Our two-level fault injection strategy reduces the evaluation time from hundreds of years of gate-level evaluation to hundreds of hours.We found that faults in the GPU parallelism management units can modify the opcode, the addresses, and the status of thread(s) and warp(s). The large majority (up to 99%) of these hardware permanent errors impacts the running software execution. Errors affecting the instruction operation or resource management hang the code, while 45% of errors in the parallelism management or control-flow induce silent data corruptions.

Abstract: International audience; Deep Learning (DL) applications are gaining increasing interest in the industry and academia for their outstanding computational capabilities. Indeed, they have found successful applications in various areas and domains such as avionics, robotics, automotive, medical wearable devices, gaming; some have been labeled as safety-critical, as system failures can compromise human life. Consequently, DL reliability is becoming a growing concern, and efficient reliability assessment approaches are required to meet safety constraints. This paper presents a survey of the main DL reliability assessment methodologies, focusing mainly on Fault Injection (FI) techniques used to evaluate the DL resilience. The article describes some of the most representative state-of-the-art academic and industrial works describing FI methodologies at different levels of abstraction. Finally, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for carrying out safety analyses.

Abstract: International audience; Firms adopt Big data solutions, but a body of evidence suggests that Big data in some cases may create more problems than benefits. We hypothesize that the problem may not be Big data in itself but rather too much of it. These kinds of effects echo the Too-Much-of-a-Good-Thing (TMGT) effect in the field of management. This theory also seems meaningful and applicable in management information systems. We contribute to assessments of the TMGT effect related to Big data by providing an answer to the following question: When does the extension of Big data lead to value erosion? We collected data from a sample of medium and large firms and established a set of regression models to test the relationship between Big data and value creation, considering firm size as a moderator. The data confirm the existence of both an inverted U-shaped curve and firm size moderation. These results extend the applicability of the TMGT effect theory and are useful for firms exploring investments in Big data.

Abstract: Digital Twins constitute a class of innovative data-intensive network-based computing solutions based on real-time interactive simulations of physical systems-Physical Twins-in multiple domains, representing and predicting the states of complex systems (from bacteria to cities). However, the variety of Digital Twins proposed in literature makes difficult to shape a general definition for this class of computational tools (possibly merging with phygital systems). On the other hand, this is a sign of the versatility of Digital Twins, in both their own capability to solve heterogeneous problems in real world and to inspire novel approaches to handle the uncertainty in complex systems. Such advantages are also explored in fields like healthcare, especially considering domains of Digital Health and mHealth. Indeed, major efforts in research are pushing the methodological and technological boundaries of biomedical sciences, translational research, and precision medicine. Such efforts should be pursued for implementing Digital Twins helping, for instance, the humancentric optimization of the resources allocation in healthcare settings (hospitals, homes, and cities). This chapter will present the opportunity and the ethical issues of using these systems for foreseeing the future states of a person or a population (a need that certainly was highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic) or a system including a medical device and its user.

Abstract: Building on the Knowledge Spillover Theory of Entrepreneurship (KSTE) and the Digital Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (DEE) approach, this paper investigates the relationship between the local availability of digital knowledge (i.e., digital knowledge spillovers and digital skill endowment) and the creation of digital innovative start-ups in Italian NUTS3 regions. The obtained results show that both elements are significant for the creation of digital innovative start-ups at the province level, and a two-fold contribution has been made: from a theory perspective, an extension of KSTE to digital settings has been used to assess the relevance of geographical issues, while, from a DEE perspective, the study contributes by empirically analyzing the specific characteristics of the local ecosystem that can affect the creation of digital innovative start-ups. Finally, we discuss the implications for entrepreneurship and technology policy at the local level.

Abstract: In contemporary society, social networks accelerate decision dynamics causing a rapid switch of opinions in a number of fields, including the prevention of infectious diseases by means of vaccines. This means that opinion dynamics can nowadays be much faster than the spread of epidemics. Hence, we propose a Susceptible-Infectious-Removed epidemic model coupled with an evolutionary vaccination game embedding the public health system efforts to increase vaccine uptake. This results in a global system ``epidemic model + evolutionary game''. The epidemiological novelty of this work is that we assume that the switching to the strategy ``pro vaccine'' depends on the incidence of the disease. As a consequence of the above-mentioned accelerated decisions, the dynamics of the system acts on two different scales: a fast scale for the vaccine decisions and a slower scale for the spread of the disease. Another, and more methodological, element of novelty is that we apply Geometrical Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) to such a two-scale model and we then compare the geometric analysis with the Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (QSSA) approach, showing a criticality in the latter. Abstract: We propose a compartmental model for a disease with temporary immunity and secondary infections. From our assumptions on the parameters involved in the model, the system naturally evolves in three time scales. We characterize the equilibria of the system and analyze their stability. We find conditions for the existence of two endemic equilibria, for some cases in which $\mathcal{R}_0 < 1$. Then, we unravel the interplay of the three time scales, providing conditions to foresee whether the system evolves in all three scales, or only in the fast and the intermediate ones. Abstract: We present and analyze an example of activity aiming at introducing graphical language and standards to students of the first year bachelor's in architecture. Our example concerns the 2D representation of an architectural object, an essential competency in the architect's profession, and specifically deals with roofing systems made up of vaults generated by cylinders and their intersections. It is a first attempt to create activities that involve all students regardless of their different levels of geometric understanding and of familiarity with graphic language; in particular, this example exploits the introduction of physical or virtual models to support the mathematical thinking of students in completing the task and takes place during regular lesson times, without modifying or adding mathematical subject contents. Research literature on mathematical modeling, in particular on the so-called prescriptive one, provides us tools to frame and implement our study case; it also allows presenting mathematical modeling as a goal in an extra-mathematical educational context., Nous présentons et analysons un exemple d'activité visant à initier au langage graphique codé des étudiants de première année de licence en architecture. Notre exemple concerne la représentation 2D d'un objet architectural, une compétence essentielle dans le métier d'architecte, et traite spécifiquement des systèmes de couverture constitués de voûtes générées par des cylindres et par leurs intersections. Il s'agit d'une première tentative de créer des activités qui impliquent tous les élèves, quels que soient leurs différents niveaux de compréhension géométrique et de familiarité avec le langage graphique ; en particulier, l'exemple présenté exploite l'introduction de modèles physiques ou virtuels pour soutenir la pensée mathématique des élèves dans la réalisation de la tâche et se déroule pendant le temps normal de cours, sans modifier ni ajouter le contenu mathématique établi dans les programmes d'études. However, even if each isolated part is working flawlessly, it often happens that bugs in one software application arise due to the interaction with other modules. Those software misbehaviors become particularly critical when they affect the residual battery life, causing power dissipation. An automatic approach to detect power-affecting software defects is proposed. The approach is intended to be part of a qualifying verification plan and complete human expertise. Motorola, always at the forefront of researching innovations in the product development chain, experimented the approach on a mobile phone prototype during a partnership with Politecnico di Torino. Software errors unrevealed by all human-designed tests have been detected by the proposed framework, two out of three critical from the power consumption point of view, thus enabling Motorola to further improve its verification plans. Abstract: International audience; The H2020 PALANTIR project aims at delivering a Security-as-a-Service solution to SMEs and microenterprises via the exploitation of containerised Network Functions. However, these functions are conceived by third-party developers and can also be deployed in untrustworthy virtualisation layers, depending on the subscribed delivery model. Therefore, they cannot be trusted and require a stringent monitoring to ensure their harmlessness, as well as adequate measures to remediate any nefarious activities. This paper justifies, details and evaluates a Zero-Trust architecture supporting PALANTIR’s solution. Specifically, PALANTIR periodically attests the service and infrastructure’s components for signs of compromise by implementing the Trusted Computing paradigm. Verification addresses the firmware, OS and software using UEFI measured boot and Linux Integrity Measurement Architecture, extended to support containerised application attestation. Mitigation actions are supervised by the Recovery Service and the Security Orchestrator based on OSM to, respectively, determine the adequate remediation actions from a recovery policy and enforce them down to the lower layers of the infrastructure through local authenticated enablers. We detail an implementation prototype serving a baseline for quantitative evaluation of our work.

Abstract: The field of neuromorphic computing has been rapidly evolving in recent years, with an increasing focus on hardware design and reliability. This special session paper provides an overview of the recent developments in neuromorphic computing, focusing on hardware design and reliability. We first review the traditional CMOS-based approaches to neuromorphic hardware design and identify the challenges related to scalability, latency, and power consumption. We then investigate alternative approaches based on emerging technologies, specifically integrated photonics approaches within the NEUROPULS project. Finally, we examine the impact of device variability and aging on the reliability of neuromorphic hardware and present techniques for mitigating these effects. Abstract: 17 pages; International audience; Microfluidics proved to be a key technology in various applications, allowing to reproduce large-scale laboratory settings at a more sustainable small-scale. The current effort is focused on enhancing the mixing process of different passive species at the micro-scale, where a laminar flow regime damps turbulence effects. Chaotic advection is often used to improve mixing effects also at very low Reynolds numbers. In particular, we focus on passive micromixers, where chaotic advection is mainly achieved by properly selecting the geometry of microchannels. In such a context, reduced order modeling can play a role, especially in the design of new geometries. In this chapter, we verify the reliability and the computational benefits lead by a Hierarchical Model (HiMod) reduction when modeling the transport of a passive scalar in an S-shaped microchannel. Such a geometric configuration provides an ideal setting where to apply a HiMod approximation, which exploits the presence of a leading dynamics to commute the original three-dimensional model into a system of one-dimensional coupled problems. It can be proved that HiMod reduction guarantees a very good accuracy when compared with a high-fidelity model, despite a drastic reduction in terms of number of unknowns.

Abstract: This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. Abstract: Data de publicació electrònica: 07-03-2023 Current sound-based practices and systems developed in both academia and industry point to convergent research trends that bring together the field of Sound and Music Computing with that of the Internet of Things. This paper proposes a vision for the emerging field of the Internet of Sounds (IoS), which stems from such disciplines. The IoS relates to the network of Sound Things, i.e., devices capable of sensing, acquiring, processing, actuating, and exchanging data serving the purpose of communicating sound-related information. In the IoS paradigm, which merges under a unique umbrella the emerging fields of the Internet of Musical Things and the Internet of Audio Things, heterogeneous devices dedicated to musical and non-musical tasks can interact and cooperate with one another and with other things connected to the Internet to facilitate sound-based services and applications that are globally available to the users. We survey the state of the art in this space, discuss the technological and non-technological challenges ahead of us and propose a comprehensive research agenda for the field.

Abstract: Never before such a vast amount of data, including genome sequencing, has been collected for any viral pandemic than for the current case of COVID-19. This offers the possibility to trace the virus evolution and to assess the role mutations play in its spread within the population, in real time. To this end, we focused on the Spike protein for its central role in mediating viral outbreak and replication in host cells. Employing the Levenshtein distance on the Spike protein sequences, we designed a machine learning algorithm yielding a temporal clustering of the available dataset. From this, we were able to identify and define emerging persistent variants that are in agreement with known evidences. Our novel algorithm allowed us to define persistent variants as chains that remain stable over time and to highlight emerging variants of epidemiological interest as branching events that occur over time. Hence, we determined the relationship and temporal connection between variants of interest and the ensuing passage to dominance of the current variants of concern. Remarkably, the analysis and the relevant tools introduced in our work serve as an early warning for the emergence of new persistent variants once the associated cluster reaches 1% of the time-binned sequence data. We validated our approach and its effectiveness on the onset of the Alpha variant of concern. We further predict that the recently identified lineage AY.4.2 (‘Delta plus’) is causing a new emerging variant. Comparing our findings with the epidemiological data we demonstrated that each new wave is dominated by a new emerging variant, thus confirming the hypothesis of the existence of a strong correlation between the birth of variants and the pandemic multi-wave temporal pattern. The above allows us to introduce the epidemiology of variants that we described via the Mutation epidemiological Renormalisation Group framework.

Abstract: Detection of Zn(II) in oil-polluted seawater via square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SW-ASV) utilizing thin gold electrodes sputtered onto nanoporous poly(acrylic acid)-grafted-poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PAA-g-PVDF) membrane is herein reported. Prior to SW-ASV, PAA grafted nanopores demonstrated to efficiently trap Zn(II) ions at open circuit. This passive adsorption followed a Langmuir law. An affinity constant of 1.41 L $$\upmu $$ μ mol$$^{-1}$$ - 1 and a maximum Zn(II) adsorbed mass q$$_{max}$$ max of 1.21 $$\upmu $$ μ mol g$$^{-1}$$ - 1 were found. Applied SW-ASV protocol implied an accumulation step (− 1.2 V for 120 s) followed by a stripping step (− 1.2 to 1 V; 25 Hz; step: 4 mV; amplitude: 25 mV; acetate buffer (pH 5.5)). It revealed a Zn redox potential at − 0.8 V (Ag/AgCl pseudo-reference). Multiple measurements in synthetic waters close to the composition of production waters exhibited a decreasing precision with the number of readings R (1.65$$\%$$ % (R = 2) and 6.56$$\%$$ % (R = 3)). These membrane-electrodes should be used as disposable. The intra-batch mean precision was 14$$\%$$ % (n = 3) while inter-batches precision was 20$$\%$$ % (n = 15). Linear and linear-log calibrations allow exploitation of Zn(II) concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 $$\upmu $$ μ g L$$^{-1}$$ - 1 and 100 to 1000 $$\upmu $$ μ g L$$^{-1}$$ - 1 respectively. The LOD was 4.2 $$\upmu $$ μ g L$$^{-1}$$ - 1 (3S/N). Thanks to obtained calibration, a detected Zn(II) content of 1 ppm in a raw production water from North Sea oil platform was determined.

Abstract: International audience; The reliability evaluation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) executed on Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) is a challenging problem since the hardware architecture is highly complex and the software frameworks are composed of many layers of abstraction. While software-level fault injection is a common and fast way to evaluate the reliability of complex applications, it may produce unrealistic results since it has limited access to the hardware resources and the adopted fault models may be too naive (i.e., single and double bit flip). Contrarily, physical fault injection with neutron beam provides realistic error rates but lacks fault propagation visibility. This paper proposes a characterization of the DNN fault model combining both neutron beam experiments and fault injection at software level. We exposed GPUs running General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) and DNNs to beam neutrons to measure their error rate. On DNNs, we observe that the percentage of critical errors can be up to 61%, and show that ECC is ineffective in reducing critical errors. We then performed a complementary software-level fault injection, using fault models derived from RTL simulations. Our results show that by injecting complex fault models, the YOLOv3 misdetection rate is validated to be very close to the rate measured with beam experiments, which is 8.66× higher than the one measured with fault injection using only single-bit flips.

Abstract: International audience; Modern Intelligent Infrastructures (II) are highly complex, interconnected systems that are now emerging. For instance, II can integrate technologies and processes to provide citizens with faster services and better goods. An average II can include many technologies, e.g., Cloud applications and IoT devices, under different environments, e.g., industry 4.0 production plants and smart buildings. Although II bring concrete benefits to all of these contexts, they also carry security concerns. Reasoning about threats and security exposures that might affect II is non-trivial. This is only partially due to their inherent complexity. As a matter of fact, real II are typically in charge of some critical operations that cannot be interrupted or compromised for experimental purposes. An alternative solution is to rely on digital replicas which can provide a good trade-off between realism and usability. These assets represent a strategic and highly demanded resource for the security community. In this paper, we present HArMoNICS, a case study infrastructure meant to provide a playground for security experts interested in II security. HArMoNICS revolves around a digital replica of a real Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM) located in Italy. Although most of the components are based on or inspired by the real system, HArMoNICS has been enriched with further security-relevant features. As a result, the case study includes vertical use cases focusing on specific security topics. Security researchers can use it to assess the effectiveness of new methodologies, to carry out security training activities, or even to extend it with new elements.

Abstract: In this paper we show that, for a sub-Laplacian Δ on a 3-dimensional manifold M, no point interaction centered at a point q 0 ∈ M exists. When M is complete w.r.t. the associated sub-Riemannian structure, this means that Δ acting on C 0 ∞ ( M ∖ { q 0 } ) is essentially self-adjoint in L 2 ( M ) . A particular example is the standard sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group. This is in stark contrast with what happens in a Riemannian manifold N, whose associated Laplace-Beltrami operator acting on C 0 ∞ ( N ∖ { q 0 } ) is never essentially self-adjoint in L 2 ( N ) , if dim ⁡ N ≤ 3 . We then apply this result to the Schrodinger evolution of a thin molecule, i.e., with a vanishing moment of inertia, rotating around its center of mass.

Abstract: Precise and accurate electrical characterization of power electronics device die structures at the wafer level is essential to compare device operation to the design and to model reliability issues. In this paper, a parametric analysis for local electrical characterization in two dimensions for a discrete packaged commercial silicon carbide MOSFET is presented. On the cross-sectional sample, electron beam-induced current (EBIC) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to locate the pn junction of the body diode, evaluating the effect of the electron beam energy on the imaging of this area. Scanning Capacitance Microscopy (SCM) based on an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is employed to analyze the junction areas of the packaged silicon carbide MOSFET device. A parametric approach is proposed to reveal the local electrical properties of all layers in the MOSFET (n-, p-type, low, medium and high doping levels of doped SiC epilayers and SiC substrate and the silicon gate). The objective of the paper is to expose the potentialities of EBIC and SCM to perform comprehensive characterization of a SiC packaged device. The influence of the applied voltages (VDC and VAC) during SCM acquisitions is investigated, in order to quantify their effect on the analysis of the doped layers of the MOSFET SiC. The nano-electrical experiments are supported by TCAD simulations of the tip/sample nano-MOS contact to confirm the interpretation in terms of doping levels of the AFM maps of the silicon carbide die.

Abstract: International audience; Wave energy is a promising renewable resource for its reliability and power density, and many technological milestones have been achieved. Significant efforts are made to design and optimize Wave Energy Converters (WECs); however, analyses are often limited to simplified conditions. Among such restrictive assumptions, waves are frequently described utilizing monodirectional spectra, thus leading to approximate evaluations, also in terms of absorbed power. In real sea conditions, the waves are multidirectional, and the analysis as a 2D superposition of multiple wave components should be investigated. In particular, linear waves can be analyzed as a sum of sine waves characterized by different amplitudes, frequencies, phases and directions. The case study device analyzed in this paper is PeWEC (Pendulum Wave Energy Converter), a rotating mass device that converts energy based on pitch motion, moored through a spread catenary mooring system. The sea states investigated are those of the island of Cyprus. The spectrum is defined as the combination between the JONSWAP frequency spectrum and the cos-2s directional spectrum. To compute the sea elevation components the Deterministic Amplitude Scheme (DAS) method is used. The forcing acting on the device, the mooring loads and the device motions are examined and compared to quantify the error produced by the monodirectional approximations. The time domain solver OrcaFlex is employed to investigate the interaction of the waves with the moored hull. Compared with the multidirectional analysis, the monodirectional approximation generates an overestimation of the pitch by 5% and of the surge by 3%, highlighting the importance of taking spreading into account if the device is directional.

Abstract: Riparian zones are the paragon of transitional ecosystems, providing critical habitat and ecosystem services that are especially threatened by global change. Following consultation with experts, 10 key challenges were identified to be addressed for riparian vegetation science and management improvement: (1) Create a distinct scientific community by establishing stronger bridges between disciplines; (2) Make riparian vegetation more visible and appreciated in society and policies; (3) Improve knowledge regarding biodiversity—ecosystem functioning links; (4) Manage spatial scale and context-based issues; (5) Improve knowledge on social dimensions of riparian vegetation; (6) Anticipate responses to emergent issues and future trajectories; (7) Enhance tools to quantify and prioritize ecosystem services; (8) Improve numerical modeling and simulation tools; (9) Calibrate methods and increase data availability for better indicators and monitoring practices and transferability; and (10) Undertake scientific validation of best management practices. These challenges are discussed and critiqued here, to guide future research into riparian vegetation. Abstract: International audience; The reliability of crop-growth modelling is related to the accuracy of the information used to describe the agricultural growing phases. A proper knowledge of sowing periods has a significant impact on the effectiveness of any analysis based on modeled crop growth. In this work, an estimation of maize actual sowing periods for year 2019 is presented, combining the optical and radar information from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. The crop classification was conducted according to the information provided by local public authorities over an area of 30 km × 30 km, and 1154 maize fields were considered within the analysis. The combined use of NDVI and radar time series enabled a high-resolution assessment of sowing periods and the description of maize emergence through the soil, by detecting changes in the ground surface geometry. A radar-based index was introduced to detect the periods when plants emerge through the soil, and the sowing periods were retrieved considering the thermal energy needed by seeds to germinate and the daily temperatures before the emergence. Results show that 52% of maize hectares were sowed in late April, while about 30% were sowed during the second half of May. Sentinel-1 appears more suitable to describe the late growing phase of maize, since the radar backscattering is sensitive to the dry biomass of plants while the NDVI decreases because of the chromatic change of leaves. This study highlights the potential of synergy between remote sensing sources for agricultural management policies and improving the accuracy of crop-related modelling.

Abstract: International audience; We present a spatial hybrid discrete-continuum modelling framework for the interaction dynamics between tumour cells and cytotoxic T cells, which play a pivotal role in the immune response against tumours. In this framework, tumour cells and T cells are modelled as individual agents while chemokines that drive the chemotactic movement of T cells towards the tumour are modelled as a continuum. We formally derive the continuum counterpart of this model, which is given by a coupled system that comprises an integro-differential equation for the density of tumour cells, a partial differential equation for the density of T cells, and a partial differential equation for the concentration of chemokines. We report on computational results of the hybrid model and show that there is an excellent quantitative agreement between them and numerical solutions of the corresponding continuum model. These results shed light on the mechanisms that underlie the emergence of different levels of infiltration of T cells into the tumour and elucidate how T-cell infiltration shapes anti-tumour immune response. Moreover, to present a proof of concept for the idea that, exploiting the computational efficiency of the continuum model, extensive numerical simulations could be carried out, we investigate the impact of T-cell infiltration on the response of tumour cells to different types of anti-cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract: International audience; This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumer booking behavior in the peer-to-peer accommodation sector. This study used a dataset composed of 2041,966 raws containing 69,727 properties located in all 21 Italian regions in the pre-and post-COVID-191. Results show that after the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers preferred P2P accommodations with price premiums and located in rural (versus urban) areas. Although the findings reveal a preference for entire apartments over shared accommodation (i.e., room, apartment), this preference did not change significantly after COVID-19 lockdowns. The contribution of this study lies in combining psychological distance theory and signaling theory to assess P2P performance in the pre-and post-COVID-19 periods.

Measuring power consumption is a very time consuming activity, therefore many works in the literature focused on the indirect ways to provide power consumption estimation in a fast manner. In this paper we concentrate on a similar issue, concentrating our effort on devising a fast method for the identification and estimation of the peak power produced by test patterns. In particular we provide a detailed discussion on case studies related to peak power estimation of CPU cores when executing functional patterns, the proposed method uses the gate-level description of the CPU to identify a subset of time points over the entire test pattern that are showing the most significant peak power values. The proposed methodology has been validated on two case studies synthesized in a 65nm industrial technology.

Abstract: International audience; Today's SoCs are composed of a wide variety of modules, such as microprocessor cores, memories, peripherals, and customized blocks directly related to the targeted application. To effectively perform simulation-based design verification of peripheral cores, it is necessary to stimulate the description in a broad range of behavior possibilities, checking the produced results. Different strategies for generating suitable stimuli have been proposed by the research community to functionally verify these modules and their interconnection when embedded in a SoC: however, their verification often remains a largely manual and unstructured operation. In this paper we describe a general approach to develop concise and effective sets of inputs by modeling the configuration modes of a peripheral with a graph, and creating paths able to cover all of its nodes: proper stimuli for the device are then directly derived from the paths. The resulting inputs sequences are aimed at design verification of system peripherals such as DMA controllers, and can be applied via simulation by means of dedicated testbenches or by setting up an environment including a processor, which executes a proper test priogram. In the latter case, the developed programs can be exploited in later stages for testing, by adding suitable observability features. Experimental results demonstrating the method effectiveness are reported.

Abstract: International audience; Numerous electronic systems store valuable intellectual property (IP) information inside non-volatile memories. In order to protect the integrity of such sensitive information from an unauthorized access or modification, encryption mechanisms are employed. From a reliability standpoint, such information can be vital to the system’s functionality and thus, dedicated techniques are employed to detect possible reliability threats (e.g., transient faults in the memory content). In this paper we explore the capability of encryption mechanisms to guarantee protection from both unauthorized access and faults, while considering a Convolutional Neural Network application whose weights represent the valuable IP of the system. Experimental results show that it is possible to achieve very high fault detection rates, thus exploiting the benefits of security mechanisms for reliability purposes as well.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we introduce and design sparse constellations for Direct-to-Satellite Internet of Things (DtS-IoT). DtS-IoT does not require a ground infrastructure, because the devices are directly connected to Low Earth Orbit satellites acting as orbiting gateways. The key idea of sparse constellations is to significantly reduce the number of in-orbit DtS-IoT satellites by (i) a proper dimensioning of the delivery delay anyway present in resource-constrained IoT services, and (ii) an optimal positioning of the orbiting gateways. First, we analyze LoRa/LoRaWAN and NB-IoT standards and derive realistic constraints on the maximum gap time between two consecutive passing-by satellites. Then, we introduce and optimize an algorithm to design quasioptimal topologies for sparse IoT constellations. Finally, we apply our design to both global and regional coverage and we analyze the trade-off between latency, number of orbit planes and total number of satellites. Results show that sparse constellations can provide worldwide IoT coverage with only 12.5% and 22.5% of the satellites required by traditional dense constellations considering 3-hour and 2-hour gaps. Also, we show that regionspecific coverage of Africa and Europe can be achieved with only 4 and 3 satellites for LoRa/LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, respectively.

Abstract: International audience; Recent medical applications are largely dominated by the application of Machine Learning (ML) models to assist expert decisions, leading to disruptive innovations in radiology, pathology, genomics, and hence modern healthcare systems in general. Despite the profitable usage of AI-based algorithms, these data-driven methods are facing issues such as the scarcity and privacy of user data, as well as the difficulty of institutions exchanging medical information. With insufficient data, ML is prevented from reaching its full potential, which is only possible if the database consists of the full spectrum of possible anatomies, pathologies, and input data types. To solve these issues, Federated Learning (FL) appeared as a valuable approach in the medical field, allowing patient data to stay where it is generated. Since an FL setting allows many clients to collaboratively train a model while keeping training data decentralized, it can protect privacy-sensitive medical data. However, FL is still unable to deliver all its promises and meets the more stringent requirements (e.g., latency, security) of a healthcare system based on multiple Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). For example, although no data are shared among the participants by definition in FL systems, some security risks are still present and can be considered as vulnerabilities from multiple aspects. This paper sheds light upon the emerging deployment of FL, provides a broad overview of current approaches and existing challenges, and outlines several directions of future work that are relevant to solving existing problems in federated healthcare, with a particular focus on security and privacy issues.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to build a reduced-order model for parametrized porous media equations. The main challenge of this type of problems is that the Kolmogorov width of the solution manifold typically decays quite slowly and thus makes usual linear model-order reduction methods inappropriate. In this work, we investigate an adaptation of the methodology proposed in [15], based on the use of Wasserstein barycenters [1], to the case of non-conservative problems. Numerical examples in one-dimensional test cases illustrate the advantages and limitations of this approach and suggest further research directions that we intend to explore in the future.; Le but de ce travail est de construire un modèle réduit pour des problèmes d'écoulements en milieux poreux paramétrés. La difficulté principale de ce type de problèmes est que la distance de Kolmogorov de l'ensemble de solutions décroît lentement, rendant ainsi les méthodes de réduction de modèles linéaires usuelles inefficaces. Ici, nous proposons une adaptation de la méthodologie proposée dans [15], utilisant des barycentres de Wasserstein [1], au cas de problèmes non conservatifs. The scheme exploits a block diagonally dominant structure of the wire self block -- that models the neuronal fibers self interactions -- and of the surface self block -- modeling interface potentials. This structure leads to two Neumann iteration schemes further accelerated with adaptive integral methods. The resulting algorithm is linear up to logarithmic factors. Numerical results confirm the performance of the method in biomedically relevant scenarios.

Abstract: International audience; In the literature, it is argued that Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) possess a certain degree of robustness mainly for two reasons: their distributed and parallel architecture, and their redundancy introduced due to over provisioning. Indeed,they are made, as a matter of fact, of more neurons with respect to the minimal number required to perform the computations. It means that they could withstand errors in a bounded number of neurons and continue to function properly. However, it is also known that different neurons in DNNs have divergent fault tolerance capabilities. Neurons that contribute the least to the final prediction accuracy are less sensitive to errors. Conversely, the neurons that contribute most are considered critical because errors within them could seriously compromise the correct functionality of the DNN. This paper presents a software methodology based on a Triple Modular Redundancy technique, which aims at improving the overall reliability of the DNN, by selectively protecting a reduced set of critical neurons. Our findings indicate that the robustness of the DNNs can be enhanced, clearly, at the cost of a larger memory footprint and a small increase in the total execution time. The trade-offs as well as the improvements are discussed in the work by exploiting two DNN architectures: ResNet and DenseNet trained and tested on CIFAR-10.

Abstract: International audience; Gas chemical sensors are strongly affected by the so-called drift, i.e., changes in sensors' response caused by poisoning and aging that may significantly spoil the measures gathered. The paper presents a mechanism able to correct drift, that is: delivering a correct unbiased fingerprint to the end user. The proposed system exploits a state-of-the-art evolutionary strategy to iteratively tweak the coefficients of a linear transformation. The system operates continuously. The optimal correction strategy is learnt without a-priori models or other hypothesis on the behavior of physical-chemical sensors. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the approach on a real problem.

Abstract: Chapter 43; International audience; Gas chemical sensors are strongly affected by drift, i.e., changes in sensors’ response with time, that may turn statistical models commonly used for classification completely useless after a period of time. This paper presents a new classifier that embeds an adaptive stage able to reduce drift effects. The proposed system exploits a state-of-the-art evolutionary strategy to iteratively tweak the coefficients of a linear transformation able to transparently transform raw measures in order to mitigate the negative effects of the drift. The system operates continuously. The optimal correction strategy is learnt without a-priori models or other hypothesis on the behavior of physical-chemical sensors. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the approach on a real problem.

Abstract: International audience; A catalyst made of Ni 0 nanoparticles highly dispersed on a lamellar alumina support was prepared by an environmentally-friendly route. The latter involved the synthesis of an aluminum-containing metalorganic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Al) in which the linkers were derived from the depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) originating from plastic wastes. After demonstrating the purity and structure integrity of the PET-derived MIL-53(Al), this MOF was impregnated with nickel nitrate salt and then calcined to form a lamellar Ni-Al 2 O 3 mixed metal oxide with a high surface area (S BET = 1276 m 2 g À1 , N 2 sorption). This mixed oxide consisted of nickel aluminate nanodomains dispersed within amorphous alumina, as revealed by PXRD and TPR analyses. Subsequent reduction under H 2 resulted in the formation of well-dispersed 5 nm Ni 0 nanoparticles homogeneously occluded within the interlamellar porosity of the g-alumina matrix, as attested by electron microscopy. This waste-derived catalyst displayed catalytic performances in the reaction of dry reforming of methane (DRM) as good as its counterpart made from a MOF obtained from commercial benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (BDC). Thus, under similar steady state conditions, at 650 1C and 1 bar, the PET-derived catalyst led to CH 4 and CO 2 conversions as high as those on the BDC-derived catalyst, and its catalytic stability and selectivity towards DRM were excellent as well (no loss of activity after 13 h and H 2 : CO products ratio remaining at 1). Moreover, both catalysts were much better than those of a reference nickel alumina catalyst prepared by conventional impregnation route. This work therefore demonstrates the possibility of using plastic wastes instead of commercial chemicals to prepare efficient porous nickel-alumina DRM catalysts from MOFs, fostering the concept of circular economy.

Abstract: International audience; Mobile phones are becoming more and more complex devices, both from the hardware and from the software point of view. Consequently, their various parts are often developed separately. Each sub-system or application may be worked out by a specialized team of engineers and programmers. Frequently, bugs in one component are triggered by the complex interaction between the different applications. Those errors sometimes lead to power dissipation and other misbehaviors that lower residual battery life, a catastrophic event from the user perspective. In this paper we propose a model-based automatic approach to uncover software bugs, which is intended to complement human expertise and complete a qualifying verification plan. The system has been applied on the prototype of a Motorola mobile phone during a partnership with Politecnico di Torino. We demonstrate that our approach is effective by detecting three distinct software misbehaviours that escape all traditional tests. The paper details the methodology, tests and results.

Abstract: International audience; New semiconductor technologies for advanced applications are more prone to defects and imperfections related, among several different causes, to the manufacturing process, aging and cross-talks. These phenomena negatively affect the circuit’s timing and can be effectively modeled by means of the path delay fault (PDF) model. While path delay testing is currently supported by commercial Automatic Test Pattern Generation tools for scan designs, functional testing covering PDFs is not widely adopted, mainly because of the high cost for test generation. On the other side, functional test is already widely adopted for in-field test of stuck-at faults, which is often performed resorting to the execution of suitable test programs (Self Test Libraries, or STLs). This approach is attractive, since it can be performed at-speed with limited time constraints and high flexibility, making it a suitable in-field test solutions. Previous work assessed the feasibility and validity of functional approaches based on test programs targeting PDFs. In this work, we present the first systematic method for the development of very high fault coverage test programs for PDFs, which largely outperform test programs written for other fault models. Moreover, the proposed method allows the identification of functionally untestable faults. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was proven on an open-source RISC-V processor core, where 100% coverage of the functionally testable longest paths was achieved, compared with an initial coverage of 0.52% achieved with test programs targeting stuck-at faults. Results demonstrate that shorter paths are also effectively covered.

Dans le cas italien, et notamment dans le cas de Turin sur lequel nous nous attarderons plus spécifiquement, ce lien est loin d'être aussi évident. Ce cas nous amène à nous demander si la planification stratégique et les réflexions prospectives ne sont pas plutôt un substitut à des formes plus poussées et plus institutionnalisées de coopération métropolitaine.
