Déjà, à la fin des années 1990, A. Plessis alertait les historiens sur la nécessaire prise en compte des développements théoriques en finance pour comprendre le comportement passé des banques. À cette époque, il suggérait que l’analyse des pratiques bancaires sous l’angle de l’asymétrie d’information éviterait aux historiens de s’enliser dans des jugements péjoratifs sur l’archaïsme des structures bancaires trop souvent ressassé. La recherche sur le financement des entreprises s’est considérablement étoffée théoriquement et empiriquement depuis plus d’une trentaine d’années. Dans ce chapitre, nous avons sélectionné trois problématiques qui peuvent utilement orienter l’historien tentant de comprendre les décisions de financement des manageurs des périodes passées : la théorie de la hiérarchie du financement, le risque des investisseurs dans les différents stades de développement des firmes et l’activisme des actionnaires. L’objectif est de montrer que les travaux empiriques des historiens doivent aussi mobiliser les théories financières afin d’obtenir les équilibres pertinents dans leur travail scientifique grâce à une confrontation féconde des champs disciplinaires Et le cas d’étude de la place de Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing en fournit une excellente occasion. As early as the late 1990s, Alain Plessis drew historians’ attention to the need to take account of theoretical developments in finance in order to understand the past behaviour of banks. At that time, he suggested that the analysis of banking practices in terms of information asymmetry would prevent historians from getting bogged down in pejorative judgments on archaic banking structures, too often rehashed. Research on corporate finance has grown theoretically and empirically for over thirty years. In this chapter, we selected three issues which can usefully guide the historian who is attempting to understand managerial financing decisions during past periods: the theory of hierarchy in financing, investor risk at the different stages in the development of firms, and shareholder activism. The aim of this chapter is to show that the empirical works of historians have to take into account the well-known financial theories, in order to strike a relevant balance within their academic research thanks to a useful confrontation between the academic fields.
