Individuals high in tolerance of ambiguity (TOA) are comfortable with, desire, and strive to manage ambiguous situations. We predicted leader TOA would be associated with better follower performance outcomes, depending on the level (Study 1) and nature (Study 2) of follower role ambiguity. Data were collected from employees (Study 1, n = 423) and managerial employees (Study 2, n = 326) who rated their leader on three facets of TOA and provided self-reports of their own performance outcomes. Positive implications of leader TOA for follower learning goal orientation and job performance (Study 1) were most pronounced when followers perceived low role ambiguity and, in the prediction of situational coping (Study 2), when ambiguous work situations were categorized as challenges (unexpected events requiring problem-solving) compared to hindrances. Findings have theoretical implications for understanding when TOA in leaders is optimal and have practical relevance for leaders seeking to adapt to the situational needs of their followers.

PurposeUsing the frameworks of social exchange theory (SET) and conservation of resources (COR) Theory, this study examined the influence of servant leadership on employees' performance through the social exchange indicator (trust), and how perceived organizational politics (POP) influences these relationships.Design/methodology/approachSurvey data were collected from 236 supervisor/subordinate dyads in a public sector organization in Pakistan. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were used to test the study hypotheses.FindingsServant leadership was found to positively influence employees' task performance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Further, analysis revealed that trust in leader partially mediated the positive relationship between servant leadership and subordinates' task performance and OCBs. However, although POP moderated the indirect relationship between servant leadership and subordinates' task performance, it did not moderate the indirect relationships between servant leadership and OCBs.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies to be conducted in the South Asian context, testing the relationship between servant leadership and employee performance through the social exchange indicator (trust) in a political organizational environment. Theoretical contributions, practical implications, study limitations and future research directions are discussed at the end of the study.

This article examines why consumers choose to research their ancestry using commercial available products. Prior research suggests this is a voyage of personal discovery. We take this voyage and review consumer interest in ancestral products (e.g., DNA services) that is driven by a consumer’s uncertainty about their sense of self. Focusing on uncertainty-identity theory, the findings from a study with a sample of adult Australian consumers show that people who want to reduce uncertainty about their sense of self respond favourably to a genealogical product that offers insight into a person’s ancestry. Finding support the proposition that the need for closure moderates this effect. Consumers who are high in need for closure respond to self-uncertainty through an interest in commercial genealogical products. The study results show that curiosity underlies the effects in several ways; the desire to gain new knowledge about self, a curiosity to understand the past and the desire to reduce self uncertainty about the past. Research implications for the study of consumer self-identity and uncertainty are presented, how consumers respond to this through the use of genealogical products examined. Managerial implications for the marketing of genealogical products are discussed, and recommendations for future research made.

What kind of surveillance of employees is evident today? The rights of employers to police and act punitively with regard to workplace dissent and misbehaviour have become contentious legal, policy and ethical issues. Drawing on survey responses from employees in the UK and Australia, this study investigates the scope and scale of employee dissent in relation to critical online comments and the private use of social media during work time. The findings reveal a sufficient pool of misbehaviours, albeit that they are emergent and uneven. Also evident were some apparently contradictory responses with respect to employer rights to profile and discipline, at the same time as asserting employee rights to voice and private online identities. The findings contribute to knowledge of how much and what kinds of online dissent exist in the ambiguous space between the public sphere of work and the private lives of individual employees and what employers do about it.

This research examined the relationship between different measures of narcissism and a range of consumption behaviors. Measures of individual, communal, and collective narcissism were correlated with three sets of consumption behaviors termed vanity, self-improvement, and prosocial consumption behavior. Based on a sample of 552 MTurk users, it was found that all narcissism measures were positively associated with vanity behaviors. However, differences amongst narcissism measures emerged for self-improvement behaviors and prosocial behaviors. The admiration scale of the NARQ was positively associated with self-improvement and prosocial behaviors, whereas the rivalry scale of the NARQ was negatively associated with prosocial behaviors. The communal and collective narcissism scales were also positively associated with prosocial consumption behaviors. The results contribute to the narcissism literature by showing (1) which narcissism measures are most strongly related to consumption behaviors (2) that certain measures of narcissism are positively associated with some prosocial consumption behaviors, and (3) that individual, communal and collective narcissism are not strongly correlated with each other.

Recent studies have documented a shift from moderate political attitudes to more extreme attitudes at the ends of the political spectrum. This can be seen in Political Correctness (PC) on the left, and white identitarian (WI) attitudes on the 'Alt-Right' (AR). While highly covered in mainstream media, limited academic research has investigated their possible antecedents and psychological correlates. The current study investigated the prevalence and psychological predictors of these attitudes. Utilising a quota-based sample of 512 U.S. participants, we found that extreme political attitudes were associated with various personality traits, social media use, and upbringing. PC attitudes were associated with agreeableness, black-white thinking, social-media use, and perceived overprotective parenting. WI attitudes were associated with low agreeableness and openness, and high black-white thinking. Our results show that extreme left and right attitudes are separated by individual differences, and that authoritarianism can be seen on both the left and the right.

In this study we investigated whether the big five traits and narcissism are associated with consumer preferences for different car features. Using a representative sample of 1000 Australian consumers, we determined the factor structure of a wide range of automobile preferences before exploring their associations with a set of demographic variables, the big five traits (and their facets), and trait narcissism. We found that consumer car preferences reflect two high order dimensions of ‘style and performance’ (7 sub-factors) and ‘safety and practicality’ (4 sub-factors) and that numerous demographic variables and personality traits had small to moderate linear relationships with multiple dimensions of automobile preferences. Broadly consistent with a set of hypotheses based on life history theory, we found that consumers who are young, extraverted, and narcissistic tend to value style and performance in automobiles, whereas consumers who are older, agreeable, and conscientious tended to value safety and practicality. While no overt effects of openness were found, different openness facets were associated positively and negatively with style and performance.

Purpose This paper aims to examine how a shopper’s level of psychological entitlement influences how consumers respond to different types of apology by a service provider. Design/methodology/approach Two experiments were performed. Study 1 tests the hypotheses that entitled shoppers prefer empathy apologies to norm violation apologies and that this effect is mediated by disgust and anger. Study 2 tests whether relative superiority apologies are more effective. Findings Study 1 shows that entitled shoppers prefer empathy apologies. Mediation analysis shows that entitled people feel disgust for norm violation apologies. Study 2 shows that entitled shoppers prefer relative superiority apologies. A standard apology results in negative perceptions of interactional justice, disgust and negative employee evaluations. Research limitations/implications Limitations include the scenario method. Implications include entitlement as a moderator of service recovery effectiveness, examining different types of apology and mediators which contribute to the marketing and entitlement literature. Practical implications The findings have implications for training employees in service recovery. Employees should not use a standard apology or an apology that treats entitled consumers as similar to other shoppers. Employees should express empathy or make them feel that they are a more valued customer than other store customers. Originality/value This research shows how entitlement moderates consumer responses to service recovery. The research answers calls to study different types of apology rather than studying a standard apology (vs no apology). The research is the first to relate entitlement to apologies and to show how disgust and justice perceptions underlie an entitled person’s judgments in service recovery.

Objective To determine whether the harmful effects of abandonment schema on marital quality can be attributed to low trait emotional intelligence in a sample of Iranian couples. Background Research has demonstrated that maladaptive schemas are related to various indicators of marital quality; however, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these relationships. In this study, we use maladaptive schema theory to propose that the harmful effects of abandonment schema on marital quality can be attributed to low trait emotional intelligence. Method Data were collected from a sample of 123 married couples from Iran. Participants completed a series of questionnaires designed to measure maladaptive schemas, trait emotional intelligence, and marital quality. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the hypothesized indirect effect. Results Results indicate that abandonment schema is negatively associated with several indicators of marital quality via the mediating effects of trait emotional intelligence. Conclusion We conclude that trait emotional intelligence can account for the negative relationships between abandonment schema and spousal ratings of marital satisfaction, communication satisfaction, and conflict resolution satisfaction in a sample of Iranian couples. Implications Couple therapists should consider emotion‐focused techniques when treating couples where one or both partners present with abandonment schema.

Introverts are less likely to emerge as leaders than extraverts, however the existing literature provides little explanation as to why. To investigate the potential cause of this trait-based difference in emergent leadership, we measured trait extraversion in a sample of 184 business students and studied their leadership-related behavior in an unstructured group task. We drew from a model of forecasted affect to hypothesize that introverts would be less likely to emerge as leaders based on their belief that engaging in the necessary extraverted behavior would be unpleasant/unenjoyable (i.e. they would forecast higher levels of negative affect compared to extraverts). Consistent with this, we found that introverts were less likely to emerge as leaders, and that forecasted negative affect fully accounted for the relationship between extraversion and peer-rated emergent leadership. We therefore argue that introverts fail to emerge as leaders as often as extraverts because they engage in higher levels of forecasted negative affect and that these forecasts impede their emergent leadership potential.

The current study investigated whether manipulating participants’ pre-exposure to reward and punishment affects the extent to which sensation seeking and values predict risk-taking behavior. Participants (n = 195) were randomly allocated to one of two conditions, defined by the order at which they were rewarded or punished for risk-taking behavior. Risk-taking behavior was measured in both conditions using the Balloon Analogue Risk Test, but it was set up such that participants in Group 1 were rewarded for risk-taking behavior before being punished, whereas participants in Group 2 were punished for risk-taking behavior before being rewarded. Participants also completed questionnaires designed to measure sensation seeking and the values of stimulation (the need for novelty and excitement) and hedonism (the need for sensuous pleasure). It was found that stimulation predicted risk-taking behavior in the reward-then-punishment condition, whereas hedonism predicted risk-taking behavior in the punishment-then-reward condition. Sensation seeking was found to be an indirect predictor of risk-taking behavior in both conditions. It is tentatively concluded that the extent to which participants’ risk-taking behavior is guided by their values (hedonism, stimulation) largely depends on their prior exposure to the order of contingent reward and punishment.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of existing psychological interventions on the social adjustment of young refugees. From 51 peer-reviewed articles identified in the literature, 11 studies with 25 therapeutic effect sizes met criteria for inclusion (N = 1,736). Hedges’ g was used to measure effect sizes and a random-effects model was conducted. The number of sessions and participant age were considered as potential moderator variables in moderator analyses through meta-regression. The effect sizes of the included studies were compared based on the type of intervention. The results showed that the aggregated effect size for all included interventions was significant, computed as g = 0.14, p < 0.01, 95% confidence interval [0.06, 0.21]. The effect size is considered small, based on Cohen's (1992) guidelines. The results of the meta-regression showed that the effectiveness of the included psychological interventions on social adjustment was not moderated by either the number of sessions (b = 0.006 p = 0.35) or age (b = –0.008, p = 0.59). Furthermore, there were no significant differences between different therapeutic approaches (Q = 7.37, df (Q) = 6; p = 0.28). This meta-analysis demonstrates that mental-health interventions in young refugees mildly improve their social adjustment. Due to the importance of social adjustment in refugees, we suggest that existing interventions place greater specific focus on improving social adjustment. The details of implications for future studies are discussed.

Extraverts are more likely than introverts to emerge as leaders, however little is known about the explicit behaviours that cause such an advantage and what introverts can do to overcome their relative disadvantage. Utilising an experiment (n = 601) in a group context, we assessed the effects of manipulating state extraversion on peer-rated emergent leadership, self-rated emergent leadership, and post-activity affect. Participants completed a big five personality measure and were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a control condition, an ‘act extraverted’ treatment, or an ‘act introverted’ treatment. Results confirmed extraverts' emergent leadership advantage but demonstrated that state extraversion was the proximal cause of emergent leadership, with both extraverts and introverts emerging as leaders when instructed to act extraverted. Acting introverted i) had a particularly deleterious effect on self-rated emergent leadership regardless of trait extraversion, ii) caused a reduction in positive affect for ambiverts and extraverts but not for introverts, and iii) caused an increase in negative affect for ambiverts and extraverts but not for introverts.

Ambush marketing is a contentious practice whereby brands communicate an association with an event without being an official sponsor. Those involved in sponsorship commonly try to limit it by restricting ambusher activity in event contexts. We introduce theoretical ideas around distinctiveness to explain that sponsors may actually fare better in terms of awareness outcomes when ambushers are present in the event context, if they strategically use ambusher presence to highlight their own distinctive sponsor status. Across two experiments we show that sponsor distinctiveness can be achieved by communicating sponsorship exclusivity in ambusher presence, and by facilitating juxtaposition of sponsor and ambusher messages. Results include increased recall to sponsor cues, and reduced recall to ambusher cues. The findings suggest ambusher restrictions may sometimes be counter-productive.

Purpose Despite the abundant literature on organizational change management, the success of change initiatives in organizations remains low. In this study, we investigate employee support for change in the context of two change management practices (information and participation). We use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine why these change management practices foster employee support, and the extent to which the efficacy of these practices depends on current job demands. Design/Methodology/Approach Participants were 106 employees undergoing a building relocation at their place of employment who responded to an initial questionnaire at Time 1 (pre-occupancy) and a follow-up questionnaire two months later (post-occupancy). Findings We found that the TPB variables mediated the effects of information and participation on employee support (both intentions at Time 1 and self-reported behaviors at Time 2). The indirect relationships from information and participation to employee support were significant at low and medium, but not at high, levels of job demands. Implications The positive effects of information and participation on employee support can be largely attributed to employee attitudes and subjective norms. Thus, consultants should target employee attitudes and norms when garnering employee support, but also be aware of the limitations of these practices when employees are preoccupied with their work. Originality/Value This study demonstrates that the TPB can account for the beneficial effects of change management practices on employee support. It also reports the novel finding that change management practices are less effective at high levels of job demands.

Workplace deviance represents voluntary and intentional behavior that is harmful to organizations. In the current study, we examine workplace deviance using the Hybrid Model of Learning in Personality (HMLP), which has previously been shown to predict dysfunctional behavior in the workplace. Using a sample of part-time workers, we investigated whether dimensions of Rationality and Sensation-Seeking predict workplace deviance, when controlling for known predictors from the Big Five. More interestingly, we also assessed whether the effects of Sensation-Seeking and Deep Learning on workplace deviance depend on how constrained employees feel in their current position. Overall, our results indicate the unique importance of Rationality in the prediction of Interpersonal Deviance, and Sensation-Seeking and Deep Learning in the prediction of Organizational Deviance. In particular, we found that in highly constrained workplaces, Sensation Seekers tend to engage in deviant behavior when they have low levels of Deep Learning, but tend not to engage in deviant behavior when they have high levels of Deep Learning. Results are consistent with the HMLP and have implications for the management of deviant behavior in the workplace.

Across two studies, we investigated individual differences in the tendency to cut corners at work, and assessed whether a range of personality traits predict this behavior. In two independent samples of Australians (N=533) and Americans (N=589), we examined individual differences in cutting corners at work and tested sex differences and the surrounding nomological network of cutting corners. Collectively, we found that men were more likely than women were to cut corners at work, which was fully a function of individual differences in psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and conscientious. Various personality traits accounted for individual differences in the tendency to cut corners at work, indicating that individuals with this tendency may be morally compromised, selfish, impulsive, and not forward-thinking. Results were generally unaffected by contextual factors, such as the hypothetical risks and rewards associated with cutting corners. In our discussion,we focus on the deleterious consequences of cutting corners and the importance of selection and Human Resource practices that address the potential fallout from having such people in the workplace.

Over the last 40 years or more the personality literature has been dominated by trait models based on the Big Five (B5). Trait-based models describe personality at the between-person level but cannot explain the within-person mental mechanisms responsible for personality. Nor can they adequately account for variations in emotion and behavior experienced by individuals across different situations and over time. An alternative, yet understated, approach to personality architecture can be found in neurobiological theories of personality, most notably reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST). In contrast to static trait-based personality models like the B5, RST provides a more plausible basis for a personality process model, namely, one that explains how emotions and behavior arise from the dynamic interaction between contextual factors and within-person mental mechanisms. In this article, the authors review the evolution of a neurobiologically based personality process model based on RST, the response modulation model and the context-appropriate balanced attention model. They argue that by integrating this complex literature, and by incorporating evidence from personality neuroscience, one can meaningfully explain personality at both the within- and between-person levels. This approach achieves a domain-general architecture based on RST and self-regulation that can be used to align within-person mental mechanisms, neurobiological systems and between-person measurement models. In this study, we investigated the validity of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF; Petrides, 2009) in the context of task-induced stress. We used a total sample of 225 volunteers to investigate (a) the incremental validity of the TEIQue-SF over other predictors of coping with task-induced stress, and (b) the construct validity of the TEIQue-SF by examining the mechanisms via which scores from the TEIQue-SF predict coping outcomes. Results demonstrated that the TEIQue-SF possessed incremental validity over the Big Five personality traits in the prediction of emotion-focused coping. Results also provided support for the construct validity of the TEIQue-SF by demonstrating that this measure predicted adaptive coping via emotion-focused channels. Specifically, results showed that, following a task stressor, the TEIQue-SF predicted low negative affect and high task performance via high levels of emotion-focused coping. Consistent with the purported theoretical nature of the trait emotional intelligence (EI) construct, trait EI as assessed by the TEIQue-SF primarily enhances affect and performance in stressful situations by regulating negative emotions.

We examined the role of personality in accounting for sex differences in yearly earnings among Australians (N = 533). Men reported they earned modestly more money than women did, as did married and fully employed people, but these three factors did not interact. Narcissism, psychopathy, extraversion, conscientiousness, and limited neuroticism predicted self-reported higher earnings; associations that differed little by participant's sex, although a slight pattern suggests women may pay a higher pay penalty for neuroticism but benefit more from conscientiousness than men do. Narcissism and neuroticism mediated sex differences in self-reported income suggesting men who were more narcissistic and women who were less neurotic reported more yearly earnings. The results are discussed in terms of how individual differences may play a role in apparent sex differences in earnings.

It is well established that mainstream personality traits are associated with moderate, traditional political attitudes. However, very little is known regarding trait predictors of extreme political attitudes. In the current study (N = 511 U.S. residents), we examined the relationships between the Dark Triad traits, Entitlement and three extreme political attitudes that are highly covered in mainstream media: White Identitarianism (‘Alt-Right’), Political Correctness-Authoritarianism, and Political Correctness-Liberalism. We found that Dark Triad traits and Entitlement had incremental validity in the prediction of these 3 attitudes over demographic factors. The Dark Triad traits and Entitlement explained a substantial portion of variance in White Identitarianism and Political Correctness-Authoritarianism, and only a small portion of variance in Political Correctness-Liberalism. Across all attitudes, Psychopathy and Entitlement were the most consistent, strongest predictors. Results indicate that, from a Dark Triad perspective, Authoritarian PC advocates have more in common with extreme right advocates than those holding PC views related to compassion., Psychology; Applied Psychology; Individual Differences; Personality Assessment; Political Behavior; political correctness, dark triad, alt right, extremism, political attitudes, entitlement.

This study compared the short-term effectiveness of two creativity training programs (ideational skills vs relaxation), and assessed whether training effectiveness in each program was dependent on participant personality. Participants comprised 163 volunteers who were allocated to one of three experimental conditions (ideation training, relaxation training, and no training control). All participants completed several self-report questionnaires, as well as tests of creative performance both before and after training. Consistent with previous research, results indicated that Extraversion and Openness were predictors of creative performance overall. More interestingly, however, results revealed a three-way interaction between Extraversion (introverts vs. extraverts), training type (ideation skills training vs. relaxation training), and time (pre- vs. post-training), suggesting that relaxation training is particularly beneficial for introverts whereas ideation skills training is more effective for extraverts. Our results offer new evidence that the expected utility of creativity training program-types may vary according the personality of trainees. On a practical note, our research has implications for organizations looking to tailor creativity-training programs in order to maximize the benefit of such programs on individual performance.

Aim To investigate the efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for postoperative pain management in adolescents. Background Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an inexpensive, non-pharmacological intervention that has successfully been used to treat chronic pain. It holds promise in the treatment of acute, postsurgical pain based on its purported effects on the brain and nervous system. Design A randomized controlled trial was used. Methods Fifty-six adolescent surgical patients aged between 12-18 years were allocated to gender-balanced Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (treatment) or non-Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (control) groups. Pain was measured using the Wong-Baker FACES® Pain Rating Scale (WBFS) before and after the intervention (or non-intervention for the control group). Findings A Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrated that the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing group experienced a significant reduction in pain intensity after treatment intervention, whereas the control group did not. Additionally, a Mann–Whitney U-test showed that, while there was no significant difference between the two groups at time 1, there was a significant difference in pain intensity between the two groups at time 2, with the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing group experiencing lower levels of pain. Conclusion These results suggest that Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing may be an effective treatment modality for postoperative pain.

This paper studies the motivations and personality traits of retro-tech adopters. From a survey conducted on Amazon Mechanical Turk with 466 respondents, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis to establish motivational factors, and then ran a correlation analysis to determine the relationships between these motivations and the facet-level traits of the BFI-2 model. Our findings indicate that retro-tech consumers are not a homogenous adopter category, as individuals are affected by different motivations — aesthetic, fashionability, nostalgic positive emotionality, non-conformism and quality. Our study additionally suggests a cyclical conceptualisation of the diffusion of innovations model, or its extension to include a new group of retro-adopters.

Objective. Personality traits influence human behaviour across a broad range of situations and are consequently relevant to many theoretical and applied disciplines. In this perspective piece, we provide an overview of the logic underpinning personality measurement and review major personality taxonomies. We provide an extensive set of recommendations for researchers and practitioners on when and how to use measures of personality traits. Method. We overview a range of taxonomic representations of personality structure focusing particularly on hierarchical representations and five and six factor models such as the Big Five and HEXACO models. We review the various strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Results. The review outlines the major reasons for the dominance of the Big Five model, and suggests it is a good descriptive framework for studying personality in general. However we suggest that researchers and practitioners also consider alternative taxonomic personality representations such as the HEXACO. We provide a range of scenarios whereby alternative frameworks will be more appropriate than the Big Five and offer recommendations both for choosing measures in general and for implementing studies examining personality facets. Conclusions. Whilst the Big Five represents an excellent general personality framework that is appropriate across multiple situations, researchers and practitioners should be aware of alternative measures and utilise them where appropriate.

In this paper we focus specifically on explaining variation in core human values, and suggest that individual differences in values can be partially explained by personality traits and the perceived ability to manage emotions in the self and others (i.e. trait emotional intelligence). A sample of 209 university students was used to test hypotheses regarding several proposed direct and indirect relationships between personality traits, trait emotional intelligence and values. Consistent with the hypotheses, Harm Avoidance and Novelty Seeking were found to directly predict Hedonism, Conformity, and Stimulation. Harm Avoidance was also found to indirectly predict these values through the mediating effects of key subscales of trait emotional intelligence. Novelty Seeking was not found to be an indirect predictor of values. Results have implications for our understanding of the relationship between personality, trait emotional intelligence and values, and suggest a common basis in terms of approach and avoidance pathways.

The World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF) is predicated on a multidimensional perspective on quality of life (QOL); yet studies are unclear about the latent structure underlying responses. This article reports on a study conducted to investigate the structure of WHOQOL-BREF scores. Competing latent structures of the data were examined in a general population sample. In addition, the complete factorial invariance of the retained model was investigated across gender. We also investigated latent mean differences in the QOL dimensions over age as well as age by gender interactions effects. Based on responses to the WHOQOL-BREF, support was found for a bifactor exploratory structural equation modeling representation of the data. This measurement structure accounts for construct-relevant multidimensionality in item responses due to the presence of general and specific factors underlying the data and the fallibility of indictors as pure reflections of only the single constructs they are purported to measure. Furthermore, support was found for measurement and structural invariance across gender. Finally, evidence was obtained for a curvilinear relationship of age with QOL, characterized by a midlife nadir. Taken together, the results of the study yield important validation data for the WHOQOL-BREF and tentatively resolve the dimensionality issues in the measurement of QOL using this instrument.

Previous research into the potential ‘dark’ side of trait emotional intelligence (EI) has repeatedly demonstrated that trait EI is negatively associated with Machiavellianism. In this study, we reassess the potential dark side of trait EI, by testing whether Agreeableness mediates and/or moderates the relationship between trait EI and Machiavellianism. Hypothesized mediation and moderation effects were tested using a large sample of 884 workers who completed several self-report questionnaires. Results provide support for both hypotheses; Agreeableness was found to mediate and moderate the relationship between trait EI and Machiavellianism. Overall, results indicate that individuals high in trait EI tend to have low levels of Machiavellianism because they generally have a positive nature (i.e. are agreeable) and not because they are emotionally competent per se. Results also indicate that individuals high in ‘perceived emotional competence’ have the potential to be high in Machiavellianism, particularly when they are low in Agreeableness.

In the current study, we sought to determine whether sex-linked dimensions of trait emotional intelligence (interpersonal vs intrapersonal dimensions) could account for the protective effects of sex-linked traits (masculinity, femininity) on stress. We also sought to determine whether the efficacy of characteristically masculine and feminine emotional competencies in the context of stress, might depend on whether someone is male or female. Participants were 206 white-collar workers who completed a range of questionnaires measuring masculinity, femininity, trait emotional intelligence and ongoing stress. Results demonstrated that across both men and women, masculinity and femininity protect from stress via wellbeing (a non-sex linked component of trait emotional intelligence). Results also demonstrated that, again for both men and women, masculinity protects from stress via self-control (a masculine dimension of trait emotional intelligence). More interestingly, results demonstrated that for women only, femininity protects from stress via the feminine dimension of trait emotional intelligence (emotionality). Emotionality was not found to be beneficial for feminine men in the context of stress. Results are explained in terms of established gender differences in emotional processing.

Profiling involves the collection and use of online information about prospective and current employees to evaluate their fitness for and in the job. Workplace and legal studies suggest an expanded use of profiling and significant legal/professional implications for HRM practitioners, yet scant attention has been afforded to the boundaries of such practices. In this study, profiling is framed as a terrain on which employees and employers assert asymmetrical interests. Using survey data from large samples in Australia and the UK, the study investigates the prevalence and outcomes of profiling; the extent to which employees assert a right to privacy versus employer rights to engage in profiling; the extent to which organisations codify profiling practices; and employee responses in protecting online information. The findings contribute to a small and emerging body of evidence addressing how social media conduct at work is reconstituting and reshaping the boundaries between public and private spheres.

We distinguish within-person, process models of personality from the more widely researched between-person models of personality. The primary difference between these two model types is that process models provide an understanding of the dynamic processes at the individual level, whereas between-person models only advance knowledge of differences between people. We argue that revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory provides an excellent building block for process models of personality in which temperament is re-expressed through socio-cognitive mechanisms. We review four personality process models based on revised or original Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory and demonstrate how such process models address research questions beyond the scope of between-person models. We advocate that process models of personality improve theoretical knowledge compared to between-person personality models and deserve greater attention.

The Learning Styles Profiler (LSP; Jackson, 2002 ) is a modern measure of individual differences in learning style. The LSP is based on a neuropsychological model of learning, modeled on principles of approach and avoidance, and argues for the division of personality into temperament and character. There has been little research into the psychometric structure and predictive validity of this instrument. In Study 1, the factor structure of the LSP is examined, and in Study 2 the criterion-related validity of the LSP is assessed. Results support the proposed factor structure of the LSP and show that 3 of the 4 LSP scales are significant predictors of Job Performance.

The National Project to Counter Stigma and Discrimination was established by the New Zealand government in1997. The Project recognised that people with a diagnosis of mental illness are marginalized and excluded from full participation in society. The Mental Health Foundation was contracted to provide workshops for mental health service providers to shift workplace attitudes and behaviours that were discriminatory or stigmatising. This thesis used a case study approach to capture and evaluate the significance and nature of the transitory form of process drama in three workshops I facilitated in largely Maori communities in the far north of the North Island. The principles of reflective practitioner research informed the use of research tools, data collection and analysis. This research focused particularly on reflective strategies that occurred inside process drama work and the way in which meaning was constructed in that context. The central research question asked: 'In what ways does process drama work to assist people to reflect on their attitudes and behaviours associated with mental illness?' This raised a secondary question: 'What potential is there for a model to counter stigma and discrimination that uses process drama as a central strategy?' This thesis posits a new model for understanding the nature of reflection in process drama. The mimetic notions of the fictional and the real as discrete and defined entities should instead be seen as permeable frames of existence that on occasions collide and collapse into each other. The double paradox of process drama is that, having created an empathetic relationship with the roles taken, we purposefully structure distance so we can then deliberately collapse the distance to create deep moments of reflection. I suggest a more accurate term to describe reflection in process drama is refraction. Refraction acknowledges that, rather than clarity, process drama seeks ambiguity: instead of resolving issues it seeks to further problematise and complexify. The tension of working with a democratic and open-ended art form towards a pre-ordained end as part of the project is closely examined. The impact of performative rituals and proto drama processes as part of the context of working in Maori settings is also explored. A three step model for countering stigma and discrimination is formulated and workshopped. The content of the model is based on an analysis of research undertaken within an anti-racist context, and models that have informed similar mental health campaigns. The form of the model is process drama. An analysis of the workshops demonstrated that the first model developed was limited in its effectiveness. Instead, participants should engage in repeating cycles of generating and investigating images. This leads to the development of what I have termed the Spiral Three Step Model. Although the effectiveness of the Spiral model is not tested in this research, it became apparent that the workshops based on this structure provided opportunities for participants to consider and reflect/refract deeply on their workplace's attitudes and behaviours.

Road crashes involving occupants of light passenger vehicles are the leading cause of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Confirming the results of an earlier study, this study showed that: in single vehicle car crashes in the country, the odds of SCI were nearly five times higher (4.7) for occupants of non-sedan type light passenger vehicles compared with sedans; in single vehicle rollover crashes in the country, the odds of SCI were nearly three times higher (2.8) in non-sedans compared with sedans; the odds of SCI were nearly five times higher (4.8) for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) compared with sedans. When the data from the earlier study was included in order to increase statistical power, it was found that when compared to sedans that did not roll, occupants of all types of light passenger vehicles had a statistically significant substantially higher likelihood of SCI when involved in rollover (sedans 7.5 times, SUVs 5.9 times and others 8.4 times). In addition, SUVs had a higher likelihood of SCI even when not involved in rollover (5.4 times). Vehicle designers and regulators need to give more attention to the prevention of vehicle rollover and the means to improve occupant protection in the event of rollover. This study should be extended nationally to gain a larger case series so that the SCI risk of particular vehicle configurations, considering other crash factors, can be more precisely quantified and characteristics for low occurrence of SCI identified.

All maritime fatalities investigated by Coroners that occurred in Australia from 1992 to 1998 inclusive have been collated, coded and recorded in the Australian Boating Injury Database: Fatal Injury (ABID:FI). This article focuses on the work-related maritime fatalities recorded in the database. Over the period 1992-1998 there were 74 fatalities involving people who were working for income at the time of the incident: 46 commercial fishermen, 12 seamen involved in the transport of cargo and 16 miscellaneous workers. The fatality rate of commercial fishermen has declined substantially in Australia over recent years. The main contributing factors were: hazardous conditions; an error of judgement; unsafe work practices; and failure to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) in circumstances where, in the opinion of the Coroners, it would have saved life. Hazardous conditions were much more of a factor in fishermen deaths than in other maritime deaths. Most vessels involved had an insufficient number of PFDs for the number of crew on board. The Australian fatal injury database should be updated with the details of recent fatalities in order to further monitor safety performance, causal factors and prevention measures in the maritime industry in Australia. Attention should be focused on reducing alcohol use and increasing PFD availability and usage. In order to continue to improve safety, it is essential that a constructive dialogue is maintained with industry sources, informed by independent research and up-to-date information.

This study reports on trends in spinal cord injury based on the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register (ASCIR), which provided full coverage in those aged 15 years and over. The underlying annual rate of change from 1986 to 1997 was calculated for age-specific, crude and age-standardised incidence rates. An appropriate model for this type of data was the Poisson regression model, with a Poisson error distribution, a log link function and the natural log of population treated as an 'offset'. It was found that there was no change in the age-standardised rate of spinal cord injury. However, an assessment of specific rates by age, sex, cause and neurological group revealed some contrasting trends, notably declining rates in young males, transport-related injury and complete tetraplegia, and increasing rates in elderly males, fall-related injury and incomplete tetraplegia and complete paraplegia. These changes are considered to reflect the impact of a raft of public health measures directed at transport-related injury but a paucity of prevention programs directed at fall-related spinal cord injury. More research is required to determine the causes of the increasing rate of elderly male fall-related spinal cord injury. There is also more that can be done to prevent transport-related spinal cord injury. Sport utility vehicles pose an increased concern. In order to reinvigorate the debate about the need for a vehicle rollover resistance rating in Australia, the spinal cord injury risk of different models of SUV should be measured. This has already been implemented in the United States, providing the public with information to assist purchasing based on safety considerations.

The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and prevention of the 333 boating deaths that occurred in Australia over the period 1992-1998. It involved: assessment of the Coroner's findings; review of witness statements, police reports, autopsy findings, search and rescue reports, weather maps and reports; analysis of forensic and scientific data; assessment of photographic evidence; review of other related information. The data were coded according to a recently developed national data standard. It was found that nearly half of the vessels involved had an insufficient number of personal flotation devices for the number of people on board; of all people killed only 9% were wearing them, and survivors were more than two times more likely to have been wearing them. If usage could be increased to 75%, five lives could be saved each year with a cost saving to the Australian community of nearly $8 million. The contribution of alcohol to boating deaths (28% in excess of 0.05g/100ml) was similar to its contribution to road deaths. The sequence of events resulting in a boating death was initiated most often by capsize (36%). Capsize was more likely to involve overloading or improper loading, hazardous wind or sea conditions, and dinghies. Twenty-five percent of the vessels involved in fatalities were dinghies and they were more likely to be overloaded, involve capsize, alcohol, and failure to wear a personal flotation device. Fatalities involving personal watercraft were mainly caused by human factors. Boating causes a significant level of harm to the Australian community measured in terms of mortality. This can be reduced by a concerted effort to address the identified hazards and protective factors.

The objective of this study was to assess the role of helmets and helmet type in relation to injury to the cervical spinal cord. It was based on a consecutive series of 110 motorcyclists with neurological damage to the spinal cord admitted alive (referred to as acute survivors) to a specialist spinal cord injuries unit at an Australian hospital. Cases were those with injury to the cervical spinal cord and controls were those with injury to the cord of other segments of the spine. The study showed that there was no significant difference in the odds of cervical spinal cord injury among unhelmeted and helmeted motorcyclist acute survivors. In addition, it confirmed the findings of a recently published Australian fatality study demonstrating no difference in the odds of cervical spinal cord injury among full-face and open-face helmet wearers. These results contrasted with the findings of earlier studies. In consideration of the limitations of existing research on the role of helmets in spinal cord injury, further study is required based on a larger series or a series having a higher proportion of non-wearers and open-face helmet wearers, including both survivors and those killed, and including assessment of cord and non-cord spinal injuries separately, helmet type, head impact, and helmet retention.

O'Connor PJ. Forecasting of spinal cord injury annual case numbers in Australia. Objectives To forecast annual numbers of cases of spinal cord injury (SCI) and to assess the effect on case mix. Design Cohort of incident cases from 1986 to 1997, with forecasting to 2021. Setting Australian cases registered by treatment centers for the acute care and rehabilitation of SCI patients. Participants A total of 2959 SCI patients, aged 15 years and over, identified through the Australian Spinal Cord Register. Interventions Not applicable. Main outcome measures Incidence and case mix. Results If the recent trends in SCI continue (ie, a 6.21% per annum rate increase in elderly men and a 2.8% per annum rate decrease in young men), the annual number of cases will increase from 253 in 1997 to 464 in 2021. In addition, the case mix would change substantially and the number and proportion of elderly persons with SCI would increase from 32 cases per annum in 1997 (13% of cases) to 233 per annum in 2021 (47% of cases). In addition, there would be a 143% increase in the number of cases of incomplete tetraplegia, from 88 cases per annum in 1997 to 214 cases per annum in 2021. Substantial increases would occur even if the age-specific rates of SCI were stable over the period. Conclusions Population growth, and aging, plus increasing rates of SCI in the elderly will have profound effects on the expected number of SCI patients and their case mix. Treatment centers in Australia will need to plan for these changes. At the same time, there should be increased efforts to prevent SCI in order to ameliorate the problem.

O'Connor PJ. Survival after spinal cord injury in Australia. Objective To assess survival after spinal cord injury (SCI) in Australia. Design Cohort study of incident cases from 1986 to 1997, with follow-up to the end of 1998. Setting Cases registered by 6 Australian treatment centers for the acute care and rehabilitation of SCI patients. Participants Subjects (N=2892), age 15 years and older, from a national population-based SCI register. Interventions Not applicable. Main outcome measures Cumulative and relative survival proportions and hazard ratios. Results The all-cases cumulative survival proportion was 94% at 1 year and 86% at 10 years; the relative survival proportions were 95% and 92%, respectively. Significant predictors of survival were: age at injury, sex, neurologic level, and extent of lesion. Cox regression modeling revealed a statistically significant reduction in the 2-month (36% reduction, P =.01) and 1-year (27% reduction, P =.04) hazard ratio from 1986 to 1991 to 1992 to 1997. Benchmarking analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in survival experience between the 6 spinal treatment units. Conclusions Further improvement in survival rates can be achieved through better understanding of the predictors, temporal patterns, and causes of death, and by benchmarking. Early deaths have an important impact on overall survival rates, and warrant further study. International standardization of methods is strongly recommended.

Previous studies suggest that bladder cancer risk may vary with GST genotype but these results are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to explore whether GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP polymorphisms were associated with increased bladder cancer risk in an Egyptian population. GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 genotype frequencies were determined in bladder cancer cases (n=72) and healthy controls with no history of malignancies (n=82) using PCR-based techniques. The GSTT1*2 genotype was particularly associated with increased risk (OR 2.71, 95%CI 1.27-5.73) and the GSTM1*2 genotype to a lesser extent (OR 1.63, 95%CI 0.85-3.10). 18.1% of cases but only 7.3% of controls were GSTP1*B*B homozygotes (OR 2.38, 95%CI 0.83-6.87). The presence of two or more a priori at-risk genotypes was associated with increased bladder cancer risk (OR 2.42; 95%CI 1.47-3.97). These results suggest that polymorphisms in the GST genes are associated with increased risk of bladder cancer among Egyptians.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether routine state-wide hospitalization data can be used for population level surveillance of the incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) from motor vehicle traffic crashes (MVTCs) and to verify the coverage of the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register. A method was developed to identify new injury incidents from routine South Australian hospitalization data. Mapping software was then used to derive the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Injury Impairment Scale (IIS) codes for each incident case of spinal injury using the principal diagnosis code on the hospital data file. IIS code values in the range from 3 to 6 were considered to be comparable with the SCI coding criteria utilized by the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register (ASCIR) which were based on the criteria of the American Spinal Injury Association. The number of estimated new incident cases of SCI based on the IIS coding of hospitalization data was compared with the actual number reported from the ASCIR. The case numbers were highly comparable overall and also by time and age group suggesting that the coverage of the ASCIR was very high. The results of the study support use of the IIS for estimating incident case numbers of MVTC-related SCI from routine state-wide hospitalization data. If routine hospital separations data elsewhere were suitable for the purpose and the IIS also proves to be applicable to non-MVTC-related SCI, the incidence of SCI could be monitored in state and national populations using the IIS and this could provide an alternative data source where registers of SCI do not exist. In addition, the IIS provides a means to assess coverage where registers do exist.

The mixed function oxidase system includes the phase I drug oxidation proteins e.g. aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH), N-nitrosodimethylamine-N-demethylase I (NDMA-dI) and cytochrome b5 which metabolize most carcinogens and xenobiotics into less and/or more active intermediates. These were determined in human bladder tissues diagnosed as bladder cancer only (10 samples) and bladder cancer associated with Schistosoma haematobium (12 samples) and normal bladder tissues (12 samples). In addition to the above enzymes, agents involved in Phase II drug metabolism e.g. glutathione and glutathione S-transferase as well as free radicals (detected as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, TBARS) were also determined in these tissues samples. AAH and NDMA-dI, cytochrome b5, and glutathione S-transferase activity decreased by 42, 28, 47 and 32%, respectively, in human bladder cancer tissues. In bladder cancer tissues associated with S. haematobium infection NDMA-dI and GST activity decreased further by 65 and 56%, respectively, whereas AHH activity increased by 50% and levels of reduced glutathione also increased by 43% in cancer tissue and by 29% in schistocome infected bladder cancer tissue. The level of free radicals also increased significantly (by 57%) in infected bladder cancer tissue but not at all in non-infected cancer tissue. Alterations in the activity of phase I and II of drug-metabolizing enzymes in human bladder tissues as a result of S. haematobium infection may therefore change the bladder's capacity to detoxify many endogenous compounds and may also potentiate the deleterious effects of bladder carcinogens, (e.g. N-nitrosamines) which are known to be present in relatively large quantities in the bladder of patients with schistosomiasis. The present study thus provides new insights into mechanisms for the genesis of bladder cancer initiated in association with schistosomiasis.

Putative risk factors (DNA damage) and risk modifying factors (DNA repair and cell proliferation) were examined in an experimental mouse model in which treatment with dimethylhydrazine (6.8 mg/kg DMH i.p. once weekly) for up to 20 weeks induces colon tumours in a site specific manner with 0, 43 and 87% of animals having proximal, mid and distal colon tumours respectively at the highest cumulative dose. Levels of the pro-carcinogenic DNA adduct, O(6)-methylguanine (O(6)-MeG), in colonic DNA were found to vary with time after final treatment and with location within the colon but not with total DMH dose. O(6)-MeG levels were generally lowest in proximal colon DNA and highest in distal colon DNA. Steady state O(6)-MeG levels were obtained at the highest cumulative DMH dose with O(6)-MeG levels in mid and distal colon DNA being 5 and 10 times higher those in proximal colon DNA. O(6)-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (MGMT) activity, and cell proliferation indices in the colon were also found to vary with time after final treatment but not with either location within the colon or total DMH dose. O(6)-MeG levels, MGMT activity and cell proliferation indices at specific time points as well as basal MGMT activity were not associated with differences in tumour yield within the colon. However tumour yield was associated with the cumulative amount of O(6)-MeG present in DNA over the treatment period and with the treatment induced cumulative increase in cell proliferation, particularly within regions of the colon crypt where stem cells reside but not with cumulative changes in MGMT activity. Results are consistent with an increased cancer risk arising from an increased mutation load in the target stem cell population due to increased adduct formation/persistence and cell proliferation but also suggest that other cell specific factors may help to determine tumourigenic response.

The objective of this paper is to report on the epidemiology of spinal cord injury (SCI) based on the Australian SCI register and to discuss the implications for prevention. All adult cases of SCI are reported to the registry. The case reports for 1998/1999 were aggregated and described. The age adjusted rate of persisting SCI was 14.5 per million of population. Rates were highest in young adults and in males. The vast majority of cases (93%) were due to unintentional injury. Forty-three percent were due to motor vehicle crashes, principally from motor vehicle rollover. Cases of SCI from falls, aquatic activities, and working for income are also described. Incomplete cervical cord injuries were most common (38%), particularly as a result of motor vehicle crashes and low falls. The study indicates that the surveillance of SCI needs to be improved internationally so that comparative studies can be undertaken. It is recommended that the Centers for Disease Control case definition be adopted. Australia is one of the few countries that have a register based on that case definition, and the only one that has a register covering a full national adult population. The results presented on the basis of this data source provide some hitherto unavailable information on the incidence rates and patterns of SCI. National population based surveillance is fundamental to an understanding of the epidemiology, and hence the prevention, of this severe and costly health and welfare problem.

Motor vehicle traffic crashes (MVTCs) are the leading cause of traumatic spinal cord injury. Evidence of putative risk factors for this type of injury comes largely from descriptive studies. This study is the first case-control study of risk factors for spinal cord injury specifically in car crashes. Cases of occupant spinal cord injury in South Australia were identified from the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register (ASCIR) which provides full coverage of the adult population. The comparison group was other seriously injured car occupants. In single vehicle car crashes in the country, the likelihood of spinal cord injury was five times higher for occupants of non-sedan type cars compared with sedans. The likelihood of spinal cord injury was especially high in non-sedan type cars involved in rollover crashes; ten times higher than sedans. The implications of the findings for prevention are highlighted. Concern is expressed over the increasing proportion of four wheel drive passenger vehicles (sport utility vehicles) in the car fleet in Australia, and in the USA, as they are more prone to rollover.

This paper aims to answer how we can increase students’ engagement in a large class. We hypothesised that the use of KeyPad, an interactive student response system, can lead to enhanced student engagement in a large classroom. We tested a model of classroom technology integration enhancing the students’ engagement among first year undergraduate students (n=131). This study provides evidence of significant effect of positive attitude and social pressure on the intent to use KeyPads. In turn, the intent to use KeyPads leads to the actual use of KeyPads which is directly associated with the level of student engagement. In addition, we find evidence for the relationship between extraversion and level of engagement such that compared to extrovert students, introvert students felt more engaged.

Aim To identify key predictors and moderators of mental health ‘help-seeking behavior’ in adolescents. Background Mental illness is highly prevalent in adolescents and young adults; however, individuals in this demographic group are among the least likely to seek help for such illnesses. Very little quantitative research has examined predictors of help-seeking behaviour in this demographic group. Design A cross-sectional design was used. Methods A group of 180 volunteers between the ages of 17–25 completed a survey designed to measure hypothesized predictors and moderators of help-seeking behaviour. Predictors included a range of health beliefs, personality traits and attitudes. Data were collected in August 2010 and were analysed using two standard and three hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Findings The standard multiple regression analyses revealed that extraversion, perceived benefits of seeking help, perceived barriers to seeking help and social support were direct predictors of help-seeking behaviour. Tests of moderated relationships (using hierarchical multiple regression analyses) indicated that perceived benefits were more important than barriers in predicting help-seeking behaviour. In addition, perceived susceptibility did not predict help-seeking behaviour unless individuals were health conscious to begin with or they believed that they would benefit from help. Conclusion A range of personality traits, attitudes and health beliefs can predict help-seeking behaviour for mental health problems in adolescents. The variable ‘Perceived Benefits’ is of particular importance as it is: (1) a strong and robust predictor of help-seeking behaviour, and; (2) a factor that can theoretically be modified based on health promotion programmes.
