Physical paper puppets are inanimate objects, but when we’re speaking in terms of the production of traditional paper cut out animation, they become the actors and the souls that drive the movie. When shooting and animating traditional paper cut out animation, the puppets are laid flat on a surface so they can only move in limited directions compared to conventional 2D or 3D animation. As we know, each character in animated movie has its own personality and unique to each other. The challenge lays in bringing out the characteristics and personality of the character through the limited medium of paper puppet. In this qualitative research, puppet movements will be applied to quadruped cat characters in a public service announcement titled “Spay & Neuter”. The puppet along with the visual design, segmentations, and joints were done in previous research. Qualitative observations and audio-visual materials are used to collect the data for references. Literature review will study the characteristics of cats, body language, behaviour, and principles of animation especially timing and exaggeration. Observation is conducted by studying the movements of real cats from online videos and direct observations and also studying how other animators animate cat characters in animated films. In the exploration stage, paper puppets will be animated according to the movement design while experimenting with the timing and frame rate of the stop motion to achieve the final results.

Stop motion, particularly paper cut out animation, is one of the oldest yet surviving animation techniques to date. Similar to other traditional animation techniques, it offers appealing looks unique to its nature. With the development of new technologies, stop motion continues to evolve. Paper puppet act as actor, therefore it’s the most essential element in production of paper cut out animation. Careful designs have to be made to ensure movements can be performed well by animators. The biggest question when designing puppets are how do we divide the parts (segmentation) and what kind of mechanism should we use to connect these parts (joint)? Several factors are to be considered when deciding the right approach for the answer. This qualitative research will use both observation and experiment method. Observation is conducted by studying existing paper puppets from other paper cut out animation shorts, tutorials, commercials, and behind the scenes videos from the filmmaker. Following the observation is an experiment where the author will use the data to explore paper puppets making, comparing benefits and weaknesses, and adjust the final method to comply the needs of the short animation project titled “Spay & Neuter” where the final design of the cat puppets will be applied.

Cutting out from sheets of paper, animal or fish skin, metals, birch bark, felt, textiles, parchment, synthetic films, etc. is an artistic technique that has been developed for millennia and helped to create a large number of art works such as Pazyryk felt hangings and leather ornaments; dome crosses, weathercocks, and plated chests; Nanai fish-skin wedding robes; Russian carved wooden house decorations, church crosses, paper silhouettes, etc. At present these art works are attributed to different branches of visual art regardless of the materials and employed techniques. This approach limits the ability to classify art objects of similar typological qualities correctly and it also hinders scientific research and systematization of art. Cutting out of various sheet materials involves the separation of the background and the image. The cut-out is a flat image that is visually three-dimensional and can be put on display as it is or against a background. The same set of tools and instruments used by all artists specializing in cutting designs is another defining characteristic of this form of art. This set usually comprises a variety of knives, scissors, cutters, chisels, saws, and fretsaws, punches, presses, etc. Over the course of centuries, the art of cutting designs has gathered a long and considerable artistic experience, introduced new methods and techniques, created its own visual language, mastered visual and non-visual art forms, produced monumental, easel, and miniature works in a broad variety of genres. The scientific approach makes it possible to systematize the up-to-now-disjointed art objects, organize them into a structured typological system and name this system the art of cutting. The research is based on the unique cut-outs collection of Domodedovo Art-Historical Museum.

Art and science represent human creativity and rational thinking, respectively. When the two seemingly opposite fields are intertwined, there is always a life-changing spark. In particular, the integration of ancient traditional Chinese art into the latest electronic devices is always been an unexcavated topic. Fabricating two-dimensional material with a tensile strain less than 3% with an ultimate global stretch has been an important problem that plagues the current flexible electronics field. The current research is limited to material in small scale, and it is always necessary to develop and extend large-sized flexible electronic systems. Here, inspired by the traditional Chinese paper-cut structure, we present a highly deformable multifunctional electronic system based on the MoS2 nanosheet. In this work, we first demonstrate how the traditional paper-cut structure can open the view of flexible electronics. In order to obtain a large area of MoS2 with excellent performance, we use a metal-assisted exfoliation method to transfer MoS2, followed by fabricating a field effect transistor to characterize its excellent electrical properties. Two photodetectors and a temperature sensor are produced with good performance. The mechanical simulation proves that the structure has more advantages in stretchability than other typical paper-cut structures. From the experimental and mechanical point of view, it is proved that the device can work stably under high deformation. We finally show that the device has broad application prospects in highly deformed organs, tissues, and joints. These findings set a good example of traditional Chinese culture to guide innovation in the field of electronic devices.

The authors venture to draw the attention of art historians to the art and craft of paper cutting. In this article they make it plausible that some miniature paper cut outs are made by a catholic man, Joannes van Achelom, from Amsterdam. The paper cuts are mounted as pendants, between glass and precios metal frames, and are dated around 1700; one points to grandduke Cosimo III. Indeed, at about 36 years of age, Joannes had been invited in 1668 to join prince Cosimo de'Medici, then visiting Amsterdam, and work at the Florentine court as an artist. He became a valet of the grandduke, and descriptions of ten of his paper cuts were identified in the art inventories of the court. Unfortunately, the real pieces of this scissor artist have not (yet) been traced. Van Achelom facilitated shelter and financial support in Florence for Dutch priests and students, on their way to or from Rome. One of them, his nephew Allardus Titsingh, priest in The Hague, inherited from his uncle Joannes a large collection of drawings from known Italian artists. This collection also contained eight paper cuts of exceptional quality, as witnessed by the German art connoisseur Zacharias von Uffenbach, who visited the priest in 1711. The whole collection was auctioned after the death of Allardus in 1713, without leaving a trace.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] EVELYNE LEBLANC-ROBERGE: In October 2014, I sent letters to men and women who are serving a life sentence or are on death row across the United States, asking if they would be interested in collaborating with me to produce a book and exhibition project about living spaces. I received several responses to my call for collaboration. Initially, receiving their responses was overwhelming. It was like receiving letters and drawings from another world--a parallel, institutionalized world. When I started the residency at the Visual Studies Workshop Project Space in November, I felt an urgency to do something with the letters I had received. As I was replying to my new collaborators, I photocopied the original letters, and selected and cut out parts that were inspiring or spoke to me in terms of visual imagery, and installed the fragments in the room. The walls of the Project Space became a mind map to help me process the next steps of the project. I photographed the small pieces of paper cut out from the copied letters along with the 4x6 images I sent back in response to the first series of letters, thus embedding the gray walls of the Project Space in the work. I then printed these photographs and installed them back in the room. I wanted to reference and integrate the space itself with the spaces described by my collaborators--these spaces that one cannot access, and these spaces that one cannot leave. I also wanted to play with the different possibilities of the (partial) equation "wall + paper" by installing a 1:1 scale photograph of a concrete wall on a wall of the Project Space. The main idea behind this specific installation was that the visitors could experience the exhibition/studio space with a new attention -the textures, colors, and marks of the walls themselves being an integral element in the work. I made booklets with fragments from the letters. This project will become an artist's book that will be a mobile exhibition, allowing my collaborators to have access to the outcomes of the project. The following are some excerpts (with my collaborators' permission) of letters, objects, and artworks I have received in response to my call, and some photographic images I sent in return. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] In reference to my image Office: I must say that the image from the flooded office seems to ask a question: What are the things that really matter? What do we appreciate, pursue and labor towards? What do we need? When the water starts rising those are the things to consider but why wait until the furniture Is washed out the window to ask those questions? (1) The cell Is all concrete covered, smooth and painted white, except the door which Is blue, kind of a dull blue, or a little grayish in color. Everything we are allowed is blue and/or white, some of us older cons that have been to other joints or have gotten packages way back might have different color sheets and towels. (2) A place longed for: There is a secluded spot, high up on the hill. On one side are houses, on the other, a long railing protecting a steep decline to an area below the freeway. The view is nothing spectacular--two highways headed In the opposite directions, twisting around and over each other; yellow streetlights on a large empty boulevard with dimly lit warehouses along its length; a black, starless sky dominating the scene--but it's peaceful, and the people in their homes don't mind me. I slept here, in my car, many nights, when I had nowhere to go and no one to keep me company except for a bottle of gin and the stars I couldn't see. (3) I have invited Peter Christensen and Joshua Dubler to have a conversation about the project and share their insights on the topic of prisons from their respective fields: architecture and religions. PETER CHRISTENSEN: As an architectural historian, it is my task to consider the specifically spatial aspects of Evelyne Leblanc-Roberge's compelling and ongoing project Wall+Paper to see what kind of insight I can offer on both the historical and theoretical levels. …

At present, the protection, inheritation, innovation and development of intangible cultural heritage in China are facing more severe opportunities and challenges. In order to overcome the shortcomings of too rigid and conservative expression, and poor interactive of traditional digital means, the virtual reality (VR) technology is applied to the protection and inheritance of the paper-cut art in this paper. Firstly, a variety of paper-cut basic symbols are put into a database, and then the paper-cut symbols are summarized. Now we put them into computer aided design software of CDDataBase, and we can use CorelDRAW for graphic expression and artistic design. Secondly, the virtual digital museum display system is constructed by using the 3D model database. At the same time we can create a digital platform for Mangshi Dai paper-cut art, in order to maximize the utilization of resources and sharing. Finally, using WeChat, weibo, community sites and other mediums of the Web platform to connect digital Dai paper-cut art with social docking platform can make public deeply understand Dai paper-cut arts. So the VR technology can achieve wide protection and inheritance of Dai paper-cut art.

In this article two major volumes with Chinese paper cut art by Fan Pu (Paula Fan) are reviewed. In her work it becomes clear how a traditional type of folk art can be transformed by using new techniques and material. By doing so, Fan Pu is able to make modern Christian art, which hopefully also appeals to present-day Chinese people. Herself being an evangelical Christian, she interestingly also uses sayings by pre-Christian Chinese sages like Confucius in her art; their wisdom can be seen as a kind of preparatio evangelica. The two works, analyzed here, together form a catalog of her work so far, from the nineteen seventies till now.

Modern art is getting more comprehensive and diversified rega rdless of genre in many forms due to the pluralism and anti-aesthetic trend of the time which is impacted by post modernism. This atmosphere is also applied to fashion illustration which creates synergy effect in cooperation with many different genres. This study selected Matisse' paper cut-out as the subject which would reflect the minimalism and abstractionism of modern plasticity. By taking this as the motive for fashion illustration, I made seven illustration works with the subject of minimalism of form and color. The conclusion of this study is as following. First, Matisse's paper cut out has controlled plasticity related to the modern abstractionism and it well fits the modern trend and sensibility which is appropriate for motive of fashion illustration. Second, by upgrading the technique of Matisse' paper cut-out in a modern way such as combination of hand drawing and computer graphic using Photosho p, I was able to make originative and creative illustration works with background and patterns that were closely connected with each other. Third, applying the fashion illustration to other various pro ducts is being well received now and I made my illustrations that could lead to follow up st udies to apply the fashion illustration to other different products. Matisse' paper cut-ou r has forms, colors and patterns that can contain both commercial and artistic value. T herefore it is quite feasible for follow up research to apply into many different areas. Background Because inguinal hernia repair is difficult for third-year students to comprehend, a 2-dimensional paper-cut was developed to teach the concepts of inguinal hernia in a time-effective manner before students' observation of herniorrhaphy in the operating room. Methods Using Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for MacIntosh, a 2-dimensional inexpensively printed paper-cut was created to allow students to perform their own simulated hernia repair before observing surgery. The exercise was performed using a no. 15 scalpel or an iris scissors and was evaluated by comparing 10-question pre-tests and post-tests. Results Seventy-five students performed the exercise, most completing it within 15 minutes. The mean pre-test score was 7.4/10 and the mean post-test score was 9.1/10. Students performing the paper-cut reported better understanding when observing actual herniorrhaphy. Conclusions A 2-dimensional paper-cut (“surgical origami”) may be a time-effective method to prepare students for the observation of hernia repair.
