This research characterized the traditional knowledge on the use and management of wildlife in the Nahuatl community of Santa Catarina, Morelos, Mexico. A qualitative methodology was used, applying ethnozoological research techniques such as semi-structured interviews (n = 55), ethnographic observation, and guided tours with local experts. In addition, the Cultural Importance Index (IIC) was calculated for each species used. A total of 41 species from different phyla were recorded, which are part of the tangible and intangible cultural manifestations of the Nahuas. Eleven categories of use are reported, of which nutritional (n = 57.5 %), forecast (n = 25 %), medicinal (n = 22.5 %) and legends (n = 12.5 %) recorded the higher percentage of species. The wild animals with the highest IIC were the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; 16.8), the field rabbit (Sylvilagus cunicularius; 13.6), the huilota (Zenaida macroura; 10.9), the rattlesnake (Crotalus culminatus; 12.8) and the winged ant (gynes and males of Atta mexicana; 10.8). Obtaining wildlife resources is done through individual or group gathering and hunting with firearms and traditional weapons in forest areas and agroecosystems within their territory. Wild fauna is a renewable natural resource that has a socio-cultural importance for the Nahua inhabitants because it is part of their subsistence strategies and cosmology: it provides them with raw materials for material needs, but also has symbolic representations associated with animals in traditional medicine, the practice of hunting and in the narratives of oral tradition., Se caracterizó el conocimiento tradicional sobre el uso y manejo de la fauna silvestre en la comunidad Náhuatl de Santa Catarina, Morelos, México. Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa, aplicando técnicas de investigación etnozoológicas como entrevistas semiestructuradas (n=55), observación etnográfica y recorridos guiados con expertos locales. Además, se calculó el Índice de Importancia Cultural (IIC) de cada especie utilizada. Se registraron 41 especies de diversos phyla, los cuales forman parte de las manifestaciones culturales tangibles e intangibles de los nahuas. Se reportan once categorías de uso, de las cuales la alimentaria (n=57,5 %), pronosticadora (n=25 %), medicinal (n=22,5 %) y leyendas (n=12,5 %), registraron el mayor porcentaje de especies. Los animales silvestres con mayor IIC fueron el venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus; 16,8), el conejo de campo (Sylvilagus cunicularius; 13,6), la huilota (Zenaida macroura; 10,9), la víbora de cascabel (Crotalus culminatus; 12,8) y la “hormiga con alas” (reproductores de Atta mexicana; 10,8). La obtención de los recursos faunísticos se realiza mediante la recolección y la cacería individual o grupal con armas de fuego y métodos tradicionales usados en áreas forestales y agroecosistemas dentro de su territorio. La fauna silvestre es un recurso natural renovable que tiene una importancia sociocultural para los habitantes nahuas porque forma parte de sus estrategias de subsistencia y cosmovisión, al proveerlos de materias primas para necesidades materiales, pero también por poseer representaciones simbólicas asociadas a los animales en la medicina tradicional, la práctica de la cacería y en narrativas de la tradición oral.

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is an important resource for rural communities for the goods it contributes to peasant and indigenous families. The objective of the research was to analyze the traditional knowledge and nutritional value of O. virginianus in the community of Pitzotlán, Morelos, Mexico. In-depth interviews were applied to eleven hunters, participant observation and guided tours. For the nutritional analysis of venison, techniques from the Official Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC International) were used. Local hunters recognize different aspects of the biology of the species such as feeding habits, sexual dimorphism, breeding season and social behavior. Three hunting techniques are recorded: "arreadas" (100 %), "espiadas" (100 %) and "lampareadas" (54 %), which are practiced in agricultural and forest areas of low deciduous forest. The "arreadas" as a collective practice for hunting deer, are conceived as spaces for recreation and community socialization. The categories of use registered were in the following proportions: food, medicinal and ornamental (100 %), tool (45 %), amulet (10 %) and sale (10 %). The main forms of preparation were "guaxmole", barbecue, "asadura", dried meat, fried meat, and steaks. Venison meat (dry basis) reported 75.14 g / 100 g of protein and 7.88 g / 100 g of total minerals. The white-tailed deer is an important wildlife resource for the rural families of Pitzotlán because the traditional knowledge about its appropriation has a role in their diet, health, worldview, and community life., El venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus), es un recurso importante para las comunidades rurales por los bienes que aporta a las familias campesinas e indígenas. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar el conocimiento tradicional y el valor nutricional de O. virginianus en la comunidad de Pitzotlán, Morelos, México. Se aplicaron entrevistas a profundidad a once cazadores, observación participante y recorridos guiados. Para el análisis nutricional de la carne de venado se emplearon técnicas de la Asociación Oficial de Químicos Analíticos (AOAC International). Los cazadores locales reconocen diferentes aspectos de la biología de la especie como hábitos alimentarios, dimorfismo sexual, época de reproducción y comportamiento social. Se registran tres técnicas de cacería: “arreadas” (100 %), “espiadas” (100 %) y “lampareadas” (54 %), las cuales se practican en áreas agrícolas y forestales de selva baja caducifolia. Las “arreadas” como practica colectiva para la cacería del venado, son concebidas como espacios de recreación y socialización comunitaria. Las categorías de uso registradas fueron en las siguientes proporciones: alimentario, medicinal y ornamental (100 %), herramienta (45 %), amuleto (10 %) y venta (10 %). Las principales formas de preparación fueron el “guaxmole”, barbacoa, “asadura”, carne seca, carne frita y bistecs. La carne de venado (base seca) reportó 75,14 gr/100 gr de proteínas y 7,88 gr/100 gr de minerales totales. El venado cola blanca es un recurso faunístico importante para las familias campesinas de Pitzotlán, debido a que los conocimientos tradicionales sobre su apropiación tienen una función en su alimentación, salud, cosmovisión y vida comunitaria.
