The former German Bohemian minority that lived in the city of Pilsen (in Czech: Plzeň) and the West Bohemian district of Mies (Stříbro) until the forced resettlement in 1945/46, remains an almost blank spot in the context of research on Germans in the Bohemian lands. In this article, contributions from the journal „Mies-Pilsner Heimatbrief“ from 1950 are analysed and considered for the first time as a source type for the topic mentioned. The following questions were investigated: Which language varieties did the German residents of the city of Pilsen and the rural Mieser area use? Which language attitudes towards dialect and standard language did they represent? And what was the significance of dialect for their identity? These questions are dealt with by way of example using a dialect debate in the aforementioned monthly. In the second year of the magazine, a letter to the editor called for the publication of dialect stories to be stopped. In the following three editions, five other readers speak up, who vehemently contradict this demand and explain why dialect texts and dialect as such are valuable in their opinion. A native Pilsener even partially phrased his letter to the editor in his native dialect. In a brief analysis, this text turns out to be in northern Bavarian dialect, or in Egerland dialect, as he calls it. In addition to these structural linguistic investigations, the arguments used in letters to the editor to reject or approve dialect (texts) are considered from a sociolinguistic point of view. In this way we also learn something about the identity of the West Bohemian expellees. On the one hand, the arguments are of a general nature, such as that the dialect represents the “actual mother tongue”. On the other hand, the specific situation after the expulsion is discussed, in which the dialect represents „a piece of home“ in the foreign country for the Sudeten Germans. This intangible cultural heritage of the homeland should therefore continue to be cultivated and passed on to the next generation. At the end of the last letter to the editor, the editor of the magazine finally announced that texts in the dialect of Western Bohemia should continue to be printed in the future.

GENTRIFICATION , *RACE , *BUILT environment , *NEIGHBORHOODS , *INSTITUTIONAL racism , *CENSUS - Abstract
We interrogate the interrelations of race and gentrification in three Chicago neighborhoods of historical significance to Black, Mexican, and Puerto Rican residents. Our previous work indicates that historical legacies of structural racism mean that gentrification works differently in each area, although the extant literature has not directly addressed how race fuels local valuation regimes. For each neighborhood we provide GIS mapping of 30 years of property parcel data and Census block data on race, compared with a parcel level visual scan of material conditions in the built environment. Changes in value at the block level reveal value assigned to whiteness irrespective of material improvement and run counter to standard explanations of gentrification but closely align with a model of racial capitalism. We bridge the gap between qualitative and quantitative research by mapping the everyday life of racial change that is felt and known by residents of color in Chicago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the early history of one of the largest historical cities of the Czech Republic – Pilsen. It is shown that the city went through two stages in its development: initially it was one of the most important regional towns of the medieval Bohemian state, and in 1295, in the immediate vicinity of the old settlement, a royal city was founded, endowed with self-government rights and other privileges on the basis of city law, which became the center of economic life and a point of concentration of the population. By the end of the XIV century, it became the third largest city in the Czech Republic and inherited the name Pilsen, leaving the old settlement with the name Old Pilsenets.

[Display omitted] • Health related 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenol was found in exclusively in Rauchbier. • Belgians Ale's are very diversity, and some styles exhibited a lot unique compounds. • Farmhouse has neointermedeol, which exhibits antibacterial activity. • Higher 5-pentyloxolan-2-one and 2,4-ditert-butylphenol quantities in Catharina sour. • Berliner Weisse showed lower quantity of oct-1-en-3-ol. The world of beer is a rich tapestry woven with diverse styles, each with its unique character. Lager, known for its crispness, ferments at lower temperatures, while ale, at warmer ones, boasts a wide spectrum of aromas. Belgian beers dazzle with their complexity, from fruity Trappist ales to sour lambics. German wheat beers, like hefeweizens, charm with their effervescence and fruity undertones. India Pale Ales (IPAs) showcase a hoppy burst, while sour ales tantalize with their tanginess. Craftsmanship, history, and regional ingredients intertwine in this world of brewing, offering aficionados an array of delightful experiences. Research on craft beer aromas is limited, and molecular fingerprint could be crucial. To date, there have been no studies focused on characterizing compound profiles to differentiate beer styles. The Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) method provides a rapid and solvent-free approach to volatile compound. The present study aims to characterize the aroma profile of a wide range of beers by using HS-SPME/GC–MS technique combined with multivariate data processing. A total of 120 beer samples were collected and divided into five categories: Pilsen (n = 28); Lager (n = 23); Ale (n = 32); Sour (n = 24); and Belgian Ales (n = 13). Among the Pilsen beers, 18 unique compounds were found for beers with hop extract and hops, and 2 for beers with hop extract (Octyl acetate; and alpha-Terpineol). When comparing the remaining groups to each other, Belgian beers exhibited 5 unique compounds, and Lagers had one (nonanal). Sours and Ales did not have unique compounds but shared 2 distinct compounds with the Belgian group each. We concluded that Belgian beers are the most complex in terms of various aroma-related compounds, and that it is possible to distinguish beers that use pure hops from hop extract. This paper attempts to answer the questions of how present perception and conceptualizations of everyday life in the city recreate representations of the past and the image of a long demolished neighbourhood of a workers’ colony, and how this image is used as a “mnemonic device” when narrators seek to respond to the perceived socio-spatial problems. We deal with what we call “oppressed memory” of a neighbourhood that does not exist in its “memory form” anymore, but is, though, lived as a communal memory space and used as a memory device to respond to the perceived current social and spatial problems of the city of Pilsen and beyond.

Resident’s attitude ,European Capital of Culture ,Pilsen ,Business ,HF5001-6182 - Abstract
The article discusses the resident´s attitudes towards the Pilsen – European Capital of Culture 2015 project. The evaluation was made more than half a year after the end of the event. Based on the survey, whose respondents were residents of the city of Pilsen, three thematic issues were verified. They involved 1) respondents relation to culture and arts, and their possible changes due to the ECoC events in 2015, 2) the general benefits and impacts of these events and 3) the long-term legacy of the ECoC 2015 or at least of some events that the project started. Also the supply of cultural events in the city was assessed. Results clearly confirmed positive residents´ attitude towards the project. They also show benefits observed by respondents that were not seen only in the field of culture, but also in others. Most mentioned were: increased tourism, higher and better supply of culture and arts, and its greater public support. Also such benefits as changed image of the city as well as improved environment were often observed. On the other hand, most of the respondents did not believe in long term effects of the project and also their opinion was biased by their general attitude towards the culture. Overall the opinion of city residents confirms that originally identified positive view of the ECoC has not changed in time too much.

The article presents an investigation of the special vocabulary of German origin in Jan Hajšman's "Plzeňsko-český slovník" (2017) for lexical, phonetic and morphological features of diatopic varieties of German. Based on a variety-linguistic analysis and categorization conclusions are drawn about the German urban city dialect spoken in Pilsen until 1945 on which there have been no data available so far. At the same time, Hajšman's lexicographical documentation will be classified not only among other contemporary attempts to popularize the Pilsen colloquial language but also among similar tendencies of medial revival of (historical) city languages with German proportions that can be observed in Czech cities at former language borders (Brno, Ostrava) forming a linguistic memorial landscape.

Abstract The aim of this article is to investigate the factors that influence the size of activity spaces of homeless men and women in cities. Vulnerable population groups such as the homeless face the risk of mobility challenges that can exacerbate their social exclusion even more through mobility-driven spatial exclusion. The extent of an individual's activity space is a key precondition for the daily coping strategies and life opportunities of homeless people. This study is the first to combine GPS tracking of homeless people based on a week-long GPS measurement with mobility interviews. The article tests five hypotheses as to the influence of city size, age, gender, housing situation and education on the size of activity space. Data obtained for a large city (Prague) and for a small city (Pilsen) are analysed using three geospatial measurements of activity spaces. In line with mixed-method approaches, the results are further triangulated through mobility interviews. By mapping the objective activity spaces, we were able to evaluate the role of individual and contextual factors in shaping homeless life and discuss the theoretical and practical implications of activity space measurement for social policy and urban planning. Highlights • The size of activity space of homeless people increase with the size of a city • Homeless women are more mobile than homeless men in large cities • Young and old homeless are less mobile than middle aged homeless [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study is devoted to establishment and research orientation of so-called Pilsen Bulgarian studies. In the Czech academia, Bulgarian studies were traditionally understood as philological field of study (the same situation applies to Czech studies in Bulgaria). However, contemporary globalized world offers much more opportunities for academic interest in Bulgaria. Pilsen Bulgarian studies represent different new model of academic centre based on non-philological grounds. This now fully established group of pedagogues and students created, without being formally institutionalized in the structure of the university, research centre focused on Bulgarian issues which is characterized by wide spectrum of activities and important research results. More attention and support should be focused on research centres of this kind instead of focusing only on well-established, institutionalized and traditional ones.

The aim of case study of Pilsen is to assess what is the level of implementation of new ecohydrological management trends of cities in the Czech environment. There was used comparison with the development system of the concept „Water sensitive cities“ for the assessment of history, current status and future of ecohydrological management of the city of Pilsen. A more detailed discussion, what categories of ecohydrological tools are currently in Pilsen preferred, was made the analysis of the results of the expert´s assessment of the environment the city of Plzeň in the preparation of the strategic plan of the city. Analysis shows that the city administration provides water management to the level required to quality of life, is aware of the risks (e.g., an accident on the main source of water or flood risk) and trying to respond to the global challenge of adaptation to climate change. However, there is no simple structure, how to reconcile the splintered competative positions of municipal organizations with a share of the ecohydrological management of the city into a single concept.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: options and threats on a local level policy formulation, especially in a phase of its formulation through declared priorities created by stakeholders. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: unclear relation between stakeholders and their hierarchy in the case, and unknown options how to improve examination process between them; about method, content analysis is used in the defined case (case study). THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: starts with content analysis of all documents about public transportation in Pilsen, continues with stakeholder relation analysis and summarizing patterns of public policy creation which depict possible problems - options how to solve them followed. RESEARCH RESULTS: there is a mutual harmony of public transport documents in Pilsen, but it depends on one stakeholder without proper rule to make the final decision in policy formulation; research options could be focus on informal practises; there could be problem with a lack of information if the whole policy is depended on one stakeholder (analytically informant), who do not want to participate. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: to combine formal information in examined documents with adding informal perceptions of stakeholders (non-structured interviews are recommended); to distinguish stakeholders with direct decision making power from those, who "only" prepare strategies; to focus on agenda setting of those stakeholders that prepare strategies - they formulate problem, so they create policy informally. This article focuses on provincial gentrification on a case of Pilsen. The main goal is to assess whether the process of gentrification is taking place in the territory of the five inner-city neighbourhoods. The inner cities in Central and Eastern Europe were significantly neglected during the unfavourable period of socialism. Since 90’s, those urban localities have become a target of regeneration and social changes. To determine the potential signs of gentrification in Pilsen, an own field investigation was taken to evaluate the physical upgrading in the five inner-city neighbourhoods according to the relevant classification. Regarding to this step, maps were made showing individual types of houses and subsequently the hotspots of modernization and potential social exclusion. It was found that the proportion of types determining modernization in the four neighbourhoods is around 50 %. Only Roudná shows above-average values, where the share of modernization types is 72 %.

Craft beer is that produced by less industrialized methods, prioritizing quality over quantity. Its popularization in the Brazilian market grows exponentially based on the number of breweries registered in Brazil each year. The objective of this work was to perform sensory analyses of 4 styles of artisanal beers of local manufacture through acceptance tests by hedonic scale and purchase intention test. The beers studied were produced by the country brewery, being Pilsen, APA, IPA, and Stout. Sixty untrained volunteer tasters participated in the tests, all of them of age, half of them male and the other half female, all beer drinkers, who had good health conditions. To evaluate the similarity or difference on each parameter evaluated between beers, the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed on the means, considering a significance level of 5%. For the comparison of means, the Nemenyi test was performed, which connected the statistically similar means. Although most participants claim to know the difference between traditional beers and craft beers, and consume craft beer, most of them still show indifferent preference among these options. The most accepted beer for the studied public was Pilsen, the least accepted was Stout. This result is reflected in the purchase intent test. With Pilsen having the highest average, while Stout had the lowest.

The aim of this study was to determine the amount of malt and adjunct in Pilsen Brazilian commercial beer, and to detect likely adulteration in its composition, based on the Brazilian legislation. The methodology applied was the isotopic analysis which used carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. One hundred sixty-one beer samples from seventeen Brazilian states were analyzed. It was concluded that 95.6% used malt and adjunct (corn or sugarcane derived: 91.3% and rice derived: 4.3%) in their formula and 4.3% were "pure malt" beer. Among the analyzed samples 3.7% were beers with less than 50% of malt in their formula (adulterated), 28.6% of them were in doubtful level for any adjunct and 67.7% contained malt in the legal established limit.

- Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The following article aims to provide an interpretation of the annual public occasion called the "Liberation Festival" in Pilsen. The Liberation Festival serves as a celebration of the liberation of Pilsen by the U.S. army. Our paper presents a dramaturgical analysis of this occasion. More specifically, our effort is focused on two main interpretative threads. With respect to the first one (called "the production of discourse") we analyse the processes of the (re)production of political discourse related to this public occasion. We also identify the main discourse that is typically produced or reinforced during the Liberation Festival. The second interpretative thread is called "the organizational line of the Liberation Festival". Here, we try to provide examples and identify characteristics of the strategies and practices that can be employed by state apparatuses to present themselves as guarantors of the security of festival goers. Our findings confirm that public ceremonies (like the Liberation Festival) can fulfil the role of a medium that serves to spread actual political discourse, the veneration of actual societal normative order, and a positive portrait of state apparatuses. Our article can thus be viewed as a contribution to the debate on the reproduction of political discourse through public spectacles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the case of a Mexican migrants neighborhood in the city of Chicago (Pilsen) which is home to many artists. The aim is to show that there is a tension between, on the one hand, the cultural practices of local artists and, on the other hand, the cultural policies and urban renewal that aim to ensure a metropolitan territorial attractiveness. Through an ethnography of social and artistic actors mostly conducted in 2019, this piece proposes first to study the community practices of immigrant artists, especially in muralist art. Then the analysis focuses on the accelerated gentrification process in this district. It became very fashionable due to its post-industrial renovation, attracting new inhabitants and tourism of so-called ethnic neighbourhood. This dynamic gentrification simultaneously organizes the displacement of the most vulnerable Mexican populations and the commodification of migrant cultural heritage. Finally, this research shows that the social organization of urban space is not only a source of injustice but also of opportunities depending on the status, income and class interests of racialized groups in the city.

The diploma thesis Europeanisation of Municipalities in the Czech Republic deals with the effects of membership in the European Union on the administrative structures of selected municipalities. This is a comparative case study of municipalities of various sizes and significance, namely the capital city of Prague, the statutory city of Pilsen and the city with extended powers Pisek. The aim of the thesis is to clarify which institutions in these municipalities manage the European agenda. The thesis follows three dimensions of the concept of Europeanisation (top-down; bottom-up and horizontal), which allows us to observe this issue from different angles. Research questions follow the logic of these three dimensions and the last research question focuses on comparing the Europeanisation of selected municipalities and identifying differences based on their size. The main source of the information was interviews with officials and politicians responsible for the European agenda in selected municipalities. The results of the work confirm the theoretical assumption that the size of municipalities has a significant impact on the management of the EU agenda. Financial and administrative capacities, the setting of European funds for the given city and the opinions of local political elites play the role...

Václav Trojan (1907–1983) proslul zejména jako autor hudby k loutkovým filmům Jiřího Trnky. Celoživotní inspiraci mu přinášely české a moravské lidové písně, jejichž úpravám i náročným uměleckým stylizacím se věnoval zejména ve svých dvou folklorních obdobích (1937–1945, resp. 1966-1974). Václav Trojan (1907–1983) composed his Pilsen Songs for tenor and wind quintet in 1942 and 1958. The study recapitulates Trojan's relations to his native city Pilsen and characterizes composer's work with the Czech folklore material.

The document is dedicated to Koranda congregation in Pilsen. Its history starts at the very beginning of the 20th century. The document focuses especially on the last sixty years of the congregation’s activities, but it also contains a short description of the first fifty years of its history. The problem of evangelization of the western Bohemia and Pilsen itself is described in the document, as well as the historical development during the First Republic, World War II and the communist era. In the housing estates of the second half of the 20th century, public amenities were provided by means of hierarchically arranged public amenities centres. The aim of this work is to trace the development of public amenities centres in the last 30 years, and to try to explain what is the differentiation in offer between individual cpublic amenities centres. The theoretical part is based mainly on the concepts of construction of socialist housing estates, including the location and overview of the offer of civic amenities centers. There is also a chapter devoted directly to the city of Pilsen. The specific implementation of housing estates in Pilsen and the approach to their regeneration after 1989 are also mentioned. The case study was carried out in the regional city of Pilsen. Qualitative methods were used in the form of field research, analysis of photographs and analysis of data from the real estate cadastre. It has been proven that the differentiation in the offer of public amenities centres is caused by set of the characteristics. The most important factors were selected: time of the origin, the location of the housing estate within the city, the technical condition of the building and the subjectively perceived atmosphere. The theoretical part is based mainly on the concepts of construction...
