In this paper we examine academic recovery in 12 mid- to large-sized school districts across 10 states during the 2021-22 school year. Our findings highlight the challenges that recovery efforts faced during the 2021-22 school year. Although, on average, math and reading test score gains during the school year reached the pace of pre-pandemic school years, they were not accelerated beyond that pace. This is not surprising given that we found that districts struggled to implement recovery programs at the scale they had planned. In the districts where we had detailed data on student participation in academic interventions, we found that recovery efforts often fell short of original expectations for program scale, intensity of treatment, and impact. Interviews with a subsample of district leaders revealed several implementation challenges, including difficulty engaging targeted students consistently across schools, issues with staffing and limitations to staff capacity, challenges with scheduling, and limited engagement of parents as partners in recovery initiatives. Our findings on the pace and trajectory of recovery and the challenges of implementing recovery initiatives raise important questions about the scale of district recovery efforts. We present ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic observations covering three distinct accretion states of the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) MAXI J1820+070: the luminous hard state, a hard-intermediate state and the soft state. Our observations were obtained during the 2018 eruption of MAXI J1820+070 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and AstroSat observatory. The extinction towards the source turns out to be low - $\rm E_{B-V} = 0.2 \pm 0.05$ - making it one of the best UV accretion laboratories among LMXBs. Remarkably, we observe only moderate differences between all three states, with all spectra displaying similar continuum shapes and emission lines. Moreover, the continua are not well-described by physically plausible irradiated disc models. All of this challenges the standard reprocessing picture for UV emission from erupting LMXBs. The UV emission lines are double-peaked, with high-ionization lines displaying higher peak-to-peak velocities. None of the lines display obvious outflow signatures, even though blue-shifted absorption features have been seen in optical and near-infrared lines during the hard state. The emission line ratios are consistent with normal abundances, suggesting that the donor mass at birth was low enough to avoid CNO processing ($\rm M_{2,i} \lesssim 1.0 - 1.5 {\mathrm M_{\odot}}$). Finally, we study the evolution of UV variability in our time-resolved HST observations (hard and hard-intermediate states). We present Poisson Binomial Mechanism Vertical Federated Learning (PBM-VFL), a communication-efficient Vertical Federated Learning algorithm with Differential Privacy guarantees. PBM-VFL combines Secure Multi-Party Computation with the recently introduced Poisson Binomial Mechanism to protect parties' private datasets during model training. We define the novel concept of feature privacy and analyze end-to-end feature and sample privacy of our algorithm. We compare sample privacy loss in VFL with privacy loss in HFL. We also provide the first theoretical characterization of the relationship between privacy budget, convergence error, and communication cost in differentially-private VFL. Finally, we empirically show that our model performs well with high levels of privacy.

Multimodal Large Language Models (LLMs) are pivotal in revolutionizing customer support and operations by integrating multiple modalities such as text, images, and audio. Federated Prompt Learning (FPL) is a recently proposed approach that combines pre-trained multimodal LLMs such as vision-language models with federated learning to create personalized, privacy-preserving AI systems. However, balancing the competing goals of personalization, generalization, and privacy remains a significant challenge. Over-personalization can lead to overfitting, reducing generalizability, while stringent privacy measures, such as differential privacy, can hinder both personalization and generalization. In this paper, we propose a Differentially Private Federated Prompt Learning (DP-FPL) approach to tackle this challenge by leveraging a low-rank adaptation scheme to capture generalization while maintaining a residual term that preserves expressiveness for personalization. To ensure privacy, we introduce a novel method where we apply local differential privacy to the two low-rank components of the local prompt, and global differential privacy to the global prompt. Our approach mitigates the impact of privacy noise on the model performance while balancing the tradeoff between personalization and generalization. As Large Language Models (LLMs) are integrated into electronic health record (EHR) workflows, validated instruments are essential to evaluate their performance before implementation. Existing instruments for provider documentation quality are often unsuitable for the complexities of LLM-generated text and lack validation on real-world data. The Provider Documentation Summarization Quality Instrument (PDSQI-9) was developed to evaluate LLM-generated clinical summaries. Multi-document summaries were generated from real-world EHR data across multiple specialties using several LLMs (GPT-4o, Mixtral 8x7b, and Llama 3-8b). Validation included Pearson correlation for substantive validity, factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha for structural validity, inter-rater reliability (ICC and Krippendorff's alpha) for generalizability, a semi-Delphi process for content validity, and comparisons of high-versus low-quality summaries for discriminant validity. Seven physician raters evaluated 779 summaries and answered 8,329 questions, achieving over 80% power for inter-rater reliability. The PDSQI-9 demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.879; 95% CI: 0.867-0.891) and high inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.867; 95% CI: 0.867-0.868), supporting structural validity and generalizability. Factor analysis identified a 4-factor model explaining 58% of the variance, representing organization, clarity, accuracy, and utility. Substantive validity was supported by correlations between note length and scores for Succinct (rho = -0.200, p = 0.029) and Organized ($\rho = -0.190$, $p = 0.037$). Discriminant validity distinguished high- from low-quality summaries ($p < 0.001$). The PDSQI-9 demonstrates robust construct validity, supporting its use in clinical practice to evaluate LLM-generated summaries and facilitate safer integration of LLMs into healthcare workflows.

We describe the development of a one-credit course to promote AI literacy at The University of Texas at Austin. In response to a call for the rapid deployment of class to serve a broad audience in Fall of 2023, we designed a 14-week seminar-style course that incorporated an interdisciplinary group of speakers who lectured on topics ranging from the fundamentals of AI to societal concerns including disinformation and employment. University students, faculty, and staff, and even community members outside of the University, were invited to enroll in this online offering: The Essentials of AI for Life and Society. We collected feedback from course participants through weekly reflections and a final survey. Satisfyingly, we found that attendees reported gains in their AI literacy. We sought critical feedback through quantitative and qualitative analysis, which uncovered challenges in designing a course for this general audience. We utilized the course feedback to design a three-credit version of the course that is being offered in Fall of 2024. The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of Courant algebroids with integrable para-Hermitian vector bundle structures by invoking the theory of Lie bialgebroids. We consider the case where the underlying manifold has an almost para-complex structure, and use this to define a notion of para-holomorphic algebroid. We investigate connections on para-holomorphic algebroids and determine an appropriate sense in which they can be para-complex. In the realm of data analysis and bioinformatics, representing time series data in a manner akin to biological sequences offers a novel approach to leverage sequence analysis techniques. Transforming time series signals into molecular sequence-type representations allows us to enhance pattern recognition by applying sophisticated sequence analysis techniques (e.g. $k$-mers based representation) developed in bioinformatics, uncovering hidden patterns and relationships in complex, non-linear time series data. This paper proposes a method to transform time series signals into biological/molecular sequence-type representations using a unique alphabetic mapping technique. By generating 26 ranges corresponding to the 26 letters of the English alphabet, each value within the time series is mapped to a specific character based on its range. This conversion facilitates the application of sequence analysis algorithms, typically used in bioinformatics, to analyze time series data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by converting real-world time series signals into character sequences and performing sequence classification. The resulting sequences can be utilized for various sequence-based analysis techniques, offering a new perspective on time series data representation and analysis.

Accurate molecular sequence analysis is a key task in the field of bioinformatics. To apply molecular sequence classification algorithms, we first need to generate the appropriate representations of the sequences. Traditional numeric sequence representation techniques are mostly based on sequence alignment that faces limitations in the form of lack of accuracy. Although several alignment-free techniques have also been introduced, their tabular data form results in low performance when used with Deep Learning (DL) models compared to the competitive performance observed in the case of image-based data. To find a solution to this problem and to make Deep Learning (DL) models function to their maximum potential while capturing the important spatial information in the sequence data, we propose a universal Hibert curve-based Chaos Game Representation (CGR) method. This method is a transformative function that involves a novel Alphabetic index mapping technique used in constructing Hilbert curve-based image representation from molecular sequences. Our method can be globally applied to any type of molecular sequence data. The Hilbert curve-based image representations can be used as input to sophisticated vision DL models for sequence classification. The proposed method shows promising results as it outperforms current state-of-the-art methods by achieving a high accuracy of $94.5$\% and an F1 score of $93.9\%$ when tested with the CNN model on the lung cancer dataset. This approach opens up a new horizon for exploring molecular sequence analysis using image classification methods.

The availability of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) virus data post-COVID has reached exponentially to an enormous magnitude, opening research doors to analyze its behavior. Various studies are conducted by researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the virus, like genomic surveillance, etc, so that efficient prevention mechanisms can be developed. However, the unstable nature of the virus (rapid mutations, multiple hosts, etc) creates challenges in designing analytical systems for it. Therefore, we propose a neural network-based (NN) mechanism to perform an efficient analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 data, as NN portrays generalized behavior upon training. Moreover, rather than using the full-length genome of the virus, we apply our method to its spike region, as this region is known to have predominant mutations and is used to attach to the host cell membrane. In this paper, we introduce a pipeline that first converts the spike protein sequences into a fixed-length numerical representation and then uses Neuromorphic Spiking Neural Network to classify those sequences. We compare the performance of our method with various baselines using real-world SARS-CoV-2 spike sequence data and show that our method is able to achieve higher predictive accuracy compared to the recent baselines.

In molecular structure data, SMILES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) strings are used to analyze molecular structure design. Numerical feature representation of SMILES strings is a challenging task. This work proposes a kernel-based approach for encoding and analyzing molecular structures from SMILES strings. The proposed approach involves computing a kernel matrix using the Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm while using kernel principal component analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction. The resulting low-dimensional embeddings are then used for classification and regression analysis. The kernel matrix is computed by converting the SMILES strings into molecular structures using the Morgan Fingerprint, which computes a fingerprint for each molecule. The distance matrix is computed using the pairwise kernels function. The Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm is used to compute the final kernel matrix that satisfies the constraints of a probability distribution. This is achieved by iteratively adjusting the kernel matrix until the marginal distributions of the rows and columns match the desired marginal distributions. We provided a comprehensive empirical analysis of the proposed kernel method to evaluate its goodness with greater depth. The suggested method is assessed for drug subcategory prediction (classification task) and solubility AlogPS ``Aqueous solubility and Octanol/Water partition coefficient" (regression task) using the benchmark SMILES string dataset. The outcomes show the proposed method outperforms several baseline methods in terms of supervised analysis and has potential uses in molecular design and drug discovery. Overall, the suggested method is a promising avenue for kernel methods-based molecular structure analysis and design.

Fake news poses a significant threat to public opinion and social stability in modern society. This study presents a comparative evaluation of BERT-like encoder-only models and autoregressive decoder-only large language models (LLMs) for fake news detection. We introduce a dataset of news articles labeled with GPT-4 assistance (an AI-labeling method) and verified by human experts to ensure reliability. Both BERT-like encoder-only models and LLMs were fine-tuned on this dataset. Additionally, we developed an instruction-tuned LLM approach with majority voting during inference for label generation. Our analysis reveals that BERT-like models generally outperform LLMs in classification tasks, while LLMs demonstrate superior robustness against text perturbations. Compared to weak labels (distant supervision) data, the results show that AI labels with human supervision achieve better classification results. Spatial patterns are widely observed in numerous nonequilibrium natural systems, often undergoing complex transitions and bifurcations, thereby exhibiting significant importance in many physical and biological systems such as embryonic development, ecosystem desertification, and turbulence. However, how spatial pattern formation emerges and how the spatial pattern switches are not fully understood. Here, we developed a landscape-flux field theory via the spatial mode expansion method to uncover the underlying physical mechanism of the pattern formation and switching. We identified the landscape and flux field as the driving force for spatial dynamics and applied this theory to the critical transitions between spatial vegetation patterns in semi-arid ecosystems, revealing that the nonequilibrium flux drives the switchings of spatial patterns. We uncovered how the pattern switching emerges through the optimal pathways and how fast this occurs via the speed of pattern switching. Furthermore, both the averaged flux and the entropy production rate exhibit peaks near pattern switching boundaries, revealing dynamical and thermodynamical origins for pattern transitions, and further offering early warning signals for anticipating spatial pattern switching. Our work thus reveals physical mechanisms on spatial pattern-switching in semi-arid ecosystems and, more generally, introduces a useful approach for quantifying spatial pattern switching in nonequilibrium systems, which further offers practical applications such as early warning signals for critical transitions of spatial patterns.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), like any transformative technology, has the potential to be a double-edged sword, leading either toward significant advancements or detrimental outcomes for society as a whole. As is often the case when it comes to widely-used technologies in market economies (e.g., cars and semiconductor chips), commercial interest tends to be the predominant guiding factor. The AI community is at risk of becoming polarized to either take a laissez-faire attitude toward AI development, or to call for government overregulation. Between these two poles we argue for the community of AI practitioners to consciously and proactively work for the common good. This paper offers a blueprint for a new type of innovation infrastructure including 18 concrete milestones to guide AI research in that direction. Our view is that we are still in the early days of practical AI, and focused efforts by practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders can still maximize the upsides of AI and minimize its downsides. We talked to luminaries such as recent Nobelist John Jumper on science, President Barack Obama on governance, former UN Ambassador and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice on security, philanthropist Eric Schmidt on several topics, and science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson on entertainment. This ongoing dialogue and collaborative effort has produced a comprehensive, realistic view of what the actual impact of AI could be, from a diverse assembly of thinkers with deep understanding of this technology and these domains. From these exchanges, five recurring guidelines emerged, which form the cornerstone of a framework for beginning to harness AI in service of the public good. They not only guide our efforts in discovery but also shape our approach to deploying this transformative technology responsibly and ethically.

Can computer vision help us explore the ocean? The ultimate challenge for computer vision is to recognize any visual phenomena, more than only the objects and animals humans encounter in their terrestrial lives. Previous datasets have explored everyday objects and fine-grained categories humans see frequently. We present the FathomVerse v0 detection dataset to push the limits of our field by exploring animals that rarely come in contact with people in the deep sea. These animals present a novel vision challenge. The FathomVerse v0 dataset consists of 3843 images with 8092 bounding boxes from 12 distinct morphological groups recorded at two locations on the deep seafloor that are new to computer vision. It features visually perplexing scenarios such as an octopus intertwined with a sea star, and confounding categories like vampire squids and sea spiders. This dataset can push forward research on topics like fine-grained transfer learning, novel category discovery, species distribution modeling, and carbon cycle analysis, all of which are important to the care and husbandry of our planet., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

In January 2024, UNCF's Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute (FDPRI) published "Adult Learner Initiative External Report," which outlined key findings and recommendations from an evaluation of the Adult Learner Initiative. To supplement and extend that work, Ascendium Education Group collaborated with FDPRI and Lumina Foundation to fund this portion of the evaluation, which centers Black, rural learners. Black, rural learners and other institutional actors at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in North Carolina experience rurality in varied ways. Despite institutional characteristics and geospatial locations that contribute to the unique identities of HBCUs, actors offered nuanced considerations about rurality. Faculty, staff, and students understood rurality in the context of environmental, financial, and social factors in addition to services and programs tailored to rural students. This report engages rural data landscapes, scholarship on rural students, and empirical research about adult learners at HBCUs to explore rurality. Our overall approach is threefold: First, the authors use place-based data categories and nomenclature to situate HBCUs within rural discourses. Second, the authors position institutional and statewide strategic plans as critical documents that help contextualize researchers' and institutional actors' conceptions of rurality. Third, the authors frame HBCU actors' voices about place as essential contextual components for understanding institutional and community cultures and differentiating between HBCU environments.

This work concerns an alignment problem that has applications in many geospatial problems such as resource allocation and building reliable disease maps. Here, we introduce the problem of optimally aligning $k$ collections of $m$ spatial supports over $n$ spatial units in a $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. We show that the 1-dimensional case is solvable in time polynomial in $k$, $m$ and $n$. We then show that the 2-dimensional case is NP-hard for 2 collections of 2 supports. Finally, we devise a heuristic for aligning a set of collections in the 2-dimensional case.

We report the detection of water vapor associated with main-belt comet 358P/PANSTARRS on UT 2024 January 8-9 using the NIRSPEC instrument aboard JWST. We derive a water production rate of Q(H2O)=(5.0+/-0.2)x10^25 molecules/s, marking only the second direct detection of sublimation products of any kind from a main-belt comet, after 238P/Read. Similar to 238P, we find a remarkable absence of hypervolatile species, finding Q(CO2)<7.6x10^22 molecules/s, corresponding to Q(CO2)/Q(H2O)<0.2%. Upper limits on CH3OH and CO emission are also estimated. Photometry from ground-based observations show that the dust coma brightened and faded slowly over ~250 days in 2023-2024, consistent with photometric behavior observed in 2012-2013, but also indicate a ~2.5x decline in the dust production rate between these two periods. Dynamical dust modeling shows that the coma's morphology as imaged by JWST's NIRCAM instrument on 2023 November 22 can be reproduced by asymmetric dust emission from a nucleus with a mid-range obliquity (~80 deg) with a steady-state mass loss rate of ~0.8 kg/s. Finally, we find similar Afrho-to-gas ratios of log10(Afrho/Q(H2O))=-24.8+/-0.2 for 358P and log10(Afrho/QH2O)=-24.4+/-0.2 for 238P, suggesting that Afrho could serve as an effective proxy for estimating water production rates in other active main-belt comets. The confirmation of water vapor outgassing in both main-belt comets observed by JWST to date reinforces the use of recurrent activity near perihelion as an indicator of sublimation-driven activity in active asteroids., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. Advancements in genomics technology lead to a rising volume of viral (e.g., SARS-CoV-2) sequence data, resulting in increased usage of machine learning (ML) in bioinformatics. Traditional ML techniques require centralized data collection and processing, posing challenges in realistic healthcare scenarios. Additionally, privacy, ownership, and stringent regulation issues exist when pooling medical data into centralized storage to train a powerful deep learning (DL) model. The Federated learning (FL) approach overcomes such issues by setting up a central aggregator server and a shared global model. It also facilitates data privacy by extracting knowledge while keeping the actual data private. This work proposes a cutting-edge Privacy enhancement through Iterative Collaboration (EPIC) architecture. The network is divided and distributed between local and centralized servers. We demonstrate the EPIC approach to resolve a supervised classification problem to estimate SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequence data lineage without explicitly transferring raw sequence data. We aim to create a universal decentralized optimization framework that allows various data holders to work together and converge to a single predictive model. The findings demonstrate that privacy-preserving strategies can be successfully used with aggregation approaches without materially altering the degree of learning convergence. We show that the gravitational waveform emitted by a binary on an eccentric orbit can be naturally decomposed into a series of harmonics. The frequencies of these harmonics depend upon the radial frequency, $f_{\mathrm{r}}$, determined by the time to return to apoapsis, and the azimuthal frequency, $f_{\phi}$, determined by the time to complete one orbit relative to a fixed axis. These frequencies differ due to periapsis advance. Restricting to the (2, 2) multipole, we find that the frequencies can be expressed as $f = 2 f_{\phi} + k f_{\mathrm{r}}$. We introduce a straightforward method of generating these harmonics and show that the majority of the signal power is contained in the $k= -1, 0, 1$ harmonics for moderate eccentricities. We demonstrate that by filtering these three leading harmonics, we are able to obtain a good estimate of the orbital eccentricity from their relative amplitudes., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Solving Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problems requires the inversion of a linear system of equations, which can be done using a quantum algorithm for matrix inversion arxiv:1806.01838. However, the number of shots required to measure the output of the system can be prohibitive and remove any advantage obtained by quantum computing. In this work we propose a scheme for measuring the output of QSVT matrix inversion algorithms specifically for the CFD use case. We use a Quantum Signal Processing (QSP) based amplitude estimation algorithm arxiv:2207.08628 and show how it can be combined with the QSVT matrix inversion algorithm. We perform a detailed resource estimation of the amount of computational resources required for a single iteration of amplitude estimation, and compare the costs of amplitude estimation with the cost of not doing amplitude estimation and measuring the whole wavefunction. We also propose a measurement scheme to reduce the number of amplitudes measured in the CFD example by focusing on large amplitudes only. We simulate the whole CFD loop, finding that thus measuring only a small number of the total amplitudes in the output vector still results in an acceptable level of overall error., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures

Undergraduate graders are frequently important contributors to the teaching team in post-secondary education settings. This study set out to investigate agreement for a team of undergraduate graders as they acquired training and experience for scoring responses to open-ended tasks. The t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) has emerged as a popular dimensionality reduction technique for visualizing high-dimensional data. It computes pairwise similarities between data points by default using an RBF kernel and random initialization (in low-dimensional space), which successfully captures the overall structure but may struggle to preserve the local structure efficiently. This research proposes a novel approach called the Modified Isolation Kernel (MIK) as an alternative to the Gaussian kernel, which is built upon the concept of the Isolation Kernel. MIK uses adaptive density estimation to capture local structures more accurately and integrates robustness measures. It also assigns higher similarity values to nearby points and lower values to distant points. Comparative research using the normal Gaussian kernel, the isolation kernel, and several initialization techniques, including random, PCA, and random walk initializations, are used to assess the proposed approach (MIK). Additionally, we compare the computational efficiency of all $3$ kernels with $3$ different initialization methods. Our experimental results demonstrate several advantages of the proposed kernel (MIK) and initialization method selection. It exhibits improved preservation of the local and global structure and enables better visualization of clusters and subclusters in the embedded space. These findings contribute to advancing dimensionality reduction techniques and provide researchers and practitioners with an effective tool for data exploration, visualization, and analysis in various domains.

Understanding the structural and functional characteristics of proteins are crucial for developing preventative and curative strategies that impact fields from drug discovery to policy development. An important and popular technique for examining how amino acids make up these characteristics of the protein sequences with position-specific scoring (PSS). While the string kernel is crucial in natural language processing (NLP), it is unclear if string kernels can extract biologically meaningful information from protein sequences, despite the fact that they have been shown to be effective in the general sequence analysis tasks. In this work, we propose a weighted PSS kernel matrix (or W-PSSKM), that combines a PSS representation of protein sequences, which encodes the frequency information of each amino acid in a sequence, with the notion of the string kernel. This results in a novel kernel function that outperforms many other approaches for protein sequence classification. We perform extensive experimentation to evaluate the proposed method. Our findings demonstrate that the W-PSSKM significantly outperforms existing baselines and state-of-the-art methods and achieves up to 45.1\% improvement in classification accuracy.

The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV/c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean muon-neutrino energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 muon-neutrino CC interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole reactions is identified by the cross-section excess relative to predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2- hole processes are rated by chi-square comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured muon-neutrino CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Quantum error correction (QEC) will be essential to achieve the accuracy needed for quantum computers to realise their full potential. The field has seen promising progress with demonstrations of early QEC and real-time decoded experiments. As quantum computers advance towards demonstrating a universal fault-tolerant logical gate set, implementing scalable and low-latency real-time decoding will be crucial to prevent the backlog problem, avoiding an exponential slowdown and maintaining a fast logical clock rate. Here, we demonstrate low-latency feedback with a scalable FPGA decoder integrated into the control system of a superconducting quantum processor. We perform an 8-qubit stability experiment with up to $25$ decoding rounds and a mean decoding time per round below $1$ ${\mu}s$, showing that we avoid the backlog problem even on superconducting hardware with the strictest speed requirements. We observe logical error suppression as the number of decoding rounds is increased. We also implement and time a fast-feedback experiment demonstrating a decoding response time of $9.6$ ${\mu}s$ for a total of $9$ measurement rounds. The decoder throughput and latency developed in this work, combined with continued device improvements, unlock the next generation of experiments that go beyond purely keeping logical qubits alive and into demonstrating building blocks of fault-tolerant computation, such as lattice surgery and magic state teleportation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information

Sampling-based motion planning methods, while effective in high-dimensional spaces, often suffer from inefficiencies due to irregular sampling distributions, leading to suboptimal exploration of the configuration space. In this paper, we propose an approach that enhances the efficiency of these methods by utilizing low-discrepancy distributions generated through Message-Passing Monte Carlo (MPMC). MPMC leverages Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to generate point sets that uniformly cover the space, with uniformity assessed using the the $\cL_p$-discrepancy measure, which quantifies the irregularity of sample distributions. By improving the uniformity of the point sets, our approach significantly reduces computational overhead and the number of samples required for solving motion planning problems. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms traditional sampling techniques in terms of planning efficiency.

This study investigates innovative interaction designs for communication and collaborative learning between learners of mixed hearing and signing abilities, leveraging advancements in mixed reality technologies like Apple Vision Pro and generative AI for animated avatars. Adopting a participatory design approach, we engaged 15 d/Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students to brainstorm ideas for an AI avatar with interpreting ability (sign language to English, voice to English) that would facilitate their face-to-face communication with hearing peers. Participants envisioned the AI avatars to address some issues with human interpreters, such as lack of availability, and provide affordable options to expensive personalized interpreting service. Our findings indicate a range of preferences for integrating the AI avatars with actual human figures of both DHH and hearing communication partners. The participants highlighted the importance of having control over customizing the AI avatar, such as AI-generated signs, voices, facial expressions, and their synchronization for enhanced emotional display in communication. Based on our findings, we propose a suite of design recommendations that balance respecting sign language norms with adherence to hearing social norms. Our study offers insights on improving the authenticity of generative AI in scenarios involving specific, and sometimes unfamiliar, social norms.

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Large Language Models have advanced clinical Natural Language Generation, creating opportunities to manage the volume of medical text. However, the high-stakes nature of medicine requires reliable evaluation, which remains a challenge. In this narrative review, we assess the current evaluation state for clinical summarization tasks and propose future directions to address the resource constraints of expert human evaluation.

Hydrometric forecasting is crucial for managing water resources, flood prediction, and environmental protection. Water stations are interconnected, and this connectivity influences the measurements at other stations. However, the dynamic and implicit nature of water flow paths makes it challenging to extract a priori knowledge of the connectivity structure. We hypothesize that terrain elevation significantly affects flow and connectivity. To incorporate this, we use LiDAR terrain elevation data encoded through a Vision Transformer (ViT). The ViT, which has demonstrated excellent performance in image classification by directly applying transformers to sequences of image patches, efficiently captures spatial features of terrain elevation. To account for both spatial and temporal features, we employ GRU blocks enhanced with graph convolution, a method widely used in the literature. We propose a hybrid graph learning structure that combines static and dynamic graph learning. A static graph, derived from transformer-encoded LiDAR data, captures terrain elevation relationships, while a dynamic graph adapts to temporal changes, improving the overall graph representation. We apply graph convolution in two layers through these static and dynamic graphs. Our method makes daily predictions up to 12 days ahead. Empirical results from multiple water stations in Quebec demonstrate that our method significantly reduces prediction error by an average of 10\% across all days, with greater improvements for longer forecasting horizons.

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has shown its effectiveness in learning effective 3D representation from a small amount of labelled data while utilizing large unlabelled data. Traditional semi-supervised approaches rely on the fundamental concept of predicting pseudo-labels for unlabelled data and incorporating them into the learning process. However, we identify that the existing methods do not fully utilize all the unlabelled samples and consequently limit their potential performance. To address this issue, we propose AllMatch, a novel SSL-based 3D classification framework that effectively utilizes all the unlabelled samples. AllMatch comprises three modules: (1) an adaptive hard augmentation module that applies relatively hard augmentations to the high-confident unlabelled samples with lower loss values, thereby enhancing the contribution of such samples, (2) an inverse learning module that further improves the utilization of unlabelled data by learning what not to learn, and (3) a contrastive learning module that ensures learning from all the samples in both supervised and unsupervised settings. Comprehensive experiments on two popular 3D datasets demonstrate a performance improvement of up to 11.2% with 1% labelled data, surpassing the SOTA by a significant margin. Furthermore, AllMatch exhibits its efficiency in effectively leveraging all the unlabelled data, demonstrated by the fact that only 10% of labelled data reaches nearly the same performance as fully-supervised learning with all labelled data. We report the rotationally resolved spectrum of a single polyatomic molecular ion in the gas phase. Building upon the recently developed inelastic recoil spectroscopy (IRS) technique, we have achieved a spectral resolution sufficient to observe resolved rotational-vibrational transitions of a trapped cyclopropenyl cation, c-C3H3+. The high precision of IRS shown in this work presents an attractive platform for astrochemistry, single molecule chiral detection, and tests of fundamental physics.

Understanding emotions is fundamental to human interaction and experience. Humans easily infer emotions from situations or facial expressions, situations from emotions, and do a variety of other affective cognition. How adept is modern AI at these inferences? We introduce an evaluation framework for testing affective cognition in foundation models. Starting from psychological theory, we generate 1,280 diverse scenarios exploring relationships between appraisals, emotions, expressions, and outcomes. We evaluate the abilities of foundation models (GPT-4, Claude-3, Gemini-1.5-Pro) and humans (N = 567) across carefully selected conditions. Our results show foundation models tend to agree with human intuitions, matching or exceeding interparticipant agreement. In some conditions, models are ``superhuman'' -- they better predict modal human judgements than the average human. All models benefit from chain-of-thought reasoning. This suggests foundation models have acquired a human-like understanding of emotions and their influence on beliefs and behavior.

In pursuit of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, operational approaches offer insights into quantum-gravitational effects produced by quantum superposition of different spacetimes not diffeomorphic to one another. Recent work applies this approach to superpose cylindrically identified Minkowski spacetimes (i.e. periodic boundary conditions) with different characteristic circumferences, where a two-level detector coupled to a quantum field residing in the spacetime exhibits resonance peaks in response at certain values of the superposed length ratios. Here, we extend this analysis to a superposition of cylindrically identified Rindler spacetimes, considering a two-level detector constantly accelerated in the direction orthogonal to the compact dimension. Similarly to previous work, we find resonance peaks in the detector response at rational ratios of the superposed compactified lengths, which we observe to be accentuated by the acceleration of the detector. Furthermore, for the first time we confirm the detailed balance condition due to acceleration in a superposition of spacetimes, commensurate with the Unruh effect in a single spacetime state. The resonant structure of detector response in the presence of event horizons, for the first time observed in 3+1 dimensions, may offer clues to the nature of black hole entropy in the full theory of quantum gravity., Comment: 8 + 12 pages, 7 + 2 figures

Cancer is a complex disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth. T cell receptors (TCRs), crucial proteins in the immune system, play a key role in recognizing antigens, including those associated with cancer. Recent advancements in sequencing technologies have facilitated comprehensive profiling of TCR repertoires, uncovering TCRs with potent anti-cancer activity and enabling TCR-based immunotherapies. However, analyzing these intricate biomolecules necessitates efficient representations that capture their structural and functional information. T-cell protein sequences pose unique challenges due to their relatively smaller lengths compared to other biomolecules. An image-based representation approach becomes a preferred choice for efficient embeddings, allowing for the preservation of essential details and enabling comprehensive analysis of T-cell protein sequences. In this paper, we propose to generate images from the protein sequences using the idea of Chaos Game Representation (CGR) using the Kaleidoscopic images approach. This Deep Learning Assisted Analysis of Protein Sequences Using Chaos Enhanced Kaleidoscopic Images (called DANCE) provides a unique way to visualize protein sequences by recursively applying chaos game rules around a central seed point. we perform the classification of the T cell receptors (TCRs) protein sequences in terms of their respective target cancer cells, as TCRs are known for their immune response against cancer disease. The TCR sequences are converted into images using the DANCE method. We employ deep-learning vision models to perform the classification to obtain insights into the relationship between the visual patterns observed in the generated kaleidoscopic images and the underlying protein properties. By combining CGR-based image generation with deep learning classification, this study opens novel possibilities in the protein analysis domain.

Molecular sequence analysis is crucial for comprehending several biological processes, including protein-protein interactions, functional annotation, and disease classification. The large number of sequences and the inherently complicated nature of protein structures make it challenging to analyze such data. Finding patterns and enhancing subsequent research requires the use of dimensionality reduction and feature selection approaches. Recently, a method called Correlated Clustering and Projection (CCP) has been proposed as an effective method for biological sequencing data. The CCP technique is still costly to compute even though it is effective for sequence visualization. Furthermore, its utility for classifying molecular sequences is still uncertain. To solve these two problems, we present a Nearest Neighbor Correlated Clustering and Projection (CCP-NN)-based technique for efficiently preprocessing molecular sequence data. To group related molecular sequences and produce representative supersequences, CCP makes use of sequence-to-sequence correlations. As opposed to conventional methods, CCP doesn't rely on matrix diagonalization, therefore it can be applied to a range of machine-learning problems. We estimate the density map and compute the correlation using a nearest-neighbor search technique. We performed molecular sequence classification using CCP and CCP-NN representations to assess the efficacy of our proposed approach. Our findings show that CCP-NN considerably improves classification task accuracy as well as significantly outperforms CCP in terms of computational runtime.

To support and enhance educational attainment in the United States, the Lumina Foundation established a national goal of 60% of adults earning a high-quality credential by 2025. To achieve this goal, the Lumina Foundation expanded its funding to the adult learner population in 2017 by establishing the Adult Promise Initiative. The organization recognizes and values diversity, equity, and inclusion in its work and understands how minority-serving institutions, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), are integral to the proliferation of Black adult learners. Recognizing the tremendous impact HBCUs have on the educational attainment of Black Adult Learners, we must identify their curricular and co-curricular best practices that are critical to the academic success of this population. This report will provide an overview of these best practices for faculty, staff, and students of the five HBCUs participating in the Lumina Adult Learner Initiative grant. The organization of this report will include a brief review of the Adult Learner Initiative grant and its components, followed by the best practices frequently discussed among faculty, staff, and students participating in the grant and recommendations. The authors will then review Lumina's philanthropic approach to the grant. Lastly, how staff and administrators define capacity-building for the adult learner population will be examined.
