1. Neutrinoless double beta decay and lepton number violation at the LHC

Abstract

We compare the discovery potential of the LHC for lepton number violating (LNV) signals with the sensitivity of current and future double beta decay experiments, assuming 0\nu\beta\beta decay is dominated by heavy particle exchange. We consider charged scalar, leptoquark and diquark mechanisms of 0\nu\beta\beta-decay, covering the 0\nu\beta\beta-decay operators with both, the smallest and largest, possible rates. We demonstrate, if 0\nu\beta\beta-decay were found with a half-life below $10^{26}-10^{27}$ ys a positive signal should show up at the LHC, except for some particular cases of the leptoquark mechanism, and vice versa, if the LHC does not find any hints for LNV, a "short-range" explanation for a finite 0\nu\beta\beta-decay half-life will be ruled out in most cases. We argue, if a positive LNV signal were found at the LHC, it is possible to identify the dominant contribution to 0\nu\beta\beta. Abstract

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Abstract

This document presents the findings of a study on the presence of eosinophils and basophils in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) and non-bullous pemphigoid (NBP) skin. The study found that the number of eosinophils and basophils was significantly higher in BP lesional skin compared to BP perilesional skin and NBP skin. The activation of eosinophils and basophils in BP lesional skin was also observed. These findings suggest that eosinophils and basophils play an important role in the pathophysiology of BP and may contribute to the itch experienced by pemphigoid patients. Abstract

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a heritable skin blistering disease caused by variants in genes coding for proteins that secure cell–cell adhesion and attachment of the epidermis to the dermis. Interestingly, several proteins involved in inherited EB are also associated with autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBD). In this study, we present a long‐term follow‐up of 15 patients suffering from recessive dystrophic or junctional EB. From these patients, 62 sera were analysed for the presence of autoantibodies associated with AIBD. We show that patients suffering from recessive dystrophic EB (RDEB) are more susceptible to developing autoantibodies against skin proteins than patients suffering from junctional EB (70% vs. 20%, respectively). Interestingly, no correlation with age was observed. Most patients showed reactivity to Type XVII collagen/linear IgA bullous dermatosis autoantigen (n = 5; 33%), followed by BP230 (n = 4; 27%), Type VII collagen (n = 4; 27%) and laminin‐332 (n = 1; 7%).
