Abstract

People today refer to the Midwestern and prairie states as flyover country. During the Civil War, crossing those areas was the biggest obstacle in uniting the East and West Coasts of our divided nation. An act of Congress in 1862 authorized the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroad companies to build a railroad that would link the coasts. Seven years later, on May 10, 1869, an overwhelmingly immigrant labor force completed the task when a rail line was join in Promontory, Utah. The states had become united at last.

Abstract

This article focuses on several developments in the U.S. and around the world, as of September 28, 1865. Saint Louis is very naturally exulting in the completion of the Missouri link of the Pacific Railroad, by which the city hopes to recover the distance gained over it by Chicago during the war. This portion of the grand line, which connects Saint Louis and Kansas City, has been fifteen years building, latterly, of courses under the most adverse circumstances. Another development focuses on the statement by the Commissioner of Agriculture, in which he stated that while the wheat crop has received no further detriment, its quality is still inferior, especially in the West, where it was affected by blight and rust.

Francaviglia looks anew at the geographical-historical context of the driving of the golden spike in May 1869. He gazes outward from the site of the transcontinental railroad's completion—the summit of a remote mountain range that extends south into the Great Salt Lake. The transportation corridor that for the first time linked America's coasts gave this distinctive region significance, but it anchored two centuries of human activity linked to the area's landscape. Francaviglia brings to that larger story a geographer's perspective on place and society, a railroad enthusiast's knowledge of trains, a cartographic historian's understanding of the knowledge and experience embedded in maps, and a desert lover's appreciation of the striking basin-and-range landscape that borders the Great Salt Lake.

Abstract

The article discusses some of the political updates related to the U.S. The Pacific Railroads funding bill, defeated in the U.S. House, was a complicated financial measure. The motives, which were apparently strongest in bringing about the rejection of this bill, had little to do with the merits of the question. The debt of the road to the Government is $112,000,000 and is secured only by a second mortgage on the main line. Ahead of this comes a first mortgage on the main line and branches. The U.S. Congress can seriously contemplate neither bond issues on account of the road nor its operation by the Government. The only inference is that it has shirked and means to go on shirking, its duty to settle the question one way or another.

Abstract

This article presents information on socio-political conditions in the U.S. during 1895. When the U.S. House of Representatives fixed a time for taking a vote on the Pacific Railroad bill against the pretests of the opponents of the measure, it was generally supposed that the same vote would be cast for the bill itself. It has turned out differently, the bill having been defeated by a large majority. The leading architects of the land, who have been working with patriotic zeal to get a law passed by the U.S. Congress which should put the office of supervising architect upon a basis that would enable it to command the best architectural talent of the country in the construction of public buildings, have discovered that their plans have been thwarted.

The article reports on the construction projects of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) and the Union Pacific Railroad in response to the demands of the U.S. government's defense mobilization program. CB&Q is improving its line to accommodate faster trains, including a plan to bypass the bottleneck between Kansas City and Brooklyn, Missouri with a new line between Missouri City and Tina. The incentive of the Union Pacific's construction program, on the other hand, is the McNary Dam which is expected to back up waters of the Columbia River.

Abstract

The article presents information on various socio-political developments around the world. The January Treasury statement of the national debt, which had not yet appeared when we wrote last week, confirms everything said concerning the cash balance in the Treasury. It has risen from 125 millions, on December 1, to 133 millions in January, although over nine millions of the increase is due to a corresponding increase in the private coin deposits a circumstance which we are, however, totally unable to account for by any known operations of the Treasury. The contract just concluded between the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and the Central Pacific Railroad by which the former agree to abandon their line of steamers between San Francisco and Panama will have a wide reaching consequence.

Abstract

This article presents information related to social, economic and political issues. The news of the passage of the Woman's Suffrage Bill to a second reading in Great Britain House of Commons excited a good deal of rejoicing amongst the friends of the movement both in the U.S. and in England. In spite of the excitement produced in England by the Greek massacres, none of the wild schemes of revenge proposed at the outset by a portion of the press seems to have met with popular favor. While the freight business of the Pacific Railroad has not immediately answered expectations in regard to it, the road's importance as a national highway is daily increasing.

The recent elections, and particularly those in Kentucky and Iowa, show that the Bryan element has secured a hold upon the Democratic organization so firm that it need no longer fear the opposition of the Gold Democrats.

Abstract

U.S. Secretary of State, John Sherman's examination by the U.S. House Committee on Banking and Currency was resumed, but nothing very new was elicited. He explained that he thought he could procure $50,000,000 more gold, if needed, by the sale of bonds, though he declined at first to say where he would sell them, but afterwards admitted that it would be "at home." The U.S. Senate has been almost exclusively occupied with discussing the Pacific Railroads Sinking Fund Bill from the Judiciary Committee. The Railroad Committee's Bill was unexpectedly withdrawn and railroad interest then devoted itself to the amendment of the measure not inspired by itself. The Virginia repudiators have received a severe blow in the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court of Appeals of that State reaffirming the constitutionality of the Funding Act.

Abstract

The article discusses some of the political updates related to the U.S. The U.S. Senate had already passed a joint resolution providing for an International Commission to fix the relations between silver and gold, and also to consider the question of the double standard. The resolution was defeated in the House by the votes of the silver men. The House Committee on Pacific railroads has agreed to report a Texas and Pacific bill with all the branches, but there will be a good deal of opposition to the measure in the House. The Government is to guarantee the interest on the companies' bonds, at a rate not exceeding thirty-five thousand dollars a mile, though railroad experts maintain that it can be built for about fifteen thousand.

Asian coins carried and lost by Chinese workers as they lived and worked in camps along the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad can illuminate daily activities, beliefs, and the movement of people and supplies along the rail lines during their construction. A review of what is known about recovered Asian coins in Chinese work camps is compared with recently recovered examples. Abstract

As noted often by the former California Coastal Commission Executive Director Peter Douglas, the history of how the California coast was saved is a great repository of untold stories. Although the Commission has had a dramatic and tangible impact on California's coastal geography, the public is largely unaware of many of its early accomplishments. This article begins to chronicle the rich stories of California's coastal legacy by telling the story of how the Commission utilized the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) to prevent Southern Pacific Railroad from developing a seven-mile stretch of the Monterey Bay shoreline. In so doing, the Commission helped make possible the creation of the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail, a public bicycle and pedestrian path that has grown to sixteen miles in length and runs through the heart of John Steinbeck's world-famous Cannery Row. The controversy also was the subject of the first judicial challenge of a state's federal authority under the CZMA and precluded private commercial and residential development that would have dramatically altered the urban form of the Monterey Peninsula. It is important to tell the story as the Coastal Commission's role in this remarkable accomplishment has been almost completely overlooked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Take an inside look of how the musical "Spike 150: As One" was made. Meet the creators of SPIKE 150: AS ONE -- a stirring new musical inspired by the Golden Spike era with five original compositions and performances. "As One" was written and directed by the all-star team of award-winning composer, producer and songwriter Stephen Nelson; lyricist and vocalist Anjanette Mickelsen; and direction and choreography by Jennifer Parker Hohl. Distinguished musician and conductor Craig Jessop was the show’s executive producer. "As One" featured a chorus and band of more than 250 elementary school students selected from Utah’s 29 counties. SPIKE 150: AS ONE was recorded live at the Golden Spike National Historic Site on May 10th, 2019 at 12:30pm.
