Introduction: Abdominal obesity is the excess of deposits of fat in the abdominal region and it is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is a metabolic risk factor for non-communicable diseases, and it is the leading cause of premature death in the world. Objective: to determine the association between abdominal obesity and hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia history in Panamanian college students. Materials and methods: Analytical cross- sectional study carried out in 434 college students from four different cities of a private university in Panamá. Every participant in the study signed written consent. Abdominal obesity was established as a waist circumference of ≥80 cm in women and ≥90 cm in men. Hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia history were established with the basic questionnaire in the STEPS World Health Organization Instrument. Descriptive, as well as bivariate and multivariate analysis, were realized using logistic regression models. Results: 36.41% of participants had abdominal obesity (no statistically significant difference was found by sex). 14.29%, 9.22%, and 13.82% of the students surveyed reported a history of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia respectively (no statistically significant difference was found by sex). After adjusting by sex, age, and socioeconomic level, abdominal obesity was associated with hypertension antecedent (OR=2.06, CI 95%: 1.183-3.597, p=0.011). Conclusions: Students who evidenced abdominal obesity were more likely to have a hypertension history. The study recommends implementing strategies that promote healthy living habits to reduce future cardiovascular risk in the Panamanian university population

Resumen Analizamos, desde un enfoque mixto, la incidencia institucional en la formación en ética y ciudadana de las universidades de Bogotá. En la fase cuantitativa, estimamos el efecto de las universidades en el módulo de competencias ciudadanas de la prueba Saber Pro para el año 2022 utilizando análisis de regresión multinivel, y hacemos una clasificación de desempeño. En la fase cualitativa incluimos tres universidades confesionales. Encuestamos a estudiantes sobre su experiencia en los cursos sobre estos temas y entrevistamos a profesores y directivos sobre orientaciones institucionales para la enseñanza de la ética, aplicación en el aula y evaluación. Concluimos mostrando que una visión tradicional de la formación ética puede estar afectando negativamente el desempeño de estudiantes en competencias ciudadanas.

La presente contribución pretende de forma general discutir la frecuencia con la que han aparecido tumbas con enterramientos femeninos sometidos al ritual campaniforme en la región de Madrid. Destacan la variabilidad en el tipo de estructuras funerarias empleadas, los individuos asociados, la diversidad de los ajuares y la presencia de reliquias, entre otros. Gracias a una serie de investigaciones recientes, la obtención de datos empíricos en varios yacimientos ha permitido obtener una visión más acorde con la realidad, al menos aquella manifestada en el ámbito funerario. Los datos apuntan a la existencia de diferentes categorías o roles sociales de las mujeres en el marco de la sociedad campaniforme, tradicionalmente considerada como un ejemplo de incipiente desigualdad, una sociedad de rango con toda una serie de elementos de estatus, caracterizada por una élite guerrera. Hoy en día, el ámbito funerario refleja una presencia de mujeres en los contextos funerarios, que no solo es frecuente, sino también con un estatus relevante y de pertenencia al grupo (relacional) en un marco social mucho más dinámico de lo inicialmente supuesto. ABSTRACT: This contribution aims to discuss in general terms the frequency with which Bell Beaker female tombs have been documented in central Iberia, especially in the region of Madrid. We can highlight the great variability of funerary structures, the associated individuals, the diversity of the grave goods and the presence of relics in their tombs, among others. Thanks to a series of recent research projects, empirical data from several sites has allowed us to obtain a more accurate view of a reality, at least in the funerary sphere. These new data allow us a glimpse of several social roles or categories, as Bell Beakers have been traditionally considered as an example of incipient inequality. This society of rank shows several items that are characteristic of a warrior elite. However, we have now enough knowledge to confirm that the women were not only found frequently in the burials, but also played an important social role in several chalcolithic sites.

This paper reports the experience of the symposium “Mobbing and health”, held at the First Ibero American Conference on Workplace and Institutional Mobbing. Based on original research, the authors agreed that mobbing is harmful to physical and mental health, to social life and the relationship with the partner. Symptoms range from sleeping problems, food habits, mood, psychoactive substance use, anxiety, depression, fatigue and deterioration of sexual life, to headaches, hypertension, fibromyalgia and suicide, in extreme cases. The authors also agreed that family support, social support at work and psychotherapeutic intervention are key ways to help the victims. Harassment is recognized as a serious public health problem particularly, though not exclusively, in economically disadvantaged countries. This refers to the fact that mobbing, like other forms of violence, is one of the great evils resulting from the economic crisis that increased social inequality. The authors also said that phenomena such as mobbing should be made clear to the general society in seeking solutions. Thus it is important to target appropriate forums and opportunities to influence public policies and to encourage politicians to legislate and regulate comprehensive health protection of workers. Oat (Oa) and apple (Ap) starches were isolated and chemically modified by oxidation with 10% NaOCl to obtain oxidized starches (OOa and OAp), followed by cross-linking with a mixture of 5.6 g of sodium tripolyphosphate and 11 g of sodium trimetaphosphate to obtain doubly modified starches (OCOa and OCAp). In the native and modified starches, the functional properties (swelling power and solubility, and freeze-thaw stability) and thermal and rheological properties (steady-state flow curves and paste formation profile) were evaluated. The swelling power of native and double modified starches varied from 57 to 86 g/g and the solubility from 0.8 to 6.0 g/100 g, these variables increased as the study temperature increased; the increment in these properties was greater in Oa compared to Ap. Oxidation followed by crosslinking increased the freeze-thaw stability in Oa and Ap starches at 30, 60, 75, and 90 °C. It also increased the Tg of OCAp and OCOa ≈ 9% compared to the native samples, respectively; while an inverse pattern was observed in apparent viscosity were this value decreased ≈ 0.8 Pa × s for Oa and ≈ 0.5 Pa × s for Ap compared to the double modified samples. All samples presented a thinning cut-type behavior (pseudoplastic), indicating structural differences. Cross-linking in oxidized starches produced a reinforcing matrix that was determined in the paste formation profile. Dual modification (oxidation-cross-linking) could be an alternative for using starches from underused botanical sources, such as apples and oats, with different functional properties and feasible applications in food systems.

En los procesos de formación de investigadores en educación desde las perspectivas de la pedagogía crítica se presentan una serie de tensiones derivadas de su comprensión y posibilidades de materialización, se identifican y desarrollan las siguientes: a. Pedagogía crítica, de su fundamentación conceptual, a su ejercicio contextual; b. De la estigmatización en un país polarizado a la toma de conciencia; c. De los tiempos y movimientos a la formación y reflexión situada y comprometida; d. Del estudiante/profesor obediente al sujeto social e histórico; e. Del cumplimiento de un plan de contenidos a la formación intencionada; así, se pretende aportar, desde una postura fenomenológica, a construir diálogos en torno a ¿Cuáles elementos orientadores de las perspectivas de la pedagogía crítica se configuran como horizonte de formación de investigadores en educación?

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer and the second leading cause of oncological mortality in men. Its prognosis is estimated by normograms based on statistical methods. However, it is still a challenge to accurately determine the pathological stage from clinical data. Our aim is to describe and analyze the relationship between sociodemographic, quality-of-life and clinical variables in patients undergoing a radical prostatectomy. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out and included 51 patients undergoing a radical prostatectomy in a general hospital in southeastern Spain. The normality of all variables was studied. A descriptive and association/correlation analysis of the most relevant variables of the study was carried out. In addition, a multivariate analysis was performed to study the intergroup differences between variables with significant correlation. Age was related to a higher occurrence of erectile dysfunction (f = 10.594, p = 0.09) and to a lower percentage of consultations for this reason (x2 = 6.996, p = 0.012). Overweight/obese patients had a more aggressive result on the Gleason score (w = 151.5, p = 0.019). Differences were found between ultrasound and surgical specimen prostate volume (f = 10.324, p = 0.004). There were differences between the Gleason score result obtained from the biopsy and the surgical specimen (f = 23.330, p = 0.00001). Our results suggest that older age could be related to increased erectile dysfunction, that obesity could be related to more aggressive prostate cancer, and that there can be differences in the Gleason score between the biopsy and the final specimen. These findings suggest that the Gleason score results should be interpreted cautiously.

Prostate cancer is the second most frequent cancer in Spain. One of its main treatments is radical prostatectomy. This intervention generates a series of physical and psychological consequences in the patient that result in reducing their quality of life. The objective of this study was therefore to explore the experiences and perceptions of older adults about their quality of life after a radical prostatectomy. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted with 18 patients who had undergone a radical prostatectomy, with a mean age of 70.6 years. A focus group of 8 people was formed, and 10 individual interviews were carried out and transcribed in ATLAS.ti for later analysis. The quality of the criteria for qualitative research was guaranteed, and the pertinent ethical aspects were respected. Participants demonstrated worse urinary (incontinence) and sexual (erectile dysfunction) function after radical prostatectomy. Due to these consequences, they manifested shame, despair and relationship problems (lack of communication, absence of sexual life, etc.), thus causing a clear decrease in their quality of life. The participants also stated that they did not feel well-protected by the health care received. The physical sequelae on urinary and erectile function of prostatectomized patients decrease the patient’s quality of life. These limitations in their sexual life cause them additional psychological consequences that also contribute to a deterioration in the perceived quality of life. In a social environment, patients can find understanding and freedom to share feelings, which contributes to improving their quality of life. However, pressure and lack of communication can appear in the couple, which is perceived as a source of deterioration in quality of life. The care conditions in the health system are not appropriate to address the quality of life of this type of patient in a comprehensive manner.

Background and aimsPediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survival rates in low- and middle-income countries are lower due to deficiencies in multilevel factors, including access to timely diagnosis, risk-stratified therapy, and comprehensive supportive care. This retrospective study aimed to analyze outcomes for pediatric ALL at 16 centers in Mexico.MethodsPatients 0.9, with hyperdiploid ALL, and without substantial treatment modifications. In multivariable analyses, age and Day 15 MRD continued to have a significant effect on EFS.ConclusionOutcomes in this multi-institutional cohort describe poor outcomes, influenced by incomplete and inconsistent risk stratification, early toxic death, high on-treatment mortality, and high CNS relapse rate. Adopting comprehensive risk-stratification strategies, evidence-informed de-intensification for favorable-risk patients and optimized supportive care could improve outcomes.

La hernia hiatal gigante consiste en el desplazamiento hacia el tórax de más del 30 % del estómago, lo que origina una protrusión anormal por encima de la pinza diafragmática. Esto puede ocurrir por varios mecanismos como la aparición de alteraciones a nivel de la unión gastroesofágica o por atrofia diafragmática, que puede darse por varias razones como cambios involutivos, traumatismos extensos o daños ocasionados al nervio frénico. La mayoría de casos suelen ser asintomáticos, sin embargo, cuando se presentan manifestaciones clínicas, estas varían dependiendo del tamaño que presente la herniación, y van desde dolor torácico (también epigástrico), náuseas, vómitos o distensión abdominal. En caso de presentar complicaciones como vólvulo gástrico o úlceras de Cameron, los síntomas incluyen la tríada de Borchardt, que consta de dolor y distensión abdominal, vómitos violentos y dificultad para pasar la sonda nasogástrica. Se presenta el caso de un paciente masculino de 82 años que ingresó por emergencia por presentar dolor abdominal intenso, hematemesis abundante y trastorno del sensorio. En el examen físico se observa una facies pálida y diaforesis; a la palpación, el indicativo principal es el dolor abdominal en la zona epigástrica. Se solicita endoscopia de emergencia, que revela una úlcera profunda con bordes congestivos y sangrado activo en la porción inferior del esófago, además de observar también que parte del fondo gástrico y el cardias se hernian hacia el tórax. Esto confirmó el diagnóstico de una hernia hiatal gigante, sin embargo, el tratamiento es interrumpido por el paciente al pedir el alta voluntaria tras negarse a una intervención quirúrgica.

Objetivo: Estudiar la especie Chrysobalanus Icaco como alternativa de reforestación para manejo de erosión, teniendo en cuenta el potencial de la especie para la conservación y protección de suelos. Metodología: La metodología que manejó el estudio contempló métodos y técnicas inscritas en investigaciones de campo, descriptiva y correlacional. Resultados y conclusiones: El análisis indicó que la especie puede ser utilizada en el departamento para disminuir procesos erosivos. Sin embargo, las condiciones ambientales deben adecuarse con fertilizantes ricos en oligoelementos para la reforestación con Icaco con fines de aprovechamiento agroindustrial, manejo de erosión y conservación de la especie.

This study aimed to explore men’s experiences of social support after non-nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. A qualitative study based on Gadamer’s hermeneutic phenomenology was designed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 men who had undergone a non-nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. Data analysis was performed using ATLAS.ti software. From this analysis, two main themes emerged: “The partner as a source of support and conflict after a prostatectomy,” which includes empathetic reconnection with the partner and changes in sexual and cohabitation patterns and “The importance of social and professional circles,” which addresses the shortcomings of the healthcare system in terms of sexual information and counseling as well as the role of friends within social support. The study suggests the need to establish interventions that address interpersonal communication and attention to social and informational support and include both the patient and those closest to them.

Objective. To understand the meanings, feelings and practices associated with insecurity in a context with the presence of organized crime. Materials and methods. The study was conducted in a municipality of Tamaulipas, México, with high levels of violence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of thirty indirect victims. Interview transcriptions underwent computer-assisted qualitative analysis using the MAXQDA program. Results. Threatening situations and perceived causes of insecurity in the local context were identified. Various psychosocial consequences of insecurity and coping strategies are also described. Conclusions. Although the strategies used attempt to reduce the impact of insecurity on mental health, a transformation of mobility in public space and social relations is observed. Citizens handle insecurity at the individual level, even when it is attributed to structural causes.

En los últimos años, el parto por cesárea ha aumentado en relación al parto transpelviano a nivel mundial, lo cual constituye una problemática de salud, teniendo en cuenta su asociación con la morbimortalidad de las pacientes y el incremento de los costes que representa. En este trabajo, se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo en el Hospital Regional Doctor Verdi Cevallos Bal- da de la ciudad de Portoviejo, entre enero y diciembre de 2015, con el objetivo de determinar las indicaciones más frecuentes de la cesárea. El universo estuvo constituido por 3037 gestantes. La muestra fue de 1260 cesareadas que cumplieron con el criterio de inclusión como cesárea primiti- va, y de exclusión para las cesáreas iteradas y los partos transpelvianos. Los resultados mostraron que al 56,1% de las gestantes se les practicó cesárea. Dentro de los diagnósticos de la cesárea se observó predominio de la desproporción cefalopélvica con un 42,5% el compromiso de bienestar fetal con un 26,8% y la corioamnionitis un 0,1%, correspondiendo a las indicaciones maternas, fe- tales y ovulares respectivamente. Se concluyó que la indicación de cesárea, debe ser el resultado de una evaluación integral del estado maternofetal, sobre el que se decide la realización de este procedimiento quirúrgico.

Los modelos pedagógicos juegan un papel importante dentro de los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje; la pedagogía crítica brinda una serie de lineamientos que responden a la construcción de mejores vías en los modelos educativos, por ello, se busca desde las características de la pedagogía crítica identificar su utilidad en el fortalecimiento de la enseñanza problémica, específicamente en el campo del Derecho, con el objetivo de plantear un modelo pedagógico fortalecido y generador de procesos de construcción de conceptos desde la experiencia personal y la manera de entender la realidad para aplicar los conocimientos, es decir, adaptando la enseñanza y aprendizaje del Derecho a un escenario en que la teoría, la investigación y la práctica se conjuguen de manera efectiva.

Facebook, ha sido utilizado por varios autores como herramienta para potencializar la formación docente y estudiantil, así como la investigación educativa. En el Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud (C.U.C.S.) de la Universidad de Guadalajara, la formación filosófica juega un papel importante. Sin embargo, no se cuentan con datos precisos acerca de cómo simbolizan al filósofo sus estudiantes. Por lo anterior, los objetivos de esta investigación fueron conocer cómo estos simbolizan al filósofo, a través de un instrumento aplicado mediante Facebook, para generar estrategias de aprendizaje que apoyen a la construcción de saberes filosóficos en estos profesionales. Se partió del interaccionismo simbólico de Blumer (1982). La metodología utilizada fue de tipo cualitativa, con un diseño descriptivo transversal.

Based on previous research projects at the Universidad de la Salle Social Work Program (between 2012 and 2014) on policies, discourses, and practices about memory, reparation, and peace, conducted in teenagers who have been victims of the armed conflict, this article seeks to highlight some forms to approach suffering with this specific population group, considering justice, memory construction, and the policies for reparation and social integration.

A partir de los antecedentes investigativos1 adelantados por el Programa de Trabajo Social de la Universidad de la Salle (entre los años 2012 y 2014), en torno a las políticas, discursos y prácticas sobre la memoria, la reparación y la paz, con adolescentes víctimas del conflicto armado, el presente artículo se orienta a resaltar algunas formas de pensar el sufrimiento con este grupo de población, en las consideraciones de la justicia, la construcción de memoria y las políticas de reparación e integración social.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación que determina los efectos que el sistema de gestión de la calidad, certificado con la norma técnica NTC ISO 9001:2008, ha generado en la gestión de seis colegios de La Presentación en un lapso de seis años. Teóricamente se retoman postulados del Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia y de Elsa Castañeda (2010), en relación con la calidad en la educación y la certificación. La metodología incluye la definición de categorías para el análisis y cruce de variables. En el alcance se incorporan los factores de eficiencia económica, los niveles de conocimiento, de aceptación y de resistencia en la comunidad; los beneficios y las estrategias de mejoramiento continuo para el direccionamiento estratégico. Entre los efectos identificados se encuentran altos niveles de aceptación y conocimiento del sistema de gestión de la calidad, bajo nivel de resistencia relacionado con el trámite de la documentación; beneficios tangibles que redundan en la prestación del servicio educativo y factores de eficiencia económica del sistema reflejados en la sostenibilidad, la inversión, el enfoque al cliente, la toma de decisiones basada en hechos y una dinámica que integra la educación y la calidad. Para la comunidad religiosa reviste importancia, ya que establece resultados concretos que reflejan el estado del arte en el proceso y sirven como elementos de enriquecimiento conceptual para futuras investigaciones en las áreas de la calidad y la educación.

We report a rare case of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) of the oral mucosa. This neoplasm, known as Masson’s tumor, is an unusual vascular lesion of proliferating endothelial cells. It is usually confined to the lumen of preexisting vessels or vascular malformations. The principal significance of IPEH is its microscopic resemblance to angiosarcoma and possible misdiagnosis as such. Achieving a correct diagnosis is essential to avoid subjecting a patient to unnecessarily aggressive therapy. For this reason, awareness of this lesion is very important for dermatologists and dentists. In this article, we discuss the clinical features, histopathological characteristics, and management of IPEH and review the pertinent literature.
