Abstract IEEE 802.15.4a networks can provide the geographic routing solution with high location accuracy for the indoor environments. However, in the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments, the IEEE 802.15.4a networks may have a large scale location error and an unstable communication link. In this article, we propose a location estimation and dynamic link detection scheme for the geographic routing in the NLOS environments. The proposed approach corrects the large scale location error and detects the NLOS link in the geographic routing procedure. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed approach can enhance the performance of the geographic routing.

High-manganese steel (high-Mn) is valuable for its excellent mechanical properties in cryogenic environments, making it essential to understand its deformation behavior at extremely low temperatures. The deformation behavior of high-Mn steels at extremely low temperatures depends on the stacking fault energy (SFE) that can lead to the formation of deformation twins or transform to ε-martensite or α'-martensite as the temperature decreases. In this study, submerged arc welding (SAW) was applied to fabricate thick pipes for cryogenic industry applications, but it may cause problems such as an uneven distribution of manganese (Mn) and a large weldment. To address these issues, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is performed to achieve a homogeneous microstructure, enhance mechanical properties, and reduce residual stress. It was found that the difference in Mn content between the dendrite and interdendritic regions was reduced after PWHT, and the SFE was calculated. At cryogenic temperatures, the SFE decreased below 20 mJ/m 2 , indicating the martensitic transformation region. Furthermore, an examination of the deformation behavior of welded high-Mn steels was conducted. This study revealed that the tensile deformed, as-welded specimens exhibited ε and α'-martensite transformations at cryogenic temperatures. However, the heat-treated specimens did not undergo α'-martensite transformations. Moreover, regardless of whether the specimens were subjected to Charpy impact deformation before or after heat treatment, ε and α'-martensite transformations did not occur.

Background: Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of Calnan's triad. However, in clinical practice, it is common for individuals to exhibit one or two anatomical abnormalities within the triad. Furthermore, the definition of SMCP has been diverse and ambiguous in literature. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the correlation between anatomical abnormalities and development of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI)., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 99 patients referred to our clinic for speech issues or anatomical abnormalities identified during routine oral examinations from January 2012 to June 2023. A single surgeon performed all physical examinations. We evaluated the presence of bony notch, zona pellucida, and bifid uvula, assigned a score to each abnormality, and analyzed their correlation with VPI. The correlation of each of the abnormalities with VPI development was examined, along with the relationship between the number of abnormalities and VPI., Results: Among the 99 patients, 27 were diagnosed with VPI. Only the bony notch had a significant correlation with VPI development. The incidence of VPI tended to increase with the presence of more anatomical abnormalities. CrAssphages are human gut bacteriophages with potential use as an indicator of human fecal contamination in water and other environmental systems. We determined the prevalence and abundance of crAssphages in water, food, and fecal samples and compared these estimates with the prevalence of norovirus. Samples were tested using two crAssphage-specific qPCR assays (CPQ056 and TN201-203) and for norovirus using TaqMan realtime RT-PCR. CrAssphage was detected in 40% of human fecal specimens, 61% of irrigation water samples, 58.5% of stream water samples, and 68.5% of fresh leafy greens samples. Interestingly, across all sample categories, crAssphage concentrations were 2-3 log10 higher than norovirus concentrations. The correlation of detection of crAssphage and norovirus was significant for the irrigation water samples ( r = 0.74, p = 7.4e-06). Sequences obtained from crAssphage positive samples from human fecal and stream water samples phylogenetically clustered with genotype I crAssphages, whereas sequences derived from irrigation water samples clustered differently from other genotypes. Our data show that crAssphages were prevalent in norovirus-positive water samples and in fresh leafy green samples, there was a strong correlation between the presence of crAssphage and norovirus. CrAssphage genomic copies were consistently higher than norovirus copies in all sample types. A laser power bed fusion (L-PBF) manufacturing process was optimized by analyzing the surface morphology and track width w of single scan tracks (SSTs) on Fe-3.4wt.%Si. An SST was evaluated under process conditions of laser power P , scan speed V , and energy density E = P / V . The SST surface shape was mainly affected by E ; desirable thin and regular tracks were obtained at E = 0.3 and 0.4 J/mm. An L-PBF process window was proposed considering the optimal w of SST, and the appropriate range of E for the alloy was identified to be 0.24 J/mm to 0.49 J/mm. w showed a strong relationship with E and V , and an analytic model was suggested. To verify the process window derived from the appropriate w of SST, cubic samples were manufactured with the estimated optimal process conditions. Most samples produced had a high density with a porosity of <1%, and the process window derived from SST w data had high reliability. This study presents a comprehensive approach to enhancing additive manufacturing for Fe-3.4Si alloy, offering valuable insights for achieving high-quality samples without the need for time-intensive procedures.

Purpose: This study investigates the usefulness of antegrade variceal embolization using sclerosant foam to evaluate technical success and clinical outcomes in cases of hypertensive variceal bleeding., Methods: A total of 16 patients underwent percutaneous antegrade variceal embolization using foam sclerotherapy from August 2019 to January 2022. Among the patients, 12 cases were of gastroesophageal varices, two were rectal varices, and one case each was duodenal and jejunal varices, respectively. Sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS) foam was used as a detergent for variceal bleeding sclerotherapy at various anatomical locations. The detergent was used in a foam form to promote clinical outcomes and enable the effective embolization of the entire blood vessel wall, including the ventral side, against gravity. Furthermore, STS foam could be used to help sufficiently deliver the drug to distal segments. A balloon catheter was also used to block the antegrade flow and prevent the dilution of the sclerosant. Technical success was defined as the completion of sclerotherapy for variceal bleeding as planned before the procedure to achieve the disappearance of variceal bleeding. Clinical success was defined as the complete obliteration of varices without recurrent bleeding during the follow-up period after the procedure., Results: Technical success was 81.3%, and clinical success was 84.6%. Additionally, 15/16 of the procedures were emergencies, and there were no complications related to the procedure., Conclusion: Antegrade foam sclerotherapy using 3% STS for variceal bleeding is clinically safe and effective. Moreover, antegrade foam sclerotherapy can be a useful treatment option for patients with active variceal bleeding in emergency cases.

Marigold ( Tagetes spp.) flower petals are the most vital sources of carotenoids, especially lutein esters, for the production of natural lutein to use for food, feed, and pharmaceutical industries. Several marigold cultivars are cultivated globally; however, their lutein ester composition and contents have not been widely investigated. Considering this, this study aimed to identify and quantify prominent carotenoid esters from the flower petals of ten marigold cultivars by liquid chromatography (LC)-diode-array detection (DAD)-mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, tocopherols, phytosterols, and fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)-flame ionization detection (FID) and GC-MS. Furthermore, the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS •+ ) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH • ) radical scavenging abilities of lipophilic extracts were determined. The total carotenoid contents varied significantly ( p < 0. 05, Tukey HSD) among cultivars, ranging from 25.62 ( cv. Alaska)-2723.11 µg/g fresh weight ( cv. Superboy Orange). Among the five major lutein-diesters, (all- E )-lutein-3- O -myristate-3'-O-palmitate and lutein dipalmitate were predominant. Among the studied cultivars, α-tocopherol was recorded, ranging from 167.91 ( cv. Superboy Yellow) to 338.50 µg/g FW ( cv. Taishan Orange). Among phytosterols, β-sitosterol was the most prevalent phytosterol, ranging between 127.08 ( cv . Superboy Yellow) and 191.99 µg/g FW ( cv . Taishan Yellow). Palmitic acid (C 16:0 ; 33.36-47.43%) was the most dominant among the fatty acids. In this study, the highest contents of lutein were recorded from cv. Superboy Orange; however, due to the substantially higher flower petal yield, the cv. Durango Red can produce the highest lutein yield of 94.45 kg/ha. These observations suggest that cv. Durango Red and cv. Superboy Orange are the ideal candidates for lutein fortification in foods and also for commercial lutein extraction.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental impact on many businesses worldwide, essential businesses, such as grocery stores, continued to operate despite potential disease transmission. Although the principal mode by which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is through exposure to respiratory droplets and very small particles carrying infectious virus, contaminated surfaces might play a role in transmission. We collected swab samples from frequently touched surfaces, including grocery carts, touchscreen monitors, credit card keypads, pharmacy counters, self-service food utensils, and refrigerator and freezer handles, in two metro-Atlanta grocery stores over the course of two sampling events in March 2021. Of the 260 swab samples collected, 6 (2.3%) samples were positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Positive samples were collected from pharmacy (12.0% [3/25] samples), refrigerator/freezer aisles (2.5% [1/39] samples), and self-service food court (5.0% [2/40] samples) areas. Table/counter edge and underside surfaces represented 33% (2/6) of positive samples. Chronic stress in the dairy cattle industry has negative impacts on animal health, productivity, and welfare. It has been confirmed that cortisol transfers to milk and resists the high temperature during milk processing. This study evaluated the relationship between the milk cortisol concentration (MCC) in commercial milk products and the temperature-humidity index (THI) at the time of milk production. Eleven commercially produced pasteurized and sterilized milk products, purchased in Chuncheon, Korea, with production dates ranging from July to October 2021 were analyzed. The MCC was extracted using diethyl ether and analyzed using an enzyme immunoassay. The average THI values based on microclimate data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration were 77 ± 0.8, 75 ± 1.4, 69 ± 1.4, and 58 ± 1.8, in July, August, September, and October, respectively. The average MCC levels were 211.9 ± 95.1, 173.5 ± 63.8, 109.6 ± 53.2, and 106.7 ± 33.7 pg/mL in July, August, September, and October, respectively. The MCC in July was higher than in August, September, and October ( p < 0.05), while it was lower in September and October than in August ( p < 0.05). Significant variations in the MCC were observed in commercial milk products across the four production months ( p < 0.05), except for two milk products. Overall, monitoring the cortisol residue in commercial dairy milk products can be an alternative indicator of stress in dairy cattle of farms.

This study was conducted to investigate the change in activity and mounting behavior in Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle) during the peri-estrus period and its application to estrus detection. A total of 20 Hanwoo cows were fitted with a neck-collar accelerometer device, which measured the location and acceleration of cow movements and recorded the number of instances of mounting behavior by the altitude data. The data were analyzed in three periods (24-, 6-, and 2-h periods). Blood samples were collected for 5 days after the prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) injection, and the concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Activity and mounting behavior recorded over 2-h periods significantly increased as estrus approached and were more efficient at detecting estrus than over 24- and 6-h periods ( p < 0.05). Endocrine patterns did not differ with the variation of individual cows during the peri-estrus period ( p > 0.05). Activity was selected as the best predictor through stepwise discriminant analysis. However, activity alone is not enough to detect estrus. We suggest that a combination of activity and mounting behavior may improve estrus detection efficiency in Hanwoo. Only a few iron precursors that can be used in the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of iron oxides have been examined thus far. This study aimed to compare the various properties of FeO x thin films deposited using thermal ALD and plasma-enhanced ALD (PEALD) and to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using bis( N,N '-di-butylacetamidinato)iron(II) as an Fe precursor in FeO x ALD. The PEALD of FeO x films using iron bisamidinate has not yet been reported. Compared with thermal ALD films, PEALD films exhibited improved properties in terms of surface roughness, film density, and crystallinity after they were annealed in air at 500 °C. The annealed films, which had thicknesses exceeding ~ 9 nm, exhibited hematite crystal structures. Additionally, the conformality of the ALD-grown films was examined using trench-structured wafers with different aspect ratios.

Korea is currently developing country-specific emission factors to support the 2050 zero-carbon campaign. Dairy cattle represent one of the largest livestock industries in Korea, and the industry is estimated to continue increasing because of an increase in milk demand. However, country-specific emission factors for dairy cattle are currently only available for calculating methane (CH 4 ) emissions from enteric fermentation. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate CH 4 and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes from sawdust-bedded barn in dairy cow and steer, as well as dairy cattle manure composting lots. The greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were quantified using the open-chamber method and gas chromatography. CH 4 fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 27.88 ± 5.84, 36.12 ± 10.85, and 259.44 ± 61.78 µg/head/s, respectively. N 2 O fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 14.04 ± 1.27, 4.11 ± 1.57, and 3.97 ± 1.08 µg/head/s, respectively. The result of this study can be used to construct country-specific data for GHG emissions from manure management. Background: Smart glass technology offers remote interaction between health professionals for telehealth, alleviating healthcare disparities in isolated areas., Objective: To evaluate the professionals' perceptions of smart glass technology as a tool for telehealth and distance learning., Method: This mixed-method study on health professionals in 10 different island areas in Korea involved participants experiencing a smart glass-based telehealth system using the scenario of clinical consultation with remote specialists. A group pre- and post-test design was used to examine the change in attitude and perceived importance among health professionals about using smart glasses in telehealth., Results: Forty-seven participants completed both pre-and post-evaluation of smart glasses. A positive, statistically significant change in participants' perceptions of smart glasses regarding their implications for telehealth and distance learning (p< 0.05) was found. Fifty-one health workers provided feedback on smart glasses, and a majority expressed their expectations of quality care with telehealth using advanced technology. The main concerns were patients' privacy issues and inadequate technology for seamless application., Conclusion: The incorporation of smart glass technology offers great potential to enrich telehealth as well as distance learning for unskilled health professionals in isolated areas. Future studies are needed to increase efforts to secure a high level of acceptance for clinical consultation with remote specialists on this newly developed device.

Research on producing medium- and long-chain hydrocarbons as drop-in biofuels has recently accelerated. In addition, lipids are emerging as precursors for biofuel production, and thus, microbial lipid production utilizing agrowastes is becoming a feasible platform technology. Nonetheless, microorganisms are often inhibited by furan aldehydes in biomass-derived hydrolysates. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop oleaginous yeast strains that can tolerate furan aldehydes for producing lipids as biofuel precursors. Rhodosporidium toruloides was selected as the target for adaptive laboratory evolution. The evolved strain, which was obtained from 16 rounds of subcultures, showed a 2.5-fold higher specific growth rate than the wild-type strain in the presence of furan aldehydes and slightly higher lipid production in rice straw hydrolysate. Background: Hyperactivated airway mucosa cells overproduce mucin and cause severe breathing complications. Here, we aimed to identify the effects of saponins derived from Panax ginseng on inflammation and mucin overproduction., Methods: NCI-H292 cells were pre-incubated with 16 saponins derived from P. ginseng , and mucin overproduction was induced by treatment with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). Mucin protein MUC5AC was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and mRNA levels were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Moreover, we performed a transcriptome analysis of PMA-treated NCI-H292 cells in the absence or presence of Rg5, and differential gene expression was confirmed using qPCR. Phosphorylation levels of signaling molecules, and the abundance of lipid droplets, were measured by western blotting, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy., Results: Ginsenoside Rg5 effectively reduced MUC5AC secretion and decreased MUC5AC mRNA levels. A systematic functional network analysis revealed that Rg5 upregulated cholesterol and glycerolipid metabolism, resulting in the production of lipid droplets to clear reactive oxygen species (ROS), and modulated the mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathways to regulate inflammatory responses. Rg5 induced the accumulation of lipid droplets and decreased cellular ROS levels, and N-acetyl-l-cysteine, a ROS inhibitor, reduced MUC5AC secretion via Rg5. Furthermore, Rg5 hampered the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 proteins, affecting the NF-κB signaling pathway and pro-inflammatory responses., Conclusion: Rg5 alleviated inflammatory responses by reducing mucin secretion and promoting lipid droplet-mediated ROS clearance. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a poor 5-year overall survival rate. Patients with PDAC display limited benefits after undergoing chemotherapy or immunotherapy modalities. Herein, we reveal that chemotherapy upregulates placental growth factor (PlGF), which directly activates cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) to induce fibrosis-associated collagen deposition in PDAC. Patients with poor prognosis have high PIGF/VEGF expression and an increased number of PIGF/VEGF receptor-expressing CAFs, associated with enhanced collagen deposition. We also develop a multi-paratopic VEGF decoy receptor (Ate-Grab) by fusing the single-chain Fv of atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1) to VEGF-Grab to target PD-L1-expressing CAFs. Ate-Grab exerts anti-tumor and anti-fibrotic effects in PDAC models via the PD-L1-directed PlGF/VEGF blockade. Furthermore, Ate-Grab synergizes with gemcitabine by relieving desmoplasia. Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies that a CD141 + CAF population is reduced upon Ate-Grab and gemcitabine combination treatment. While risk of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is considered low, there is limited environmental data within households. This January-April 2021 investigation describes frequency and types of surfaces positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) among residences with ≥1 SARS-CoV-2 infection, and associations of household characteristics with surface RT-PCR and viable virus positivity. Of 1232 samples from 124 households, 27.8% (n = 342) were RT-PCR positive with nightstands (44.1%) and pillows (40.9%) most frequently positive. SARS-CoV-2 lineage, documented household transmission, greater number of infected persons, shorter interval between illness onset and sampling, total household symptoms, proportion of infected persons ≤12 years old, and persons exhibiting upper respiratory symptoms or diarrhea were associated with more positive surfaces. Viable virus was isolated from 0.2% (n = 3 samples from one household) of all samples. Given that traditional biorefineries have been based on microbial fermentation to produce useful fuels, materials, and chemicals as metabolites, saccharification is an important step to obtain fermentable sugars from biomass. It is well-known that glycosidic hydrolases (GHs) are responsible for the saccharification of recalcitrant polysaccharides through hydrolysis, but the discovery of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO), which is a kind of oxidative enzyme involved in cleaving polysaccharides and boosting GH performance, has profoundly changed the understanding of enzyme-based saccharification. This review briefly introduces the classification, structural information, and catalytic mechanism of LPMOs. In addition to recombinant expression strategies, synergistic effects with GH are comprehensively discussed. Challenges and perspectives for LPMO-based saccharification on a large scale are also briefly mentioned. Ultimately, this review can provide insights for constructing an economically viable lignocellulose-based biorefinery system and a closed-carbon loop to cope with climate change., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Natural rubber (NR) presents a number of advantages over other types of rubber but has poor resistance to chemicals and aging. The incorporation of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) into the NR matrix may be able to address this issue. Mineral fillers, such as carbon black (CB) and silica are routinely incorporated into various elastomers owing to their low cost, enhanced processability, good functionality, and high resistance to chemicals and aging. Other fillers have been examined as potential alternatives to CB and silica. In this study, phlogopite was surface-modified using 10 phr of compatibilizers, such as aminopropyltriethoxysilane (A1S), aminoethylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane (A2S), or 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (ES), and mixed with NR/EPDM blends. The effects of untreated and surface-treated phlogopite on the mechanical properties of the rubber blend were then compared with those of common fillers (CB and silica) for rubbers. The incorporation of surface-modified phlogopite into NR/EPDM considerably enhanced various properties. The functionalization of the phlogopite surface using silane-based matters (amino- and epoxide-functionalized) led to excellent compatibility between the rubber matrix and phlogopite, thereby improving diverse properties of the elastomeric composites, with effects analogous to those of CB. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the phlogopite-embedded NR/EPDM composite were lower than those of the CB-incorporated NR/EPDM composite by 30% and 10%, respectively. Among the prepared samples, the ES-functionalized phlogopite showed the best compatibility with the rubber matrix, exhibiting a tensile strength and modulus of composites that were 35% and 18% higher, respectively, compared with those of the untreated phlogopite-incorporated NR/EPDM composite. The ES-functionalized phlogopite/NR/EPDM showed similar strength and higher modulus (by 18%) to the CB/NR/EPDM rubber composite, despite slightly lower elongation at break and toughness. The results of rebound resilience and compression set tests indicated that the elasticity of the surface-modified phlogopite/NR/EPDM rubber composite was higher than that of the silica- and CB-reinforced composites. These improvements could be attributed to enhancements in the physical and chemical interactions among the rubber matrix, stearic acid, and functionalized (compatibilized) phlogopite. Therefore, the functionalized phlogopite can be utilized in a wide range of applications for rubber compounding.

Meteorological disasters caused by climate change like heat, cold waves, and unusually long rainy seasons affect the milk productivity of cows. Studies have been conducted on how milk productivity and milk compositions change due to heat stress (HS). However, the estimation of losses in milk production due to HS and hereby environmental impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are yet to be evaluated in Korean dairy farms. Dairy milk production and milk compositions data from March to October 2018, provided by the Korea Dairy Committee (KDC), were used to compare regional milk production with the temperature-humidity index (THI). Raw data for the daily temperature and relative humidity in 2018 were obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). This data was used to calculate the THI and the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature changing rate, as the average daily temperature range, to show the extent to which the temperature gap can affect milk productivity. The amount of milk was calculated based on the price of 926 won/kg from KDC. The results showed that the average milk production rate was the highest within the THI range 60-73 in three regions in May: Chulwon (northern region), Hwasung (central region), and Gunwi (southern region). The average milk production decreased by 4.96 ± 1.48% in northern region, 7.12 ± 2.36% in central region, and 7.94 ± 2.57% in southern region from June to August, which had a THI range of 73 or more, when compared to May. Based on the results, the level of THI should be maintained like May. If so, the farmers can earn a profit of 9,128,730 won/farm in northern region, 9,967,880 won/farm in central region, and 12,245,300 won/farm in southern region. Additionally, the average number of cows raised can be reduced by 2.41 ± 0.35 heads/farm, thereby reducing GHG emissions by 29.61 ± 4.36 kg CO 2 eq/day on average. Overall, the conclusion suggests that maintaining environmental conditions in the summer that are similar to those in May is necessary. Aims: To determine the efficacy of a panel of nine EPA-registered disinfectants against two human norovirus (HuNoV) surrogates (feline calicivirus [FCV] and Tulane virus [TuV]) and Clostridioides difficile endospores., Methods and Results: Nine EPA-registered products, five of which contained H 2 O 2 as active ingredient, were tested against infectious FCV, TuV and C. difficile endospores using two ASTM methods, a suspension and carrier test. Efficacy claims against FCV were confirmed for 8 of 9 products. The most efficacious product containing H 2 O 2 as ingredient achieved a >5.1 log reduction of FCV and >3.1 log reduction of TuV after 5 min, and >6.0 log reduction of C. difficile endospores after 10 min. Of the five products containing H 2 O 2 , no strong correlation (R 2  = 0.25, p = 0.03) was observed between disinfection efficacy and H 2 O 2 concentration. Addition of 0.025% ferrous sulphate to 1% H 2 O 2 solution improved efficacy against FCV, TuV and C. difficile., Conclusion: Disinfectants containing H 2 O 2 are the most efficacious disinfection products against FCV, TuV and C. difficile endospores. With concerns over global warming and climate change, many efforts have been devoted to mitigate atmospheric CO 2 level. As a CO 2 utilization strategy, formate dehydrogenase (FDH) from Clostridium species were explored to discover O 2 -tolerant and efficient FDHs that can catalyze CO 2 to formate (i.e. CO 2 reductase). With FDH from Clostridium ljungdahlii (ClFDH) that plays as a CO 2 reductase previously reported as the reference, FDH from C.autoethanogenum (CaFDH), C. coskatii (CcFDH), and C. ragsdalei (CrFDH) were newly discovered via genome-mining. The FDHs were expressed in Escherichia coli and the recombinant FDHs successfully catalyzed CO 2 reduction with a specific activity of 15 U g -1 -CaFDH, 17 U g -1 -CcFDH, and 8.7 U g -1 -CrFDH. Interestingly, all FDHs newly discovered retain their catalytic activity under aerobic condition, although Clostridium species are strict anaerobe. Background: Norovirus and C. difficile are associated with diarrheal illnesses and deaths in long-term care (LTC) facilities and can be transmitted by contaminated environmental surfaces. Hygienic monitoring tools such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence and indicators of fecal contamination can help to identify LTC facility surfaces with cleaning deficiencies., Methods: High-touch surfaces in 11 LTC facilities were swabbed and tested for contamination by norovirus, a fecal indicator virus, crAssphage, and ATP which detects organic debris. High levels of contamination were defined as log ATP relative light unit values or crAssphage log genomic copy values in the 75th percentile of values obtained from each facility., Results: Over 90% of surfaces tested positive for crAssphage or gave failing ATP scores. Norovirus contamination was not detected. Handrails, equipment controls, and patient beds were 4 times more likely than other surfaces or locations to have high levels of crAssphage. Patient bed handrails and tables and chairs in patient lounges had high levels of both ATP and crAssphage., Conclusions: Surfaces with high levels of ATP and crAssphage were identified. Industrial demand for capture and utilization using microorganisms to reduce CO 2 , a major cause of global warming, is significantly increasing. Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a suitable strain for the process of converting CO 2 into high-value materials because it can accept CO 2 and has various metabolic pathways. However, it has been mainly studied for heterotrophic growth that uses sugars and organic acids as carbon sources, not autotrophic growth. Here, we report that the regulation of reactive oxygen species is critical for growth when using CO 2 as a sole carbon source in R. sphaeroides . In general, the growth rate is much slower under autotrophic conditions compared to heterotrophic conditions. To improve this, we performed random mutagenesis using N -methyl- N '-nitro- N -nitrosoguanidine (NTG). As a result, we selected the YR-1 strain with a maximum specific growth rate (μ) 1.44 day -1 in the early growth phase, which has a 110% faster growth rate compared to the wild-type. Based on the transcriptome analysis, it was confirmed that the growth was more sensitive to reactive oxygen species under autotrophic conditions. In the YR-1 mutant, the endogenous contents of H 2 O 2 levels and oxidative damage were reduced by 33.3 and 42.7% in the cells, respectively. Furthermore, we measured that concentrations of carotenoids, which are important antioxidants. The total carotenoid is produced 9.63 g/L in the YR-1 mutant, suggesting that the production is 1.7-fold higher than wild-type. Gas fermentation utilizes syngas converted from biomass or waste as feedstock. A bubble column reactor for pressurizing was designed to increase the mass transfer rate between gas and liquid, and reduce energy consumption by medium agitation. Thermococcus onnurineus, a hydrogenic CO-oxidizer, was cultured initially under ambient pressure with the initial inlet gas composition; 60% CO and 40% N 2 . The maximum H 2 productivity was 363 mmol/l/h, without pH adjustment. When additional pressure was applied, the pH rapidly declined; this may be attributed to the increased CO 2 solubility under pressure. By controlling pH, H 2 productivity increased up to 450 mmol/l/h; which is comparable to the previously reported H 2 productivity in a continuous stirred tank reactor. The results may suggest energy saving potentials of bubble column reactors in gas fermentation. Microalgae have been studied and tested for over 70 years. However, biodiesel, the prime target of the algal industry, has suffered from low competitiveness and current steps toward banning the internal combustion engine all over the world. Meanwhile, interest in reducing CO 2 emissions has grown as the world has witnessed disasters caused by global warming. In this situation, in order to maximize the benefits of the microalgal industry and surmount current limitations, new breakthroughs are being sought. First, drop-in fuel, mandatory for the aviation and maritime industries, has been discussed as a new product. Second, methods to secure stable and feasible outdoor cultivation focusing on CO 2 sequestration were investigated. Lastly, the need for an integrated refinery process to simultaneously produce multiple products has been discussed. Cross-flow membrane ultrafiltration (UF) is used for the enrichment and purification of small colloidal particles and proteins. We explore the influence of different membrane geometries on the particle transport in, and the efficiency of, inside-out cross-flow UF. For this purpose, we generalize the accurate and numerically efficient modified boundary layer approximation (mBLA) method, developed in recent work by us for a hollow cylindrical membrane, to parallel flat sheet geometries with one or two solvent-permeable membrane sheets. Considering a reference dispersion of Brownian hard spheres where accurate expressions for its transport properties are available, the generalized mBLA method is used to analyze how particle transport and global UF process indicators are affected by varying operating parameters and the membrane geometry. We show that global process indicators including the mean permeate flux, the solvent recovery indicator, and the concentration factor are strongly dependent on the membrane geometry. A key finding is that irrespective of the many input parameters characterizing an UF experiment and its membrane geometry, the process indicators are determined by three independent dimensionless variables only. This finding can be very useful in the design, optimization, and scale-up of UF processes.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of sling-based thoracic active exercise on pain, function, and quality of life in female patients with neck pain. A total of 27 female patients with neck pain were divided into the sling-based thoracic active exercise group ( n = 14) and the control group ( n = 13). The study group performed a sling-based thoracic active exercise with cervical manual therapy for 50 min a day, twice a week for 4 weeks, whereas the control group performed a placebo exercise with cervical manual therapy in the same manner as the study group. Evaluation of the degree of pain before and after treatment was based on the pressure pain threshold and numeric pain rating scale scores. The craniovertebral angle and neck disability index (NDI) were used to evaluate neck function, and quality of life was measured using the Short Form-36. Afterwards, the patients' pressure pain thresholds were significantly increased, and the numeric pain rating scale score was significantly decreased in both groups ( p < 0.05). In terms of function, the craniovertebral angle was significantly increased in both groups ( p < 0.05), and neck dysfunction significantly decreased ( p < 0.05). The quality of life significantly increased in both groups ( p < 0.05). The pressure pain threshold, craniovertebral angle, neck dysfunction index, and quality of life scores ( p < 0.05) were significantly different between groups, except the numeric pain scale score. Our results showed that sling-based thoracic active exercise is effective in reducing pain and improving function and quality of life in female patients with neck pain, thus emphasizing the need for thoracic treatment for such patients.

Glycoproteomics is a powerful yet analytically challenging research tool. Software packages aiding the interpretation of complex glycopeptide tandem mass spectra have appeared, but their relative performance remains untested. Conducted through the HUPO Human Glycoproteomics Initiative, this community study, comprising both developers and users of glycoproteomics software, evaluates solutions for system-wide glycopeptide analysis. The same mass spectrometrybased glycoproteomics datasets from human serum were shared with participants and the relative team performance for N- and O-glycopeptide data analysis was comprehensively established by orthogonal performance tests. Although the results were variable, several high-performance glycoproteomics informatics strategies were identified. Deep analysis of the data revealed key performance-associated search parameters and led to recommendations for improved 'high-coverage' and 'high-accuracy' glycoproteomics search solutions. This study concludes that diverse software packages for comprehensive glycopeptide data analysis exist, points to several high-performance search strategies and specifies key variables that will guide future software developments and assist informatics decision-making in glycoproteomics., (© 2021. Given that (i) levulinic acid (LA) is one of the most significant platform chemicals derived from biomass and (ii) 4-hydroxyvaleric acid (4-HV) is a potential LA derivative, the aim of this study is to achieve chemoenzymatic valorization of LA, which was obtained from agricultural wastes, to 4-HV. The thermochemical process utilized agricultural wastes (i.e., rice straw and corncob) as feedstocks and successfully produced LA, ranging from 25.1 to 65.4 mM. Additionally, formate was co-produced and used as a hydrogen source for the enzymatic hydrogenation of LA. Finally, engineered 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Alcaligenes faecalis (eHBDH) was applicable for catalyzing the conversion of agricultural wastes-driven LA, resulting in a maximum concentration of 11.32 mM 4-HV with a conversion rate of 48.2%. SARS-CoV-2 transmission from contaminated surfaces, or fomites, has been a concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Households have been important sites of transmission throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is limited information on SARS-CoV-2 contamination of surfaces in these settings. We describe environmental detection of SARS-CoV-2 in households of persons with COVID-19 to better characterize the potential risks of fomite transmission. Ten households with ≥1 person with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and with ≥2 members total were enrolled in Utah, U.S.A. Nasopharyngeal and anterior nasal swabs were collected from members and tested for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. Fifteen surfaces were sampled in each household and tested for presence and viability of SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 23 (15%) of 150 environmental swab samples, most frequently on nightstands (4/6; 67%), pillows (4/23; 17%), and light switches (3/21; 14%). Viable SARS-CoV-2 was cultured from one sample. All households with SARS-CoV-2-positive surfaces had ≥1 person who first tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 ≤ 6 days prior to environmental sampling. SARS-CoV-2 surface contamination occurred early in the course of infection when respiratory transmission is most likely, notably on surfaces in close, prolonged contact with persons with COVID-19. While fomite transmission might be possible, risk is low.

Amongst the theoretical approaches towards the dynamics and phase behaviour of suspensions of active Brownian particles (ABPs), no attempt has been made to specify the motility-induced inter-particle correlations as quantified by the pair-correlation function. Here, we derive expressions for the pair-correlation function for ABPs with very short-ranged direct interactions for small and large swimming velocities and low concentrations. The pair-correlation function is the solution of a differential equation that is obtained from the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density function of the positions and orientations of the ABPs. For large swimming Peclet numbers, λ, the pair-correlation function is highly asymmetric. The pair-correlation function attains a large value, ∼λ, within a small region of spatial extent, ∼1/λ, near contact of the ABPs when the ABPs approach each other. The pair-correlation function is small within a large region of spatial extent, ∼λ1/3, when the ABPs move apart, with a contact value that is essentially zero. From the explicit expressions for the pair-correlation function, Fick's diffusion equation is generalized to include motility. It is shown that mass transport, in case of large swimming velocities, is dominated by a preferred swimming direction that is induced by concentration gradients. The expression for the pair-correlation function derived in this paper could serve as a starting point to obtain approximate results for high concentrations, which could then be employed in a first-principles analysis of the dynamics and phase behaviour of ABPs at higher concentrations.

Background: The emergence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MRMP) has made its treatment challenging. A few guidelines have recommended fluoroquinolones (FQs) as second-line drugs of choice for treating MRMP in children under the age of eight, but concerns about potential adverse events (i.e., Achilles tendinopathy; AT) have been raised. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the use of FQs and the risk of AT in pneumonia in children under eight years of age., Methods: Children hospitalized with pneumonia (total of 2,213,807 episodes) from 2002 to 2017 were enrolled utilizing the Korean National Health Insurance Sharing Service (NHISS) database. The independent risk of FQs for AT was analyzed by a generalized estimating equation with adjustment for age, sex, and underlying diseases., Results: Among 2,213,807 episodes of pneumonia hospitalization, children in a total of 6,229 episodes (0.28%) were treated with FQs (levofloxacin 40.9%, ciprofloxacin 36.1%, moxifloxacin 11.6%, and others 11.4%). The FQ-exposure group showed a 0.19% (12/6,229) incidence of AT within 30 days after the first administration of FQ. The use of FQs increased the risk of AT (OR 3.00; 95% CI: 1.71-5.29), but became null after adjusting for age, sex, and underlying diseases (aOR 0.85; 95% CI: 0.48-1.51). All AT related to the use of FQs occurred after the use of ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin, and not in children under eight years of age., Conclusions: AT was a rare adverse event of FQ use for childhood pneumonia, particularly under eight years of age. The electrochemical conversion of CO 2 can include renewable surplus electricity storage and CO 2 utilisation. This review focuses on the microbial CO 2 electrobiorefinery based on microbial electrosynthesis (MES) which merges electrochemical and microbial conversion to produce biofuels and higher-value chemicals. In this review, recent developments are discussed about bioelectrochemical conversion of CO 2 into biofuels and chemicals in MES via microbial CO 2 -fixation and electricity utilisation reactions. In addition, this review examines technical approaches to overcome the current limitations of MES including the following: engineering of the biocathode, application of electron mediators, and reactor optimisation, among others. An in-depth discussion of strategies for the CO 2 electrobiorefinery is presented, including the integration of the biocathode with inorganic catalysts, screening of novel electroactive microorganisms, and metabolic engineering to improve target productivity from CO 2 ., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Rationale: Glycoprotein fucosylation, one of the major posttranslational modifications, is known to be highly involved in proteins related to various cancers. Fucosylation occurs in the core and/or outer sites of N-glycopeptides. Elucidation of the fucosylation type of N-glycoproteins is therefore important. However, it has remained a challenge to classify the fucosylation types of N-glycopeptides using collision-induced dissociation (CID) tandem mass (MS/MS) spectra., Methods: The relative intensities of the Y 1 F, Y 2 F, Y 3 F, and Y 4 F product ions in the CID-MS/MS spectra of the IgG N-glycopeptides were measured for core fucosylation. The Core Fucose Index (CFI) was then calculated by multiplication of the relative intensities with a weight factor from logistic regression to differentiate between the core and none fucosylation. From the relative intensities of the B 2 F and B 3 SF ions of the MS/MS spectra of the AGP N-glycopeptides for outer fucosylation, the Outer Fucose Index (OFI) was calculated to differentiate between the outer and none fucosylation., Results: In order to classify core and/or outer fucosylation of N-glycoproteins, we defined the fucosylation score (F-score) by a sigmoidal equation using a combination of the CFI and the OFI. For application, we classified the fucosylation types of N-glycoproteins in human plasma with 99.7% accuracy from the F-score. Human plasma samples showed 54.4%, 33.3%, 10.3%, and 1.6% for none, core, outer, and dual fucosylated N-glycopeptides, respectively. Core fucosylation was abundant at mono- and bi-antennary N-glycopeptides. Outer fucosylation was abundant at tri- and tetra-antennary N-glycopeptides. In total, 113 N-glycopeptides of 29 glycoproteins from 3365 glycopeptide spectral matches (GPSMs) were classified for different types of fucosylation., Conclusions: We established an F-score to classify three different fucosylation types: core, outer, and dual types of N-glycopeptides. The fucosylation types of 20 new N-glycopeptides from 11 glycoproteins in human plasma were classified using the F-score. Cross-flow ultrafiltration is a pressure-driven separation and enrichment process of small colloidal particles where a colloidal feed dispersion is continuously pumped through a membrane pipe permeable to the solvent only. We present a semi-analytic modified boundary layer approximation (mBLA) method for calculating the inhomogeneous concentration-polarization (CP) layer of particles near the membrane and the dispersion flow in a cross-flow filtration setup with a hollow fiber membrane. Conditions are established for which unwarranted axial flow and permeate flow reversal are excluded, and non-monotonic CP profiles are observed. The permeate flux is linked to the particle concentration on the membrane wall using the Darcy-Starling expression invoking axially varying osmotic and trans-membrane pressures. Results are discussed for dispersions of hard spheres serving as a reference system and for solvent-permeable particles mimicking non-ionic microgels. Accurate analytic expressions are employed for the concentration and solvent permeability dependent dispersion viscosity and gradient diffusion coefficient entering into the effective Stokes flow and advection-diffusion equations. We show that the mBLA concentration and flow profiles are in quantitative agreement with results by a finite element method. The mBLA results are compared with predictions by an earlier CP layer similarity solution, showing the higher precision of the former method.

The α-galactosyl epitope is a terminal N -glycan moiety of glycoproteins found in mammals except in humans, and thus, it is recognized as an antigen that provokes an immunogenic response in humans. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the α-galactosyl structure in biopharmaceuticals or organ transplants. Due to an identical glycan composition and molecular mass between α-galactosyl N -glycans and hybrid/high-mannose-type N -glycans, it is challenging to characterize α-galactosyl epitopes in N -glycoproteins using mass spectrometry. Here, we describe a method to identify α-galactosyl N -glycopeptides in mice glycoproteins using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry with higher-energy collisional dissociation (HCD). The first measure was an absence of [Y HM ] ion peaks in the HCD spectra, which was exclusively observed in hybrid and/or high-mannose-type N -glycopeptides. The second complementary criterion was the ratio of an m / z 528.19 (Hex 2 HexNAc 1 ) ion to m / z 366.14 (Hex 1 HexNAc 1 ) ion ( I m / z 528 / I m / z 366 ). The measure of [ I m / z 528 / I m / z 366 > 0.3] enabled a clear-cut determination of α-galactosyl N -glycopeptides with high accuracy. In Ggta1 knockout mice, we could not find any α-galactosyl N -glycoproteins identified in WT mice plasma. Using this method, we could screen for α-galactosyl N -glycoproteins from mice spleen, lungs, and plasma samples in a highly sensitive and specific manner. Conclusively, we suggest that this method will provide a robust analytical tool for determination of α-galactosyl epitopes in pharmaceuticals and complex biological samples.

This study investigated the mechanical properties of steel in flanges, with the goal of obtaining high strength and high toughness. Quenching was applied alone or in combination with tempering at one of nine combinations of three temperatures T TEM and durations t TEM . Cooling rates at various flange locations during quenching were first estimated using finite element method simulation, and the three locations were selected for mechanical testing in terms of cooling rate. Microstructures of specimens were observed at each condition. Tensile test and hardness test were performed at room temperature, and a Charpy impact test was performed at -46 °C. All specimens had a multiphase microstructure composed of matrix and secondary phases, which decomposed under the various tempering conditions. Decrease in cooling rate (CR) during quenching caused reduction in hardness and strength but did not affect low-temperature toughness significantly. After tempering, hardness and strength were reduced and low-temperature toughness was increased. Microstructures and mechanical properties under the various tempering conditions and CRs during quenching were discussed. This work was based on the properties directly obtained from flanges under industrial processes and is thus expected to be useful for practical applications.

The Bioinformatics & Molecular Design Research Center Mass Spectral Library - Natural Products (BMDMS-NP) is a library containing the mass spectra of natural compounds, especially plant specialized metabolites. At present, the library contains the electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) spectra of 2739 plant metabolites that are commercially available. The contents of the library were made comprehensive by incorporating data generated under various experimental conditions for compounds with diverse molecular structures. The structural diversity of the BMDMS-NP data was evaluated using molecular fingerprints, and it was sufficiently exhaustive enough to represent the structures of the natural products commercially available. The MS/MS spectra of each metabolite were obtained with different types/brands of ion traps (tandem-in-time) or combinations of mass analyzers (tandem-in-space) at multiple collision energies. All spectra were measured repeatedly in each environment because variations can occur in spectra, even under the same conditions. Moreover, the probability, separability of searching, and transferability of this spectral library were evaluated against those of MS/MS libraries, namely: NIST17 and MoNA., (Copyright © 2020. CrAssphage is a recently discovered human gut-associated bacteriophage. To validate the potential use of crAssphage for detecting human fecal contamination on environmental surfaces and hands, we tested stool samples (n = 60), hand samples (n = 30), and environmental swab samples (n = 201) from 17 norovirus outbreaks for crAssphage by real-time PCR. In addition, we tested stool samples from healthy persons (n = 173), respiratory samples (n = 113), and animal fecal specimens (n = 68) and further sequenced positive samples. Overall, we detected crAssphage in 71.4% of outbreak stool samples, 48%-68.5% of stool samples from healthy persons, 56.2% of environmental swabs, and 60% of hand rinse samples, but not in human respiratory samples or animal fecal samples. CrAssphage sequences could be grouped into 2 major genetic clusters. Our data suggest that crAssphage could be used to detect human fecal contamination on environmental surfaces and hands.

Corneal chemical burns can lead to blindness following serious complications. As most of these complications are caused by failure of reepithelization during the acute phase, treatment at this stage is critical. Although there have been some studies on corneal injury recovery using adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs), none has reported the effect of topical cell-free conditioned culture media (CM) derived from ADSCs on corneal epithelial regeneration. Here, the best conditions for CM were selected and used for in vitro and in vivo experiments. Corneal burn in rats was induced using 100% alcohol. The chosen CM was administered to corneal burn rats (CM-treated [CT] group) four times a day for three days and this group was compared with the normal control and corneal burn (CB) groups. Biomicroscopic fluorescence images and the actual physical corneas were taken over time and used for analysis. mRNA levels of hepatocyte growth factor and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were significantly increased, whereas those of vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 were significantly decreased in the CT group compared with those in the CB group. The numbers of proliferating cell nuclear antigen- and zonular occludens-1-positive cells in the CT group were significantly higher than those in the CB group. The macrophage-infiltrating corneas in the CT group expressed significantly more of the M2 marker arginase than corneas in the CB group. Optimal CM (× 0.5 concentration) treatment significantly accelerated the migration of corneal epithelial cells and induced upregulation of the expression of IL-6, EGF, and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 mRNAs. Overall, in this study, topical administration of cell-free CM promoted regeneration of the corneal epithelium after induction of chemical burns.

Changes in mucin-type O -glycosylation of human proteins affect protein function, immune response, and cancer progression. Since O -glycoproteins are characterized by the microheterogeneity of diverse O -glycans with no conserved sequence and the macroheterogeneity of multiple glycosylation sites on serine and/or threonine in human proteins, the assessment of different mucin types, such as Tn-antigen, core 1, and core 2, and their extended core types in O -glycopeptides, is extremely challenging. Here, we present an O-GlycoProteome Analyzer ( O -GPA) that automatically classifies mucin-type O -glycosylation using higher-energy collisional dissociation (HCD) in mass spectrometry. First, we estimated the number of GlcNAc residues using the intensity ratio of GlcNAc-specific fragment ions (HexNAc-CH 6 O 3 and HexNAc-2H 2 O) over GalNAc-specific fragment ions (HexNAc-C 2 H 6 O 3 and HexNAc-C 2 H 4 O 2 ) in the HCD spectrum. Furthermore, we classified the different mucin types of O -glycopeptides from characteristic B 2 (HexNAc 2 ) or Y 2α (PEP + HexNAc 2 ), and Y 2β (PEP + HexNAcHex) fragment ions, along with the number of GlcNAc. Furthermore, O -GPA automatically determined single or multiple O -glycosylation, regardless of the mucin types. The mucin type of O -glycopeptides from human urine and plasma was confirmed with an overall accuracy of 96%. We found 97 core 1, 56 core 2, 13 extended core 1, and 12 extended core 2 glycopeptides from urine; and 22 core 1, 13 core 2, 7 extended core 1, 1 extended core 2, and 1 Tn-antigen from plasma. Our strategy can be used to successfully characterize specific mucin types of O -glycoproteins in human biological samples.

Due to climate change, recent research interests have increased towards CO 2 utilization as a strategy to mitigate the atmospheric CO 2 level. Herein, we aimed to explore formate dehydrogenases (FDHs) from chemoautotroph to discover an efficient and O 2 -tolerant biocatalyst for catalyzing the CO 2 reduction to a versatile formate. Through genome-mining and phylogenetic analysis, the FDH from Rhodobacter aestuarii (RaFDH) was newly discovered as a promising O 2 -tolernat CO 2 reductase and was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli. In this study, the optimum conditions and turnover rates of RaFDH were examined for CO 2 reduction and formate oxidation. In particular, the RaFDH-driven CO 2 reduction far surpassed the formate oxidation with a turnover rate of 48.3 and 15.6 min -1 , respectively. The outstanding superiority of RaFDH towards CO 2 reduction can be applicable for constructing a feasible electroenzymatic system that produce a versatile formate from CO 2 as a cheap, abundant, and renewable resource., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. While the hydrogen economy is receiving growing attention, research on microbial hydrogen production is also increasing. Microbial water-gas shift reaction is advantageous as it produces hydrogen from by product gas including carbon monoxide (CO). However, CO solubility in water is the bottleneck of this process by low mass transfer. Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 strain can endure a high-pressure environment and can enhance hydrogen production in a pressurized reactor by increasing CO solubility. As CO causes cell toxicity, two important factors, pressure and input gas flow rate, should be considered for process control during cultivation. Hence, we employed different operational strategies for enhancing hydrogen production and obtained 577 mmol/L/h of hydrogen productivity. This is the highest hydrogen productivity reported to date from microbial water-gas shift reaction.

Objective: Although endoscopic procedures for lumbar disc herniation have improved greatly and offer many advantages, the indications are limited mostly to nonmigrated or low-grade migrated disc herniation. Endoscopic application in migrated disc herniation cases is still challenging and technically demanding. The goal in this study was to determine the feasibility of biportal endoscopic discectomy for removal of high-grade migrated disc herniation., Methods: A retrospective review was performed in 262 patients who had undergone biportal endoscopic discectomy after the diagnosis of lumbar herniated disc. According to preoperative MRI findings, disc herniation was classified into 5 zones based on the direction and distance from the disc space. Patients were divided into 2 groups-a high-grade migration group and a low-grade migration group. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), visual analog scale (VAS), and modified Macnab criteria, and those outcomes and operation time were compared between the 2 groups., Results: There were 10 patients with "high-grade up," 8 with "low-grade up," 98 with disc-level, 102 with "low-grade down," and 44 with "high-grade down" herniation, thereby yielding 54 patients in the high-grade group and 208 in the low-grade group. Demographic data for the 2 groups showed no significant difference. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in ODI, VAS, and modified Macnab criteria. Operation time between the 2 groups was not significantly different (60.74 vs 65.63 minutes, p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Biportal endoscopic discectomy can be effective for high-grade migrated lumbar disc herniation with no prolonged operation time and satisfactory clinical outcomes.
