Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is comprised primarily of two related diseases - chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Clinical research on the effects of swimming on the quality of the life of patients with various lung diseases showed that the use of water therapy programs have significant effects on the induction of pulmonary edema as well as on mild to moderate asthma. The case study presented in this study, aged 52, male, from urban area, smoker (30PA), with a weight of 96 kg and a height of 168 cm, was diagnosed with COPD in GOLD III std about 2 years ago and abdominal obesity. The functional examinations have revealed a mixed ventilatory dysfunction with FEV of 48.6% and 68.3% CV. The therapy with tiotropium and beta 2 agonists initiated as needed, along with physical therapy. After the application of aquatic programs for 6 months the results have highlighted significant changes in the lung functionality and the quality of everyday life.

Abstract

Background and Objectives COVID-19–related inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy may increase the bleeding risk and lower the efficacy of revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to evaluate the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS and COVID-19. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study of consecutive patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT) between March 2020 and June 2021 tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. With a doubly robust model combining propensity score weighting and multivariate regression, we studied the association of COVID-19 with intracranial bleeding complications and clinical outcomes. Subgroup analyses were performed according to treatment groups (IVT-only and EVT). Results Of a total of 15,128 included patients from 105 centers, 853 (5.6%) were diagnosed with COVID-19; of those, 5,848 (38.7%) patients received IVT-only and 9,280 (61.3%) EVT (with or without IVT). Patients with COVID-19 had a higher rate of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) (adjusted OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.16–2.01), symptomatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SSAH) (OR 1.80; 95% CI 1.20–2.69), SICH and/or SSAH combined (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.23–1.99), 24-hour mortality (OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.58–3.86), and 3-month mortality (OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.52–2.33). Patients with COVID-19 also had an unfavorable shift in the distribution of the modified Rankin score at 3 months (OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.26–1.60). Discussion Patients with AIS and COVID-19 showed higher rates of intracranial bleeding complications and worse clinical outcomes after revascularization treatments than contemporaneous non–COVID-19 patients receiving treatment. Abstract

Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas, which is divided into two types: acute pancreatitis, which can occur suddenly, and chronic pancreatitis, characterized by persistent inflammation of the pancreas. One of the most commonly cited causes of inflammation of the pancreas is inadequate nutrition in dogs and cats. Current research aims to clarify the need for species-differentiated nutritional management in both the prevention and treatment of pancreatic disorders. Medical studies that emphasize the dietary management of pancreatitis indicate the use of low residue and highly digestible diets in cats with pancreatic disorders, while in dogs low fat diets are recommended. The work aims to analyze the implementation of food products certified under quality schemes across the European Union from 1996 to 2024. The information obtained from the study of "eAmbrosia" database were analysed, processed and synthesized. The data entered and processed in this study aimed the entire period for which records exist (1996-2024). The aims of the research being: to identify the frequency of PGI, PDO and TSG certification; to compare the use of quality schemes according to the EU countries; to compare the use of certifications according to product classes; to compare the use of quality schemes across the EU countries according to product classes. The analysis of the share of products registered with each of the three quality schemes reveals that the majority are PGI registered (52.88%), followed by PDO products (42.70%) and TSG registered products at just 4.41%. In conclusion, the work provide a series of recommendations aimed at improving the current situation at both the European and national levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Overweight was identified and monitorized in a group of 23 cats that were included in a weight management programme at a veterinary clinic. The risk factors studied in the population of cats in relation with the body score (between 5.5-9 according to the body score scale provided by the WSAVA) were endogenous like breed, age, sex and neuter status of the cats. It was elaborated a specific questionnaire before the enrolment of cats in the weight management programme, asking the owners to complete about their cats' eating behaviour, the type of used feed and the amount of food intake, to establish the caloric intake that contributes to their body weight. The analysis of risk factors for feline obesity revealed exogenous causes that produce or enhance weight gain in cats, namely lack of room or limited space in which cats are kept, sedentary lifestyle and/or ad-libitum feeding offered by cat owners. Abstract

Consumers may be exposed to mineral oil hydrocarbon (MOH) contamination via packaged foods, but data on the occurrence of MOH are currently available only for a limited number of foods. In this work, we have carried out an indicative research proposal on the contamination with MOH migrated into milk via food contact material (FCM). Mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) were extracted by LC-GC-FID from three sample categories: food contact material (4 samples), milk in directly contact with FCM (4 samples) and milk with no contact with FCM (4 samples). Our results revealed an important contamination given by the contact materials, especially for the MOSH fraction, supported by a common contamination profile, confirmed in the analyzed milk samples. Quantitatively, the MOH contents were variable, with higher values in milk samples in direct contact with FCM, the increase in MOH concentrations being closely related to the important contamination values of FCM (105.4-116.6 mg/g MOSH; 4.3-4.9 mg/kg MOAH). Abstract

The present paper approaches the study of the adsorption of an acid dye on a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC). Batch experiments were conducted to study the equilibrium isotherms and kinetics of Indigo Carmine on GAC. The kinetic data were analyzed using the Lagargren, Ho, Elovich, Weber-Morris and Bangham models in order to establish the most adequate model that describes this process, and to investigate the rate of IC adsorption. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Langmuir isotherm equilibrium model and Ho kinetic model fitted best the experimental data.The effects of temperature (25 – 45 °C), initial concentration of dye (7.5 – 150 mg•L−1), GAC dose (0.02 – 1 g•L-1), particle size (2 – 7 mm in diameter), solution pH (3 – 11) on GAC adsorption capacity were established. The adsorption process is found to be favored by a neutral pH, high values of temperature and small particle sizes. The highest adsorption capacity (133.8 mg•g-1) of the GAC is obtained at 45 °C. The removal efficiency increases with GAC dose at relatively low initial concentrations of dye. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (H), standard entropy (S) and standard free energy (G) were evaluated. The adsorption of Indigo Carmine onto GAC is an endothermic process.

Abstract

We introduce a combinatorial approach for the fabrication of organic biopolymer thin films. Structures with compositional gradient are obtained by simultaneous laser vaporization of two distinct targets. Matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation deposition method was applied to obtain a compositional library of levan and oxidized levan in form of thin film. The gradient of film composition and structure was demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy while in vitro cell culture assays illustrated characteristic responses of cells to specific surface regions. Abstract

One can treat a viral infection such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infections via the delivery of pH sensitive liposomes directly into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Two exemplary liposome formulations are DOPE/CHEMS (DC liposomes) and DOPE/CHEMS/PEG-PE (DCPP liposomes). DC and DCPP liposomes can optimize the intracellular delivery of N -butyl deoxynojirimycin (NB-DNJ), and consequently increase the in vivo activity of this iminosugar several orders of magnitude, and could be used in combination with other therapeutic agents such as interferon and/or ribavirin. The optimized release of N B-DNJ directly into the ER can be also applied for the treatment of other viruses, for which NB-DNJ is known to be an effective antiviral, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Abstract

Combined cycle systems are an established method for increasing primary energy efficiency of power generation systems. Some ongoing research is concerned with investigating the novel combined cycle system involving the Otto and Stirling thermodynamic cycles. The Otto cycle is to act as the topping cycle, with the Stirling cycle acting to recover heat from the exhaust for the purpose of additional power generation. The present work investigates the thermodynamic optimisation of the combined cycle system for the case of the engines operating under two imposed parametric constraints: 1) imposed heat addition to the Otto cycle, and 2) imposed maximum cycle temperature of the Otto cycle. These conditions are analogous to a specified fuel consumption of the engine and the metallurgical limit of the operating components respectively. The optimum work output for each scenario is analysed with respect to the particular physical constraints of the Stirling cycle heat exchangers – effectiveness, NTU, heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer area. Only interactions between the engine and the external source and sink are considered in this treatment. Regeneration within the cycle, as would typically be used within the practical engine, is considered as perfect. The existence of an optimum power output for the combined system is proven analytically. A numerical study is then presented to further investigate the performance for each of the parameters named above.

The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal distribution of the heat transfer surface area or conductance among the Stirling engine heat exchangers when the minimum of the total heat transfer surface area of the heat exchangers is sought. The optimization procedure must fulfill one of the following constraints: (1) fixed power output of the engine, (2) fixed heat transfer rate available at the source, or (3) fixed power output and heat transfer rate at the source. Internal and external irreversibilities of the Stirling engine are considered. An analytic approach, when heat transfer occurs at small temperature differences at the heat reservoirs, provides several restrictions with regard to variables of the model. A sensitivity analysis of the minimum of the total heat transfer surface area of the heat exchangers with respect to these variables and parameters is presented. The results show optimal temperatures of the working fluid and optimum allocation of heat exchanger inventory.

Abstract

This paper presents preliminary data and results for a system mathematical model for a proposed Otto Cycle / Stirling Cycle hybrid-engine-based power generation system. The system is a combined cycle system with the Stirling cycle machine operating as a bottoming cycle on the Otto cycle exhaust. The application considered is that of a stationary power generation scenario wherein the Stirling cycle engine operates as a waste heat recovery device on the exhaust stream of the Otto cycle engine. This paper is primarily concerned with the development of a model for a suitable Stirling cycle engine capable of running on the high grade thermal energy present in the exhaust stream of the industrial Otto cycle engine under consideration. The Otto cycle engine is not modelled, with the relevant engine exhaust and performance parameters taken from published data. This was deemed a suitable step as the Otto cycle engine is an established technology and the engines on which the model is to be based are commercially available. Therefore use of the published data in this manner was favourable as it limited the extent of the model required and allowed focus on the Stirling cycle engine requirements. The modelling procedure for the Stirling engine follows the traditional sequence of Zero Order, First Order, Second Order as suggested in the classical literature. Zero Order analysis is completed in the form of the Beale analysis, First Order analysis utilises a Schmidt style method while the Second Order analysis utilises the Direct Method model. Modelling is based on data available for an industrial Otto engine system operating on natural gas, with the input variables being specified as the exhaust recoverable energy content and temperature at a constant speed of 1500rpm.

Abstract

The first attempt to unify Thermodynamics with Finite Speed (TFS) and Thermodynamics with Finite Time (TFT) has been achieved by Petrescu, Harman and Bejan in 1992. Since then, several papers that have been published played an essential role in the whole development of TFS, finally leading to the Validation of the Direct Method and TFS for 12 Stirling engines. The present paper presents the results of the second unification between TFS and TFT by taking into account in addition to the Finite Speed, two other causes of internal irreversibility in thermal machines, namely Friction and Throttling. In this way we achieved quantitatively what was very clearly explained by Thomson Kelvin only qualitatively, namely that "the main causes of irreversibility are: the finite speed, friction and throttling". In this work, the influence of the morphology of hydroxyapatite particles on silicon substitution through hydrothermal synthesis performed under the same conditions was investigated. Spherical- and whisker-like hydroxyapatite particles were obtained starting from calcium-nitrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and urea (used only for the synthesis of whisker-like particles) dissolved in aqueous solutions. Silicon was introduced into the solution using tetraethylorthosilicate. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that silicon doping induce different phase compositions and bioactivity of spherical- and whisker-like hydroxyapatite particles obtained under the same hydrothermal conditions. Silicon-substituted, spherical hydroxyapatites particles showed greater phase transformation to silicon-substituted alpha- calcium-phosphate compared with whiskers-like hydroxyapatite particles synthesized with the same amount of added silicon. Metabolic activity assay performed with SaOs2 osteosarcoma cells showed better biocompatibility of annealed biphasic spherical-like particles compared with annealed whiskerlike particles while dried spherical-like particles induce high cytotoxicity effect.

Abstract

We report on the synthesis by pulsed laser deposition with a KrF* excimer laser source (lambda = 248 nm, tau = 25 ns) of bioglass thin films of 6P57 and 6P61 types. Physiology, viability, and proliferation of human osteoblast cells were determined by quantitative in vitro tests performed by flow cytometry on primary osteoblasts cultured on pulsed laser deposited bioglasses. Both types of glass films proved to be appropriate mediums for cell survival and proliferation. In a parallel investigation, cell morphology and adhesion to the surface was studied by fluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Strong bonds between the materials and cells were found in both cases, as osteoblast pseudopodes penetrated deep into the material. According to our observations, the 6P57 glass films were superior with respect to viability and proliferation performances.

Abstract

Bioactive glass (BG), calcium hydroxyapatite (HA), and ZrO2 doped HA thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on Ti substrates. An UV KrF* (lambda = 248 nm, tau gt = 7 ns) excimer laser was used for the multi-pulse irradiation of the targets. The substrates were kept at room temperature or heated during the film deposition at values within the (400-550 degrees C) range. The depositions were performed in oxygen and water vapor atmospheres, at pressure values in the range (5-40 Pa). The HA coatings were heat post-treated for 6 h in a flux of hot water vapors at the same temperature as applied during deposition. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and crystalline quality of the obtained thin films were studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The films were seeded for in vitro tests with Hek293 (human embryonic kidney) cells that revealed a good adherence on the deposited layers. Biocompatibility tests showed that cell growth was better on HA than on BG thin films.

Abstract

At the Avram Iancu uranium mine in Romania, significant amounts of radioactive waste rock have accumulated and pose a major threat to the environment. Analysis of the particular conditions of the mine surroundings led to the conclusion that relocation of the contaminated material in the abandoned mine galleries would provide the most cost- effective long-term protection against radiation. After selection by radiological measurement, waste rock was transported from the heaps to the mine adits with a front-end loader and trucks for stowing in the cross-cuts at a volume of about 3 m3 per metre of gallery. Potential disturbances and risks considered included subsidence phenomena, topographic modifications, changes in hydrology and landslides; the selected locations were outside the influence of mining activity and were not in the vicinity of deep faults, with no major infiltration anticipated and the horizontal mine workings in good condition., At the Avram Iancu uranium mine in Romania, significant amounts of radioactive waste rock have accumulated and pose a major threat to the environment. Analysis of the particular conditions of the mine surroundings led to the conclusion that relocation of the contaminated material in the abandoned mine galleries would provide the most cost- effective long-term protection against radiation. After selection by radiological measurement, waste rock was transported from the heaps to the mine adits with a front-end loader and trucks for stowing in the cross-cuts at a volume of about 3 m3 per metre of gallery. Abstract

An investigation of the area around the former Ilisova uranium mines and pilot in-situ leaching plant, located 50 m from the Danube in a SW Romanian national park, included field measurement of gamma radiation, rock sampling and analysis for U, Ra, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni and Co, water sampling, determination of radon levels and the collecting of water, soil, sediment and vegetation samples from around the pilot plant. Cumulative doses were calculated on the basis of 5 months' exposure each year for 6 hours/day, as the houses in the area are for summer use only. The results showed that the plant activities had contaminated about 7 000 m2 of the surface as well as part of the groundwater of the former ore deposit.
