Cinnamaldehyde is a natural product with anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory properties, known to regulate host responses to bacterial stimuli. This study aimed to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde on ligature-induced periodontitis in rats, and its impact on the modulation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Male Wistar rats were assigned into three groups:i) control: no ligature + vehicle; ii) ligature: ligature + vehicle; and iii) ligature + cinnamaldehyde (50 mg/kg); all treatments by daily oral gavage. After 14 days of induced periodontitis, the hemimandibles were collected for bone loss evaluation. The gingival levels of IL-1β, MMP-9 and iNOS mRNA were evaluated. Nitric oxide (NO) was measured in both rat saliva and plasma. PBMC were stimulated with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) in the presence or absence of cinnamaldehyde (5, 20 e 40 µM), and cytokine production was quantified in cell supernatant. Proliferating lymphocytes were taken for flow cytometer reading, while culture supernatants were used for IFN-γ and IL-10 assessment. The ligature group had both increased alveolar bone loss and gingival expression of IL-1β, MMP-9 and iNOS compared to the control group. All parameters were attenuated by cinnamaldehyde treatment. Lower salivary but not plasma NO was detected in the cinnamaldehyde compared to the ligature group. Aa-stimulated PBMCs treated with cinnamaldehyde produced less IL-1β; the compound also attenuated lymphocyte proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, as well as cell IL-10 production. The efficiency of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the recalcitrant organic pollutants degradation has been frequently reported. However, some disadvantages such as low hydraulic conductivity, rapid passivation and consequent loss of reactivity have motivated researchers to study immobilized forms. In this work, calcium alginate beads incorporated with nZVI were prepared, characterized and applied in a catalytic ozonation system of Reactive Red 195 dye (RR195). In order to avoid shearing the calcium alginate beads, an Air lift reactor operated with Air/O 3 cycles in an 8 mg L -1 concentration was used. The RR195 treatability tests conducted with a dye concentration of 25 mg L -1 , 50 g L -1 of nZVI-Alg beads and an Air/O 3 feed flow of 1 L min -1 , revealed significant process efficiency, which was not limited only to the dye discoloration. Total discoloration levels were observed in 30 min of treatment and reductions in 97 % of organic matter in 90 min of treatment, measured through the chemical oxygen demand. The typical absorptions of aromatic compounds reduction (λ max =290 nm) and the acute toxicity reduction (Artemia Saline bioassay), contribute to the Alg-nZVI/O 3 system potential for the application in the treatment of liquid effluents contaminated with dyes., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The increasing use of pharmaceutical products also increases their release in aquatic environment. These contaminants are considered emerging pollutants, and induce adverse ecological and human health effects. The antidiabetic metformin is one example that has been detected in the aquatic environment at unusual concentrations. This fact indicates that conventional wastewater treatment is inefficient on eliminating this compound. Here we show that metformin can be effectively removed from water by photocatalysis. We found the optimised conditions for pH and concentration of catalyst on the photocatalytic process. TiO 2 and TiO 2 -ZrO 2 were successful in oxidising metformin under UV radiation following a pseudo-first order kinetics. Intermediates of metformin photodegradation appeared after photocatalytic treatment. Posterior tibial tendinopathy (PTT) can lead to acquired flatfoot in adults. Many patients develop PTT without any identifiable risk factors. Molecular changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) polymorphism may influence the risk of developing PTT. We aim to investigate the association between matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and (MMP-8) gene polymorphisms with changes in collagen I, III and V in PTT. A case-control study with 22 patients and 5 controls was performed. The MMP-1 (2G/2G) and MMP-8 (T/T) genotypes were determined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Tendon specimens were evaluated by a histologic semiquantitative score, immunofluorescence and histomorphometry for collagen I, III and V. Tendon specimens from PTT demonstrated marked distortion of the architecture with necrosis, large basophilic areas with disruption of the normal linear orientation of collagen bundles, infiltration of inflammatory cells, dystrophic calcification and ossification. Under immunofluorescence, PTT tendon specimens showed weak green fluorescence and diffuse distribution of collagen I fibers, but strong fluorescence of collagen III and V. The collagen I fibers were significantly decreased whereas an increase of collagen III and V were found in PTT compared to control groups. In addition, PTT group presented a significant association with MMP-1 and MMP-8 gene polymorphisms. Patients with PTT matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and (MMP-8) gene polymorphisms presented an increase of the collagen III and V ratio, suggesting that the higher proportion in degenerated tendons could contribute to a decrease in the mechanical resistance of the tissue. Still, functional and association studies are needed to elucidate evident roles of MMPs in PTT.

Calcium titanate zirconate, Ca(Ti (1-x) Zr x )O 3 (CZT), powders have been synthesised by the polymeric precursor method. The structural analysis of the CZT powders was monitored by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and textural analysis. The photocatalytic properties were evaluated by methylene blue (MB) decomposition and real textile wastewater (RTW) combined treatment (coagulation/flocculation/photocatalysis). Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of RTW was successfully reduced from 6195 mg L -1 (untreated) to 662 mg L -1 after coagulation/flocculation with a tannin-based coagulant (Tanfloc®) and finally to 471 mg L -1 after combined treatment (coagulation/flocculation/photocatalysis) applying ultraviolet radiation and CaTiO 3 as photocatalyst.
