Abstract

Cyanoacetylene, the simplest cyanopolyyne, is an abundant interstellar molecule commonly observed in a vast variety of astronomical sources. Despite its importance as a potential tracer of the evolution of star-forming processes, the deuterated form of cyanoacetylene is less observed and less studied in the laboratory than the main isotopologue. Here, we report the most extensive spectroscopic characterization of DC$_3$N to date, from the millimeter domain to the infrared region. Rotational and ro-vibrational spectra have been recorded using millimeter-wave frequency-modulation and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometers, respectively. All the vibrational states with energy up to 1015 cm$^{-1}$ have been analyzed in a combined fit, where the effects due to anharmonic resonances have been adequately accounted for. The analysis contains over 6500 distinct transition frequencies, from which all the vibrational energies have been determined with good precision for many fundamental, overtone, and combination states. Abstract

Deuterium fractionation processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) have been shown to be highly efficient in the family of nitrogen hydrides. To date, observations were limited to ammonia (NH$_2$D, NHD$_2$, ND$_3$) and imidogen radical (ND) isotopologues. We want to explore the high frequency windows offered by the \emph{Herschel Space Observatory} to search for deuterated forms of amidogen radical NH$_2$ and to compare the observations against the predictions of our comprehensive gas-grain chemical model. Making use of the new molecular spectroscopy data recently obtained at high frequencies for NHD and ND$_2$, both isotopologues have been searched for in the spectral survey towards the class 0 IRAS 16293-2422, a source in which NH$_3$, NH and their deuterated variants have been previously detected. We used the observations carried out with HIFI (Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared) in the framework of the key program "Chemical Herschel surveys of star forming regions" (CHESS). We report the first detection of interstellar NHD and ND$_2$. Both species are observed in absorption against the continuum of the protostar. From the analysis of their hyperfine structure, accurate excitation temperature and column density values have been determined. The latter were combined with the column density of the parent species NH$_2$ to derive the deuterium fractionation in amidogen. The amidogen D/H ratio measured in the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422 is comparable to the one derived for the related species imidogen and much higher than that observed for ammonia. Additional observations of these species will give more insights into the mechanism of ammonia formation and deuteration in the ISM. Abstract

Aminoacetonitrile, a molecule detected in the interstellar medium only towards the star-forming region Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) thus far, is considered an important prebiotic species. To date, observations were limited to ground state emission lines, whereas transitions from within vibrationally excited states remained undetected. We wanted to accurately determine the energies of the low-lying vibrational states of aminoacetonitrile, which are expected to be populated in Sgr B2(N1), the main hot core of Sgr B2(N). This step is fundamental in order to properly evaluate the vibration-rotation partition function of aminoacetonitrile as well as the line strengths of the rotational transitions of its vibrationally excited states. This is necessary to derive accurate column densities and secure the identification of these transitions in astronomical spectra. The far-infrared ro-vibrational spectrum of aminoacetonitrile has been recorded in absorption against a synchrotron source of continuum emission. Three bands, corresponding to the lowest vibrational modes of aminoacetonitrile, were observed in the frequency region below 500 cm$^{-1}$. The combined analysis of ro-vibrational and pure rotational data allowed us to prepare new spectral line catalogs for all the states under investigation. We used the imaging spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with ALMA to search for vibrationally excited aminoacetonitrile toward Sgr B2(N1). On the basis of these spectroscopic predictions, we report the interstellar detection of aminoacetonitrile in its $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ vibrational states toward Sgr B2(N1) in addition to emission in its vibrational ground state. The intensities of the identified $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ lines are consistent with the detected $v=0$ lines under LTE at a temperature of 200 K for an aminoacetonitrile column density of $1.1 \times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Molecular lasers pumped by quantum cascade laser (QCL) open new possibilities for THz generation and its numerous applications, in particular, for high resolution molecular spectroscopy. In this article, a THz water laser pumped by a mid-infrared QCL was demonstrated using the broad tunability of the pump laser. Twenty D 2 O laser lines were measured under a continuous wave pumping regime, in a spectral range expending from 63 to 177 cm − 1 (1.9–5.3 THz), and with an output power ranging from tens to hundreds of μ W. This letter contains a description of the experimental setup used to produce the THz laser radiation and a comparison of the measured output power with a molecular gain factor used to sort out the most favorable laser lines. In addition to the measured laser transitions, a complete list of laser frequencies together with their corresponding molecular gain is given in the supplementary material, for both H 2 O and D 2 O isotopologues excited in their bending and stretching vibrational states. Abstract

Frequency combs (FC) have radically changed the landscape of frequency metrology and high-resolution spectroscopy investigations extending tremendously the achievable resolution while increasing signal to noise ratio. Initially developed in the visible and near-IR spectral regions, the use of FC has been expanded to mid-IR, extreme ultra-violet and X-ray. Significant effort is presently dedicated to the generation of FC at THz frequencies. One solution based on converting a stabilized optical frequency comb using a photoconductive terahertz emitter, remains hampered by the low available THz power. Another approach is based on active mode locked THz quantum-cascade-lasers providing intense FC over a relatively limited spectral extension. Alternatively, here we show that dense powerful THz FC is generated over one decade of frequency by coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In this mode, the entire ring behaves in a similar fashion to a THz resonator wherein electron bunches emit powerful THz pulses quasi-synchronously. This FC presents unprecedented spectral characteristics and opens new perspectives for metrology investigations.

Abstract

The presence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules in the interstellar medium, recently confirmed by the detection of cyano-naphthalenes, has renewed the interest of extensive spectroscopic and physical-chemistry studies on such large species. The present study reports the jet-cooled rovibrational infrared study of three centrosymmetric two-ring PAH molecules, viz., naphthalene (C10H8), [1,5] naphthyridine (C8H6N2), and biphenyl (C12H10), in the in-plane ring C–H bending (975–1035 cm−1) and C–C ring stretching (1580–1620 cm−1) regions. For the two most rigid PAHs, the accuracy of spectroscopic parameters derived in ground and several excited states (six for naphthalene and six for [1,5] naphthyridine) has significantly improved the literature values. In addition, comparison between experiments and quantum chemical calculations confirms the predictive power of the corrected calculated rotational parameters. The more flexible structure of biphenyl makes the analysis of high resolution jet-cooled spectra of ν19 and ν23 modes recorded at about 1601 and 1013 cm−1, respectively, particularly challenging. The presence of three torsional vibrations below 120 cm−1 together with small values of the rotational constants prevented us from determining the ground and v19 = 1 excited rotational constants independently. In the ν23 band region, the presence of two bands rotationally resolved and separated by only 0.8 cm−1 raises the question of possible splittings due to a large amplitude motion, most probably the torsion of the aliphatic bond between the two phenyl rings. Abstract

The (sub-)millimeter wave spectrum of the non-rigid CH2OH radical is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Ab initio calculations are carried out to quantitatively characterize its potential energy surface as a function of the two large amplitude ∠H1COH and ∠H2COH dihedral angles. It is shown that the radical displays a large amplitude torsional-like motion of its CH2 group with respect to the OH group. The rotation–torsion levels computed with the help of a 4D Hamiltonian accounting for this torsional-like motion and for the overall rotation exhibit a tunneling splitting, in agreement with recent experimental investigations, and a strong rotational dependence of this tunneling splitting on the rotational quantum number Ka due to the rotation–torsion Coriolis coupling. Based on an internal axis method approach, a fitting Hamiltonian accounting for tunneling effects and for the fine and hyperfine structure is built and applied to the fitting of the new (sub)-millimeter wave transitions measured in this work along with previously available high-resolution data. 778 frequencies and wavenumbers are reproduced with a unitless standard deviation of 0.79 using 27 parameters. The N = 0 tunneling splitting, which could not be determined unambiguously in the previous high-resolution investigations, is determined based on its rotational dependence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The far-infrared spectrum of HC3N has been recorded at high resolution between 70 and 500 cm−1using synchrotron radiation. Four prominent features, i.e., ν7, ν6−ν7, ν4−ν6, and 2ν7 have been identified in the spectrum together with many associated hot bands. In addition, rotational transitions for the interacting v4=v7=1, (v6=2,v7=1), (v5=1,v7=2), and v7=5 vibrationally excited states have been recorded in the millimeter/submillimeter region. The newly assigned transitions, together with those reported previously, form a comprehensive data set including about 17 000 transitions, which involves almost all the vibrational states of HC3N lying below 1300 cm−1 plus some excited states with energies between 2075 and 3550 cm−1. These data have been fitted to an effective Hamiltonian which takes into account rotational and vibrational l-type resonance effects, together with a number of anharmonic interaction terms. On average, all the analysed data are reproduced within the experimental accuracy. About 90 000 rotational and ro-vibrational transition frequencies have been computed on the basis of the spectroscopic constants obtained from the global fit in order to support data interpretation and astronomical searches in the interstellar medium and planetary atmospheres. Part of these data is included in the 2020 release of the HITRAN database.

Abstract

Observations of ammonia in interstellar environments have revealed high levels of deuteration, and all its D-containing variants, including ND$_3$, have been detected in cold prestellar cores and around young protostars. The observation of these deuterated isotopologues is very useful to elucidate the chemical and physical processes taking place during the very early stages of star formation, as the abundance of deuterated molecules is highly enhanced in dense and cold gas. Nitrogen hydride radicals are key species lying at the very beginning of the reaction pathway leading to the formation of NH$_3$ and organic molecules of pre-biotic interest, but relatively little information is known about their D-bearing isotopologues. To date, only ND has been detected in the interstellar gas. To aid the identification of further deuterated nitrogen radicals, we have thoroughly re-investigated the rotational spectrum of NHD employing two different instruments: a frequency-modulation submillimetre spectrometer operating in the THz region and a synchrotron-based Fourier Transform infrared spectrometer operating in the 50-240 cm$^{-1}$ wavelength range. NHD was produced in a plasma of NH$_3$ and D$_2$. A wide range of rotational energy levels has been probed thanks to the observation of high $N$ (up to 15) and high $K_a$ (up to 9) transitions. A global analysis including our new data and those already available in the literature has provided a comprehensive set of very accurate spectroscopic parameters. We have recorded the high-resolution emission spectrum of the Herman infrared band ([C'.sup.5][Π.sub.ui]-[A'.sup.5][Σ.sup.+.sub.g] system of [N.sub.2] in the 8000-15000 [cm.sup.-1] range from an experimental set-up coupling a corona discharge with a supersonic expansion. The analysis of four new bands has permitted us to determine spectroscopic parameters of the v' = 0 and v' = 1 vibrational levels of the [C'.sup.5][Π.sub.ui] state and to study the vibrational dependence of the molecular parameters over the range v' = 0 to v' = 4. In particular, the values of the spin-orbit coupling and the Λ-doubling parameters are discussed.
