1. Exploring Pre-Implementation Perceptions of Integrated Care in a University Setting

Abstract

Objective: To examine providers' perceptions of integrated care prior to the merger of a university's student health center and counseling services. Participants: Seventeen providers across student health services (n = 9) and counseling (n = 8) agreed to participate in the qualitative study. Method: Semi-structured individual interviews that focused on the perceived benefits and challenges of the merger were conducted in December 2019. Following the interviews, a thematic analysis was completed. Results: The perceived benefits noted by providers centered on the ability of an interdisciplinary team to improve the coordination of, access to, and quality of care delivered to students. However, more anticipated challenges were reported by providers (e.g., differences in training and care protocols, losing one's autonomy as a provider). Conclusions: This qualitative study provides a more in-depth analysis of providers' perceptions of integrated care prior to implementation in a university setting and may have implications for model adoption.

4. Parents' Preferences for Primary Care-Based Behavioral Services and the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mixed Method Study

Abstract

Objective: This study examined how family factors impacted parents' attitudes toward integrated behavioral health (IBH) in pediatric primary care during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that COVID-19 impact would predict family functioning challenges, and that pre-existing familial contextual factors would predict parents' interest in IBH modalities. Methods: Parents of children ages 1.5-5 years (N = 301) from five primary care clinics completed a survey with measures assessing familial contextual factors (income, race and ethnicity, and parents' childhood adversity), COVID-19 impact on family relationships and wellbeing, family functioning (child behavior, parenting self-efficacy, and parent psychological functioning), and parents' preferences for behavioral support in primary care. A subsample of parents (n = 23) completed qualitative interviews to provide deeper insights into quantitative relationships. Results: Higher COVID-19 impact was significantly associated with worse parent mental health and child behavior problems, as well as lower interest in IBH virtual support options. Overall, lower SES and racial and/or ethnic minority parents both indicated greater interest in IBH modalities compared to higher SES and White parents, respectively. Qualitative interviews identified how pandemic stressors led to increases in parents' desire for behavioral support from pediatricians, with parents sharing perspectives on the nature of support they desired, including proactive communication from providers and variety and flexibility in the behavioral supports offered. Conclusions: Findings have important implications for the provision of behavioral supports for families in primary care, underlying the need to increase parents' access to IBH services by proactively providing evidence-based resources and continuing to offer telehealth support. 5. COVID-19 Distress, Negative Parenting, and Child Behavioral Problems: The Moderating Role of Parent Adverse Childhood Experiences

Abstract

Background: Heightened familial stress and distress during the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to increased negative parenting practices, particularly for parents with substantial adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Objective: To determine whether families' COVID-19-related distress is associated with young children's emotional/behavioral functioning via negative parenting, and whether these relationships vary based on parents' ACEs. Participants and Setting: Participants were 267 parents of children ages 1.5-5 years recruited from five primary care sites across the United States. Methods: Participants completed internet questionnaires including measures of demographics, parent ACES, negative parenting, parent mental health, and COVID-19 distress. We used regression analyses to test a moderated mediation model in which the relationship between COVID-19 distress and child emotional/behavioral problems is mediated by negative parenting, and both the direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 distress on child emotional/behavioral problems is moderated by parents' ACEs. Results: Negative parenting significantly mediated the relationship between COVID-19 distress and child emotional/behavioral problems (indirect effect [beta]=0.07). Parents' ACEs moderated the associations between COVID-19 distress and both negative parenting and child emotional/behavioral problems, such that each relationship was stronger in the context of higher parental ACEs. The model accounted for 42% of the variance in child emotional/behavioral problems. Conclusions: Findings have implications for managing risk and promoting well-being in young children during periods of significant stress and routine disruption. This study advances understanding of factors influencing negative outcomes in children during the pandemic's acute phase and may have implications for the development of targeted interventions to improve families' adjustment in the future. Abstract

In this article, we present the first detailed simulation of the antineutrino emissions from an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) core, benchmarked with input data from the UK Hartlepool reactors. An accurate description of the evolution of the antineutrino spectrum of reactor cores is needed to assess the performance of antineutrino-based monitoring concepts for nonproliferation, including estimations of the sensitivity of the antineutrino rate and spectrum to fuel content and reactor thermal power. The antineutrino spectral variation we present, while specific to AGRs, helps provide insight into the likely behavior of other reactor designs that use a similar batch refueling approach, such as those used in RBMK, CANDU and other reactors., Comment: 8 Pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Virtual exchanges through the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP) allow instructors to design collaborations that engage students in global, international, and intercultural (GII) competencies, which are increasingly emphasised through the ongoing process of internationalisation of higher education. This article constitutes a practice report that describes two TAPP virtual exchanges designed by an instructor in Spain and one in the United States between master’s level translation students at a research university in Spain and 1) undergraduate students enrolled in a specialised technical writing course at a research university in the U.S. and 2) students in a graduate editing course at a regional university in the U.S. A content analysis of pre- and postlearning reports authored by the translation students demonstrates that students engaged in GII competencies such as openness, adaptability, and intercultural communication, which further reinforced the internationalisation of the curriculum.

17. Trajectories of U.S. Parents’ Remote Work during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic had numerous consequences for work and family, but one of the most important was the substantial increase in remote work. Despite interest in changes to remote work and questions about whether the new environment of remote work will persist long-term, we know little about variation in workers’ experiences with remote work since the beginning of the pandemic. In this data visualization, we use longitudinal data on U.S. working parents from 2020–2023 and group-based trajectory models to illustrate varying patterns of remote work for partnered parents. The heterogeneity of parents’ experiences with remote work throughout the pandemic reveals important nuances not previously identified in tracking polls and highlights important gender differences that likely had implications for mothers’ and fathers’ well-being and gender equality.

20. Racially Biased High-School Support? The Heterogeneous Effects of Support on Bachelor-Degree Enrollment for First-Generation Immigrants

Abstract

First-generation immigrants (FGIs) are eager to achieve the American dream and acquire the advantages a bachelor's degree affords. FGIs compared to their second-generation, third-generation and native peers fare better educationally. But, this comparison obscures across racial variation within a single-nativity status. As such, it is important to understand what mechanisms might produce inequality in college access among FGIs. One mechanism may be differences in how schools support students for college-going. The content of support may vary if racial stereotypes affect how support is given. Such variations could be decisive for FGIs' educational trajectories. We find that Latinx and black FGIs are less likely than other FGIs to enroll in bachelor-degree programs. The content of school support is a mechanism that can help partially explain this differential for black FGIs. Our findings indicate that how schools support black FGIs for college-going is different and is likely at least implicitly racially biased.

29. Globular clusters as probes of dark matter cusp-core transformations

Abstract

Bursty star formation in dwarf galaxies can slowly transform a steep dark matter cusp into a constant density core. We explore the possibility that globular clusters (GCs) retain a dynamical memory of this transformation. To test this, we use the nbody6df code to simulate the dynamical evolution of GCs, including stellar evolution, orbiting in static and time-varying potentials for a Hubble time. We find that GCs orbiting within a cored dark matter halo, or within a halo that has undergone a cusp-core transformation, grow to a size that is substantially larger ($R_{\rm eff} > 10$ pc) than those in a static cusped dark matter halo. They also produce much less tidal debris. We find that the cleanest signal of an historic cusp-core transformation is the presence of large GCs with tidal debris. However, the effect is small and will be challenging to observe in real galaxies. Finally, we qualitatively compare our simulated GCs with the observed GC populations in the Fornax, NGC 6822, IKN and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies. We find that the GCs in these dwarf galaxies are systematically larger ($\langle R_{\rm eff}\rangle \simeq 7.8$ pc), and have substantially more scatter in their sizes, than in-situ metal rich GCs in the Milky Way and young massive star clusters forming in M83 ($\langle R_{\rm eff} \rangle \simeq 2.5$ pc). We show that the size, scatter and survival of GCs in dwarf galaxies are all consistent with them having evolved in a constant density core, or a potential that has undergone a cusp-core transformation, but not in a dark matter cusp., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

31. An Exploration into the Experience of Family Caregivers for People Living with Dementia in a Community Dance Class

Abstract

Community dance has been used as an arts-based approach in healthcare, key for expression in populations who may not typically have access to dance. This study sought to conduct an empirical exploration of family caregivers' perceived psychosocial wellbeing when regularly participating in community dance classes. Community dance can be defined as an activity that can enable creative, expressive, and inclusive experiences for those that take part, and, for this study, both caregivers and people living with dementia were able to participate in community dance classes of this nature. Using a qualitative research design, three family caregivers for people living with dementia diagnoses participated in semi-structured interviews. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the findings suggest that the spousal and adult-child caregivers perceive emotional and psychological benefits from dancing. The caregivers in this study emphasised that their community dance participation provided them with respite, reaffirmed relationship connectivity between caregiver and care-receiver, social engagement, and a rediscovered sense of identity. Findings offer insight into the appropriateness of dance as a method for alleviating potential psychological and social stressors experienced by family caregivers, advocating for greater availability of community dance classes for those experiencing dementia and their caregivers.
