Abstract

The article discusses the diary of a 19th century French textile manufacturer Jules-Émile Scrive, focusing on how he managed his finances and investment portfolio in a period when the textile industry was in decline in northern France. In the last two decades of the 19th century Scrive was earning more from his investments than from his manufacturing. Topics discussed include an inquiry into what class of investor one could place Scrive in, the relative diversification or specialization of his portfolio, what kind of risks he was taking, and what returns he was seeing on those risks.
