Although a few historians have discussed the influence of Peronism in Chile, research has been guided mostly by diplomatic studies and political history, which, though important, are less convincing for historians interested in logics of media representation, particularly from the satirical press. This article explores visual representations of Argentina’s president Juan Perón (1946–1955) in the Chilean magazine Topaze. By discussing and contextualizing a series of images produced by Chilean cartoonists, this study provides new insights into the important role played by the press in shaping anti-Peronist sensibilities and discrediting Perón within Chilean domestic politics. Studying the impact of Peronism in the region—particularly in neighboring countries such as Chile—is useful for thinking about Peronism as a transnational phenomenon with multiple meanings outside Argentina.

Este ensayo sostiene que la comprensión de la relevancia histórica del 17 de Octubre, mito de origen del peronismo, gana en profundidad cuando el análisis es colocado en un marco temporal más amplio que el que predomina en las reconstrucciones habituales de ese evento. En particular, discute la muy extendida idea de que esa jornada crucial en la historia política argentina supuso una novedad radical en las formas de expresión política popular. Sugiere que ese modo de aproximación ignora una larga historia previa de participación de las clases subalternas en la esfera pública y, además, no hace plena justicia a la complejidad del fenómeno de construcción del lazo político entre Perón y sus seguidores, que debe ser explorado con una perspectiva de más largo plazo.

The aim of the article is to analyze the representations about Stroessner and his government in the Brazilian newspaper O Globo between the Paraguayan dictator presidential inauguration in August 1954 and the exile of Argentine president Juan Domingo Perón in Paraguay between October 2nd and November 2nd, 1955. Perón's exile aroused the interest of the international press and led O Globo to analyze Stroessner based on the anti-Peronism that existed in the Brazilian liberal press. For the Paraguayan opposition, it was an opportunity to denounce the authoritarianism that exists in the country. The article proposes a reading of the Stroessner dictatorship from a transnational perspective. Furthermore, it points to the existence of questions about Stroessner in the Brazilian press before the deepening of Brazil-Paraguay relations during the government of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1961). The 1970s was a critical decade for Argentina which experienced a deep political, social, and economic crisis, an escalating armed conflict involving guerilla movements and reprisals by right-wing groups, and a coup d'etat which in the words of the official Commission set up after the return of democracy in 1983 was "the most savage tragedy of Argentine history". The decade left profound fissures which are reflected in contemporary political debate and which impact on the country's capacity to create the consensus needed to support essential structural change. The legacy of that decade was evident again in the 2023 Presidential election triggered by statements by Vice President Victoria Villaruel seen by some as excusing the excesses of the military dictatorship. Nonetheless, the 1970s was also the decade that led to the consolidation of democracy and acceptance of the inviolability of fundamental rights, the absence of which had permitted the level of State repression and violent atrocities that took place. La present investigació pretén donar a conèixer una part de la història més desconeguda d’una col·lecció de renom: la col·lecció Cambó. El seu propietari, l’empresari i polític català Francesc Cambó, en la seva darrera voluntat, en va llegar una part important a la Ciutat Comtal. Gràcies a la documentació conservada a l’arxiu del Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, hem pogut resseguir amb detall les vicissituds del camí de tornada d’una part de les obres d’aquesta col·lecció, des de l’altra banda de l’Atlàntic fins a Barcelona. Les tenses relacions polítiques que existien en aquell moment entre l’Argentina i Espanya van provocar que els quadres haguessin de sortir de Buenos Aires de forma clandestina, amagats entre els mobles i els objectes personals d’un membre de l’ambaixada espanyola.

Este artículo analiza la polarización política en Argentina durante los gobiernos peronistas entre 1946 y 1955. Identificamos los temas que dividieron la opinión pública a partir de referencias documentales y bibliográficas que tratan de las políticas de gobierno y la relación del gobierno con los medios de comunicación. Para ilustrar los temas polarizadores, compilamos tapas del diario Clarín del mismo período. Metodológicamente, para la reconstrucción del contexto político y mediático, trabajamos con la propuesta de “negociación de las escenas mediáticas” (Schuliaquer, 2017, 2020). Para identificar los temas que dividieron la opinión pública, usamos el concepto de “tópicos disparadores” (Baldassarri, Bearman, & Baldassarri, 2016). Las dicotomías que operaron para la polarización política en este momento en Argentina eran agricultura/industria, elite/clase trabajadora y popular, iglesia/estado, capital nacional/capital extranjero y libertad/autoridad estatal.

The following article aims to compare the religious representations in the journals Las Bases and El Caudillo between 1973 and 1975. Based on qualitative analysis, it is argued that the publications contained the predominant religious representations of the right-wing Peronists during the third government of Perón. Religious representations, especially the ideas about the Catholic Church and Catholicism, were of considerable importance in defining authentic Peronist identity. While Las Bases, as the official journal of the Peronist movement, maintained an institutional and diplomatic discourse, El Caudillo, linked to Alianza Argentina Anticomunista, reproduced a more plebeian and aggressive discourse. It can be concluded that the ideas about religion functioned as internal and external borders delineating the hypothetical correct interpretation of Perón's legacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

“Pacto Social” es el nombre con el que popularmente se conoció el programa económico-social del tercer gobierno peronista. Se trataba de un esquema estructurado alrededor de instancias de diálogo tripartito con participación de organizaciones corporativas y del Estado, en el que subyacían mecanismos de intercambio político. El presente artículo aborda los desplazamientos de las posturas de Montoneros ante este programa. Estos serán identificados a partir del análisis de las publicaciones y documentos de la organización, las manifestaciones de sus referentes ante la prensa, y otros testimonios de los actores, priorizando las valoraciones económicas, pero atendiendo también a las apreciaciones político-sociales. La hipótesis central de este trabajo es que, lejos de un rechazo total, la organización comenzó este proceso con manifestaciones ambiguas que le permitían apoyar ciertos aspectos económico-políticos, para avanzar luego hacia un rechazo profundo al plan, a partir de la impugnación de los términos de intercambio político que implicaba.

La tesis central del presente trabajo consiste en afirmar que el peronismo es la traducción del fascismo italiano en la política argentina, entendiendo que la esencia del fascismo está inspirada en la filosofía actualista del pensador italiano Giovanni Gentile. Asimismo, este actualismo es el producto de la disociación operada por el mismo filósofo, hacia fines del siglo XIX, entre materialismo y dialéctica. La metodología de estudio empleada es la transpolítica por cuanto se propone examinar al fenómeno del peronismo desde una rigurosa problemática filosófica con el fin de aprehender su esencia propia. El texto principal elegido para el referido examen, sin excluir otros, es la Conferencia que Perón diera en el Congreso Nacional de Filosofía, celebrado en Mendoza (República Argentina) en 1949, y que más adelante va a publicarse bajo el título de La Comunidad organizada.

How can leaders recover public trust and approval when government performance is low? We argue politicians use speeches evoking images of deceased predecessors to reactivate support temporarily. This distracts supporters from the poor performance and arouses empathy and nostalgia among them, causing them to perceive the current leader more favorably. We test this argument by scraping for all speeches by Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. We identify all instances when she referenced Juan Perón—the charismatic founder of the Justice Party. We find that as Kirchner's approval rating decreases, the number of Perón references increases. To identify the causal mechanism and to ensure that endogeneity is not a concern, we employ text analysis and a natural experiment—courtesy of LAPOP. The results provide robust evidence that leaders reference their dead predecessors to evoke positive feelings. However, while doing so can improve public opinion, the effects manifest only in the short term and among supporters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Military regime that took power in 1966, led by General Juan Carlos Onganía, aimed at restructuring the economy while putting to an end all political activities. As part of its national plan committed to anticommunism, the regime took over the national universities, which were believed to be loci of communist activities. In 1969, however, a series of popular rebellions, followed by a steady increase of urban guerrilla activities, weakened the military government. By 1970, its only option was to restore democracy and, if possible, prevent Juan Perón from winning the elections. In this context, the presidential term inaugurated by General Agustin Lanusse in 1971 signalled a shift not only in national politics, but also in university life, where the policies shifted from mere repression to an expansion of the system. This article analyses this process, stressing the importance of youth, and especially university students, in the new political scenario: as the rise of armed organizations was linked to the presence of youth, this social actor gained political momentum. Hence, the government sought to address it from several courses of action. Among them, a new university policy, which lead to a huge restructuring of the public system, stood out. Comparison of supine and prone positioning methods on the amount of bleeding in percutaneous renal stone removal with spinal anesthesia Introduction: In the decades following the introduction of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), urology specialists have proposed modifications to improve the safety and efficacy of this procedure. The present study aimed to compare the two methods of supine and prone positioning with different doses of Marcaine on the amount of hemorrhage in percutaneous renal stone removal with spinal anesthesia. Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 200 patients (50 patients each) between the ages of 20-60 years who had Class I and II Anesthesia (ASA) and were candidates for Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy Surgery in peimanieh Hospital in 1977, done. Patients were divided into four groups (fentanyl-Marcaine and Marcaine) in supine and prone. Bleeding rate was measured in each group. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21 and descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the supine and prone positioning methods with different doses of Marcaine in terms of age (p = 0.390). The two methods of supine and prone positioning were also matched by different doses of Marcaine in terms of sex and class of anesthesia. In group A, 32% of patients had 50 cc and 22% had 100 cc.

A lo largo de estas páginas abordaremos los procesos de reconfiguración identitaria al interior de la Unión Cívica Radical a partir de la Revolución de junio de 1943 y la emergencia de Perón en la escena política nacional. Desde una sociología de las identidades políticas, analizaremos los modos en que las distintas fracciones radicales redefinieron los límites de su identidad recuperando la tradición yrigoyenista y resignificando la propia heredad. El objetivo del trabajo consiste en repensar el antagonismo peronismo-antiperonismo como campos sedimentados y de límites difusos sobre los que operan articulaciones discusivas diversas que se entremezclan y resignifican, antes que como espacios identitarios perfectamente homogéneos y enfrentados entre sí.

The third government of Juan Domingo Perón in Argentina presented various facets, but the studies on it mostly emphasized the violence between the youth and orthodox faction of the movement. One of those aspects on which little has been addressed is the implementation by the State of a sports policy as a necessary complement to the comprehensive education that citizens should have. This way of understanding sport, as a state authority, was the one that had prevailed in the first two Peronist presidencies between 1946 and 1955. It was during that period that infrastructure was created, children's tournaments and world championships were carried out. On his return to the post of president, Perón thought that a return to those sports promotion policies would put a stop to youth violence that was experienced on a daily basis. It was for this reason that he was in charge of expressing it explicitly in various speeches that he gave between January and May 1974. Those speeches sought to associate the high levels of existing violence with the lack of state policies to promote sport such the situation after his dismissal in 1955.

En este artículo se estudia la posición editorial de la revista Cuestionario ante el proceso político que desembocó en la tercera presidencia de Perón. En particular, se analiza su pensamiento en torno a temas y acontecimientos clave del momento: el conflicto interno en el peronismo, el crecimiento de la violencia política, el proyecto político de Perón en torno a la “unidad nacional”, su rol como líder y el escenario abierto ante su desaparición física. Bajo la dirección del periodista Rodolfo Terragno, el mensuario Cuestionario se lanzó al público en mayo de 1973 y su publicación se extendió hasta junio de 1976. Durante este tiempo se destacó por ofrecer un espacio para el debate de ideas, un pensamiento editorial con cierta pretensión de autonomía de los sectores políticos en pugna y una prédica de izquierda moderada que, en el contexto de 1973-1974, planteará la democratización de las prácticas políticas y la actualización doctrinaria del peronismo como herramientas fundamentales para resolver los dilemas de la hora.

In this article we address the local relations maintained by Juan Domingo Perón during his years of exile in Madrid. Apart from his contacts with Argentinean supporters and politicians, who fluctuated over more than a decade but which proved effective for his return in 1973, the former president organized his life by agreeing to deal with those who ideologically shown him more affinity: from the historical Francoists and the Falangist, the Third World positions supporters to all those who expressed criticism to the US and Imperialism. Surrounded by the popularity of the cereal supply during his administration and the international support granted during his government, the attendance of some circles - such as journalists close to Falangism and the military imbued with the spirit of July 18 - served Peron for his mediate and immediate purposes, however covered with distrust the links with the sectors that were the prevalent ones in the Francisco Franco’s regime in the years 60, officials that managed the Spanish developmentism. To those Spanish technocract, of catholic filiation, but liberal, atlantistas and partial to the foreign investments, Latin America was a space of economic expansion, where the Argentina was a square of privileged attention, despite it was governed by military, Perón or by his movement.

Dentro del campo de lo que se conoce como peronismo combativo, interesa distinguir la experiencia de las FAP (Fuerzas Armadas Peronistas). El objetivo de este estudio es analizar las circunstancias y pormenores que definieron la relación de esta organización armada con el conjunto del peronismo combativo, con el resto del movimiento justicialista, y con Perón, en el marco de la particular coyuntura política de la Argentina de fines de la década del ‘60 y principios de la del ´70. La hipótesis principal que aquí se plantea, sugiere que buena parte de los prolegómenos que atraviesan las FAP, muchas de sus decisiones tácticas y estratégicas, algunas de sus escisiones y sus fuertes disputas internas, como así también sus percepciones sobre la coyuntura política y sobre el papel que desempeñan Perón y el movimiento en su conjunto, están condicionados por la posición más favorable que ostentan los Montoneros dentro del campo particular del peronismo combativo.

El general Luis Cesar Perlinger y el coronel Juan Domingo Perón personificaron un enfrentamiento en los años 1943 y 1944 puertas adentro de las Fuerzas Armadas Argentinas, luego de haber sido aliados dentro de la Logia que protagonizaría ese período: el GOU. Sus caminos comenzaron a distanciarse cuando las posturas que los elencos que ambos representaban empezaron a evidenciar sus intenciones y a plasmarlos en acciones consecuentes con ellas. Los dos puntos de desencuentro de mayor relevancia serán la relación que debería existir entre las Fuerzas Armadas y la sociedad civil, por un lado, y por otro las distintas líneas del fascismo que pretendían llevar a la práctica, y los cómo hacerlo. El precedente de la Logia San Martín, los cargos a ocupar dentro del gobierno de facto de 1943, los elencos, el GOU, las reacciones ante la tragedia de San Juan, la visión e intentos de intervención desde el exterior, las tensiones y negociaciones de cara a la cobertura del Ministerio de Guerra, y posteriormente las definiciones en torno a la vicepresidencia.

El presente trabajo es parte de una tesina de Licenciatura en Historia de la Universidad Nacional de La Matanza. Ante los subsistentes avatares que condicionan y dificultan el desempeño de la economía argentina, se planteó la posibilidad de revisar cuales fueron los elementos y objetivos que caracterizaron al proyecto económico de José Ber Gelbard, un modelo económico que no contó con el beneplácito de los sectores que acostumbraron a resultar favorecidos con las medidas gubernamentales implementadas,. La experiencia demostró que cuanta mayor aprobación de estos sectores el modelo alcanzó, mayores fueron las posibilidades de empobrecimiento y postergación de los sectores populares. Por consiguiente, puede aventurarse que cuanto mayor sea el respaldo popular, más auspicioso puede ser el resultado de un proyecto heterodoxo. Estos ya de por sí son temas que revisten tal interés que habilitan a futuras investigaciones. Se investigó sobre la pertinencia y dificultades en la implementación del Plan Trienal, o en algunas de sus medidas puntuales, atendiéndose a las distintas esferas que conforman el sistema económico argentino. El estudio se centró en el contexto, los antecedentes, y las referencias ideológicas que impregnaron sus supuestos. Se consideró que su análisis podría permitir tanto el rescate de alguno de éstos si se considerasen acertados, como identificar lo inadecuado de la ejecución de aquellos que se prefiguran como equívocos, inviables, u obsoletos.

Juan Domingo Perón and Alberto Methol Ferré have built their thinking and political praxis based on the ideas of a geopolitics of the early twentieth century, which especially highlighted the issue of continentality. Perón was, in a context of industrialization, the main political precursor of the continental unity; whereas Methol Ferré gave to the notion of industrial Continental State a fundamental heuristic role. Based on the texts of both authors, this paper revisits the category of Continental State in the Metholian thought, highlighting one of the fundamental sources of inspiration for its development in the ideas and postulates of Perón. Resumen Juan Domingo Perón y Alberto Methol Ferré han construido su pensamiento y su praxis política a partir de las ideas de la geopolítica de inicios del siglo XX, que destaca especialmente la cuestión de la continentalidad. Perón fue, en un contexto de industrialización, el principal precursor político de la unidad continental; mientras que Methol Ferré otorgó a la noción de Estado Continental industrial un papel heurístico fundamental. Por lo tanto, con base en textos señalados de ambos autores, en este trabajo se revisita la categoría de Estado Continental en el pensamiento metholiano, destacando una de las fuentes fundamentales de inspiración para su desarrollo en el pensamiento y los postulados de Perón. Este artí­culo analiza el posicionamiento editorial de la revista Extra dirigida por Bernardo Neustadt frente al conflicto interno en el peronismo desde la asunción de Héctor Cámpora a la presidencia en mayo de 1973 hasta el fallecimiento del entonces presidente Juan Domingo Perón en julio de 1974. El objetivo es analizar discursivamente el tratamiento que dio a estas disputas, a la creciente radicalización polí­tica de sus facciones y al proceso de “depuración ideológica” contra su sector revolucionario de izquierda desde fines de 1973. El trabajo concluye que Extra intentó posicionarse como representante del “centro polí­tico”, destacando el rol de Perón como eje para la “unidad nacional” y criticando a los sectores revolucionarios de la izquierda peronista.

This paper will study the communist leader Fernando Nadra's political stances with respect to Perón's third government and Héctor José Cámpora's previous presidency. Furthermore, on the basis of Nadra's editorial notes published in the oficial argentinian communist weekly, Nuestra Palabra, this work will focus in his conceptualization of violence in the years 1973 and 1974. This article explores the relationship between Perón and Montoneros between 1970 and 1972. First, it analyzes Perón's repertoire of new concepts since 1967, focusing on the central notion of national socialism. Secondly, it analyzes initiatives and cultural devices elaborated by sectors of the Peronist left that contributed to the construction and diffusion of an imaginary that represented Perón as a revolutionary leader. Third, it analyzes the use that Montoneros made of those new concepts developed by Perón and the real and symbolic links that the organization established with the leader. Finally, it recovers the criticisms that existed in this period within the montonera militancy regarding those images built on the leader.

El trabajo examina las circunstancias que rodearon a la introducción y el uso, en el contexto peronista, poco después de 1945, de la voz descamisado(s) descamisadas(s) –existente en romance al menos desde el año 1304, cuando scamiciati era sinónimo de “desnudos”, como se comprueba en un sermón pronunciado en Florencia– y las hesitaciones que el término suscitó en el espíritu del líder del movimiento, en contraste con el entusiasmo de Eva Duarte, su verdadera impulsora. Se consideran, asimismo, las tergiversaciones y manipulaciones ideológicas a las que dio lugar, entre las que figuran matices religiosos e interpretaciones racistas de exaltación de lo supuestamente autóctono y denigración de “lo extranjero” y “contrario a la nacionalidad”. Se analiza también la confusión que existió entre descamisados y pueblo; las imágenes visuales destinadas a exaltar la figura del descamisado y, por último, sus ecos en la guerrilla montonera donde un escuadrón de muerte dependía, según parece, de un periódico que llevaba su nombre.

El presente artículo aborda el posicionamiento político de mujeres identificadas con el antiperonismo que se opusieron al gobierno de Juan Domingo Perón en Argentina. En 1951 Perón fue elegido presidente por segunda vez consecutiva. Ese mismo año las mujeres ejercieron por primera vez sus derechos políticos y fueron electas las primeras legisladoras argentinas. Por un lado, el artículo indaga las críticas que recibieron el gobierno, y en particular Eva Perón, desde la sanción de los derechos políticos femeninos hasta las elecciones de 1951. Por otro lado, analiza la construcción argumentativa que subyace a la caracterización del peronismo como antidemocrático con base en el contexto electoral del ‘51. Finalmente, el artículo aborda los cuestionamientos al rol político de las primeras legisladoras argentinas -todas ellas peronistas- a las cuales se acusó de subsumir sus actuaciones a los mandatos de Perón e ignorar en su función parlamentaria las demandas femeninas.

Juan Domingo Perón remains one of the most important figures of Argentine ́s history of the XX century. A former army colonel, Peron was elected 3 times as president of the republic through popular vote in 1946, 1951 and 1973. He did not come to power through a coup d ́état, as usually happened with army generals in the Latin-American countries at that time. He was the founder of the Labour Party and of the peronist movement and together with his wife Eva Duarte introduced a series of revolutionary reforms aiming at improving the living standards of the workers, thus becoming soon a national myth. Nowadays, the peronist Partido Justicialista is in a deep crisis, but it still remains one of the main Argentinian political forces.

Among the refugees fleeing from the Nazi dictatorship were many artists – including the German-Jewish photographer Grete Stern (1904–1999), who had been trained at the Bauhaus and emigrated to Argentina in 1935/36. In spite of the authoritarian political tendencies, she enjoyed much greater artistic freedom there. During the first two terms of the elected president Juan Domingo Perón (1946–1955), whose main model for strict media control were European fascist regimes but who – because of his social policy – was later also invoked by leftist groups, Stern published a series of photomontages in the magazine Idilio (›Idyll‹). Following an overview of Peronist cultural policy, the focus of this article is the contextualization of these montages, which were published together with a column on dream interpretation. Stern subtly criticized sociocultural injustices of her time, one of her main topics being the relationship between genders. In this field in particular, the Peronist regime boasted in its extensive visual propaganda of having brought about significant changes. ∗ ∗ ∗ Unter denen, die vor der NS-Diktatur flüchteten, waren nicht wenige bildende Künstler/innen – so auch die deutsch-jüdische Bauhausfotografin Grete Stern (1904–1999), die 1935/36 nach Argentinien emigrierte. Während der ersten beiden Amtszeiten des demokratisch gewählten Präsidenten Juan Domingo Perón (1946–1955), der sich vor allem in der staatlichen Kontrolle der Medien an den europäischen Faschismen orientierte, auf den sich wegen seiner Sozialpolitik jedoch auch linksgerichtete Bewegungen beriefen, veröffentlichte Stern in der Zeitschrift »Idilio« (»Idylle«) eine Serie von Fotomontagen. Nach einem Überblick zur peronistischen Kulturpolitik bildet die Einordnung dieser Montagen, die zusammen mit einer Traumdeutungs-Kolumne erschienen, den Schwerpunkt des Aufsatzes. In subtiler Weise kritisierte Stern soziokulturelle Missstände der Zeit. Zu einem ihrer Hauptthemen wurden die Geschlechterbeziehungen – ein Gebiet, auf dem sich das peronistische Regime nicht zuletzt in seiner umfangreichen Bildpropaganda rühmte, tiefgreifende Veränderungen hervorgebracht zu haben.

Comparison of the policies vis-à-vis the press of the classical populist governments of Argentina and Brazil reveals that the populist elites came into conflict with traditional media elites over exclusionary views that modified the contours of the public sphere. Newspapers committed to liberal principles engaged in intransigent struggle with populism, and this struggle created opportunities for new entrepreneurs to form political alliances with these governments to expand their businesses. The relationship between these “mediatized populisms” and the new media entrepreneurs contributed to the patrimonialism that came to characterize the link between the media and Latin American states in subsequent years.Una comparación de las políticas relativas a la prensa por parte de los gobiernos populistas clásicos de Argentina y Brasil muestra que las élites populistas entraron en conflicto con las élites de los medios tradicionales. Dichas desavenencias fueron causadas por puntos de vista excluyentes que alteraban el contorno de la esfera pública. Los periódicos comprometidos con los principios liberales sostuvieron una lucha intransigente con el populismo, lucha que dio la oportunidad a nuevos empresarios de formar alianzas políticas con dichos gobiernos y expandir así sus negocios. La relación entre estos “populismos mediáticos” y los empresarios de los nuevos medios contribuyó al patrimonialismo que asumiría el vínculo entre dichos medios y los Estados latinoamericanos en años subsiguientes.
