Maize expressing Cry1Ab insecticidal toxin (Bt maize) is an effective method to control Sesamia nonagrioides and Ostrinia nubilalis, the most damaging corn borers of southern Europe. In this area, maize is prone to Fusarium infections, which can produce mycotoxins that pose a serious risk to human and animal health, causing significant economic losses in the agrifood industry. To investigate the influence of corn borer damage on the presence of Fusarium species and their mycotoxins, Bt maize ears and insect-damaged ears of non-Bt maize were collected from commercial fields in three Bt maize growing areas in Spain, and differences in contamination were assessed. Additionally, larvae of both borer species were collected to evaluate their role as vectors of these molds. Non-Bt maize ears showed significantly higher presence of F. verticillioides, F. proliferatum, and F. subglutinans than Bt maize ears. For the first time, Fusarium species have been isolated from larvae of the two species. The most frequently found mycotoxins in ears were fumonisins, with non-Bt ears being significantly more contaminated than those of Bt maize. High levels of fumonisins were shown to correlate with the occurrence of corn borers in the ear and the presence of F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum.

Este proyecto es continuación y ampliación del proyecto innova-docencia número 279 (2016), donde se hace un estudio piloto con estudiantes que cursan Trabajos de Fin de Grado, Fin de Master y Practicum. Se realizó una tutorización a través de metodología coaching distribuidas en distintas sesiones, donde el alumnado desarrolla todo el proceso paso a paso. Previamente se hizo un cuestionario y posteriormente se le paso este mismo al final del proceso, para ver cómo había sido la evolución de estas clases. Resultó ser para el alumnado un aprendizaje importante en su carrera, no solo por lo que se refiere a la parte curricular, sino la parte más personal y de relación con los demás. Aunque se pretendía establecer unos pasos en el desarrollo de este tipo de trabajos académicos, fue también importante el poder recoger toda la información generada de cuestionarios, talleres, reflexiones y tests para llegar a montar las bases de una guía bien organizada y estructurada. Con este proyecto seguimos el actual, donde ya teníamos configurada una guía bien ordenada, pero queríamos darle más peso específico ampliando el proyecto, donde se volvió a trabajar con diferentes grupos, pero mejorando mucho todo el desarrollo de este tipo de trabajos una vez habíamos visto determinados errores, dificultades y otros problemas encontrados con anterioridad. Por lo tanto la guía se hizo más consistente y mejorada. Llegando a trabajarla no solo de forma física, sino que el alumnado pudiera tenerla colgada de forma virtual en el campus para que si en algún momento necesitara de ella pudiera hacer uso. Con este apoyo de la guía, era una forma de ser eficaces en el seguimiento de nuestros trabajos, ya que no solo servía como apoyo en el desarrollo de éstos, sino que también servían como indicadores de cuáles iban a ser los pasos posteriores y de ayuda en cada apartado. Con todo ello conseguimos que el alumnado conociera una metodología innovadora dentro del campo académico para hacer sus trabajos

The Small World Initiative (SWI) and Tiny Earth are a consolidated and successful education programs rooted in the USA that tackle the antibiotic crisis by a crowdsourcing strategy. Based on active learning, it challenges young students to discover novel bioactive-producing microorganisms from environmental soil samples. Besides its pedagogical efficiency to impart microbiology content in academic curricula, SWI promotes vocations in research and development in Experimental Sciences and, at the same time, disseminates the antibiotic awareness guidelines of the World Health Organization. We have adapted the SWI program to the Spanish academic environment by a pioneering hierarchic strategy based on service-learning that involves two education levels (higher education and high school) with different degrees of responsibility. Throughout the academic year, 23 SWI teams, each consisting of 3-7 undergraduate students led by one faculty member, coordinated off-campus programs in 22 local high schools, involving 597 high school students as researchers. Post-survey-based evaluation of the program reveals a satisfactory achievement of goals: acquiring scientific abilities and general or personal competences by university students, as well as promoting academic decisions to inspire vocations for science- and technology-oriented degrees in younger students, and successfully communicating scientific culture in antimicrobial resistance to a young stratum of society., Depto. de Microbiología y Parasitología, Fac. de Farmacia, TRUE, pub
