Bone-targeted agents are well-established therapies to reduce the skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastasis. However, the analgesic effect of these medications is still controversial. The objective of this review is to summarize the existing evidence about the use of bone-targeted agents in the treatment of metastatic bone pain, trying to answer to the 10 most commonly asked questions in this matter. To achieve this goal, authors did a research of reviews published between January 2001 and January 2018, using the terms MeSH: “cancer pain” and bisphosphonates. The source used was the PubMed (NLM) database. The search yielded 36 reviews, but only 16 met the inclusion criteria. Even with the introduction of a new class of drugs, bisphosphonates and specially zoledronic acid are the most commonly used drugs in most oncology centers. Bisphosphonates and denosumab appear to be beneficial in preventing skeletal morbidity but their analgesic role and impact on quality of life and survival are not so well established. Abstract

Objective: analyze how nursing professionals express their feelings and reactions at work. Methods: descriptive study of qualitative approach. The research was conducted from July to September 2008 in a public hospital located at the city of Fortaleza, Ceará (Brazil). 22 nursing professional, 10 nurses and 12 technicians, participated in the study. The study was approved by the institution’s Ethics Research Committee. Data collection was made using semi-structured scripts in face-to-face interviews. Results: answers were categorized as follows: meaning of work at the recovery room and post-operatory therapy unit; factors that affect the physical and psychical health of nursing professional, and factors that affect professional performance. Discussion: day-to-day work at intensive care units was assessed as stressful but highly pleasant. Physical suffering, as an expression of workload, became evident as corporal pains. The workplace factors affecting professional performance were the following: lack of materials, noise of equipment and ergonomic factors. Conclusions: Working, at intensive care units, raises a debate that is everything but new, however, it is a warning for the implementation of stress defensive strategies. The study allowed for creating spaces to embrace and listen to nursing professionals with a view to reduce the physical and psychical suffering at work.Objetivo: analizar como los profesionales de enfermería expresan sus sentimientos y reacciones en el trabajo. Métodos: estudio descriptivo de enfoque cualitativo. Se realizó en el período comprendido entre julio y septiembre de 2008 en un hospital público en la ciudad de Fortaleza, Ceará (Brasil). Los participantes fueron 22 profesionales de enfermería: 10 enfermeras y 12 técnicos. El estudio fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética en Investigación de la institución. Para recabar la información, utilizamos entrevistas individuales con un guión semiestructurado. Resultados: las respuestas se dividieron en las siguientes categorías: significado de trabajo en la sala de recuperación y unidad de terapia posoperatoria; factores que interfirieron en la salud física y psíquica de los profesionales de enfermería y factores que influyeron en el desempeño profesional. Discusiones: la cotidianidad del trabajo en terapia intensiva fue valorada como un trabajo estresante, pero complaciente. El sufrimiento físico, expresado en la carga laboral, se evidenciaba por los dolores en sus cuerpos. Los factores del entorno que influyen en el desempeño profesional fueron: falta de material, ruido de equipos y factores ergonómicos. Conclusiones: El trabajo, en terapia intensiva, abre un debate que no es nuevo, que nos conduce hacia la aplicación de estrategias defensivas al estrés. El estudio permitió crear espacios para atender y escuchar a profesionales de enfermería, con miras a reducir el sufrimiento físico y psíquico en el lugar de trabajo.Objetivo: objetivou-se analisar como os profissionais de enfermagem expressam seus sentimentos e reações no trabalho. Métodos: estudo descritivo, de abordagem qualitativa. Foi realizado no período de julho a setembro de 2008 em um hospital público na cidade de Fortaleza, Ceará (Brasil). Os participantes foram 22 profissionais de enfermagem: 10 enfermeiras e 12 técnicos. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da instituição. Para a coleta das informações, utilizamos entrevistas individuais, com roteiro semiestruturado. Resultados: as respostas foram categorizadas em: significado do trabalho na sala de recuperação e unidade de terapia pós-operatória; fatores que interferiram na saúde física e psíquica dos profissionais de enfermagem e fatores que influenciaram no desempenho profissional. Discussões: o cotidiano do trabalho na terapia intensiva foi avaliado como estressante, mas prazeroso. O sofrimento físico, expresso pela carga de trabalho, foi relatado pelas dores em seus corpos. Os fatores do ambiente que influenciam no desempenho profissional foram: falta de material, barulho dos equipamentos e fatores ergonômicos. Conclusões: O trabalho, em terapia intensiva, suscita um debate que não é novo, mas desperta para a implementação de estratégias defensivas ao estresse. O estudo possibilitou criarmos espaços para acolhimento e escuta dos profissionais de enfermagem, com vistas à redução do sofrimento físico e psíquico no trabalho.

9. Understanding Reentrance in Frustrated Magnets: the Case of the Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ Pyrochlore

Abstract

Reentrance, the return of a system from an ordered phase to a previously encountered less-ordered one as a controlled parameter is continuously varied, is a recurring theme found in disparate physical systems, from condensed matter to black holes. While diverse in its many incarnations and generally unsuspected, the cause of reentrance at the microscopic level is often not investigated thoroughly. Here, through detailed characterization and theoretical modeling, we uncover the microscopic mechanism behind reentrance in the strongly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$. Taking advantage of the recent advance in rare earth stannate single crystal synthesis, we use heat capacity measurements to expose that Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ exhibits multiple instances of reentrance in its magnetic field $B$ vs. temperature $T$ phase diagram for magnetic fields along three cubic high symmetry directions. Through classical Monte Carlo simulations, mean field theory and classical linear spin-wave expansions, we argue that the origins of the multiple occurrences of reentrance observed in Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ are linked to soft modes. Depending on the field direction, these arise either from a direct $T=0$ competition between the field-evolved ground states, or from a field-induced enhancement of the competition with a distinct zero-field antiferromagnetic phase. In both scenarios, the phase competition enhances thermal fluctuations which entropically stabilize a specific ordered phase. This results in an increased transition temperature for certain field values and thus the reentrant behavior. Our work represents a detailed examination into the mechanisms responsible for reentrance in a frustrated magnet and may serve as a template for the interpretation of reentrant phenomena in other physical systems., Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Large amounts of deep optical images will be available in the near future, allowing statistically significant studies of low surface brightness structures such as intracluster light (ICL) in galaxy clusters. The detection of these structures requires efficient algorithms dedicated to this task, where traditional methods suffer difficulties. We present our new Detection Algorithm with Wavelets for Intracluster light Studies (DAWIS), developed and optimised for the detection of low surface brightness sources in images, in particular (but not limited to) ICL. DAWIS follows a multiresolution vision based on wavelet representation to detect sources, embedded in an iterative procedure called synthesis-by-analysis approach to restore the complete unmasked light distribution of these sources with very good quality. The algorithm is built so sources can be classified based on criteria depending on the analysis goal; we display in this work the case of ICL detection and the measurement of ICL fractions. We test the efficiency of DAWIS on 270 mock images of galaxy clusters with various ICL profiles and compare its efficiency to more traditional ICL detection methods such as the surface brightness threshold method. We also run DAWIS on a real galaxy cluster image, and compare the output to results obtained with previous multiscale analysis algorithms. We find in simulations that in average DAWIS is able to disentangle galaxy light from ICL more efficiently, and to detect a greater quantity of ICL flux due to the way it handles sky background noise. We also show that the ICL fraction, a metric used on a regular basis to characterise ICL, is subject to several measurement biases both on galaxies and ICL fluxes. In the real galaxy cluster image, DAWIS detects a faint and extended source with an absolute magnitude two orders brighter than previous multiscale methods., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The spin S=$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention, since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions and strong Hund's coupling in transition metal cations. The S=1 Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions are generated from superexchange paths. Taking into account the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg term from direct-exchange paths, the Kitaev interaction dominates the physics of S=1 system. Using exact diagonalization technique, we show a finite regime of S=1 spin liquid in the presence of the Heisenberg interaction. Abstract

A measurement of the CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 mu+ mu- decays is presented, based on 1.0fb-1 of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011. The measurement is performed in six bins of invariant mass squared of the mu+ mu- pair, excluding the J/psi and psi(2S) resonance regions. Production and detection asymmetries are removed using the B0 -> J/Psi K*0 decay as a control mode. The integrated CP asymmetry is found to be -0.072 +- 0.040 (stat.) +- 0.005 (syst.), consistent with the Standard Model., Comment: 16 pages including author list, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

A discovery of the rare decay $B^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ is presented. This decay is observed for the first time, with 5.2 $\sigma$ significance. The observation is made using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. The measured branching fraction is (2.3 $\pm$ 0.6 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.1 (syst.))$\times 10^{-8}$, and the ratio of the $B^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow \K^{+} \mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ branching fractions is measured to be 0.053 $\pm$ 0.014 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.001 (syst.)., Comment: 20 pages (including authorlist), 8 figures. Abstract

First evidence of the $B^0\to J/\psi\omega$ decay is found and the $B_{s}^0\to J/\psi\eta$ and $B_{s}^0\to J/\psi\eta^{\prime}$ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the $\mathrm{B}^0\to J/\psi\rho^0$ decay: $$\frac{Br(B^0\to J/\psi\omega)}{Br(B^0\to J/\psi\rho^0)} = 0.89 \pm0.19(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)$$ $$\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta)}{Br(B^0\to J/\psi\rho^0)} = 14.0 \pm 1.2(stat)^{+1.1}_{-1.5}(syst)^{+1.1}_{-1.0}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$$ $$\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta^{\prime})}{Br(B^0\to J/\psi\rho^0)} = 12.7\pm1.1(stat)^{+0.5}_{-1.3}(syst)^{+1.0}_{-0.9}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$$ where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of $f_d/f_s$, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B^0_s$ mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of $B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta^{\prime}$ and $B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta$ decays is measured to be $$ \frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta^{\prime})}{Br(B^0_s\to J/\psi\eta)} = 0.90\pm0.09(stat)^{+0.06}_{-0.02}(syst).$$, Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Evidence for the hadronic annihilation decay mode $B^{+} \to D_s^{+}\phi$ is found with greater than $3\sigma$ significance. The branching fraction and \CP asymmetry are measured to be \mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}\phi) &=& (1.87^{+1.25}_{-0.73}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.19 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.32 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-6}, \mathcal{A}_{CP}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}\phi) &=& -0.01 \pm 0.41 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03 ({\rm syst}). The last uncertainty on $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}\phi)$ is from the branching fractions of the $B^+ \to D_s^+ \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0$ normalization mode and intermediate resonance decays. Upper limits are also set for the branching fractions of the related decay modes $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} K^{*0}$, $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em K}{}^{*0}$ and ${B_c^{+} \to D^{+}_{s}\phi}$, including the result ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to D^+ K^{*0})} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6}$ at the 90% credibility level., Comment: 19 Pages, 3 figures and 4 tables

Abstract

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ K^-$, is performed to measure the CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$ which are sensitive to the CKM angle $\gamma$. The analysis exploits 1.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$, $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $\gamma = (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$, with a second solution at $\gamma \to \gamma + 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes., Comment: 26 pages,7 figures; this revision with additional author information uploaded

Abstract

Measurements of $B_c^+$ production and mass are performed with the decay mode $B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+$ using 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of the production cross-section times branching fraction between the $B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+$ and the $B^+ \to J/\psi K^+$ decays is measured to be $(0.68 \pm 0.10\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.03\,({\rm syst.}) \pm 0.05\,({\rm lifetime}))$% for $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons with transverse momenta $p_{\rm T}>4 $GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidities $2.5<\eta<4.5$. The $B_c^+$ mass is directly measured to be $6273.7 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 1.6 \,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$, and the measured mass difference with respect to the $B^+$ meson is $M(B_c^+)-M(B^+) = 994.6 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6\,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$., Comment: 14 pages including author list, 3 figures. v3, corrected the eaten "%" in the production ratio, only affects the arXiv abstract

Abstract

The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ are studied with a dataset corresponding to $1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment. The angular distribution is measured in bins of dimuon invariant mass squared and found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Integrating the differential branching fraction over the full dimuon invariant mass range yields a total branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) = (4.36 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-7}$. These measurements are the most precise to date of the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay., Comment: 17 pages including author list, 4 figures
