The market for photographic works of art is viewed by the art industry as restrained, with consumers in the high-end becoming more discerning about their purchases and the mid-range market receiving the healthy share of the market.

Thomas Walther views his collection of art photographs as resulting from a passionate desire to acquire beautiful objects. Walther tries to express his personality through his collection. The photographs in Walther's collection mostly date from the 1920s and many are European in origin. Walther prefers photographs that are not merely representational but contain an element of abstraction. He regards this abstract quality as the source of the photographs' emotional power.

Dorothy Norman has been collecting the photographs and prints of contemporary artists for many years. Norman has many examples of Alfred Stieglitz's work, with whom she was associated from 1927 until his death. Her close terms with Stieglitz and other artists helped her to obtain much of their work. Norman holds on to art that she finds moving and evocative of delicacy and beauty.

Stanley Burns's collection of over 125,000 photographs consists chiefly of examples from the 19th century. Many photographs are of medical scenes such as operations and examinations. Joshua P. Smith has returned to collecting art photographs after concentrating for a time on prints. Smith prefers photographs that are intense and powerful rather than merely decorative. Smith believes that curators and museums will play greater role in fostering connoisseurship among the public.
