We theoretically study the bound states of interacting photons propagating in a waveguide chirally coupled to an array of atoms. We demonstrate that the bound photon pairs can concentrate at the edge of the array and link this to the non-Hermitian skin effect. Unlike tight-binding non-Hermitian setups, the bound states in the waveguide-coupled array exhibit infinite radiative lifetimes when the array has an infinite size. However, in a finite array, non-Hermiticity and localization of bound pairs emerge due to their chiral dissociation into scattering states. Counterintuitively, when the photons are preferentially emitted to the right, the bound pairs are localized at the left edge of the array and vice versa., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + supplementary

We numerically verify and analytically prove a winding number invariant that correctly predicts the number of edge states in one-dimensional, nearest-neighbour (between unit cells), two-band models with any complex couplings and open boundaries. Our winding number uses analytical continuation of the wave-vector into the complex plane and involves two special points on the full Riemann surface band structure that correspond to bulk eigenvector degeneracies. Our invariant is invariant under unitary and similarity transforms. We emphasize that the topological criteria we propose here differ from what is traditionally defined as a topological or trivial phase in symmetryprotected classification studies. It is a broader invariant for our toy model that applies to non-zero energy edge states and its transition does not coincide with the gap closing condition. We study theoretically an array of two-level qubits moving relative to a one-dimensional waveguide. This motion can be implemented mechanically or simulated via the modulation of the couplings between the qubits and the waveguide. When the frequency of this motion approaches twice the qubit resonance frequency, it induces parametric generation of photons and excitation of the qubits. The proposed quantum optomechanical system offers a plethora of possibilities for exploring various quantum electrodynamics phenomena. However, their theoretical analysis is challenging due to the presence of quantum nonlinearity, a continuum of propagating photonic modes, and the excitation of strongly nonequilibrium qubit states, which make many conventional analytical tools inapplicable. To address these challenges, we develop a comprehensive general theoretical framework that incorporates both perturbative diagrammatic techniques and a rigorous master-equation approach. Our calculations reveal several intriguing effects, including the directional dynamical Casimir effect, where momenta of emitted photon pairs are correlated, and the waveguide-mediated collective Unruh effect, where motion drives the qubits to a nontrivial steady state that can be entangled and exhibit phase transitions. Additionally, we examine the radiation back-action on the qubit motion, which becomes particularly pronounced when subradiant modes in the qubit array are excited. We present a protocol that maximizes unconditional entanglement generation between two masses interacting directly through $1/r^{n}$ potential. The protocol combines optimal quantum control of continuously measured masses with their non-equilibrium dynamics, driven by a time-dependent interaction strength. Applied to a pair of optically trapped sub-micron particles coupled via electrostatic interaction, our protocol enables unconditional entanglement generation at the fundamental limit of the conditional state and with an order of magnitude smaller interaction between the masses compared to the existing steady-state approaches.

We study theoretically the interplay of spontaneous emission and interactions for the multiple-excited quasistationary eigenstates in a finite periodic array of multilevel atoms coupled to the waveguide. We develop an analytical approach to calculate such eigenstates based on the subradiant dimer basis. Our calculations reveal the peculiar multimerization effect driven by the anharmonicity of the atomic potential: while a general eigenstate is an entangled one, there exist eigenstates that are products of dimers, trimers, or tetramers, depending on the size of the system and the fill factor. Quantum correlations between distant particles remain enigmatic since the birth of quantum mechanics. Here we predict a novel kind of bound quantum state in the simplest one-dimensional setup of two interacting particles in a box. Paradoxically, two entangled particles become localized at the opposite edges of the box even though their interactions at large distance should seemingly play no role. Such states could be realized in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics platform, where an array of superconducting qubits or cold atoms is coupled to a waveguide. We demonstrate how long-range waveguide-mediated couplings enable interaction-induced quantum states separated by large distances. We have theoretically studied the scattering of two-photon pulses from a spatially-separated array of two-level atoms coupled to the waveguide. A general analytical expression for the scattered pulse has been obtained. The contributions of various single-eigenstate and double-excited eigenstates of the array have been analyzed. We have also calculated the dependence of the time incident photons are stored in the array on its period and the number of atoms. We have developed a theory of parametric photon generation in the waveguides coupled to arrays of quantum emitters with temporally modulated resonance frequencies. Such generation can be interpreted as a dynamical Casimir effect. We demonstrate numerically and analytically how the emission directionality and photon-photon correlations can be controlled by the phases of the modulation. The emission spectrum is shown to be strongly dependent on the anharmonicity of the emitter potential. We study theoretically quantum states of two repelling spinless particles in a one-dimensional tight-binding model with simple periodic lattice and open boundary conditions. We demonstrate, that when the particles are not identical, their interaction drives nontrivial correlated two-particle states, such as bound states, edge states as well as interaction-induced flat bands. Specifically, the center-of-mass and relative motions of two particles become coupled in a topologically nontrivial way. The ability to control the direction of scattered light in integrated devices is crucial to provide the flexibility and scalability for a wide range of on-chip applications, such as integrated photonics, quantum information processing and nonlinear optics. In the optical and microwave frequency ranges tunable directionality can be achieved by applying external magnetic fields, that modify optical selection rules, by using nonlinear effects, or interactions with vibrations. However, these approaches are less suitable to control propagation of microwave photons inside integrated superconducting quantum devices, that is highly desirable. Here, we demonstrate tunable directional scattering with just two transmon qubits coupled to a transmission line based on periodically modulated transition frequency. By changing the symmetry of the modulation, governed by the relative phase between the local modulation tones, we achieve directional forward or backward photon scattering.

We develop a general theoretical framework to dynamically engineer quantum correlations in the frequency-comb emission from an array of superconducting qubits in a waveguide, rigorously accounting for the temporal modulation of the qubit resonance frequencies. We demonstrate, that when the resonance frequencies of the two qubits are periodically modulated with a $\pi$ phase shift, it is possible to realize simultaneous bunching and antibunching in cross-correlations of the scattered photons from different sidebands. Our approach, based on the dynamical conversion between the quantum excitations with different parity symmetry, is quite universal. It can be used to control two-particle correlations in generic dynamically modulated dissipative quantum systems.

We study theoretically driven quantum dynamics in periodic arrays of two-level qubits coupled to the waveguide. We demonstrate, that strongly subradiant eigenstates of the master equation for the density matrix emerge under strong coherent driving for arrays with the anti-Bragg periods $d=\lambda/4,3\lambda/4$... This happens even though are no such states at low driving powers. Thus, our findings show that in the quantum nonlinear regime the domain of existence of subradiant states expands beyond conventional subwavelength structures. The rapid progress in quantum information processing leads to a rising demand for devices to control the propagation of electromagnetic wave pulses and to ultimately realize a universal and efficient quantum memory. While in recent years significant progress has been made to realize slow light and quantum memories with atoms at optical frequencies, superconducting circuits in the microwave domain still lack such devices. Here, we demonstrate slowing down electromagnetic waves in a superconducting metamaterial composed of eight qubits coupled to a common waveguide, forming a waveguide quantum electrodynamics system. We analyze two complementary approaches, one relying on dressed states of the Autler-Townes splitting, and the other based on a tailored dispersion profile using the qubits tunability. Our time-resolved experiments show reduced group velocities of down to a factor of about 1500 smaller than in vacuum. Depending on the method used, the speed of light can be controlled with an additional microwave tone or an effective qubit detuning. We study theoretically the spatial distribution of the polarizations in the array of resonant electromagnetic dipole emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The ratchet effect manifests itself in the spatial asymmetry of the distribution of the emitter occupations along the array under symmetrical pumping from both sides. The occupation asymmetry is driven by the periodic modulation in time of the emitter resonance frequencies. We find numerically and analytically the optimal conditions for maximal asymmetry. We also demonstrate that the ratchet effect can be enhanced due to the formation of topological electromagnetic edge states, enabled by the frequency modulation. We study theoretically interaction of optically-pumped excitons with acoustic waves in planar semiconductor nanostructures in the strongly nonlinear regime. We start with the multimode optomechanical lasing regime for optical pump frequency {above} the exciton resonance and demonstrate broadband chaotic-like lasing spectra. We also predict formation of propagating optomechanical domain walls driven by optomechanical nonlinearity for the optical pump {below} the exciton resonance. Stability conditions for the domain walls are examined analytically and are in agreement with direct numerical simulations. Our results apply to nonlinear sound propagation in the arrays of quantum wells or in the plane of Bragg semiconductor microcavities hosting excitonic polaritons., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

We study theoretically subradiant states in the array of atoms coupled to photons propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide focusing on the strongly interacting many-body regime with large excitation fill factor $f$. We introduce a generalized many-body entropy of entanglement based on exact numerical diagonalization followed by a high-order singular value decomposition. This approach has allowed us to visualize and understand the structure of a many-body quantum state. We reveal the breakdown of fermionized subradiant states with increase of $f$ with emergence of short-ranged dimerized antiferromagnetic correlations at the critical point $f=1/2$ and the complete disappearance of subradiant states at $f>1/2$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study theoretically optomechanical interactions in a semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum well under the optical pumping by a Bessel beam, carrying a non-zero orbital momentum. Due to the transfer of orbital momentum from light to phonons, the microcavity can act as an acoustic circulator: it rotates the propagation direction of the incident phonon by a certain angle clockwise or anticlockwise. Due to the optomechanical heating and cooling effects, the circulator can also function as an acoustic laser emitting sound with nonzero angular momentum. We study theoretically optomechanical damping and amplification spectra for vibrations interacting with excitonic polaritons in a zero-dimensional microcavity. We demonstrate, that the spectra strongly depend on the ratio of the exciton-phonon and the photon-phonon coupling constants. The interference between these couplings enables a situation when optomechanical gain exists either only for a lower polaritonic resonance or only for an upper polaritonic resonance. This review describes the emerging field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED) concerned with the interaction of photons propagating in a waveguide with localized quantum emitters. The collective emitter-photon interactions can lead to both enhanced and suppressed coupling compared to the case of independent emitters. Here, we focus on guided photons and ordered arrays, leading to super- and sub-radiant states, bound photon states and quantum correlations with promising quantum information applications. We highlight recent groundbreaking experiments performed with different quantum platforms, including cold atoms, superconducting qubits, semiconductor quantum dots, quantum solid-state defects, and we provide a comprehensive introduction to theoretical techniques to study the interactions and dynamics of these emitters and the photons in the waveguide., Comment: 64 pages, 36 figures, 2 tables. We provide the first classification of three-photon eigenstates in a finite periodic array of two-level atoms coupled to a waveguide. We focus on the strongly subwavelength limit and show the hierarchical structure of the eigenstates in the complex plane. The main characteristic eigenstates are explored using entanglement entropy as a distinguishing feature. We show that the rich interplay of effects from order, chaos to localisation found in two-photon systems extends naturally to three-photon systems. We study theoretically quantum states of a pair of photons interacting with a finite periodic array of two-level atoms in a waveguide. Our calculation reveals two-polariton eigenstates that have a highly irregular wave-function in real space. This indicates the Bethe ansatz breakdown and the onset of quantum chaos, in stark contrast to the conventional integrable problem of two interacting bosons in a box. We identify the long-range waveguide-mediated coupling between the atoms as the key ingredient of chaos and nonintegrability. We study theoretically the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(t)$ for photons transmitted through a periodic Bragg-spaced array of superconducting qubits, coupled to a waveguide. We demonstrate that photon bunching and anti-bunching persist much longer than both radiative and non-radiative lifetimes of a single qubit. The photon-photon correlations become immune to non-radiative dissipation due to the Borrmann effect, that is a strongly non-Markovian collective feature of light-qubit coupling inherent to the Bragg regime. We review the latest advances in the generation of quantum light with nonlinear nanoresonators in metasurfaces, which act both as sources of quantum states and nanoantennas shaping the emitted photons. We outline a general quantum theory of spontaneous photon-pair generation in arbitrary nonlinear photonic structures, including nanoresonators and metasurfaces, which provides an explicit analytical solution for the photon state expressed through the classical Green function. We formulate the correspondence between the quantum photon-pair generation and classical sum-frequency process in nonlinear media, and discuss its application in various contexts, including waveguide circuits and nanostructures. Recent discoveries in topological physics hold a promise for disorder-robust quantum systems and technologies. Topological states provide the crucial ingredient of such systems featuring increased robustness to disorder and imperfections. Here, we use an array of superconducting qubits to engineer a one-dimensional topologically nontrivial quantum metamaterial. By performing microwave spectroscopy of the fabricated array, we experimentally observe the spectrum of elementary excitations. We find not only the single-photon topological states but also the bands of exotic bound photon pairs arising due to the inherent anharmonicity of qubits. Furthermore, we detect the signatures of the two-photon bound edge-localized state which hints towards interaction-induced localization in our system. Waveguide quantum electrodynamics offers a wide range of possibilities to effectively engineer interactions between artificial atoms via a one-dimensional open waveguide. While these interactions have been experimentally studied in the few qubit limit, the collective properties of such systems for larger arrays of qubits in a metamaterial configuration has so far not been addressed. Here, we experimentally study a metamaterial made of eight superconducting transmon qubits with local frequency control coupled to the mode continuum of a waveguide. By consecutively tuning the qubits to a common resonance frequency we observe the formation of super- and subradiant states, as well as the emergence of a polaritonic bandgap. Making use of the qubits quantum nonlinearity, we demonstrate control over the latter by inducing a transparency window in the bandgap region of the ensemble. Topological quantum phases underpin many concepts of modern physics. While the existence of disorder-immune topological edge states of electrons usually requires magnetic fields, direct effects of magnetic field on light are very weak. As a result, demonstrations of topological states of photons employ synthetic fields engineered in special complex structures or external time-dependent modulations. Here, we reveal that the quantum Hall phase with topological edge states, spectral Landau levels and Hofstadter butterfly can emerge in a simple quantum system, where topological order arises solely from interactions without any fine-tuning. Such systems, arrays of two-level atoms (qubits) coupled to light being described by the classical Dicke model, have recently been realized in experiments with cold atoms and superconducting qubits. We study topological properties of bound pairs of photons in spatially-modulated qubit arrays (arrays of two-level atoms) coupled to a waveguide. While bound pairs behave like Bloch waves, they are topologically nontrivial in the parameter space formed by the center-of-mass momentum and the modulation phase, where the latter plays the role of a synthetic dimension. In a superlattice where each unit cell contains three two-level atoms (qubits), we calculate the Chern numbers for the bound-state photon bands, which are found to be $(1,-2,1)$. For open boundary condition, we find exotic topological bound-pair edge states with radiative losses. Unlike the conventional case of the bulk-edge correspondence, these novel edge modes not only exist in gaps separating the bound-pair bands, but they also may merge with and penetrate into the bands. We study theoretically the radiative lifetime of bound two-particle excitations in a waveguide with an array of two-level atoms, realising a 1D Dicke-like model. Recently, Zhang et al. [arXiv:1908.01818] have numerically found an unexpected sharp maximum of the bound pair lifetime when the array period $d$ is equal to $1/12$th of the light wavelength $\lambda_0$]. We uncover a rigorous transformation from the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with the long-ranged radiative coupling to the nearest-neigbor coupling model with the radiative losses only at the edges. This naturally explains the puzzle of long lifetime: the effective mass of the bound photon pair also diverges for $d=\lambda_0/12$, hampering an escape of photons through the edges. We predict the existence of a novel interaction-induced spatial localization in a periodic array of qubits coupled to a waveguide. This localization can be described as a quantum analogue of a self-induced optical lattice between two indistinguishable photons, where one photon creates a standing wave that traps the other photon. We calculate theoretically the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in the periodically patterned waveguide made from a diluted magnetic semiconductor. It is demonstrated that the TMOKE is resonantly enhanced when the incident wave is in resonance with the bound state in continuum, arising when the quality factor of the waveguide mode increases due to the far-field interference. Strong coupling between two quanta of different excitations leads to the formation of a hybridized state which paves a way for exploiting new degrees of freedom to control phenomena with high efficiency and precision. A magnon polaron is the hybridized state of a phonon and a magnon, the elementary quanta of lattice vibrations and spin waves in a magnetically-ordered material. A magnon polaron can be formed at the intersection of the magnon and phonon dispersions, where their frequencies coincide. The observation of magnon polarons in the time domain has remained extremely challenging because the weak interaction of magnons and phonons and their short lifetimes jeopardize the strong coupling required for the formation of a hybridized state. Here, we overcome these limitations by spatial matching of magnons and phonons in a metallic ferromagnet with a nanoscale periodic surface pattern. The spatial overlap of the selected phonon and magnon modes formed in the periodic ferromagnetic structure results in a high coupling strength which, in combination with their long lifetimes allows us to find clear evidence of an optically excited magnon polaron. We develop a rigorous theoretical approach for analyzing inelastic scattering of photon pairs in arrays of two-level qubits embedded in a waveguide. Our analysis reveals strong enhancement of the scattering when the energy of incoming photons resonates with the double-excited subradiant states. We identify the role of different double-excited states in the scattering such as superradiant, subradiant, and twilight states, being a product of single-excitation bright and subradiant states. Importantly, the N-excitation subradiant states can be engineered only if the number of qubits exceeds 2N. Both the subradiant and twilight states can generate long-lived photon-photon correlations, paving the way to a storage and processing of quantum information.

Optical nanoantennas have shown a great capacity for efficient extraction of photons from the near to the far-field, enabling directional emission from nanoscale single-photon sources. However, their potential for the generation and extraction of multi-photon quantum states remains unexplored. Here we demonstrate experimentally the nanoscale generation of two-photon quantum states at telecommunication wavelengths based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in an optical nanoantenna. The antenna is a crystalline AlGaAs nanocylinder, possessing Mie-type resonances at both the pump and the bi-photon wavelengths and when excited by a pump beam generates photonpairs with a rate of 35 Hz. Normalized to the pump energy stored by the nanoantenna, this rate corresponds to 1.4 GHz/Wm, being one order of magnitude higher than conventional on-chip or bulk photon-pair sources. I study theoretically quadrupolar topological insulators under applied static electric field rotated along the crystal axis. I demonstrate, that the energy spectrum of this structure is a Wannier-Stark ladder that is quantized and directly distinguishes between the topological phase, possessing localized corner states, and the trivial phase, lacking the corner states. We present a strategy based on two-dimensional arrays of coupled linear optical resonators to investigate the two-body physics of interacting bosons in one-dimensional lattices. In particular, we want to address the bound pairs in topologically non-trivial Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays. Taking advantage of the driven-dissipative nature of the resonators, we propose spectroscopic protocols to detect and tomographically characterize bulk doublon bands and doublon edge states from the spatially-resolved transmission spectra, and to highlight Feshbach resonance effects in two-body collision processes. We develop multipolar theory of nonlinear generation of entangled photons from subwavelength dielectric particles due to the spontaneous parametric downconversion. We demonstrate that optical excitation in resonance with the high-quality supercavity mode of the aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) nanodisk leads to a strong enhancement of generation of entangled photon pairs associated with electric and magnetic dipole modes. Our rigorous numerical results are corroborated by an analytical model, universally describing formation of high-$Q$ resonant states and dark states due to the interference and interplay of the parent multipoles, namely, magnetic dipoles and magnetic octupole. Our findings and description can be instructive for quantum and nonlinear nanophotonics applications.

We study solitons of the two-dimensional nonlinear Dirac equation with asymmetric cubic nonlinearity. We show that, with the nonlinearity parameters specifically tuned, a high degree of localization of both spinor components is enabled on a ring of certain radius. We propose a one-dimensional nonlinear system of coupled anharmonic oscillators that dynamically undergoes a topological transition switching from the {disordered} and topologically trivial phase into the nontrivial one due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking. The topological transition is accompanied by the formation of the topological interface state in the spectrum of linearized excitations of the stationary phase. Integrated photonics is a leading platform for quantum technologies including nonclassical state generation \cite{Vergyris:2016-35975:SRP, Solntsev:2014-31007:PRX, Silverstone:2014-104:NPHOT, Solntsev:2016:RPH}, demonstration of quantum computational complexity \cite{Lamitral_NJP2016} and secure quantum communications \cite{Zhang:2014-130501:PRL}. As photonic circuits grow in complexity, full quantum tomography becomes impractical, and therefore an efficient method for their characterization \cite{Lobino:2008-563:SCI, Rahimi-Keshari:2011-13006:NJP} is essential. Here we propose and demonstrate a fast, reliable method for reconstructing the two-photon state produced by an arbitrary quadratically nonlinear optical circuit. By establishing a rigorous correspondence between the generated quantum state and classical sum-frequency generation measurements from laser light, we overcome the limitations of previous approaches for lossy multimode devices \cite{Liscidini:2013-193602:PRL, Helt:2015-1460:OL}. We applied this protocol to a multi-channel nonlinear waveguide network, and measured a 99.28$\pm$0.31\% fidelity between classical and quantum characterization. This technique enables fast and precise evaluation of nonlinear quantum photonic networks, a crucial step towards complex, large-scale, device production.

We study theoretically two-photon states in a periodic array of coupled cavities with both on-site and nonlocal Kerr-type nonlinearities. In the absence of nonlinearity the structure is topologically trivial and possesses no edge states. The interplay of two nonlinear interaction mechanisms described by the extended Hubbard model facilitates formation of edge states of bound photon pairs. Numerical and exact analytical results for the two-photon wave functions are presented. We predict the existence of interaction-driven edge states of bound two-photon quasiparticles in a dimer periodic array of nonlinear optical cavities. Energy spectrum of photon pairs is dramatically richer than in the noninteracting case or in a simple lattice, featuring collapse and revival of multiple edge and bulk modes as well as edge states in continuum. We develop a general theoretical framework of integrated paired photon-plasmon generation through spontaneous wave mixing in nonlinear plasmonic and metamaterial nanostructures, rigorously accounting for material dispersion and losses in quantum regime through the electromagnetic Green function. The photon blockade is a hallmark of quantum light transport through a single two-level system that can accomodate only one photon. Here, we theoretically show that two-photon transmission can be suppressed even for a seemingly classical system with large number of quantum dots in a cavity when the biexciton nonlinearity is taken into account. We reveal the nonmonotonous dependence of the second-order correlation function of the transmitted photons on the biexciton binding energy. We study theoretically nonradiative and radiative energy transfer between two localized quantum emitters, donor one (i.e. initially excited) and acceptor one (i.e. receiving the excitation). The rates of nonradiative and radiative processes are calculated depending on the spatial and spectral separation between donor and acceptor states and for different donor and acceptor lifetimes for typical parameters of semiconductor quantum dots. We find that the donor lifetime can be significantly modified only due to the nonradiative F\"orster energy transfer process at donor-acceptor separations $\sim 10~$nm (depending on the acceptor radiative lifetime) and for the energy detuning not larger than 1$\div$2 meV. The efficiency of the nonradiative F\"orster energy transfer process under these conditions is close to unity and decreases rapidly with the increase of donor-acceptor distance or energy detuning. At large donor-acceptor separations $>40~$nm the radiative corrections to the donor lifetime are comparable with nonradiative ones but are relatively weak., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to special issue of JETP

We study optical properties of arrays of ultrathin nanowires by means of the Brillouin scattering of light on magnons. We employ the Stokes/anti-Stokes scattering asymmetry to probe the circular polarization of a local electric field induced inside nanowires by linearly polarized light waves. We observe the anomalous polarization conversion of the opposite sign than that in a bulk medium or thick nanowires with a great enhancement of the degree of circular polarization attributed to an unconventional refraction in the nanowire medium., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Optical cavities, plasmonic structures, photonic band crystals, interfaces, as well as, generally speaking, any photonic media with homogeneous or spatially inhomogeneous dielectric permittivity (including metamaterials) have local densities of photonic states, which are different from that in vacuum. These modified density of states environments are known to control both the rate and angular distribution of spontaneous emission. In the present study, we ask the question whether the proximity to metallic and metamaterial surfaces can affect other physical phenomena of fundamental and practical importance. We show that the same substrates and the same nonlocal dielectric environments that boost spontaneous emission, also inhibit F\"orster energy transfer between donor and acceptor molecules doped into a thin polymeric film. This finding correlates with the fact that in dielectric media, the rate of spontaneous emission is proportional to the index of refraction n, while the rate of the donor-acceptor energy transfer (in solid solutions with random distribution of acceptors) is proportional to n^-1.5. We present a theory of the F\"orster energy transfer between the arrays of donor and acceptor molecules lying on the planar metallic mirror. We reveal strong modification of the effective transfer rate by the mirror in the incoherent pumping regime. The rate can be either suppressed or enhanced depending on the relative positions between acceptor and donor arrays. The Purcell effect - the modification of the spontaneous emission rate in presence of resonant cavities or other resonant objects - is a fundamental effect of quantum electrodynamics. However, a change of the emission rate caused by environment different from free space has a classical counterpart. Not only quantum emitters, but any small antenna tuned to the resonance is an oscillator with radiative losses, and the influence of the environment on its radiation can be understood and measured in terms of the antenna radiation resistance. We present a general approach which is applicable to measurements of the Purcell factor for radio antennas and to calculations of these factors for quantum emitters. Our methodology is suitable for calculation and measurement of both electric and magnetic Purcell factors, it is versatile and applies to various frequency ranges. The approach is illustrated by a general equivalent scheme and allows the Purcell factor to be expressed through the continious radiation of a small antenna in presence of the environment.
