Investigations are made by means of temperature-dependent vibrational spectroscopy, the properties of neutral single crystal of C(sub 60) intercalated with biphenyl. The Raman data depict phase transitions in 2P-C(sub 60) in several ways.

Synthetic techniques to isolate general buckminsterfulleride(1-) salts and EPR spectrum of C60- in frozen solution reveal a counterion-dependent anistropy at low temperatures, which is attributed to an ellipsoidal distortion stimulated ion pairing. It agrees with a static Jahn-Teller distortion, and shows that there is a broad isotropic importance signal and a narrower 'spike' in the high-temperature spectrum.

A study was done on the neutral molecular component site along the series of metallic organic-inorganic solvates. The series of single crystals composed of a monoanion which is a hexanuclear chalcohalide rhenium cluster and the neutral guest molecules are dimethylformamide. The compounds possess similar basic structural organization in which conducting organic cation radical slabs are sandwiched by inorganic cluster monoanion layers.

A mild dissolution route is described, starting from neutral graphite and avoiding any kind of sonication that yields large size graphene flakes. The reversible addition of electrons to graphite has provided a simple and clean route to exfoliate and dissolve large graphene flakes and ribbons.

An extensive vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical study of true solutions of unfunctionalized single walled nanotubes (SWNTs) that allows determining the standard redox potentials of individual semiconducting SWNTs as a function of the tube structure is reported. The results for oxidation and reduction potentials together with the Fermi energies can be used to design the electrochemical and electronic devices.

The electrochemical and (ESR) fingerprints of six isomers of [84]fullerene C84 are depicted along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the molecular orbitals (MO) energy levels for ten isomers. Comparisons between calculations and electrochemical data represent a significant amount of synergy between calculated energy levels and experimental redox potentials.

The main routes in preparing homogeneous dispersion of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) consist of end and/or sidewall functionalization, use of surfactants with sonication or high-shear mixing, polymer wrapping of nanotubes, and protonation by superacids. SWNTs form polyelectrolyte salts upon reduction with alkali metals, that are soluble in polar organic solvents without any sonication, use of surfactants, or functionalization forming true thermodynamically stable solutions of naked SWNTs.

Families of well-characterized C60-based materials are investigated using electrocrystallization of high quality single crystals to synthesize C60 and analyze its crystal and molecular structure. EPR, NIR and SQUID magnetic measurements help characterize C60. Crystal structure of ((C6H5)4P)2(C60)(I)x exhibits totally isolated C60 anions in a highly symmetrical environment.

A monomeric ferrous acetylacetonate twist (pyrazolyl)-borate complex is aerobically oxidized to create a new linear trinuclear ferric complex which has mu-oxo bis(mu-acetato) and mu-hydroxo bis(mu-acetato) bridges. The acetylacetonate ligands give rise to the acetate groups. The unequally bridged trimer, examined by Mossbauer, magnetic susceptibility and EPR processes, reveals that the oxo-bridged pair of iron atoms is more important than the electronic organization of the trimer.

A carbon nanotube-based electrode that combines transparency and good conductivity was used for the first time to develop an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) device. It resulted in an excellent material for ECL applications thanks to the very favorable overpotential of amine oxidation that represents the rate-determining step for the signal generation in both research systems and commercial instrumentation. The use of carbon nanotubes resulted in a ten times higher emission efficiency compared with commercial transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. Moreover, application of this material for proof-of-principle ECL imaging was demonstrated, in which micro-beads were used to mimic a real biological sample in order to prove the possibility of obtaining single cell visualization., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
