Straipsnio užuomazga gimė prieš daugelį metų Giedrei Jankevičiūtei susidomėjus fotografija iš Vaclovo Dargužo (Andreas Hofer) archyvo, atkeliavusio į Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekos Rankraščių skyrių. Fotografija vaizduoja Petro Rimšos statulėlės "Diena ir naktis" (1922) visafigūrę ir pusiaufigūrę versijas su greta pastatytomis atitinkamo formato dėžutėmis ir adresu odiniame aplanke. Pradėjus gilintis, kokia proga ir kam šis reprezentatyvus komplektas buvo skirtas, išaiškėjo, kad tai – valstybės prezidento Antano Smetonos dovana popiežiui Pijui XI Šv. Sosto ir Lietuvos Respublikos dvišalės sutarties – konkordato – proga. Platesnių žinių apie šį garsaus dailininko kūrinį tuo metu trūko net Rimšos palikimą Kaune saugančio Nacionalinio M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejaus darbuotojoms ir darbuotojams. Iki šiol išsamiausiame publikuotame Rimšos biografijos šaltinyje – Juozo Rimanto knygoje "Petras Rimša pasakoja" (1964) – statulėlės pristatytos kaip reikšmingas dailininko brandžiojo laikotarpio kūrinys, lietuvių tradiciniam menui artimomis priemonėmis įvaizdinęs universalią gyvenimo ciklo simboliką. [...] The article examines a significant but not fully explored episode in the history of Lithuanian diplomacy: the gift of Antanas Smetona, President of the Republic of Lithuania, to Pope Pius XI on the occasion of the Concordat, a bilateral treaty between the Holy See and the Republic of Lithuania signed on 27 September 1927. A look at this event from the perspective of the history of art raises new questions that reveal new circumstances. The gift, which consisted of two versions of the allegorical statuette Day and Night by the famous artist Petras Rimša (1881–1961), with the obverse and reverse of the commemorative medal of the founding of the ecclesiastical province of Lithuania (1927) on the pedestal of the full-figure version, was handed over to the Pope by Jurgis Šaulys, the representative of Lithuania to the Holy See, when presenting his credentials on 22 June 1927. However, reacting to the declaration of Nuncio Riccardo Bartoloni persona non grata and his expulsion from Kaunas early in the summer of 1931, the pope returned the halffigure version of the statuette, which was part of the gift of Antanas Smetona to the Holy See, to the Lithuanian representative to the Holy See. For a long time it was believed that both statuettes had been returned, but the article disproves this belief and reveals the fate of both statuettes. The study substantiates the possible motives for the choice of Rimša’s work for the representation of Lithuania in the Vatican, its reflection in Lithuania and beyond, associates Rimša’s work with the movement of renewal of ecclesiastical art, and reveals the influences experienced by this artist.

XIX a. antrojoje pusėje Europoje pradėjęs plisti japonizmas tapo vienu meninės kultūros modernizaciją skatinusią šaltinių. Kiek pavėluotai šis reiškinys pasiekė ir Lietuvą, kur susilaukė vietos dailininką ir intelektualų dėmesio. Nemažai jų savo rinkiniuose turėjo japoniškų graviūrų, jų kopijų ar Tolimųjų Rytų meno paveiktų objektų, prenumeravo su japonizmu susijusią periodiką ar net buvo įsigiję japoniškų leidinių. Dailėtyrininkė Gabrielė Mišeikytė rašo apie Pauliaus Galaunės ir Antano Žmuidzinavičiaus sąsajas su Tolimųjų Rytų menu ir bando apčiuopti japonų meno poveikį Petro Rimšos kūrybai, kelia kultūrinių ryšių bei meninių įtakų klausimus, į kuriuos bando atsakyti nagrinėdama kultūros veikėjų sąsajas su kaimyninėse šalyse bei Europos kultūros centruose vykusiais procesais. Japonisme started to spread in the second half of the 19th century in Europe, and became one of the factors which activated the modernisation of art culture. A little later, japonisme reached Lithuania, where it was given a lot of attention by local artists and intellectuals. Many of them had Japanese engravings in their collections, or copies of them, or objects influenced by the Far East. They subscribed to periodicals connected with japonisme, or even purchased Japanese publications. The art researcher Gabrielė Mišeikytė writes about the connection of Paulius Galaunė and Antanas Žmuidžinavičius to the art of the Far East. She tries to identify the influence of Japan in the art of Petras Rimša, and asks questions about cultural connections and artistic influences, which she attempts to answer by examining the connections between cultural personalities and processes in neighbouring countries and European cultural centres.

Prieš pirmąjį pasaulinį karą surengtos lietuvių dailės parodos buvo svarbus faktorius, atspindintis tautinę - politinę lietuvių situaciją ir jų apsisprendimą. Ypatingai tai buvo susiję su lietuvių ir lenkų konfliktu. 1912 m. parodoje eksponuota Petro Rimšos skulptūra "Kova" vaizdavo vyčio ir erelio kovą, o tai susilaukė didžiulio atgarsio. Ši Petro Rimšos skulptūra yra vienas geriausių jo ankstyvosios kūrybos darbų, ženklinusių ne tik Lietuvos dailės, bet ir apskritai lietuvių tautos emancipaciją, politinį apsisprendimą. "Kova" iš meninės metaforos virto lietuvių pasipriešinimo Lenkijai ir nepriklausomos Lietuvos simboliu, tarnavo kaip antilenkiška propaganda. Ši skulptūra deklaravo Lietuvą kaip nepriklausomą politinį subjektą, apie ką lietuvių tautos atstovai politikai prabilo 1918 m. The article looks into the political-cultural situation of Lithuania in the context of the tense relationship between the Lithuanians and the Polish. The story of the sculpture "The Conflict", created by P. Rimša, is considered in discussing the subject. The conclusion is made that the sculpture is one of the greatest works of his early period, the birth of which signified a certain level of emancipation of Lithuanian art and Lithuanian society in general, facilitating the courage to openly express political attitudes and a model of the nation's self-development strengthened by those attitudes.

Straipsnyje siekiama giliau suvokti daugialypę garsių XX a. pradžios lietuvių dailės kūrėjų Vytauto Bičiūno, Vladimiro Dubeneckio, Antano Jaroševičiaus, Viliaus Jomanto ir ypač – Petro Rimšos, palikimo prigimtį. Pagal susiklosčiusią tradiciją jų kūryba analizuojama atskirais segmentais, daugiausia dėmesio skiriant „grynosios“ dailės pavyzdžiams, t. y. tapybos, grafikos bei skulptūros darbams. Tuo tarpu visi minėti autoriai ne mažiau laiko bei energijos nei vaizduojamajai dailei yra atidavę „antriniams“ žanrams – knygų bei žurnalų grafikai, plakatų, reklaminių skelbimų, etikečių, smulkių interjero įrangos elementų projektavimui, viešųjų renginių apipavidalinimui, taip pat publicistikai. Ieškant perspektyvos, leidžiančios aprėpti šių autorių kūrybos visumą, atsigręžiama į jos radimosi bei gyvavimo kontekstą, t. y. aptariama, kaip pasikeitė požiūris į dailę ir apskritai į meninę kūrybą bei jos tikslus XIX a. II pusės Europoje ir Rusijoje, kaip tai paveikė Lietuvos teritorijoje gyvenusių dailininkų veiklą, iš kur jie sėmėsi idėjų, kokias konkrečias formas įgijo Meno ir amatų sąjūdžiui analogiški procesai, vykę etninės Lietuvos teritorijoje. Daroma išvada, jog Meno ir amatų sąjūdžio įtaka labiausiai pasireiškė siekiu kurti tautinio stiliaus taikomuosius dirbinius ir skatino plisti tautinio kostiumo madą, kolekcionuoti kaimo tradicinį meninį paveldą, o grįžtant prie dailės raidos, suformavo dailininko universalo, pajėgaus dirbti keliose kūrybos srityse, tipą, kuris buvo ypač populiarus ketvirtame ir penktame dešimtmetyje. The article seeks to deeper perceive the multiple nature of the heritage left by famous Lithuanian artists at the beginning of the 20th century – Vytautas Bičiūnas, Vladimiras Dubeneckis, Antanas Jaroševičius, Vilius Jomantas and especially Petras Rimša. Traditionally, their works are analysed in separate segments with the major attention focused on examples of the fine art, i.e. art, graphics and sculpture. Nevertheless, all the above mentioned artists devoted a great deal of time and energy to secondary genres such as graphics of books and magazines, posters, advertisings, label, small interior elements, decoration of public events and journalism. In order to embrace all the works of these authors, the author pays attention to the emergence and context of existence of these works, i.e. he discusses the way attitudes towards fine arts and art in general changed and their aims in the second half of the 19th century in Europe and Russia. The author also analyses they way these changes influenced activities of artists residing in Lithuania, sources of their inspiration. The author concludes that the impact of the Movement of Arts and Crafts was mostly expressed by the aspiration to create applied folk works and encouraged the dissemination of the national costume fashion. It formed the type of a universal artist able to work in several fields of art. This type was especially popular in the forth and fifth decades.
