1. A Modular 512-Channel Neural Signal Acquisition ASIC for High-Density 4096 Channel Electrophysiology

Abstract: The complexity of information processing in the brain requires the development of technologies that can provide spatial and temporal resolution by means of dense electrode arrays paired with high-channel-count signal acquisition electronics. In this work, we present an ultra-low noise modular 512-channel neural recording circuit that is scalable to up to 4096 simultaneously recording channels. The neural readout application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) uses a dense 8.2 mm × 6.8 mm 2D layout to enable high-channel count, creating an ultra-light 350 mg flexible module. The module can be deployed on headstages for small animals like rodents and songbirds, and it can be integrated with a variety of electrode arrays. The chip was fabricated in a TSMC 0.18 µm 1.8 V CMOS technology and dissipates a total of 125 mW. Each DC-coupled channel features a gain and bandwidth programmable analog front-end along with 14 b analog-to-digital conversion at speeds up to 30 kS/s. Additionally, each front-end includes programmable electrode plating and electrode impedance measurement capability. We present both standalone and in vivo measurements results, demonstrating the readout of spikes and field potentials that are modulated by a sensory input.

2. A low noise CMOS camera system for 2D resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering

Abstract: Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique to study quantum properties of materials in the bulk. A novel variant of RIXS, called 2D RIXS, enables concurrent measurement of the scattered X-ray spectrum for a wide range of input energies, improving on the typically low throughput of 1D RIXS. In the soft X-ray domain, 2D RIXS demands an X-ray camera system with small pixels, large area, high quantum efficiency and low noise to limit the false detection rate in long duration exposures. We designed and implemented a 7.5 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS detector with 5 μm pixels and high quantum efficiency in the 200–1,000 eV X-ray energy range for the QERLIN 2D RIXS spectrometer at the Advanced Light Source. The QERLIN beamline and detector are currently in commissioning. The camera noise from in-situ 3 s long dark exposures is 7e− or less and the leakage current is 6.5 × 10−3 e−/(pixel ∙ s). For individual 500 eV X-rays, the expected efficiency is greater than 75% and the false detection rate is ∼1 × 10−5 per pixel.

3. VeryFastCCD: a high frame rate soft X-ray detector

Abstract: Direct X-ray detection in silicon has been transformative for scattering experiments in biology and materials science. While bump-bonded hybrid pixels have been attractive for hard X-ray detection, the challenge for single photon soft X-ray detection is sufficiently low noise. CCD structures on thick, high-resistivity silicon have been successfully used as sensors over the range of soft to hard X-rays at storage rings and FELs. The VeryFastCCD is a high frame rate, column-parallel CCD sensor with 48 μm pixels. Combined with 256-channel custom readout ASICs, frame rates of 5–10 kHz have been achieved with readout noise as low as 20 e and full-well capacity >4 × 105 e/pixel. Thin (10 nm and 100 nm) entrance window contact processes have also been developed which provide >85% quantum efficiency for 285 eV X-rays. Systems are currently being developed for several beamlines at the upgraded Advanced Light Source.

Abstract: Abstract The combination of electrophysiology and optogenetics enables the exploration of how the brain operates down to a single neuron and its network activity. Neural probes are in vivo invasive devices that integrate sensors and stimulation sites to record and manipulate neuronal activity with high spatiotemporal resolution. State-of-the-art probes are limited by tradeoffs involving their lateral dimension, number of sensors, and ability to access independent stimulation sites. Here, we realize a highly scalable probe that features three-dimensional integration of small-footprint arrays of sensors and nanophotonic circuits to scale the density of sensors per cross-section by one order of magnitude with respect to state-of-the-art devices. For the first time, we overcome the spatial limit of the nanophotonic circuit by coupling only one waveguide to numerous optical ring resonators as passive nanophotonic switches. With this strategy, we achieve accurate on-demand light localization while avoiding spatially demanding bundles of waveguides and demonstrate the feasibility with a proof-of-concept device and its scalability towards high-resolution and low-damage neural optoelectrodes.

Abstract: Neuroscience continues to experience a tremendous growth in data; in terms of the volume and variety of data, the velocity at which data is acquired, and in turn the veracity of data. These challenges are a serious impediment to sharing of data, analyses, and tools within and across labs. Here, we introduce BRAINformat, a novel data standardization framework for the design and management of scientific data formats. The BRAINformat library defines application-independent design concepts and modules that together create a general framework for standardization of scientific data. We describe the formal specification of scientific data standards, which facilitates sharing and verification of data and formats. We introduce the concept of Managed Objects, enabling semantic components of data formats to be specified as self-contained units, supporting modular and reusable design of data format components and file storage. We also introduce the novel concept of Relationship Attributes for modeling and use of semantic relationships between data objects. Based on these concepts we demonstrate the application of our framework to design and implement a standard format for electrophysiology data and show how data standardization and relationship-modeling facilitate data analysis and sharing. The format uses HDF5, enabling portable, scalable, and self-describing data storage and integration with modern high-performance computing for data-driven discovery. Abstract: Electron microscopy is uniquely suited for atomic-resolution imaging of heterogeneous and complex materials, where composition, physical, and electronic structure need to be analyzed simultaneously. Historically, the technique has demonstrated optimal performance at room temperature, since practical aspects such as vibration, drift, and contamination limit exploration at extreme temperature regimes. Conversely, quantum materials that exhibit exotic physical properties directly tied to the quantum mechanical nature of electrons are best studied (and often only exist) at extremely low temperatures. As a result, emergent phenomena, such as superconductivity, are typically studied using scanning probe-based techniques that can provide exquisite structural and electronic characterization, but are necessarily limited to surfaces. In this article, we focus not on the various methods that have been used to examine quantum materials at extremely low temperatures, but on what could be accomplished in the field of quantum materials if the power of electron microscopy to provide structural analysis at the atomic scale was extended to extremely low temperatures.

Abstract: Programmable Electronic Termination and Line Driver (PETAL) is a 16-channel ADC driver chip that provides single-ended-to-differential conversion and column biasing for high-speed CMOS image sensors. By increasing the level of integration, the number of driver chips and the associated number of passives and the routing area are reduced, enabling smaller physical cameras. Power dissipation is reduced relative to many commercial approaches by the use of low-voltage CMOS technology and the increased level of integration. The driver chip also supplies programmable bias currents to the sensor, further reducing the number of required components on the camera board. The driver, fabricated in 180-nm CMOS technology, achieves settling to 0.1% in 11 ns with input noise of 89.9- $\mu \text{V}$ rms. The crosstalk between channels is below −56 dB. The power dissipation is 10.5 mW/channel. When applied to the readout of a high-speed X-ray sensor, the prototype reduced board area by 84% (from 100 to 16 mm2) and power dissipation by 25%.

Abstract: A 24-channel application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for the readout of high-speed CMOS active pixel sensors for charged particle detection is presented. The chip comprises 24 preamplifiers, 24 distinct 12-bit, 25 MSPS Pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with self-calibration, an internal phase-locked loop (PLL), and a 3 Gbps serial interface that conforms to the JESD204B standard. To simplify interfacing with a variety of sensors, the ASIC also includes an automatic offset calibration loop. The high level of integration of the ASIC reduces overall system cost and area, and exploiting the signal characteristics of the image sensor allows the ADC to be optimized for reduced power dissipation. The use of an integrated serializer and an industry standard protocol simplifies integration of the ASIC into a complete camera system. The ASIC, called the High-Speed Image Preprocessor Targeted for Electron Readout, or HIPSTER, with a die area of 64.26 mm2, is packaged in a 480-ball grid array (BGA) and is fabricated in 180-nm CMOS technology. HIPSTER achieves typical differential nonlinearity (DNL) < 0.55 LSB, input-referred thermal noise of $114.5~\mu \text{V}$ -rms, and a bit error rate (BER) of better than 10-14. The power dissipation is 98 mW/channel.

Abstract: A novel ultrahigh-resolution x-ray microscope achieves 8-nm spatial resolution and accurately maps chemistry in nanomaterials., The analysis of chemical states and morphology in nanomaterials is central to many areas of science. We address this need with an ultrahigh-resolution scanning transmission soft x-ray microscope. Our instrument provides multiple analysis tools in a compact assembly and can achieve few-nanometer spatial resolution and high chemical sensitivity via x-ray ptychography and conventional scanning microscopy. A novel scanning mechanism, coupled to advanced x-ray detectors, a high-brightness x-ray source, and high-performance computing for analysis provide a revolutionary step forward in terms of imaging speed and resolution. We present x-ray microscopy with 8-nm full-period spatial resolution and use this capability in conjunction with operando sample environments and cryogenic imaging, which are now routinely available. Our multimodal approach will find wide use across many fields of science and facilitate correlative analysis of materials with other types of probes.

Abstract: A 256-channel readout application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) called the very low-noise analog sampling engine (VASE) intended for the readout of column-parallel charge-coupled devices (CP-CCDs), is presented. Each channel uses a charge-sensitive amplifier and a first-order dual-gain sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that act as the front end of an extended counting ADC. The extended counting ADC directly implements correlated multiple-sampling as part of its operation. To reduce the noise due to input capacitance and to ensure a compact camera, the VASE input bonding pads are pitch matched to the CP-CCD to allow chip-to-chip bonding with minimal parasitic capacitance. The chip is designed in a modular way with each 16 input channels sharing a single differential analog output and digital serializer. VASE, with a die area of 38.1 mm2 and fabricated in 180-nm CMOS technology, achieves 22 e− equivalent noise charge (ENC) and a dynamic range of 190 ke− (78.7 dB) at a 4-MHz pixel rate (corresponding to a frame rate of 32 kfps when a $256\times256$ pixel sensor is read out on both sides) while dissipating 10.1 mW per channel. The prototype has been used to successfully image X-ray diffraction at a soft X-ray synchrotron.

Abstract: A 16-channel analog front-end integrated circuit (IC) for interfacing an image sensor with single-ended analog output to a differential-input digitizer is presented. The IC is designed for image sensors used in single-electron counting direct detection cameras with applications in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), but it’s high flexibility allows usage with a variety of sensors. An operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) and a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) replace the traditional instrumentation amplifier, to allow power reduction and decoupling of the gain and bandwidth stages. This allows for a tunable gain in order to exploit the digitizer full-scale range, and an independent bandwidth tuning capability to accommodate a variety of sensors. Additionally, the front-end supports a very wide input common-mode range, and provides offset correction capability as well as frame marker operation. The chip is fabricated in a commercially available 180nm CMOS technology using dual 3.3V/1.8V supply. It achieves more than ±10% gain tunability at 0-1.2V sensor dark-level range, and up to 142MHz operation. Power consumption is measured at 37mW/channel with 155µV input-referred noise, at nominal conditions. The chip is a low-power, low-noise, highly optimized solution allowing area and power reduction in camera assemblies.

Abstract: A 256-channel readout ASIC called VASE, intended for the readout of Column-Parallel Charge-Coupled Devices (CP-CCD), is presented. Each channel employs a chargesensitive amplifier and a first-order Sigma Delta ADC that acts as the front end of an Extended Counting ADC. To reduce the noise due to input capacitance and to ensure a compact camera, each VASE channel is pitch matched to the CP-CCD to allow chip-to-chip bonding with minimal parasitic capacitance. VASE, with a die area of approximately 38.1 mm2 and fabricated in 180 nm CMOS technology, achieves approximately 22 e- ENC at a 4 MHz pixel rate while dissipating 1.1 mW per channel. The prototype has been used to successfully image X-ray diffraction at a soft X-ray synchrotron.

Abstract: The performance of battery electrode materials is strongly affected by inefficiencies in utilization kinetics and cycle life as well as size effects. Observations of phase transformations in these materials with high chemical and spatial resolution can elucidate the relationship between chemical processes and mechanical degradation. Soft X-ray ptychographic microscopy combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy creates a powerful suite of tools that we use to assess the chemical and morphological changes in lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) micro- and nanocrystals that occur upon delithiation. All sizes of partly delithiated crystals were found to contain two phases with a complex correlation between crystallographic orientation and phase distribution. Abstract: © 2016 IEEE. A high frame rate detector system is being developed to enable fast real-time data analysis of scanning diffraction experiments in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This is an end-to-end development that encompasses the data producing detector, data transportation, and real-time processing of data. The detector will consist of a central pixel sensor that is surrounded by annular silicon diodes. Both components of the detector system will synchronously capture data at almost 100 kHz frame rate, which produces an approximately 400 Gb/s data stream. Low-level preprocessing will be implemented in firmware before the data is streamed from the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Live data processing, before it lands on disk, will happen on the Cori supercomputer and aims to present scientists with prompt experimental feedback. This online analysis will provide rough information of the sample that can be utilized for sample alignment, sample monitoring and verification that the experiment is set up correctly. Only a compressed version of the relevant data is then selected for more in-depth processing.

Abstract: A modular architecture for Pipelined ADCs is proposed based on a simple unit cell. Given the cell and constraints, an optimized ADC can be designed, scaled, and laid out using software scripts. This enables a high-performance Pipelined ADC to be designed without the significant overhead of custom-designing each ADC stage, reducing design time. To demonstrate the architecture, a 24-channel, 12-bit, 25 MS/s ADC array for scientific imager readout has been implemented in 180 nm CMOS technology. The ADC array achieves input-referred noise of $190 {\mu } \mathrm {V} -$rms and crosstalk of less than -50 dB. The array dissipates 70 mW per channel.

Abstract: Two-dimensional detector improvements required to take advantage of diffraction-limited storage ring light sources are discussed., Dramatic advances in synchrotron radiation sources produce ever-brighter beams of X-rays, but those advances can only be used if there is a corresponding improvement in X-ray detectors. With the advent of storage ring sources capable of being diffraction-limited (down to a certain wavelength), advances in detector speed, dynamic range and functionality is required. While many of these improvements in detector capabilities are being pursued now, the orders-of-magnitude increases in brightness of diffraction-limited storage ring sources will require challenging non-incremental advances in detectors. This article summarizes the current state of the art, developments underway worldwide, and challenges that diffraction-limited storage ring sources present for detectors.

Abstract: A radiation-tolerant analog-to-digital converter (ADC) calibration algorithm based on measuring and correcting the code-density histogram of the converter under calibration is presented. The algorithm constructs a histogram of the ADC response to a linear ramp and stores the calculated correction coefficients in a lookup table. The algorithm uses techniques to increase tolerance to soft errors both during convergence and during normal operation. By leveraging circuit density improvements in deep submicron CMOS technology, the algorithm is able to provide substantive improvements to ADC static linearity performance at low silicon cost. The algorithm is applied to an 80-MS/s, 10-bit prototype Pipelined ADC implemented in 65-nm CMOS technology. The ADC is implemented with two additional stages to provide calibration data. The calibration algorithm improves measured integral nonlinearity from -4.11/1.32 least significant bits (LSB) to -0.29/0.30 LSB at a 10-bit level.

Abstract: Battery function is determined by the efficiency and reversibility of the electrochemical phase transformations at solid electrodes. The microscopic tools available to study the chemical states of matter with the required spatial resolution and chemical specificity are intrinsically limited when studying complex architectures by their reliance on two-dimensional projections of thick material. Here, we report the development of soft X-ray ptychographic tomography, which resolves chemical states in three dimensions at 11 nm spatial resolution. We study an ensemble of nano-plates of lithium iron phosphate extracted from a battery electrode at 50% state of charge. Using a set of nanoscale tomograms, we quantify the electrochemical state and resolve phase boundaries throughout the volume of individual nanoparticles. These observations reveal multiple reaction points, intra-particle heterogeneity, and size effects that highlight the importance of multi-dimensional analytical tools in providing novel insight to the design of the next generation of high-performance devices., Here the authors show the development of soft X-ray ptychographic tomography to quantify the electrochemical state and resolve phase boundaries throughout the volume of individual nano-particles from a composite battery electrode.

Abstract: The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) is currently being commissioned in Schenefeld, Germany. From 2017 onwards it will provide spatially coherent X-rays of energies between 0.25\,keV and 25\,keV with a unique timing structure. One of the detectors foreseen at XFEL.EU for the soft X-ray regime (energies below 6\,keV) is a quasi column-parallel readout FastCCD developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) specifically for the XFEL.EU requirements. Its sensor has 1920$\times$960 pixels of 30\,$\mu$m $\times$30\,$\mu$m size with a beam hole in the middle of the sensor. The camera can be operated in full frame and frame store mode. With the FastCCD a frame rate of up to 120~fps can be achieved, but at XFEL.EU the camera settings are optimized for the 10\,Hz XFEL bunch-mode. The detector has been delivered to XFEL.EU. Characterizing the chemistry and magnetism of magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) is an important aspect of understanding the biomineralization mechanism and function of the chains of magnetosomes (Fe3O4nanoparticles) found in such species. Images and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of magnetosomes extracted from, and magnetosomes in, whole Magnetovibrio blakemorei strain MV-1 cells have been recorded using soft X-ray ptychography at the Fe 2p edge. A spatial resolution of 7 nm is demonstrated. Precursor-like and immature magnetosome phases in a whole MV-1 cell were visualized, and their Fe 2p spectra were measured. Based on these results, a model for the pathway of magnetosome biomineralization for MV-1 is proposed. Fe 2p X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra have been derived from ptychography image sequences recorded using left and right circular polarization. The shape of the XAS and XMCD signals in the ptychographic absorption spectra of both sample types is identical to the shape and signals measured with conventional bright-field scanning transmission X-ray microscope. A weaker and inverted XMCD signal was observed in the ptychographic phase spectra of the extracted magnetosomes. The XMCD ptychographic phase spectrum of the intracellular magnetosomes differed from the ptychographic phase spectrum of the extracted magnetosomes. These results demonstrate that spectro-ptychography offers a superior means of characterizing the chemical and magnetic properties of MTB at the individual magnetosome level.

Abstract: Neuroscience continues to experience a tremendous growth in data; in terms of the volume and variety of data, the velocity at which data is acquired, and in turn the veracity of data. These challenges are a serious impediment to sharing of data, analyses, and tools within and across labs. Here, we introduce BRAINformat, a novel data standardization framework for the design and management of scientific data formats. The BRAINformat library defines application-independent design concepts and modules that together create a general framework for standardization of scientific data. We describe the formal specification of scientific data standards, which facilitates sharing and verification of data and formats. We introduce the concept of Managed Objects, enabling semantic components of data formats to be specified as self-contained units, supporting modular and reusable design of data format components and file storage. We also introduce the novel concept of Relationship Attributes for modeling and use of semantic relationships between data objects. Based on these concepts we demonstrate the application of our framework to design and implement a standard format for electrophysiology data and show how data standardization and relationship-modeling facilitate data analysis and sharing. The format uses HDF5, enabling portable, scalable, and self-describing data storage and integration with modern high-performance computing for data-driven discovery. Abstract: A search is performed for a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson and decaying into two photons, using the L3 data collected at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. All decay modes of the Z are considered. No signal is observed and limits on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay into two photons as a function of the Higgs mass are derived assuming a Standard Model production rate. A lower limit on the mass of a fermiophobic Higgs is set at 94.9 GeV at 95% confidence level., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: The Standard Model Higgs boson is searched for in 233.2 pb−1 of data collected by the L3 detector at centre of mass energies from 192 GeV to 202 GeV. These data are consistent with the expectations of Standard Model processes and no evidence of a Higgs signal is observed. Abstract: The S matrix ansatz is a rigorously model independent approach to describe the cross-sections and asymmetries in e+e- annihilation. Using the cross-sections and asymmetries measured with the L3 detector during the 1990 and 1991 running period, we determine the mass and the width of the Z boson, the contributions of the Z exchange and of the yZ interference. Including the polarization of the t lepton in the analysis, the leptonic helicity amplitudes of the scattering process are determined assuming lepton universality. The results are compared with other model independent ansatzes as realized in ZFITTER. A systematic bias of the Z mass due to the yZ interference term is detected, which leads to an underestimation of the error on mz for model independent determinations., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: The process eqeyaWqWyg is analysed using the data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.8 pby1 . Based on a sample of 42 selected WqWy candidates containing an isolated hard photon, the WqWyg cross section, defined within phase-space cuts, is measured to q y be: s WW s290"80"16 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. Including the process e e anngg, limits g are derived on anomalous contributions to the Standard Model quartic vertices WqWygg and WqWyZg at 95% CL: y0.043 GeVy2-a rL2-0.043 GeVy2 , y0.08 GeVy2-a rL2-0.13 GeVy2 , y0.41 GeVy2-a rL2-0.37 GeVy2, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: We use ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction to study the magnetic order in CuO under conditions of high electronic excitation. By measuring changes in the spectral shape of the Cu2+ magnetic (1/2 0 â1/2) reflection we investigate how an intense optical pump pulse perturbs the electronic and magnetic states. We observe an energy shift in the magnetic resonance at short times after the pump pulse. This shift is compared with expectations from band structure calculations at different electronic temperatures. This spectral line shift indicates that although the electrons are heated to effective electron temperatures far above TN on a time scale faster than the experimental resolution, magnetic order persists in this highly excited state for several hundred femtoseconds. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract: We present results obtained from a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at various centre-of-mass energies. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are measured from 30 GeV to 189 GeV and compared with various QCD models. The energy dependence of the moments of event shape variables is used to test a power law ansatz for the non-perturbative component. We obtain a universal value of Ž 2 the non-perturbative parameter a s 0.537 ± 0.073. From a comparison with resummed O(αs2)QCD calculations, we 0 s determine the strong coupling constant at each of the selected energies. Abstract: Extra spatial dimensions are proposed by recent theories that postulate the scale of gravity to be of the same order as the electroweak scale. A sizeable interaction between gravitons and Standard Model particles is then predicted. Effects of these new interactions in boson and fermion pair production are searched for in the data sample collected at centre-of-mass energies above the Z pole by the L3 detector at LEP. In addition, the direct production of a graviton associated with a Z boson is investigated. No statistically significant hints for the existence of these effects are found and lower limits in excess of 1 TeV are derived on the scale of this new theory of gravity, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: A search for rare charmless decays of B0d and B0s mesons has been performed in the exclusive channels B0d(s) →ηη0, B0d(s) →ηπ0 and B0d(s) →π0π0. The data sample consisted of three million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1994. No candidate event has been observed and the following upper limits at 90% confidence level on the branching ratios have been set: Br(B0d→ηη) −4, Br(B0s →ηη) < 1.5 x 10−3, Br(B0d→ηπ0) < 2.5 x 10−4, Br(B0s→ηπ0) < 1.0 x 10−3, Br(B0d→π0π0) < 6.0 x 10−5, Br(B0s→π0π0) < 2.1 x 10−4. Abstract: CMOS monolithic active pixel sensors are currently being established as the technology of choice for new generation digital imaging systems in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A careful sensor design that couples μm-level pixel pitches with high frame rate readout and radiation hardness to very high electron doses enables the fabrication of direct electron detectors that are quickly revolutionizing high-resolution TEM imaging in material science and molecular biology. This paper will review the principal characteristics of this novel technology and its advantages over conventional, optically-coupled cameras, and retrace the sensor development driven by the Transmission Electron Aberration corrected Microscope (TEAM) project at the LBNL National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM), illustrating in particular the imaging capabilities enabled by single electron detection at high frame rate. Further, the presentation will report on the translation of the TEAM technology to a finer feature size process, resulting in a sensor with higher spatial resolution and superior radiation tolerance currently serving as the baseline for a commercial camera system.

Abstract: This paper presents the characterization of a CMOS monolithic pixel sensor prototype optimized for direct detection in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The sensor was manufactured in a deep-submicron commercial CMOS process and features pixels of 5 μ m pitch. Different pixel architectures have been implemented in the test chip, and the best performing architecture has been selected from a series of tests performed with 300 keV electrons. Irradiation tests to high electron doses have also been performed in order to estimate device lifetime.
