We introduce Topological Offsets, a novel approach to generate manifold and self-intersection-free offset surfaces that are topologically equivalent to an offset infinitesimally close to the surface. Our approach, by construction, creates a manifold, watertight, and self-intersection-free offset surface strictly enclosing the input, while doing a best effort to move it to a prescribed distance from the input. Differently from existing approaches, we embed the input in a volumetric mesh, and insert a topological offset around the mesh with purely combinatorial operations. The topological offset is then inflated/deflated to match the user-prescribed distance, while enforcing that no intersections or non-manifold configurations are introduced. We evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of our approach on the non-intersecting subset of Thingi10k, and show that topological offsets are beneficial in multiple graphics applications, including (1) converting non-manifold surfaces to manifold ones, (2) creation of nested cages/layered offsets, and (3) reliably computing finite offsets., Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures

We propose a conservative algorithm to test the geometrical validity of simplicial (triangles, tetrahedra), tensor product (quadrilaterals, hexahedra), and mixed (prisms) elements of arbitrary polynomial order as they deform over a piecewise-linear trajectory. Our algorithm uses a combination of adaptive B\'ezier refinement and bisection search to determine if, when, and where the Jacobian determinant of an element's polynomial geometric map becomes negative in the transition from one configuration to another. Unlike previous approaches, our method preserves its properties also when implemented using floating point arithmetic: This feature comes at a small additional runtime cost compared to existing inexact methods, making it a drop-in replacement for current validity tests, while providing superior robustness and generality. To prove the practical effectiveness of our algorithm, we demonstrate its use in a high-order Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) elastodynamic simulator, and we experimentally show that it prevents invalid, simulation-breaking configurations that would otherwise occur using inexact methods, without the need for manual parameter tuning.

We introduce the first work on benchmarking and evaluating deep clustering algorithms on large-scale non-categorical 3D CAD models. We first propose a workflow to allow expert mechanical engineers to efficiently annotate 252,648 carefully sampled pairwise CAD model similarities, from a subset of the ABC dataset with 22,968 shapes. Using seven baseline deep clustering methods, we then investigate the fundamental challenges of evaluating clustering methods for non-categorical data. Based on these challenges, we propose a novel and viable ensemble-based clustering comparison approach. This work is the first to directly target the underexplored area of deep clustering algorithms for 3D shapes, and we believe it will be an important building block to analyze and utilize the massive 3D shape collections that are starting to appear in deep geometric computing.

We introduce a novel calibration and reconstruction procedure for structured light scanning that foregoes explicit point triangulation in favor of a data-driven lookup procedure. The key idea is to sweep a calibration checkerboard over the entire scanning volume with a linear stage and acquire a dense stack of images to build a per-pixel lookup table from colors to depths. Imperfections in the setup, lens distortion, and sensor defects are baked into the calibration data, leading to a more reliable and accurate reconstruction. Existing structured light scanners can be reused without modifications while enjoying the superior precision and resilience that our calibration and reconstruction algorithms offer. Our algorithm shines when paired with a custom-designed analog projector, which enables 1-megapixel high-speed 3D scanning at up to 500 fps. The Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) method enables robust complex simulations of deformable objects with contact and friction. The key to IPC's robustness is its strict adherence to geometric constraints, avoiding intersections, which are a common cause of robustness issues in contact mechanics. A key element of the IPC approach to contact is a geometric barrier function, which is defined directly in the discrete setting. While IPC achieves its main goal of providing guarantees for contact constraints, its parameters need to be chosen carefully to avoid significant simulation artifacts and inaccuracies. We present a systematic derivation of an IPC-like continuum potential defined for smooth and piecewise smooth surfaces, starting from identifying a set of natural requirements for contact potentials, including the barrier property, locality, differentiable dependence of shape, and absence of forces in rest configurations, based on the idea of candidate sets. Our potential is formulated in a way independent of surface discretization. This new potential is suitable for piecewise-linear surfaces and its efficiency is similar to standard IPC. We demonstrate its behavior and compare it to IPC on a range of challenging contact examples.

We present Image Sculpting, a new framework for editing 2D images by incorporating tools from 3D geometry and graphics. This approach differs markedly from existing methods, which are confined to 2D spaces and typically rely on textual instructions, leading to ambiguity and limited control. Image Sculpting converts 2D objects into 3D, enabling direct interaction with their 3D geometry. Post-editing, these objects are re-rendered into 2D, merging into the original image to produce high-fidelity results through a coarse-to-fine enhancement process. The framework supports precise, quantifiable, and physically-plausible editing options such as pose editing, rotation, translation, 3D composition, carving, and serial addition. Mechanical shock is a common occurrence in various settings, there are two different scenarios for shock protection: catastrophic protection (e.g. car collisions and falls) and routine protection (e.g. shoe soles and shock absorbers for car seats). The former protects against one-time events, the latter against periodic shocks and loads. Common shock absorbers based on plasticity and fracturing materials are suitable for the former, while our focus is on the latter, where elastic structures are useful. Improved elastic materials protecting against shock can be used in applications such as automotive suspension, furniture like sofas and mattresses, landing gear systems, etc. Materials offering optimal protection against shock have a highly non-linear elastic response: their reaction force needs to be as close as possible to constant with respect to deformation. In this paper, we use shape optimization and topology search to design 2D families of microstructures approximating the ideal behavior across a range of deformations, leading to superior shock protection. We present an algorithmic pipeline for the optimal design of such families combining differentiable nonlinear homogenization with self-contact and an optimization algorithm. These advanced 2D designs can be extruded and fabricated with existing 3D printing technologies. We validate their effectiveness through experimental testing.

Two-scale topology optimization, combined with the design of microstructure families with a broad range of effective material parameters, is increasingly widely used in many fabrication applications to achieve a target deformation behavior for a variety of objects. The main idea of this approach is to optimize the distribution of material properties in the object partitioned into relatively coarse cells, and then replace each cell with microstructure geometry that mimics these material properties. In this paper, we focus on adapting this approach to complex shapes in situations when preserving the shape's surface is important. Our approach extends any regular (i.e. defined on a regular lattice grid) microstructure family to complex shapes, by enriching it with individually optimized cut-cell tiles adapted to the geometry of the cut-cell. We propose an automated and robust pipeline based on this approach, and we show that the performance of the regular microstructure family is only minimally affected by our extension while allowing its use on 2D and 3D shapes of high complexity.

We present a numerically robust algorithm for computing the constrained Delaunay tetrahedrization (CDT) of a piecewise-linear complex, which has a 100% success rate on the 4408 valid models in the Thingi10k dataset. We build on the underlying theory of the well-known TetGen software, but use a floating-point implementation based on indirect geometric predicates to implicitly represent Steiner points: this new approach dramatically simplifies the implementation, removing the need for ad-hoc tolerances in geometric operations. Our approach leads to a robust and parameter-free implementation, with an empirically manageable number of added Steiner points. Furthermore, our algorithm addresses a major gap in TetGen's theory which may lead to algorithmic failure on valid models, even when assuming perfect precision in the calculations. Our output tetrahedrization conforms with the input geometry without approximations. We can further round our output to floating-point coordinates for downstream applications, which almost always results in valid floating-point meshes unless the input triangulation is very close to being degenerate.

Recent advances in the simulation of frictionally contacting elastodynamics with the Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) model have enabled inversion and intersection-free simulation via the application of mollified barriers, filtered line-search, and optimization-based solvers for time integration. In its current formulation the IPC model is constructed via a discrete constraint model, replacing non-interpenetration constraints with barrier potentials on an already spatially discretized domain. However, while effective, this purely discrete formulation prohibits convergence under refinement. To enable a convergent IPC model we reformulate IPC potentials in the continuous setting and provide a first, convergent discretization thereof. We demonstrate and analyze the convergence behavior of this new model and discretization on a range of elastostatic and dynamic contact problems, and evaluate its accuracy on both analytical benchmarks and application-driven examples., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

Developing computational models of the human jaw acquired from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Besides, a quantitative comparison is not attainable in the literature due to the involved manual tasks and the lack of surface/volumetric meshes. We share an open-access repository of 17 patient-specific finite-element (FE) models of human jaws acquired from CBCT scans and the utilized pipeline for generating them. The proposed pipeline minimizes model generation time and potential errors caused by human interventions. It gets dense surface meshes and provides reduced conformal surface/volumetric meshes suitable for FE analysis. We have quantified the geometrical variations of developed models and assessed models' accuracy from different aspects; (1) the maximum deviations from the input meshes, (2) the mesh quality, and (3) the simulation results. Our results indicate that the developed computational models are precise and have quality meshes suitable for various FE scenarios. Therefore, we believe this dataset will pave the way for future population studies.

High-order bases provide major advantages over linear ones in terms of efficiency, as they provide (for the same physical model) higher accuracy for the same running time, and reliability, as they are less affected by locking artifacts and mesh quality. Thus, we introduce a high-order finite element (FE) formulation (high-order bases) for elastodynamic simulation on high-order (curved) meshes with contact handling based on the recently proposed Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) model. Our approach is based on the observation that each IPC optimization step used to minimize the elasticity, contact, and friction potentials leads to linear trajectories even in the presence of nonlinear meshes or nonlinear FE bases. It is thus possible to retain the strong non-penetration guarantees and large time steps of the original formulation while benefiting from the high-order bases and high-order geometry. We accomplish this by mapping displacements and resulting contact forces between a linear collision proxy and the underlying high-order representation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in a selection of problems from graphics, computational fabrication, and scientific computing.

We introduce a general differentiable solver for time-dependent deformation problems with contact and friction. Our approach uses a finite element discretization with a high-order time integrator coupled with the recently proposed incremental potential contact method for handling contact and friction forces to solve ODE- and PDE-constrained optimization problems on scenes with complex geometry. It supports static and dynamic problems and differentiation with respect to all physical parameters involved in the physical problem description, which include shape, material parameters, friction parameters, and initial conditions. Our analytically derived adjoint formulation is efficient, with a small overhead (typically less than 10% for nonlinear problems) over the forward simulation, and shares many similarities with the forward problem, allowing the reuse of large parts of existing forward simulator code. We implement our approach on top of the open-source PolyFEM library and demonstrate the applicability of our solver to shape design, initial condition optimization, and material estimation on both simulated results and physical validations.

We introduce a large-scale benchmark for broad- and narrow-phase continuous collision detection (CCD) over linearized trajectories with exact time of impacts and use it to evaluate the accuracy, correctness, and efficiency of 13 state-of-the-art CCD algorithms. Our analysis shows that several methods exhibit problems either in efficiency or accuracy. To overcome these limitations, we introduce an algorithm for CCD designed to be scalable on modern parallel architectures and provably correct when implemented using floating point arithmetic. We integrate our algorithm within the Incremental Potential Contact solver [Li et al . 2021] and evaluate its impact on various simulation scenarios. Our approach includes a broad-phase CCD to quickly filter out primitives having disjoint bounding boxes and a narrow-phase CCD that establishes whether the remaining primitive pairs indeed collide. Our broad-phase algorithm is efficient and scalable thanks to the experimental observation that sweeping along a coordinate axis performs surprisingly well on modern parallel architectures. For narrow-phase CCD, we re-design the recently proposed interval-based algorithm of Wang et al. [2021] to work on massively parallel hardware. To foster the adoption and development of future linear CCD algorithms, and to evaluate their correctness, scalability, and overall performance, we release the dataset with analytic ground truth, the implementation of all the algorithms tested, and our testing framework.

We introduce a collection of benchmark problems in 2D and 3D (geometry description and boundary conditions), including simple cases with known analytic solution, classical experimental setups, and complex geometries with fabricated solutions for evaluation of numerical schemes for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in laminar flow regime. We compare the performance of a representative selection of most broadly used algorithms for Navier-Stokes equations on this set of problems. Where applicable, we compare the most common spatial discretization choices (unstructured triangle/tetrahedral meshes and structured or semi-structured quadrilateral/hexahedral meshes). The study shows that while the type of spatial discretization used has a minor impact on the accuracy of the solutions, the choice of time integration method, spatial discretization order, and the choice of solving the coupled equations or reducing them to simpler subproblems have very different properties. Methods that are directly solving the original equations tend to be more accurate than splitting approaches for the same number of degrees of freedom, but numerical or computational difficulty arise when they are scaled to larger problem sizes. Low-order splitting methods are less accurate, but scale more easily to large problems, while higher-order splitting methods are accurate but require dense time discretizations to be stable. We release the description of the experiments and an implementation of our benchmark, which we believe will enable statistically significant comparisons with the state of the art as new approaches for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are introduced.

We introduce a code generator that converts unoptimized C++ code operating on sparse data into vectorized and parallel CPU or GPU kernels. Our approach unrolls the computation into a massive expression graph, performs redundant expression elimination, grouping, and then generates an architecture-specific kernel to solve the same problem, assuming that the sparsity pattern is fixed, which is a common scenario in many applications in computer graphics and scientific computing. We show that our approach scales to large problems and can achieve speedups of two orders of magnitude on CPUs and three orders of magnitude on GPUs, compared to a set of manually optimized CPU baselines. To demonstrate the practical applicability of our approach, we employ it to optimize popular algorithms with applications to physical simulation and interactive mesh deformation.

Interval computation is widely used to certify computations that use floating point operations to avoid pitfalls related to rounding error introduced by inaccurate operations. Despite its popularity and practical benefits, support for interval arithmetic is not standardized nor available in mainstream programming languages. We propose the first benchmark for interval computations, coupled with reference solutions computed with exact arithmetic, and compare popular C and C++ libraries over different architectures, operating systems, and compilers. The benchmark allows identifying limitations in existing implementations, and provides a reliable guide on which library to use on each system. Simulating physical systems is a core component of scientific computing, encompassing a wide range of physical domains and applications. Recently, there has been a surge in data-driven methods to complement traditional numerical simulations methods, motivated by the opportunity to reduce computational costs and/or learn new physical models leveraging access to large collections of data. However, the diversity of problem settings and applications has led to a plethora of approaches, each one evaluated on a different setup and with different evaluation metrics. We introduce a set of benchmark problems to take a step towards unified benchmarks and evaluation protocols. We propose four representative physical systems, as well as a collection of both widely used classical time integrators and representative data-driven methods (kernel-based, MLP, CNN, nearest neighbors). Our framework allows evaluating objectively and systematically the stability, accuracy, and computational efficiency of data-driven methods. Establishing a consistent normal orientation for point clouds is a notoriously difficult problem in geometry processing, requiring attention to both local and global shape characteristics. The normal direction of a point is a function of the local surface neighborhood; yet, point clouds do not disclose the full underlying surface structure. Even assuming known geodesic proximity, calculating a consistent normal orientation requires the global context. In this work, we introduce a novel approach for establishing a globally consistent normal orientation for point clouds. Our solution separates the local and global components into two different sub-problems. In the local phase, we train a neural network to learn a coherent normal direction per patch (i.e., consistently oriented normals within a single patch). In the global phase, we propagate the orientation across all coherent patches using a dipole propagation. Our dipole propagation decides to orient each patch using the electric field defined by all previously orientated patches. This gives rise to a global propagation that is stable, as well as being robust to nearby surfaces, holes, sharp features and noise., Comment: SIGGRAPH 2021

We describe an efficient algorithm to compute a conformally equivalent metric for a discrete surface, possibly with boundary, exhibiting prescribed Gaussian curvature at all interior vertices and prescribed geodesic curvature along the boundary. Our construction is based on the theory developed in [Gu et al. 2018; Springborn 2020], and in particular relies on results on hyperbolic Delaunay triangulations. Generality is achieved by considering the surface's intrinsic triangulation as a degree of freedom, and particular attention is paid to the proper treatment of surface boundaries. While via a double cover approach the boundary case can be reduced to the closed case quite naturally, the implied symmetry of the setting causes additional challenges related to stable Delaunay-critical configurations that we address explicitly in this work.

We propose Deep Estimators of Features (DEFs), a learning-based framework for predicting sharp geometric features in sampled 3D shapes. Differently from existing data-driven methods, which reduce this problem to feature classification, we propose to regress a scalar field representing the distance from point samples to the closest feature line on local patches. Our approach is the first that scales to massive point clouds by fusing distance-to-feature estimates obtained on individual patches. We extensively evaluate our approach against related state-of-the-art methods on newly proposed synthetic and real-world 3D CAD model benchmarks. Our approach not only outperforms these (with improvements in Recall and False Positives Rates), but generalizes to real-world scans after training our model on synthetic data and fine-tuning it on a small dataset of scanned data. We demonstrate a downstream application, where we reconstruct an explicit representation of straight and curved sharp feature lines from range scan data.

Generating locally optimal UAV-trajectories is challenging due to the non-convex constraints of collision avoidance and actuation limits. We present the first local, optimization-based UAV-trajectory generator that simultaneously guarantees the validity and asymptotic optimality for known environments. \textit{Validity:} Given a feasible initial guess, our algorithm guarantees the satisfaction of all constraints throughout the process of optimization. \textit{Asymptotic Optimality:} We use an asymptotic exact piecewise approximation of the trajectory with an automatically adjustable resolution of its discretization. The trajectory converges under refinement to the first-order stationary point of the exact non-convex programming problem. Our method has additional practical advantages including joint optimality in terms of trajectory and time-allocation, and robustness to challenging environments as demonstrated in our experiments.

We introduce a large scale benchmark for continuous collision detection (CCD) algorithms, composed of queries manually constructed to highlight challenging degenerate cases and automatically generated using existing simulators to cover common cases. We use the benchmark to evaluate the accuracy, correctness, and efficiency of state-of-the-art continuous collision detection algorithms, both with and without minimal separation. We discover that, despite the widespread use of CCD algorithms, existing algorithms are either: (1) correct but impractically slow, (2) efficient but incorrect, introducing false negatives which will lead to interpenetration, or (3) correct but over conservative, reporting a large number of false positives which might lead to inaccuracies when integrated in a simulator. By combining the seminal interval root finding algorithm introduced by Snyder in 1992 with modern predicate design techniques, we propose a simple and efficient CCD algorithm. This algorithm is competitive with state of the art methods in terms of runtime while conservatively reporting the time of impact and allowing explicit trade off between runtime efficiency and number of false positives reported.

The computation of first and second-order derivatives is a staple in many computing applications, ranging from machine learning to scientific computing. We propose an algorithm to automatically differentiate algorithms written in a subset of C99 code and its efficient implementation as a Python script. We demonstrate that our algorithm enables automatic, reliable, and efficient differentiation of common algorithms used in physical simulation and geometry processing.

Voronoi diagrams are highly compact representations that are used in various Graphics applications. In this work, we show how to embed a differentiable version of it -- via a novel deep architecture -- into a generative deep network. By doing so, we achieve a highly compact latent embedding that is able to provide much more detailed reconstructions, both in 2D and 3D, for various shapes. In this tech report, we introduce our representation and present a set of preliminary results comparing it with recently proposed implicit occupancy networks.

We propose a new tetrahedral meshing method, fTetWild, to convert triangle soups into high-quality tetrahedral meshes. Our method builds on the TetWild algorithm, replacing the rational triangle insertion with a new incremental approach to construct and optimize the output mesh, interleaving triangle insertion and mesh optimization. Our approach makes it possible to maintain a valid floating-point tetrahedral mesh at all algorithmic stages, eliminating the need for costly constructions with rational numbers used by TetWild, while maintaining full robustness and similar output quality. This allows us to improve on TetWild in two ways. First, our algorithm is significantly faster, with running time comparable to less robust Delaunay-based tetrahedralization algorithms. Second, our algorithm is guaranteed to produce a valid tetrahedral mesh with floating-point vertex coordinates, while TetWild produces a valid mesh with rational coordinates which is not guaranteed to be valid after floating-point conversion. As a trade-off, our algorithm no longer guarantees that all input triangles are present in the output mesh, but in practice, as confirmed by our tests on the Thingi10k dataset, the algorithm always succeeds in inserting all input triangles.

We propose a system to deliver dynamic guidance in drawing, sketching and handwriting tasks via an electromagnet moving underneath a high refresh rate pressure sensitive tablet. The system allows the user to move the pen at their own pace and style and does not take away control. The system continously and iteratively measures the pen motion and adjusts magnet position and power according to the user input in real-time via a receding horizon optimal control formulation. The optimization is based on a novel approximate electromagnet model that is fast enough for use in real-time methods, yet provides very good fit to experimental data. Using a closed-loop time-free approach allows for error-correcting behavior, gently pulling the user back to the desired trajectory rather than pushing or pulling the pen to a continuously advancing setpoint. Our experimental results show that the system can control the pen position with a very low dispersion of 2.8mm (+/-0.8mm). An initial user study indicates that it significantly increases accuracy of users drawing a variety of shapes and that this improvement increases with complexity of the shape.

We present a theoretical and empirical study of the gradient dynamics of overparameterized shallow ReLU networks with one-dimensional input, solving least-squares interpolation. We show that the gradient dynamics of such networks are determined by the gradient flow in a non-redundant parameterization of the network function. We examine the principal qualitative features of this gradient flow. In particular, we determine conditions for two learning regimes:kernel and adaptive, which depend both on the relative magnitude of initialization of weights in different layers and the asymptotic behavior of initialization coefficients in the limit of large network widths. We show that learning in the kernel regime yields smooth interpolants, minimizing curvature, and reduces to cubic splines for uniform initializations. Learning in the adaptive regime favors instead linear splines, where knots cluster adaptively at the sample points.

The ScanAllFish project is a large-scale effort to scan all the world's 33,100 known species of fishes. It has already generated thousands of volumetric CT scans of fish species which are available on open access platforms such as the Open Science Framework. To achieve a scanning rate required for a project of this magnitude, many specimens are grouped together into a single tube and scanned all at once. The resulting data contain many fish which are often bent and twisted to fit into the scanner. Our system, Unwind, is a novel interactive visualization and processing tool which extracts, unbends, and untwists volumetric images of fish with minimal user interaction. Our approach enables scientists to interactively unwarp these volumes to remove the undesired torque and bending using a piecewise-linear skeleton extracted by averaging isosurfaces of a harmonic function connecting the head and tail of each fish. The result is a volumetric dataset of a individual, straight fish in a canonical pose defined by the marine biologist expert user. We have developed Unwind in collaboration with a team of marine biologists: Our system has been deployed in their labs, and is presently being used for dataset construction, biomechanical analysis, and the generation of figures for scientific publication.

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is widely used to solve discrete Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in engineering and graphics applications. The popularity of FEM led to the development of a large family of variants, most of which require a tetrahedral or hexahedral mesh to construct the basis. While the theoretical properties of FEM basis (such as convergence rate, stability, etc.) are well understood under specific assumptions on the mesh quality, their practical performance, influenced both by the choice of the basis construction and quality of mesh generation, have not been systematically documented for large collections of automatically meshed 3D geometries. We introduce a set of benchmark problems involving most commonly solved elliptic PDEs, starting from simple cases with an analytical solution, moving to commonly used test problem setups, and using manufactured solutions for thousands of real-world, automatically meshed geometries. For all these cases, we use state-of-the-art meshing tools to create both tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes, and compare the performance of different element types for common elliptic PDEs. The goal of his benchmark is to enable comparison of complete FEM pipelines, from mesh generation to algebraic solver, and exploration of relative impact of different factors on the overall system performance.

We introduce ABC-Dataset, a collection of one million Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models for research of geometric deep learning methods and applications. Each model is a collection of explicitly parametrized curves and surfaces, providing ground truth for differential quantities, patch segmentation, geometric feature detection, and shape reconstruction. Sampling the parametric descriptions of surfaces and curves allows generating data in different formats and resolutions, enabling fair comparisons for a wide range of geometric learning algorithms. The reconstruction of a discrete surface from a point cloud is a fundamental geometry processing problem that has been studied for decades, with many methods developed. We propose the use of a deep neural network as a geometric prior for surface reconstruction. Specifically, we overfit a neural network representing a local chart parameterization to part of an input point cloud using the Wasserstein distance as a measure of approximation. By jointly fitting many such networks to overlapping parts of the point cloud, while enforcing a consistency condition, we compute a manifold atlas. By sampling this atlas, we can produce a dense reconstruction of the surface approximating the input cloud. The entire procedure does not require any training data or explicit regularization, yet, we show that it is able to perform remarkably well: not introducing typical overfitting artifacts, and approximating sharp features closely at the same time. We experimentally show that this geometric prior produces good results for both man-made objects containing sharp features and smoother organic objects, as well as noisy inputs. We compare our method with a number of well-known reconstruction methods on a standard surface reconstruction benchmark.

We present an efficient, trivially parallelizable algorithm to compute offset surfaces of shapes discretized using a dexel data structure. Our algorithm is based on a two-stage sweeping procedure that is simple to implement and efficient, entirely avoiding volumetric distance field computations typical of existing methods. Our construction is based on properties of half-space power diagrams, where each seed is only visible by a half-space, which were never used before for the computation of surface offsets. The primary application of our method is interactive modeling for digital fabrication. Our technique enables a user to interactively process high-resolution models. It is also useful in a plethora of other geometry processing tasks requiring fast, approximate offsets, such as topology optimization, collision detection, and skeleton extraction. We propose a hardware and software pipeline to fabricate flexible wearable sensors and use them to capture deformations without line of sight. Our first contribution is a low-cost fabrication pipeline to embed multiple aligned conductive layers with complex geometries into silicone compounds. Overlapping conductive areas from separate layers form local capacitors that measure dense area changes. Contrary to existing fabrication methods, the proposed technique only requires hardware that is readily available in modern fablabs. While area measurements alone are not enough to reconstruct the full 3D deformation of a surface, they become sufficient when paired with a data-driven prior. A novel semi-automatic tracking algorithm, based on an elastic surface geometry deformation, allows to capture ground-truth data with an optical mocap system, even under heavy occlusions or partially unobservable markers. The resulting dataset is used to train a regressor based on deep neural networks, directly mapping the area readings to global positions of surface vertices. We demonstrate the flexibility and accuracy of the proposed hardware and software in a series of controlled experiments, and design a prototype of wearable wrist, elbow and biceps sensors, which do not require line-of-sight and can be worn below regular clothing.

We introduce an integrated meshing and finite element method pipeline enabling black-box solution of partial differential equations in the volume enclosed by a boundary representation. We construct a hybrid hexahedral-dominant mesh, which contains a small number of star-shaped polyhedra, and build a set of high-order basis on its elements, combining triquadratic B-splines, triquadratic hexahedra (27 degrees of freedom), and harmonic elements. We demonstrate that our approach converges cubically under refinement, while requiring around 50% of the degrees of freedom than a similarly dense hexahedral mesh composed of triquadratic hexahedra. We validate our approach solving Poisson's equation on a large collection of models, which are automatically processed by our algorithm, only requiring the user to provide boundary conditions on their surface., Comment: FORTHCOMING in TOG

We study data-driven representations for three-dimensional triangle meshes, which are one of the prevalent objects used to represent 3D geometry. Recent works have developed models that exploit the intrinsic geometry of manifolds and graphs, namely the Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and its spectral variants, which learn from the local metric tensor via the Laplacian operator. Despite offering excellent sample complexity and built-in invariances, intrinsic geometry alone is invariant to isometric deformations, making it unsuitable for many applications. To overcome this limitation, we propose several upgrades to GNNs to leverage extrinsic differential geometry properties of three-dimensional surfaces, increasing its modeling power. In particular, we propose to exploit the Dirac operator, whose spectrum detects principal curvature directions --- this is in stark contrast with the classical Laplace operator, which directly measures mean curvature. We coin the resulting models \emph{Surface Networks (SN)}. We prove that these models define shape representations that are stable to deformation and to discretization, and we demonstrate the efficiency and versatility of SNs on two challenging tasks: temporal prediction of mesh deformations under non-linear dynamics and generative models using a variational autoencoder framework with encoders/decoders given by SNs.

This paper develops a new way to create smooth piecewise polynomial free-form spline surfaces from quad- meshes that include T-junctions, where surface strips start or terminate. All mesh nodes can be interpreted as control points of geometrically-smooth, piecewise polynomials that we call GT-splines. GT-splines are B-spline-like and cover T-junctions by two or four patches of degree bi-4. They complement multi-sided surface constructions in generating free-form surfaces with adaptive layout. Since GT-splines do not require a global coordination of knot intervals, GT-constructions are easy to deploy and can provide smooth surfaces with T-junctions where T-splines can not have a smooth parameterization.
