Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The atomic structure, energy of formation, and electronic states of vacancies in H-passivated Ge nanocrystals are studied by density functional theory (DFT) methods. The competition between quantum self-purification and the free surface relaxations is investigated. The free surfaces of crystals smaller than 2 nm distort the Jahn-Teller relaxation and enhance the reconstruction bonds. This increases the energy splitting of the quantum states and reduces the energy of formation to as low as 1 eV per defect in the smallest nanocrystals. In crystals larger than 2 nm the observed symmetry of the Jahn-Teller distortion matches the symmetry expected for bulk Ge crystals. Near the nanocrystal's surface the vacancy is found to have an energy of formation no larger than 0.5 to 1.4 eV per defect, but a vacancy more than 0.7 nm inside the surface has an energy of formation that is the same as in bulk Ge. No evidence of the self-purification effect is observed; the dominant effect is the free surface relaxations, which allow for the enhanced reconstruction. From the evidence in this paper, it is predicted that for moderate sized Ge nanocrystals a vacancy inside the crystal will behave bulk-like and not interact strongly with the surface, except when it is within 0.7 nm of the surface., Comment: In Press at Phys. - Abstract
This study investigated a seven sessions interaction between a peer-tutor robot and Dutch preschoolers (5 years old) during which the children learned English. We examined whether children's engagement differed when interacting with a tablet and a robot using iconic gestures, with a tablet and a robot using no iconic gestures and with only a tablet. Two engagement types were annotated (task engagement and robot engagement) using a novel coding scheme based on an existing coding scheme used in kindergartens. The findings revealed that children's task engagement dropped over time in all three conditions, consistent with the novelty effect. However, there were no differences between the different conditions for task engagement. Interestingly, robot engagement showed a difference between conditions. Children were more robot engaged when interacting with a robot using iconic gestures than without iconic gestures. Finally, when comparing children's word knowledge with their engagement, we found that both task engagement and robot engagement were positively correlated with children's word retention., QC 20230404

BackgroundTo assess corneal epithelial-thickness (ET) mapping resulting from spectral-domain-optical-coherence-tomography (SD-OCT) by analysing its repeatability and reproducibility and its utility for screening corneal-refractive-surgery (CRS) candidates.MethodsET was measured in 25-sectors by two-operators. Intra-subject-standard-deviation, coefficient-of-repeatability (CoR) and coefficient-of-variability (CoV) were calculated to evaluate repeatability. Reproducibility was evaluated using a Bland–Altman analysis. Scheimpflug-tomography, refraction, visual acuity, and patient history were used to make a decision on eligibility for CRS. After this decision, the surgeon was shown the patient’s ET map and was asked to reconsider his analysis. The percentage of screenings that changed after evaluating the ET maps was determined.ResultsForty-three eyes with normal corneas (CRS-group) and 21 eyes not suitable for CRS (non-CRS-group) were studied. For the CRS-group, CoR ranged from 2.03 (central) to 19.73 μm (outer-inferonasal), with the central-sector showing the highest repeatability (CoV: 1.53–1.80%). For the non-CRS-group, CoR ranged from 3.82 (central-middle-superonasal) to 13.42 μm (middle-inferotemporal), with the inner-superonasal-sector showing the highest repeatability (CoV: 2.86–4.46%). There was no statistically significant difference between operators (p > 0.01). In the CRS-group, the outcomes showed a narrow 95% limits-of-agreement (LoA) for the central-and inner-nasal-sectors (about 4 μm), and wider for the inner-superior, outer-superotemporal and outer-inferonasal (about 10–14 μm). In the non-CRS-group, they were for the outer superonasal (about 4 μm), and for the middle-inferotemporal and outer-temporal (about 10 μm), respectively. Candidacy for CRS changed in 7.82% of patients after evaluation of the ET maps, with all of them screened-out.ConclusionThe SD-OCT provided repeatable and reproducible corneal ET measurements and may alter candidacy for CRS.Clinical trial registrationGerman Clinical Trials Register: https://drks.de/search/en/trial/DRKS00032797, identifier: DRKS00032797.

BackgroundSwept-source optical coherence tomography–based (SS-OCT) biometers have been used in different clinical studies with the aim of assessing the accuracy of the technique, specifically in eyes with dense cataracts. Our objective is to evaluate the axial length acquisition success rates and agreement of two SS-OCT biometers when measuring axial length and biometric parameters in eyes with dense cataracts.Methods46 eyes (46 patients) with dense cataracts (LOCS III grade ≥ 4) were measured 3 consecutive times using the Eyestar 900 and Argos SS-OCT biometers. Keratometry (K1, flat and K2, steep), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW), anterior-chamber-depth (ACD), lens-thickness (LT), and axial length were measured using both biometers. The percentage acquisition success rate and a Bland–Altman analysis to determine the agreement between the biometers were calculated. Corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuity, subjective refraction, and axial length (to assess preoperative axial length accuracy) were measured 1-month post-cataract surgery.ResultsThe mean LOCS III score was 4.37 ± 0.68. The acquisition success rates for both biometers was 100%. There were statistically significant differences between the two SS-OCT biometers for all parameters evaluated (p < 0.05). The mean differences for K1, K2, CCT, WTW, ACD, LT and axial length were 0.106 D, 0.128 D, −6.347 μm, −0.054 mm, 0.095 mm, 0.110 mm, and −0.036 mm, respectively. The mean pre- and post-surgery axial length difference was −0.036 mm for the Eyestar 900 and −0.020 mm for the Argos. This difference was ≤ 0.1 mm in 97.82% of eyes with the Eyestar 900 and in 100% of eyes with the Argos.ConclusionSS-OCT biometry successfully measures axial length in dense cataracts. The differences between biometers in some parameters may have a clinically significant impact but should be judged individually. The pre- and post-surgery axial length differences for each biometer can be considered clinically negligible and should not affect the IOL power calculation.

Abstract Background To assess clinical outcomes after implanting toric, extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lenses (IOLs) to correct low corneal astigmatism in eyes with cataracts. Methods 47 eyes were implanted with the AcrySof IQ Vivity Toric DFT215 IOL. Main outcome measures were refractive error, monocular uncorrected and corrected distance (UDVA/CDVA), uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate (UIVA/DCIVA), and uncorrected near and distance-corrected near (UNVA/DCNVA) visual acuities, monocular defocus curve, rotational stability, and IOLSAT and QUVID questionnaires. Patients were assessed at 3 months postsurgery. Results All eyes had a postoperative spherical equivalent (SE) within ± 0.50 D and 97.87% (n = 46) had a refractive cylinder ≤ 0.50 D. The mean SE and refractive cylinder were − 0.10 ± 0.17 D and − 0.16 ± 0.24 D, respectively. The CDVA was ≥ 20/25 and ≥ 20/32 in 95.74% (n = 45) and 97.87% (n = 46) of eyes, respectively. The DCIVA was ≥ 20/32 in 85.11% (n = 40) of eyes and the DCNVA was ≥ 20/40 in 74.47% (n = 35). The mean values of CDVA, DCIVA, and DCNVA were − 0.02 ± 0.08, 0.14 ± 0.09, and 0.23 ± 0.12 logMAR, respectively. The defocus curve revealed good visual acuity at far and intermediate distances with a depth-of-focus of about 1.75 D. IOL rotation was 0.74 ± 1.13 degrees and all eyes had a rotation of less than 5 degrees. Patients reported either good or very good postoperative vision without eyeglasses under bright-light-conditions at distance (87.80%, 36/41) and intermediate distance (92.68%, 38/41). Between about 63.83%–72.34% (30–34) of patients reported no starburst, halos, or glare, or if experienced, were not bothersome. Conclusions The Vivity toric IOL implanted in eyes with low-astigmatism provides accurate refractive outcomes, good visual acuity at different distances and excellent rotational stability. Early individual differences in executive functions (EFs) are predictive of a range of developmental outcomes. However, despite the importance of EFs, little is known about the processes underlying these early individual differences. Therefore, we investigated the association between 14-month-old infants’ attention on a reaching version of the A-not-B task and task success. We hypothesized that both strategic focused attention (measured as percentage looking time towards the correct location during delay) and attentional flexibility (measured as number of looks per second to available stimuli during delay) would relate positively to task performance. Infants performed the A-not-B task wearing a head-mounted eye tracker (N = 24). Results were trial-dependent and partially supported the hypotheses: (1) infants who were better able to flexibly shift attention between available stimuli on the first pre-switch trial showed better task performance overall; and (2) strategic focused attention to the hiding location during the first switch trial was positively related to performance on that particular trial only (trend-level effect). Thus, the study shows preliminary evidence that particularly attentional flexibility is a key factor underlying EF performance in young children. Advantages and challenges of working with head-mounted eye tracking in infants are discussed.

There is increasing awareness that the physical environment plays a critical role in young children's cognitive and social development, by offering opportunities for exploration and interaction. In this article a narrative review is presented of 19 studies, published between 1987 and 2017, into the relation between spatial characteristics of the indoor play environment of center-based early childhood care and education settings and children's social and cognitive behavior and development. Studies involved children between six months and six years of age. Several studies reported consistent, interesting outcomes. A layout with an open-zoned arrangement, enabling children to keep eye contact with the caregiver was found to stimulate children to use the space more fully. Designated activity areas for activities such as pretend play and construction elicited different types of social and cognitive behaviors. However, the number of studies is small, and very diverse, both in content and in methodology. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Contains fulltext : 227090.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Culture influences the way parents shape children's environment. Two studies examined cross-cultural differences in parental practices related to motor development in Israel and the Netherlands. In the first study, 198 Dutch and 206 Israeli parents of infants aged 1-7.5 months completed questionnaires measuring parental practices and beliefs regarding motor development. In the second study, 30 Dutch and 30 Israeli parents completed the same questionnaires when their children were 2 and 10 months old. While similarities were found across the cultures, Israeli parents practiced infant prone positioning more. Additionally, Dutch infants spent substantial more time in the playpen. Furthermore, beliefs stressing stimulation and stimulating practices (both more frequent within Israeli parents) predicted better prone skills, shown by the Israeli infants. Findings highlight the diversity of parental practices related to infant motor development.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
When children learn to walk they have the possibility to explore their surroundings in a different way. They will cover more distance and the distance between them and their parents will increase. Whereas the child is further away, parents might rely more on distal, verbal communication to regulate their child’s behaviour. However, evidence about possible changes of verbal regulatory responses during the transition from crawling to walking are scarce. The aim of the current study was to examine the change of the verbal regulatory response from parents when their children made the transition from crawling to walking. The hypotheses were that (1) when children were able to walk the parents would use more responses that discouraged or prevented the child’s behaviour and (2) that they would use less responses that encouraged or elicited the child’s behaviour. For this purpose a sample of 16 children around the age of 1 year was used. The verbal regulatory response was measured during a natural home-based play interaction between the parent and child. These interactions were videotaped and analysed. Furthermore parental reports were used to measure walking status. Determining walking status created a group of children who were able to walk independently and a group who were only able to crawl. The hypotheses were tested by mixed repeated measures ANOVAs. The children’s age was taken as a covariate in the analyses. Results showed no significant increase in parental verbal discouragement and no significant decrease in parental verbal encouragement. In conclusion no relation was found between the transition from crawling to walking to a change in the parents' verbal regulatory response to their child's behaviour. However, due to the small sample size more research is needed to examine this relationship.

Objective: The focus of this study was to investigate the relations between language skills and internalizing behaviour and the potential moderating effects of gender and negative affect. Method: The data were collected using a convenience sample, in which 84 children participated. To measure the receptive vocabulary and the ability to repeat sentences, children were tested with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-III-NL (PPVT-III-NL) and Litmus- SRT task. The parents filled out the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Children's Behaviour Questionnaire (CBQ) or Temperament in Middle Children Questionnaire (TMCQ) to measure internalizing behaviour and negative affect. Results: This study did not find any relations between language skills and internalizing behaviour. The only relation that was found was between internalizing behaviour and negative affect. This relation between internalizing behaviour and negative affect was expected.

- Abstract
Background. Several studies have indicated that the development of language should be seen in context of interactions between a person’s physical body and the physical world. In line with the embodiment theory, empirical literature indicates that walking independently can cause an increase in social interactions with the environment and especially the interactions with parents. These changes in interactions with parents could promote an increase in language development. Aim. The present study examined the relationship between locomotor status and productive speech with parental responsiveness as a possible mediator. Method. 21 children (53,3% girls, aged 11 to 16 months), participated in the study. Parental responsiveness was established through a coding scheme. In addition, parental questionnaires were administered to determine the locomotor status and the productive speech. Results. No significant results were found in either of the relationships. Locomotor status did not predict higher levels of productive speech or parental responsiveness. Also, the levels of responsiveness did not predict higher levels of productive speech. Therefore, this study shows that no mediation effect of parental responsiveness can be found between the locomotor status of children and the levels of productive speech. Conclusion. Further research that investigates the relation between locomotor status, productive speech and parental responsiveness is needed to fulfill the gap in knowledge in these relations.

- Abstract
Introduction. For children who are raised in families with a low SES and a migration background there is a big chance that at the age of two years, they already lag behind in cognitive and language skills. Good quality of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) can offer an opportunity to close this gap. But the question is: are the children with disadvantaged background represented in the high quality ECEC? Method. This research looked at the correlation between process quality and the number of children from families with low SES and migration background, in day-care and in pre-school. Data from the National Early Childhood Education and Care Quality Monitoring measurements (LLK) over 2017, 2018 and 2019 was used, in combination with CLASS Toddler observation scores. In this research 74 day-care centers and 91 pre-schools were investigated. Results. The results showed that there was no correlation between process quality and the number of children from families with low SES and migration background, in day-care and in pre-school. The educational process quality was better for pre-schools, although the educational process quality was low till moderate for both day-care and pre-schools. Also the number of children from families with low SES and migration background was higher in pre-schools. Conclusion. This study concluded that children with disadvantaged backgrounds are not overrepresented in ECEC with low process quality. This may be due to the measures taken by the Dutch government to facilitate equal opportunities in ECEC. More research is recommended to confirm and to deepen this results.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The present article investigates if joint attention (JA) in babies from 9 to 16 months increases when they attain independent walking. JA is important for the baby’s language development, learning to walk may play a central role in this process. This study is divided in two subquestions. The first subquestion is about the reaction on JA initiated by the parent and the second subquestion is about the JA initiated by the baby. A total of 15 babies were observed in interaction with one of their parents, by using a coding scheme. In addition, a questionnaire was administered regarding the development of the baby. A MANCOVA was used to analyze the data. This study found no significant influence of being able to walk on the amount of JA. A possible explanation for this finding is a too small sample. In addition, the environmental conditions of the observation settings differed too much. The raw data showed a higher mean for the JA initiated by the child as well as a higher mean for the response to JA initiated by the parent. Despite that there is no significant effect, JA is an important aspect to investigate further. In follow-up research, a larger sample can be used and the environmental conditions can be more defined. As an extension in follow-up research, a distinction can be made between the different forms of JA. It can be concluded that in this study no significant relationship was found between the amount of JA and the ability to walk.

- Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the relation between the motor milestone independent walking and receptive vocabulary, with a possible mediating factor moving bids, by children aged 11-15 months. This study also investigates possible gender differences in the variables. The first hypothesis is that the relationship between independent walking and receptive vocabulary is mediated by moving bids. The second hypothesis is that gender differences will only be found in receptive vocabulary. Method: The participants were 20 children aged 11 to 15 months. Two questionnaires were filled in by their parents in order to measure the children’s vocabulary and to determine whether or not the children have achieved the ability of independent walking. To measure the amount of moving bids, the children were observed while playing with a parent. The hypotheses were tested by a hierarchical regression analysis, a MANOVA and a Fisher’s exact test. Results: There is no significant relation found between independent walking and receptive vocabulary, and between independent walking, receptive vocabulary and moving bids. There were also no differences found in the variables between boys and girls. Conclusion: In this study, no results were found for the mediating role of moving bids within the relation between independent walking and receptive vocabulary. No gender differences were found in the 3 variables. An explanation why no significant results were found is the small sample size. Further research should focus on a larger sample.

Consumers are increasingly interested in food products with high nutritional value and health benefits. For instance, fish consumption is linked with diverse positive health benefits and the prevention of certain widespread disorders, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, or cardiovascular diseases. These benefits have been attributed to its excellent nutritional value (large amounts of high-quality fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals) and bioactive compounds, while being relatively low-caloric. Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus tynnus) is one of the most consumed species worldwide, motivated by its good nutritional and organoleptic characteristics. Recently, some organizations have proposed limitations on its consumption due to the presence of contaminants, mainly heavy metals such as mercury. However, several studies have reported that most specimens hold lower levels of contaminants than the established limits and that their richness in selenium effectively limits the contaminants’ bioaccessibility in the human body. Considering this situation, this study aims to provide baseline data about the nutritional composition and the latest evidence regarding the beneficial effects of Atlantic bluefin tuna consumption. A review of the risk-benefit ratio was also conducted to evaluate the safety of its consumption, considering the current suggested limitations to this species’ consumption.

In recent years, robots have increasingly been implemented as tutors in both first- and second-language education. The field of robot-assisted language learning (RALL) is developing rapidly. Studies have been published targeting different languages, age groups, and aspects of language and using different robots and methodologies. The present review presents an overview of the results obtained so far in RALL research and discusses the current possibilities and limitations of using social robots for first- and second-language learning. Thirty-three studies in which vocabulary, reading skills, speaking skills, grammar, and sign language were taught are discussed. Beside insights into learning gains attained in RALL situations, these studies raise more general issues regarding students’ motivation and robots’ social behavior in learning situations. This review concludes with directions for future research on the use of social robots in language education.

- Abstract
Robots are used for language tutoring increasingly often, and commonly programmed to display non-verbal communicative cues such as eye gaze and pointing during robot-child interactions. With a human speaker, children rely more strongly on non-verbal cues (pointing) than on verbal cues (labeling) if these cues are in conflict. However, we do not know how children weigh the non-verbal cues of a robot. Here, we assessed whether four- to six-year-old children (i) differed in their weighing of non-verbal cues (pointing, eye gaze) and verbal cues provided by a robot versus a human; (ii) weighed non-verbal cues differently depending on whether these contrasted with a novel or familiar label; and (iii) relied differently on a robot's non-verbal cues depending on the degree to which they attributed human-like properties to the robot. The results showed that children generally followed pointing over labeling, in line with earlier research. Children did not rely more strongly on the non-verbal cues of a robot versus those of a human. Regarding pointing, children who perceived the robot as more human-like relied on pointing more strongly when it contrasted with a novel label versus a familiar label, but children who perceived the robot as less human-like did not show this difference. Regarding eye gaze, children relied more strongly on the gaze cue when it contrasted with a novel versus a familiar label, and no effect of anthropomorphism was found. Taken together, these results show no difference in the degree to which children rely on non-verbal cues of a robot versus those of a human and provide preliminary evidence that differences in anthropomorphism may interact with children's reliance on a robot's non-verbal behaviors., European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program L2TOR Project; European Union (European Union)

The present study explored cultural differences in parental beliefs about motor development across 2 Western cultures: Israel and the Netherlands. Can 2 cultural models be distinguished regarding infant motor development in Israel and the Netherlands or are parental beliefs about motor development similar across these cultures? Using a questionnaire containing closed and open questions, beliefs of 206 Israeli and 198 Dutch parents of first-born children between 2 and 7 months old were analyzed. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, distinct cultural models were found showing that the Dutch attributed a bigger role to maturation and children's own pace than to stimulation. The Israeli parents found stimulation of motor development important and discussed active stimulation more elaborately. When discussing supportive activities, the Israeli parents mentioned specific activities, whereas the Dutch parents used more general, vague expressions about support. Moreover, the Israeli parents discussed the need for expert advice and advice from relatives and other parents more than the Dutch parents, who rely on their own observations, books, or websites more often. The cultural background was the strongest predictor of parental beliefs about motor development. Parental education, age, children's birth weight, gender, and having seen a physical therapist showed weaker relations with parental beliefs. Altogether, 2 distinguishing cultural models can be found, raising the question whether infant motor development can be approached similarly across Western cultures. Besides this implication for science, practitioners should also be aware of differences between cultures and between parents. (PsycINFO Database Record

Previous research has shown that the presence of a human peer during a learning task can positively affect learning outcomes. The current study aims to find out how second language (L2) vocabulary gains differ depending on whether children are learning by themselves, with a child peer, or with a robot peer. Children were administered an L2 vocabulary training in one of these three conditions. Children's word learning was measured directly after the training and one week later. Contrary to our expectations, children learning by themselves outperformed children in the peer conditions on one out of four word knowledge tasks. On the other tasks, there were no differences between the three conditions. Suggestions to further study the potential benefits of a robot peer are provided.

Abstract Finding a food system to feed the growing worldwide population remains a challenge, especially in the current era, where natural resources are being dramatically depleted. From a historical point of view, the Green Revolution, together with biofortification and sustainable intensification, was established as a possible solution to counter hunger and malnutrition during the second half of the 20th century. As a solution, to overcome the limitations attributed to the Green Revolution, food supply chains were developed. The current food system, based on the long food supply chain (LFSC), is characterized by globalization, promoting several advantages for both producers and consumers. However, LFSC has been demonstrated to be unable to feed the global population and, furthermore, it generates negative ecological, environmental, logistical, and nutritional pressures. Thus, novel efficient food systems are required to respond to current environmental and consumers’ demands, as is the case of short food supply chain (SFSC). As a recently emerging food system, the evaluation of SFSC sustainability in terms of environmental, economic, and social assessment is yet to be determined. This review is focused on the evolution of food supply systems, starting from the Green Revolution to food supply chains, providing a significant perspective on sustainability.

The microbial compositions from concurrent peri-implant and periodontal lesions were compared, since the results reported in the literature on the etiological relationship between these oral pathologies are contradictory. Microbial compositions from nine patients were evaluated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and Principal Components Analysis. Comparisons between the use of curettes or paper points as collection methods and between bacterial composition in both pathologies were performed. Paper points allowed the recovery of a higher number of bacterial genera. A higher bacterial diversity was found in peri-implantitis compared to periodontal samples from the same patient, while a greater number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were present in the corresponding periodontal samples. A higher abundance of oral pathogens, such as Porphyromonas or Treponema, was found in peri-implantitis sites. The opposite trend was observed for Aggregatibacter abundance, which was higher in periodontal than in peri-implantitis lesions, suggesting that both oral pathologies could be considered different but related diseases. Although the analysis of a higher number of samples would be needed, the differences regarding the microbial composition provide a basis for further understating the pathogenesis of peri-implant infections.

In this study, bacterial isolates C1-4-7, D2-4-6, and M1-4-11 from Antarctic soil were phenotypically and genotypically characterized, and their antibacterial spectrum and that of cell-free culture supernatant were investigated. Finally, the effect of temperature and culture medium on the production of antimicrobial compounds was investigated. The three bacteria were identified as different strains of the genus Pseudomonas. The three bacteria were multi-drug resistant to antibiotics. They exhibited different patterns of growth inhibition of pathogenic bacteria. M1-4-11 was remarkable for inhibiting the entire set of pathogenic bacteria tested. All three bacteria demonstrated optimal production of antimicrobial compounds at 15 °C and 18 °C. Among the culture media studied, Nutrient broth would be the most suitable to promote the production of antimicrobial compounds. The thermostability exhibited by the antimicrobial molecules secreted, their size of less than 10 kDa, and their protein nature would indicate that these molecules are bacteriocin-like compounds.

Vitamin D deficiency is currently a significant public health issue closely linked to numerous diseases, such as breast cancer. This study aims to determine the estimated optimal serum levels of vitamin D to have a protective effect against breast cancer, in addition to exploring the biological mechanisms and risk factors involved. A literature search of articles published in the last 5 years was conducted, and simple statistical analyses using mean and standard deviation were performed to calculate the average concentration of vitamin D from different available studies. It has been observed that serum levels of vitamin D ≥ 40.26 ng/mL ± 14.19 ng/mL could exert a protective effect against breast cancer. Additionally, various biological mechanisms, such as those related to the immune system, and risk factors like diet implicated in this relationship were elucidated. Consequently, it can be concluded that proper serum levels of vitamin D may have a protective effect against breast cancer, and dietary supplementation may be an appropriate procedure to achieve these optimal vitamin D concentrations.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Background. Working in a residential institution with youth with severe problems can put professional child care workers (PCCW) at risk for higher levels of perceived job strain (PJS), which is seen as a preliminary stage of burnout. The wellbeing of the PCCW is important for de quality and continuity of care they give. Aim. To investigate the level of PJS of PCCW and which child and employee factors are related to this, in order to give advice to residential youth care institutions on how to prevent high levels of PJS among their PCCW. Method. A self-constructed questionnaire was used to measure PJS, employee and child factors. The Utrechtse Coping Lijst was used to measure coping strategies of the PCCW. 53 PCCW participated in this study. Results. The average scale score for PJS was 2.12 (SD = 0.72), with an item score of 2 representing experiencing 'a little' JS. The results indicate that those PCCW who are more often confronted with physical aggression of clients, more often physically intervene, more often isolate a client, and work on groups with mostly children functioning at a lower cognitive level, showed higher levels of PJS. Discussion. To decrease the level of PJS, it seems important to provide the PCCW with more specific skills and knowledge. This can be done by organizing training, coaching and intervision. These sessions could, for instance, focus on further enhancing PCCW's understanding of youth with mental disorders and teaching them (preventive) aggression management methods.
