Motivated by ongoing work on pump-probe experiments and Floquet driven magnets, we theoretically study the impact of pumped and driven Einstein phonons with weak dissipation in multipolar Mott insulators. For Mott insulators with pseudospin-$1/2$ non-Kramers doublets hosting octupolar and quadrupolar moments, we show that pumping the ${\cal E}_g$ phonon modes which couple linearly to the quadrupoles leads to characteristic chiral phonon dynamics below the octupolar ordering transition. We also explore steady states in the presence of continuously driven phonons, showing that a coherent two-phonon drive with a suitable phase choice can be used to 'train' octupolar order or even switch its sign. For spin-$1$ magnets, which host dipolar and quadrupolar moments, we show that one-phonon and two-phonon drives can generate Floquet flavor-wave excitations and induce dipolar magnetization. Our results are obtained using a generalized $SU(N)$ Monte Carlo for the multipolar degrees of freedom with numerical integration of the coupled spin-phonon equations of motion. Motivated by exploring doped multi-orbital antiferromagnets (AFMs) and altermagnets (ALMs) we explore minimal $t$-$J$ models on the square-octagon lattice which favor such collinear magnetic orders in the regime where spin exchange dominates. While the AFM order breaks translational and time-reversal symmetries, the ALM state (equivalently, a `$d$-wave ferromagnet') features multipolar order which separately breaks time-reversal and crystal rotation symmetries but preserves their product leading to spin-split bands with zero net magnetization. We study the mean field phase diagram of these models as we vary doping and interactions, discovering regimes of weak and strong ALM order, superconductivity including uniform $s$-wave and $d$-wave pairing states, incipient $d$-wave pair density wave order, and phases with coexisting singlet-triplet pairing and AFM/ALM orders which appear unstable to phase separation and could host stripe order with longer-range interactions. Vacancy-ordered halide double perovskites hosting 4d/5d transition metals have emerged as a distinct platform for investigating unconventional magnetism arising out of the interplay of strong atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb interactions. Focusing on the $d^2$ system Cs$_2$WCl$_6$, our ab initio electronic structure calculation reveals very narrow electronic bands, fulfilling the necessary condition to realize exotic orders. Using this input, we solve the many-body spin-orbit coupled single-site problem by exact diagonalization and show that the multiplet structure of Cs$_2$WCl$_6$ hosts ground non-Kramers doublets on W, with vanishing dipole moment and a small gap to an excited magnetic triplet. Our work provides the rationale for the observed strong deviation from the classic Kotani behaviour in Cs$_2$WCl$_6$ for the measured temperature dependence of the magnetic moment. The non-Kramers doublets on W exhibit non-zero quadrupolar and octupolar moments, and our calculated two-site exchange supports the dominance of inter-site octupolar exchange over quadrupolar interactions. We predict ferro-octupolar order with a transition temperature $T_c \sim 5$K which may get somewhat suppressed by quantum fluctuations and disorder; this could be tested in future low-temperature experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figs, submitted to PRB

Motivated by systems where a high temperature non-Fermi liquid gives way to low temperature $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Potts nematic order, we studied a three-orbital Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the large-$N$ limit. In the single-site limit, this model exhibits a spontaneous orbital-selective transition which preserves average particle-hole symmetry, with two orbitals becoming insulators while the third orbital remains a non-Fermi liquid down to zero temperature. We extend this study to lattice models of three-orbital SYK dots, exploring uniform symmetry broken states on the triangular and cubic lattices. At high temperature, these lattice models exhibit an isotropic non-Fermi liquid metal phase. On the three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, the low temperature uniform $\mathbb{Z}_3$ nematic state corresponds to an orbital selective layered state which preserves particle-hole symmetry at small hopping and spontaneously breaks the particle-hole symmetry at large hopping. Over a wide range of temperature, the transport in this layered state shows metallic in-plane resistivity but insulating out-of-plane resistivity. On the 2D triangular lattice, the low temperature state with uniform orbital order is also a correlated $\mathbb{Z}_3$ nematic with orbital-selective transport but it remains metallic in both principal directions. We discuss a Landau theory with $\mathbb{Z}_3$ clock terms which captures salient features of the phase diagram and nematic order in all these models. We study a class of multi-orbital models based on those proposed by Venderbos, Hu, and Kane which exhibit an interplay of topology, interactions, and fermion incoherence. In the non-interacting limit, these models exhibit trivial and Chern insulator phases with Chern number $C \geq 1$ bands as determined by the relative angular momentum of the participating orbitals. These quantum anomalous Hall insulator phases are separated by topological transitions protected by crystalline rotation symmetry, featuring Dirac or quadratic band-touching points. Here we study the impact of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) type interactions on these lattice models. Given the random interactions, these models display `average symmetries' upon disorder averaging, including a charge conjugation symmetry, so they behave as interacting models in topological class $\mathbf{D}$ enriched by crystalline rotation symmetry. The phase diagram of this model features a non-Fermi liquid at high temperature and an `exciton condensate' with nematic transport at low temperature. We present results from the free-energy, spectral functions, and the anomalous Hall resistivity as a function of temperature and tuning parameters. The quest for exotic quantum magnetic ground states, including the Kitaev spin liquid and quantum spin-ices, has led to the discovery of several quantum materials where low energy pseudospin-$1/2$ doublets arise from the splitting of spin-orbit entangled multiplets with higher degeneracy. Such systems include $d$-orbital and $f$-orbital Mott insulators. When the gap between the low energy pseudospin-$1/2$ levels and the excited levels of the multiplet or `excitons' is not large, the effective low-energy exchange interactions between the low energy pseudospin-$1/2$ moments can acquire significant corrections from coupling to the excitons. We extract these corrections using higher order perturbation theory as well as an exact Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. Such corrections can impact the exchange matrix for the low energy pseudospin-$1/2$ levels by renormalizing the strength and the sign of Heisenberg exchange or Ising anisotropies, and potentially even inducing bond-anisotropic couplings such as Kitaev-$\Gamma$ exchange interactions. In the ferromagnetic (FM) Weyl semimetal CeAlSi both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. Our quantum oscillation (QO) data indicate that the FM ordering modifies the Fermi surface topology and also leads to an unusual drop in the QO amplitude. In the FM phase, we find a pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous and the loop Hall effects. This cannot be explained based on the electronic band structure or magnetic structure, both of which are nearly pressure independent. Instead, we show that a simplified model describing the scattering of Weyl fermions off FM domain walls can potentially explain the observed topological features. Recent theoretical and experimental work suggest that the honeycomb cobaltates, initially proposed as candidate Kitaev quantum magnets, are in fact described by a pseudospin-$1/2$ easy-plane spin Hamiltonian with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic (FM) exchange $J_1$ being frustrated by antiferromagnetic third-neighbor exchange $J_3$ and weaker compass anisotropies. Using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we show that this model exhibits FM order at small $J_3/J_1$ and zig-zag (ZZ) order at large $J_3/J_1$, separated by an intermediate phase, which we label as $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$. This $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$ phase is shown to exhibit spin-liquid-like correlations in DMRG, although we cannot preclude weak broken symmetries, e.g. weak Ising type N\'eel order, given the limits on our explored system sizes. Using a modified parton mean field theory and variational Monte Carlo on Gutzwiller projected wavefunctions, we show that the optimal FM and ZZ orders as well as the intermediate $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$ state are proximate to a `parent' Dirac spin liquid (SL). This Dirac SL is shown to capture the broad continuum in the temperature and magnetic field dependent terahertz spectroscopy of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, and the reported low temperature metallic thermal conductivity in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ upon incorporating disorder induced broadening., Comment: Final PRB version - 13 pages, 11 figures. Quantum materials with non-Kramers doublets are a fascinating venue to realize multipolar hidden orders. Impurity probes which break point group symmetries, such as implanted muons or substitutional impurities, split the non-Kramers degeneracy and exhibit a Janus-faced influence in such systems: they can destroy the very order they seek to probe. Here, we explore this duality in cubic osmate double perovskites which are candidates for exotic $d$-orbital octupolar order competing with quadrupolar states. Using {\it ab initio} computations, Landau theory, and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that Janus impurities induce local strain fields, nucleating quadrupolar puddles and suppressing the octupolar $T_c$. At the same time, strains mix the non-Kramers doublet with an excited magnetic triplet, creating parasitic dipole moments which directly expose the hidden octupolar order parameter. The breaking of chiral and time-reversal symmetries provides a pathway to exotic quantum phenomena and topological phases. In particular, the breaking of chiral (mirror) symmetry in quantum materials has been shown to have important technological applications. Recent work has extensively explored the resulting emergence of chiral charge orders and chiral spin liquids on the kagom\'e lattice. Such chiral spin liquids are closely tied to bosonic fractional quantum Hall states and host anyonic quasiparticles; however, their connection to nearby magnetically ordered states has remained a mystery. Here, we show that two distinct non-coplanar magnetic orders with uniform spin chirality, the XYZ umbrella state and the Octahedral spin crystal, emerge as competing orders in close proximity to the kagom\'e chiral spin liquid. We propose and study a two-orbital lattice extension of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in the large-$N$ limit. The phase diagram of this model features a high temperature isotropic strange metal which undergoes a first-order thermal transition into a nematic insulator or a continuous thermal transition into nematic metal phase, separated by a tunable tricritical point. These phases arise from spontaneous partial orbital polarization of the multiorbital non-Fermi liquid. We explore the spectral and transport properties of this model, including the d.c. elastoresistivity, which exhibits a peak near the nematic transition, as well as the nonzero frequency elastoconductivity. We derive the microscopic spin Hamiltonian for rhombohedral CrI$_3$ using extensive first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations which incorporate spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard U. Our calculations indicate a dominant nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange with weaker further-neighbor Heisenberg terms. In addition, we find a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which primarily drives a topological gap in the spin-wave spectrum at the Dirac point, and uncover a non-negligible antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling between the S=3/2 Cr moments. The out-of-plane magnetic moment is stabilized by weak symmetric bond-dependent terms and a local single-ion anisotropy. Using linear spin wave theory, we find that our exchange parameters are in reasonably good agreement with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Employing classical Monte Carlo simulations, we study the magnetic phase transition temperature $T_c$ and its evolution with an applied in-plane magnetic field. We further demonstrate how future high-resolution INS experiments on the magnon dispersion of single crystals in an in-plane magnetic field may be used to quantitatively extract the strength of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange coupling., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Krein-Hermitian Hamiltonians, i.e., Hamiltonians Hermitian with respect to an indefinite inner product, have emerged as an important class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in physics, encompassing both single-particle bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonians and so-called "$PT$-symmetric" non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. In particular, they have attracted considerable scrutiny owing to the recent surge in interest for boson topology. Motivated by these developments, we formulate a perturbative Krein-unitary Schrieffer-Wolff transformation for finite-size dynamically stable Krein-Hermitian Hamiltonians, yielding an effective Hamiltonian for a subspace of interest. The effective Hamiltonian is Krein Hermitian and, for sufficiently small perturbations, also dynamically stable. As an application, we use this transformation to justify codimension-based analyses of band touchings in bosonic BdG Hamiltonians, which complement topological characterization. We use this simple approach based on symmetry and codimension to revisit known topological magnon band touchings in several materials of recent interest., Comment: Updated to published version. Recent experiments have discovered multipolar orders in a variety of $d$-orbital Mott insulators. Motivated by uncovering the exchange interactions which underlie octupolar order proposed in the osmate double perovskites, we study a two-site model using exact diagonalization on a five-orbital Hamiltonian, incorporating spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and interactions, and including both intra-orbital and inter-orbital hopping. Using an exact Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we then extract an effective pseudospin Hamiltonian for the non-Kramers doublets, uncovering dominant ferrooctupolar coupling driven by the interplay of two distinct intra-orbital hopping terms. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations on the face-centered cubic lattice, we obtain a ferrooctupolar transition temperature which is in good agreement with experiments on the osmate double perovskites. We also explore the impact of uniaxial strain and dimensional tuning via ultrathin films, which are shown to induce a transverse field on the Ising octupolar order. This suppresses $T_c$ and potentially allows one to access octupolar Ising quantum critical points. The quest for Kitaev quantum spin liquids has led to great interest in honeycomb quantum magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. It has been recently proposed that even Mott insulators with $3d$ transition metal ions, having nominally weak spin-orbit coupling, can realize such exotic physics. Motivated by this, we study the rhombohedral honeycomb cobaltates CoTiO$_3$, BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$, and BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, using $\textit{ab initio}$ density functional theory, which takes into account realistic crystal field distortions and chemical information, in conjunction with exact diagonalization numerics. We show that these Co$^{2+}$ magnets host $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ local moments with highly anisotropic $g$-factors, and we extract their full spin Hamiltonians including longer-range and anisotropic exchange couplings. For CoTiO$_3$, we find a nearest-neighbor easy-plane ferromagnetic $XXZ$ model with additional bond-dependent anisotropies and interlayer exchange, which supports three-dimensional (3D) Dirac nodal line magnons. In contrast, for BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, we find a strongly suppressed interlayer coupling, and significant frustration from additional third-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange mediated by P/As. Such bond-anisotropic $J_1$-$J_3$ spin models can support collinear zig-zag or coplanar spiral ground states; we discuss their dynamical spin correlations which reveal a gapped Goldstone mode, and argue that the effective parameters of these pseudospin-$1/2$ models may be strongly renormalized by coupling to a low energy spin-exciton. We study the high frequency Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional (2D) model of conduction electrons coupled to a background magnetic skyrmion texture via an effective Hund's coupling term. For an ordered skyrmion crystal, a Kubo formula calculation using the basis of skyrmion crystal Chern bands reveals a resonant Hall response at a frequency set by the Hund's coupling: $\hbar\omega_{\text{res}} \approx J_H$. A complementary real-space Kubo formula calculation for an isolated skyrmion in a box reveals a similar resonant Hall response. A linear relation between the area under the Hall resonant curve and the skyrmion density is discovered numerically and is further elucidated using a gradient expansion which is valid for smooth textures and a local approximation based on a spin-trimer calculation. We point out the issue of distinguishing this skyrmion contribution from a similar feature arising from spin-orbit interactions, as demonstrated in a model for Rashba spin-orbit coupled electrons in a collinear ferromagnet, which is analogous to the difficulty of unambiguously separating the d.c. topological Hall effect from the anomalous Hall effect. The concept of free fermion topology has been generalized to $d$-dimensional phases that exhibit $(d-n)$-dimensional boundary modes, such as zero-dimensional (0D) corner excitations. Motivated by recent extensions of these ideas to magnetic systems, we consider 2D quantum paramagnets formed by interacting spin dimers with dispersive triplet excitations. We propose two examples of such dimer models, where the spin-gapped bosonic triplon excitations are shown to host bands with nontrivial higher-order topology. We demonstrate this using real-space Bogoliubov--de Gennes calculations that reveal the existence of mid-bandgap corner triplon modes as a signature of higher-order bulk topology. We provide an understanding of the higher-order topology in these systems via a computation of bulk topological invariants as well as the construction of edge theories, and study their phase transitions as we tune parameters in the model Hamiltonians. We consider a magnetic skyrmion crystal formed at the surface of a topological insulator. Incorporating the exchange interaction between the helical Dirac surface states and the periodic N\'eel or Bloch skyrmion texture, we obtain the resulting electronic band structure and discuss the constraints that symmetries impose on the energies and Berry curvature. We find substantive qualitative differences between the N\'eel and Bloch cases, with the latter generically permitting a multiband low energy tight-binding representation whose parameters are tightly constrained by symmetries. We explicitly compute the associated Wannier orbitals, which resemble the ringlike chiral bound states of helical Dirac fermions coupled to a single skyrmion in a ferromagnetic background. We construct a two-band tight-binding model with real nearest-neighbor hoppings which captures the salient topological features of the low-energy bands. Our results are relevant to magnetic topological insulators (TIs), as well as to TI-magnetic thin film heterostructures, in which skyrmion crystals may be stabilized., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

The interplay of nematicity and superconductivity has been observed in a wide variety of quantum materials. To explore this interplay, we consider a two-dimensional (2D) array of nematogens, local droplets with $Z_3$ nematicity, coupled to a network of Josephson junction wires. Using finite temperature classical Monte Carlo simulations, we elucidate the phase diagram of this model and show that the development of superconducting correlations and the directional delocalization of Cooper pairs can promote nematogen ordering, resulting in long-range nematic order. We obtain the transport properties of our model within an effective resistor network picture. We discuss these ideas in the context of the 2D electron gas at the (111) KTaO$_3$ interface and the doped topological insulators Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We study transport in the presence of magnetic domain walls (DWs) in a lattice model of ferromagnetic type-I Weyl metals. We compute the diagonal and Hall conductivities in the presence of a DW, using both Kubo and Landauer formalisms, and uncover the effect of DW scattering. When the Fermi level lies near Weyl points, we find a strong skew scattering at the DW which leads to a significant additional Hall effect. We estimate the average Hall resistivity for multi-domain configurations and identify the limit where the DW scattering contribution becomes significant. We show that a continuum model obtained by linearizing the lattice dispersion around the Weyl points does not correctly capture this DW physics. Going beyond the linearized theory, and incorporating leading curvature terms, leads to a semi-quantitative agreement with our lattice model results. Recent advances in ultracold atoms in optical lattices and developments in surface science have allowed for the creation of artificial lattices as well as the control of many-body interactions. Such systems provide new settings to investigate interaction-driven instabilities and non-trivial topology. In this paper, we explore the interplay between molecular electric dipoles on a two-dimensional triangular lattice with fermions hopping on the dual decorated honeycomb lattice which hosts Dirac and flat band states. We show that short-range dipole-dipole interaction can lead to ordering into various stripe and vortex crystal ground states. We study these ordered states and their thermal transitions as a function of the interaction range using simulated annealing and Monte Carlo methods. For the special case of zero wave vector ferrodipolar order, incorporating dipole-electron interactions and integrating out the electrons leads to a six-state clock model for the dipole ordering. Finally, we discuss the impact of the various dipole orders on the electronic band structure and the local tunneling density of states. Our work may be relevant to studies of "molecular graphene" -- CO molecules arranged on the Cu(111) surface -- which have been explored using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, as well as ultracold molecule-fermion mixtures in optical lattices., Comment: 13 pages including appendices, 9 figures

The rise and fall of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ upon tuning carrier density or external parameters, such as pressure or magnetic field, is ubiquitously observed in a wide range of quantum materials. In order to investigate such domes of $T_c$, we go beyond the prototypical attractive Hubbard model, and consider a lattice model of electrons coupled via instantaneous, spatially extended, attractive interactions. By numerically solving the mean-field equations, as well as going beyond mean field theory using a functional renormalization group approach, we find that for a characteristic interaction range $\ell$, there exists a dome in $T_c$ around $k_F \ell \! \sim \! {\mathcal{O}}(1)$. For multiband systems, our mean field theory shows the presence of additional domes in the vicinity of Lifshitz transitions. Our results hold in both two and three dimensions and can be intuitively understood from the geometric relation between the Fermi surface and the interaction range. Recent experiments have examined the impact of a magnetic field on ferroquadrupolar orders in the intermetallic Kondo material PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. Motivated by this, we use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to study a diamond lattice XY model of non-Kramers pseudospin-$1/2$ Pr$^{3+}$ moments which crucially incorporates three-spin interactions. This model supports a thermal $Z_3$ Potts ordering transition upon cooling from the paramagnetic phase into the ferroquadrupolar phase. An applied magnetic field along the [110] direction leads to a thermal Ising transition out of the quadrupolar ordered phase. A magnetic field along the [001] direction leads to only thermal crossovers, but supports a spinodal transition out of metastable domains which could be strongly pinned by coupling to elastic lattice deformations. We propose noise measurements as a potential probe to "hear" the spinodal transition. Quantum magnets with spin $J=2$, which arise in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators, can potentially display multipolar orders. We carry out an exact diagonalization study of a simple octahedral crystal field Hamiltonian for two electrons, incorporating spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and interactions, finding that either explicitly including the $e_g$ orbitals, or going beyond the rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction within the $t_{2g}$ sector, causes a degeneracy breaking of the $J\!=\!2$ level degeneracy. This can lead to a low-lying non-Kramers doublet carrying quadrupolar and octupolar moments and an excited triplet which supports magnetic dipole moments, bolstering our previous phenomenological proposal for the stabilization of ferro-octupolar order in heavy transition metal oxides. We show that the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking due to ferro-octupolar ordering within the non-Kramers doublet leads to electronic orbital loop currents. The resulting internal magnetic fields can potentially explain the small fields inferred from muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiments on cubic $5d^2$ osmate double perovskites Ba$_2$ZnOsO$_6$, Ba$_2$CaOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$MgOsO$_6$, which were previously attributed to weak dipolar magnetism. We make further predictions for oxygen NMR experiments on these materials. We also study the reversed level scheme, where the $J\!=\!2$ multiplet splits into a low-lying magnetic triplet and excited non-Kramers doublet, presenting single-ion results for the magnetic susceptibility in this case, and pointing out its possible relevance for the rhenate Ba$_2$YReO$_6$. Motivated by experimental and theoretical interest in realizing multipolar orders in $d$-orbital materials, we discuss the quantum magnetism of $J\!=\!2$ ions which can be realized in spin-orbit coupled oxides with $5d^2$ transition metal ions. Based on the crystal field environment, we argue for a splitting of the $J\!=\!2$ multiplet, leading to a low lying non-Kramers doublet which hosts quadrupolar and octupolar moments. We discuss a microscopic mechanism whereby the combined perturbative effects of orbital repulsion and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin interactions leads to ferro-octupolar coupling between neighboring sites, and stabilizes ferro-octupolar order for a face-centered cubic lattice. This same mechanism is also shown to disfavor quadrupolar ordering. We show that studying crystal field levels via Raman scattering in a magnetic field provides a probe of octupolar order. We study spin dynamics in the ferro-octupolar state using a slave-boson approach, uncovering a gapped and dispersive magnetic exciton. For sufficiently strong magnetic exchange, the dispersive exciton can condense, leading to conventional type-I antiferromagnetic (AFM) order which can preempt octupolar order. Our proposal for ferrooctupolar order, with specific results in the context of a model Hamiltonian, provides a comprehensive understanding of thermodynamics, $\mu$SR, X-ray diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of cubic $5d^2$ double perovskite materials including Ba$_2$ZnOsO$_6$, Ba$_2$CaOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$MgOsO$_6$. We report time-of-flight neutron spectroscopic and diffraction studies of the 5$d^2$ cubic double pervoskite magnets, Ba$_2$MOsO$_6$ ($M$ = Zn, Mg, Ca). These cubic materials are all described by antiferromagnetically-coupled 5$d^2$ Os$^{6+}$ ions decorating a face-centred cubic (FCC) lattice. They all exhibit thermodynamic anomalies consistent with phase transitions at a temperature $T^*$, and exhibit a gapped magnetic excitation spectrum with spectral weight concentrated at wavevectors typical of type I antiferromagnetic orders. While muon spin resonance experiments show clear evidence for time reversal symmetry breaking, no corresponding magnetic Bragg scattering is observed at low temperatures. We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in SrRuO$_3$ thin films, uncovering wide regimes of wavelength, temperature, and magnetic field where the Kerr rotation is not simply proportional to the magnetization but instead displays two-component behavior. One component of the MOKE signal tracks the average magnetization, while the second "anomalous" component bears a resemblance to anomalies in the Hall resistivity which have been previously reported in skyrmion materials. We present a theory showing that the MOKE anomalies arise from the non-monotonic relation between the Kerr angle and the magnetization, when we average over magnetic domains which proliferate near the coercive field. Our results suggest that inhomogeneous domain formation, rather than skyrmions, may provide a common origin for the observed MOKE and Hall resistivity anomalies.

The discovery of massless Dirac electrons in graphene and topological Dirac-Weyl materials has prompted a broad search for bosonic analogues of such Dirac particles. Recent experiments have found evidence for Dirac magnons above an Ising-like ferromagnetic ground state in a two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice magnet and in the van der Waals layered honeycomb crystal CrI$_3$, and in a 3D Heisenberg magnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$. Here we report on our inelastic neutron scattering investigation on large single crystals of a stacked honeycomb lattice magnet CoTiO$_3$, which is part of a broad family of ilmenite materials. The magnetically ordered ground state of CoTiO$_3$ features ferromagnetic layers of Co$^{2+}$, stacked antiferromagnetically along the $c$-axis. We discover that the magnon dispersion relation exhibits strong easy-plane exchange anisotropy and hosts a clear gapless Dirac cone along the edge of the 3D Brillouin zone. Motivated by the interest in topological quantum paramagnets in candidate spin-$1$ magnets, we investigate the diamond lattice compound NiRh$_2$O$_4$ using {\it ab initio} theory and model Hamiltonian approaches. Our density functional study, taking into account the unquenched orbital degrees of freedom, shows stabilization of $S=1$ and $L=1$ state. We highlight the importance of spin-orbit coupling, in addition to Coulomb correlations, in driving the insulating gap, and uncover frustrating large second-neighbor exchange mediated by Ni-Rh covalency. A single-site model Hamiltonian incorporating the large tetragonal distortion is shown to give rise to a spin-orbit entangled non-magnetic ground state, largely accounting for the entropy, magnetic susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering results. Incorporating inter-site exchange within a slave-boson theory, we show that exchange frustration can suppress exciton condensation. We capture the dispersive gapped magnetic modes, uncover `dark states' invisible to neutrons, and make predictions for future experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Coupling between charge and spin, and magnetoelectric effects more generally, have been an area of great interest for several years, with the sought-after ability to control magnetic degrees of freedom via charge currents serving as an impetus. The orbital Edelstein effect (OEE) is a kinetic magnetoelectric effect consisting of a bulk orbital magnetization induced by a charge current. It is the orbital analogue of the spin Edelstein effect in spin-orbit coupled materials, in which a charge current drives nonzero electron spin magnetization. The OEE has recently been investigated in the context of Weyl semimetals and Weyl metals. Motivated by these developments, we study a model of electrons without spin-orbit coupling which exhibits line nodes that get gapped out by via symmetry breaking due to an interaction-induced charge density wave order. This model is shown to exhibit a temperature dependent OEE, which appears due to symmetry reduction into a gyrotropic crystal class., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Low density two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with spin-orbit coupling are highly sensitive to an in-plane magnetic field, which impacts their Fermi surfaces and transport properties. Such 2DEGs, formed at transition metal oxide surfaces or interfaces, can also undergo surface phase transitions leading to polar metals which exhibit electronic nematicity. Motivated by experiments on such systems, we theoretically study magnetotransport in $t_{2g}$ orbital systems, using Hamiltonians which include atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry, for both square symmetry (001) and hexagonal symmetry (111) 2DEGs. Using a numerical solution to the full multiband matrix-Boltzmann equation, together with insights gleaned from the impurity scattering overlap matrix, we explore the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in the presence of impurities which favor small momentum scattering. We find that transport in the (001) 2DEG is dominated by a single pair of bands, weakly coupled by impurity scattering, one of which has a larger Fermi velocity while the other provides an efficient current-relaxation mechanism. This leads to strong angle-dependent current damping and a large AMR with many angular harmonics. In contrast, AMR in the (111) 2DEG typically features a single $\cos(2\vartheta)$ harmonic, with the angle-averaged magnetoresistance being highly tunable by a symmetry-allowed trigonal distortion. We also explore how the (111) 2DEG Fermi sufaces are impacted by electronic nematicity via a surface phase transition into a 2D polar metal for which we discuss a Landau theory, and show that this leads to distinct symmetry components and higher angular harmonics in the AMR. Broken symmetries in solids involving higher order multipolar degrees of freedom are historically referred to as "hidden orders" due to the formidable task of detecting them with conventional probes. Examples of such hidden orders include spin-nematic order in quantum magnets, and quadrupolar or higher multipolar orders in various correlated quantum materials. In this work, we theoretically propose that the study of magnetostriction provides a powerful and novel tool to directly detect higher-order multipolar symmetry breaking $-$ such as the elusive octupolar order $-$ by examining its scaling behaviour with respect to an applied magnetic field $h$. As an illustrative example, we examine such key scaling signatures in the context of Pr-based cage compounds with strongly correlated $f$-electrons, Pr(Ti,V,Ir)$_2$(Al,Zn)$_{20}$, whose low energy degrees of freedom are composed of purely higher-order multipoles: quadrupoles $\mathcal{O}_{20,22}$ and octupole $\mathcal{T}_{xyz}$. Employing a symmetry-based Landau theory of multipolar moments coupled to lattice strain fields, we demonstrate that a magnetic field applied along the [111] direction results in a length change with a distinct linear-in-$h$ scaling behaviour, accompanied by hysteresis, below the octupolar ordering temperature. We show that the resulting "magnetostriction coefficient" is directly proportional to the octupolar order parameter, providing the first clear access to this subtle order parameter. Along other field directions, we show that the field dependence of the magnetostriction provides a window into quadrupolar orders. Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown to experience a Berry-flux density which varies with the Zeeman field. Such tunable skyrmion crystals provide a distinct realization of a Berry-Hofstadter butterfly, resulting in a phenomenon we term "topological quantum oscillations" in the electronic density of states and associated observables.

We have carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments to study magnetic excitations in ordered double perovskite Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$. We found a well-defined magnon mode with a bandwidth of $\sim$50meV below the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature ($T_c\sim$520K), similar to previously studied Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$. The spin excitation is gapless for most temperatures within the magnetically ordered phase. However, a spin gap of $\sim$10meV opens up below $\sim$150K, which is well below the magnetic ordering temperature but coincides with a previously reported metal-insulator transition and onset of structural distortion. The observed temperature dependence of spin gap provides strong evidence for ordering of Re orbitals at $\sim$150~K, in accordance with earlier proposal put forward by Oikawa $\it{et.\,al}$ based on neutron diffraction [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., $\bf{72}$, 1411 (2003)] as well as recent theoretical work by Lee and Marianetti [Phys. Rev. B, $\bf{97}$, 045102 (2018)]. The presence of separate orbital and magnetic ordering in Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ suggests weak coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom and hints towards a sub-dominant role played by spin orbit coupling in describing its magnetism. In addition, we observed only one well-defined magnon band near magnetic zone boundary, which is incompatible with simple ferrimagnetic spin waves arising from Fe and Re local moments, but suggests a strong damping of Re magnon mode., Comment: Supplemental Material available upon request; Accepted by PRB

A series of Pr(TM)$_2$X$_{20}$ (with TM=Ti,V,Rh,Ir and X=Al,Zn) Kondo materials, containing non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments on a diamond lattice, have been shown to exhibit intertwined orders such as quadrupolar order and superconductivity. Motivated by these experiments, we propose and study a Landau theory of multipolar order to capture the phase diagram and its field dependence. In zero magnetic field, we show that different quadrupolar states, or the coexistence of quadrupolar and octupolar orderings, may lead to ground states with multiple broken symmetries. Upon heating, such states may undergo two-step thermal transitions into the symmetric paramagnetic phase, with partial restoration of broken symmetries in the intervening phase. For nonzero magnetic field, we show the evolution of these thermal phase transitions strongly depends on the field direction, due to clock anisotropy terms in the free energy. Our findings shed substantial light on experimental results in the Pr(TM)$_2$Al$_{20}$ materials. Motivated by RIXS experiments on a wide range of complex heavy oxides, including rhenates, osmates, and iridates, we discuss the theory of RIXS for site-localized $t_{2g}$ orbital systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. For such systems, we present exact diagonalization results for the spectrum at different electron fillings, showing that it accesses "single-particle" and "multi-particle" excitations. This leads to a simple picture for the energies and intensities of the RIXS spectra in Mott insulators such as double perovskites which feature highly localized electrons, and yields estimates of the spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling in correlated $5d$ oxides. We present new higher resolution RIXS data at the Re-L$_3$ edge in Ba$_2$YReO$_6$ which finds a previously unresolved peak splitting, providing further confirmation of our theoretical predictions. Using ab initio electronic structure calculations on Ba$_2$${\cal M}$ReO$_6$ (with ${\cal M}$=Re, Os, Ir) we show that while the atomic limit yields a reasonable effective Hamiltonian description of the experimental observations, effects such as $t_{2g}$-$e_g$ interactions and hybridization with oxygen are important. Our ab initio estimate for the strength of the intersite exchange coupling shows that, compared to the osmates, the exchange is one or two orders of magnitude weaker in the rhenates and iridates, which may partly explain the suppression of long-range magnetic order in the latter compounds. As a way to interpolate between the site-localized picture and our electronic structure band calculations, we discuss the spin-orbital levels of the ${\cal M}$O$_6$ cluster. We propose the concept of "hybridization-switching induced Mott transition" which is relevant to a broad class of ABO$_3$ perovskite materials including BiNiO$_3$ and PbCrO$_3$ which feature extended $6s$ orbitals on the A-site cation (Bi or Pb), and A-O covalency induced ligand holes. Using {\it ab initio} electronic structure and slave rotor theory calculations, we show that such systems exhibit a breathing phonon driven A-site to oxygen hybridization-wave instability which conspires with strong correlations on the B-site transition metal ion (Ni or Cr) to induce a Mott insulator. Among heavy fermion materials, there is a set of rare-earth intermetallics with non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments which exhibit a rich phase diagram with intertwined quadrupolar orders, superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior. However, more subtle broken symmetries such as multipolar orders in these Kondo materials remain poorly studied. Here, we argue that multi-spin interactions between local moments beyond the conventional two-spin exchange must play an important role in Kondo materials near the ordered to heavy Fermi liquid transition. We show that this drives a plethora of phases with coexisting multipolar orders and multiple thermal phase transitions, providing a natural framework for interpreting experiments on the Pr(TM)$_2$Al$_{20}$ class of compounds., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Motivated by theory and experiments on strain induced pseudo-Landau levels (LLs) of Dirac fermions in graphene and topological materials, we consider its extension for Bogoliubov quasiparticles (QPs) in a nodal superconductor (SC). We show, using an effective low energy description and numerical lattice calculations for a d-wave SC, that a spatial variation of the electronic hopping amplitude or a spatially varying s-wave pairing component can act as a pseudo-magnetic field for the Bogoliubov QPs, leading to the formation of pseudo-LLs. We propose realizations of this phenomenon in the cuprate SCs, via strain engineering in films or nanowires, or s-wave proximity coupling in the vicinity of a nematic instability, and discuss its signatures in tunneling experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figs (added refs)

Recent experiments have explored two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at oxide (111) surfaces and interfaces, finding evidence for hexagonal symmetry breaking in SrTiO$_3$ at low temperature. We discuss many-body instabilities of such (111) 2DEGs, incorporating multiorbital interactions in the $t_{2g}$ manifold which can induce diverse magnetic and orbital orders. Such broken symmetries may partly account for the observed nematicity, cooperating or competing with phonon mechanisms. Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled states of quantum magnets which lie beyond the Landau paradigm of classifying phases of matter via broken symmetries. A physical route to arriving at QSLs is via frustration-induced quantum melting of ordered states such as valence bond crystals or magnetic orders. Here, we show, using extensive exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of concrete $SU(2)$ invariant spin models on honeycomb, triangular and square lattices, that chiral spin liquids (CSLs) emerge as descendants of triple-$Q$ spin crystals with tetrahedral magnetic order and a large scalar spin chirality. Such ordered-to-CSL melting transitions may yield lattice realizations of effective Chern-Simons-Higgs field theories. Our work provides a distinct unifying perspective on the emergence of CSLs, and suggests that materials with magnetic skyrmion crystal order might provide a good starting point to search for CSLs., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We report resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on ordered double perovskite samples containing Re$^{5+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ with $5d^2$ and $5d^4$ electronic configurations respectively. In particular, the observed RIXS spectra of Ba$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$MIrO$_6$ (M=Y, Gd) show sharp intra-t$_{2g}$ transitions, which can be quantitatively understood using a minimal `atomic' Hamiltonian incorporating spin-orbit coupling ($\lambda$) and Hund's coupling ($J_H$). Our analysis yields $\lambda=0.38(2)$eV with $J_H=0.26(2)$eV for Re$^{5+}$, and $\lambda=0.42(2)$eV with $J_H=0.25(4)$eV for Ir$^{5+}$. Our results provide the first sharp estimates for the Hund's coupling in $5d$ oxides, and suggest that it should be treated on equal footing with spin-orbit interaction in multi-orbital $5d$ transition metal compounds., Comment: Added theoretical RIXS spectrum + expanded. Motivated by the goal of realizing topological phases in thin films and heterostructures of correlated oxides, we propose here a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) in ultrathin films of double perovskites based on mixed 3d-5d or 3d-4d transition metal ions, grown along the [111] direction. Considering the specific case of ultrathin Ba2FeReO6, we present a theoretical analysis of an effective Hamiltonian derived from first-principles. We establish that a strong spin-orbit coupling at Re site, t2g symmetry of the low-energy d-bands, polarity of its [111] orientation of perovskite structure, and mixed 3d-5d chemistry results in room temperature magnetism with a robust QAHI state of Chern number C=1 and a large band-gap. We uncover and highlight a non-relativistic orbital-Rashba-type effect in addition to the spin-orbit coupling, that governs this QAHI state. Our prediction of a large topological band-gap of ~100 meV in electronic structure, and a magnetic transition temperature Tc~300K estimated by Monte Carlo simulations, is expected to stimulate experimental efforts at synthesis of such films and enable possible practical applications of its dissipationless edge currents., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figs, submitted to PRB

Motivated by the experiments on the rare-earth double perovskites, we propose a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model to describe the generic interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublets of the rare-earth moments. We carry out a systematic analysis of the mean-field phase diagram of this new model. In the phase diagram, there exist large regions with a continuous U(1) or O(3) degeneracy. Since no symmetry of the model protects such a continuous degeneracy, we predict that the quantum fluctuation lifts the continuous degeneracy and favors various magnetic orders in the phase diagram. From this order by quantum disorder mechanism, we further predict that the magnetic excitations of the resulting ordered phases are characterized by nearly gapless pseudo-Goldstone modes. We find that there exist Weyl magnon excitations for certain magnetic orders. Using density functional theory calculations, we establish that the half-metallicity of bulk Ba2FeReO6 survives down to 1 nm thickness in BaTiO3/Ba2FeReO6/BaTiO3 heterostructures grown along the (001) and (111) directions. The confinement of the two-dimensional (2D) electron gas in this quantum well structure arises from the suppressed hybridization between Re/Fe d states and unoccupied Ti d states, and it is further strengthened by polar fields for the (111) direction. This mechanism, distinct from the polar catastrophe, leads to an order of magnitude stronger confinement of the 2D electron gas than that at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We further show low-energy bands of (111) heterostructure display nontrivial topological character. Our work opens up the possibility of realizing ultrathin spintronic devices.

Motivated by cold atom experiments on Chern insulators, we study the honeycomb lattice Haldane-Hubbard Mott insulator of spin-$1/2$ fermions using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We show that this model exhibits various chiral magnetic orders including a wide regime of triple-Q tetrahedral order. Incorporating third-neighbor hopping frustrates and ultimately melts this tetrahedral spin crystal. From analyzing low energy spectra, many-body Chern numbers, entanglement spectra, and modular matrices, we identify the molten state as a chiral spin liquid (CSL) with gapped semion excitations. Motivated by experiments on ultracold atoms which have realized the Haldane model for a Chern insulator, we consider its strongly correlated Mott limit with spin-$1/2$ fermions. We find that slave rotor mean field theory yields gapped or gapless chiral spin liquid Mott insulators. To study competing magnetic orders, we consider the strong coupling effective spin Hamiltonian which includes chiral three-spin exchange. We obtain its classical phase diagram, uncovering various chiral magnetic orders including tetrahedral, cone, and noncoplanar spiral states which can compete with putative chiral quantum spin liquids. We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on these states, identifying crossovers in the spin chirality, and phase transitions associated with lattice symmetry breaking. In this review, we discuss the physics of spin-orbit coupled quantum gases in optical lattices. After reviewing some relevant experimental techniques, we introduce the basic theoretical model and discuss some of its generic features. In particular, we concentrate on the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and strong interactions and show how it leads to various exotic quantum phases in both the Mott insulating and superfluid regimes.
