Salad vegetables are essential part of people’s diet all around the world. They are usually consumed raw and often without heat treatment or thorough washing; hence have been known to serve as vehicles for the transmission of pathogenic microorganism associated with human diseases. Fresh samples of lettuce, carrot and cucumber collected from different markets and vendors in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria were evaluated for bacterial loads using spread plate agar dilution method. Bacterial loads ranged from 1.6 x 106 to 2.9 x 108 cfu/g. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Enterobacter were amongst the coliforms (lactose fermenters), while Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella and Shigella were non-lactose fermenters associated with the samples. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from majority of the samples.

- Abstract
The original version of this Article omitted from the author list the 212th author Patrizia Mecocci, who is from the Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy. Consequently, the “Sample Contribution” section of Author Contributions was updated to add “P.M” between “P.D.” and “R.C.”. Additionally, the original version of this Article contained the incorrect affiliation for author Patrick Gavin Kehoe, which incorrectly read “German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Berlin, Germany”. The correct version replaces this affiliation with “Bristol Medical School (THS), University of Bristol, Southmead Hospital, Bristol, UK”. This has been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.

We compare rain event size distributions derived from measurements in climatically different regions, which we find to be well approximated by power laws of similar exponents over broad ranges. Differences can be seen in the large-scale cutoffs of the distributions. Event duration distributions suggest that the scale-free aspects are related to the absence of characteristic scales in the meteorological mesoscale., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Influx of substandard drugs as reported by the drug regulatory agency in Nigeria has necessitated the need to assess the quality of frequently used drugs of which metronidazole infusion is not exempted. Metronidazole infusion is mostly prescribed for pre and post-operative surgery to prevent infections from developing. This study was carried out to assess the quality of six commercial brands of metronidazole infusions sold in Abuja, Nigeria. Six brands of metronidazole infusions were randomly purchased from some Pharmacy stores in Abuja for chemical and microbiological assays. Five (83.3%) of the samples had percentage contents ranging from 95-110% which is within BP specification. The pH values of the whole samples were within BP specification of 4.5 to 6.0 which range from 4.9 to 5.8. The result of the microbiological analysis indicated zero colony forming unit (cfu) from all the samples, this is in conformity with official specification for parenteral formulations. Similarly, all the brands passed pyrogen test. Based on the percentage content result, five brands of the samples analyzed have been found to be fit for human use while one failed.

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. Aim To investigate clinical results of root canal treatment performed with the aid of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments. Summary A total of 179 patients underwent root canal treatment with either (A) Lightspeed, or (B) ProFile .04 or (C) ProFile .04 and .06 or GT rotary instruments to create tapered preparations. In groups A and B, laterally condensed gutta-percha and AH Plus were used. Canals in group C were obturated with System B, Obtura II and Roth's 801 sealer. Initial and recall radiographs were assessed using the periapical index (PAI). Outcomes were analysed using chi-square tests, event-time analyses and logistic regression models. Two hundred and thirty-three teeth were radiographically assessed after a mean interval of 25.4+/-11.8 months. Favourable outcome of treatment, defined as PAI86.7%. Logistic regression analysis and univariate analyses indicated that teeth with preoperative PAI scores >2 and retreated teeth had a significantly lower chance of healing compared with periapically healthy teeth and primary treatments, respectively. Preparation technique, length of fill and the type of sealer did not significantly affect healing rates. Key learning points Root canal treatment with NiTi root canal instrumentation systems renders favourable outcomes in more than 86% of the cases. Outcome is significantly affected by preoperative diagnoses but not by the specific choice of instrumentation system.

cyclic fatigue ,FlexMaster ,force ,torque - Abstract
Aim To investigate physical parameters of FlexMaster nickel-titanium instruments while preparing curved canals in maxillary molars in vitro. Methodology A torque-testing platform was used to prepare root canals in 11 extracted human maxillary molars with FlexMaster rotary instruments. Peak torque and force was registered along with numbers of rotations required to shape the canals. Canals were divided into 'wide' and 'constricted' groups depending on canal volumes assessed by microcomputed tomography. Resistance to cyclic fatigue was also tested. Mean scores for each instrument type were calculated and statistically compared using ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc tests. Results Mean torque varied between 0.1 +/- 0.1 and 0.8 +/- 0.5 N cm while mean force ranged from 4.2 +/- 2.0 to 7.3 +/- 3.5 N. Mean numbers of rotations totalled up to 18. All three variables registered showed weak correlations to preoperative canal volumes (P < 0.01) and differed significantly between 'wide' and 'constricted' canals (P < 0.001). Numbers of rotations to fracture in a cyclic fatigue test were between 348 and 1362. Conclusion FlexMaster instruments generated low torque scores and were highly resistant to cyclic fatigue, whilst three instruments fractured in extremely narrow canals. Consequently, more research is required to limit fracture incidence and to optimize instrumentation guidelines.

Aim To evaluate the relative performance of FlexMaster nickel-titanium instruments shaping maxillary molar root canals in vitro. Methodology Extracted human maxillary molars were scanned, before and after root-canal shaping, with FlexMaster, employing micro-computed tomography (muCT) at a resolution of 36 mum. Canals were three-dimensionally reconstructed and evaluated for volume, surface area, 'thickness' (diameter), canal transportation and prepared surface. Based on median canal volume, the canals were divided into 'wide' and 'constricted' groups. Comparisons were made between mesiobuccal (mb), distobuccal (db) and palatal (p), as well as 'wide' and 'constricted' canals, using ANOVA and Scheffe post-hoc tests. Results Volume and surface area increased significantly and similarly in mb, db and p canals, and no gross preparation errors were found. Mean root-canal diameters, 5 mm coronal to the apex, increased from 0.45 to 0.65 mm, from 0.41 to 0.56 mm and from 0.79 to 0.85 mm for mb, db and p canals, respectively. Apical canal transportation ranged from 0.01 to 0.29 mm and was independent of canal type; 'wide' canals had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) proportion of unprepared surfaces than 'constricted' canals had. Conclusions FlexMaster instruments shaped curved and narrow root canals in maxillary molars to sizes 40 and 45 without significant shaping errors. Canal anatomy had an insignificant impact on preparation, indicating that FlexMaster instruments were able to shape 'constricted' canals as well as 'wide' ones.

Aim This paper describes the initial experiences following the introduction of a rotary engine-driven preparation technique into the undergraduate endodontic programme at the Zurich University Dental Centre. Methods Forty third-year students practised the ProFile .04 (PF .04) technique between January and July 2001 in a preclinical course. Between November 2001 and February 2002, 20 of these students (Group A) root-treated 51 teeth in their clinical course using either PF .04, the balanced force technique (BFT) or a combination of both. The second group of 20 students (Group B) similarly treated another 36 randomly selected teeth between April and July 2002. Types of teeth treated by the students and the canal preparation techniques were recorded. The students also completed a short questionnaire, evaluating their opinions of the new course. Results Of the 87 teeth endodontically treated during the clinical course, 34, 14 and 39 were shaped using PF .04 alone, a combination of PF .04 and BFT and BFT alone, respectively. No rotary instruments were fractured during the 1-year clinical course, although some instruments were fractured during the preclinical laboratory course. Overall, the students rated the rotary technique as positive. Conclusion A rotary technique was successfully introduced into an undergraduate endodontic programme (this will be continued in the foreseeable future). However, the continuity between the preclinical and the clinical courses was poor as a result of the constraints of the general teaching programme.

canal geometry ,ProTaper ,shape ,transportation - Abstract
Aim To evaluate the relative performance of ProTaper nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) instruments shaping root canals of varying preoperative canal geometry. Methodology Extracted human maxillary molars were scanned, before and after shaping with ProTaper, employing micro computed tomography (muCT) at a resolution of 36 mum. Canals were three-dimensionally reconstructed and evaluated for volume, surface area, 'thickness' (diameter), canal transportation and prepared surface. Based on median canal volume, canals were divided into 'wide' and 'constricted' groups. Comparisons were made between mesiobuccal (mb), distobuccal (db) and palatal (p), as well as 'wide' and 'constricted' canals, using repeated-measures anova and Scheffe posthoc tests. Results Volume and surface area increased significantly and similarly in mb, db and p canals, and gross preparation errors were found infrequently. Root canal diameters, 5-mm coronal to the apex, increased from 0.38 to 0.65 mm, 0.42 to 0.66 mm and 0.57 to 0.79 mm for mb, db and p canals, respectively. Apical canal transportation ranged from 0.02 to 0.40 mm and was independent of canal type; 'wide' canals had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) proportion of unprepared surfaces than 'constricted' canals. Conclusions Canals in maxillary molars were prepared in vitro using ProTaper instruments without major procedural errors. These instruments may be more effective in shaping narrow canals than wider, immature ones.

- Abstract
Importance: An estimated 40% of dementia is potentially preventable by modifying 12 risk factors throughout the life course. However, robust evidence for most of these risk factors is lacking. Effective interventions should target risk factors in the causal pathway to dementia. Objective: To comprehensively disentangle potentially causal aspects of modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer disease (AD) to inspire new drug targeting and improved prevention. Design, Setting, and Participants: This genetic association study was conducted using 2-sample univariable and multivariable mendelian randomization. Independent genetic variants associated with modifiable risk factors were selected as instrumental variables from genomic consortia. Outcome data for AD were obtained from the European Alzheimer & Dementia Biobank (EADB), generated on August 31, 2021. Main analyses were conducted using the EADB clinically diagnosed end point data. All analyses were performed between April 12 and October 27, 2022. Exposures: Genetically determined modifiable risk factors. Main Outcomes and Measures: Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for AD were calculated per 1-unit change of genetically determined risk factors. Results: The EADB-diagnosed cohort included 39106 participants with clinically diagnosed AD and 401577 control participants without AD. The mean age ranged from 72 to 83 years for participants with AD and 51 to 80 years for control participants. Among participants with AD, 54% to 75% were female, and among control participants, 48% to 60% were female. Genetically determined high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations were associated with increased odds of AD (OR per 1-SD increase, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.05-1.16]). Genetically determined high systolic blood pressure was associated with increased risk of AD after adjusting for diastolic blood pressure (OR per 10-mm Hg increase, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.02-1.46]). In a second analysis to minimize bias due to sample overlap, the entire

Background: Invasive candidiasis has been recognized as a major cause of mortality and morbidity in hospital settings across the globe. Aside from C. albicans, other Candida species (C. glabarata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis) associated with invasive candidiasis have been reported as a public health challenge. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activities of extracts of some indigenous plants using the agar disc diffusion method. Methods: Fresh samples of the plant parts were collected, identified, air dried, pulverized and extracted using standard methods. The extracts were screened against clinical isolates of C. albicans, C. glabarata, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis using agar disc diffusion method. Results: All plant extracts exhibited varying inhibition zones ranging from 8.0 - 24.0 mm against the tested isolates. Fractions of Acalypha wilkesiana Macrophylla (AWRF5) showed the lowest activities against all the test isolates with zones of inhibition ranging from 10.0-13.0 mm while AWRF6 fraction of the same plant demonstrated highest antifungal activities against all the test isolates with zones of inhibition ranging from 14.0-24 mm followed by fractions of Acalypha wilkesiana Hoffmanii (AWGF6), which demonstrated high (14.0 - 20.0 mm) antifungal activities. Conclusion: The Plants understudied possessed antifungal potentials and can serve as lead in the development of phytomedicines to combat candidiasis decrease medical as well as financial burden, hence improving the management of cirrhotic patients. These predictors, however, need further work to validate reliability.

The fertility of this soil could be improved by the application of liquid organic fertilizer such as banana kepok skin waste that contains some nutrient such as organic N, P, K, and C that can be a nutrient source for plant growth. Moreover, the quality of banana kepok skin could be improved by the application AHL active powder. The AHL could improve the development of soil microorganisms resulted in increasing soil nutrient content. The main aim of the research was to determine the best effect of liquid organic fertilizer based on the waste of banana kepok skin to improve total Nitrogen content, and Phosphor availability in the soil. The research was designed in a Completed Block Design with three replications. The treatments were applying the concentration of liquid fertilizer at 0%, 50% and 75%, and at the dosage of AHL 0.01g/2ml per polybag and 0.02g/2ml per polybag. All data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test. Parameters measured were the colony forming unit of soil microflora, the total Nitrogen content and the availability of Phosphor. Result showed that the application 75 % of liquid organic fertilizer based on waste of banana kepok skin and at concentration of 0.02 g/ 2ml AHL had a significantl effect on the number of colony forming of soil microflora, the total Nitrogen content and availability of Phosphor.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of roselle (Hibiscus sabdraiffa LINN) calyx extract on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality attributes of broiler chickens. Five hundred and seventy-six Abor acre plus day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned into six treatments with eight replicates of twelve birds each. The birds were fed daily with a basal diet and Roselle calyx extract was administered orally to the birds through drinking water for six weeks except for the controls. Treatment 1 had birds administered water only (negative control), treatments 2, 3, 4 and 5 were administered roselle calyx extract at 2000, 4000, 6000 and 8000 mg/L of drinking water and treatment 6 were on antibiotic growth promoter containing antioxidant which was administered at 2000mg/L of drinking water (positive control). Data were collected on growth performance, carcass characteristics, ileum histomorphometry, pH and microbial load count of the meat at days 0, 7 and 14. Results showed that fluid intake was not influenced by increasing roselle calyx extract levels at both the starter and finisher phases, however, feed conversion ratio (1.99) was improved at 8000mg/L roselle calyx extract inclusion. Optimal villus height:crypt depth (8.16) was obtained at 6000 mg/L. Percent crude protein of meat from broiler chickens administered 4000mg/L roselle calyx extract were significantly (P<0.05) higher (19.98%) than other treatments means. pH values on days 0 and 7 were not significantly affected by the oral administration of roselle calyx extract, however, the pH value at day 14 of broiler chickens administered roselle calyx extract were significantly increased compared to those administered water only. It was therefore concluded that oral administration of roselle calyx extract up to 8000mg/L in drinking water of broiler chickens, improved feed utilisation and did not show any negative effects in carcass characteristics and quality in terms of pH and microbial load count of the product. Globally, coastal areas are under stress due to increasing human population, industrial activities and indiscriminate discharge of untreated wastes. Some of these wastes are toxic and persist and could consequently compromise the integrity of the aquatic ecosystem. However, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of water pollution in four coastal towns located in Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State, Nigeria. The study areas are Obi, IdiEgbin, Okesiri and Araromi waters with three sampling points per location. Water samples were collected in triplicate for physical, chemical and microbial analysis. At p<0.05, the total mean concentration of pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Salinity, Turbidity, Colour, Total Dissolved Solid, Conductivity, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Sulphate, Chloride, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium and Chemical Oxygen Demand showed a significant variation at Obi, Idi-Egbin, Okesiri and Araromi but no significant variation was recorded in Biological Oxygen Demand, Ammonia, Total Suspended Solid, Bicarbonate and Carbonate among the sampling locations. The mean of total microbial load in water samples were reported as; Obi (50.72±21.83 x10³ cfu/g), Idi-Egbin (61.72±29.02 x10³ cfu/g), Okesiri (62.68±28.90 x10³ cfu/g) and Araromi (64.01±17.87 x10³ cfu/g). Ten bacteria species were identified, as well as their occurrences. They comprise both Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The present study therefore reveals the dangers associated with the health status of the Coastal water of Ondo State which may further deteriorate and become detrimental to the health of inhabitants of these coastal communities. This study investigated the Credit-to-GDP Gap as an Early Warning Indicator (EWI) of banking/systemic crisis in Nigeria. Annual data on domestic credit to the private sector as a ratio of gross domestic product for the period 1981 to 2019 was used. The credit-to-GDP gap was calculated using the one-sided Hodrick-Prescott filter with Lamda set at 1600. The performance was analyzed using a couple of interrelated methods - the signal approach and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AU-ROC) curve as well as graphical analysis for visualization. The results indicate that Credit-to-GDP Gap performs poorly in Nigeria with an area under the receiver operating characteristic (AU-ROC) curve of 63.68%. Further, this study shows that the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision’s (BCBS) recommendation that the prudential authorities set lower thresholds (L) at 2% above trend may not work for Nigeria as this study suggests an optimal threshold of 0.98%. This result emphasizes the need for prudential authorities to employ informed judgement in setting thresholds with a view to activating the countercyclical capital buffer on time before crisis occurs.

- Abstract
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele. © 2022. The Author(s).
