Globally, fresh vegetables are a crucial part of our lives and they provide most of the vitamins, minerals, and proteins, in short, every nutrition that a growing body need. They vary in colors like; red, green, and yellow but as our ancestors say that green vegetables are a must for every age. To identify the fresh vegetable that makes our body healthy and notion positive the proposed automatic multi-class vegetable classifier is used. In this paper, a framework based on a deep learning approach has been proposed for multi-class vegetable classification from scratch. The accuracy of the proposed model is further increased using the transfer-learning concept (DenseNet201). The whole process is divided into four modules; data collection and pre-processing, data splitting, CNN model training, and testing, and performance improvement using a pre-trained DenseNet201 network. Data augmentation and data shuffling are used to free from lack of data availability during the training phase of the model. The proposed framework is more efficient and can predict the type of vegetables comparatively in less computational time (2 to 3 minutes) with an ‘Accuracy’ of 98.58%, ‘Sensitivity’ of 98.23%, and ‘Specificity’ of 94.25%.

The elastic moduli of 60V2O5- (40-x) BaO-xLi2O where x = 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 (mol%) glass system was analyzed and correlated with the physical properties of glass-like molar volume and average stretching force constant. This was done to understand how the rigidity of glass is affected by the variation in Li2O content in the glass samples. This study involves the application of Makishima-Mackenzie’s theory to calculate the elastic constants of glass, like Young’s modulus, Bulk modulus, Modulus of rigidity and Poisson’s ratio and correlate them to the structural modifications in the glass with the addition of alkali oxide (Li2O) in the glass system at the expense of alkaline-earth oxide (BaO). This work was done to understand how the variation in the composition of glass affects its rigidity and elastic properties which in turn affects its structure. This study helped to tweak the mechanical properties of the current glass system by varying their chemical composition. It was found that glass with 30% Li2O has the highest value of elastic constants and therefore, maximum mechanical strength.

AtUSP17 is a multiple stress-inducible gene that encodes a universal stress protein (USP) in Arabidopsis thaliana. In the present study, we functionally characterized AtUSP17 using its knock-down mutant, Atusp17, and AtUSP17-overexpression lines (WTOE). The overexpression of AtUSP17 in wild-type and Atusp17 mutant Arabidopsis plants resulted in higher sensitivity to salt stress during seed germination than WT and Atusp17 mutant lines. In addition, the WTOE and FC lines exhibited higher abscisic acid (ABA) sensitivity than Atusp17 mutant during germination. The exogenous application of ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) was able to rescue the salt hypersensitive phenotype of WTOE lines. In contrast, AgNO

Background: Vaccine hesitancy is of considerable concern as it threatens the great potential of a vaccine against COVID-19. Community health workers (CHWs) bridge the gap between the community and the health care system. Their intention to get vaccinated will not only affect them but will also affect the community’s perception of the vaccine. This study aims to understand the intention to get vaccinated against COVID-19 among community health care workers in India and its determinants.Methods: A web-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 357 community health workers using snowball sampling. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was shared with study participants across major geographical regions in India through social media during the first wave (November-December 2020).Results: Among 357 community health workers, 208 (58%) responded positively regarding their intention to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Graduate [aOR 2.26 (95% CI: 1.27-4.01), p=0.006] and post-graduate participants [aOR 2.85 (95% CI: 1.43-5.68), p=0.003], those with lower risk perception [aOR 1.86 (95% CI: 1.03-3.35), p=0.038] and respondents who trusted the healthcare system [aOR 2.60 (95% CI:1.59-4.26), pConclusions: Increasing knowledge regarding the COVID-19 vaccine might not be enough to improve vaccine acceptance rates. Enhancing trust among community health workers in the healthcare system and regarding the available vaccines seem necessary. In addition, targeted interventions addressing socio-demographic determinants related to COVID-19 vaccination should help improve acceptance of the vaccine.

Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread across the globe; and surprisingly, no potentially protective or therapeutic antiviral molecules are available to treat severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. However, zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) have been shown to exert protective effects due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. Therefore, it is hypothesized that supplementation with Zn and Cu alone or as an adjuvant may be beneficial with promising efficacy and a favorable safety profile to mitigate symptoms, as well as halt progression of the severe form of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The objective of this review is to discuss the proposed underlying molecular mechanisms and their implications for combating SARS-CoV-2 infection in response to Zn and Cu administration. Several clinical trials have also included the use of Zn as an adjuvant therapy with dietary regimens/antiviral drugs against COVID-19 infection. Overall, this review summarizes that nutritional intervention with Zn and Cu may offer an alternative treatment strategy by eliciting their virucidal effects through several fundamental molecular cascades, such as, modulation of immune responses, redox signaling, autophagy, and obstruction of viral entry and genome replication during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Universal stress proteins (USPs) are stress-responsive proteins conserved among various organisms, including bacteria, plants and metazoans. However, in plants, the function of most of the USPs remains largely unknown. In the present study, we have identified 53 USP domain-containing proteins encoded by 41 genes in the Arabidopsis genome. Based on the presence of additional protein kinase or tyrosine kinase domain, the nomenclature has been provided to these proteins. Comprehensive in silico expression profiling of AtUSPs under various developmental stages revealed that most of the genes are expressed in a tissue-specific manner. Under abiotic stresses, AtUSP9 and AtUSP12 were identified as multi-stress responsive in both shoot and root tissues. Interestingly, AtUSP9 was also induced under various pathogens and elicitor treatments. The expression analysis of USP genes under abiotic stresses using qRT-PCR correlated well with in silico expression analysis. Thus, the present study provides a blueprint for the functional characterization of AtUSPs to ascertain their role under stress conditions. Moreover, AtUSP9 and AtUSP12 may also be used to engineer plants with improved tolerance against multiple stresses.

An apple gene, MdDREB76 encodes a functional transcription factor and imparts salinity and drought stress endurance to transgenic tobacco by activating expression of stress-responsive genes. The dehydration-responsive element (DRE)-binding protein (DREB) transcription factors are well known to be involved in regulating abiotic stress-mediated gene expression in plants. In this study, MdDREB76 gene was isolated from apple (Malus x domestica), which encodes a functional transcription factor protein. Overexpression of MdDREB76 in tobacco conferred salt and drought stress tolerance to transgenic lines by inducing antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase. The higher membrane stability index, relative water content, proline, total soluble sugar content and lesser H2O2content, electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation in transgenics support the improved physiological status of transgenic plants as compared to WT plants under salinity and drought stresses. The MdDREB76 overexpression upregulated the expression of stress-responsive genes that provide salinity and drought stress endurance to the plants. Compared to WT plants, transgenic lines exhibited healthy growth and higher yield under stress conditions. The present study reports MdDREB76 as a key regulator that switches on the battery of downstream genes which impart salt and osmotic stress endurance to the transgenic plants and can be used for genetic engineering of crop plants to combat salinity and drought stresses.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a pandemic disease which has affected more than 6.2 million people globally, with numbers mounting considerably daily. However, till date, no specific treatment modalities are available for Covid-19 and also not much information is known about this disease. Recent studies have revealed that SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with the generation of thrombosis and coagulopathy. Fundamentally, it has been believed that a diverse array of signalling pathways might be responsible for the activation of coagulation cascade during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Henceforth, a detailed understanding of these probable underlying molecular mechanistic pathways causing thrombosis in Covid-19 disease deserves an urgent exploration. Therefore, in this review, the hypothetical crosstalk between distinct signalling pathways including apoptosis, inflammation, hypoxia and angiogenesis attributable for the commencement of thrombotic events during SARS-CoV-2 infection has been addressed which might further unravel promising therapeutic targets in Covid-19 disease.

Rhomboids are intramembrane serine proteases with diverse physiological functions in organisms ranging from archaea to humans. Crystal structure analysis has provided a detailed understanding of the catalytic mechanism, and rhomboids have been implicated in various disease contexts. Unfortunately, the design of specific rhomboid inhibitors has lagged behind, and previously described small molecule inhibitors displayed insufficient potency and/or selectivity. Using a computer-aided approach, we focused on the discovery of novel scaffolds with reduced liabilities and the possibility for broad structural variations. Docking studies with the E. coli rhomboid GlpG indicated that 2-styryl substituted benzoxazinones might comprise novel rhomboid inhibitors. Protease in vitro assays confirmed activity of 2-styryl substituted benzoxazinones against GlpG but not against the soluble serine protease α-chymotrypsin. Furthermore, mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated covalent modification of the catalytic residue Ser201, corroborating the predicted mechanism of inhibition and the formation of an acyl enzyme intermediate. In conclusion, 2-styryl substituted benzoxazinones are a novel rhomboid inhibitor scaffold with ample opportunity for optimization.

The visualization experiments for measuring departure diameter and frequency of vapor bubbles in the saturated nucleate boiling of distilled water have been carried out at atmospheric pressure. The experiments were carried out for an isolated single cylindrical tube and that for a tube bundle under pool and cross flow boiling conditions. The test setup was a stainless steel cuboidal tank of dimensions 400 mm × 200 mm × 180 mm provided with a 5 × 3 staggered tube bundle with an equilateral triangular pitch of 1.95. The departure diameter and frequency were measured using a high-speed camera to understand the parametric behavior of the bubble departure characteristics in a tube bundle under pool and cross flow condition. The range of operating conditions was: (1) heat flux q ″ = 8 − 28 k W / m 2 , (2) wall superheat Δ T s a t = 7 − 22 K , (3) inlet mass flux G = 120 − 303.5 kg / m 2 s . The departure diameter and frequency were found to increase with an increase in the heat flux, but decrease with an increase in the mass flow rate. The local departure diameter and frequency were observed to increase as the neighboring tubes in the bundle were successively heated. Empirical correlations have been developed for departure diameter and frequency for saturated nucleate boiling under cross flow conditions incorporating the effect of the tube bundle. The correlations were found to predict experimental data within acceptable limit.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized mainly by the gradual decay in neuronal function as a consequence of diverse degenerating events primarily including mitochondria dysfunction and cascades of neuro-immune reactions. Besides the acquired harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), neurotoxins, and amyloid-beta (Aβ) and TAU pathologies in neurons, accumulating evidence with time underlined the roles of cytokines and growth factors in the AD pathogenesis. It may help us in evaluating the propensities and specific mechanism(s) of cytokines and factors impacting neuron upon apoptotic decline. Proinflammatory cytokines often induce inflammation in AD and AD-like pathogenesis in response to the apoptotic scenarios where some growth factors are involved in cytokinetic reactions to activate microglia and causing inflammation in AD. In this report, we comprehensively reviewed role of cytokines and chemokines in immune response to AD and neuropsychiatry. We provided insights into the neuroinflammation and the role of diverse factors including the pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokines, APP, TAU phosphorylation, glycation end products, complement system, and the role of glial cells. Also, we discussed the pathogenic and protective role of macrophage migration inhibitory factors, choroid plexus-, neurotrophic- and hematopoietic -related growth factors in AD. We further shed light on the availability and accessibility of the cytokines across the blood-brain barrier in AD pathophysiology. Taken together, the emerging role of these factors in AD pathology emphasized the importance of building novel strategies for an effective therapeutic/neuropsychiatric management of AD in clinics.

Consumers constitute one of the most important elements of marketing environment. Understanding their sentiments towards marketing practices is a sine qua non for the development of effective marketing strategies, thus garnering their patronage, and attaining improved business performance. Based on Gaski and Etzel’s (1986) framework, the present study attempts to investigate consumer sentiments towards marketing in India and compare the results with those of consumers in select other countries. Analysis of the data collected through a survey of consumers located in Delhi and the NCR region reveals consumers to be holding moderately favourable opinion that business firms pursue customer-oriented business philosophy. As regards marketing mix elements, retailing/selling emerges as the element towards which consumers have expressed the most positive sentiments. Practices in relation to advertising and product come next in order of favourability in consumer perceptions. Pricing is the variable for which consumers appear holding the least favourable opinion. In overall terms, though the consumer sentiments towards marketing in India are found only moderately favourable, these turn out to be relatively much more favourable when compared with those of consumers in other countries.

Visualization experiments in upward forced convective nucleate boiling flows were carried out. The bubble growth and collapse have been measured using high-speed photography technique with distilled water under atmospheric pressure. The experiments show that the bubbles depart from nucleating sites shortly after nucleation and slide along the heater surface. The bubbles grow while sliding, attain a maximum size, then lift from the surface sometime during condensation, and quickly vanish in the bulk liquid. Parametric studies show that bubble diameter and departure frequency increases with an increase in heat flux, a decrease in subcooling, and a decrease in mass flux.

The boiling models use departure diameter and frequency in closure relations for the calculation of nucleate boiling heat flux. These parameters are normally derived from empirical correlations which depend heavily on experiments. While these parameters are studied mostly for saturated conditions, there is not sufficient data for the values of departure diameter and frequency in subcooled boiling. In this work, the bubble departure characteristics, i.e. the departure diameters and frequency have been measured using high speed visualization experiments with subcooled demineralized water at atmospheric pressure for nucleate pool boiling conditions. The water pool dimensions were 300 mm × 135 mm × 250 mm with four different heating elements to carry out the parametric studies of bubble departure behavior. The considered parameters were heater surface roughness, heater geometry and heater inclination along with the experimental conditions like degree of subcooling (ΔTsub = 5−20 K), superheat (ΔTsat = 1−10 K) and the heat flux. The departure diameters and frequencies were directly measured from the images captured. It was intended to generate the subcooled nucleate pool boiling data under a wide range of conditions which are not present in the literature. The departure diameter was found to increase with the wall superheat, heater size and the inclination angle while the liquid subcooling and surface roughness produced a damping effect on the diameter. The departure frequency was found to increase with the wall superheat and the inclination angle, but decreases with an increase in the heater size. The frequency increases with the degree of subcooling except very close to the saturation, and is unaffected by the surface roughness beyond a certain superheat value.

Iron is one of essential micronutrient for all organisms. Its deficiency causes a severe loss in crops yield. Nevertheless, our current understanding on major crops response to Fe deficiency remains limited. Herein, we investigated the effect of Fe deprivation at both transcriptomic and metabolic levels in hexaploid wheat. A genome-wide gene expression reprogramming was observed with a total of 5854 genes showing differential expression in roots of wheat subjected to Fe-starved medium. Subsequent, analysis revealed a predominance of strategy-II mode of Fe uptake, with induced genome bias contribution from the A and B genomes. In general, the predominance of genes encoding for nicotianamine synthase, yellow stripe like transporters, metal transporters, ABC transporters and zinc-induced facilitator-like protein was noticed. Our transcriptomic data were in agreement with the GC-MS analysis that showed an enhancement of accumulation of various metabolites such as fumarate, malonate, succinate and xylofuranose, which could be linked for enhancing Fe-mobilization. Interestingly, Fe starvation causes a significant temporal increase of glutathione-S-transferase both at transcriptional and enzymatic activity, which indicate the important role of glutathione in the response to Fe starvation in wheat roots. Taken together, our result provides new insight on wheat response to Fe starvation and lays foundation to design strategies to improve Fe nutrition in crops.

Drought and salinity are the most common environmental stresses that cause major loss to crop productivity. To combat such stresses and to satisfy the world food demand, it is desired to develop stress tolerant crop plants. To date, transgenic approach, mainly by overexpressing stress-responsive transcription factors (TFs) is highly appreciated. TFs can activate large set of genes that participate towards multiple stress response. TFs are thus considered as potential candidates for developing stress tolerant plants. Most of the TFs, which play important role in abiotic stress tolerance in plants, fall into major TF families namely AP2/EREBP, NAC, MYB/MYC, WRKY, bZIP, bHLH and ZFP etc. In the current chapter, we have discussed the role of major TF families in enhancing salt and/or drought tolerance in plants. Additionally, we have also discussed the importance of multiple-stress responsive promoters in engineering plants with sustainable abiotic stress tolerance.

Background: Unreliable and ingenuine results issued by clinical laboratories have serious consequences for the patients. Sigma metrics is a standardized tool for Quality assessment for test performance in a laboratory. Objective: To evaluate the performance of routine biochemistry laboratory at MMIMSR, Mullana in terms of Sigma metrics and Quality Goal Index. Material and methods: This cross sectional study evaluated performance of 14 routine chemistry parameters using retrospective Internal Quality Control data of two levels on Siemens Dimension Rxl from Feb to Jul 2019 for CV% and EQAS reports from CMC, Vellore for Bias%. Sigma metrics was calculated using total allowable error targets as per CLIA and Biological Variability database guidelines. Results: For level-2 IQC; TG, Chol, ALP showed excellent performance with σ ​> ​6 while σ ​ ​6. Further by using Biological Variability data guidelines; 10 parameters of IQC Level-2 and 5 of IQC level-3 were poor performers with σ ​

Measles is a leading cause of child mortality, and reduction of child mortality is a key Millennium Development Goal. In 2014, the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed a measles programmatic risk assessment tool to support country measles elimination efforts. The tool was pilot tested in the State of Uttarakhand in August 2014 to assess its utility in India. The tool assessed measles risk for the 13 districts of Uttarakhand as a function of indicator scores in four categories: population immunity, surveillance quality, program delivery performance, and threat. The highest potential overall score was 100. Scores from each category were totaled to assign an overall risk score for each district. From this risk score, districts were categorized as low, medium, high, or very high risk. Of the 13 districts in Uttarakhand in 2014, the tool classified one district (Haridwar) as very high risk and three districts (Almora, Champawat, and Pauri Garhwal) as high risk. The measles risk in these four districts was largely due to low population immunity from high MCV1-MCV2 drop-out rates, low MCV1 and MCV2 coverage, and the lack of a supplementary immunization activity (SIA) within the past three years. This tool can be used to support measles elimination in India by identifying districts that might be at risk for measles outbreaks, and to guide risk mitigation efforts, including strengthening routine immunization services and implementing SIAs.

Copper is a vital micronutrient for plant growth and development, but in high concentration it leads to the oxidative damage thereby initiating biosynthesis of jasmonic acid (JA). The JA signalling is mediated by various transcription factors (TFs) such as JAZ and MYC2. JAZ TFs are the negative regulators of JA signalling which are degraded in presence of JA. JAZ proteins belong to TIFY family and regulate various biological processes such as plant development, response to phytohormones, biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, we identified 18 TIFY family proteins in pigeonpea, which are further classified into TIFY, JAZ and ZML subfamilies. Gene expression of 12 CcTIFY genes in pigeonpea was studied under methyl jasmonate (Me-JA), JA in presence and absence of copper (Cu). Our results showed that the transcript levels of CcTIFY3, CcTIFY4, CcTIFY5, CcTIFY9 and CcTIFY16 were upregulated under Cu stress, indicating their involvement in Cu stress signalling. The presence of defense and stress responsive cis-regulatory elements in the promoter regions of these genes further confirms their involvement in response to Cu stress. Apart from feedback regulation of JAZ proteins, the expression of CcTIFY3 and CcTIFY9 was observed to be upregulated in Me-JA and JA treatment, respectively, which suggest involvement of alternative JA and Me-JA signalling.

In this communication we report the fluorine ion dynamics in mixed alkali oxyfluro vanadate glasses. We have measured the electrical conductivity using impedance spectroscopy technique Room temperature conductivity falls to 5 orders of magnitude from its single alkali values at 33 mol% of rubidium concentration. We have also estimated the distance between similar mobile ions using the density values. Assuming this distance as the hopping distance between the similar ions we have estimated the anionic (Fluorine ion in our case) conductivity. It is observed that the fluorine ion dynamics mimics the mixed alkali effect and scales as the onset frequency f0., submitted to DAE-SSDP 2018 India

Nitrate is the main source of inorganic nitrogen for plants, which also act as signaling molecule. Present study was aimed to understand nitrate regulatory mechanism in Brassica juncea cultivars, with contrasting nitrogen-use-efficiency (NUE) viz. Pusa Bold (PB, high-NUE) and Pusa Jai Kisan (PJK, low-NUE), employing RNA-seq approach. A total of 4031, 3874 and 3667 genes in PB and 2982, 2481 and 2843 genes in PJK were differentially expressed in response to early, low (0.25 mM KNO3), medium (2 mM KNO3) and high (4 mM KNO3) nitrate treatments, respectively, as compared to control (0 mM KNO3). Genes of N-uptake (NRT1.1, NRT1.8, and NRT2.1), assimilation (NR1, NR2, NiR, GS1.3, and Fd-GOGAT) and remobilization (GDH2, ASN2–3 and ALaT) were highly-upregulated in PB than in PJK in response to early nitrate treatments. We have also identified transcription factors and protein kinases that were rapidly induced in response to nitrate, suggesting their involvement in nitrate-mediated signaling. Co-expression network analysis revealed four nitrate specific modules in PB, enriched with GO terms like, “Phenylpropanoid pathway”, “Nitrogen compound metabolic process” and “Carbohydrate metabolism”. The network analysis also identified HUB transcription factors like mTERF, FHA, Orphan, bZip and FAR1, which may be the key regulators of nitrate-mediated response in B. juncea.

Oligopeptide transporters (OPT) are integral cell membrane proteins that play a critical role in the transport of small peptides, secondary amino acids, glutathione conjugates, and mineral uptake. In the present study, 67 putative wheat yellow stripe-like transporter (YSL) proteins belonging to the subfamily of OPT transporters were identified. Phylogeny analysis resulted in the distribution of wheat YSLs into four discrete clades. The highest number of YSLs was present on the A genome and the chromosome 2 of hexaploid wheat. The identified wheat YSL genes showed differential expression in different tissues and during grain development suggesting the importance of this subfamily. Gene expression pattern of TaYSLs during iron starvation experiments suggested an early high transcript accumulation of TaYS1A, TaYS1B, TaYSL3, TaYSL5, and TaYSL6 in roots. In contrast, delayed expression was observed in shoots for TaYS1A, TaYS1B, TaYSL5, TaYSL12, and TaYSL19 as compared to control. Further, their expression under biotic and abiotic response emphasized their alternative functions during the plant growth and development. In conclusion, this work is the first comprehensive study of wheat YSL transporters and would be an important resource for prioritizing genes towards wheat biofortification.

Plants differ from animals by lacking the ability to escape from their environmental conditions. Plants adapt to the seasonal as well as nonseasonal perturbations by means of stress-responsive genes. Manipulation of such genes has been shown to provide abiotic stress tolerance in plants. Since abiotic stress is a polygenic trait, overexpression of single stress-responsive gene would not serve the purpose of getting stress-tolerant plants. So, the focus needs to be shifted towards the “master regulators” which are critical for plant growth and development and play an important role in integrating various stress signals and controlling downstream stress responses by modulating gene expression machinery. In plants, there are various second messengers including calcium, ROS, phosphoinositides, cyclic nucleotides, etc., which are known to initiate the downstream signaling cascade leading to response against different, multiple, and simultaneous ambient cues. A better understanding of these elements will allow us to engineer a particular stress-responsive pathway, to achieve better stress-tolerant plants.

Plants encounter an array of abiotic stresses throughout their life cycle. In the past few decades, understanding the complex molecular mechanisms of plant responses to abiotic stresses has been the major focus of research for plant scientists. For enhancing stress tolerance in plants, conventional breeding approaches were the early strategies, but with low success rates. The transgenic approach has emerged as the most promising approach of plant biotechnology for developing stress-tolerant crops. Under field conditions, plants can encounter multiple abiotic stresses, thus it is necessary to develop plants with multiple-stress tolerance. This can be achieved by transferring single genes with multiple roles, such as transcription factors, or by transferring multiple genes simultaneously into a plant system. This chapter highlights the potential of single- and multiple-gene transfer approaches in enhancing abiotic stress tolerance in plants. Moreover, we also discuss the limitations associated with these approaches and the prospects for improving them.

Rhomboids are intramembrane serine proteases and belong to the group of structurally and biochemically most comprehensively characterized membrane proteins. They are highly conserved and ubiquitously distributed in all kingdoms of life and function in a wide range of biological processes, including epidermal growth factor signaling, mitochondrial dynamics, and apoptosis. Importantly, rhomboids have been associated with multiple diseases, including Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, and malaria. However, despite a thorough understanding of many structural and functional aspects of rhomboids, potent and selective inhibitors of these intramembrane proteases are still not available. In this study, we describe the computer-based rational design, chemical synthesis, and biological evaluation of novel N-methylene saccharin-based rhomboid protease inhibitors. Saccharin inhibitors displayed inhibitory potency in the submicromolar range, effectiveness against rhomboids both in vitro and in live Escherichia coli cells, and substantially improved selectivity against human serine hydrolases compared to those of previously known rhomboid inhibitors. Consequently, N-methylene saccharins are promising new templates for the development of rhomboid inhibitors, providing novel tools for probing rhomboid functions in physiology and disease.

Universal stress proteins (USPs) are known to be expressed in response to various abiotic stresses in a wide variety of organisms, such as bacteria, archaebacteria, protists, algae, fungi, plants, and animals. However, in plants, biological function of most of the USPs still remains obscure. In the present study, Arabidopsis USP gene (AtUSP) showed induction in response to abscisic acid (ABA) and various abiotic stresses viz. heat, dehydration, salt, osmotic, and cold stresses. Additionally, in silico analysis of AtUSP promoter identified several cis-elements responsive to phytohormones and abiotic stresses such as ABRE, ERE, DRE, and HSE, etc. To functionally validate the AtUSP promoter, the 1115 bp region of promoter was characterized under phytohormone and abiotic stress treatments. Deletion analysis of promoter was carried out by cloning the full length promoter (D0) and its three 5′ deletion derivatives, D1 (964 bp), D2 (660 bp), and D3 (503 bp) upstream of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, which were then stably transformed in Arabidopsis plants. The AtUSP promoter (D0) showed minimal activity under non-stress conditions which was enhanced in response to phytohormone treatments (ABA and ACC) and abiotic stresses such as dehydration, heat, cold, salt, and osmotic stresses. The seedlings harboring D1 and D2 deletion fragments showed constitutive GUS expression even under control condition with increased activity almost under all the treatments. However, D3 seedlings exhibited complete loss of activity under control condition with induction under ACC treatment, dehydration, heat, oxidative, salt, and osmotic stresses. Thus, present study clearly showed that AtUSP promoter is highly inducible by phytohormones and multiple abiotic stresses and it can be exploited as stress inducible promoter to generate multi-stress tolerant crops with minimal effects on their other important traits.

The Indian marketplace has undergone significant changes since the time reforms were introduced in the country in the early 1990s. As against the era of shortages and limited product choice, the market in virtually all the product categories is currently cramped with a plethora of product variants and multiple brands. Consumerism is on the rise as is the case with the government interventions in the marketplace. Consumerism life cycle theory predicts consumers at more advanced stages of market development to be holding a positive view of the business firms’ marketing philosophy, reduced need for consumerism and government regulations with developments in the marketplace. In view of a lack of empirical database in the country in this respect, the present study seeks to ascertain empirically the nature and extent of consumers’ attitudes towards business firms’ marketing philosophy and need for a consumerism movement and government regulations in protecting consumer interests in the country.

Background: Prolactin secretion is controlled by prolactin inhibitor factor that is secreted from hypothalamus; factors like vasoactive inhibitory peptide (VIP) and thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) lead to increase in prolactin secretion. Hyperprolactinemia is a common condition that can result from a number of causes including hypothyroidism. Objective of the study was to determine correlation between serum levels of prolactin and thyroid hormones in euthyroid, subclinical and overt hypothyroid cases. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients presenting for various thyroid related problems were segregated into two groups subclinical and overt hypothyroidism according to their diagnosis based on history and clinical examination, laboratory reports, inclusion and exclusion criteria. Newly diagnosed 75 patients in each group were finally enrolled. Similar number of age and sex matched controls were selected. All subjects filled a predesigned questionnaire for the evaluation of hypothyroid symptoms. Thyroid profile for T3, T4 (total and free), TSH and prolactin were determined in all the subjects and analyzed. Results: Prolactin elevation was found in 16 patients (21.33 %) with overt hypothyroidism, and in six patients (8%) with subclinical hypothyroidism. The control group and subclinical hypothyroid patients exhibited no significant difference in terms of total and free T3, total and free T4. For TSH and prolactin on the other hand, a statistically significant elevation was found in patients with overt hypothyroidism when compared with subclinical hypothyroidism; and in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism when compared to the controls. A significant statistical difference was observed between the two groups of hypothyroid patients for all hypothyroid symptoms except alopecia and hirsuitism. Conclusion: The incidence of hyperprolactinemia in hypothyroidism was found to be higher when compared with normal controls. Serum prolactin assessment should be performed on all patients with hypothyroidism (overt and subclinical) before performing further tests.

Purpose To analyze the results of clear lens extraction (CLE) with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to correct hyperopia. Setting Eye Research Center and Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai, India. Methods This prospective study comprised 20 hyperopic eyes of 12 patients between 19 and 50 years who had CLE with posterior chamber IOL implantation. Five patients had peripheral iridectomy during CLE as the angles were occludable. The mean hyperopic spherical equivalent refraction was +6.66 diopters (D) ± 2.17 (SD) (range +4.75 to +13.00 D). The IOL power was calculated using the Holladay 2 formula. The mean follow-up was 16.96 months (range 6 to 35 months). Results The mean postoperative uncorrected visual acuity was 0.45 ± 0.25 (range 0.10 to 1.00), a mean improvement of 3 Snellen lines from preoperatively. The mean postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.63 ± 0.30, a mean improvement of 1 Snellen line. Three patients gained 2 lines of BCVA and 2 patients, 1 line. One patient lost 1 line of BCVA. Seventy percent of patients were within ±0.50 D of the intended refraction. Conclusion The results indicate that CLE with posterior chamber IOL implantation is safe, predictable, and effective.

Actinomycosis is an infectious disease characterized by chronic granulomatous and suppurative lesions often caused by Actinomyces group. Actinomycosis has been referred to as the chameleon of head and neck pathology because of its varied clinical picture which can resemble various pathologies ranging from benign infection to metastatic tumour. Nowadays, the diagnosis of the same may be difficult because the number of patients with typical symptoms has decreased, and there is a low success rate in culturing the microorganism. Mandibular osteomyelitis is also underappreciated by many clinicians in their assessment of head and neck infections. Most cases are traced to an odontogenic source, with periapical tooth abscess and posttraumatic or surgical complication as key antecedent events. A case of osteomyelitis of mandible initiated from a vital but peridontally compromised tooth is reported. Radiography of this case revealed bone destruction, and H & E of the biopsied tissue showed branching filaments resembling ray fungus.

The present study investigates the effects of homogenizer pressure, surfactant concentration, ionic strength, and dispersed phase fraction on the coalescence rate of tetradecane-in-water emulsions during their formation in a high-pressure homogenizer. Experiments were conducted in a recirculating system consisting of a Rannie laboratory-scale single-stage homogenizer and a stirred vessel for tetradecane-in-water emulsions stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The initial evolution of the number concentration of droplets in the stirred tank was measured when subjected to a negative stepchange in the homogenizer pressure. The average drop coalescence rate constant in the homogenizer was inferred by fitting the experimental evolution of the number concentration of drops to a simple model accounting for the coalescence in the homogenizer under the assumption of a quasi steady state in the homogenizer. The residence time of the emulsion in the homogenizer was evaluated from the analysis of radial turbulent flow between disks. The step down homogenizer pressure was varied in the range 20.7-48.3 MPa, the drop size in the range 174-209 nm, the dispersed phase fraction in the range 5%-15%, SDS concentration in the range 0.0033-0.25 wt%, and ionic strength in the range 0.01-0.1 M. The coalescence rate constants were found to be in the range from 3.34x10(-17) to 2.43x10(-16) m(3) s(-1). The coalescence rate constant was found to be higher for higher homogenizer pressures, smaller drop sizes, lower dispersed phase fractions, and lower SDS concentrations and was insensitive to variations in ionic strength. The purpose of fasting for Muslims is to learn self-restraint from indulgence in everyday pleasures, for self-discipline, to develop God-consciousness, to develop self-control, to purify the body, and to empathize with the poor and hungry. Muslims describe a feeling of inner peace and tranquillity. This involves restraining anger, doing good deeds, exercising personal discipline, and preparing one to serve as a good Muslim and a good person. One of the greatest advantages of fasting is that its true observance inculcates in a person a habit of speaking the truth. Fasting is a powerful therapeutic process that can help people recover from mild to severe health conditions.
