Developing and investigating advanced multifunctional materials with magnetic properties as candidates for assembling spin qubits for quantum computing is imperative. A new polytopic ligand based on oxamate and aniline was used to promote the synthesis of three neutral homometallic lanthanide-coordinated polymers. New complexes with the formula {Ln(phox) 3 (DMSO) 2 (H 2 O)} n , where Ln = Eu 3+ (1), Gd 3+ (2), and Tb 3+ (3) [phox = N -(phenyl)oxamate and DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide], were synthesized and well characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallographic analysis. All crystalline structures comprise neutral zigzag chains. The lanthanide ions are linked by three phox ligands, in which two oxygen atoms from two different ligands are responsible for connecting the trivalent lanthanide ions, and one phox ligand completes the coordination sphere in a bis-bidentate mode, together with two DMSO molecules and one water coordination molecule. The coordination sphere of lanthanide ions consisted of spherical capped square antiprism (CSAPR-9) symmetry. The magnetic properties of 1-3 were investigated in the 2-300 K temperature range. The dynamic (ac) magnetic properties of 2 reveal a frequency dependence involving the phonon bottleneck mechanism below 33 K under nonzero applied dc magnetic fields, resulting in an example of a field-induced single-molecule magnet. Solid-state photophysical measurements for Eu 3+ (1) and Tb 3+ (3) complexes indicate that the N -(phenyl)oxamate ligands are very efficient in sensitizing the lanthanide(III) ions in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibited an emission in the red and green regions, respectively. Experimental results and theoretical calculations using the Sparkle/RM1 method support a quantum efficiency of ∼72% for 1, suggesting its potential as a candidate for light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs).

The synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of an oxamate-containing erbium(III) complex, namely, tetrabutylammonium aqua[N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)oxamato]erbium(III)-dimethyl sulfoxide-water (1/3/1.5), (C 16 H 36 N)[Er(C 11 H 12 NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O)]·3C 2 H 6 OS·1.5H 2 O or n-Bu 4 N[Er(Htmpa) 4 (H 2 O)]·3DMSO·1.5H 2 O (1), are reported. The crystal structure of 1 reveals the occurrence of an erbium(III) ion, which is surrounded by four N-phenyl-substituted oxamate ligands and one water molecule in a nine-coordinated environment, together with one tetrabutylammonium cation acting as a counter-ion, and one water and three dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) molecules of crystallization. Variable-temperature static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements were carried out for this mononuclear complex, revealing that it behaves as a field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) below 5.0 K.

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) were decorated onto Zn-MOF-74 crystals by photoreducing different metal precursors (Pt, Au, and Ag) using ultraviolet (UV) light in an aqueous solution with different metal concentrations without using additional stabilizers. X-ray diffraction revealed the three-dimensional structural integrity and crystallinity conservation of Zn-MOF-74 crystals during the UV decoration process. Raman spectroscopy showed a minor rearrangement in the structure of the Zn-MOF-74 crystal surface after NP decoration. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the metal oxidation states of Zn and NPs. The cocrystal hexamethylenetetramine-tridecanedioic acid (1/1) (HMT-C13), C 6 H 12 N 4 ·C 13 H 24 O 4 , was investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques at several temperatures during cooling and heating processes. Our results show the formation of two crystalline phases, separated by a large temperature phase co-existence between 290 and 340 K. Phase I, stable above 341 K, presents an orthorhombic structure described in the space group Bmmb, with one N 4 (CH 2 ) 6 ·C 13 H 22 O 4 adduct in its asymmetric unit. Phase II, stable below 290 K, presents a monoclinic symmetry described by the space group P2 1 /c, with two N 4 (CH 2 ) 6 ·C 13 H 22 O 4 adducts in its asymmetric unit. The phase co-existence is observed both upon cooling and heating, and seems to be related to a complex domain-growth dynamic within the crystal.

We report the unique heterobimetallic dodecanuclear oxamate-based {CoII6CuII6} nanowheel obtained using an environmentally friendly synthetic protocol. The effective Hamiltonian methodology employed herein allows the rationalisation of magnetic isotropic or anisotropic metal clusters, being a significant advance for future studies of exciting properties only observed at low and ultralow temperatures.

A simple and fast methodology under microwave irradiation for the synthesis of 2-aminopyrimidine and pyrazole derivatives using Atwal reaction is reported. After the optimization of the reaction conditions, eight 2-aminolpyrimidines containing ferrocene and heterocycles and three ferrocene pyrazoles were synthesized from the respective chalcones in good yields. Eight compounds had their structure determined by X-ray diffraction. The molecular hybrid 6a-h and 9a-c were tested on four cancer cell lines - HCT116, PC3, HL60 and SNB19 - where four pyrimidine 6a, 6f-h and one pyrazole 9c derivatives show promising antiproliferative activity. The mononuclear cobalt complex of 3,5-di- tert -butylcathecolate and cyan-pyridine (Co( diox ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ) is a very versatile compound that displays valence tautomerism (VT) in the solid state, which is induced by temperature, light, and hard X-rays, and modulated by solvent in the crystal lattice. In our work, we used single crystal X-ray diffraction as a probe for the light-induced VT in solid state and demonstrate the controlled use of hard X-rays via attenuation to avoid X-ray-induced VT interconversion. We report photoinduced VT in benzene solvated crystals of Co( diox ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 illuminated with blue 450 nm light at 30 K with a very high yield (80%) of metastable hs -Co II states, and we also show evidence of the de-excitation of these photoinduced metastable states using red 660 nm light. Such high-yield light-induced VT had never been experimentally observed in molecular crystals of cobalt tautomers, proving that the 450 nm light illumination is triggering a chain of events that leads to the ls -Co III to h s-Co II interconversion.

Bovine papillomavirus proteins were extensively studied as a prototype for the human papillomavirus. Here, the crystal structure of the extended E2 DNA-binding domain of the dominant transcription regulator from the bovine papillomavirus strain 1 is described in the space group P3 1 21. We found two protein functional dimers packed in the asymmetric unit. This new protein arrangement inside the crystal led to the reduction of the mobility of a previously unobserved loop directly involved in the protein-DNA interaction, which was then modeled for the first time., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Objective: The aim of this consensus statement on viscosupplementation is to serve as a reference document based on relevant literature and clinical experience in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis using an intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid, covering key aspects such as clinical indications, effectiveness, and tolerability., Methods: A multidisciplinary panel including two sports medicine physicians, six orthopedists, four physiatrists, and two rheumatologists were selected based on their clinical and academic experience of viscosupplementation. Sixteen statements were prepared and discussed, after which a vote was held. Each member of the panel gave a score between 0 and 10 on a Likert scale, specifying their level of agreement with the statement., Results: The panel reached a consensus on several issues. Specifically, the panel agreed that the best indication is for mild to moderate knee arthrosis; prior or concomitant use of intraarticular triamcinolone hexacetonide may optimize the effect of hyaluronic acid; viscosupplementation should not be performed as an isolated procedure but in conjunction with other rehabilitative and pharmacological measures; viscosupplementation has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and chondroprotective effects; and viscosupplementation is cost-effective., Conclusion: This consensus statement provides clear information and guidance for both individuals and payers. Complexes [Ag(H2BzPh)NO 3 ] ( 1 ), [Ag(H2Bz p CH 3 Ph)NO 3 ] ( 2 ), [Ag(H2Bz p ClPh)NO 3 ] ( 3 ), and [Ag(H2Bz p NO 2 Ph)NO 3 ] ( 4 ) were synthesized with 2-benzoylpyridine benzoylhydrazone (H2BzPh) and its para -methyl-benzoylhydrazone (H2Bz p CH 3 Ph), para -chloro-benzoylhydrazone (H2Bz p ClPh), and para -nitro-benzoylhydrazone (H2Bz p NO 2 Ph) derivatives. Experimental data indicate that the nitrate ligand binds more strongly to the silver center through one of the oxygen atoms, whereas the second oxygen atom from nitrate and the hydrazone oxygen makes much weaker interactions with the metal. Dissociation of nitrate most probably occurs in solution and in biological media. Interestingly, theoretical calculations suggested that when dissociation of the nitrate takes place, all bond orders involving the metal and the atoms from the hydrazone ligand increase significantly, showing that the bonding of nitrate results in the weakening of all other interactions in the metal coordination sphere. Upon complexation of the hydrazones to silver(I), cytotoxicity against B16F10 metastatic murine melanoma cells increased in all cases. Complexes ( 1-3 ) proved to be more cytotoxic than cisplatin. All compounds were more cytotoxic to B16F10 cells than to nontumorigenic murine Melan-A melanocyte cells. Interestingly, the selectivity index (SI = IC 50 non-malignant cells /IC 50 tumor cells ) of complex ( 1 ), SI = 23, was much higher than that of the parent hydrazone ligand, SI = 9.5. Studies on the interactions of complexes ( 1-3 ) with DNA suggested that although ( 1-3 ) interact with calf thymus DNA by an intercalative mode, direct covalent binding of silver(I) to DNA probably does not occur. Valence tautomeric interconversion (VTI) is a reversible process occurring in metal complexes in which an intramolecular metal-ligand electron transfer is accompanied by a change of metal ion spin state, creating two switchable electronic states (redox isomers). Herein, we describe the low-temperature, 30-100 K, single-crystal study of the [Co(diox) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ]·benzene complex (1) (diox = 3,5-di-t-butylsemiquinonate (SQ •- ) and/or 3,5-di-t-butylcatecholate (Cat 2- ) radical; 4-CN-py = 4-cyano-pyridine) using hard synchrotron X-ray radiation with different intensities. We demonstrate for the first time that hard X-rays can induce VTI, and that the interconversion molar fraction is dependent on both intensity and exposure time. This in turn shows that X-rays, as a probe, might be altering the very nature of many structures under investigation at low temperatures, and consequently their properties. Our findings add new perspectives to VTI studies and might be of significant interest to the entire community investigating photoresponsive complexes.

Three novel cobalt(iii)-triazole complexes with structural and redox properties suitable for hypoxia-activated drug delivery were obtained. A major influence of the ancillary ligands (TPA, py2en, py2enMe2) on the electronic properties and reactivity of their complexes was observed. An [O2]-dependent reduction to cobalt(ii) by ascorbic acid provided evidence of hypoxic selectivity.

Unlabelled: The inner integument of Jatropha curcas seeds is a non-photosynthetic tissue that acts primarily as a conduit for the delivery of nutrients to the embryo and endosperm. In this study we performed a histological and transmission electron microscopy analysis of the inner integument in stages prior to fertilization to 25days after pollination, to establish the structural changes associated with the plastid to gerontoplast transition. This study showed that plastids are subjected to progressive changes, which include the dismantling of the internal membrane system, matrix degradation and the formation of stromule-derived vesicles. A proteome analysis of gerontoplasts isolated from the inner integument at 25days after pollination, resulted in the identification of 1923 proteins, which were involved in a myriad of metabolic functions, such as synthesis of amino acids and fatty acids. Among the identified proteins, were also a number of hydrolases (peptidases, lipases and carbohydrases), which presumably are involved in the ordered dismantling of this organelle to provide additional sources of nutrients for the growing embryo and endosperm. The dataset we provide here may provide a foundation for the study of the proteome changes associated with the plastid to gerontoplast transition in non-photosynthetic tissues., Significance: We describe ultrastructural features of gerontoplasts isolated from the inner integument of developing seeds of Jatropha curcas, together with a deep proteome analysis of these gerontoplasts. A novel series of copper(II) coordination polymers [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(pyz)]n (1), [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(dps)]n (2), {[Cu(O2CC8H9)2(dps)(H2O)]·H2O}n (3), {[NaCu(O2CC8H9)2(bpm)(NO3)]·H2O}n (4), and [Cu4(O2CC8H9)6(OH)2(bpp)2]n (5) [O2CC8H9− = 3-phenylpropionate anion, pyz = pyrazine, dps = di(4-pyridyl)sulfide, bpm = 2,2′-bipyrimidine, and bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane] have been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. Compounds 1 and 2 belong to a large group of copper(II) carboxylates where bis-monodentate pyz (1) and dps (2) ligands connect the paddle-wheel [CuII2(μ-O2CC8H9)4] units leading to alternating copper(II) chains. The structure of 3 consists of uniform chains of trans-[CuII(O2CC8H9)2] units linked by the bis-monodentate dps ligand. Compound 4 consists of heterobimetallic chains where [NaI2CuII2(μ-O2CC8H9)4(NO3)2] units are doubly bridged by bis-bidentate bpm ligands. Compound 5 is also a chain compound whose structure is made up by tetranuclear [CuII4(μ3-OH)2(μ-O2CC8H9)4(O2CC8H9)2] units which are doubly bridged by bis-monodentate bpp ligands. The magnetic properties were investigated in the temperature range 1.8–300 K. Strong antiferromagnetic interactions across the quadruple syn–syn carboxylate are observed in 1 and 2 [J = −378 (1) and −348 cm−1 (2)] whereas a weak ferromagnetic coupling through the double out-of-plane oxo(carboxylate) bridge occurs in 4 [J = +2.66 cm−1], the spin Hamiltonian being defined as H = −JS1·S2 with S1 = S2 = SCu = 1/2. A quasi Curie law is observed for 3 (θ = −0.36 cm−1), the bis-monodentate dps ligand being a very poor mediator of magnetic interactions. The analysis of the magnetic properties of 5 is quite complex because of the presence of two crystallographically independent tetracopper(II) units with single-μ-hydroxo, di-μ-hydroxo, μ3-hydroxo and single-μ-hydroxo plus double syn,syn carboxylate bridges in each one. The nature and values of the magnetic couplings for 5 obtained by fitting (intermediate, strong and weak antiferromagnetic interactions for the three former exchange pathways respectively, and intermediate ferromagnetic interactions for the latter one) were substantiated by DFT type calculations.

A relatively large antiferromagnetic interaction between the two chromium(III) ions from the molecular square [{Cr(dmso)4}2{Nb(μ-O)2(C2O4)2}2] () (J = -12.0 cm(-1)) is mediated by the diamagnetic oxo-Nb(V)-oxo pathway, its nature and magnitude being substantiated by DFT type theoretical calculations.

The synthesis, crystal structure and preliminary magnetic characterization of a new heterobimetallic [Mn₅(II)Cu₅(II)] wheel containing a flexible bis-oxamate type ligand are described. This decanuclear compound exhibits a relatively strong intra-wheel antiferromagnetic interaction leading to a ground spin state S = 10.

Introduction: Oral anticoagulants are widely prescribed drugs. Interruption of anticoagulant therapy prior to oral surgery has been an issue of great controversy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of bleeding complications after dental extractions in patients on anticoagulant therapy (warfarin) in whom different local hemostatic methods were used., Material and Methods: Patients using warfarin and requiring extractions of at least two teeth were screened to participate in this prospective, randomized study. Extraction sites were considered as sampling units (statistically representative sample size) and were allocated to one of the three study groups (G1-4.8% tranexamic acid; G2-fibrin sponge; and G3-no local hemostatic agents)., Results: Eighty-four extraction sites were obtained from patients with mitral valve prolapse (47.4%), prosthetic cardiac valve (23.7%), venous thromboembolism (21.1%), and pulmonary embolism (5.2%). International normalized ratio (INR) values ranged between 2.1 and 3.1 (mean 2.51 ± 0.1). Postoperative bleeding was observed in four surgical sites (p < 0.001) and was mainly in older patients (p = 0.005)., Discussion: The three local hemostatic protocols were similarly effective in controlling postoperative bleeding in patients undergoing anticoagulant therapy with warfarin. The majority of teeth could be extracted with minimal problems in patients with cardiovascular diseases receiving treatment with anticoagulant therapy.

An overview is given of the recent advances in the field of modulated molecular and inorganic crystals with an emphasis on the links between incommensurability, intermolecular and interatomic interactions and, wherever possible, the properties of the materials. The importance of detailed knowledge on the modulated structure for understanding the crystal chemistry and the functional properties of modulated phases is shown using selected examples of incommensurate modulations in organic molecular compounds and inorganic complex oxides.

A unique bistable copper-metallacyclic complex is used as an elegant molecular switch for the reversible formation of emulsions by simple pH variation. This switch may have several exciting applications in biphasic processes such as catalysis and separation science technologies.

In this study, we performed a proteomic analysis of plastids isolated from the endosperm of developing Jatropha curcas seeds that were in the initial stage of deposition of protein and lipid reserves. Proteins extracted from the plastids were digested with trypsin, and the peptides were applied to an EASY-nano LC system coupled inline to an ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap Velos mass spectrometer, and this led to the identification of 1103 proteins representing 804 protein groups, of which 923 proteins were considered as true identifications, and this considerably expands the repertoire of J. curcas proteins identified so far. Of the identified proteins, only five are encoded in the plastid genome, and none of them are involved in photosynthesis, evidentiating the nonphotosynthetic nature of the isolated plastids. Homologues for 824 out of 923 identified proteins were present in PPDB, SUBA, or PlProt databases while homologues for 13 proteins were not found in any of the three plastid proteins databases but were marked as plastidial by at least one of the three prediction programs used. Functional classification showed that proteins belonging to amino acids metabolism comprise the main functional class, followed by carbohydrate, energy, and lipid metabolisms. The small and large subunits of Rubisco were identified, and their presence in the plastids is considered to be an adaptive feature counterbalancing for the loss of one-third of the carbon as CO2 as a result of the conversion of carbohydrate to oil through glycolysis. While several enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of several precursors of diterpenoids were identified, we were unable to identify any terpene synthase/cyclase, which suggests that the plastids isolated from the endosperm of developing seeds do not synthesize phorbol esters. In conclusion, our study provides insights into the major biosynthetic pathways and certain unique features of the plastids from the endosperm of developing seeds at the whole proteome level.

Introduction: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a well-defined benign neoplasm characterized by slow growth and predilection for the posterior mandible site, usually treated by conservative surgical approaches. In this context, Le Fort I Approach (LFIA) has been increasingly used providing good visualization and an easy access to the lesion. It also allows removal of the lesion quickly. Although there are case reports using LFIA for the management of benign neoplasms, odontogenic cysts and tumors of the middle third of face, to our knowledge, only one article describes the use of surgical LFIA for OF of the maxilla. Thus, the objective of this study was to report the second paper on the use of horizontal osteotomy of the maxilla in the resection of an extensive OF and conduct a brief literature review on this surgical approach., Case Report: The following case report describes a 33-year-old man who was diagnosed with OF. Oral examination showed a painless swelling of hard consistency, covered by normal mucosa in edentulous alveolar ridge of the maxillary posterior region of the right side. Tomographic slices revealed that the image with mixed density had a centrifugal growth, with expansion of the buccal and lingual cortical with an upper displacement of the maxillary sinus. The patient was admitted to the hospital for surgical resection of the lesion via LFIA. Satisfactory functional results were obtained after 18-month follow-up period. In addition, no recurrence or clinical complaints were noted., Discussion: LFIA shall be considered as a feasible option when planning surgery for removal of extensive benign lesions located in midfacial region because it is a predictable technique and routinely performed by the oral and maxillo-facial surgeons.

Two series of flexible dicyanomethylene compounds, specifically, class 1 and class 2 compounds, have been designed and synthesised. In class 1 compounds, the dicyanomethylene groups are separated by glycol chain spacers of different lengths, whereas, in class 2 compounds, the spacers are alkyl linkers of different lengths. The notion underlying the design of these compounds is that in class 1 molecules, the spacers contain donor oxygen atoms that could not only form hydrogen bonds during the course of crystal packing but also promote withdrawing effects that modify the photophysical and electrochemical properties of these molecules in solution; in contrast, these effects would be absent for class 2 molecules. However, this study revealed that, with respect to crystal packing, the size of the spacers and their even and odd numbers of atoms are more important than their chemical nature. All of the synthesised compounds exhibited blue emission in the solid state and in CH2Cl2 solutions. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these compounds in solution were not significantly affected by the type and length of the spacer that was used in each molecule. In the solid state, however, the compound with the shortest spacer showed the highest Stokes shift. The electronic transitions for the synthesized compounds in solution were explained by density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations, which indicated that the methylene moieties control the properties of both classes of compounds and that the spacers do not conjugate with the end groups. These two series of flexible dicyanomethylene compounds could be utilised as molecular building blocks for the development of new solids with novel properties.

A new compound of formula (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox] (1) [Bu4N(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, H4opba = 1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and H2ox = oxalic acid] has been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. The reaction of manganese(II) acetate, [Cu(opba)](2-), and ox(2-) in dimethyl sulfoxide yielded single crystals of 1. The structure of 1 consists of heterobimetallic oxamato-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) chains which are connected through bis-bidentate oxalate coordinated to the manganese(II) ions to afford anionic heterobimetallic layers of 6(3)-hcb net topology. The layers are interleaved by n-Bu4N(+) counterions. Each copper(II) ion in 1 is four-coordinate in a square planar environment defined by two amidate-nitrogen and two carboxylate-oxygen atoms from the two oxamate groups of the obpa ligand. The manganese(II) ion is six-coordinate in a somewhat distorted octahedral surrounding that is built by two oxalate-oxygen and four carbonyl-oxygen atoms from two [Cu(opba)](2-) units. The magnetic properties of 1 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K correspond to those expected for the coexistence of intralayer antiferromagnetic interactions of the type copper(II)-manganese(II) across oxamato and manganese(II)-manganese(II) through oxalato bridges plus a weak spin canting in the very low temperature domain. Simulation of the magnetic data through quantum Monte Carlo methodology reveals the magnitude of the intralayer magnetic interactions [J(CuMn) = -32.5(3) cm(-1), and J(MnMn) = -2.7(3) cm(-1)], their values being within the range of those previously observed in lower nuclearity systems.

We herein present the synthesis and X-ray structures of five copper(II) complexes of formulae [Cu(bpca)(CF3SO3)(H2O)]·H2O (1), [Cu(bpca)(Phpr)(H2O)]·3/2H2O (2), {[Cu(bpca)]2[Cu(opba)(H2O)]}·H2O (3), {[Cu(bpca)]2(H2opba)}2·6H2O (4) and [Cu(bpca)(EtH2opba)]n (5), where bpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amidate, Phpr = 3-phenylpropionate, CF3SO3(−) = triflate (anion of the trifluoromethanesulphonic acid), H4opba = N,N′-1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and EtH3opba = monoethyl ester derivative of the H4opba. 1 and 2 are mononuclear copper(II) complexes where the copper atom is five-coordinate in distorted square pyramidal surroundings with a tridentate bpca and a water molecule (1)/carboxylate oxygen (2) building the basal plane and a triflate oxygen (1)/water molecule (2) filling the apical position. 3 is a neutral tricopper(II) complex where the [Cu(opba)(H2O)]2− unit acts as a bis-bidentate ligand toward two peripheral [Cu(bpca)]+ fragments. The three crystallographically independent copper(II) ions in 3 are five-coordinate with two nitrogen and two oxygen atoms (inner copper atom)/three bpca-nitrogen and an oxamate oxygen (outer copper atom) building the basal plane plus a water molecule (inner copper)/an oxamate oxygen (outer copper) in the apical position (inner copper atom) of somewhat distorted square pyramidal surroundings. 4 is a centrosymmetric tetracopper(II) compound where four [Cu(bpca)]+ fragments are assembled by two H2opba2− groups adopting an unusual bidentate/bis-monodentate bridging mode. The two crystallographically independent copper(II) ions in 4 are also five-coordinate having the three bpca-nitrogens in basal positions, the other two sites of the distorted square pyramid being filled by two oxygens of either a bidentate oxamate (at one copper centre) or two bis-monodentate oxamates (at the other copper atom). 5 is a zigzag chain of [Cu(bpca)(H2O)]+ units which are connected through the EtH2opba− ligand adopting a bidentate/monodentate bridging mode across the monodeprotonated oxamate group. Each copper(II) ion in 5 is six-coordinate in an elongated octahedral CuN3O3 chromophore. The magnetic properties of 3–5 were investigated in the temperature range 1.9–300 K. 3 exhibits an intermediate intramolecular antiferromagnetic interaction [J = -65.8(2) cm(-1) with the Hamiltonian H = -J(S(Cu1)·S(Cu2) + S(Cu2)·S(Cu3))] which leads to a low-lying spin doublet at low temperatures. A weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the inner copper(II) ions occurs in 4 [J = -2.36(2) cm(-1), H = -JS1·S2)] and a very small intrachain antiferromagnetic interaction is observed in 5 [J = -0.17(1) cm(-1) with H = -J∑(i)S(i)·S(i+1)]. These values are analyzed by means of simple orbital symmetry considerations and compared with those previously reported for parent systems.

Bi-stable molecular systems presenting valence tautomerism are associated with the development of new functional materials, which can be used for applications in organic electric conductors, optoelectronic and molecular magnetic devices. The properties of these materials can be adjusted with slight chemical changes and can be induced by external stimuli. Typical examples of valence tautomer compounds are coordination complexes of Co and o-dioxolene ligands, notably quinone like ones. In the search for a new class of cobalt complexes presenting valence tautomerism we report herein the synthesis and characterization of five new coordination compounds of cobalt and 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (lawsone or shortly Law). Complexes [Co(Law)2(im)2]·C6H5CH3 (1), [Co(Law)2(py)2]·CH3OH (2), [Co(Law)2(phen)]·(C4H8O)2 (3), [Co(Law)2(2,2-bpy)]·C6H5CH3 (4) and [Co(Law)2(2,2-bpy)] (5) were synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction and EPR techniques in a wide range of temperatures and under illumination. Despite presenting similar molecular and geometry packing of the valence tautomer complexes of cobalt and o-dioxolenes, neither structural nor electronic evidence of valence tautomerism could be found in the Co and lawsone complexes.

For the new organic salt 1H-imidazol-3-ium 1,4-dioxo-1,4-dihydronaphthalen-2-olate, C3H5N2(+)·C10H5O3(-), ab initio calculations of the gas-phase structures of the lawsonate and imidazolium ions were performed to help in the interpretation of the structural features observed. Three different types of hydrogen bond are responsible for the three-dimensional packing of the salt.

Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of fear of needles and the impact of a multidisciplinary educational program in women with pre-gestational and gestational diabetes taking insulin during pregnancy., Methods: The short Diabetes Fear of Injecting and Self-testing Questionnaire (D-FISQ), composed by two subscales that access fear of self injection (FSI) and fear of self testing (FST), was administered twice during pregnancy to 65 pregnant women with pre-gestational and gestational diabetes: at the first endocrine consult and within the last two weeks of pregnancy or postpartum. An organized multidisciplinary program provided diabetes education during pregnancy. Statistical analysis was carried out by Wilcoxon and McNemar tests and Spearman correlation. A p<0.05 was considered to be significant., Results: Data from the short D-FISQ questionnaire shows that 43.1% of pregnant women were afraid of needles in the first evaluation. There was a significant reduction in scores for FSI and FST subscales between the first and second assessments (first FSI 38.5% compared with second 12.7%, p=0.001; first FST 27.7% compared with second FST 14.3%, p=0.012)., Conclusions: The fear of needles is common in pregnant women on insulin therapy and an organized multidisciplinary educational diabetes program applied during pregnancy reduces scores of such fear.

Dimerization of lawsone occurs upon reaction with Co(BF(4))(2)·6H(2)O and N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine (py(2)en) to produce the mononuclear complex [Co(III)(bhnq)(py(2)en)]BF(4)·H(2)O (1). This complex has been investigated as a prototype of a bioreductive prodrug, where the bhnq(2-) ligand acts as a model for cytotoxic naphthoquinones. Cyclic voltammetry data in aqueous solution have shown a quasi-reversible Co(III)/Co(II) process at E(1/2) = -0.26 V vs Fc/Fc(+). Reactivity studies revealed the dissociation of bhnq(2-) from the complex upon reduction of 1 with ascorbic acid, and a dependence of the reaction rate on the oxygen concentration suggests the occurrence of redox cycling.

The reaction of 2,2-dimethoxy-N-methylethyllamine or 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane with CS(2) in alkaline media produced two novel dithiocarbamate salts. Subsequent reactions with organotin halides yielded six new complexes: [SnMe(2){S(2)CNR(R(1))(2)}(2)] (1), [Sn(n-Bu)(2){S(2)CNR(R(1))(2)}(2)] (2), [SnPh(2){S(2)CNR(R(1))(2)}(2)] (3), [SnMe(2){S(2)CNR(R(2))(2)}(2)] (4), [Sn(n-Bu)(2){S(2)CNR(R(2))(2)}(2)] (5), [SnPh(2){S(2)CNR(R(2))(2)}(2)] (6), where R = methyl, R(1) = CH(2)CH(OMe)(2), and R(2) = 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane. All compounds were identified in terms of infrared, (1)H and (13)C NMR, and the complexes were also characterized using (119)Sn NMR, (119)Sn Mössbauer and X-ray crystallography. The biological activity of all derivatives has been screened in terms of IC(90) and IC(50) against Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus parasiticus, Penicillium citrinum, Curvularia senegalensis, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Streptococcus sanguinis, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the results correlated well with a performed study of structure-activity relationship (SAR). Zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes of a tridentate Mannich base L1 derived from 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, pyridinecarboxyaldehyde and 2-aminomethylpyridine, [ZnL1Cl(2)]·H(2)O 1 and [CuL1Cl(2)]·2H(2)O 2, have been synthesized and fully characterized. The structure of complex 1 has been elucidated by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study: the zinc atom is pentacoordinate and the coordination geometry is a distorted square base pyramid, with a geometric structural parameter τ equal to 0.149. Vibrational spectroscopy and ab initio DFT calculations of both compounds have confirmed that the two complexes exhibit similar structures. Purpose: To study the main effects of local use of liquid nitrogen on bone marrow tissue in rats., Methods: The femoral diaphyses of 42 Wistar rats were exposed to three local and sequential applications of liquid nitrogen for one or two minutes, intercalated with periods of five minutes of passive thawing. The animals were sacrificed after one, two, four and 12 weeks and the specimens obtained were analyzed histomorphologically., Results: In the second experimental week of one-minute protocol, histological degree of inflammation obtained a mean score of one (mild), ranging from 0 (absent or scarce) and two (moderate) (Kruskal-Wallis test p=0.01). In the second experimental week of two-minute protocol, degree of inflammation to the medullar tissue obtained an average score of two (Kruskal-Wallis test p=0.01)., Conclusion: The degree of inflammation of the bone marrow tissue was higher in protocol of three applications of two minutes compared to protocol of three applications of one minute.

Continuing our interest in tridentate ligands to develop new prototypes of cobalt-based metallodrugs for combating cancer, modifications in the backbone of HL1, [(2-hydroxybenzyl)(2-(pyridil-2-yl)ethyl]amine) were proposed in order to modulate the redox potential of new Co(III) complexes. Three ligands with electron withdrawing groups were synthesized: HL2: [(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl)(2-(pyridil-2-yl)ethyl]amine); HL3: [(2-hydroxybenzyl)(2-(pyridil-2-yl)ethyl]imine) and HL4: [(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl)(2-(pyridil-2-yl)ethyl]imine). They were used to obtain the respective mononuclear complexes 2, 3 and 4, which are discussed compared to the previous reported complex 1 (obtained from HL1). The new complexes were characterized and studied by several techniques including X-ray crystallography, elemental and conductimetric analysis, IR, UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies, and electrochemistry. The substitutions of the group in the para position of the phenol (HL1 and HL2) and the imine instead of the amine (HL3 and HL4), promote anodic shifts in the complexes reduction potentials. The influence of these substitutions in the biological activities of the Co(III) complexes against the murine melanoma cell line (B16F10) was also evaluated. Little effect was observed on cellular viability decrease for all free ligands, however the coordination to Co(III) enhances their activities in the following range: 1>4≈2>3. The first examples of platinum(II) complexes of 3-(aminomethyl)naphthoquinone Mannich bases have been synthesised and their crystal structures are described. Neutral and charged complexes have been obtained, fully characterised and their cytotoxic activities have also been investigated. 3-[(R(1)-amino)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones (R(1) = n-Bu, HL1; Bn, HL2; furfuryl, HL3; n-heptyl, HL4 and n-decyl, HL5) coordinate to platinum(II) through the two nitrogen atoms. The neutral complexes cis-[Pt(HL)Cl(2)] 1a-5a are analogous to cisplatin with the bidentate ligand HL and two chlorine atoms occupying cis positions. In the charged complexes cis-[Pt(L(-))(NH(3))(2)]NO(3)1b-5b the deprotonated form of the ligand L(-) also coordinates via the nitrogen atoms, and the other two positions around the platinum(II) ion are completed with NH(3) ligands. The cytotoxic activities of all compounds have been tested for six different cancer cell lines: MDA-MB-435 (melanoma), HL-60 (promyelocytic leukaemia), HCT-8 (colon), SF-295 (brain), OVCAR-8 (ovary) and PC-3 (prostate). Proligands HL4 and HL5 have exhibited high activity against HL-60 (IC(50) = 1.9 and 3.8 μmol L(-1), respectively), HCT-8 (IC(50) = 1.6 and 1.7 μmol L(-1), respectively) and SF-295 (IC(50) = 1.1 and 1.7 μmol L(-1), respectively). The chlorido complexes 1a-5a have shown high to moderate cytotoxic activities, complex 4a (R(1) = n-heptyl) being more active than proligand HL4 against melanoma (IC(50) = 6.4 and > 40 μmol L(-1), respectively) and more active than cisplatin against all tested cell lines. Among the amine charged complexes only 4b and 5b have exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines, although they were only moderately active against the PC-3 cell line (IC(50) = 29.9 and 15.6 μmol L(-1), respectively). In general the compounds with the longest carbon chains (R(1) = n-heptyl and n-decyl) have exhibited the highest activities.

Angle-resolved synchrotron radiation diffraction was used to investigate lithium potassium sulfate (LiKSO(4)) crystals under high pressure. We confirm that the title compound undergoes three phase transitions, α →β, β → γ and γ →δ, observed at around 0.8 GPa, 4.0 GPa and 7.0 GPa, respectively. Two competitive structures are proposed for the β-phase after powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements: an orthorhombic (space group Cmc 2(1)) or a monoclinic (space group Cc) structure. These structures correspond to the models of the low temperature phases. The γ-phase is indexed by a monoclinic structure. Finally, the δ-phase is found to be highly disordered. No evidence of any pressure-induced amorphous phase was observed up to 24 GPa, even under imposed highly non-hydrostatic conditions, contrary to previous propositions.

Aiming to investigate the use of tridentate ligands to develop new bireductively activated prodrugs, two N(2)O-donor ligands (HL1: [(2-hydroxybenzyl)(2-(imidazol-2-yl)ethyl)]amine; and HL2: [(2-hydroxybenzyl)(2-(pyridil-2-yl)ethyl]amine) were used to synthesize new Co(III) complexes, 1 and 2. Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, IR, UV-visible and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. Electrochemical data in methanol revealed that the Co(III)-->Co(II) reduction of 1 (-0.84V vs. normal hydrogen electrode - NHE) is more positive than 2 (-1.13V vs. NHE), while it was expected to be more negative due to better sigma-donor ability of imidazole ring in HL1, compared to pyridine in HL2. Considering that reduction processes on Co(III) center may involve the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), it might play an important role on the electronic properties of the complexes, and could explain the observed redox potentials. Then, geometry optimizations of 1 and 2 were performed using the density functional theory (DFT), and different group participation in their LUMO is demonstrated. Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells as eukaryotic model, it is shown that in situ generated reduced species, 1(red) and 2(red), have high capacity to inhibit cellular growth, with IC50 (0.50mM for both complexes) lower than cisplatin IC50 (0.6mM) at the same time of exposure. Regarding to their ability to promote S. cerevisiae cells death, after 24 h, cells became susceptible only when exposed to 1(red) and 2(red): (i) at concentrations higher than 0.5mM in a non-dose dependence, and (ii) in anaerobic metabolism. These data reveal the potential of 1 and 2 as bioreductively activated prodrugs, since their oxidized forms do not present expressive activities when compared to their reduced forms.

A process enabling both the controlled growth and positioning of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is reported. Using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques, metal NPs are directly grown in the region of interest via the reduction of metallic ions in a polymer matrix induced by a properly biased SPM tip. The metallic nature of these NPs is established via X-ray diffraction and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy experiments. Some initial applications of this process, such as the decoration of carbon nanotubes with metal NPs, are also briefly demonstrated and discussed.

The thermotropic phase diagram of 1:1 co-crystals of hexamethylenetetramine and pimelic acid (heptanedioic acid) is investigated. Three crystalline phases are identified at ambient pressure. Phase I is disordered, as revealed by diffuse rods in its diffraction pattern. When the temperature is lowered the diffuse streaks disappear in Phase II, but superstructure reflections emerge indicating an ordering process of the structure through a non-ferroic, or at least non-ferroelastic, phase transition. Phase II is mainly characterized by an unusual distribution of its reflection intensities. Phase III is reached through a ferroelastic phase transition that induces twinned domains. A model based on the stacking of an elementary layer is proposed with the aim of describing the structures in a unified framework. Depending on the value of the unique stacking parameter eta, each of the different structures observed can be reproduced by this model. Its validity is then tested by a series of simulations reproducing the main features of the diffraction patterns such as the diffuse scattering streaks, the occurrence of superstructure peaks at lower temperature and twinning.

HMT-C11 belongs to the family of adducts formed by the co-crystallization of N(4)(CH(2))(6) molecules (hexamethylenetetramine or HMT) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids HOOC(CH(2))(n - 2)COOH with 5

The structure of the Ts1 toxin from the Brazilian scorpion Tityus serrulatus was investigated at atomic resolution using X-ray crystallography. Several positively charged niches exist on the Ts1 molecular surface, two of which were found to coordinate phosphate ions present in the crystallization solution. One phosphate ion is bound to the conserved basic Lys1 residue at the Ts1 N-terminus and to residue Asn49. The second ion was found to be caged by residues Lys12, Trp54 and Arg56. Lys12 and Tyr/Trp54 residues are strictly conserved in all classical scorpion beta-neurotoxins. The cavity formed by these residues may represent a special scaffold required for interaction between beta-neurotoxins and sodium channels. The charge distribution on the Ts1 surface and the results of earlier chemical modification studies and side-directed mutagenesis experiments strongly indicate that the phosphate-ion positions mark plausible binding sites to the Na(+) channel. The existence of two distinct binding sites on the Ts1 molecular surface provides an explanation for the competition between Ts1, depressant (LqhIT2) and excitatory (AaHIT) neurotoxins.

The structural phases observed in LiKSO4 crystals due to thermotropic transitions have been studied for more than a century. Nowadays many different phases are referenced, but some of the results are still controversial. Structural studies by single-crystal X-ray diffraction from room temperature to 803 K are presented here. Phase II (708 < T < 943 K) is extensively discussed on the basis of ordered and disordered models, using harmonic and anharmonic atomic displacements, and considering a twinned crystal composed of three orthorhombic domains. Analyses of the same phase at different temperatures determine the best structure model.
