The eight-chain RF system and radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac were successfully integrated at the facility of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc). We achieved an unprecedented high current deuteron beam up to 55 mA in pulse operation ( $300~\mu \text{s}$ , 1 Hz). The keys of the success were (1) understanding reflected power from RFQ to RF system, (2) tuning each RF chain individually, (3) intensive RF conditioning for holding the stable RF power in the RFQ, and (4) optimizing the beam loading compensation control. Interestingly, the reflection at the breakdown in RF conditioning was higher than an estimation and reached up to 600 kW so far. In order to avoid damage on tetrodes by the high reflection, the impedance of each circulator was accurately adjusted.

The detailed shielding analysis has been performed in order to find a configuration of the radiation shielding in the accelerator building necessary for the operation of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc), which is under construction in Rokkasho, Japan, at the full power of 1.125 MW to satisfy the radiation dose limit prescribed by Japanese regulations. The final design of the beam dump constructed by CIEMAT, Spain was fully taken into consideration. The impact of all the features potentially causing neutron streaming were investigated and the optimization of local additional shieldings were conducted. As the result, the most important one was found to be the air ventilation duct shield, which completely covers the ducts and creates an additional labyrinth. By considering the additional shielding configuration determined in the present study, the legal criteria at the controlled area boundary can be completely satisfied.

International audience; Design, development, manufacturing, and test activities of the RF power system (RFPS) for Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) were completed in Europe. Installation and commissioning activities were carried out at the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (IFMIF/EVEDA) site in Rokkasho, Japan. Challenging IFMIF requirements led to a number of innovations during design and development. Commissioning required a major effort on calibration and fine setting and led to development of new functionalities. The RFPS was validated under full power and 125-mA deuteron beam loading conditions, in the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), demonstrating good performance. This article is an overview about how technical challenges impacted the prototype RFPS design and its functional evolution during commissioning, cavity conditioning, and beam operation of the RFQ.

International audience; LIPAc is the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator developed within the framework of the IFMIF project under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement signed between EURATOM and the Japanese Government in 2007. The IFMIF accelerator aims to provide an accelerator-based D-Li neutron source to produce high intensity neutron fluxes with appropriate energy spectrum in order to characterize materials envisioned for future fusion reactors. Because the IFMIF accelerator has to reach unprecedented performances, the feasibility is being tested through the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing activities of a 1:1-scale prototype accelerator, namely LIPAc, from the injector to the first cryomodule together with the High Energy Beam Transport line and the High Power Beam Dump. After outstanding results obtained in 2019, the LIPAc project has entered 2020 in the preparation of the third commissioning stage, i.e., validation in continuous-wave mode of the complete accelerator up to 5 MeV with its final beam dump. The validation until the nominal energy of 9 MeV will be made after the completion of cryomodule assembly. After a brief overview of the goals already achieved in the framework of the IFMIF/EVEDA program, this paper will present a synthesis of the results that have been obtained so far with the LIPAc accelerator as well as the future developments planned beyond 2020.

The IFMIF accelerator facility consists of 2 identical linacs, each accelerating a 125 mA CW deuteron beam up to the energy of 40 MeV. In order to reach these unprecedented performances, the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is under installation and commissioning at the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan, in the framework of the IFMIF/EVEDA project, which is part of the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and EU. The accelerator is designed to validate components up to 125 mA CW deuteron beam at 9 MeV. The accelerator components of LIPAc have been designed and manufactured mainly by European Institutes. The injector and superconducting linac, RFQ, MEBT, Diagnostics Plate, HEBT and beam dump have been developed respectively by CEA-Saclay, INFN-Legnaro and CIEMAT-Madrid and were delivered to Rokkasho between 2013 and 2016. The commissioning of the injector with beam started in November 2014. This paper dealt with the experimental data obtained with the beam diagnostics of the injector. The electrical measurements of the beam intensity on the beam stopper were compared with calorimetric measurements. The beam profiles measured with a CCD camera and a custom image-intensified CID camera are also addressed. The analysis of beam emittance and ion species fractions from data obtained with an Allison scanner is described and the results of species fraction measurements are compared with those obtained by using a deported spectrometer. Finally, the analysis of beam space potential from data obtained with a 4-Grid analyser is presented.

The construction of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is in progress in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the low energy section of an IFMIF deuteron accelerator up to 9 MeV with a beam current of 125 mA in CW. The next milestone of the project is the so-called Phase-B beam commissioning, and one of the missions is to demonstrate the acceleration of the proton beam up to 2.5 MeV or the deuteron beam up to 5.0 MeV in pulsed mode with a low duty cycle of 0.1% through RFQ. Most of the components and subsystems necessary for Phase-B were delivered by 2016 under the responsibility of Fusion for Energy (F4E) as in-kind contributions of several European institutes, namely CEA (France), CIEMAT (Spain), INFN (Italy), and SCK-CEN (Belgium), and QST is in charge of the installation of the delivered equipment. The installation and check-out of the RFQ subsystem and the RF power system was completed by July 2017, and the RF conditioning of the RFQ cavity started. Also, the installation and the check-out of the important sub-systems for Phase-B, namely MEBT and beam diagnostics, have been completed. The Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linac and 1.6 MW RF power system of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) facility in the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho (Japan) has been installed and conditioned. During the assembly and tuning process, the RFQ cavity was protected with a temporary tent from the potential deterioration of performance caused by dust. The vacuum in the cavity was improved through the 100 °C baking process of the cavity. The high power test of the 175 MHz RF systems up to 200 kW in CW for each of the eight RF chains was performed for checking its stable output reproducibility in Japan, before connecting 9–3/16 inch coaxial transmission lines from the RF chains to the RF input couplers of the cavity. It was confirmed that the eight RF chains provided the balanced RF power to the single RFQ cavity in-phase using a feedback loop and a synchronization system. The peak power in the cavity achieved 150 kW in the pulsed mode, which corresponds approximately to the required electric field to accelerate proton beam. Such RF conditioning process is ongoing to achieve 600 kW approximately required for deuteron beam commissioning planned in 2018.

The validation of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is being conducted in Rokkasho Fusion Institute of QST, Aomori, Japan. The beam commissioning of the novel LIPAc RFQ has been progressing significantly, and the acceleration of the world highest current deuteron beam of 125 mA to 5 MeV (1 ms, 1 Hz pulsed beam) was achieved for the 1st time in July 2019. This study is devoted to evaluating the amount of beam loss during the high current acceleration phase by measuring the neutron produced by the interaction of the beam with accelerator components so as to verify the accelerator design. The foil activation method and the 3He neutron probes were utilized. It turned out that there was no significant trace of unexpected beam loss at the high energy section of the RFQ and the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) section.The measurement using the 3He neutron probes provided an evidence that the beam loss was well controlled in the RFQ cavity as designed. This study concludes that the LIPAc RFQ as well as MEBT is working well as predicted by the design calculation, and its concept is successful.

The International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) aims at qualifying and characterizing materials capable to withstand the intense neutron flux originated in the D-T reactions of future fusion reactors by a neutron flux with a broad peak at 14 MeV, capable to provide >20 dpa/fpy on small specimens, also qualified in this engineering validation engineering design activity (EVEDA) phase. Its broad mandate has been successfully achieved, only pending the validation of its accelerator with its conventional facilities. The validation of the IFMIF’s accelerators will be achieved in this on-going phase, until December 2019, with the operation of a deuteron accelerator at 125 mA CW mode and 9 MeV, which is presently under installation and commissioning in Rokkasho (Japan). The target availability of the IFMIF facility, 70%, is one of its main challenges because it demands an extraordinary individual availability of the sub-systems, such as the accelerator, with 87%. The linear IFMIF prototype accelerator (LIPAc) presents a broad spectrum of ancillary equipment to optimize its operational beam time. A description of the nuclear HVAC of IFMIF has already been reported (Pruneri et al., 2016) [1] . The present paper describes the design of the conventional systems of LIPAc, among which we address the electrical power supply, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), the heat rejection system (HRS), the service water system (SWS), the service gas system (SGS), the cryoplant system (Cryo), and the fire protection system (FPS).

The Linear IFMIF (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility) Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is a 9 MeV, 125 mA, continuous wave (CW) deuteron accelerator aimed to validate the technology for the IFMIF accelerators. The construction of LIPAc, which is currently the most powerful deuteron accelerator in the world, has been carried out under the Broader Approach (BA) Agreement between EU and Japan, and it is located at Rokkasho (Japan). CIEMAT is one of the five European Institutions that has participated in the design, manufacturing and commissioning/operation of the main accelerator components, among them, the Radio Frequency Power System (RFPS). The RFPS contains all the equipment necessary to generate the required RF power to feed the LIPAc cavities. These cavities demand eighteen RF power chains at 175 MHz being distributed as follows: eight 200 kW tetrode-based chains for the Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ), two 16 kW solid-state chains for the re-buncher cavities, and eight 105 kW tetrode-based chains for the Superconducting RF Linac Half-Wave Resonators. The design of the RFPS main components is presented in this paper, including the tetrode-based chains, the Solid-State Power Amplifier (SSPA) for the re-buncher cavities, the High Voltage Power Supplies (HVPSs) for the final amplifiers anodes and the RF water cooling system. Additionally, the main difficulties encountered during the first months of the RFPS commissioning and operation will be described, together with the applied improvements.

The voltage transient appearing across and inside the toroidal field (TF) coils of JT-60SA in case of fast voltage variation, such as a safety discharge operated by the quench protection circuit (QPC), can be significantly high. In fact, the voltage distribution between coils and inside the winding can be not uniform during fast transient, being influenced by the presence of parasitic capacitances. A simplified electrical model of the TF coils has been developed to investigate this aspect. Its robustness has been proved by means of parametric sensitivity analysis, and the impact of the included simplifications has been evaluated. The obtained model has been used in conjunction with an electrical model of the TF circuit elements, including a simplified model of the QPC able to reproduce the voltage appearing across its terminals as observed during experimental operation of the QPC prototype. The worst case in terms of transient voltage applied to the winding has been identified, corresponding to a fault to ground occurring just after QPC operation. It has been verified that the resulting voltage is largely inside the coil insulation capability defined by performed insulation voltage tests.

For the development of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) aiming at material tests for fusion power plants, the construction of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) has been conducted at Rokkasho, Japan under the Broader Approach Agreement. The commissioning of LIPAc has been progressing significantly. The world most powerful RFQ successfully accelerated proton beam of 58 mA, and an important project milestone of the acceleration of deuteron beam to 5 MeV with the beam current of 125 mA in pulse mode was successfully achieved. The result proves the validity of the present RFQ design. The adjustment and tuning of the RF power system and the injector for enabling an operation at maximum performances played an important role in achieving this result. For the next step, the preparation of the high duty cycle operation of RFQ is underway. The installation of the HEBT (High Energy Beam Transport line) and the beam dump accepting 1 MW, CW beam, has been completed and a new beam transport line is under manufacturing. Also the assembly of the Superconducting RF (SRF) linac to accelerate the beam up to 9 MeV started in a clean room in Rokkasho.

The Linear IFMIF (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility) Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is aiming at demonstrating the low energy section of a 40 MeV/125 mA IFMIF deuteron accelerator up to 9 MeV with a full beam current in cw operation. For such a high-power beam, the LIPAc injector is required to produce a 100 keV D+ beam with 140 mA and match it for injection into the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator. The injector is designed by CEA-Saclay based on the high intensity light ion source (SILHI). In 2019, the commissioning of the RFQ to demonstrate the D+ beam acceleration at a low duty cycle (0.1%) was conducted. A nominal beam current of 125 mA D+ beam was accelerated up to 5 MeV through the RFQ successfully. The LIPAc injector fully satisfied the requirements for RFQ beam commissioning at the pulse mode.

in turn, the commissioning of the 5 MeV beam is due to start during 2017. The D+ beam through the superconducting cavities is expected to be achieved within the Broader Approach Agreement time frame with the superconducting cryomodule being assembled in Rokkasho. The realisation of a fusion-relevant neutron source is a necessary step for the successful development of fusion. The ongoing success of the IFMIF/EVEDA involves ruling out concerns about potential technical showstoppers which were raised in the past. Thus, a situation has emerged where soon steps towards constructing a Li(d,xn) fusion-relevant neutron source could be taken, which is also justified in the light of costs which are marginal to those of a fusion plant. © 2017 IAEA, Vienna., IFMIF, the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility, is presently in its engineering validation and engineering design activities (EVEDA) phase under the Broader Approach Agreement. The engineering design activity (EDA) phase was successfully accomplished within the allocated time. The engineering validation activity (EVA) phase has focused on validating the Accelerator Facility (AF), the Target Facility and the Test Facility (TF) by constructing prototypes. The ELTL at JAEAc, Oarai successfully demonstrated the long-term stability of a Li flow under the IFMIF's nominal operational conditions keeping the specified free-surface fluctuations below 1 mm in a continuous manner for 25 d. A full-scale prototype of the high flux test module (HFTM) was successfully tested in the HELOKA loop (KIT, Karlsruhe), where it was demonstrated that the irradiation temperature can be set individually and kept uniform. LIPAc, designed and constructed in European labs under the coordination of F4E, presently under installation and commissioning in the Rokkasho Fusion Institute, aims at validating the concept of IFMIF accelerators with a D+ beam of 125 mA continuous wave (CW) and 9 MeV. In the framework of the Engineering Design and Engineering Validation Activities for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF/EVEDA), three major prototypes have been designed and are being manufactured, commissioned and operated which are firstly the Accelerator Prototype (LIPAc) at Rokkasho, fully representative of the IFMIF low energy (9 MeV) accelerator stage, secondly the EVEDA Lithium Test Loop (ELTL) at Oarai, and thirdly critical components of the High Flux Test Modules to be tested in the helium cooling loop (HELOKA-LP) at Karlsruhe. The present paper analyses possibilities from a technical point of view, for combining, modifying, and enhancing, at limited cost, selected components of the prototypes towards the realisation of an early reduced-flux neutron source, able nonetheless to start the testing of candidate DEMO materials and realising by this a first step towards the construction and operation of a complete IFMIF plant. Various options of deuteron beam parameters, such as energy, current and shape are analysed with respect to their technical challenges and the neutron yield resulting from the nuclear reaction with the Li target. Related requirements for the liquid Li target with respect to jet parameters are evaluated and the neutron mapping in the high flux region is presented underlying an analysis of the available volume for testing reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steels at relevant structural damage levels.

A linear representation T*n(K) of a point set K is a point-line geometry, embedded in a projective space PG(n+1; q), where K is contained in a hyperplane. We put constraints on K which ensure that every automorphism of T*n(K) is induced by a collineation of the ambient projective space. This allows us to show that, under certain conditions, two linear representations T*n(K) and T*n(K′) are isomorphic if and only if the point sets K and K′ are PΓL-equivalent. We also deal with the slightly more general problem of isomorphic incidence graphs of linear representations. In the last part of this paper, we give an explicit description of the group of automorphisms of T*n(K) that are induced by collineations of PG(n + 1; q).

During the EVEDA (engineering validation and engineering design activities) phase of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) project, a 125 mA/9 MeV linear prototype accelerator (LIPAc) has to be built, tested and operated in Rokkasho-mura (Japan). Involved in this project for several years, CEA-Saclay designed the injector of this accelerator which is composed of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, delivering a 140 mA deuteron beam at 100 keV, and a low energy beam transport (LEBT) line to match the beam for the injection into the radio-frequency quadrupole. In this paper, the components of the LIPAc injector are described. The commissioning of the ion source and LEBT with beam started in November 2014. The different phases of the commissioning are explained and some noticeable experimental results obtained with a beam at 100 keV are presented.

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) Engineering Design and Engineering Validation Activities (EVEDA) are being developed in a joint project in the framework of the Broader Approach (BA) Agreement between EU and Japan. This project has now entered into a crucial phase as the engineering design of IFMIF is now being formulated in a series of 3 subsequent phases for delivering an Interim IFMIF Engineering Design Report (IIEDR) by mid of 2013. Content of these phases is explained, including the plant configuration detailing the 5 IFMIF facilities and their systems. Together with the Engineering Design Activities, prototyping sub-projects are pursued in the Engineering Validation Activities which consist of the design, manufacturing and testing of the following prototypical systems: Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc), EVEDA Lithium Test Loop (ELTL), and High Flux Test Module (HFTM) with the prototypical helium cooling loop (HELOKA). The paper describes the main features of the Superconducting Magnets Power Supply to generate the toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields in JT-60SA tokamak, with special regard to coil current regulation mode and magnets protection.

In the initial research phase of JT-60SA, which is the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) satellite Tokamak with superconducting toroidal and poloidal magnetic field coils, the plasma heating operation of 30 MW-60 s or 20 MW-100 s is planned for 5.5 MA single null divertor plasmas. To achieve this operation, AC power source of the medium voltage of 18 kV and ∼7 GJ has to be provided in total to the poloidal field coil power supplies and additional heating devices such as neutral beam injection (NBI) and electron cyclotron radio frequency (ECRF). In this paper, the proposed AC power supply system in JT-60SA was estimated from the view point of available power, and harmonic currents based on the standard plasma operation scenario during the initial research phase. This AC power supply system consists of the reused JT-60 power supply facilities including motor generators with flywheel, AC breakers, harmonic filters, etc., to make it cost effective. In addition, the conceptual design of the upgraded AC power supply system for the ultimate heating power of 41 MW-100 s in the extended research phase is also described.

The necessity of a neutron source for fusion materials research was identified already in the 70s. Though neutrons induced degradation present similarities on a mechanistic approach, thresholds energies for crucial transmutations are typically above fission neutrons spectrum. The generation of He via 56 Fe (n,α) 53 Cr in future fusion reactors with around 12 appm/dpa will lead to swelling and structural materials embrittlement. Existing neutron sources, namely fission reactors or spallation sources lead to different degradation, attempts for extrapolation are unsuccessful given the absence of experimental observations in the operational ranges of a fusion reactor. Neutrons with a broad peak at 14 MeV can be generated with Li(d,xn) reactions; the technological efforts that started with FMIT in the early 80s have finally matured with the success of IFMIF/EVEDA under the Broader Approach Agreement. The status today of five technological challenges, perceived in the past as most critical, are addressed. These are: 1. the feasibility of IFMIF accelerators, 2. the long term stability of lithium flow at IFMIF nominal conditions, 3. the potential instabilities in the lithium screen induced by the 2 × 5 MW impacting deuteron beam, 4. the uniformity of temperature in the specimens during irradiation, and 5. the validity of data provided with small specimens. Other ideas for fusion material testing have been considered, but they possibly are either not technologically feasible if fixed targets are considered or would require the results of a Li(d,xn) facility to be reliably designed. In addition, today we know beyond reasonable doubt that the cost of IFMIF, consistently estimated throughout decades, is marginal compared with the cost of a fusion reactor. The less ambitious DEMO reactor performance being considered correlates with a lower need of fusion neutrons flux; thus IFMIF with its two accelerators is possibly not needed since with only one accelerator as the European DONES or the Japanese A-FNS propose, the present needs > 10 dpa/fpy would be fulfilled. World fusion roadmaps stipulate a fusion relevant neutron source by the middle of next decade, the success of IFMIF/EVEDA phase is materializing this four decades old dream.

We classify all firm and residually connected coset geometries satisfying the intersection property (IP)2, and on which the group S5×2 acts flag-transitively and residually weakly primitively. This work was motivated by a study of the Ivanov–Shpectorov coset geometry for the O'Nan sporadic simple group (see Buekenhout, Leemens, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85(2) (1999) 148). The importance of having a list of residually weakly primitive coset geometries for S5×2 is also shown by Buekenhout et al. (in: A. Pasini et al. (Eds.), Groups and Geometries, Birkhäuser, Basel 1998, pp. 39–54) and Buekenhout and Dony (Bull. Soc. Math. Belg. XLII (1990) 471). We extend the concept of direct sum introduced by Valette in (Simon Stevin 56(3) (1982) 167) to coset geometries and show that all coset geometries are either direct sums of coset geometries of S5 and 2 satisfying the same properties or are extensions of lower rank coset geometries given by a theorem of Leemans’ (see Leemons, Master's Thesis, Vol. 1, Université Libre de Bruxelles, 1994.).

In the framework of the ITER broader approach, the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) deuteron accelerator (2 × 125 mA at 40 MeV) is an irradiation tool dedicated to high neutron flux production for future nuclear plant material studies. During the validation phase, the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) machine will be tested on the Rokkasho site in Japan. This demonstrator aims to produce 125 mA/9 MeV deuteron beam. Involved in the LIPAc project for several years, specialists from CEA/Saclay designed the injector based on a SILHI type ECR source operating at 2.45 GHz and a 2 solenoid low energy beam line to produce such high intensity beam. The whole injector, equipped with its dedicated diagnostics, has been then installed and tested on the Saclay site. Before shipment from Europe to Japan, acceptance tests have been performed in November 2012 with 100 keV deuteron beam and intensity as high as 140 mA in continuous and pulsed mode. In this paper, the emittance measurements done for different duty cycles and different beam intensities will be presented as well as beam species fraction analysis. Then the reinstallation in Japan and commissioning plan on site will be reported.

We determine all residually weakly primitive flag-transitive geometries for the groups PSL(2,11) and PGL(2,11). For the first of these we prove the existence by simple constructions while uniqueness, namely the fact that the lists are complete, relies on MAGMA programs. A central role is played by the subgroups Alt(5) in PSL(2,11). The highest rank of a geometry in our lists is four. Our work is related to various ‘atlases’ of coset geometries.

We study an equifacetted self dual 3-sphere S McM of Peter McMullen, [10], in particular its automorphism group A(S McM ) and its relation to the Coxeter group H 4 of the 600-cell. A closely related equifacetted polyhedral 3-sphere (240-cell) with 240 facets and 120 vertices has the same automorphism group. Both these 3-spheres and the polar dual of the last one cannot occur as the boundary complex of a (convex) 4-polytope with A(S McM ) as their full Euclidean symmetry. It is an open problem, whether there exist one of these three 4-polytopes at all. Their combinatorial symmetry would differ from their Euclidean one within their whole realization space, similar to the example given in [3], see also [2]. Tackling these problems with methods from computational synthetic geometry [5] fail because of the large problem size. Therefore, a partial Euclidean symmetry assumption for the questionable polytope is natural. On the other hand, we show that even a certain subgroup of order 5 of the full combinatorial symmetry group A(S McM ) of order 1200 cannot occur as a Euclidean symmetry for McMullen's questionable polytope.

We give a general construction leading to different non-isomorphic families $\varGamma_{n,q}(\mathcal{K})$ of connected q-regular semisymmetric graphs of order 2q n+1 embedded in $\operatorname{PG}(n+1,q)$ , for a prime power q=p h , using the linear representation of a particular point set $\mathcal{K}$ of size q contained in a hyperplane of $\operatorname{PG}(n+1,q)$ . We show that, when $\mathcal{K}$ is a normal rational curve with one point removed, the graphs $\varGamma_{n,q}(\mathcal{K})$ are isomorphic to the graphs constructed for q=p h in Lazebnik and Viglione (J. Graph Theory 41, 249---258, 2002) and to the graphs constructed for q prime in Du et al. (Eur. J. Comb. 24, 897---902, 2003). These graphs were known to be semisymmetric but their full automorphism group was up to now unknown. For q?n+3 or q=p=n+2, n?2, we obtain their full automorphism group from our construction by showing that, for an arc $\mathcal{K}$ , every automorphism of $\varGamma_{n,q}(\mathcal{K})$ is induced by a collineation of the ambient space $\operatorname{PG}(n+1,q)$ . We also give some other examples of semisymmetric graphs $\varGamma _{n,q}(\mathcal{K})$ for which not every automorphism is induced by a collineation of their ambient space.

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) linear IFMIF prototype accelerator injector dedicated to high intensity deuteron beam production has been designed, built, and tested at CEA/Saclay between 2008 and 2012. After the completion of the acceptance tests at Saclay, the injector has been fully sent to Japan. The re-assembly of the injector has been performed between March and May 2014. Then after the check-out phase, the production of the first proton beam occurred in November 2014. Hydrogen and deuteron beam commissioning is now in progress after having proceeded with the final tests on the entire injector equipment including high power diagnostics. This article reports the different phases of the injector installation pointing out the safety and security needs, as well as the first beam production results in Japan and chopper tests. Detailed operation and commissioning results (with H(+) and D(+) 100 keV beams) are reported in a second article.

In this paper we study loops, neardomains and nearfields from a categorical point of view. By choosing the right kind of morphisms, we can show that the category of neardomains is equivalent to the category of sharply 2-transitive groups. The other categories are also shown to be equivalent with categories whose objects are sets of permutations with suitable extra properties. Up to now the equivalence between neardomains and sharply 2-transitive groups was only known when both categories were equipped with the obvious isomorphisms as morphisms. In this paper, we study the isomorphism problem for linear representations. A linear representation Tn*(K) of a point set K is a point-line geometry, embedded in a projective space PG(n+1,q), where K is contained in a hyperplane. We put constraints on K which ensure that every automorphism of Tn*(K) is induced by a collineation of the ambient projective space. This allows us to show that, under certain conditions, two linear representations Tn*(K) and Tn*(K') are isomorphic if and only if the point sets K and K' are PGammaL-equivalent. We also deal with the slightly more general problem of isomorphic incidence graphs of linear representations. In the last part of this paper, we give an explicit description of the group of automorphisms of Tn*(K) that are induced by collineations of PG(n+1,q)., 14 pages

We develop a theory for quotients of geometries and obtain sufficient conditions for the quotient of a geometry to be a geometry. These conditions are compared with earlier work on quotients, in particular by Pasini and Tits. We also explore geometric properties such as connectivity, firmness and transitivity conditions to determine when they are preserved under the quotienting operation. We show that the class of coset pregeometries, which contains all flag-transitive geometries, is closed under an appropriate quotienting operation., 26 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we try to find the optimal number of partitions to be made in a piece of software. A model is made for the time-to-market, with respect to which this number is optimized. Refinements are made in this model, taking into account capacity constraints and waiting times. Also, a suggestion is made to use pairwise testing.

We investigated the benefit of exploiting the symmetries of graphs for partitioning. We represent the model to be simulated by a weighted graph. Graph symmetries are studied in the theory of permutation groups and can be calculated in polynomial time with the nauty algorithm by B. McKay (1981). We designed an algorithm to extract useful symmetries from the automorphism group, which can be used to create partitions derived from the graph's structure. Our approach is focused on composite graphs, for which identical subgraphs reoccur in the graph. If these identical subgraphs can be mapped onto each other by symmetries, the subgraphs are replaced by equivalent multivertices, resulting in a 'natural' aggregation of vertices. This approach is applied to parallel simulation of a detailed IP-switch with a conservative synchronous algorithm. The experimental results show that even for good partitions, global and temporal load imbalances are inevitable.
