Background: Polysubstance use is common among people who use methamphetamine. This prospective study examined the three-month polysubstance use profiles among people enrolled in outpatient treatment for methamphetamine use and associated substance use, mental health, and treatment correlates., Method: The present study used routinely collected client-reported outcome measures data from N  = 1,507 clients enrolled in outpatient treatment who reported methamphetamine as their primary drug of concern ( Mean age  = 34.48; SD = 8.68; 56% male). Past-month substance use was assessed at baseline, one-, and three-months., Findings: Repeated measures latent class analyses revealed four classes: (1) high and decreasing methamphetamine + stable moderate alcohol + stable high cannabis and daily tobacco ( n  = 474, 31.45%); (2) stable high methamphetamine + stable high alcohol and daily tobacco ( n  = 346, 22.96%); (3) low and decreasing methamphetamine + stable moderate daily tobacco ( n  = 322, 21.37%); (4) stable high methamphetamine + stable moderate daily tobacco ( n  = 365, 24.22%). Probability of using substances other than methamphetamine remained relatively stable for each class across time. Classes 1 and 4 had greatest severity of methamphetamine involvement at baseline and three-months. Class 1 had greater odds of experiencing moderate-to-severe depression and anxiety, and PTSD and psychosis, compared to class 3., Conclusion: Individuals enrolled in outpatient treatment who report methamphetamine as their primary drug of concern report distinct substance use patterns, although daily tobacco use was mostly ubiquitous. Polysubstance use was widespread, with 79% of participants having moderate-to-high probability of polysubstance use at all timepoints. Clients with the most severe polysubstance use had the highest rates of co-occurring psychopathology.

People living with HIV (HIV+) are roughly twice as likely to smoke cigarettes (Smok+) as the general population. With the advent of effective antiretroviral therapies, it is increasingly important to understand the effects of chronic HIV infection and cigarette smoking on brain function and cognition since HIV+ individuals have heightened neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits even with such therapies. Based on prior studies demonstrating that smoking reduces a marker for neuroinflammation in HIV- individuals, we hypothesized that HIV+/Smok+ individuals would have less neuroinflammation and better cognitive control than HIV+/Smok- individuals. Fifty-nine participants (HIV-/Smok- [n = 16], HIV-/Smok+ [n=14], HIV+/Smok- [n = 18], and HIV+/Smok+ [n = 11]) underwent baseline eligibility tests, positron emission tomography (PET) scanning to determine levels of a marker for neuroinflammation, and assessment of cognitive control with the reverse-translated 5-choice continuous performance test (5C-CPT), with smokers having smoked to satiety prior to testing. For the PET data, a significant effect of smoking status on whole brain (WB) standardized uptake value (SUV) was found between HIV+/Smok+ and HIV+/Smok- participants (due to 18.8% lower WB SUV in the HIV+/Smok+ group). HIV+/Smok- participants exhibited a mean 13.5% higher WB SUV than HIV-/Smok- participants. For the 5C-CPT, HIV+/Smok+ participants performed significantly better than HIV+/Smok- participants (d prime), and HIV+/Smok- participants performed worse than HIV-/Smok- participants. Thus, HIV+/Smok+ individuals demonstrated lower levels of the neuroinflammation marker and better cognitive control than HIV+/Smok- individuals. Introduction: To examine and compare age groups on socio-demographic, substance use, mental health, social and risk behaviour profiles of people entering alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment in a large non-government organisation (NGO) in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia., Methods: Design-Cross-sectional study; analysis of baseline routine outcome measures (ROM) and AOD minimum datasets for drug and alcohol treatment services. Setting and participants-People enrolling in Lives Lived Well, a large NGO AOD service between November 2020 and October 2022. Main outcome measures-Socio-demographic, substance use, mental health, social factors and risk behaviours, by youth (≤24 years), young adults (25-35 years) and adults (>35 years)., Results: Between November 2020 and October 2022, 9413 clients enrolled in Lives Lived Well (LLW) AOD services and completed baseline ROMs. Over one-fifth (21.9%) were youth (n = 2066), one-third (32.4%) were young adults (n = 3052) and just under half (45.6%) were adults >35 years (n = 4295). The most common primary drug of concern was cannabis for youth, methamphetamine for young adults and alcohol for adults >35 years. Nearly two-thirds (61.3%) reported moderate to severe symptoms of depression and 55.0% reported moderate to severe anxiety. Just under half (47.2%) screened positive for PTSD and two-in-five (40.4%) reported recent suicidal ideation. Co-occurring mental health symptoms were more common in youth compared with young adults and adults >35 years., Discussion and Conclusions: Co-occurring mental health symptoms were high in the sample, particularly among youth. Introduction: Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) and feedback is an evidence-supported strategy for evaluating alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment outcomes. However, the implementation of ROM and feedback into AOD services remains a significant challenge. Research aimed at understanding client perspectives on ROM and feedback is needed to facilitate successful implementation. This study examined experiences with and perceptions of ROM and feedback in a sample of clients receiving AOD treatment., Methods: Interviews and online surveys were conducted with N = 26 people (13 male; M age  = 36.12 years, SD = 10.29) enrolled in an AOD treatment program in Australia. Data analysis of the transcripts was guided by thematic analysis, while descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative survey data., Results: Four major themes were identified in the qualitative data: (i) ROM and feedback is valuable to AOD treatment; (ii) clear and concise outcome measures with an integrated feedback loop are vital to reliable ROM; (iii) desire for visual and verbal feedback that highlights progress; and (iv) ROM and feedback can be emotionally challenging., Discussion and Conclusions: Participants valued ROM when it was clearly integrated within AOD treatment and they received feedback on their responses. Objective: Emerging adulthood (18-25 years) is associated with peak prevalence of cannabis use. Although population-based longitudinal studies have found little change in cannabis use among emerging adults during COVID-19, research examining changes among vulnerable subgroups is lacking. The present study examined the association between emotion dysregulation at 23 years and change in cannabis use frequency and problem cannabis use among a large sample of emerging adults, from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic., Method: Longitudinal data were analyzed from 1,226 emerging adults (59% female; n = 738 reported cannabis use) who completed online surveys before the pandemic (2019; age 21) and 1 year into COVID-19 (2021; age 23) as part of the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development., Results: There was no significant overall within-person change in cannabis use outcomes during COVID-19 among the emerging adult sample. However, emotional clarity (a dimension of emotion dysregulation) at 23 years significantly moderated change in problem cannabis use during COVID-19. Namely, low emotional clarity at 23 years was associated with increased problem cannabis use ( B = 0.79, 95% CI [0.23, 1.34]), whereas high emotional clarity at 23 years was associated with decreased problem cannabis use ( B = -0.68, 95% CI [-1.27, -0.09]) during COVID-19, among men only., Conclusions: Findings highlight the need to consider changes in cannabis use during COVID-19 among emerging adults with elevated emotion dysregulation (and particularly, low emotional clarity among men) and reiterate the need for supports and targeted interventions to reduce cannabis use and decrease associated harms as society emerges from COVID-19.

Adverse environments are linked to elevated youth antisocial behavior. However, this relation is thought to depend, in part, on genetic susceptibility. The present study investigated whether polygenic risk for antisociality moderates relations between hostile environments and stable as well as dynamic antisocial behaviors across adolescence. We derived two antisocial-linked polygenic risk scores (PRS) ( N = 721) based on previous genome-wide association studies. Forms of antisocial behavior (nonaggressive conduct problems, physical aggression, social aggression) and environmental hostility (harsh parenting and school violence) were assessed at age 13, 15, and 17 years. Relations to individual differences stable across adolescence (latent stability) vs. time-specific states (timepoint residual variance) of antisocial behavior were assessed via structural equation models. Higher antisocial PRS, harsh parenting, and school violence were linked to stable elevations in antisocial behaviors across adolescence. We identified a consistent polygenic-environment interaction suggestive of differential susceptibility in late adolescence. At age 17, harsher parenting was linked to higher social aggression in those with higher antisocial PRS, and lower social aggression in those with lower antisocial PRS. This suggests that genetics and environmental hostility relate to stable youth antisocial behaviors, and that genetic susceptibility moderates home environment-antisocial associations specifically in late adolescence.

Background: In accordance with continuum and cognitive behaviour models of psychosis, cognitive biases precede the onset and the maintenance of positive symptoms. The Davos Assessment of Cognitive Biases Scale (DACOBS), a self-report measure, was developed to explore the prevalence of specific cognitive biases. This study aims to validate the French version of this instrument., Methods: We first translated the English version of the DACOBS into French. Then, using a sample of 213 French speaking young adults (mean age = 20.54, SD = 1.65; 83% females), we examined the factor structure, internal consistency, concurrent, and convergent validities of the current version., Results: We found an 18-item, four-factor version of the French DACOBS comprising external attribution bias (five items), social cognition problems (five items), subjective cognition problems (five items), and safety behaviours (five items), provided best fit-to-data. Internal consistency for the resulting subscales ranged from acceptable to excellent (Cronbach's α range = .62-.86). All subscales were significantly, positively associated with a measure of psychotic-like experiences and positively associated with established measures of theoretically relevant constructs, demonstrating concurrent and convergent validity of the French DACOBS., Conclusions: The French DACOBS is a reliable and valid and reliable instrument assessing cognitive biases, in a French-speaking youth population. This study used symptom dimensions reflecting DSM-V internalizing, externalizing, eating disorders, and substance use (SU) and related problems to thoroughly investigate the structure of psychopathology in mid-adolescence (15 and 17 years, N = 1,515, 52% female). Compared to other hierarchical configurations (unidimensional, correlated factors, or higher-order model), a bifactor model of psychopathology wherein all first-order symptom dimensions loaded onto a second-order general psychopathology factor (P factor) and one of three, second-order specific internalizing, externalizing, or SU factors, best captured the structure of the psychopathology in mid-adolescence. This bifactor model was then used to predict several distinct mental health disorders and alcohol use disorder (AUD) at 20 years, via a structural equation model (SEM). The P factor (bifactor model) was associated with all but one outcome (suicidal ideation without an attempt), at 20 years. Controlling for the P factor, there were no additional, positive, temporal cross-associations (i.e., between mental health (mid-adolescence) and AUD at 20 years, or between SU (mid-adolescence) and mental health problems at 20 years). These results are bolstered by findings from a well-fitting correlated factors model. Namely, when mid-adolescent psychopathology was modeled using an adjusted correlated factors model, associations with outcomes at 20 years were largely masked, with no significant partial, temporal cross-associations. Thus, collectively, findings indicate that comorbidity between SU and mental health in youth may be largely attributable to an underlying liability to experience both problems (i.e., P factor). Aims: Internalizing symptoms are theorized to lead to substance use (SU) via a tendency to use substances to cope with or self-medicate negative feelings and emotions; however, empirically, this association is mixed, pointing to the existence of moderating factors. The present study aimed to examine how self-, teacher-, and father-reported attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms (ADHD-HI) and sex, moderated the association between self-reported internalizing symptoms and SU, in early adolescence., Methods: Cross-sectional data obtained at 13 years of age, drawn from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (N = 1,424; 53 % female). Alcohol, cigarette, and cannabis use, and internalizing and ADHD-HI symptoms were assessed., Results: There was a significant three-way interaction between internalizing, ADHD-HI, and sex, for cigarette use, with Bayes factor (BF) indicating very strong evidence for an effect (BF = 48.40). While the three-way interaction for cannabis use did not reach statistical significance (self-report: p <.066; father-report: p <.053), BF indicated substantial evidence for an effect (self-report: BF = 3.54; father-report: BF = 9.08). Further analyses revealed internalizing was associated with cigarette and cannabis use only among females with high ADHD-HI symptoms (cigarette use: β = 0.15, SE = 0.04, 95 %CI [0.07, 0.22]; cannabis use (self-reported ADHD-HI): β = 0.14, SE = 0.06, 95 %CI [0.04, 0.25]; cannabis use (father-reported ADHD-HI): β = 0.21, SE = 0.10, 95 %CI [0.01, 0.41])., Conclusions: Findings aid in clarifying the inconsistent relationship between internalizing symptoms and SU among adolescent females by underscoring the moderating role of ADHD-HI. Objective: Prospective research is needed to better-understand changes in substance use from before to during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, among emerging adults (18-25 years), a high-risk group for substance use., Method: N = 1,096 (weighted sample N = 1,080; 54% female) participants enrolled in the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, who completed prepandemic (2019; 21 years) and COVID-19 (mid-March to mid-June 2020) surveys. COVID-19-related and preexisting factors were examined as moderators of change in substance use., Results: Full sample analyses revealed decreased binge drinking ( p < .001, Bayes factor [BF] = 22, Cohen's f ² = 0.02), but no changes in alcohol and cannabis use. Stratified analyses revealed emerging adults who reported < monthly use prepandemic increased their alcohol use ( p < .001, BF > 150, f ² = 0.05) and binge drinking ( p < .001, BF = 27, f ² = 0.01), but not their cannabis use. Conversely, emerging adults who reported >monthly use prepandemic decreased their binge drinking ( p < .001, BF > 150, f ² = .12) and cannabis use ( p < .001, BF > 150, f ² = .06), but did not change their alcohol use frequency. Several factors moderated change in substance use, including employment loss ( p = .005, BF > 39, f ² = .03) and loneliness ( p = .018, BF > 150, f ² = .10) during COVID-19., Conclusions: Changes in alcohol and cannabis use frequency among emerging adults in the first 3 months of COVID-19 largely differed according to prepandemic substance use, COVID-19-related factors, and preexisting factors. While some youth with preexisting vulnerabilities (e.g., more frequent substance use prepandemic) remained stable or decreased their substance use during COVID-19, emerging adults who experienced employment loss, loneliness, and financial concerns during COVID-19 increased their substance use, highlighting the need for increased supports for vulnerable populations. Introduction: Transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) targets common psychological factors that underlie multiple disorders. While transdiagnostic interventions are a promising new approach, limited research has evaluated these treatments within the alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector for young people with comorbid mental health symptoms. This project will examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of FullFix-a new risk-targeted transdiagnostic CBT telehealth programme for comorbid AOD and depression/anxiety disorders in young people. Secondary aims are to identify moderators and mediators of treatment outcomes, to determine how and why treatment is effective and who is most likely to benefit., Methods/design: Participants will be 130 young people (aged 16-35) accessing AOD services in Queensland, Australia, with comorbid mental health symptoms. They will be randomised to receive either the FullFix intervention plus standard AOD care or standard AOD care alone. Primary outcomes on AOD use and mental health symptoms will be reassessed at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months, along with secondary outcomes of emotion regulation, social connectedness, perceived self-efficacy, coping skills and quality of life. Background: Older adults (≥50 years) represent the fastest-growing population of people who use cannabis, potentially due to the increasing promotion of cannabis as medicine by dispensaries and cannabis websites. Given healthy aging and cannabis use are both associated with cognitive decline, it is important to establish the effects of cannabis on cognition in healthy aging., Objective: This systematic scoping review used preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines to critically examine the extent of literature on this topic and highlight areas for future research., Method: A search of six databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Family and Society Studies Worldwide, and CINAHL) for articles published by September 2019, yielded 1,014 unique results., Results: Six articles reported findings for older populations (three human and three rodent studies), highlighting the paucity of research in this area. Human studies revealed largely null results, likely due to several methodological limitations. Better-controlled rodent studies indicate that the relationship between ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cognitive function in healthy aging depends on age and level of THC exposure. Extremely low doses of THC improved cognition in very old rodents. Somewhat higher chronic doses improved cognition in moderately aged rodents. No studies examined the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) or high-CBD cannabis on cognition., Conclusions: This systematic scoping review provides crucial, timely direction for future research on this emerging issue. Background and Aims: Recent meta-analyses of motivational interviewing (MI) for reducing risky alcohol use in young people have reported modest effects. Few studies have targeted individual patient factors to increase MI effectiveness. This study determined if MI enhanced with individualised personality-specific coping skills training (QuikFix) was more efficacious than standard MI or an assessment feedback/information (AF/I) control among young people with alcohol-related injuries or illnesses., Design and Setting: Single-centre, single-blind, three-group superiority randomized controlled trial with 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-months follow-ups. Telephone intervention, Brisbane, Australia., Participants: A total of 398 young people (16-25 years; M age = 20.30 years, SD = 2.12; 54% female) with alcohol-related injuries and/or illnesses were recruited from an emergency department (ED) or rest/recovery service (RRS)., Measures: The primary outcome was total standard (10 g ethanol) drinks in the past month (Timeline Follow back [TLFB]) at 12 months (primary time point). Secondary outcomes were total drinking days and standard drinks per drinking day (TLFB) in the past month and the frequency of alcohol-related problems in the past 3 months (Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index)., Interventions: Young people were randomized to two sessions of QuikFix enhanced with individualised personality-specific coping skills training (n = 132), two sessions of MI (n = 136) or one session of AF/I (n = 130), all delivered by telehealth., Findings: QuikFix resulted in greater reductions (all P < 0.0017) in the primary outcome of total standard drinks (M = 19.50, CI 99.75% = [11.31, 27.68]) than both MI (M = 32.61, CI 99.75% = [24.82, 40.40]; Cohen's D = 0.40) and AF/I (M = 34.12, CI 99.75% = [26.59, 41.65]; D = 0.45) at 12 months (retention n = 324/398, 81%). QuikFix had greater reductions on drinking days (M = 3.16, CI 99.75% = [2.37, 3.96]) than both MI (M = 4.53, CI 99.75% = [3.57, 5.48];D = 0.38) and AF/I (M = 4.69, CI 99.75% = [3.73, 5.65];D = 0.42) and fewer drinks per drinking day (M = 5.02, CI 99.75% = [3.71, 6.33]) than AF/I (M = 7.15, CI 99.75% = [5.93, 8.38;D = 0.47) at 12 months., Conclusions: Young people with alcohol-related injuries and/or illnesses who attended ED and rest/recovery services and received an individualised personality-specific coping skills training intervention (QuikFix) had greater reductions in the amount of alcohol consumed at 12 months compared with those who received motivational interviewing or an assessment feedback/information intervention., (© 2020 Society for the Study of Addiction.)

Bipolar disorder (BD) and cannabis use are highly comorbid and are each associated with cognitive impairment.  Given the prevalence of cannabis use in people with BD, it is important to understand whether the two interact to impact cognitive function. We performed a systematic scoping review to determine what is currently known in this field. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for studies on the relationship between cannabis use and cognition in people with BD or relevant animal models. Six observational human studies and no animal studies met inclusion criteria. Two studies found cannabis use in BD was associated with better performance in some cognitive domains, while three studies found no association. One study found cannabis use in BD was associated with worse overall cognition. Overall, most identified studies suggest cannabis use is not associated with significant cognitive impairment in BD; however, the scope of knowledge in this field is limited, and more systematic studies are clearly required. Future studies should focus on longitudinal and experimental trials, and well-controlled observational studies with rigorous quantification of the onset, frequency, quantity, duration, and type of cannabis use, as well as BD illness features., (Copyright © 2020. Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorders persist in the era of antiretroviral therapy. One factor that is elevated among persons with HIV (PWH) and independently associated with neurocognitive impairment is methamphetamine dependence (METH). Such dependence may further increase cognitive impairment among PWH, by delaying HIV diagnosis (and thus, antiretroviral therapy initiation), which has been posited to account for persistent cognitive impairment among PWH, despite subsequent treatment-related viral load suppression (VLS; <50 copies of the virus per milliliter in plasma or cerebrospinal fluid). This study examined the main and interactive (additive versus synergistic) effects of HIV and history of METH on the sustained attention and vigilance cognitive domain, while controlling for VLS., Methods: Participants included 205 (median age = 44 years; 77% males; HIV-/METH- n = 67; HIV+/METH - n = 49; HIV-/METH+ n = 36; HIV+/METH+ n = 53) individuals enrolled in the Translational Methamphetamine AIDS Research Center, who completed Conners' and the 5-Choice continuous performance tests (CPTs)., Results: METH participants exhibited deficits in sustained attention and vigilance; however, these effects were not significant after excluding participants who had a positive urine toxicology screen for methamphetamine. Controlling for VLS, PWH did not have worse sustained attention and vigilance, but consistently displayed slower reaction times across blocks, relative to HIV- participants. There was no HIV x METH interaction on sustained attention and vigilance., Conclusions: Recent methamphetamine use among METH people and detectable viral loads are detrimental to sustained attention and vigilance. Objective: Social anxiety has been linked to problem drinking in young people. Identifying moderators of this relationship will aid the development of effective interventions for this at-risk group. This cross-sectional study examined whether anticipated social outcomes and controlled drinking self-efficacy moderated the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol outcomes., Method: A total of 385 participants (drinkers and nondrinkers; mean age = 20.98, SD = 2.35; 65% female; 81% born in Australia), completed an online survey measuring alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harms, social anxiety, anticipated social outcomes, and controlled drinking self-efficacy. Regressions examined the interactive effects of social anxiety, anticipated social outcomes, and controlled drinking self-efficacy on alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harms., Results: A significant three-way interaction was found for alcohol consumption (95% CI [-0.523, -0.018]). Simple slopes revealed an inverse relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption when participants anticipated positive evaluations for being drunk and had high controlled drinking self-efficacy (95% CI [-1.181, -0.273]). The three-way interaction for alcohol-related harms was not significant (95% CI [-1.445, 0.799]). A significant two-way interaction revealed that the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related harms was only significant when individuals had low (95% CI [0.571, 3.943]), but not high (95% CI [-1.149, 0.735]), controlled drinking self-efficacy., Conclusions: Social anxiety was associated with reduced alcohol consumption when young people anticipated positive evaluations for being drunk and had high confidence to control their drinking. Further, social anxiety was associated with alcohol-related harms when young people had low confidence to control their drinking. Interventions for alcohol use among socially anxious young people could focus on increasing confidence to control drinking.

Problem gambling causes significant harm to individuals and society. Financial losses from gambling in Australia exceed those anywhere else in the world. Problem gamblers are overrepresented among substance users and rural and remote Australians. Limited research exists on the impact of gambling advertising on problem gambling among those seeking substance use treatment, in rural/remote areas, and protective factors that may guard against these impacts. This study examined whether self-efficacy to control gambling moderated the relationship between the perceived impact of gambling advertising and problem gambling in people seeking treatment for substance use. Participants (N = 198, 60% female) who had recently sought treatment for substance use from services in rural/remote areas of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, completed an anonymous online survey. Problem gambling severity was measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index, with 30% of participants showing at least moderate-risk problem gambling behaviors (12% moderate-risk gambling, 18% high-risk gambling). Moderated regression analyses found self-efficacy to control gambling significantly moderated the relationship between the perceived impacts of gambling advertising and the severity of problem gambling. At low levels of self-efficacy to control gambling, higher perceived impacts of advertising on gambling involvement and awareness were associated with higher levels of problem gambling behavior. However, at high levels of self-efficacy to control gambling, the association between problem gambling and impact of gambling advertising was weaker for involvement and not significant for awareness. Findings suggest that self-efficacy could be targeted as a treatment option to protect vulnerable groups from the effects of gambling advertising. Introduction and Aims: Many young people engage in risky partying behaviours and excessive alcohol use in the transition period following high school graduation. Despite this, there is limited longitudinal research on adolescents before and after school graduation; and limited evaluation of interventions targeting these high-risk periods. The present study aims to address this gap in the literature by examining the impact of brief psychoeducation interventions on substance use, psychological distress and well-being during this important life transition., Design and Methods: Participants were 334 high school leavers (53% female, M age  = 17.14) from Queensland, Australia. They received either: (i) a psychoeducation intervention on safe partying behaviours; (ii) a reconstructed version of the psychoeducation intervention; or (iii) a standard health curriculum control. Surveys were conducted at baseline; 2 weeks, immediately following post-graduation celebratory event 'Schoolies'; and 4 months, immediately following university orientation 'O-week'., Results: Significant time by group effects were found for problem drinking, F(2, 227) = 3.07, P < 0.05, and well-being, F(4, 439) = 3.54, P < 0.01. There was stability in problem drinking from baseline to follow-up for the psychoeducation groups but small increases in problem drinking for the control (d = 0.12). Both psychoeducation groups had improvements in well-being scores from baseline to post-Schoolies (d = 0.40; 0.20), which were maintained across time. In contrast, the control condition showed a decrease in well-being scores from baseline to the post O-week follow-up (d = 0.15)., Discussion and Conclusions: Brief school-based psychoeducational interventions may result in small improvements in well-being, and possibly stabilise the trajectory of problematic drinking in high-risk environments., (© 2019 Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs.)

Aims: (1) To classify Australian adolescents according to their alcohol consumption trajectories; and (2) to assess the direct and interactive effects of perceived peer drinking (PPD) and personality on adolescent drinking., Design: Prospective cohort study comprising secondary analysis of six waves of prospective data (collected between 2014 and 2016) from the control arm of the Climate Schools Combined Study., Setting: Nineteen schools across three Australian states., Participants: A total of 1492 socio-demographically diverse students (mean age at baseline: 13.47; 68% female; 82% born in Australia)., Measurements: Alcohol consumption trajectories were assessed using self-reported sipping of alcohol, full standard drink consumption, binge drinking and quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption. One item assessed PPD and personality was assessed using the Substance Use Risk Profile Scale., Findings: Eight hundred and sixty-four (58%) adolescents consumed alcohol across the study period. Four drinking trajectories were identified: abstaining (n = 513; reference group); onset (n = 361; initiated after baseline); persistent (n = 531; initiated prior to baseline); and decreasing (n = 50; consumed alcohol at baseline but ceased or decreased thereafter). A significant PPD × anxiety sensitivity (AS) interaction affected probability of belonging to the onset (P < 0.001) and persistent (P = 0.003) trajectories. The effect of PPD on probability of belonging to the onset trajectory was only significant when adolescents reported low [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.464-2.646, P < 0.001], but not high AS. The effect of PPD on probability of belonging to the persistent drinking trajectory was stronger at low (95% CI = 2.144-3.283, P < 0.001), compared with high (95% CI = 1.440-2.308, P < 0.001) AS., Conclusions: In Australian adolescents, self-reported drinking onset and persistent drinking appear to be more strongly associated with perceived peer drinking in those with low anxiety sensitivity than those with high anxiety sensitivity., (© 2018 Society for the Study of Addiction.)

Early adolescent drinking has been identified as an important risk factor for the development of alcohol dependence. Both perceived peer drinking and personality profiles have been implicated as risk factors for early adolescent drinking. However, research is yet to determine how these 2 factors may interact to increase such risk. This study aimed to determine whether personality profiles moderated the relationship between perceived peer drinking and early adolescent drinking. Baseline data were utilized in the analyses, from 3,287 adolescents (M age = 13.51 years, SD = .58; 54% female; 78% born in Australia) participating in the Climate Schools Combined Study (a cluster randomized controlled trial with 75 schools located across Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia, Australia). Lifetime consumption of alcohol, perceived peer drinking, and personality profiles (Substance Use Risk Profile Scale) were measured. A moderated binary logistic regression found the personality profiles of impulsivity, sensation seeking, and hopelessness were positively related to early adolescent drinking, whereas anxiety sensitivity had a negative association. A significant interaction revealed that adolescents with higher levels of sensation seeking and who perceived their peers to be drinking were significantly more likely to report early adolescent drinking (consumption of a full standard drink; OR = 1.043; 95% CI [1.018-1.069]). These results indicate that perception of peer drinking is more strongly associated with early adolescent drinking, when adolescents are also high on sensation seeking. Prevention and intervention programs could consider targeting both sensation seeking and perceived peer drinking in adolescents. (PsycINFO Database Record, ((c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved).)
